Signs pointing to surgery for Johnson

Sam called me on my way to the stadium saying he’d heard a rumor that the Yankees had already scheduled Nick Johnson’s surgery. By the time I got to the park and settled in for a phone call to Brian Cashman, Ken Rosenthal was reporting that Johnson’s surgery will be tomorrow and likely keep him out of the mix until July.

Still waiting for official confirmation from the Yankees, but where there’s smoke, there’s usually an extended DL stint for the Yankees designated hitter.

Juan Miranda has been hitting in Triple-A for two years now, waiting for an opportunity to prove himself at the big league level. This seems to be that opportunity. He’s in New York now and could get a long look.

miranda has to hit better than thames to become the regular DH. Expectation’s aren’t too high.

we will get by if it’s only the DH we need to replace.

Jeeeesh. Nick Johnson ought to have -FRAGILE- stamped on his forehead.

I hope Miranda takes advantage of his long-awaited opportunity.

I guess they didn’t think the cortisone shot was going to work.

This is Phil’s most recent interview with Kim that will air tonight. I can not believe she asked him about opposing players (the O’s) saying his FB was straight and whether that’s the biggest change in him since. Um, he was pitching with a broken rib in April 2008………..that might account for his lack of stuff.

Well, can’t say I’m surprised about Johnson. I was hoping against hope that he’d be lucky this season. ‘Twas not to be. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Does Miranda get more of an opportunity to stick around? Does GGBG have a good enough OBP to stay at #2 more regularly, or is Swish better there?

1/2 of the next 40 games are against the NL and 1/2 are in their park where no DH is necessary.

    No big deal.

They were winning without him already and they’ll continue to win without him.

Whether its Miranda, Thames, Winn or someone else it doesn’t matter. The rest of the lineup is so good they’ll more than overcome this.

Once Granderson comes back NJ will be an afterthought. And when (if) NJ comes back in August it will be just like adding another bat.

“I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!”

or that Nick Johnson needs surgery. Yawn.

Can someone refresh my memory on the return of Granderson?

I thought it was early June

I think once his bicep is fully healthy Swisher makes the most sense to move up and get the bulk of the ABs out of the 2-hole full time. Gardner I don’t know that he can keep up his early season OBP, even though I know it was always a skill for him in the minors. Swisher is proven there, and he could do more damage getting fastballs to hit in front of Mark and Al. Plus putting Gardy back down in the 9 slot lengthens the lineup and gives you the 2 leadoff hitters effect that Girardi seems to like.

I’d guess Johnson misses more like 50-60 games, Mick. I’d go the next 40 with what they have though.

  17. m May 17th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

    Rotate Jorge, Juan, & Marcus.

    Doreen,

I think that GGBG is better in front of Jeter (avoiding the DP, less jumping bean action in front of the 3/4 hitters.) And Swisher seems to be able to hit anywhere.

Until Granderson comes back though, I like Swisher hitting in the 6/7 spot.

I just posted in the last my thoughts. Too bad for Nick Johnson but the Yankees of other DH options. Granderson is the guy the Yankees need back soon. Gardy is going to cool down and we don’t need Thames in the OF.

  19. John in Ohio May 17th, 2010 at 3:43 pm

    Griffey, Sr., eh?

    LOL

  20. Chris May 17th, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Ya real glad we got this guy! Who didn’t see this coming other than the Yankees front office???

Would love Damon hitting in the 2 hole right now!

  21. JimmieFoxx May 17th, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I think it would be best if the Yankees proceed with the notion/assumption that Nick Johnson will be out for the season.

  22. Marco May 17th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

    Trade for DAMON! ;)

Seems that this is the situation Damon was hinting at after he was out of the running to resign with the Yankees. With the way Austin Jackson is working out for the Tigers, they may be open to another prospect or two from the Yankees system.

  23. SAS May 17th, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Personally, I think they will go and try to get a DH who might be an outfielder. There are just too many other injuries.

  24. Ant928 May 17th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Dude?! Giambi, Senior, and Sheffield?!?! Pass the crackpipe you’re smoking and the Kool-Aid you’re drinking!

Mr. Unbreakable….. Is he related to Pavano?
