Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on May 14, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Sorry for the brief delay. I checked in with Curtis Granderson before posting the lineup. He’s been getting regular treatment and feels good, but he hasn’t run or swing a bat since the injury.

Here’s the lineup.

Derek Jeter SS
Brett Gardner CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Marcus Thames LF
Juan Miranda DH
Francisco Cervelli C

A.J. Burnett RHP

    Interesting…no Posada tonight.

  2. Warning Track Power May 14th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

    That is a winning line-up!

  3. Erin May 14th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

    That’s good Granderson’s feeling better! :)

  4. blake May 14th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Thames in LF…cue hysteria….I must admit, I don’t like seeing him in the outfield.

  5. Mike May 14th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Cervelli’s had a nice start, but we’re not winning a world series without posada. this is getting ridiculous.

  6. blake May 14th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Glad to see Swisher back in there.

  7. antisocial scrooge May 14th, 2010 at 3:51 pm

not exactly murderer’s row, but it will do!

  8. CRAWDADDY (Boycott ESPN-NY) May 14th, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Is it so hard to believe that Posada will sit a night game before playing a day game tomorrow with Pettitte starting that game?

  9. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 14th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

    Thames in LF……

  10. Erin May 14th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

For everyone complaining about Posada not being in the lineup-if he had played tonight, he couldn’t play tomorrow, and I’m sure Girardi wants him catching Andy.

  11. Erin May 14th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

“For everyone complaining about Posada not being in the lineup-if he had played tonight, he couldn’t play tomorrow, and I’m sure Girardi wants him catching Andy.”

Which shouldn’t be an issue because this isnn’t something new.

  14. Patrick May 14th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

It makes sense to a lot of people just not you.

    A lot of stupid people.

  15. Nick in SF in Petaluma May 14th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Gardenhire agreed to sit Mauer if Girardi promised to sit Winn Posada.

  16. Joe from Long Island May 14th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

I’m a little surprised that Thames is getting the start and not Winn, against the righty.

  17. pat May 14th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

“Is it so hard to believe that Posada will sit a night game before playing a day game tomorrow with Pettitte starting that game?”

No snow!!! It’s a little too chilly to have the windows open, but the sun has been making random appearances. At least it’s not raining.

  19. JAWN Sterling May 14th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

You take a look at that lineup and what does it tell you? You can’t figure baseball! If anyone can explain this game, give them my number.

  20. Joe from Long Island May 14th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Posada will play both Sat and Sun.

  21. Steve May 14th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Even if Thames gets lucky enough to survive the regular season, he’ll never be put on any postseason roster.

  22. Rich in NJ May 14th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

I loathe seeing Thames in the OF, especially since Winn has been last bad lately.

  23. Rich in NJ May 14th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

    LESS bad

  24. Jobamania May 14th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

liriano is the pitcher tomorrow, why start thames today? his defense is BRUTAL

i guess it has to do with his career numbers vs baker which are pretty good

  25. m-sending out an S.o.S. May 14th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Wait, Pettitte doesn’t like Cervelli? :P

    repost:

What did the Cavs owner say at his presser? That we’re staying with Brown, but the evaluations are still on-going? Did he really call a PC to say we’re not firing Brown (today) and that “we feel we’re definitely in the LeBron sweepstakes”?

I read some recaps of dan patrick’s show today. the SI nba guy thomsen was going off the deep end. Said if LeBron doesn’t win multiple championships he’ll be the biggest bust in history. Charles Barkley multiplied. :?

The more I think about it, LeBron’s going to choose the option that gives him the best chance to win a championship. He’s going to need to find a team that has or will give him 2 other elite players + good role players. Not sure he’s going to get that in Cleveland. And you can’t paint it any other way, it will take a couple of years to assemble such a team in New York. And I can’t see him leaving Cleveland for another small market. NY, Chicago, miami might be the best bets. NY & miami have aggressive ownership/management.

If LeBron and Wade think they can rule the world, that might be LeBron’s best chance.

  26. comet May 14th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Joe I’m really surprised Winn gives you defence and the bats are about equal. I’d even start Golson, if he is still with the team. It was great to him get his first major league hit the other. BTW I agree the Yankee announcers are anything but perfect but when you hear what everyone else offers radio or TV the Yankees come out on top.

  27. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 14th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Why is Winn even on this team ? Perhaps Cash signed him against Joe’s will, lol………

  28. LGY May 14th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

I posted this in the last thread and I am not saying I necessarily buy it, but I can bet this is why Girardi went with Thames over Winn:

Thames vs. Baker: 8-26 (.308) and 4 of those 8 are HR.

  29. Pat M. May 14th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Once again Giradi going with speed in the 2 hole……..Nick in SF, I have the Senators ? Nationals at $ 205.00 …..Run line + 2.5 for $ 750.00 ……Rolling the dice tonight……..GB, The Orville Moody story is classic and deserves to be shared until requested otherwise……I pick & choose when to make that reference…….Tin Cup is far looser than I am about it……It’s his neutralizer

  30. RS May 14th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Thames will probably be the DH tomorrow against the lefty

  31. Rich in NJ May 14th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

“i guess it has to do with his career numbers vs baker which are pretty good”

    It’s only 26 AB.

  32. upstate kate May 14th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

    Rich in NJ
less bad, I like that :)

  33. LGY May 14th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

    Pat,

You could twist it and say Girardi going with OBP in the 2 hole b/c Gardner is at .411

  34. Patrick May 14th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

LGY, That’s exactly why Girardi put Thames in the lineup but it’s very faulty logic on Girardi’s part. Dumb dumb dumb

  35. m-sending out an S.o.S. May 14th, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Swisher or Gardner in the two hole is fine. When Granderson comes back, I’d put Swisher in the 2-spot and put Gardner at the bottom of the lineup.

I’m not counting on a fully recovered NJ at this point. Wrists are a tricky deal.

  36. LGY May 14th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

If Joe sat Posada tomorrow vs Liriano who has been one of the best pitchers in the AL so far this season people would call him dumb for playing him the night before.

  37. Pat M. May 14th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

The hope is that Thames will supply the missing pop due to Posada’s day off…….Jorge is available later for a PH role…….Not a bad lineup considering the situations

  38. Erin May 14th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

LoHudYankees Injured pitching prospect Christian Garcia has been released by the Yankees

  39. blake May 14th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Granderson really makes the lineup much deeper. They have missed him these past couple weeks.

  40. Patrick May 14th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

LoHudYankees Injured pitching prospect Christian Garcia has been released by the Yankees

    —-

Ouch… that’s too bad for Garcia. He just couldn’t stay healthy ;(

  41. upstate kate May 14th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

if 1-6 play the way we know they can, 7,8,9 will be fine.

  42. Largo May 14th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

“LoHudYankees Injured pitching prospect Christian Garcia has been released by the Yankees”

That clears a spot on the 40 man roster. Is there another move coming?

  43. RS May 14th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

I still wish Girardi would try Gardner at leadoff. He’s getting on base at a much higher rate than Jeter and has lightening speed. Jeter is a good situational hitter and has batted second before, so it’s not like it would be a demotion for him.

  44. Nick in SF in Petaluma May 14th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Pat M, very agressive pounding of that favorable line, I’m impressed. Hopefully the Nats’ bats were not stored in the humidor overnight.

  45. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 14th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Pat M, I really think Winn should be playing; I’m surprised that Joe seems not to be bothered by Thames butchering simple OF plays. He makes pitchers work harder and costs the team runs……

  46. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 14th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

We definitely miss Granderson, but it doesn’t sound like he will be back anytime soon.

  47. LGY May 14th, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Thames has certainly been bad in left so far this season and he is definitely not a good LF.

But, he is not going to continually cost the Yankees runs in the OF everytime he is out there. With Hughes on the mound the other day he only made 1 play the entire game.

Also, remember that some of his biggest misplays have come in games where our pitcher was already getting rocked. Javy in Tampa and AJ in Fenway. The ball was hit out to him an unusually high amount of times in those games. And, he was not going to be the difference in those games anyway.

If the pitcher makes his pitches like Hughes did the other night, his defensive impact is minimized. And if the pitcher is not making his pitches it won’t make much of a difference anyway.

  48. Erin May 14th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

LoHudYankees Posada out of the lineup because he’s caught two days in a row and Girardi didn’t want to catch him three straight.

  49. SJ44 May 14th, 2010 at 4:13 pm

26 AB’s is a fair amount of AB’s against one pitcher. That’s why Girardi is going with Thames in LF and is hoping his D doesn’t cost them.

Andy loves throwing to Posada, hence Cervelli tonight. If Posada caught tonight, he wouldn’t catch him in a day game after night game tomorrow.

He wants Miranda to DH against righties so, Winn sits rather than have Thames as the DH.

  50. pat May 14th, 2010 at 4:13 pm

    Yankees history against Baker

  51. Joe from Long Island May 14th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

LGY – yeah, that might have something to do with it.

I thought that Garcia’s recovering from surgery, and they released him? I guess that’s the difference between a minor league contract and a major league one.

That kid has had nothing but bad luck since he started out. If this story is true, I can only guess the disappointment.

  52. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 14th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

LGY, but you don’t know that those plays didn’t make a difference early in the game; we don’t know that things would have played out the same if Thames makes those plays. Let’s say Phil made a great pitch and one of the Tigers had lifted a shallow FB to LF with runners on; if he messes that up, those runs score. It didn’t mean Phil didn’t job because he had the bad luck to give up a FB to an awful OF.

  53. pat May 14th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

LoHudYankees Yankees Christian Garcia released to open roster spot for RHP Shane Lindsay, waiver claim from Rockies.

  54. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 14th, 2010 at 4:17 pm

SJ, I completely understand the Po thing now, but if this is going to be a regular occurrence with Thames in LF, then that’s going to make things very hairy for Yankee pitchers.

Too bad about Garcia, but he’s awfully fragile; I already predict come Yankee fans will be up in arms about this, but I can’t blame the Yankees.

  55. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) May 14th, 2010 at 4:17 pm

    Shane Lindsay?

  56. Phil the Thrill May 14th, 2010 at 4:17 pm

Sad to see Garcia gone. He had a ton of talent. So, Phil Hughes is pretty much all that’s left of the `04 draft. And guess what? That still makes it a great draft.

  57. RayVT May 14th, 2010 at 4:19 pm

If Garcia doesn’t get claimed he can still be retained by the Yankees right???

  58. I am a Fat Walrus May 14th, 2010 at 4:19 pm

Well that explains why Thames is in the lineup… great link pat.

  59. Phil the Thrill May 14th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

What do we want a stumpy Aussie pitcher for?

  60. Wave Your Hat May 14th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

“Not a bad lineup considering the situations”

Yes, considering the situation is Granderson and NJ out, Jeter in a bad slump, ARod’s power gone south, Cano coming back down to earth, and our bench pretty weak. Gardner, Tex and Swish need to bring it tonight.

  61. RS May 14th, 2010 at 4:21 pm

So I get why Posada isn’t catching, but why can’t he DH?

  62. Z'ing is believing May 14th, 2010 at 4:21 pm

So Posada isn’t out because of some long-held grudge from the late-’90s?

I thought maybe that troll from this morning was onto something.

  63. CB May 14th, 2010 at 4:24 pm

I think there’s a good chance that the Yanks will resign Garcia.

They made the move because they couldn’t afford to keep a 40 man roster slot occupied with Garcia.

Better to make the move now rather than later on when he’s further along in his recovery.

It’s in Garcia’s best interest to resing with the yanks given how patient they’ve been with him and how well they know him. I’d guess they discussed this with him prior. Shane Lindsay is most likely just a secondary issue.

They did this same thing of releasing and then resigning Sanchez to clear a 40 man roster spot as well, IIRC.

  64. Z'ing is believing May 14th, 2010 at 4:24 pm

    Oh, and the Malachi brothers.

I hated those guys and their ‘Malachi Crunch’!

  65. RayVT May 14th, 2010 at 4:28 pm

    Saw this from 2006

This Rockies prospect might be the best young baseball pitcher you haven’t heard about. The Australian righthander has struck out 198 batters in 130 innings in the lower minor leagues over the past two years. Lindsay’s repertoire includes a sharp curveball and a 97 mph fastball, so there’s little question that he can succeed at higher levels of competition if two important developments occur. First, he needs to refine his control. Second, he just needs to stay healthy. Lindsay only pitched 66 innings last year and spent much of this season recovering from a partially torn rotator cuff in extended Spring Training. He will pitch for Waikiki this month.

  66. everything is fine May 14th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

    This just in:

Big Barking Dog Blowhard SJ44 has finished sharpening his claws and fake teeth and is back in the house after also having just being on the phone with Girardi therefore he knows exactly the manager’s thinking as usual.

Oh how lucky are we all to always have the inside scoop on everything Yankees!

Thanks Sir, we would all be so lost without you!

    Pffffffffffff …..

  67. SJ44 May 14th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

Glad to see I could educate you and you have another new name on here! Well played.

  68. joelh May 14th, 2010 at 4:37 pm

I would prefer Miranda and Thames switched up on the lineup (then again that might be cuban bias :D ), but that’s a minor thing.

This should be a pretty good game tonight! Enjoy it!! :)

  69. Yankee22 May 14th, 2010 at 4:50 pm

I’m so tired of thames he’s one lf the worst defenders I’ve ever seen he doesn’t do anything for this team but winns even worse hitting so were stuck. Reed Johnson would be great to have about right now

  70. Tyler May 14th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Anybody know anything about the upside of Zolio Almonte down in Charleston? Seems to be putting up some decent numbers this year. Always liked him when he was playing down in the GCL

  71. Tyler May 14th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

    Betsy,

If you go to milb.com, they have a nice profile on Lindsay. Was once the number 1 prospect in his minor league league and was a highly rated prospect in the Rockies system. Seems to have some injury problems and hasn’t been too sharp this year with a 6 ERA and almost a 1:1 K to BB ratio. Had a 1.89 ERA with a107 K’s to just 34 BB in 2005 and even last year was effective with a sub 3 ERA. I’m intrigued by this move. Major upside here.
