The return of Javier Vazquez

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc, Podcast on May 11, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

White Sox Yankees Baseball

Javier Vazquez hasn’t pitched since May 1. In that time, he’s thrown two bullpens, each a little longer and more aggressive than his usual bullpen sessions.

“Usually my bullpens are nice and easy,” he said. “These I pushed it a little bit.”

There are few mysteries here. Vazquez said he hasn’t really been working on anything new. He’s been battling the same mechanical issues all season, and the bullpens didn’t tell him anything about the progress of his fastball. Basically, Vazquez said, he needs to get back in a game and find out where he stands. Is it better that he’s starting on the road instead of in the hostile environment of Yankee Stadium?

“I just need to pitch well,” he said. “On the road or at home, it doesn’t matter.”

Vazquez starts against the Tigers tonight. Here’s his session with the media from yesterday.

Good luck, Javy. We’re rooting for ya! :)

I’m not expecting much from him tonight even if they play, but I’ll be hoping really hard. The Yankees need this guy to perform up to his capabilites.

I dont think I can play GTLU today. With Jeter in this horrendous slump I?m sure Girardi is going to bench him tonight and play Pena, so now the bottom of the order is too confusing for me to try and figure out. Damn you Derek!
    **********

I was playing with the idea of DHing Derek and playing Pena. But I never win when I overthink GTLU
    _________________________________________________________________________
Erica, why would you DH a guy who can?t hit/is an automatic out? Makes no sense. Let Pena play SS and have someone else DH.

    ********************

You are right. I am so silly. Definitely DH Thames instead!

  4. Shame Spencer May 11th, 2010 at 1:51 pm

If the guy gets through 5 innings after giving up 3 runs I think we’d all take that, no?

Expect a lot of Nova tonight

Here is hoping Javy gets that Mojo back. Miranda takes over for NJ with ease and Logan is not sent down. I still think he is better than Marte.

  7. SJ44 May 11th, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Logan isn’t better than Marte. Not by a long shot.

There is nothing in his career, let alone his time with the Yankees, that suggests otherwise.

Logan is what he is. He has put too many guys on base his whole career and he is continuing that trend with the yanks. I know it is a small sample size but he doesn’t instill confidence in me. He has a good arm but he is no where as good as marte.

A-Rod may not hit 50 homers again, but who cares. If he hits .300, he will no doubt have 100 RBIs in this lineup. Whether that is 15 HR 100 RBI or 35 HR 100 RBIs, it doesnt matter as long as he is driving in the runs.

  29. GeorgeInJax May 11th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

One bright spot on Sunday’s loss was how well Romulo Sanchez pitched. Hopefully Nova can do as well if needed tonight.

  30. Al May 11th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

    CR,

Logan actually threw a nice pitch to Boesch. But as expected, he decides to be a Yankee killer and hit a RBI triple.

Tigers play Boston after we leave there (and just their luck, we face Verlander in the series finale and Boston gets to face Scherzer-Willis-Porcello), and I guarantee that Boesch will go 1-12 with 5 Ks and 8 LOB in that series.

I didn’t watch the whole game, but didn’t we do a pretty good job with miggy?

Unfortunately, I did see the inning with the guy who mixes in the knuckleball. He fooled the guys a lot.

  34. Chip May 11th, 2010 at 2:15 pm

    Logan’s problems are two fold:

    1. He doesn’t throw strikes
    2. He may throw 99 mph but it’s very straight and ML hitters can turn around a straight fastball no matter how fast it is.

For Logan to become a major factor in this or any other bullpen he needs to trust his fastball and he needs to work on another pitch or two that he can throw regularly.

As an aside – did you see where Toronto will have to go to Philly to play a home series against the Phillies? The games will be played with AL rules.

  35. JohnC May 11th, 2010 at 2:16 pm

Is this the Yanks only trip to Detroit this season? If so, and tonight’ game is rained out, they’d have to play a doubleheader tommorrow or Thursday. So they will wait quite a while to get tonight’s game in.

  36. Wave Your Hat May 11th, 2010 at 2:16 pm

Making comments about the areas where you think the Yanks are deficient or what you think they should be doing differently is not the same as panicking or not realizing that the Yanks are 21-10 and only a half-game out of first.

Basically, it’s kind of boring to say “wow, Cano is sure playing great” or “Cervelli has really come in handy, hasn’t he”, or “I always knew Phil had it in him”.

It’s the nature of comments to pick at flaws rather than dwell on strengths.

    Fran-

I had a different line up submission. This could be my big chance to gain ground :-)

  38. CR9 May 11th, 2010 at 2:16 pm

    Al

Im not saying that Logan’s stuff is not good or that he cant make good pitches. Im saying that he looks afraid to throw strikes, even with his upper 90s fastball. SJ44 has said the same thing.

As for Boesch, he will go hitless for his entire career against the Red Sox.

  39. Chip May 11th, 2010 at 2:16 pm

My thinking on the lineup would be:

    Derek
    Gardner
    Tex
    Alex
    Cano
    Jorge
    Swisher
    Miranda
    Winn

(this way he splits up the lefties)

Suggesting a trade of Romine for Damon is panicking. Either that, or a joke.

Damon generally said the right things. But he may have flubbed a bit saying that he didn’t know if he’d be with the Tigers in August. :?

  46. CR9 May 11th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

Anyone remember when the Giants got an extra home game, when the Saints had to play at the Meadowlands because of Katrina.

The Giants got bashed throughout the media, and it was said that it was “unfair”

I wonder if the media will say the same thing, with the Phillies getting 3 extra home games.

  47. JohnC May 11th, 2010 at 2:22 pm

who suggested trading ROmine for Damon? That would be an 80s Steinbrenner type move.

  48. Wave Your Hat May 11th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

“Suggesting a trade of Romine for Damon is panicking. Either that, or a joke.”

I missed that one, m. Must have been eating lunch. But if the Yanks wouldn’t pay Johnny $7MM, I don’t think they’d much want to pay him and give up Romine too, do you?

  50. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 11th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Romine for Damon has to be a joke – if it’s not, that’s just sad.

  51. m May 11th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

I saw a reference to it, I’ll try to track it down. :)

  52. RayVT May 11th, 2010 at 2:24 pm

Juan Mirandi reminds me of Kendry Morales, only Juan was better. Morales got a chance with the Angels to play and has done well, (May slump asside). I think Mirandi will hit given a chance to play regularly and as a LH DH he will get ample opportunity to do so until Nick gets back.

I also think the next 2 weeks will decide if Winn will remain a Yankee IMO. He should get plenty of playing time as well the next couple of weeks. If he still looks like a project to get back on track, then Colin Curtis or Russo could be back manning LF for the Yanks. (Or a trade) I’m inclined to think Winn will step up his game a notch or two and do well. I hope he does.

Repost: No offense to the poster of this today but trading Romine for Damon this year could be the dumbest thing I’ve read in awhile.

If the Tigers move him it’s because they’re out of it and they want to dump salary. They would take the proverbial bag of balls as long as they’re off the hook for the $. You don’t move Romine unless a young stud at a premium position is involved.

  54. Tim May 11th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Has anyone sat in the jim beam suites at the stadium? looking for a scouting report on how good it might be

  55. G. Love May 11th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

Actually the poster suggested trading “Romaine” for Damon.

I would most certainly trade lettuce for Damon or even cash which is sometimes referred to as lettuce.

That said, Michael Kay would trade Kevin Romine which would also be fine with me.

  56. pat May 11th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

    Jeers

    I’ll respond to you.

I agree. Klapisch wrote an article about D Wright’s increased Ks. To paraphrase a part of it, Reggie said power hitters strike out about 100 times a year. Alot more or less than that isn’t good but about 100 means they are taking an aggressive approach which is what they need to take.

Alex seems to be taking strike 1, working counts more, using the middle of the field more and striking out less which made me wonder if Alex has changed his approach and that has contributed to his lower power numbers.

  57. Fran (the original) May 11th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Stan – it comes with the territory of being a fan. As far as I’m concerned, we should win 162 games every season. I realize this is demanding and irrational, but I’m a Yankees fan, that’s what we’re good at.
    ==========================================================
Not as far from the truth as it seems.
Many Yankee fans are hated for this sense of entitlement.
If you think you are excepted because of your youth, it is passed down from generation to generation.
BTW, we have a “new” tradition of winning that has begun in 1996. This might explain why some think we have to win every game. That and a football mentality.

We play once a day, not once a week.

  74. m May 11th, 2010 at 2:42 pm

Is that picture from Javy’s first go around with the Yanks, or is it recent?

Kinda weird that he’s on his front foot before his forward arm motion starts. Maybe it’s just the camera making things look unusual.

  95. ac1 May 11th, 2010 at 2:53 pm

And with McCarver, the way he insisted beckett had no intent throwing at cervelli twice (both after step outs), jeter on the first pitch, and cano’s leg, just because they were in situations that a normal person wouldnt hit someone, was just the most annoying crap i have ever heard. I mean, who was he kidding. Yes, Beckett lost control, however, he was also smiling as he lost control.

  102. Bronx Jeers May 11th, 2010 at 2:56 pm

    Pat,

Hah! Reggie wishes he only struck out 100 times a season. He’s more like a 150 K guy.

It’s funny bit A-rod is the one guy on the All-time Strikeout list that could eventually pass Reggie to take the top spot. But not if he’s only going to strike out 100 times per year. That will leave him just under Reggie

Reggie’s probably calling A-Rod to ask him what the heck he’s doing!

Montero grew up a Sox fan too:

In 2004, Venezuelan teenager Jesus Montero cheered when Boston won the World Series. Since then, the population of Red Sox nation has decreased by one.

Montero’s loyalty shifted in 2006 when the New York Yankees showed they had enough faith in his potential that they were willing to invest a $2 million signing bonus on a 16-year-old catcher with top-end hitting power.

If Phil Hughes can “find it” after his troubles, Javy Vazquez certainly can.

Baseball seasons doesn’t always go in a straight line for everybody.

Don’t fall into the trap 90% of the people who post on here do and that’s take every short sample stat and expand it to an entire season of work.

If Javy Vazquez has two good starts, something he is certainly capable of doing, all of those awful stats change.

  167. SJ44 May 11th, 2010 at 3:42 pm

    Betsy,

Very simple. They will keep running him out there because there are no other alternatives at this time.

Where does Hughes fit in? He was lost for almost 2 years in a sea of injuries and ineffectiveness. A MUCH longer time than Javy Vazquez has EVER struggled.

Yet, the Yankees hung tough with the guy and its paid off.

Now, we want to cut bait with a veteran guy after a handful of starts? It makes no sense except for the panic stricken.

Its wonderful that the talk radio and blog world scream, GET HIM OUT OF HERE!!

However, once that crowd calms down and let’s reality set in, answer me this…..who replaces him in the rotation?

It ain’t easy to answer that question, isn’t it?

That’s why you stick with the guy and hope he get can through this rough patch because the alternatives aren’t appetizing at all.

  168. Patrick May 11th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

I have no idea, Patrick. Read the articles – I have no idea what to believe. He’s messed up mentally? Physically? I have no idea, but just saying that he absolutely, positively will turn it around doesn’t make it so. I didn’t say he wouldn’t, I just said that I personally don’t have confidence that he will

    —-

The fact is, Javy has been a good pitcher for the last 10 years and he’s 33 years old. There is no reason to believe he won’t have a good season this year too. Saying you have no confidence in him turning it around is silly based on previous data. It would essentially be like saying you have no confidence in Tex turning it around after his terrible April.

  169. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 11th, 2010 at 3:49 pm

I never suggested the Yankees cut bait with Javy yet, but I believe you are trying to say I’m a hypocrite for believing one thing about Phil and another about Javy and beyond how I feel about that, it’s just not true. IMO, Phil is not a good comparison to Javy. The Yankees were looking to the future with this kid – they could afford to be patient, especially since they always remained high on him. We’re talking THIS year……I didn’t tell anyone how to feel about Javy and I never actually said “he won’t get it turned around”. Everyone is entitled to their personal feelings and right now, no – I don’t know if he will or not. He’s a good pitcher, so he absolutely could, but do I have confidence? No, because I don’t know what his problems are. Someone posted an article by former scout Frankie Piliere in which he went into great detail about Javy’s mechanical issues and he said that it would not be an easy fix. Even Cashman knows it’s not going to be a quick fix. Again, just because I don’t have confidence that he will turn it around doesn’t mean he won’t. If he doesn’t, either the Yankees make a trade or they will have a fight on their hands to make the playoffs.

  170. Wave Your Hat May 11th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I’ll let CB chime in on this, but I have an issue with labeling poor results over a limited period of time as being “small sample size” and letting it go at that.

Most of us have no clue whether any given number of data points (games, innings pitched, ABs, what have you) are sufficient to produce a statistically significant result.

For instance, let’s assume that Javy Vazquez is “really” a 4.00 ERA pitcher in the AL East. Then let’s say in 5 starts he manages 23 IP, with a 9.78 ERA and a 2.043 WHIP. At what point are you statistically justified in saying that your original assumption is false and that Vazquez is not “really” a 4.00 ERA pitcher but worse?

    I don’t know.

The thing is, Vazquez may really have an issue, or maybe he doesn’t, and if he does have an issue small sample size isn’t the problem. The problem is telling if there is an issue or not.

In Javy’s case, there seems to be a clear issue, his velocity is down and his command is off. It’s not like he’s just been the victim of an absurdly high BABIP or something.

I’m usually sympathetic to the track record argument but it is also possible that the underying quality you are measuring is not in a steady state or in changing in some measurable linear or non-linear way. It could be a discontinuous function of some type.

Winn started me thinking this way, Javy has me wondering.
