The pie is back

Tonight was the first Yankee Stadium pie of the season, but not the first of Marcus Thames’ career. Thames got a pie from Alberto Castillo after he homered in his first major league at-bat back in 2002. “It’s an awesome feeling,” Thames said. “Especially against those guys over there.” As for A.J. Burnett, he always has the whipped cream ready. “I don’t sit at home waiting to pie someone,” Burnett said. “But it puts me in a good mood to do it.”

Good for Vazquez. It’s nice to see a smile on his face for once.

  2. Rich in NJ May 17th, 2010 at 11:46 pm

It has been a privilege to watch A-Rod as a Yankee.

And I will repeat in case it was missed: Marcus Thames owns me.

I’m so happy for Javy – Curry just mentioned (oh, I agree LGY – Curry has been a fantastic addition) that

  4. Jerkface May 17th, 2010 at 11:46 pm

I flipped out when Thames hit that HR and ran around my apartment.

  5. NYY626 May 17th, 2010 at 11:46 pm

    Andy’s face = amazing.

  6. Jerkface May 17th, 2010 at 11:46 pm

  7. Carl May 17th, 2010 at 11:46 pm

    Look at Andy lol

  8. tjd - Yankees again in 2010! May 17th, 2010 at 11:47 pm

Signing Park was a nice idea but was always a bit of a reach. Given that there’s guys like Sanchez and Nova waiting in the wings though, how much more of him do we have to see? Same goes for Boone Logan who can’t throw strikes – why not give Royce Ring a try?

Good game for Vazquez, lost in all this his big K kept the team in the game.

  9. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 17th, 2010 at 11:47 pm

Javy looked incredibly happy. Hey, the pen worked for Phil, guess it works for Javy, too, lol.

That’s a great pic – lol at Andy.

  10. Ray May 17th, 2010 at 11:47 pm

I just don’t know if Hughes can pitch at home. He has to adjust at home with the short right porch. Him being a RH batter has to be very careful when pitching to power hitting lefties. He saw Ortiz and Drew take him deep. Andy was awful at home early on too and he learned how to pitch to the ballpark, he started throwing more 2-seemers, same with Sabathia.

Hughes has had his best outings on the road – Oaktown, Detroit, Fenway.

He had a good outing against the Chi Sox at home, but they are a weak hitting team. His Angels home start was a struggle as well.

He has to talk to CC/Andy about pitching at home and learn how to incorporate more 2-seemers to keep the ball in the yard.

  11. BG11 May 17th, 2010 at 11:48 pm

Well, the baseball gods are watching tonight. that was an utterly ridiculous use of javi, so i hope someone learned from the experience when it all worked out in the end. i mean, i was ok with him as a 5th starter (despite the uproar across the league–i.e. jopo). but to make him a reliever is bad for baseball and the entire league should be up in arms. and i love you a-rod.

  12. joek May 17th, 2010 at 11:48 pm

im just curios chad could u ask how it works with the pies. does burnett have them ready for every home game? when does he prepare them? ect. ect.

  13. JM May 17th, 2010 at 11:48 pm

Vazquez was smiling during the interview, which was nice to see. Said he doesn’t know what he’s doing as a reliever but he just tried to throw his good pitches against Youk. He said he was ready to pitch for as long as they needed him. He was glad, though, that the game was over quick. He threw fewer pitches tonight then he would have in a normal bullpen and he’s ready to go Friday.

  14. m May 17th, 2010 at 11:49 pm

    Repost:

    Betsy,

maybe now they can stop those lame innerviews? :P

What a come back! How’s the awful defense by the Sox? Gardner shouldn’t have even been on base for Alex. But I’m glad he was. :)

    Did Thames get pie?

I had someone here and had to explain to them why the guy with the slowest bat on the team was going to get the first pie of the season.

  15. Bronx Jeers May 17th, 2010 at 11:50 pm

  16. LGY May 17th, 2010 at 11:51 pm

How can you get on Park at all tonight?

The guy just came off the DL and was asked to go 2 innings in a big spot.

He looked good in the 1st inning, but lost it in the 2nd. I am not worried about Park at all. That was too much to put on the guy this quick.

  17. JM May 17th, 2010 at 11:52 pm

Again about Hughes, Jack Curry was saying how Ortiz and Drew were just waiting on the cutter. He said Hughes has to rely more on the fastball in those situations as it’s his strongest pitch. He called the cutter a “great weapon” but said you can’t over-use it.

  18. m May 17th, 2010 at 11:52 pm

Did we establish why Joba & Rivera were not available?

  19. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 17th, 2010 at 11:52 pm

    M, no!

Today was sooooooooo funny and Phil got in a zing on Kim; he’s such a cool kid.

What’s this about Phil not being able to pitch at home? Um, hardly true. He pitched well against the Angels and very well against the Sox……..

Jason, I like Eiland a lot and he certainly knows Phil very well. He’s told Phil not to fall in love with the cutter, but he’s a kid and you know kids, lol. Yes I remember that pitch to Leyritz, though I can’t for the life of me remember the name of that pitcher………darn. I just like the idea that he can break it out to throw hitters off. I really want him to get back to his curve……As Jack Curry said, he’s a very smart kid; he’ll figure it out.

  20. Al Rivera May 17th, 2010 at 11:53 pm

It has been a privilege to watch A-Rod as a Yankee

After all he’s been thru and to see him smiling on the field, that’s a bad sign to the rest of baseball

  21. JM May 17th, 2010 at 11:53 pm

    m,

Joe said Joba wasn’t available because he pitched Sunday and had warmed up twice on Saturday….He didn’t really say about Mo.

  22. GreenBeret7 May 17th, 2010 at 11:54 pm

BS. Those home runs that Hughes gave up had nothing to do with YS’s “short porch”. They were going out of an airport.

  23. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 17th, 2010 at 11:54 pm

    White Sox, that is

LGY, agreed; I still think Park will help us.

  24. Jerkface May 17th, 2010 at 11:54 pm

Did we establish why Joba & Rivera were not available?

They weren’t going to burn Rivera in a losing game, Joba got up twice on saturday and then pitched on sunday so he was out.

  25. m May 17th, 2010 at 11:55 pm

    JM,

    Thanks for that.

I’m glad Park is back, but that was a lot to ask of him. Please send Logan down. He’s a nice kid, but we need a more reliable picture.

    Nice job by Marte.

  26. m May 17th, 2010 at 11:55 pm

I want to see a picture of Ivan Nova.

  27. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 17th, 2010 at 11:55 pm

    Mo was available. Robertson wasn’t.

Mo was the last pitcher available after Vazquez. Vazquez was staying in as long as necessary.

Hey! i got my best case scenario!!!! :)

  28. CRAWDADDY (Boycott ESPN-NY) May 17th, 2010 at 11:55 pm

Girardi said Javy would’ve thrown 100 pitches tonight if necessary because Mo was the only other pitcher in the bullpen available tonight.

  29. Michelle May 17th, 2010 at 11:55 pm

Alex is rocking the plaid after the game

  30. GreenBeret7 May 17th, 2010 at 11:55 pm

I saw thatsubject headline on here and it said “Pie Is Back”. I thought it said “Pig Is Back” and thought Hit Pig was back on here trolling.

  31. scooter10 May 17th, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Hughes pitched pretty well up until the Scutaro and Pedroia at bats. Vazquez with a nice win to give him momentum going into Friday’s start. And nice to see a walk-off win, the first of the year. Marcus Thames played a great game – from working the count for a double to his the walk off home run. Three runs each for Gardy and Cervy. Great to see the young guys contribute every game. And finally, Arod with another clutch home run.

  32. Carl May 17th, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Yeah Mo was starting to stretch at one point.

  33. UkÉ May 17th, 2010 at 11:57 pm

  34. m May 17th, 2010 at 11:57 pm

DRob and Joba will be available tomorrow.

  46. Jason22 May 18th, 2010 at 12:02 am

    Betsy,

    Mark Wohlers is the pitcher.

I know Eliand has been with Phil a very long time, so that makes me hopeful he will teach him well.

Phil is smart, Frankie is smart, they are both young, and tonight in the long run could be a very good thing, as long as they do learn from it.

  47. wait, what? May 18th, 2010 at 12:02 am

To think, none of that would have happened if Randy Winn didn’t ground out to shortstop to end the fifth.

  48. Jerkface May 18th, 2010 at 12:02 am

Melancon, he has had a string of good outings. Lots of strikes and K’s. If Marte continues to completely miss location with everything they should consider DLing him and trying Ring. But really, that’d only be worth it if Melancon can show some consistency up here.

  49. JM May 18th, 2010 at 12:03 am

I see Tampa walked off tonight, although it took them 11 innings to do it.

  50. CB May 18th, 2010 at 12:04 am

The yankees were playing with essentially a 21 man roster tonight. One of those 21 was Park who was just coming off of rehab and didn’t throw many innings on the way back.

This game was always going to be ugly in terms of line up construction and roster issues.

But the team pulled it off. If you’re going to win in baseball, you must be able to win under sub-optimal conditions.

Coming into the game you had to hope Hughes would be able to carry that load given the injuries to the position players and the arms unavailable out of the pen.

That didn’t happen. Good teams are multi-dimensional and can go to a plan B. Tonight the Yankees probably went to plan C. So be it.

The heart of the line up carried the team tonight. And that’s not only fine – it’s expected. Not every night – but they have to be able to carry the team given all of the challenges they are facing.

And they are responding to those obstacles. Tex is squaring balls up even on outs.

And Alex has just been remarkable.

There was always going to be periods of the season when the Yankees would need Alex to put them on his back. Hard to know when it would be. But it was going to happen.

That time is now. And he’s stepped up to assume that burden.

Which is what great players do.

  51. RS May 18th, 2010 at 12:04 am

Best stat of the night from Curry: Cervelli could go 0-19 w/RISP and still be hitting .333 w/RISP for the season.

  52. Trevor May 18th, 2010 at 12:05 am

    Rivera
    Chamberlain
    Marte
    Robertson

    Send Logan down.

    What the hell?

  54. Dylan May 18th, 2010 at 12:05 am

Is it fair to say that A-Rod is the most clutch player in baseball. Ethier gets a ton of clutch hits and walk-offs but A-Rod has done it in the post season and against the Yankees most hated rivals.

Jason, that’s it – thanks! I’ll be interested to see how Phil does coming off this game; of course, he didn’t pitch great in Baltimore, but he was able to figure it out then…..and then bounced back against the White Sox. He’s going to have growing pains, but boy have we seen what he’s capable of.

  59. Haiku-man May 18th, 2010 at 12:08 am

I hope Phil doesn’t beat himself up not getting win #6, because he’s been perfect, and due for a loss.

Haiku, per the post-game show, Phil looked like he handled it fine. He looked all clean-cut and freshly scrubbed, lol. Seriously, he clearly felt bad about his performance as he called it embarrassing…….he sort of laughed at the beginning and essentially said he didn’t have much at all tonight.

Don’t forget, The Sox saw Hughes about 9 days ago. They knew what to expect. Not easy to shut down the same lineup in such a short span.

People here try to discredit the Sox offense for some reason, but they just continue to score runs. They are a very good offense. Not what they once were, but still very dangerous.

  73. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 18th, 2010 at 12:12 am

Well, Papi does look like he’s back, but I said this before the comeback – the Yankees can’t worry about the Sox as they have their own issues. Same goes for fans…….

Ben, good point about Phil having just seen the Sox. Teams are going to adjust to him – he’s not going to have it so easy now and Phil is going to have to adjust back. He still has these very long innings which are going to prevent him from going deep into games if this keeps up.

  82. m May 18th, 2010 at 12:17 am

Papi being back is a huge story. He’s one of the linchpins to their season. But that doesn’t matter to much because Papi alone won’t help them avoid being what they are right now. Which is a .500 team.

Lackey, Beckett, matsuzaka still aren’t performing up to par. Their defense was been atrocious. One of the worst facets of their game.

BTW. That was a very tender moment when V-mart patted Cervelli. He’s not a true Red Sock.

  86. Walrus May 18th, 2010 at 12:18 am

Hughes has a pretty soft landing spot in his next start.

Big Ballpark and a mediocre lineup and their big power guys are all righties…. Barajas, Wright, Bay. Francour and Reyes are not doing much at all.

Really, if he pitches carefully to Ike Davis, he should be fine. The hype for the game will be ridiculous, but lineup-wise, he has faced much better in the AL so far.

  87. m May 18th, 2010 at 12:19 am

    Fran,

I am. Watching Phil & the Yanks, I saw the score was 4-0 bad guys. I flipped back and forth. Saw the horrible slide by Phil and the rest of the relievers (5HR?). But I had a guest later on, so I couldn’t watch the end of the blowout. :(

    But I did see the walk-off. :)

(Lakers blowout, which I’m as-suming because I don’t know the final score, still buzzing from Papelbon’s fail job)

  96. Rich in NJ May 18th, 2010 at 12:23 am

“I assume Heyman is asking who is worse, Gary Matthews or Chan Ho Park?”

Yes, it was a totally unfair comparison. Park was good last season, and if used properly, he can be good here.

  97. Fran (the original) May 18th, 2010 at 12:23 am

    Mel,

You saw the best part :)

  98. PHO May 18th, 2010 at 12:24 am

Hope the media has some nice positive stories tomorrow. I know the papers probably will.

The talk shows will suck though, so will SNY. They will ask if Hughes is starting to be figured out, they are going to bash Girardi for his moves, bash Cashman for signing Chan Ho Park, say the pen is a legit concern, etc.

Mike hated the Park signing anyway, so he will spend time bashing that. Joe and Evan love to bash Joe so they will say he overmanaged (without even knowing the pen situation).

Oh well, its much more tolerable coming off a win though.

  99. BD (Boston Dave) May 18th, 2010 at 12:24 am

“Really, if he pitches carefully to Ike Davis, he should be fine.”

    ————–

    are you joking?

The only thing he needs to worry about is a guy with a handful of MLB at-bats?

I don’t care how you think the Mets are doing right now. They have some quality hitters.

I hope Phil doesn’t take the Mets to be as much of a joke as you are.

  100. m May 18th, 2010 at 12:24 am

    Fran,

maybe I brought them good luck? :)

Although I did see Jeter swing at BALL 4 to end the 8th.

If you go back and watch Thames get Pied, the whole team stayed in the dugout to watch.

Yeah, I won’t get on Park at all………I just know that we got lucky that this did not go into the 10th because now Javy can pitch Friday.

  104. Haiku-man May 18th, 2010 at 12:27 am

    Betsy

I could tell he was not on his game from the first inning, he threw 18 pitches,a 28 pitch 5th, and multiple 19 pitch inniings. He ‘ would get 2 k’s, then throw balls, nibbling before he’s get the out.

  105. TD213 May 18th, 2010 at 12:28 am

Gary Matthews Jr. is hitting .173 with 1 RBI, 2 doubles in 50+ ABs. And he is 2-15 with 8 Ks as a pinch hitter, which is his primary role on the Mets.

Park pitched 3 scoreless in Fenway
2 scoreless in the home opener
    clean 7th tonight

He has had 1 bad outing. The 2nd inning tonight was not his fault.

    Heyman sucks at life

  106. Fran (the original) May 18th, 2010 at 12:28 am

    Mel,

You probably were the good luck charm. Make sure you don’t have company during the 9th inning tomorrow in case you’re needed ;)

Yankees with the best home record in the league.

Nice things you find out on a Sux postgame!

    :)

  108. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 18th, 2010 at 12:30 am

Haiku, I missed the first, but apparently he looked good. After that with the long innings……..not so great. The 5th looked like it was going to be easy and then……….not. However, every bad start can be looked at as a learning experience. His talent is no fluke nor were his performances. I’m just hoping he hasn’t lost confidence off of one start………I don’t think that will be the case.

  109. Uncle Ellsworth May 18th, 2010 at 12:30 am

why the comparison between Park and Matthews?

  110. BD (Boston Dave) May 18th, 2010 at 12:30 am

“Yankees with the best home record in the league.”

    ————-

And unlike the Sox who have played 60% of their games at home so far, the Yanks have played 60% of their games on the road.

They have plenty more of that home field advantage to go…

  111. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 18th, 2010 at 12:31 am

Who’s worse? Jon Heyman or Wally Matthews?

  112. Frank May 18th, 2010 at 12:32 am

    BD,

I think he meant from a pure left/right standpoint, the Mets lineup is favorable for him. Which you can’t disagree with. Especially in that ballpark.

Sure, if he makes mistakes he will get hit, but that is true of any start against any team. Would you prefer his next start was in Minnesota? or the Phillies?

  113. CR9 May 18th, 2010 at 12:32 am

    Just watched 24!

What an exhilarating game!!! Aint gonna get to sleep for a bit tonight!!

I see Trisha is still riding HIGH after this THRILLING win!!

You couldnt have scripted that better, with Timmy Timmy Thames being welcomed back to the yankees in style!!

  114. BD (Boston Dave) May 18th, 2010 at 12:32 am

why the comparison between Park and Matthews?

    ————–

sports journalism and analysis has gone down the toilet?

and rather than focus on all the things that went right tonight, that joke of a writer comes up with a meaningless thought and tries to turn it into something worth reading.

  115. z May 18th, 2010 at 12:32 am

hey look, the Mariners scored 4 runs. That’s like a week’s worth for them.

lost the game, but still — 4 runs!

  116. Bank North May 18th, 2010 at 12:34 am

Boston Dave – Lighten up, bro. Not every post needs to be analyzed to death. The guy was just giving his opinion on Hughes. Unless you think he sucks and won’t win again. The Yanks won, you should be happy.

  117. BD (Boston Dave) May 18th, 2010 at 12:34 am

    Frank,

    You’re probably right.

I just found the “if he pitches carefully to Ike Davis, he should be alright” a bit strange.

Perhaps he should pitch carefully to David Wright, Jason Bay, Barajas, etc as well :)

  118. Jerkface May 18th, 2010 at 12:34 am

    Betsy,

Hughes just didn’t put anyone away. They were fouling off too many pitches. He went fastball too much but I don’t think he had his curve tonight.

  119. BD (Boston Dave) May 18th, 2010 at 12:35 am

    Bank North,

    His opinion on Hughes?

He was giving his opinion on the Mets offense and basically saying it stinks.

To say that he only needs to be careful to Ike Davis?

perhaps you need to be analyzed dude. seek help.

  120. stuart May 18th, 2010 at 12:35 am

park got signed for pennies for 1 yr. not exactly a big deal.

hughes overused the cutter against guys who cannot catch up to his fastball, why help them out.

huge win.. Arod is the man bottom line he is new man the last 2 seasons…We are suprised when he does not come thru……….

still girardi took Joba out yesterday after 23 pitches that killed the pen for 2 days not 1. joba, mo, robertson, all available manana..

boston is in trouble… they forgot how to pitch….

  121. Uncle Ellsworth May 18th, 2010 at 12:35 am

BD so there is no reason for Matthews/Park. did Mathews mess up tonight?

    Jack Bauer has gone Rogue

  122. m May 18th, 2010 at 12:36 am

    Fran,

I have to admit I wasn’t very optimistic. I really thought we could do something against Bard who had lost the plate.

There was so much talk about no walk-offs X number of games into lthe season. And then Gardner hit that flare (thank goodness that LF dove for it and whiffed). And then Alex! He’s so strong.

Then I knew we would win it. Didn’t think it would be of Papelsmapple. But that makes it even better. Since we had to suffer looking at his fishy lips. :eww:

I’m just so relieved we won. Phil must feel awful that he lost the cushion, but that’s the way the ball hooks fair sometimes.

We kept pace with TB, and snuffed out any joy the Sox were feeling. Did you see the Sox smiling in the dugout. I mean they had every right to, but boy did those smiles disappear fast.

What a pressure situation for Javier and he handled it well. It should help his confidence. The fans at Yankee stadium got to see him pitch better. It’s all good!!

  126. z May 18th, 2010 at 12:39 am

Wally Matthews is infinitely worse than Jon Heyman, imo.

    that’s not hyperbole, either.

here’s how Matthews would have written up the Yanks WS run last year:

“Yankees need six games to beat the Phillies. Potential problems?”

  127. CR9 May 18th, 2010 at 12:39 am

Javy deserved this! What a great guy! I cant wait for him to come out and start dominating teams, and put all his doubters in their place!!!

  128. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 18th, 2010 at 12:39 am

BD, it wasn’t that bad of a post. The Mets are not awful and even if they were they are still a major league team and to be respected, but I think Walrus was just suggesting that it’s a good matchup for him. Like with any pitcher, if you don’t execute you’ll get beat, no matter who you’re facing.

Jerkface, Phil sometimes has a hard time putting people away – he’s going to have to do a better job of that or find a way of getting quicker outs. Of course tonight was just a bad night and in his other starts, he’d generally racked up high pitch counts only to end up being very efficient. He kind of said he didn’t have much tonight – it happens, certainly.

  132. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 18th, 2010 at 12:42 am

M, he used the word “embarrassing”, but I’ll bet his teammates patted him on the butt and told him that he’s picked them up more than once and not to worry about it.

I caught some of Kim Jones with Mike today (part of the interview is on WFAN) and she said (actually, he did ask if Phil had a personality, but he qualified it by saying that he didn’t think Phil had a “big” personality) that not only is Phil becoming the pitcher the Yanks always thought he could be, but that he’s becoming a really good presence in the clubhouse – something to that effect.

  133. Pat M. May 18th, 2010 at 12:42 am

  137. BD (Boston Dave) May 18th, 2010 at 12:43 am

    Betsy,

I’ll say it one more time and let it go.

    His words: “mediocre lineup”

He was not just suggesting it was a good matchup.

He was flat out saying they don’t have any good hitters (well, except for the guy with 20 big league AB)

I like Phil in almost any matchup the way he’s been going. I believe he’ll win and pitch well.

But I don’t believe Phil think the Mets lineup is mediocre.

I think the suggestion that it’s a “mediocre lineup” is a mediocre opinion.

  138. Jerkface May 18th, 2010 at 12:44 am

Hughes seemed to know exactly what he did wrong in the postgame, I expect good things and a continuation towards dominance for Hughes next game :x

Looks like trouble brewing if Florida between Manager Fredi Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez. Gonzalez pulled him from the game at the end of the 2nd inning for lack of effort. On a pop fly to short left, he didn’t make the catch and then kicked the ball down the left field line and then trotted after the ball. Ugly time.
