Rays designate Pat Burrell

Orioles Rays Baseball

The Tampa Bay Rays are putting up a fight in the American League East, and this afternoon they cut bait on a bad free agent signing.

Pat Burrell was designated for assignment to open a roster spot for veteran Hank Blalock to be called up from Triple-A Durham. Burrell was hitting just .202 with two home runs, this after hitting .221 with 14 homers last year.

The Rays signed Burrell last season and he’s owed $9 million this year. It’s hard to imagine anyone claiming him and that salary off waivers.

In Blalock, the Rays had an experience backup waiting for a call-up. Blalock was hitting .349 with four home runs in Triple-A, and he has a solid big league track record that includes 25 home runs last year with Texas.

With the Red Sox fighting to stay above .500, the more interesting two-game series next week might not be the Monday and Tuesday games against Boston, it might be the Wednesday and Thursday games against the Rays.

I think both series will be interesting, but it’s still the middle of May.

  2. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 9:07 pm

That will make the Rays even more dangerous…………

It’s too early for scoreboard watching, but the Sox are playing very well now; this may not be a two team race.

    Boesch is pretty good

I think I may have brought the Tigers luck since I turned the game on a few minutes ago and Lester started to give it up. I would really like to think I somehow helped.

    :)

The Sux don’t have a shot of being in the race. Period. They’re just not that good.

Here’s a very interesting stat. I was looking at the scores of today’s games and noticed that the Orioles are leading Cleveland 2-0, compliments of Ty Wiggington (who I have on my fantasy team, thank you.) So I went to see who started for the O’s and it was Brian Matusz. What really caught my eye was the stats on Alfredo Simon. If you remember they brought him up at the end of April to face the Yankees after their weekend in beantown when they could have swept the series but the bullpen kept giving it away. Well since Simon has been brought up, he has pitched 8 innings, has 9 Ks, 5 saves, and a 0.00 ERA. And his saves came against the Yankees, the Sux, Minny, and Seattle. (2 very good teams in there.)

Jonathan Broxton, who has been with the Dodgers all season, currently has 5 saves.

And the Orioles have a three-game winning streak.

    I like that.

  5. Chuck58 May 15th, 2010 at 9:33 pm

Remember, Pat the Bat’s Nine Mil counts against the Rays.
Any team picking him up just pays the prorated minimum.
Even so, might be slim pickin’s….

Something makes me think big fatso has found the milkshakes again.

  7. antisocial scrooge May 15th, 2010 at 9:36 pm

& just like that alfredo simon blows the save.

  8. Vic May 15th, 2010 at 9:38 pm

And who do the Tigers have to beat tomorrow to avoid the sweep? Lackey.

That is why the Sox will hang around – pitching. Their offensive woes have been very overstated as well. They are not as good as us, but they are still a very good team.

  9. Mongo May 15th, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Grind it out game for Lester – 7 IP but preserved the lead and battled. Thank god we don’t have to face him at the stadium, he is good.

  10. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 15th, 2010 at 9:40 pm

I guess I have to revise my stats on Alfredo Simon. Before tonight he had an ERA of 0.00. And 5 saves. And no blown saves.

Depending on what happens at the bottom of the inning he still might have no blown saves…

  11. Carl May 15th, 2010 at 9:40 pm

    way to go Trisha!

  12. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 15th, 2010 at 9:46 pm

“That is why the Sox will hang around ? pitching. Their offensive woes have been very overstated as well. They are not as good as us, but they are still a very good team.”

I disagree. They are the antithesis of a very good team. Their pitching is ranked 24th in the majors.

  13. Pat M. May 15th, 2010 at 9:49 pm

I don’t want to sound overly repetitive, but The Boston Red Sox are not going away folks…….If they find a solution to their DH issue or acquire another stick they’re going to be hanging around…..In fact they have a rotation that can easily go through 2 spins without losing……They do have issues for certain, but do not fall into a denial state of mind…….

  14. Patrick May 15th, 2010 at 9:50 pm

Chuck, if a team picks burrell up off waivers they pay his full salary. If he goes through waivers and doesn’t accept assignment to AAA (likely) then a team can sign him for the minimum.

I could see the mariners, white sox, red sox and giants being interested in him.

  15. RMS May 15th, 2010 at 9:50 pm

Much too early to write the RS off.

  16. Patrick May 15th, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Yeah Pat m is right, the sox will contend this year

  17. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 15th, 2010 at 9:52 pm

And both the Orioles AND the Jays are ranked ahead of the Sux in team pitching.

  18. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 15th, 2010 at 9:56 pm

    :D

As much as I respect Pat M’s baseball savvy, only the Pope is infallible.

The Sux will NOT contend. I haven’t called it wrong about them yet. Last season there were a core of posters who could not stop talking about how good and how dangerous the Sux were. I knew they weren’t going to get the job done, and they didn’t.

I’ll be surprised if they come in above 4th. They definitely will not get beyond third. That, friends, is not contending – at least that’s not my definition of contending.

  19. Todd May 15th, 2010 at 9:57 pm

Sox get Berkman, they immediately overtake the Rays

  21. Pat M. May 15th, 2010 at 10:00 pm

Mark Texeria has improved his BA to .217, however he has a remarkable 28 rbi’s………Tricia, I hope you’re right come September……….If somehow they come into The Stadium and were to take 2 games, they’re only 3 back in the all important loss column…..

  22. adrian May 15th, 2010 at 10:01 pm

Ken Griffey Jnr for the DH spot anyone?

  23. SAS May 15th, 2010 at 10:02 pm

    Trisha,

I hope you are right about the Sox, but I can’t count them out just yet. They could go on a roll and the Yankees and Rays could go through a bad down time. Certainly, we have seen that happen to the Yankees a number of times…like last year. It is too early for me to say that are out of if.

  36. MTU(aka GBURL) May 15th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

    Betsy-

I’m paying it forward for Phil. Below is my 1st installment. The peak I climbed is over 7k but I didn’t have my GPS with me to get an exact elevation.

Therefore I will round it off to 7K even though it is more. This will cover Phil’s wins thru # 8.

  37. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 15th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

SAS I totally respect your right to see it that way, as well as anyone’s right to believe that could happen.

I on the other hand know that to make a run you need the players. They don’t have them. It’s really that simple.

The Tigers have tied the score after having been down 6-0 in the 7th!

    *******************
Todd I think it’s going to take more than Berkman for the Sux to overtake the Rays. The Rays have the best pitching in the AL. The Sux are a team in flux. To show you how shaky their offense really is, all it took was Ellsbury going down for the team to go into a tailspin – Cameron also but that was more about defense. They are really missing Jason Bay.

  42. SAS May 15th, 2010 at 10:17 pm

    Trisha,

If you said the Sox were out of it in August, that would be one thing. By the way, I want you to be right.

  43. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 15th, 2010 at 10:18 pm

“But seriously, I?ll call the Sox dead when they?re actually dead and that doesn?t happen in May.”

Of course. It’s fair for people to wait until a time they consider reasonable. Most people I would think would consider mid September a good time to make as*essments.

I am going with that team as presently constituted, though they would really have to bring in some stars for things to change.

I’m willing to predict that come mid September, the Sux as presently constituted will not be a team in contention.

  44. Paul May 15th, 2010 at 10:18 pm

Tito sure has faith that Valverde is going to blow it if he goes to Papelbon tie game in the 8th,

  45. CR9 May 15th, 2010 at 10:19 pm

Thanks Trisha for giving them the bad vibes. I went to sleep, to go out later tonight! Just woke up, what does Paul mean, “cant get a sac fly”

Did they have a chance to take a lead?

  46. Dave D. May 15th, 2010 at 10:19 pm

And Leyland leaves in Phil Coke!!!! If that had been us in a tie game, he would have gone straight to Valverde or Zumaya

  47. Soul May 15th, 2010 at 10:22 pm

    CR9,

Tigers had 2nd and 3rd, no outs against Okijima in a tie game and came away with nothing.

Laird (the same guy who had those key RBIs off CC) struck out
    Sizemore lined out
    Everett grounded out

sickening. And now they leave in Phil Coke who will definitely blow it rather than going to a better reliever.

  52. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 15th, 2010 at 10:26 pm

SAS, I always make early predictions about the Sux. I watch them a lot more than the average bear (so to speak) because they live in my back yard – or I in their’s. :) I’m also pretty brave when it comes to making predictions. I said the Yanks would take #27 from the beginning of last season and never moved away from that, no matter how many games in a row the Yanks lost. I am looking at the Sux and seriously have to say this is the least impressive one of their teams I have seen in a very long time.

Sure anything can happen. I just don’t see them getting off the mat. And the longer they are without Ellsbury, the harder it gets for them to get a real head of steam and sustain it.

  53. Uncle Ellsworth (5 with 15+) May 15th, 2010 at 10:26 pm

Boy, people are sure stressing out about the Red Sox………and I get accused of worrying?

    MTU, gorgeous photos…….gorgeous.

Just the same way we didn’t want people to give up on the Yankees last year because it was early, well – the Sox deserve the same respect. I expect Beckett to find himself; Lester is great and Buchholz/Lackey are very good. Are they as good as the Yankees and Rays? Probably not, but I seriously do not get the knocks about their offense – they score and they score a lot. Whether or not the schedule has been kind to them, they’ve taken advantage of it. Again, that said, it’s way too early to scoreboard watch and to freak out every time they win a game

I gave it that name because it is that presence I sometimes feel when I go to these places, and because it is only such a hand that could have created this kind of beauty.

It is my fortunate priviledge to be allowed to experience it all. I love sharing it with others

  81. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Ray, wow – I’ve never done that; good for you!

I agree, it’s way too early to rule any team out – whether it’s the Sox or anyone, but especially the Sox with their pitching.

  82. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 15th, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Pat M, no matter how close they come (not that I am thinking they will come close) I don’t believe they have the horses to sustain it. Ellsbury returning is going to be a wild card. I never realized his importance to that team as a play maker until he went down. From what I hear it’s not really close (his return).

I am now going to pick up Bosch for my fantasy team.

I appreciate the kind words, and right back at you! Why couldnt there be more Sox fans with your class?!

I have a question, did you grow up in Mass/Boston, or did you grow up somewhere else as a fan of them?

  87. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 15th, 2010 at 10:52 pm

Betsy the rivalry has been alive longer than we have. It is what it is. I actually find it a lot of fun since I’m really good to go with our Yankees. I’m convinced they are going to take #28, as you know, so I don’t get any highs or lows on a daily basis, nor do I worry about the Yankees. So to help me get through the season while I am waiting for the Yankees to prevail in the postseason, I find other things to amuse me. Watching and rooting against the Sux is prime amongst them.

Obviously Yankee fans take interest in the rivalry. That’s no big surprise.

And yes, I love men and women that are tanned. But I am not averse to pasty ladies!

The Sox lineup is very weak. Even with all of our injuries, the Yankees still have a stronger lineup than them. The only guy who really scares me is Youk. Martinez is decent and Pedroia is pretty good, but they don’t really strike fear into opposing pitchers. The lineup is pretty top heavy. Bay was a big loss. The pitching staff was supposed to carry the team this year but Beckett and Dice-K have been awful. Those guys are going to need to turn it around and the Sox are going to need to add another big bat (Adrian Gonzalez?) if they want to keep up with the Yanks and Rays.

The 2007 Superbowl will be unrivaled in NY sports history

    Just so many storylines

The Pats were supposed to be the beat team of all-time. They beat everyone by like 30 points all year. They set records, they were 18-0. They laughed at Plaxico who predicted only 17 points. Seymore was trash talking Toomer the whole game, inviting him to their after party. And as much as I hate them, Brady and Belichick are one of the immortal coaching/QB tandems of all-time.

And the Giants scored 14 points against them in the 4th. Manning to Buress with 35 seconds left. Alford sacking Brady on 3rd down with a few seconds left. Bellichick walking off the field before the game was over.

Such a sweet memory. You could not script a better result in any sport.

How umpires can potentially change the outcome of games, and potentially the outcome of seasons. Just one example.

Oh well. Now that Philly got rid of their cancer, McNabb, Philly Flyers tried against the Boston team.

Thankfully, the 2008 Phillies didnt face the Red Sox in a World Series. That would have ended in a clean 4 game Red Sox sweep.

But now that the cancer of PHilly is gone, Philly will start playing against Boston!

The 86 Giants were a super exciting team. Something like the 98 Yankees were. There are certain teams that just seem to find lightening in a bottle. I think the 2009 Yankees were a terrific group also, but their pitching staff was compromised and had they not had all those days off, I am not certain they make it as easily.

  131. Starks May 15th, 2010 at 11:30 pm

Wide right was just incredible. What a whirlwind of emotions. From rejection and sorrow to bewilderment and pandemonium in a matter of seconds

2007 was unbelievable to. We beat what folks were saying was the greatest team of all time, the greatest head coach, the greatest QB, the greatest offense, the best defensive mind of all time. I still can’t believe we beat that good a team. They were undefeated and were going for history!

I know I told this story before but the Yankees also factored into the breakup of my relationship. My ex didn’t share my Yankee love and acted like a jealous lover. I think the real beginning of the end (though it did take quite a while after that to happen) came one night when he was out of town on business and we were fighting about something. I kept trying to get him off the phone because it was the night that Clemens was facing Pedro at the Stadium. I told him that I would talk to him after the game but he wanted to continue the fight and kept calling back. I was finally forced to take the phone off the hook so I could enjoy the game. Boy was he mad!!! It took a long time for him to get past that – if he ever did.

The 2007 run was by far the greatest.

I was sick the entire 2 weeks leading up to the game.

I didnt believe in the Giants until after the victory over the Cowboys. At that point, I pleaded with the football gods for a Giants-Patriots matchup, so NY could steal perfection away from them the way 2004 was stolen away from us.

I knew that we would win the game. Because Im not sure I would have survived a loss in that game. I know it sounds overdramatic, and I dont mean I would have committed suicide or anything like that. But I dont see how I ever could have woken up again.

“LAA vs Oak 12-3 top of ninth, Chad Gaudin gave up 6 of those 12 runs to LAA.”

Looks like the Yanks knew what they were doing when they kept Mitre over Gaudin.

So will Tito make Lackey take one for the team tomorrow?

I don’t think he wants to burn his pen with Dice-K against the Yanks looming (and Beckett coming off extended rest following him).

  183. jz May 16th, 2010 at 12:10 am

Seriously, I think the entire Angels organization has no guts to face Sox in every game.
    I root against Angels forever.

    btw, Sux 6, Tigers 7.

But CR-9, he is the pitcher who walked in the winning run. He’s the pitcher who had to take the long walk from the mound to the dugout while the Tigers players went crazy celebrating on the field. And he’s the one who has to walk into the clubhouse and feel the immediate guilt of having been the one to give up the game. I just feel sad for him because he is just a bit player and was put into a bad situation not of his making.

Anyway, I wanted that to happen to Papelsmear! I would have been ecstatic if the same thing happened to him!

Bingo, thanks for having faith in me! I try.

The Red Sox should have won that. 6-1 lead for their ace? And they blow it? A shameful team

    Tigers 1.5 behind Twins.

Papelbon was used for 2.1 innings today. Only 26 pitches though.

Very unconventional BP use today – Fracona brings in Papelbon with 2 outs, 2 on in the 8th. But he let Okijima blow the lead, have 2nd/3rd no outs, and waited till Okijima got the 2 outs before bringing in Papelbon to face Adam Everett LOL. Why couldn’t Okijima just stay in to get him out?

Then he uses him for 2 innings.

Tigers don’t go to Valverde till the 12th inning.

    jerkface

but didn’t it feel good watching them fight for their playoff lives?

  191. Jerkface May 16th, 2010 at 12:20 am

I laughed heartily at Ramirez smirking at his ridiculous strike 1 call, then getting hosed for ball 4, then losing the zone completely.

    Nice reference, Nick

Twins have not won in NY since July 4th, 2007 when Johan Santana beat Mike Mussina.

The 120 million dolar baby Holliday, is making Cardinal fans feel remorseful. I teased them with Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware) all hot stove!

Can I get a score/situation update? i’ve got no access to the game except through you people

    ———————————-

Henceforth, you shall be called Blumpkin.

How is that for an update?

  200. sevrox May 16th, 2010 at 8:11 am

If I were Vazquez, I’d be relatively p.o.’d that I was being skipped another start. Man won’t be able to get any rhythm or groove going, especially after a positive start like his last.

    Mistake in personnel management.

Yanks will be fine but if they want him on track, this ain’t the way to do it.

  201. 7789 May 16th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Damn the yanks should of been out of the 8th I guess Teix just didn’t see it.
