Yankees win another one at home

The Yankees offense stayed hot this afternoon, and Andy Pettitte continued his dominant start to the season. With 6.1 scoreless innings from Pettitte, plus home runs from Mark Teixeira and Jorge Posada, the Yankees beat the Twins 7-1 for their second victory in a row. After a slow road trip, the lineup has now scored 15 runs in two games since coming home. Pettitte has yet to lose, improving to 5-0 with a 1.79 ERA.

Ok, great win – there were so many positives:

    1) Andy – pitched well and obviously felt good
    2) Alex and Tex – getting hot and staying hot?
    3) Posada
    4) Jeter

Just a really great day ……..

If Andy had this kind of D behind him for the rest of his career, we’d be talking a lot more seriously about his Hall of Fame chances.

A-Rod says when he lowers the leg kick he sees the ball much better and his power and production go way up.

  7. Rich in NJ May 15th, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Using Marte v. Thome made more sense than using him v. Mauer last night. Thome isn’t nearly as good and he’s an age cohort with Marte.

Classic Kim Jones: “In these two games, you and Alex, eight hits, eight RBIs. What it does it mean if you Alex get hot at the same time?”

    Phill-

That’s a very good point. He’s pitched in front of some awful yankee defenses.

His BABIP has always been higher than average and that defense is part of why that is.

Well duh, less body movement, he’s a tall man, when Manny does it..it levels his eye to the pitcher’s release point, Al is tall enough to see it straight at 6’3

You know what’s funny it took yrs for AL to figure that out. Last season when Long started using Pujols as the example to shortening his swing and leg kick.

    CB,

His defense independant metrics have often painted the picture of an elite pitcher.

  16. CB May 15th, 2010 at 4:26 pm

    Carl-

It’s good to hear Alex say that. He’s suddenly looked like a completely different hitter over the past two days and the light seemed to have flipped on between at bat 2 and 3 last night.

And he’s continued to maintain those solid mechanics in his base today.

He looks great again. Good to hear that he’s identified the problem and has been able to fix it within game action.

Figures Logan is the one sent down when Park gets activated tomorrow. He did go two innings today, and really hasn’t done anything to distinguish himself.

A side effect of this is that it leaves Marte as the sole lefty, which means he should get more regular work.

Mo for the 9th, Joba as his caddy, and Park/Robertson leading up to them, with Marte as the lefty, isn’t bad. Mitre and Nova/Melancon (I think they want Nova to continue starting, hence Scranton) as the mop up, long relief guys. That doesn’t strike me as bad.

Kim Jones can’t ask anything hard hitting, she has to lob softball questions that generate positive ‘quotes’. It must be frustrating for the smarter baseball people to have to answer those questions

  28. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

Jerkface, I live in NY, so ESPN is blacked out for me……..National TV doesn’t mean anything for me. I would have liked him to get another day of rest and I would have liked him to have faced Santana on Sunday night. Joe didn’t exactly explain why he kept it this way – I hope it’s not because he wants to avoid Javy against the Sox.

  29. SJ44 May 15th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

No sense moving everyone around in the rotation. This keeps 4 of the 5 guys on turn.

    I like it.

  30. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Swisher is day to day every day………per Joe.

  31. Jerkface May 15th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Betsy: Makes sense. ESPN should mean something because it means more people get to see Hughes dominate :x

I wanted that Hughes/Santana match up too, but oh well. Maybe he can catch Johan at NYS

  32. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Well, Phil and Javy both pitched on Wednesday, so they wouldn’t be moving anyone around. It actually causes more rest issues this way. Phil pitching Tuesday would mean he’s on 1 extra day of rest; Javy pitching Friday means he’s not going to have pitched in over a week.

  33. Joe from Long Island May 15th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Jerkface – I think you’re right. Both Kim and Suzyn are instructed not to ask anything remotely difficult or controversial. I even remember one time, 2007, when Kim asked Joe a probing type of question about a pitching change, and Joe ripped her, right on TV.

I’ve heard Kim on FAN doing her fill-in work there, and it’s like night and day different. It’s unfortunate, but that’s how YES does it.

  34. Jerkface May 15th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

He is on pace to pitch game 1 2 or 3 of the NYM series at the stadium depending on what they do with off days.

    So theres hope :)

  35. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

I’m annoyed, Jerkface – I really, really wanted that matchup. I wish at least Joe had given a reason……..

  36. Joe from Long Island May 15th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

    Joe Torre, that is.

  37. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 15th, 2010 at 4:39 pm

It sounded like Joe wanted to keep everyone else on regular rest; Javy was supposed to pitch tomorrow, but the rain messed that up. Basically the path of least resistance. You disrupt one pitcher instead of several.

It’s not a reflection on Javy vs. Fenway.

  38. Jerkface May 15th, 2010 at 4:40 pm

’m annoyed, Jerkface – I really, really wanted that matchup. I wish at least Joe had given a reason…….

The reasoning is that all the pitchers but Javy go on regular rest and Javy got pushed to the Mets because he can hit

  39. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Well, I’m not that annoyed, but I’m disappointed, lol

  40. pat May 15th, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Phil pitching Tuesday threw CC, AJ and Andy off regular rotation.

  41. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Jerkface, makes sense……….well, maybe the Mets will push Santana up a day (yeah, right, lol).

  42. Jerkface May 15th, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Betsy: Take solace, Hughes will be with the Yankees for a long time and Santana (unfortunately for mets fans) with the mets. Lots of chances to match up :)

  43. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 4:44 pm

    LOL Jerkface………..

  44. CB May 15th, 2010 at 4:45 pm

The team is struggling to hit and is suffering from a bunch of injuries.

They are playing their two biggest division rivals and they are arranging the rotation so that the guys who are throwing the best pitch in those games.

With these injuries they are going to need to maximize what they can get out of their starting rotation this week.

  45. 7789 May 15th, 2010 at 4:45 pm

Good decision to keep Hughes on his regular rest he is on a role right now dont mess him. And I am more confident sending Sabathia against the red sox than Javy on Tuesday. And pitching Javy on Friday in a big ballpark against an nl east team a division he dominated last year should be good for him.

  46. Phil the Thrill May 15th, 2010 at 4:46 pm

We’re using our 4 best against the Sox and Rays. That makes all the sense for what we’re trying to do.

  47. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 4:47 pm

CB, darn it – I can’t argue against that logic.

  48. Jerkface May 15th, 2010 at 4:48 pm

Hughes is going to be big in burying the Sox. I want him to get 4 or 5 starts vs the Sox, 5 – 0 :)

  49. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Jerkface, I would be pretty neat to see Phil become a slayer of Sox, lol. I didn’t quite mean what I said about national tv. I sometimes like it if I want to get a national perspective on the team (or Phil, lol)……..

  50. Jerkface May 15th, 2010 at 4:55 pm

Hughes has it in him to be an ‘everyone slayer’, but I’d take Red Sox Slayer just fine :x

I hope Hughes can get some of that Pedro/Clemens in him where he just shuts down your rival and any win against them is incredibly hard fought/lucky.

  51. pat May 15th, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Mets pull Perez from rotation and put him in the pen. A $12M middle reliever?

  52. Al May 15th, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Well now it is Hughes against Pelfrey on Saturday night (FOX primetime game). That is not nearly as sexy a matchup as it was a few weeks ago when Pelfrey set the world on fire, but it should still be a nice matchup of 2 young NY starters.

  53. Yank1 May 15th, 2010 at 4:57 pm

CC vs. Santana on Sunday Night is hardly a bad consolation prize ;) The battle of the 2 NY aces.

  54. Haiku-man May 15th, 2010 at 4:59 pm

  55. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Wow, Saturday is a night game?

Jerkface, I deserved that  for suggesting that Phil only become a slayer of Sox. He’s on his way to sainthood – oops, I mean acehood, so that means he’ll be shutting down lots of teams (like he did to Detroit).

I love the   faces. Sorry, I had to………it’s especially funny when Nick uses it.

  56. Rick May 15th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

SJ 44 mentioned Royce Ring. Hard to say with Park ready to come off the DL. Unless Ivan Nova is needed tomorrow, he’s going back to AAA to get regular work. Maybe a switch of Logan and Ring ?

I like to use those faces even when I’m angry, that guy just looks so angry :x

  59. Jerkface May 15th, 2010 at 5:02 pm

  60. Al May 15th, 2010 at 5:02 pm

The lefty out of the pen – Takahashi or whatever his name is.

He pitches a day before we face them, thankfully. We all know how we do against starters who are coming out of the bullpen to make a start.

  61. Jay May 15th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

    So the week looks like

    Hughes vs. Matsuzaka
    Sabathia vs. Beckett
    Burnett vs. W. Davis
    Pettitte vs. Shields
    Vazquez vs. Niese
    Hughes vs. Pelfrey
    Sabathia vs. Santana

  62. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Jerkface, I like the way his mouth is open, like he’s about to yell something. I have a stuffed happy face doll on my desk at work (I’m obsessed with happy faces – I just love them). A few years ago, one of my coworkers drew evil eyebrows on him (like the  face) and now I have to keep a piece of paper taped to them so that I can stare at a :) instead of a  doll. I still think  is the funniest emoticon, though.

  63. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

Well, all those who were asking about who is better, Hughes or Pelfrey, now have their opportunity to chime in, lol

    Sabathia vs. Beckett
    Burnett vs. W. Davis
    Pettitte vs. Shields
    Vazquez vs. Niese

I am a little late in congratulating my boy, Andy, on a great game. Glad to see some bats coming alive.

I will enjoy watching Hughes whenever he pitches. I do wish Mitre was pitching tomorrow however.

  72. LGY May 15th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Someone needs to blindfold Hughes when Matsuzaka is on the mound. Don’t want any ideas slipping into his subconscious.

Better off probably sterilizing the mound too after every half inning with Dice-K, just in case nibblelistis is contagious. Can never be too safe with a young arm.

  73. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 5:14 pm

This might sound silly, but why does Phil somtimes lick his fingers after he throws a pitch?

  74. Zebra May 15th, 2010 at 5:14 pm

On paper, we have the advantage in every one of those games. I do think Beckett will be much better now that he has some extra rest, so CC has to rebound. Santana also, you figure, would rise to the occasion and pitch well at home like he usually does.

Hughes has a considerable advantage over Dice-K and Pelfrey. Both are basically 5 inning pitchers.

Vazquez vs. Niese – Niese doesn’t go deep into games either, but he’s facing us for the first time and is a lefty so he might give us some problems.

Have slight advantages in both Tampa games.

    I’ll settle for 4-2.

  75. Light in August May 15th, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Is there a pitcher in baseball who hasn’t pitched a perfect game against Tampa Bay?

  76. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 15th, 2010 at 5:15 pm

LOL LGY, I don’t think there is any chance Phil catches what Matsuzaka has. He really is extraordinarily confident for such a young pitcher; he might have a bad game, but it won’t be because he’s afraid. The Sox can hit, so it’s yet another test for him……..but he keeps passing these tests.

Only the Twins, Dodgers and Devil Rays have ever had 2 perfect games thrown against them. Though, counting Larson’s perfect game in the WS, the Dodgers have had it done to them 3 times. The Yanks are the only team to have thrown 3 perfect games.
