Yankees lose opener in Detroit

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on May 12, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It’s hard to blame this one on Javier Vazquez. In his return to the Yankees rotation, the struggling Vazquez pitched seven strong innings but got absolutely no help from his offense. Two runs in the sixth inning were too many for the Yankees, who were shutout in a 2-0 loss at Comerica Park. It was their third straight loss. They’ll have a chance to end the losing streak in a few hours when they play today’s second game.

    Betsy

Puppy is not doing any better. Going to have to call the vet tomorrow.

I’m sure there was also a “Yanks come back in 9th vs. Valverde” post in the pipeline just in case.

  3. Copelius May 12th, 2010 at 3:24 pm

Is it just me or is Chad trying to find the goofiest facial expressions on the AP pictures he posts? Not that I mind but it seems to be a trend.

JV-Great job on the mound today. I will take this effort everytime.
No chance JV can be blamed for the loss.
Our bats ran into some good pitching. Pena was unable to get a clutch hit.

Despite the loss, very happy about JV pitching so well. Plus, he saved the bullpen for
    game 2 tonight.

  5. ac1 May 12th, 2010 at 3:24 pm

oh, 2-0? ok, better than 4-0.

go for sweep tonight. Just pathetic.

    ___

Uhhh Yeah except they play tomorrow too.

Wow, a game played in less than 2 and a half hours……..Let’s not lay this all at the feet of the bottom of the order; our big guys are simply not looking all that hot right now ……not consistently anyway. Phil had better pitch a shutout tonight.

I’m very happy about Javy and I’m happy for him; hopefully he can take the positives from this game into his next.

  7. Jeremy May 12th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

Can someone throw a 95 fastball at Valverde. That guy makes me sick !

  8. Michelle May 12th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

Girardi should make everyone take a nap between games. It seems the offense has not recovered since arriving in Detroit at 4 am.

  9. Mark- Can't touch this May 12th, 2010 at 3:25 pm

Hate to waste a good pitching hope the offense shows up and backs up Hughes tonight, Hughes has been a stopper all year. Lets go Hughes!!

  10. mick May 12th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Javy was loose and free today, let’s see him do it again before we do cartwheels.

  11. XLJ May 12th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Gutless effort by the yanks. If they continue to play like this is Girardi job should be on the line!

  12. YANKEES May 12th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

What was this? They must be asleep.

  13. Erin May 12th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

  14. Terry from NH May 12th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

Well they lose 2-0 with Javy pitching a good game.. The injuries seem to be catching up with them.. Still waiting for Alex and Tex to get in a groove.. Not sure Tex is out of it yet, but hopefully soon..

  15. Arno May 12th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Agh… Javy pitches a relative gem (relative) and the immortal Porcello shuts down the Yankees offense. Pathetic.

  16. CR9 May 12th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Great job by Javy today! Too bad our offense was saddled with bad luck for half the day, and the other half, they didnt show up in support of him.

  17. Michelle May 12th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

  19. Hit Girl May 12th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

if the yanks don’t like valverde’s act, they can actually try to hit him or take some walks if he’s wild. they have nobody but themselves to blame for his antics

  20. ac1 May 12th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Gutless effort by the yanks. If they continue to play like this is Girardi job should be on the line!

    ___

IDIOT…. Yankees still have the 2nd best record in baseball.

  21. Billy D May 12th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

“I’m sure there was also a “Yanks come back in 9th vs. Valverde” post in the pipeline just in case.”

No kidding, eh? That was like the newspapers with the canned obits at the ready when someone of note buys the eternal dirtnap.

  22. SJ44 May 12th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Girardi’s job is on the line?

Looks like moron central is kicking in now.

This may be the dumbest fan base in America, calling for the GM and manager to be fired while they have the second best record in baseball.

It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.

  23. Jim May 12th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Awesome effort, guys. Really looked like you wanted to play today and swing the bats against a guy with a 7 ERA who has only recorded 1 quality start all year and has given up 5+ runs in each of his last 3 starts.

Great job. Wonder what the immortal Jimmy Bonderman and his 5 ERA will do to us tonight. It’s probably going to rain so our hitters will probably mail it in anyway like thye did this afternoon.

Only way to get revenge is to beat him. Tough loss, but gotta be very happy with Vasquez performance today, and a good outing from Logan as well. Lets get the split tonight.

  30. Craw May 12th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Vazquez DID stop the bleeding today. Unfortunately, the offense re-opened the wound.

Even if Hughes pitches a shutout tonight, it might not be enough. Though you would think a team with a $100 million infield could figure out a way to scratch one run off Bonderman. Then again, they couldn’t off Porcello whose ERA was 2 runs higher so I have my doubts.

  31. Dylan May 12th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Wow the Yankees offense has been dreadful in Detroit. I think the big stadium is really hurting them since the Yankees rely on the home run ball. Jeter’s struggles are also hurting this team. Its a lot harder to score runs when your leadoff hitter isn’t doing anything. I don’t think the Yankees hit any line drives today besides Jeter who got robbed. Btw, why is Pena getting a ton of playing time while Russo sits on the bench? Pena can’t hit at all. I also think the Yankees should have brought up Miranda instead of Golson, who probably won’t even get any playing time. Doesn’t make much sense to me. Anyway, no need to blow this thing out of performance. Its just one loss.

  32. Jim Mason May 12th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

How can nayone not be happy about Vazquez’s effort? You all ripped him to shreds all year now he pitches a good game and it’s not enough. The only thing wrong with this team is its 4th starter and he showed today he can do it.

  33. Brandon's Awesome (B/c my AWESOMENESS believes in tasing fans that jump fences) May 12th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Like I said … this is the first series of the season we lose right?

It came on May 12th. WOW lets jump off the bridge and slit our wrists :? ?

Javy pitched well, and the Tigers D made a huge difference in this game. You win some, you lose some, it happens.

  34. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 12th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

They aren’t executing offensively – not the big guys anyway – that just means they aren’t executing, not that they aren’t tough. It’s fine to be optimistic about the offense, but just like the SP need to pick up the team (and they have), the heavy lifters in the lineup are going to have to pick up the rest of the lineup. If they don’t, then the team is going to struggle to score runs.

  35. rocman May 12th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

  48. PC Dave May 12th, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Good thing tomorrow’s game is likely going to be rained out… I shudder to think about what Verlander would do to our offense. But we do face Lariano on Friday, which is probably an even tougher task than Verlander.

Can the next 2 days be rained out?

    Can Russo play LF?

  51. terpbomber May 12th, 2010 at 3:33 pm

The offense — or lack thereof — left a sour taste in my mouth far much so than Javy’s performance. That one minor bad inning seemed inexplicably insurmountable for them to overcome.

  52. Ken May 12th, 2010 at 3:33 pm

  62. Craw May 12th, 2010 at 3:35 pm

Girardi really overestimates the top/middle of the lineup if he thinks we can give away outs at the bottom.

  68. SJ44 May 12th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

    Trisha,

Most of the people who think the Yankees lack “toughness”, still haven’t gotten their adult teeth yet.

They are children with computer skills and nothing more.

    Its an absurd statement.

Unfortunately, these children lose their minds when the Yankees lose a game.

When their adult teeth grow in, and they gain some perspective, they will learn more about baseball.

The ONLY relevent story of the game for the Yankees is that Javy Vazquez FINALLY looked like the guy they got from Atlanta last year. He now has something to build on.

If he got blown out today, the same people not giving him credit for his performance today would be ripping him to shreds.

We have the dumbest fan base in baseball and they never disappoint after every loss.

Just the way it is. No big deal.

  69. Bronx Jeers May 12th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

  73. Cowboy May 12th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Bonderman had one outing where he gave up 10 runs in 4 innings and that inflated his ERA

He isin’t a bad pitcher at all… if the offense has the same approach tonight, they will do even less against him than they did against Porcello.

  74. Wave Your Hat May 12th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Porcello pitched great today. He would have beaten just about anyone.

Winn did not hurt us today. 2 walks and a hit, he’s decent enough against righties, Porcello actually looked like he was pitching around him to get to Pena.

I don’t know what it is about baseball, if there’s a weak link it always seems to get found out, today it was Pena. The Yanks really needed to be able to pinch hit for him and there was no obvious candidate on the bench.

Javy pitched really well, the one caveat to that being when runners reached base he was much less effective than when the bases were empty, which I think has been a problem previously for him.

  75. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 12th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

“I root for the Yankees not Javier, Yankees lost therefore I?m not happy..LOL”

You’re going to be uphappy quite a few more times this season. Or didn’t you get the memo saying the Yankees were going to lose some games this season?

I’m not unhappy in the least. B flippin D they lost the game. Javy Vazquez pitched a great game. Do you get it? (this is for anyone licking their wounds right now.) The Yankees have a fantastic record and one of the best they’ve had at this point in the season in forever.

Do any of you who are whining about the offense (again I am not reading all the posts so I don’t know who has said what but I have read some of the responses so I know things have been said) realize that sometimes a really good pitcher will come along, or a pitcher who has a really good outing? You ever play ball when it’s cold and damp, and the pitcher has a good game going? Did you hit out many homeruns?

Grow up. The Yankees are probably the most solid team in baseball. Thank your lucky stars they have the team they do. Injury after injury and they continue to come through series after series.

IMO some of you don’t deserve to root for this team. You should be penalized to have to root for teams that really have problems. Then maybe you’d come back and show that you know what perspective is.

Girardi really should rest Jeter in the 2nd game, but he will probably be the DH. He looks really bad and old. Today he hit the ball hard in 1 at bat but otherwise he is such an easy out. The patience has to be better with him and everyone else in the lienup.

  78. Jerkface May 12th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

Nino has gotten clutch hits and his defense/speed is worlds better than Russo.

    You mean clutch HIT?

    Risp: .091 .083 .091 .174 (1 hit in 13 PA)

    Men on: .067 .063 .067 .129

    Bases empty: .375 .444 .500 .944

    On third less than 2 outs: .000 .000 .000 .000 (in 4 tries)

    Total before today: .174 .200 .217 .417

These numbers will be worse now.

  79. m-sending out an S.o.S. May 12th, 2010 at 3:39 pm

We don’t really have much choice at the bottom of the lineup with NJ & CG out.

The Yankees have been lucky the bottom was producing for much of the young season so far.

I have lots of faith in the core guys, but it would be nice if they didn’t slump at the same time. :)

Hopefully, Phil does his thing and the bats wake up for the nightcap.

  80. Pags&Rags May 12th, 2010 at 3:39 pm

Can’t blame Javy for this one. Looks like Yankees weren’t too interested in playing a day game today. Also guess it’s time for a mini swoon here. Hope they can right ship tonight behind Hughes. I’d hate to lose 3 out of 4 to Detroit or even get swept by them if we lose the next two.

  85. Vegas Yank May 12th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

This team is an older team…. they don’t perform well when it is raining or cold or when they don’t get enough sleep.

Kay made excuses for them in that Baltimore game that they were exhausted and only got in at 4 in the morning, and then yesterday he made that same excuse that they got in from Boston at 5 AM.

It has to be perfect conditions for the hitters to hit. Do you really think they want to be out there in this dreary weather? That is one of the key reasons we need to get younger – younger players can perform when the conditions are not ideal. They don’t need sleep or sunshine to perform.

  86. Bob(the original) May 12th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

The weather for tomorrow looks pretty hopeless for a game. That is not a bad thing at this point. They can skip Mitre, and Girardi knowing about tomorrow, may not feel inclined to rest anyone. I could skip a game watching Pena come up in critical situations. Maybe Winn is starting to come around. They do need someone to step up with Granderson out and a number of players not hitting.

    Jerkface,

Jeter does need to get a little more patient at the plate, but he has hit at least 4 balls that looked like hits, 2 of them xtra base hits, in these two games. So, he is swinging well, maybe just too early and too often.

That said, it is at least a little troubling that he has had an inordinate amount of 1 and 2 pitch at-bats this year. It is almost as if he and Robbie have exchanged their “patience gene”, if there is such a thing. :)

    CB-

Ground balls, some of which were just in the wrong place, others of which were real hits. Plus he pitched behind in the count often when runners were on base.

Today’s difference was he hung in there with men on and got the outs when he needed them. Plus, he was very economical with his pitches and when no one was on was masterful.

All in all a very encouraging performance.

I agree – we need to see more from Vazquez. He unraveled with the bases loaded, yet was flawless with the bases empty. We’ve seen this in his previous starts as well. He would cruise early on and once the opposing team got a couple on base, he would melt down and give up multiple runs.

He needs to improve his ability to bare down. His start looks good, stats-wise, but the same troubling signs continued today. He only got into trouble in 1 inning, but he couldn’t stop the damage in that inning.

It’s not where you start but where you finish ….look how we started last year and where we finished. We have only played 12 games at home, had injuries, our big guys aren’t even at full swing and we still have the 2nd best record in all of

Stop the whining after the loses and support the team. Sometimes Yankee fans just make

  155. Dylan May 12th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Btw, I’m also confused why Girardi bats Jeter #1 and Gardner #2 instead of the other way around. Jeter seems to have lost his speed. If Gardner were to get on leading off the game, it would basically be an automatic run if you consider his base stealing ability and Jeter’s bunting skills. It made sense batting Damon #2 last year because he had a lot of power. I don’t really understand batting Gardner #2 though.

  158. GeorgeInJax May 12th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

    Gardner batting 2nd

With Winn being such a weak bat, I don’t think they want Winn & Gardner batting back to back.
Although BG has handled the bat well & I believe he will be a good everyday player.
I don’t think much of Winn. I was baffled when they acquired him. Winn may have MLB experience, but at this stage in his career any of our AAA outfielders can bat as well as Winn.

  159. JK May 12th, 2010 at 4:13 pm

    RMS,

This is probably their most difficult part of their schedule for 2010 and they are 10 games above .500 and going home for a homestand. If you would have asked me at the beginning of the season if I would take 21-11 for the Yankees after 32 games I would have said yes & thought it was a great deal.

Relax, things are going to get better.

I hate when the yanks put up 10 runs in back to back games….There bats always seem to go cold after they score that many. Jeter is our lead off man.
