Yanks roster has Romulo Sanchez on it and 26 players. Move in the works.

The sending Robertson back to AAA?

Sucks, but the Yankees need to DL Jorge. They can’t go around with 1 catcher and play with a short roster. They really should have brought up Chad Moeller… if Cervelli gets hurt, then Pena is the catcher?

Of all pitchers, why Sanchez and his control problems? Can he even give us innings?

  6. Jerkface May 7th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Golson send down? Brandon will be devastated.

Wait, so who exactly do we have on the bench then? Thames, Posada (injured) and Pena?

  9. CR9 May 7th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

    Betsy

Jorge is probably available to pinch hit. The Yanks are probably being cautious with him. The smart approach!

  10. mick May 7th, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Why so shortsighted, bridgejumper, maybe Posada plays tomorrow in the day game, just think for a change.

Im willing to bet that Posada is available, but why rush him unless they have to? Velli has been good so he can start, but Posada will come back in if he has to.

I’m guessing Sanchez is there only to eat innings in a blowout loss.

excited to see sanchez…even if he stinks id like to see him pump some 97 mph fb’s

  16. rodg12 May 7th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

Golson sent down, huh? I guess they need that extra arm with Pettitte likely missing a start and therefore Mitre being unavailable. A little surprised a C move wasn’t made. I’m sure there would have been one if Moeller was on the 40 man, but him not being on the roster does complicate things a bit.

BloggingBombers ARod on Braden: “I really don’t want to extend this… It’s all good.”

    ___

Yeah i agree, however the media wont let it die. FYI, if Braden pitches against us later this year and hits A-Rod, that should be an immediate 10 game suspension.

Burnett got 5 last year for retaliation when he didnt even hit the batter, but Braden is almost planning this months in advance. You cannot have that going on.

  18. Mark in Tampa May 7th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Posada is most likely at the point that he can play if needed, but they are not going to panic and put him in just because they are playing Boston.

Also, just to think for a second, if he plays tonight, he is probably off tomorrow, being day after night. Since he would miss one of the games anyway, they may as well give him the extra day at the front end.

  19. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 7th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Come on, man! Just leave her alone!

Want to talk about negative, Im still 30% worried that the Sox will approach the Padres at the deadline, and even if the Padres are 20 games over .500 or something like that, Jed Hoyer will say “Anything I can do to help the Red Sox, Theo, I shall do. The Red Sox are always going to be my number one priority”

Anybody remember Doug Mirabelli, he played with a team, maybe the Padres, and he said he’d sit in the clubhouse watching “his Red Sox play” on TV.

Without knowing any specifics of his injury, its my opinion that there is no reason to DL him.

He’ll be out maybe today, maybe the weekend. That’s 6 or 7 games missed. No need to DL him and miss 14-15 games without good cause.

The Yanks are probably being precautionary, and the DL is probably not in his future.

    Here’s hoping Im right!! :D

If Jorge needed to be DL’d Chad Moeller would be here. He isn’t so Jorge’s OK. They can’t play Jorge tonight and tomorrow afternoon both, so it makes sense he’s off tonight.

Don’t be so quick to assume the worst.

  30. CR9 May 7th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

LMAO @ Alex. I love that guy! How can a person not love him!

  31. Adam May 7th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

    Gardner-Cervelli-Winn at the bottom?

Ugh… nice lineup, Joe. Hughes is going to have to pitch a shutout with that crap lineup you put out there… you really think those 3 at the bottom of the order can hit Beckett’s curve?

Everyone gets on Alex, but I just saw a gif of Youkilis getting hip tossed by Porcello and I totally forgot he threw his helmet first, thats bush. And Varitek trying to fight A-rod in full catchers gear.

  34. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 7th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

CR ,I understand, but I’m just saying that they need another catcher; it’s hardly an impossiblity that Cervelli goes down. Do you want Pena to be back him up? Also you can backdate with the DL, so you would include the games that Jorge has already missed. I understand the Yankees are in an awkard position if they don’t DL him as they need a pitcher in the pen to replace Mitre so Moeller is out.

  35. Mark in Tampa May 7th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

“LMAO @ Alex. I love that guy! How can a person not love him!”

Well, if he ran across YOUR mound, you probably wouldn’t love him so much. :)

  36. Wave Your Hat May 7th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Sanchez is probably being called up because the Yanks need a long man with Mitre slated to start Tuesday. Sanchez hasn’t pitched well at Scranton but since today would have been his turn in the Scranton rotation he could throw three innings if necessary.

  37. Jerkface May 7th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

    Gardner-Cervelli-Winn at the bottom?

Ugh? nice lineup, Joe. Hughes is going to have to pitch a shutout with that crap lineup you put out there? you really think those 3 at the bottom of the order can hit Beckett?s curve?

Gardner and Cervelli are liable to take his curve for balls and walk, I hope you don’t think Beckett is going to throw them 100% curves :x

And if he throws a fastball he’s done, son! Gardner is going to tomahawk it over the monstah.

  38. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 7th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Wave, I’m not assuming anything about Jorge’s health; I’m just saying it’s not a good idea to go without a true BUC.

Why not play Jorge tonight and Frankie tomorrow if Jorge is good to go?

  39. Andrew May 7th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Yes this is not an indication that Posada’s injury isn’t improving, it’s the opposite. Moeller would have been called up if Posada was not available to play if needed. Sanchez being called up means it seems like they still haven’t decided what to do with Pettitte, whether to DL him or not.

    ————

Why DL Posada if they think he only needs another day or two?

He was available as the emergency catcher earlier this week and you’d have to assume he’s doing better now.

They obviously don’t think it’s serious enough to DL him or they would have already. They’d also have to make a move on the 40-man roster to bring up another catcher.

Cervelli is playing well enough that they can treat Posada with kid gloves.

  41. mick May 7th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

jorge will probably play tomorrow, don’t they know more than you?

  42. Seal May 7th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Sanchez is awesome… the guy throws 07 MPH.

Excited to see him in action.

  43. LGY May 7th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

    Adam,

You do realize that none of the starters are sitting except Jorge because he is injured, right?

And you do realize also that Gardner is hitting like 346 with a 430 OBP?

  44. Judge Smails May 7th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Gardner is currently batting .346 with a .430 OBP and Cervelli is batting .371 (in limited ABs) with a OBP of .436. Not awful for the bottom of the order.

  45. Mark in Tampa May 7th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

If Cervelli was to get injured tonight, I am sure Posada would be able to step in, otherwise he would be DL’ed.

  46. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 7th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Wave, I guess if Sanchez has to come into the game, it’s probably a lost cause anyway, lol. So, at least he can give us innings…….thanks~

  47. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 7th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Mark – I guess you’re right about Po. Honestly, I assumed he was completely unavailable, but that’s a good point.

  48. mick May 7th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

can’t you see she’s playing you for the ATTENTION, nobody could be that negative…and then play the VICTIM, cmon…

  49. Wave Your Hat May 7th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Obviously Posada can back up Cervelli. If he couldn’t, Moeller would be here. He could easily have been called up and Robertson sent down if the Yanks didn’t want to DL Jorge yet.

  50. pat May 7th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

SI_JonHeyman hear pettitte is lobbying not to miss a turn. but his #yankees bosses arent listening. they will skip him 1 turn.

pettitte lobbying not to miss his next turn. i like his guts but sometimes guts overtake brains. Rest the arm until it is 100%. We can afford to throw mitre out there for one start against the tigers.

  52. Jim May 7th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Playing with a 21 man roster is going to come back to bite us soon.

    Get another catcher
    Get another OFer
Bring up an extra pitcher to replace Mitre in the pen

Who else do you want him to put in there? Mauer, Pujols, and Kemp do not play for the Yankees.

Also, hitting Beckett’s curve is not the issue, since Mr Overrated throws it for strikes about 2 starts per season.

So what is Girardi supposed to do?

Rush Posada back? Play a DL’d Granderson?

  58. Mike_Boston May 7th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

No reason to DL Jorgie…he was taking BP today, he’s fine! Like people already said they weren’t going to play him tonight and tomorrow afternoon, might as well PH hit him tonight if they need his stick and get him going for good tomorrow. If they were worried than a 3rd catcher would have been the move today, not Sanchez.

  59. Wave Your Hat May 7th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Betsy, if Jorge can only play one of tonight’s or tomorrow afternoon’s game, which is surely true, doesn’t make complete sense to give him an extra day to recuperate? Why take a chance?

  60. Tom in Yonkers May 7th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Oh God, please don’t tell me that Pete Abe ate Posada, too.

  61. Mark in Tampa May 7th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

“Fran (the original) is the new win leader, by herself, with 10!”

Is the rumor true that Fran is actually Mrs. Girardi? Nobody could be right that much! :)

  62. I Like Inge May 7th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Didn’t Gardner get a 2 out run-scoring hit versus Beckett in Game 1? I believe so. Garnder, Cervelli, and Winn can play. They are major leaguers. They are not stars or big sticks but they can do good things on offense.

  63. NYY626 May 7th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

AHHH I finally won GTLU! I feel like its been weeks.

And it makes me :) that Andy is trying not to skip his start. Such a warrior that Andy!! (logically speaking though I do think it would be better for him to skip a start)

  64. SJ44 May 7th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Girardi’s philosophy with an injured player (non-DL variety) has always been giving him an extra day when the player says he’s ready.

If Jorge needed to be DL’ed, they would have called up Moeller.

If Jorge played tonight, he wouldn’t have played tomorrow. Day game after night game.

Seems to me, they feel he is good to go tomorrow and will play tomorrow and Sunday night.

If needed, he can catch tonight or he wouldn’t be available.

Not every injury requires a DL stay.

In Sanchez’s case, it means Mitre starts in Detroit on Tuesday, and they skip Pettitte a turn, and Sanchez is the long man until the middle of next week when they see how Pettitte is feeling.

Once you step away from the ledge, relax and think, these moves are pretty easy to figure out.

As far as the lineup whiners, you have made fools out of yourselves for the last two years with the constant complaining about the lineup. Why should today be any different?

  65. Simon May 7th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

“Ugh… nice lineup, Joe. Hughes is going to have to pitch a shutout with that crap lineup you put out there… you really think those 3 at the bottom of the order can hit Beckett’s curve?”

    What a stupid comment.

  66. SJ44 May 7th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

    Simon,

That’ on the low scale of stupid here. Wait until school is out, there will be dumber people posting gibberish about the lineup.

Just the way it is with the children on gameday. They can’t help themselves.

  67. charlestonchew May 7th, 2010 at 4:33 pm

I think Thames should be starting over Winn.

Winn looks silly at the plate and Thames hits the fastball pretty hard. A righty with that wall in left field just seems like a better move to me. Not to mention that Winn can’t seem to hit and Thames is mashing the ball.

I guess we’ll see how the move pans out. Other than that, great lineup. You guys who are complaining need to take a step back and look at the lineup.

  68. Irreverent Discourse May 7th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

This makes perfect sense. We hit Beckett well so we shouldn’t need his bat tonight. This gives Jorge an extra day and then we bat him in the day game vs Bucholz who is pitching very well right now.

Or… if you prefer… OMG THE SKY IS FALLING!
