Yankees Angels Baseball

The Yankees have announced their rotation for the next week, with Javier Vazquez once again having his turn skipped, this time leaving the Yankees top four pitchers to face the Red Sox and Rays. Vazquez will make his next start in the series opener against the Mets.

Sunday: Sergio Mitre vs. Twins
Monday: Phil Hughes vs. Red Sox
Tuesday: CC Sabathia vs. Red Sox
Wednesday: A.J. Burnett vs. Rays
Thursday: Andy Pettitte vs. Rays
Friday: Javier Vazquez at Mets

“Our guys have been throwing great and we believe we’re getting Javy back to where he needs to be,” Joe Girardi said. “Javy was supposed to start tomorrow. We got in a little bit of a pickle because of rain and things we had to go through, so Serge has to make that start now. And we’re just going to move Javy to Friday.”

I think Phil Hughes has deserved it.

  2. Seymore May 15th, 2010 at 5:23 pm

CC loves to hit… I want to see him take Johan’s 89 MPH fastball off the Coca Cola sign ;)

    Don’t look now, but……
Yanks just signed Tim Redding, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
He lasted one inning for us back in 2005, if I remember correctly,
getting just immolated by the Sox. It’s a MiLB deal….

  4. Bryan May 15th, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Total right move… Javy would cry under the pressure of being at home against the Sux

Let him face the Mutts in that ocean of a ballpark

wasnt this confirmed 3 days ago?

  6. GreenBeret7 May 15th, 2010 at 5:28 pm

Redding’s only in the system to fill out the Scranton roster.

  7. SJ44 May 15th, 2010 at 5:28 pm

Absolutely the correct way to set up the rotation for the week.

  8. Chuck58 May 15th, 2010 at 5:29 pm

    Figured that was the case.
3 days? Could be; 1st I had heard about it.

  9. Giuseppe Franco May 15th, 2010 at 5:31 pm

Whether it’s the right way or wrong way to setup the rotation, Girardi sure isn’t showing a whole lot of faith in Vazquez.

That can’t be good for the rest of the season.

This isn’t a game, it’s real life MLB. Javy has to earn the right to pitch in the top 4 of the rotation. Right now he is the #5 starter and will be treated as such. Skipping him to put your best 4 against the top 2 teams in your division is absolutely the right move.
Unless there is an injury Javy will be pitching as the #5 the rest of the year and for a spot on the post season roster.
He will have to get over that and he is pitching for his future salary in MLB which won’t be with us.

  11. Gil May 15th, 2010 at 5:36 pm

    Franco,

I don’t think it is a lack of faith in Vazquez, just a lack of faith in his ability against the Red Sox, which is understandable.

It is much better to hide him in cavernous Citi Field against the .500 Mets rather than on ESPN against the Sox at the stadium.

  12. countryclub May 15th, 2010 at 5:36 pm

This is all about not wanting Pettitte to have to swing a bat. Right move.

  13. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 5:40 pm

At first, I really wanted Phil to pitch on Tuesday – for the possible Santana matchup, yes, but also because I didn’t like the idea of trying to skip Javy against the Sox. However, I have to agree that you want your best pitchers facing the best teams – and now they are.

  14. Bret the Hitman May 15th, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Johnny Damon is on pace for 9 HR’s and 9 SB’s.

That being said, the NJ signing was a waste of money. The guy has a steel rod in his leg. He probably gets a wifii signal.

I’m glad Cervelli now has a chance to be more of an everyday catcher with Posada ailing and the DH spot vacant through July at least.

  15. Jacob X May 15th, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Much easier to to pitch Javy after the schedule softens up. If he stays on schedule every 5 days, these are his opponents through the ASB

    @ NY Mets
    @ Minnesota
    vs. Baltimore
    @ Toronto
    vs. Houston
    vs. NY Mets
@ Arizona (he even gets to avoid Torre!)
    vs. Seattle
    @ Oakland
    @ Seattle

of course, rain outs and such could change things. We also have a weird off-day schedule, but the schedule softens up in a big way, so he will get plenty of chances without being skipped after this week.

  16. Haiku-man May 15th, 2010 at 5:43 pm

    After 6 MARINERS 2 Rays 0

  17. Giuseppe Franco May 15th, 2010 at 5:44 pm

Oh please, YankeeRay. Stop the tough love BS.

It’s May and the Yanks could be tied with the Rays in the next few hours. It’s not October yet.

Whether you like it or not, they need Vazquez to do his thing and help this team win games. Completely destroying this guy is not exactly the smartest idea in the world. Just like booing A-Rod wasn’t exactly the smartest thing the fans ever did, especially when you consider how much they needed him.

It makes more sense to avoid having someone like Pettitte swing a bat, but they shouldn’t be skipping Vazquez simply because they are facing the overrated Red Sox.

BTW, Hughes is still the #5 starter. Vazquez is getting skipped now due to ineffectiveness but it will be Hughes getting skipped a few times down the road because of his innings cap.

  18. Terry from NH May 15th, 2010 at 5:44 pm

I like the rotation for next week.. Hughes against the Sox will hopefully be the highlight of the week..

On a different subject, Who is your favorite super-utility player for the Yankees current and past?

My favorite is Randy Velarde who happens to be cousine of Mariners pitcher Vargas

  19. Bradley May 15th, 2010 at 5:45 pm

    Bret,

I don’t know how Cashman could have expected anything less when we signed him.

You could point to Burnett, but he changed his whole regime between starts and recognized what his problem was and clearly, Cash and his scouts bought his story.

NJ just has bad genes. He also refuses to swing the bat….

  20. stuckey May 15th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

“Whether you like it or not, they need Vazquez to do his thing and help this team win games. ”

It’s games from the quarter-pole, and Yankees have played their toughest stretch of schedule they’ll face this entire year, and their winning % if .667.

How long before fans realize that no, while it would certainly be nice, the Yankees don’t NEED Vazquez to do his thing

“Completely destroying this guy is not exactly the smartest idea in the world.”

He was skipped last turn and responded with his best game of the year.

Players don’t think like fans. This isn’t about some mental game. Vazquez problems has ben about mechanics. People need to stop regarding Vazquez like he’s a 13 year old who wasn’t in the Top 10 of the Hottest Girls freshman boy’s poll.

He’s a veteran professional baseball player. If he’s mechanically sound, he’ll pitch just fine, be it tomorrow or next week.

  21. Phil the Thrill May 15th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

Gil McDougald was the greatest super utility guy in Yankee history. We haven’t really had one since I started following them as a baby.

  22. Haiku-man May 15th, 2010 at 5:58 pm

    Mariners 2 Rays, 0 after 7

  23. Giuseppe Franco May 15th, 2010 at 6:00 pm

I’m not your typical fan, stuckey. I don’t overreact to losses and I don’t go berserk every time the Yanks face the Red Sox, unlike most LoHudders.

I know the Yanks have played extremely well so far. But their starters have performed better than they could have possibly expected. Sabathia hasn’t gotten on his role yet, but the others have overachieved a bit.

They will come back down to Earth somewhat and a guy like Vazquez will have to pick up the slack and give this team quality outings – just like the lineup had to do when both Teixeira and A-Rod were struggling.

  24. Finny May 15th, 2010 at 6:01 pm

Can’t wait to see the old nemesis Tigers get hurt really, really bad tonight.

I agree and a lot of people are missing that part of Girardi’s decision-making process.

Guisepp, not tough love just proper baseball management. Javy needs to work out his mechanics so a side session again and then start off the Mets series like Joe originally planned.
He is not the 4th starter right now but I do agree that Phil will be skipped to save innings later. Hopefully Javy rebounds which I believe he will and I do like him but during this tough stretch at home you go with your best and keep them on regular rest.
Not sure about the bat thing with Andy as he had one of the biggest hits in the WS last year but not having him hit is fine. I just think it’s more about aligning your best on proper rest and taking your best shot.
Without the rain out this wouldn’t have happened so Joe is just reacting to the situation and making the right call IMO.

  27. CRAWDADDY (Boycott ESPN-NY) May 15th, 2010 at 6:07 pm

The Javy decision is not just about one thing. I think Girardi and the Yankee Brass evaluated some issues with Javy and Pettitte and decided to go this way for now.

  28. CRAWDADDY (Boycott ESPN-NY) May 15th, 2010 at 6:10 pm

About an hour or so before the first game of the doubleheader the other day, I saw Mitre and Pettitte tossing the ball in the outfield of Comerica Park so it was good seeing Pettitte do well today without any health issues.

  29. pat May 15th, 2010 at 6:19 pm

Edwar Ramirez DFAed by Oakland.

  30. stuckey May 15th, 2010 at 6:19 pm

“They will come back down to Earth somewhat and a guy like Vazquez will have to pick up the slack and give this team quality outings”

I’ll say what I always say, the Yankees just didn’t not get a lot from their 5th starter in 2009, they got negative production. Yet they managed to win 103 games.

Yeah, perhaps Pettite is overachieving right now, but is it reasonable now to expect somewhat more from him in 2010 than in 2009? Same question with Burnett, his Fenway blow-up aside?

Can we now reasonably expect more from Hughes than Chamberlain produced in 2009.

Yankees have been without a reliable 5th starter for as long as I remember and i don’t see anything out there to suggest someone it’s more critical this year than in year’s past.

This is a 100 win team regardless of what Vazquez does the rest of the year.

    sea blowing the game

  32. Allan May 15th, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Seattle sucks ! How did people pick them to win their division?

  33. CRAWDADDY (Boycott ESPN-NY) May 15th, 2010 at 6:25 pm

A 2 run lead late in the game isn’t good enough against the Mariners unless you have a Joba and Rivera closing out the game for you. Plus, it’s too early to be scoreboard watching in which you’re hoping for Seattle to beat Tampa on the road.

  34. CRAWDADDY (Boycott ESPN-NY) May 15th, 2010 at 6:26 pm

I meant a 2 run lead agains the Rays.

  35. Dave in VA May 15th, 2010 at 6:30 pm

Did Javy have a throw day today, or would he be available for a couple innings *tomorrow*?

Vasquez had a good outing last time out; he got outpitched by my cousin (Porcello), not to mention the Yankee offense mostly taking the afternoon off. As long as he doesn’t take it personally I’m not that worried about skipping him again. As YankeeRay pointed out, further into the season they’ll have to skip Hughes a few times and I want Vasquez to be in better form when the team hits that point. If that means skipping him now, fine.

  36. Joe from Long Island May 15th, 2010 at 6:32 pm

GF – Hi, hope you’re well.

Skipping Vaz tells you what Girardi and Eiland think – that in mid-May, their faith in his pitching well against the teams they have to beat in the AL East is less than their desire to keep the guys who are pitching well on their regular routines.

This doesn’t set into stone what the situation will be later this season, of course. And they will certainly need Vaz to pitch well, for the reasons you gave. The other guys will likely slump a bit, and Phil will need to have his innings limited; he may indeed have a start skipped in July or August.

So, Edwar was cut by Oakland. I would have thought that team, in that ballpark, was his best bet to stick in the bigs. That guy has given it all he has – too bad. Maybe if he put on a few pounds….

  37. Giuseppe Franco May 15th, 2010 at 6:34 pm

    Whatever, stuckey.

Can’t always compare this season and last. The Rays are tougher than the Red Sox were last year and they had a ridiculous 15 walkoff wins. That’s not going to happen again.

They also have two starters with an ERA under 2.00 right now. And Burnett has been much better and much more economical this season so far. They can’t sustain that kind of dominance the entire season. Not in this division.

I’m as optimistic as any Yankee fan and that’s always been my reputation on this board. But it won’t be as easy to win 100 games this season.

Different year. Different team. Some things bounced their way last season that you just can’t expect again.

    names redacted.

  40. SportsGeek May 15th, 2010 at 6:38 pm

I’ve always loved Andy Pettitte. I hated it when the Yankees brass let him go after 2003!!

He is doing great this year, but I never expected him to do this well!!!

One thing particularly impressive- his WHIP stat is his 2nd best ever. And as part of that are his impressive in H/9 (below 9- He has only done that 4 times before.)

    Go Andy!!!

PS- what happenned in the 6th inning, Andy?- you threw 11 consecutive balls…
