I’m happy to report an early 3-1 New York lead after the first inning. Tyler Kepner doing some fine work on the mound, with Bryan Hoch (LF) and Pete Caldera (2B) making plays in the field.

In only In less than half their games, the opposing starter has managed to pitch 6+ complete innings against the yankees. 13 performances out of 27 games played. And the average IP against in those games is only 6.25 IP.

  36. m May 7th, 2010 at 10:48 am

I’ll just post it, so they won’t get hits for it. :)

BOSTON — The Red Sox lost two of three to the Yankees in the season’s opening series, and enter this weekend’s three-game set 6½ games behind first-place Tampa Bay, five games behind second-place New York and 1½ games behind third-place Toronto in the AL East.

“Those are going to be some good games,” Pedroia said of playing the Yankees. “We just have to keep doing what we’re doing.

“We know we haven’t played well early. We don’t want the three teams in front of us to get too far away. We’ve just got to play better.”

Five things to watch in this weekend’s Red Sox-Yankees series at Fenway Park:

    1. Get to the Yankees’ bullpen
The three Yankee starters this weekend — Phil Hughes, CC Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett — are a combined 11-1 with a 2.16 ERA so far this season. The Red Sox need to run up those pitch counts as quickly as possible, especially with Yankees closer Mariano Rivera sidelined for five games with stiffness in his left side. The 40-year-old Rivera is expected to be available this weekend, but may be more vulnerable than usual.

    2. Battle of the slugging second sackers
Sounds like a headline straight out of the ’50s, doesn’t it? Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano comes into the weekend second in the league in home runs (9) and slugging (.695), while third in the league in hitting (.362). Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia leads the Sox in homers (7) and RBIs (21) and has played exceptional defense of late.

“He’s on another level, man,” Pedroia said of Cano. “Fun to watch. I’d definitely pay to watch him hit, the way he plays.

“I think everyone has seen it. That first week at our place, the way he swung the bat. He hits every pitch. There really isn’t a flaw in his swing. It’s pretty fun to watch.”

    3. Keep the late-night thrills coming
The Red Sox come into the weekend tied with the Cardinals for most runs scored from the seventh inning on, 52, and the winning run has scored from the seventh on in six of their last 10 wins.

    4. Start strong, stay long
Since April 27, Red Sox starters have a 5-1 record and 1.99 ERA in the six games not started by Daisuke Matsuzaka. In all six games, they’ve gone at least 7 innings. Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester have both gone 8. This is how this club was built to win.

    5. Keeping it in the yard
Red Sox relievers have to keep the ball on the premises. The Red Sox pen has allowed 17 home runs, most in the league.

  37. MTU (aka GBURL) May 7th, 2010 at 10:53 am

    m-

    1. I am sure that will be a strategy the Sox will try to employ with Phil. That’s why Hughes needs to be agressive and pound the Zone.
The Sox love to foul of pitches to try to elevate pitch counts. If Phil has his usual command of the FB and velocity he should be fine.
Nibble and their will be trouble ahead.

Beckett is frequently vulnerable early in a game.

The Yanks should try to take advantage of any early weakness or control problems Beckett may have and get out to the lead.

If Beckett cannot establish his FB he is dead meat.

Joba, Aceves, and Mo are all available for tonite’s game so the BP is far from weak.

Take the lead, hold the lead, and slam the door shut. :)

  49. Irreverent Discourse May 7th, 2010 at 11:08 am

    breakdown…

    1. Get to the Yankees bullpen.
If the best thing they have to look forward to is a ‘rusty’ Mariano Rivera, they should just stay home for the weekend.

    2. Battle of the Slugging Second Sackers
Apparently even Pedroia knows he’s not in the same league as Cano. Also, chalk Pedroia up for one more positive comment about the Yankees than the Red Sox this season.

    3. Keep the Late-Night Thrills Coming.
This seems to be directly tied to #1, and the last hope of a losing team. “Please, oh, please keep getting wins off bad bullpens” is not a victorious battle cry.

    4. Stay Strong, Stay Long.
Since April 27th Boston has played Toronto, Baltimore, and a floundering Angels team. Your starters pitched well against bad teams, be proud?

    5. Keeping it in the Yard.
This weekend the series is in Boston, so this is not even an option.

Recap of Francona’s interview with Dan Patrick. He’s right about the unbalanced schedule. They have to play the Yankees/Rays at least 36 times. :) :

Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona joined the show to talk about his season and more.

Francona said that he doesn’t like having to play division rivals so often. “I’d rather see a little bit more balance in the schedule,” Francona said. “Playing a team 18 or 19 times is too much, and they’re good. If you can win 90, 95 in our division, that’s a pretty good accomplishment.”

Francona believes the Rays’ hot start is no fluke. “Tampa’s good, and if people don’t think they are, they’re kidding themselves,” Francona said.

Francona explained why the Red Sox-Yankees games take so long. “Every pitch is so meaningul,” Francona said. “I don’t think people mind. Seems like a lot of people are watching.”

Dan asked Francona about David Ortiz’ swing. “Hopefully getting there. … It’s no secret, we kind of need him to hit,” Francona said.

Francona also weighed in on the tasering in Philly, where he used to be the manager. “In this day and age, I know fans should stay off the field,” Francona said.

Because of Carl Crawford, the Rays have a slogan this year wearing tee-shirts under uniform tops that read, G.T.M.I. which means “Get The Man In”.
It’s meant for players to do what it takes to get baserunners crossing the plate and into the dugout.
In sharp contrast to Boston’s “run prevention” theme.
The nearest team to the Rays 12-1 road record in both leagues is Toronto with a 10-3 record.

  56. Chip May 7th, 2010 at 11:11 am

    A few things:

    1. Dallas Braden should shut up. If he’s still in the majors when the Yankees next play the A’s and if he’s pitching in the series and if he’s man enough to follow through on his threats and hit Alex; what does he think will happen? I’ll tell you what. Alex will take his base and whichever Yankee is pitching against them will hit one of Oakland’s players at which point that player will turn to Braden and say “thanks (rear)hole”

A month and change in and here are some trade thoughts:

    1. Kevin Millwood to the Phillies. The Phillies need another arm and Millwood had some success there. He’s at the end of his contract and shouldn’t cost the team much in way of prospects.

    2. Aramis Ramirez to the Angels. Brandon Wood has been awful, the Cubbies have also been awful. It may be time in Chicago to start tearing it down and trying again. I believe Ramirez can opt out of his contract at the end of this season. While Ramirez is off to a horrible start this season he’s likely to improve and would give the Angels some much needed RH power.

    3. Octavio Dotel to the Rays. Pittsburgh is obviously not going anywhere; Tampa’s only major need is some help in the back end of their pen in front of Soriano. Dotel would fit that role well and Tampa certainly has the young players to offer the Pirates in return.

    4. Chris Ianetta to Boston. The Red Sox desperately need to improve the defensive ability of their catchers. Ianetta has been sent to AAA by the Rockies in favor of Miguel Olivo. Boston could play Ianetta behind the dish and DH Victor Martinez thus putting Ortiz on the bench and improve their defense dramatically.

  60. Chip May 7th, 2010 at 11:14 am

The Astros won’t trade Berkman (or Oswalt). Their owner believes that those two guys are fixtures and has vetoed trades in the past for Oswalt.

Also, Lance has not nearly been as productive recently as in past years, given the money involved I can’t see another team making that move.

If Theo wants a DH his best move is to pick up another catcher and move Victor to DH where his glove won’t hurt the team.

  61. m May 7th, 2010 at 11:15 am

    Irreverent,

Hopefully the Sox won’t figure out it’s fool’s gold until we leave a big dust trail in our wake.

  62. Irreverent Discourse May 7th, 2010 at 11:15 am

Chip – I wouldn’t expect new ownership to start tearing the Cubbies apart in the first year. I don’t think Iannetta to the Sox is very realistic, the Rockies know that Olivo is not a permanent solution and are really trying to get Ianetta settled in for the future.

Randy, the Yanks will just have to cure the Sox of any delusions they have of beating them (or the Rays) out for the division or wild card, lol.

I knew all along the Sox would be fine – their pitching is simply too good and their offense has been surprisingly strong – so this is no surprise to me. I would love to take 2 out of 3…….but none of these games are going to be easy.

  73. CB May 7th, 2010 at 11:35 am

The dynamics of baseball this year may be different than what they’ve been in the recent past.

There has been significant accumulation and consolidation of talent amongst a very small handful of teams – and two in particular – the Yankees and Rays.

In a sense competition may be bifurcating some.

Pick an “all star” team made up of players from the AL West and from the AL Central. Would that all star team have more talent than the Yankees or the Rays?

LGY did that for the AL West yesterday and it looked like the Yankees were better than that AL West all start team by a considerable standpoint.

If this is the case, the team records, especially over small samples of games, may not be very indicative when teams don’t have to fact the Yankees and Rays.

Still too early I think to make this case, but it’s something that has struck me after watching teams play this year.

The Yankees and Rays are playing a different game so far.

  78. CR9 May 7th, 2010 at 11:39 am

Why did the Yankees media pound the Red Sox media?

It seems like the Boston media was more concerned about other things. Does the Boston media have other stuff on their mind, like how best to help out the Red Sox, and what new prospect they can prop up to get Adrian Gonzalez!!

The Yankees media has no overarching goal to help the Yankees, they went out there to have fun today.

  79. champ809 May 7th, 2010 at 11:39 am

    How are the RedSox fine?

They are in 4th place in a 5 team division and can’t beat any of the teams ahead of them.

They also just got swept at home by the worst team in the division who also happens to be the worst team in the sport.

    That’s in good shape?

where is the story about dallas breden calling out Arod Again ?

  83. Joe from Long Island May 7th, 2010 at 11:42 am

The old saying in was to play the top teams even, and murder the second division suckers. That is sort of the situation that the Yankees face now – playing Tampa even, and beating up on everyone else. If they do that, they’re in the playoffs, the only question being whether or not they’re the no. 1 seed. It then comes down to short series’ October.

So, they need a long rotation and roster built to withstand the grind of a long regular season, with the ability to “shorten the bench” to win a short series with everything on the line. I think Cash has done that – 4 starters who can start a playoff game, multiple BP options, and a regular linep and bench that Joe can use to win one game at a time.

“”I told Robby, ‘I’ve played with a lot of great players. I’ve played with A-Rod and Chipper Jones and Vlad Guerrero, and you have a chance to be the best. Keep working hard and getting better, and in 15 years we’re going to be talking about you like they talk about those guys,”’ Teixeira says.

Listen to those sentiments, and they help substantiate the notion that Cano is about to graduate from very good player to another realm. If his fellow Yankees gawk when he takes an impossibly difficult pitch and shoots it to the gap or beyond, what on earth must opposing pitchers be thinking?”

    GREAT Article on Robbie Cano

I think that it was a really dirty trick by the NYY writers to show a box of glazed Krispy Kremes to PA when he was trying to hit. It’s one of those “unwritten rules”.

Joe, the Yankees have a very deep roster that is built to withstand the rigors of a long season (though no team can overcome a series of serious injuries). The Rays are an excellent team and maybe this is a magic year for them where everything goes right, but if not, then they will also have their rough spots – their little nagging injuries. We’ll know more about them then. Of course, if their pitching keeps this up……..

From Frankie Piliere at Fanhouse. Seems to have alot of good things to say about Yankee prospects.

    • It’s been an outstanding start to the season for Yankees’ Triple-A right-hander Ivan Nova. In 37 innings of work for Scranton, Nova has a 2.43 ERA and is holding hitters to a .254 batting average. So far he’s been working with his good sinking fastball around 91-94 mph and has attacked hitters aggressively down in the zone. This is a guy that absolutely has big-league stuff, but where he fits with the Yankees is a big question.

I can’t believe that Teixeira dissed Jeter in that article. He named Rodriguez, Guerrero and Larry Jones as great players that he’s played with but no mention of jeter in that group. I think that it’s quite telling about how he feels towards Jeter.

Evan on WFAN is predicting the Sox to take 2/3 because they are playing better and because the games have more urgency for them. I don’t care that he predicts that, but that reasoning doesn’t make any sense unless he thinks that the Yankees aren’t going to play hard…

  106. SJ44 May 7th, 2010 at 12:12 pm

Yes, the Red Sox are playing better. They got swept by a last place team last weekend the Yankees just swept.

Of course, Even probably didn’t know that because the Sox just pounded a slumping Angels team.

Radio talk show hosts are like many fans. They have a 24 hour attention span. The Red Sox won yesterday and the Yankees didn’t play. That means the Red Sox are playing “better”.

Here is the reality of this series. Its meaningless.

    Its May. It means nothing.

The Yankees lost their first 8 games to Boston last year and went on to win the WS.

The good thing about this series is, the Yankees only have one more trip to Fenway and that’s in the last weekend of the season.

They have already won 2 of 3 in Boston. Meaning, if they just win ONE game in this series, the Red Sox have no net gain for 6 games against them in Fenway. A far cry from last year.

Do you really mean that GB or was this is a joke?

As great as the Captain is you can’t put him in that same class of player simply from a power number perspective. I think that’s what Tex was talking about. Jeter doesn’t have the bat to drive in runs like those other guys do, he’s more of 1 or 2, at least with the NYY. I don’t see that as a dis at all! Robby has triple crown potential, as did those other guys he mentioned, Jeter does not, that’s how I read it.

  108. Chip May 7th, 2010 at 12:13 pm

    Betsy -

I for one don’t think Boston is playing better than the Yankees right now. I think both teams are playing well.

Just looking at the pitching matchups – I’m not entirely sure how Hughes will respond to Boston so I can see the Sox getting that one. I’ll take CC over Bucholtz any day of the week and Lester has been up and down this season but AJ is capable of blowing up at any given time…so who knows.

Frankly, I don’t see this series determining anything for either team.

No, it’s not the fact that they are playing better than they were that bothers me; it’s the fact that he thinks the Sox will win 2/3 because they need the games more that’s annoying. They may very well take 2/3 or sweep or whatever, but this isn’t football where games are played on emotion. The Yankees want to win just as much as the Sox do…..

  113. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 7th, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Chip, I didn’t mean that the Sox were playing better than the Yankees. Evan said the Sox were playing better than they had been playing – which is true. I’m not going to say that their wins were due to the Angels being bad because if the Yankees were in the same position, we would take any win we could get.

Both squads are dealing with injuries so that’s about even.

  120. CB May 7th, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Winning is what matters. But winning and playing good baseball are not always synonymous.

And this year the gap between those two may be larger than it has in the past because of the distribution of talent.

And if you are going to beat the yankees you are going to have to play at a very high, sustained level of effort.

The Sox could very well rise to that challenge and beat the yankees this weekend. But there was little in their play against the Angels that indicated that they were playing at that kind of high level of quality.

The angels series was ugly baseball. It worked against the angels.

But the Sox will need to play much better to make a mark against the yanks in this series.

“The Sox could very well rise to that challenge and beat the yankees this weekend. But there was little in their play against the Angels that indicated that they were playing at that kind of high level of quality.”

The Red Sox will look a lot better when Cameron and Ellsbury get back in the lineup. That will be fairly soon as both are starting their rehab assignments this weekend or next week.

Their pitching is already starting to look better which is not surprising or unexpected as their pitching was expected to be good pre-season. Their bullpen has been spotty due to Okajima and Ramirez but Papelbon, Bard and Delcarmen have pitched well and you have to think Okajima will come around.

Their defense has been a little shaky which is surprising. Adding Cameron and Ellsbury has to help though.

That said, it is great to have an early season series with them with some space between the teams and not having to think you have to win every game.

  129. MTU (aka GBURL) May 7th, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Actually it all comes down to the law of averages.

The Sox and Yankees are rarely more than one game apart for each season.

Tonite’s game has no effect on the long term outcome of the season
but I just would love to see Hughes dominate again and take it to the next level.

When Joba outdueled Beckett at Fenway that time it was awesome.

I would love to see Phil do just the same.

It’s sweet to watch Boston lose a close game at home.

And even sweeter if the loser is Beckett.

It just doesn’t get any better than that.

I hope that Phil brings his A game tonite. :)

  130. SJ44 May 7th, 2010 at 12:37 pm

    CB,

That’s the way I read the Angels series.

I don’t care what the Red Sox do this weekend, they aren’t as good as the Rays or Yankees. They aren’t going to hold up over the long haul unless they either make changes to their roster or injuries hit the Yankees and Rays in a very significant way.

The talent and performance gap between the Red Sox, Rays and Yankees are wider than the so called experts realize.

The Sox still don’t play well, or hit well, on the road. This is the softest part of their schedule in these first two months and they are only 1 game over .500.

This is usually the time they pile up wins. That’s not happening.

Regardless of this weekend’s outcome, I’m just not feelin’ this Sox team as a big threat.

At least in their current construction.

Starting pitching never decides this series. Its always the offenses and the bullpens because the starters are usually out of games earlier than usual.

Either way, it knocks three more games off the schedule for the Yankees to play in Fenway this season. That’s the only significance this series has to me.

  131. GreenBeret7 May 7th, 2010 at 12:39 pm

One of the major differences between Boston and NYYs is the what the Red Sox spent so much time and money to improve this past winter… defense. NYY has turned more DP, made half of the errors, allowed half as many stolen bases while playing in 30 fewer innings than Boston. NYY has played fewer innings than any other team in baseball. NYY has allowed 6 unearned runs and Boston 12. Not sure how many came in their 6 extra inning games, but, that’s a lot. Even if it only cost the 2-3 winns, that’s a huge problem in this division.

I’m not sure what to expect from Phil in Phenway tonight. He’s a totally different pitcher than he was in 2008 when last he started; in fact, he pitched well out of the pen here last year. He might want to throw a lot of cutters/2 seamers to get ground balls…

  140. tk May 7th, 2010 at 12:53 pm

    Just saw this on RAB:

“Here?s a hint of what we might see this afternoon. Josh Norris of the Trentionian tweets that the the SWB Yankees have activated catcher PJ. Pilittere from the disabled list. With Jesus Montero and Chad Moeller already on the roster, that gives SWB three catchers. That could signal a major league roster move, which would be Moeller heading to Boston to back up Francisco Cervelli. The Yanks would have to find a free 25-man roster spot, and would also have to first call up Chris Garcia and place him on the 60-day DL. We?ll keep an eye out this afternoon to see if anything comes of this.”

I really hope that isn’t going to be the case, it would seem to be a pretty strong indication that Posada is going to be out at least a few more days.

This past week the yankees continued to excel despite having what was effectively a 23 man roster due to Mo and Posada’s lack of availability.

For half a game, it was down to a 22 man roster.

It is not an ideal situation to go into Boston with a roster that is functionally less than 25 men.

If Posada’s calf is bothering him, having only one functioning catcher isn’t a great idea.

Jeter moves into 2nd place of all time games played as a Yankee tonight. Only Mickey Mantle has played in more, 2401-2165 (which probably surprises most fans, given his injury history).

Hughes has done something that hasn’t been done in 19 years (David Cone) by allowing only 10 hits in at least 25 innings.

“Hughes has also allowed just 10 hits in his first four starts, and according to the Elias Sports Bureau, only one other starter in the past 19 years — David Cone in 1999 — has given up 10 hits or fewer while working at least 25 innings across his first four outings.”

some fun notes about the Yankees/BoSox Series.

“This past week the yankees continued to excel despite having what was effectively a 23 man roster due to Mo and Posada?s lack of availability.”

I think this really speaks to that massive talent disparity you were pointing out earlier. As you put it, the Yankees have excelled, and have done so without their all-star CF & C, the greatest closer of all-time, and a functioning Vazquez (not to mention normal production from the #2-4 hitters). A month or so from now the Yankees should be firing on all cylinders and have the toughest two months of their season behind them. Any team behind them in the standings at that point should probably brace themselves to stay in that position for the last 4 months of the season.

The RSox Yankee series this weekend is really a important series for the RSox. The pressure is on them to try and sweep. There is little pressure on the Yankees because even if they lose 3 to RSox, they have the majority of their games against the RSox to be played in Yankee Stadium still and likewise many games left against the Rays. If RSox are somehow swept that would be mass hysteria in beantown.

Jeter single, Johnson single, HR by Tex or Alex in the first.
    Watch Master deal.

    Uncle E
I like the way you think. It would be great if Phil could have a lead before he even goes out on the filed.

Maybe for a day. They are so rah-rah in beantown, college town and all, they would be down til the next RS comeback down 3-0 to whomever in the 5th.

  167. Fran (the original) May 7th, 2010 at 1:23 pm

    Ray,

Agree with you. The Pressure is on the Red Sox. They are already behind and if they get swept they would really be in a hole.

NYYs need to score 15 runs in the first inning and slowly pull away.

  169. mick May 7th, 2010 at 1:23 pm

Look for Beckett to be at 100 pitches in the 5th. It’s a war of attrition between us and them.
Phil could easily outpitch Beckett, who isn’t what he used to be, lucky to get that contract, as our lineup is vastly superior.

  170. Uncle Ellsworth May 7th, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Position Player Hero of the day???
    Anyone want to guess.
hoping it is Tex but I’m also getting a Swisher vibe.

  171. GreenBeret7 May 7th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

The schedule for the rest of May is going to be about as tough as it has been since opening day. After that and through the All-star break it should get considerably easier with teams like Seattle, KC, Houston, Mets, Cleveland, Oakland and San Diego on the schedule.

  172. mick May 7th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

    When will Arod breakout?

    Thinking it’s tonight.

  173. Pat M. May 7th, 2010 at 1:28 pm

Beckett will be more than formidable tonight…..This is going to be a tough series, for both clubs……BoSox are in a corner though….However a good showing this weekend could be the cure to what ails them……Do not take this weekend lightly

    We don’t play SD.

  176. Uncle Ellsworth May 7th, 2010 at 1:29 pm

GB 15 runs in the first – That’ll work too.

These series are a lot of fun – especially when the pressure is on the Sox.

    Doreen,

    Thanks for setting this up.

The yankee line-up has the potential to be vastly superior to Boston’s if they were hitting, but, right now, the line-ups are pretty even.

  179. mick May 7th, 2010 at 1:33 pm

Lineups not even close without Ellsbury and Cameron,no great shakes, and Ortiz sucking and VMart not hitting.

Even w/o Posada our lineup is much tougher and he will most likely play a game or two.

Pat, not sure why, but, I expect to see two blowouts, one from each team and one pitcher’s duel. Season records and individual player numbers don’t ever seem to matter when these two teams play.

  181. GreenBeret7 May 7th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

Teixeira, Johnson, Rodriguez aren’t hitting and Jeter and Cano have been slumping. Offense is a lot closer than you think.

No New Lineups in This Thread. Thanks.

  183. mick May 7th, 2010 at 1:41 pm

Hopefully Tex and NJ keep up what they started in NY.
Artod is in a prolonged slump, wondering about him.

Cano is eyeing the long ball since Balt and BP in NY when he hit it over the Mohegan Sun and gloated.

  184. mick May 7th, 2010 at 1:42 pm

Pedroia Youk are key to that team these days…others are non-factors
