Romulo Sanchez in the clubhouse

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on May 07, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Hard-throwing right-hander Romulo Sanchez is here, but he said he has no idea what his role might be. Sanchez said he might be pitching out of the bullpen.

What this means for Andy Pettitte is uncertain, but it doesn’t seem to be good news for him.

UPDATE, 4:10 p.m.: Or maybe it’s not bad news for Pettitte after all. Greg Golson is nowhere to be found. Looks like that was the move.

Pat posted a Heyman link indicating that Andy was going to be skipped; it’s absolutely the right move. These players need to be protected from their own competitive instincts, lol

SI_JonHeyman hear pettitte is lobbying not to miss a turn. but his #yankees bosses arent listening. they will skip him 1 turn.

No reason to DL Jorgie…he was taking BP today, he’s fine! Like people already said they weren’t going to play him tonight and tomorrow afternoon, might as well PH hit him tonight if they need his stick and get him going for good tomorrow. If they were worried than a 3rd catcher would have been the move today, not Sanchez

With that lineup the yankees are going to need a shut out to win tonight, luckily they have Hughes going

    /reversal

  9. LGY May 7th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

I hope the Yankees run more this series and really put the pressure on the Sox pitchers.

Gardner, Jetes, Winn, Alex get your track shoes on. Time to pad those SB stats.

  10. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 7th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Fran (the original) is the new GTLU win leader, by herself, with 10! Congratulations. For more details, click on my name. Use the navigation bar to get to GTLU for standings, and BLOG for today’s winning lineup, the winners and a list of those who participated.

I thought I recalled Girardi saying on Wednesday that should the need arise, Jorge could have caught. He says he likes to give an extra day after a player says he’s good to go.

  11. Giuseppe Franco May 7th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

I’m not sure this move really means anything much in regards to Pettitte.

We already know that he’s almost guaranteed to miss one start. Mitre is starting in his place and was burned for this weekend anyways because he pitched a few innings on Wednesday.

Having an extra pitcher for a series at Fenway is never a bad idea.

I don’t see this as anything more than what we already know – Mitre is going to start for Pettitte against the Tigers.

  12. Wave Your Hat May 7th, 2010 at 4:13 pm

I’m not one of those who criticize people for criticizing the lineup, but given that Jorge can’t play tonight and tomorrow both this lineup is as strong as the Yanks can field against a righty.

  13. Uncle Ellsworth May 7th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

    much ado about nothing

  14. Mark in Tampa May 7th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

“I’m not sure this move really means anything much in regards to Pettitte.”

The biggest impact of the Pettitte health issue is that is buys Vazquez more time to get straightened out. Probably at least 3-5 more starts.

  15. Erin May 7th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Ledger_Yankees Posada thinks he’s in tomorrow. Says his calf is fine after warming up. Can catch and swing. Running could be an issue.

BryanHoch Jorge Posada says he hopes to play Saturday vs. Red Sox.

  16. mick May 7th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

    # SJ44 May 7th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Girardi’s philosophy with an injured player (non-DL variety) has always been giving him an extra day when the player says he’s ready.

If Jorge needed to be DL’ed, they would have called up Moeller.

If Jorge played tonight, he wouldn’t have played tomorrow. Day game after night game.

Seems to me, they feel he is good to go tomorrow and will play tomorrow and Sunday night.

If needed, he can catch tonight or he wouldn’t be available.

Not every injury requires a DL stay.

In Sanchez’s case, it means Mitre starts in Detroit on Tuesday, and they skip Pettitte a turn, and Sanchez is the long man until the middle of next week when they see how Pettitte is feeling.

Once you step away from the ledge, relax and think, these moves are pretty easy to figure out.

As far as the lineup whiners, you have made fools out of yourselves for the last two years with the constant complaining about the lineup. Why should today be any different?

CR9 – did i really read a comment of yours that called Chad “HOT…..like Wayne Rooney”??

I’m surprised Chad has let you stay on here!!!

Now, I’ve already concluded your eyesight isn’t 20-20, judging by the one-eyed way you view balls/strikes during Yankee games, but, Rooney? Really?

He couldn’t look more English council-house, fish+chip fed, pasty, ginger and facially-challenged if he was trying to… Brilliant footballer, undeniable, but hot? sheesh…

  22. Jeremy May 7th, 2010 at 4:19 pm

Why is Joe West one of the umps for this series ? I don’t understand why West, CB Bucknor, and Marty Foster aren’t fired by now.

  23. Dano May 7th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

PS – apologies to any ginger-haired people on here, that was uncalled for

  24. SJ44 May 7th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

The last time we had the SAME people declare a Yankee pitcher had to pitch a shutout to overcome Girardi’s “awful” lineup, they scored 12 runs.

I’m not saying they are going to score 12 runs tonight.

However, when the manager of the team now has a record of 122-67 since last season, you gotta think he knows what he is doing with the lineups.

  28. CB May 7th, 2010 at 4:23 pm

This isn’t a critical series. The Yankees are playing .700 baseball. There is no reason to push Jorge Posada in any way.

It was very unlikely he would play all three games of the series. As Wave is stating it makes sense to hold him out of this game.

The Sanchez move is interesting. Clearly it’s in preparation for Mitre starting Tuesday. Melancon can’t be recalled. Nova last pitched on May 3. Not sure if they would want to test him out of the pen given his usual work schedule in the triple A rotation.

Would rather see Sanchez up here than Albaladejo again.

Whats the thinking behind Brett not batting ninth?

Maximizes chances for Brett to get RBI opportunities with his high BA / likelihood of reaching base vs maximizing the chances he will be on base for Jeter (essentially, most of the times the 9th hitter would reach for the leadoff batter will be in 1 or 2 out situations).

Some Sox fans are such blind homers. If they really think they are going to swep this series then they have been drinking too much of the Theo Epstein cool-aid and they are reading too much into beating a pathetic Mickey Mouse Angels team. If they think they can run through Hughes, Sabathia, and Burnett like a knife through butter than they will be surprised.

Disappointing that A-Rod is being so passive about the Braden thing.

He needs to go after Braden the way Braden went after him. Braden showered him with insults about how he is an individualistic player and is selfish, and how he has no respect for the game and is nothing like his captain, and how he is a fool, and he implied he wants to fight him, etc.

Time for A-Rod to throw insults back. I want A-Rod to make some joke about Braden’s teeth. He also needs to reference how he is a under .500 career pitcher who is not a a speck on A-Rod’s radar and it would mean more from someone who was actually good at baseball. He also needs to mock Braden for wanting to fight him. Also needs to mention that Braden is the one who is the individual because he is threatening to fight and get a suspension and hurt his team’s chances as a result over something this dumb.

Come on A-Rod… break the silence, let’s put Braden in his place.

The Joe West is umpiring this series thing is just an urban legend.

That said, I’m certain MLB has a schedule set for the umpiring crews for the entire season. They will not alter it. If Joe West is scheduled to umpire a series against the Yankees and/or Red Sox this season, he will. That is a virtual certainty.

A question for those roster rule experts out there – Moeller is not on the 40 man, so if they bring him up someone has to go off the 40 man. I know Christian Garcia is hurt (again) – can he be put on the 60 day DL even though he was in the minor leagues? There is something in the back of my mind that says they can’t do that, but I’m not sure.

Assuming that is the case – who goes off the 40 man if they need to bring up a catcher? Could they DFA Garcia even if he is hurt? If not, who would go?

‘Second leadoff batter’ only works when you field an A+ lineup. If Granderson and Posada replace Winn/Cervelli then it makes sense to bat Brett 9th because the lineup would be so potent anyways.

I think Thames should be starting over Winn.

Winn looks silly at the plate and Thames hits the fastball pretty hard. A righty with that wall in left field just seems like a better move to me. Not to mention that Winn can’t seem to hit and Thames is mashing the ball.

I guess we’ll see how the move pans out. Other than that, great lineup. You guys who are complaining need to take a step back and look at the lineup.

Prediction 1: Hughes will pitch a good game tonight, Beckett not as good, but decent. Game will be decided in the 7th or 8th inning (which is likely to be around 10:45).

Prediction 2: Beginning around 7:15pm, the LoHud blog will be overun by a series of posters complaining about the umpires. A large majority of these posters will be fact be one person posting under multiple screennames, agreeing with himself.

    An offering…

    Greg (Chicago)

Hughes going tonight. He has been phenomenal all year but mostly against some less than potent offenses (O’s, A’s Chi-Sox). Has he finally turned the corner and become the prospect everyone has raved about or is he benefiting from facing some less than great hitting?

    Jayson Stark

This is clearly a test of where he’s at. But it’s hard to argue with 10 hits allowed in 25 innings — against three major-league teams. It’s not like he did that in the New York-Penn League. He’s made big strides, I think. He has three “plus” pitches, and he’s barely even using the change-up, which he worked on all spring. Looks like the real deal to me.

Tommy Heinsolm has a SMOOTH voice? Compared to whom?

  177. Kevin MA May 7th, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Heinshon is the worst – such a homer. I remember the year that the Celtics won like 12 games a couple years ago, Heinshon was so sure that they were going to get Oden in the lottery and be a title contender the following year, and he said Rondo would be the best PG in the NBA the following year and be like Jason Kidd. Also talked up their mediocre role players at the time like Gerald Green and others, who are now out of the league, and said they could be key reserves to their title contender with Oden. Also said Pierce would go to the HOF if he stayed healthy for another 3-4 years!!!!

They didn’t get Oden… and it was priceless seeing Ainge and Rivers’ face in the green room when they ended up with the 5th pick! But, alas, the NBA gifted them with something even better – KG. His buddy McHale decided to help his old team out by trading their franchise player to them and Stern was thrilled hat he revived the Boston team. Let’s see Stern, the Knicks fan, help the Knicks this summer, but he won’t. He got Boston back on the map so his work is done.

Ok, I’m done ranting. Go Yankees!!!

  178. Steve May 7th, 2010 at 5:12 pm

The Romulo Sanchez callup is understandable with Chan Ho Park still on the DL.
This series will likely feature the bullpens and Greg Golson wouldn’t be used much, if at all. With the poor throwing of the Boston catchers, Gardner and Ramiro Pena can handle the speed factor.

The reason for the Mitre/Javy switch is kind of simple. If Pettitte only misses one pass through the rotation by switching Mitre/Javy, you have your rotation back in order.

    Hughes-Red Sox
    CC-Red Sox
    AJ-Red Sox

A general baseball note – why are the Cubs calling up Starlin Castro? What sense does that make?

The team is floundering. Ok. Let’s call up our 20 year top prospect from AA because we have a long track record with handling prospects the right way and Lou Pinella will be patient with his inevitable struggles?

Jim Hendry is a puzzle. Perhaps he’s ready. But very few 20 years olds are, especially at a middle infield position.

I think that they are trying to give the impression that they are actually doing something.

“I?m glad Andy is upset, but it was the right thing to do?.”

And deep down, he knows that. It just doesn’t make him feel any better about it.

  191. blake May 7th, 2010 at 5:21 pm

Because they are the cubs I guess…why do they take their opening day starter (a guy they have to have to win) and stick him in the pen after 2 weeks…the only thing the cubs no how to do is sell beer at Wrigley…they are really good at that.

  193. stuckey May 7th, 2010 at 5:22 pm

I suspect when we see Pettitte’s full quote, it’ll come off a lot softer.. there’ll be a “I understand why, but…” in there…

  194. lulz May 7th, 2010 at 5:22 pm

    So true about Sterling Castro.

The one thing they have that’s closest to a ‘sure thing’, and do the one thing that could screw it up.

In the end, I guess it really doesn’t matter. Their fan base is in for the long haul, no matter what.

OldHossRadbourn NY media defeats Boston media 20-3 in Fenway Park. The Boston media’s decision to focus on “run prevention” looks like a poor one indeed.

The Cubs really are an odd franchise. They put Felix Pie on the end of a yo yo and that didn’t particularly help. They gave Smardijza 10M and couldn’t decide what to do with him.

They just aren’t run in a baseball savvy way. And the pattern is likely to continue with Castro.

Whoa I knew fans would forget what he did last postseason at the first hint of controversy, but I didn’t think it’d be THIS quick.

Dude can’t catch a break, no wonder he doesn’t give a **** anymore what people think of him.

  210. Rockks May 7th, 2010 at 5:38 pm

I really hope we have a rainout sometime during the next week or so. 17 games in a row, especially when we are nicked up, is wayy too much. We need to break it up somehow.

  211. H-Town May 7th, 2010 at 5:39 pm

Hughes pitched in Miami, Atlanta, and Citi Field last year, but it was mostly in relief of Wang. Don’t think he got a chance to hit in any of those games.

  212. All is Well ! Absolutely ! May 7th, 2010 at 5:40 pm

The time is now to put Boston back down where they belong. Sweep them after they got LAA to absolutely LAY DOWN for them. They won’t recover. First step is to put one of the biggest horse’s arses in the game out early, our friend Joshey !

  213. Giuseppe Franco May 7th, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Perhaps if you stopped with your BS complaining and read his entire quote, he said over the last year.

Today is May 7th. He didn’t come back to play until May 8th of 2009 and I’d say what he did during that span really did pay huge dividends. This team doesn’t win the WS without A-Rod. Period.

So either you’re simply a whiner or an A-Rod hater. Either way, maybe you should sit back and watch this team play and stop the complaining. Maybe you’ll learn something.

A-Rod has 2 HRs this year. He looks like Giambi out there towards the end.

He better pick it up and he better pick it up soon. He isin’t getting paid $300 million dollars a year to hit like Melky Cabrera. If he doesn’t start hitting soon (more HRs especially), there is going to be trouble.

  217. Giuseppe Franco May 7th, 2010 at 5:47 pm

    SJ,

Sadly, the stupidity is multiplied ten-fold playing against the Red Sox this weekend.

I personally can’t stand these series’ because too many people (and the media) go way overboard about pretty much everything.

I’m always happy when a series like this is over. Too much BS.

    SJ44 -

Only the sad things is, it’s not necessarily youngsters. :(

At the game I went to Wednesday, I sat in front of an older couple (older than me) and at one point one of the River Dog players was advancing on an errant throw and he stopped at third base. Well, the guy behind be starts yelling at him – “ya gotta run home on that, kid,” “you don’t even know how to run,” “I got a 10 year old at home who runs better than you.”

I turned around and gave him an icy glare. Said nothing. But he didn’t do it again all game.

  232. SAS May 7th, 2010 at 5:55 pm

We gave our younger son, a color pencil drawing of Duke, the Mick, and Mays signed by them. I was never a Snyder fan because he played for the Dodgers.

  233. SJ44 May 7th, 2010 at 5:57 pm

    Doreen,

How sad. I had a guy at one of my nephew’s games start ripping him because he wouldn’t sign about 30 cards he threw in front of his face, 15 minutes before gametime.

He kept heckling him the entire game and my nephew kept laughing at him.

That got him even angrier! lol Eventually, he just left.

We have some real dumb people who follow sports. All you can do is laugh at them because they are morons.
