BloggingBombers NYY lineup Game 2 vs DET 5/12: Jeter DH, Gardner 8, Teixeira 3, Rodriguez 5, Cano 4, Swisher 9, Thames 7, Cervelli 2, Pena 6, Hughes 1

    ___

WHOA… Thames in LF AND Pena back in the lineup?
I will not be a lineup complainer, but it is a bit perplexing.

  2. CR9 May 12th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Flooder or whatever your real handle is

Maturity. Class. If you are a real Yankees fan, you’d understand those 2 terms. If not, you probably wont.

  3. Brandon's Awesome (B/c my AWESOMENESS believes in tasing fans that jump fences) May 12th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

Thames in LF is gonna hurt us, I’m pulling for ya Nino…these bandwagon fans aren’t but you can do it.

“I root for the Yankees not Javier, Yankees lost therefore I?m not happy..LOL”

You’re going to be uphappy quite a few more times this season. Or didn’t you get the memo saying the Yankees were going to lose some games this season?

I’m not unhappy in the least. B flippin D they lost the game. Javy Vazquez pitched a great game. Do you get it? (this is for anyone licking their wounds right now.) The Yankees have a fantastic record and one of the best they’ve had at this point in the season in forever.

Do any of you who are whining about the offense (again I am not reading all the posts so I don’t know who has said what but I have read some of the responses so I know things have been said) realize that sometimes a really good pitcher will come along, or a pitcher who has a really good outing? You ever play ball when it’s cold and damp, and the pitcher has a good game going? Did you hit out many homeruns?

Grow up. The Yankees are probably the most solid team in baseball. Thank your lucky stars they have the team they do. Injury after injury and they continue to come through series after series.

IMO some of you don’t deserve to root for this team. You should be penalized to have to root for teams that really have problems. Then maybe you’d come back and show that you know what perspective is.
    ________

Trisha calm down, maybe you didn’t read my full post, that was sarcasm, I said I was happy for Javy and that if he continues this we will have an Amazing rotation. I’m not one of those fans to cry over a 21-11 start, I’m happy with where this team is not even considering the injuries and the lack of home games.

  5. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 12th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

Really? Thames in the OF? Phil, throw lots of 2 seamers tonight and try to direct any fly balls away from LF……..

  6. Andrew May 12th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

Maybe Thames will excel via familiarity with Comerica’s outfield? Not excited to watch The Butcher out there again

  7. jz May 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

    Javy continues to lose!

    blame the offense.

  8. Jerkface May 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

    Thames in the outfield again?

Not liking that, but Bomberman sucks and Hughes is good. Shut em out.

  9. Hit Girl May 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Yankees need some help. Start with moving Jeter out of lead off, oops you can’t he’s captain GDIP,my bad!

  10. Bob in NH May 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Yankee roster has both Golson and Russo wearing #27. Some box scores had Russo pinch running in game 1 but as Chad mentioned, it was Golson, which makes more sense given his great speed. I don’t understand why the Yankees gave Russo #27 when Golson had it a week earlier…..trying to save money on laundry!

  11. Erin May 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

    I lost.

At least I got one GTLU win today, and I correctly guessed that Jeter would DH tonight. ;)

  12. Carl NJ May 12th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

And Girardi goes back to Pena in the 2nd game. And he plays Thames in the field against a RIGHTY, no less.

I have to jump on the fire Girardi bandwagon now. That is simply unacceptable lineup for a team that has lost 3 in a row. He puts a butcher in left field and puts the guy who killed us today (Pena) back in there!! What the hell?

If I’m Hughes, I go back to the team hotel. Why would I want to pitch in the rain and cold when my manager doesn’t even care enough to put a good lineup (offensive or defensive) out there. Let Nova start the game.

  13. Michelle May 12th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

What part of Thames can’t hit righties or play LF doesn’t Girardi understand? He couldn’t even handle LF in the Fenway dump how will he handle a big outfield?! They really need to bring Miranda up and give him a chance at DH. The bottom of the lineup is dreadful.

  14. Enoch44 May 12th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I wish they would just DH Posada and have Cervelli play more. Playing Winn and Pena will catch up to this team quickly.

I know there’s a risk to losing the DH if Cervelli gets hurt, but I’ll take it.

  15. Erin May 12th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Ledger_Yankees Girardi said Vazquez showed better command of all of his pitches, was watching the sixth inning closely to see how Vazquez would handle it.

  16. Clip May 12th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Awesome lineup. Guess Joe doesn’t mind losing 4 in a row.

  17. Jerkface May 12th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Wahhh my name is brandon and someone said something bad about a prospect i’m in love with they must be bandwagoners.

Maybe you should cheer for Russo as well? Instead of cheering for Pena to the detriment of Russo? Maybe you are racist.

  18. Trevor May 12th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

I don’t think Russo can play SS. Even so he can play 3B. And he wasn’t in there in game 1. So understand Pena at SS tonight.

Now watch Pena go 4 for 4.

    Thames in LF? Ouch!

Winn is practically an automatic out batting right handed, with the injuries Giradi has a very thin bench.

  20. Brandon's Awesome (B/c my AWESOMENESS believes in tasing fans that jump fences) May 12th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Pena was hitting #9, how does he kill us over that top and middle part of the lineup?

  21. Andrew May 12th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

“I know there’s a risk to losing the DH if Cervelli gets hurt, but I’ll take it.”

No comment on the risk of playing an almost-40 year old catcher coming off two minor leg injuries in both heads of a doubleheader in early May?

  22. Rich in NJ May 12th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

    Girardi has lost it.

  23. Jerkface May 12th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

This is where the Pena thing doesn’t make sense. You want to play Pena over Russo at SS for defense, so why not play Russo at 3B in game 1 and let him use his compact stroke against Porcello.

Then play Pena at SS in game 2. Instead we run Pena out there for both games?

  24. Patrick May 12th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Why is Pena playing 2 games in a row? That’s just stupid.

Russo isn’t great at SS but he’s less of a detriment in the field than Thames is.

  25. Mark- Can't touch this May 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

    Is Miranda still hurt?

  26. Irreverent Discourse May 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Carl NJ – The only people that killed us today make $18+ million and play at the corners. Stop blaming the backups for losing a game. Unreal.

  27. m-sending out an S.o.S. May 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Girardi going with the “C lineup is undefeated” rationale.

Please run Thames through the metal detector to make sure they took out the ball magnet.

  28. Michelle May 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Thames has misplayed a ball in LF in every game that he has played out there. Girardi knows he can’t play the field so stop putting him out there. Especially against a right hander. WIth the offense slumping so much you can’t give up extra runs on defense.

  29. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Bonderman’s a righty? Then I really don’t understand this – why the heck is Golson up here if Joe doesn’t care about OF defense?

  30. Jason May 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Now the media is going to say we can’t beat good teams and cite how we lost a series to the Angels and Tigers….

  31. Doreen May 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

No winners in GTLU Round 2

miggs guessed that Thames would be in the lineup, but as a DH. No one else had Thames, although a couple of people guessed Jeter would DH with Pena at SS.

Thanks to everyone who participated in today’s GTLU Doubleheader. :)

  32. Hit Girl May 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

You can’t tell me Cerevelli sitting on the bench hasn’t hurt the Yankees. Big mistake DH Jeter, he isn’t hitting. another automatic out. Kevin Long should work with Jeter !

  33. CR9 May 12th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Kevin Gregg comes in for the Jays. Loses control, throwing 5 balls in at AB to Drew, who then doubles. Tying run at the plate.

It dont mean a thing when you got that Red Sox swing.

  34. Trevor May 12th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Why is Russo up here again if he’s not going to play and knowing Cano knee is fine?

  35. RS May 12th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Sox are down 3-1 in the ninth inning. one out, Drew on 2B with Ortiz up.

  36. muffinstump May 12th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

    alright, twins win over sox.

  37. Jerkface May 12th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Pena was hitting #9, how does he kill us over that top and middle part of the lineup?

He had 2 of the biggest ABs of the game. He accounted for 20% swing in the tigers favor by WPA

  38. Gary Gnu May 12th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

that’s just that the type of ho-hum line up that scores 10 runs.

“I’m telling you, you just predict baseball, Suzyn.”

  39. KWAN' May 12th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

“No comment on the risk of playing an almost-40 year old catcher coming off two minor leg injuries in both heads of a doubleheader in early May?”

I don’t think it’s risky for him to bat four more times.

  41. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 12th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

We’re going to be criticized for having the nerve to criticize Girardi….

  42. ac1 May 12th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Winn is practically an automatic out batting right handed, with the injuries Giradi has a very thin bench

    ___

Bonderman is a righty. Winn would be batting lefty.

  43. Eric K May 12th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Do you mean to tell me that Posada can’t DH tonight? This lineup would be 10 times better with Jorge DHing, Jeter at SS, and Thames hitting eighth. THIS IS RIDICULOUS.

  44. Brandon's Awesome (B/c my AWESOMENESS believes in tasing fans that jump fences) May 12th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Coming from some scrub poster called JerkFace, who touts somebody who hasn’t done it in the ML level, or maybe just maybe I know that Russo can’t field, he has hit in the minors and in ST but those 2 ABs in Boston weren’t exactly ringing endorsements, also under throwing immensely from 3B didn’t help matters. So yeh I’ll take the younger, faster, more experienced, more versatile young ML in Pena over Russo.

    CR,

Of course, the Jays are going to blow this. Of course they are.

They scored 12 runs and lost to this team.
The next night, they gave up and and lost to this team.

The Jays are the new Orioles. Cito looks thrilled that the Red Sox are rallying…

  48. Mark- Can't touch this May 12th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

    __________

I get your argument but are you really judging Russo by 2 ABs you saw in Boston?

  62. Lance May 12th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

    Winn is 36 years old.

You think he can play both games of a doubleheader?

And you want Golson AND Pena in the lineup together? Atleast Thames is a decent hitter.

This roster construction leaves a lot to be desired. Girardi is doing the best he can.

  63. Wave Your Hat May 12th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Pena or Russo, I don’t see the point of them both being here if you aren’t going to pinch hit for them in a crucial situation, which Girardi elected not to do in Game 1. I won’t criticize that decision, I’m sure there was a basis for it, but if Pena shouldn’t have been pinch hit for what purpose is Russo serving? Insurance against losing the DH if someone gets hurt? I guess Ms. Russo appreciates the ML per diem but sheesh…

  64. ac1 May 12th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Ump is Dale Scott. Although it could be anyone since for the most part they all suck.

  67. vtred May 12th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Russo is righty. Why would he play him over the switch-hitting Pena?

The only reason Thames is in there is because he has no choice. Winn is an old man, why play him both games of the DH?

  68. CR9 May 12th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

This Kevin Gregg is a loser.

He hasnt thrown a strike the entire inning.

  70. Patrick from CT May 12th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Would be nice to have another power lefty bat in the lineup, but Posada needs to rests his legs after catching game 1 and I agree Jeter should probably DH if he’s not playing SS… Thames should be better in LF at that park since he played so may games there. We are missing Granderson more and more for sure…
I think I would have played Russo at 3b game 1 and Pena at SS game two though.
Pena does hit better from the left side though…
Oh well that’s why Joe gets paid the big $$$…

Come on Phil, we need you this game!

So yeh I’ll take the younger, faster, more experienced, more versatile young ML in Pena over Russo.

Pena had an under .700 OPS last year. Russo is a career .300 hitter in the minors. Pena is a career .255 hitter. He did well hitting .280 last year with no power and no patience. It was very helpful for him to provide ANYTHING last year.

This year he isn’t providing anything at all. I am not saying to trade Pena and install Russo anywhere permanently. But Russo deserves a shot.

His track record is better than Penas.

This is hispanic bias you’re showing here.

  73. Andrew May 12th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

I definitely see the criticism over playing Thames in left and starting Pena at short after he also started the day game. However I do understand the bigger picture at least for the Pena decision, in that keeping Jeter/ARod/Posada as fresh & healthy as possible for the entire season is of utmost importance to Girardi. So it may cost them some production at the bottom of the order but in the bigger picture it’s smarter then playing Jeter 18 innings at SS in 1 day.

  74. CR9 May 12th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Russo would have played if we were facing a lefty.

If Leyland brought in Coke, then Thames or Russo would have pinch hit there.

Girardi is a match-up guy. Russo will get his ABs against lefties.

“I get your argument but are you really judging Russo by 2 ABs you saw in Boston?”

Mark here’s the thing, I can’t argue starting a player in a DH who hasn’t played in awhile and has under 30 ABs as a UTY, he’s 23, he’s allowed to struggle, he’s here for his 4 or 5 tools, but now we lose and it’s on this kid? send him down start someone in his spot who hasn’t earned it?

Nino did everything the organization asked of him last season, he’s earned our support, he went down and came back and was a big pt. of our winning, so he’s earned more than 30 ABs before I tell him, go to Scranton.

  85. Jerkface May 12th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Jerkface thats not how the WPA chart works and you know it.

Pena is -.207 WPA for the game. His double play and his fly out with the bases loaded both contributed negatively enough to the win that they got ‘pointed’ by Fangraph’s WPA chart

  88. Haiku-man May 12th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

  89. winn&thames May 12th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

  90. Jerkface May 12th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

I also never suggested to send Pena to scranton, only that it might occur if Russo performed well in any playing time which he has not received.

My point of starting Russo at third in game 1 and then Pena at SS in Game 2 makes more sense than ruining the lineup twice by starting Pena in both games.

“Pena had an under .700 OPS last year.

His track record is better than Penas.”

He deserves more than 30 ABs

When he does it in the majors make that arguement.

“This is hispanic bias you’re showing here.”

WTH does that have to do w/ anything? was it hispanic bias when I ripped into Javy Vazquez? was it hispanic bias when I said I’d rather have Colin Curtis up here than Randy Winn, was it hispanic bias when I said I’d prefer Cisco catching over Georgy, was it hispanic bias when I said D-Rob deserves to find himself up here, or how Logan is the best thing out of that Melky trade?

  106. Al May 12th, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Why not mention how A-Rod has 3 HRs and is basically a singles hitter now?

Or that Cano hasn’t hit a HR or double in like 3 weeks

or how Jeter has like 3 hits in his last 12 games?

Stop blaming Winn, Gardner, Pena, Russo, Thames. It’s not their job to win games for us.

  113. Gary May 12th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Jeter and Posada are both fairly poor hitters against Bonderman.

Jeter is hitting .242, Posada .227. Jeter has 3 HRs though.

With the exception of A-Rod, all of our hitters are hitting .242 or below against Bonderman.

  114. Patrick from CT May 12th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Just a question, why is Russo up if he’s not going to play.
    Shouldn’t they bring up Miranda?
    Golson or Russo not both.
I just think Miranda is the natural replacement for Nick Johnson, No?

Sure I do. You’re absolutely blowing up because I had the nerve to suggest Girardi should have started Russo in game 1 of a double header (that i did not realize he had planned to play Pena in BOTH games!) .

Lets see, your examples there, well Randy WInn isn’t hispanic so Curtis vs Winn doesn’t matter there. Cisco is a different kind of latino from Jorge, so you might like Cisco better. D-Rob isn’t a good example either. And you touting Logan is due to your ridiculous prospect fetish.

I think that the Yankees offensive woes can be traced back to all of the injuries. The hitters see guys going down each day and put pressure on themselves to try and pick up the slack. The big hitters probably don’t have any faith that the Winns and the Thames of the world are going to come through so they try harder and fail. Seeing Damon on the other side can’t be helping matters either.

“Miranda will eventually get called up and Girardi can platoon him with Thames as the DH to have a little more pop at the bottom of the lineup.”

The problem with this is Girardi has been talking in the press about taking the “rotating DH” approach to the slot for the time being. I also think Miranda would have been called up today if they were serious about playing him in a straight platoon with Thames.

  187. GeorgeInJax May 12th, 2010 at 4:49 pm

I agree that with enough AB’s Golson could outhit Winn, but Russo is a more consistent hitter.
I like Golson, but he’s still in the minors because he hasn’t been consistent at the plate.

Thames is what he is – a specialist vs LHP He’s done a decent job in that role so far.

Winn is disappointing. With all of Golson’s tools I’d play him ahead of Winn.

Brandon, how’s that Erick Threets doing?

    Still awesome?

“Winn is disappointing. With all of Golson’s tools I’d play him ahead of Winn.”

I’ve been saying this. I like Winn but 25th man on the roster? pffffft give Golson 60 ABs and watch him find his swing.

Winn will be OK against righties. Remember, he’s the fourth outfielder. There is no way Golson will hit better against RHP than Winn, get a grip people.

Patrick, how’s that butt sniffing my ancient posts going?

    still trying to be awesome?

I was installing my new OS. Now that I’m back on the laptop, I did a better analysis of today’s GTLU.

Girardi did win, but Erica and NYY626 were one player off: They both had Winn in LF rather than Thames, and everything else correctly matching Joe’s lineup. Good work, girls, if a little short. :)

Girardi is just baffling at times, and makes irrational decisions.

Comerica has one of the biggest left fields in all of baseball and so Girardi decides to start one of the worst outfielders in all of baseball. This isn’t hyperbole– Marcus Thames is one of the worst outfielders in all of baseball and hurts the team by playing there.

Thames is only good for one thing: he is a pretty good hitter against lefties. He isn’t even great, just pretty good. Against righties, he is a career dead-average hitter and has been below average over the last few seasons.

Randy Winn is a superior fielder than Thames, by a country mile. It’s not even close. Randy Winn is a pretty good outfielder and Thames is a liability. On top of that, Randy Winn has not only hit righties better over his career, but has done so over each of the last three or four seasons.

Unless Winn is hurt, there is absolutely no reason to play Thames in the field.

Morever, Pena cannot hit worth a lick. He is a slick fielder, but I would much rather see Russo in the lineup. Move Arod over to short, and put Russo at third.

You had me going until you moved ARod to short…

  195. Thank You Michael Lewis May 12th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

    Wave Your Hat:

Perhaps I rushed that out of frustration. I have no idea if Arod can still the position but when he gave it up to come to the Yankees, he left as the best defensive short stop in the league, along with Adam Everett.

The move would create a media firestorm just as it did when Arod first came to New York. But Girardi should only focus on what gives the team the best opportunity to win. And so far, Girardi has acted in a counter-intuitive fashion.

I think he is better than a lot of managers, but he makes his share of puzzling decisions. Anyone will win a lot of games with the roster in New York.

Man this place is a cesspool when we lose.

Everybody who is talking about being up on the Sux needs to turn their attention to who is actually leading this division.
