Rain keeps falling, we keep waiting

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on May 18, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It’s still raining here at Yankee Stadium. The tarp is still on the field and we’re still waiting for any sort of announcement about the game.

Based strictly on looking at the field, I would say there’s no way they can play this baseball game. But I’ve also seen a radar that’s promising and I’ve heard some speculation of a window opening around 7:30.

If I heard anything solid, I’ll post it to the blog. Until then, we’re stuck waiting.

UPDATE, 6:58 p.m.: I kid you not, the Yankees just now announced that the game will not be starting on time. Still no announced starting time.

Think I heard the same “they wont play” talk at the Detroit game…………. and they played

According to Peter, the Yankees were “furious” with Beckett in Fenway.

I guess their press quotes didn’t really line up with how they felt

    There’s a shock. ;)

is that why there was a discussion about it a few weels ago? I just thought it was blog fluff
    is he from bay area?

I’m not 100% sure, but I think he is.

  5. Patrick May 18th, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Yanks should have cancelled this game 2 hours ago. It’s wrong to drag the fans out to the stadium, delay the game then cancel it.

  6. Erin May 18th, 2010 at 6:51 pm

RT @YankeesWeather: The start time has been delayed. Once the start time information becomes available, it will be posted.

  7. LGY May 18th, 2010 at 6:53 pm

    Patrick,

The fans need to man up and take their skirts off!

  8. Tom in N.J. May 18th, 2010 at 6:53 pm

    At least an hour

    -MLB Network

  9. Trevor May 18th, 2010 at 6:53 pm

“Again, why are the Yankees insisting on playing this game? They have a zillion injuries and a very short pen……….sheesh.”

Maybe it has to do with trying to avoid Pettitte batting in CitiField? I know some have suggested that on here.

  10. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 18th, 2010 at 6:54 pm

I agree, Patrick, but they seem bound and determined to play for some reason.

  11. Doreen - From White Plains - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 18th, 2010 at 6:55 pm

It stopped raining here in White Plains. But it is pretty windy.

  12. Patrick May 18th, 2010 at 6:55 pm

I hate to say it but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yankees already know they aren’t playing this game. Just get the fans out there to buy concessions while they wait then cancel the game in an hour or two.

  13. RR May 18th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Decide something fast. It is not worth playing this waiting game

  14. Warning Track Power May 18th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

I want to get this game in.

Here’s hoping for a window of opportunity

  15. Bill from NJ May 18th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

At least an hour per MLB Network.

  16. CR9 May 18th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

    Patrick

I dont have a problem with that. More money they make, the better!

  17. LGY May 18th, 2010 at 6:57 pm

Just curious. Do the employees scheduled to work that night get paid if the game is cancelled?

Or do they just make up that missed pay day at the make up game?

  18. Warning Track Power May 18th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

    Patrick,

I would be interested to read your theory about
the assassination of JFK and the magic bullet theory

  19. CR9 May 18th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Also, the Red Sox have to fly out of NY to play somewhere, whether it be at home or on the road.

So if we keep the Sox longer, it will make them more tired.

While we get to stay home tomorrow.

  20. The Phranchise May 18th, 2010 at 6:58 pm

I had batters eye seats tonight and said no way they would play. hope i don’t have to eat those.

  21. stuckey May 18th, 2010 at 6:59 pm

“it has to do with showing people respect, as you would or should in real life. you wouldnt or shouldnt attack a person in real life, why do it over the internet?”

I’m in no way supporting this Richard clown, but this has got to be the most hypocritical thing ever posted on this blog.

All you ever do is attack people.

    It’s your thing…

  22. NYY626 May 18th, 2010 at 6:59 pm

I understand its frustrating that the Yankees wait to call the game, but you cant just say theyre doing it JUST for money purposes ( parking, concessions, etc). Joe and the players want to get this game in cause they dont want to have to play a DH later in the year or waste an off day. Bad weather happens and we just gotta deal :(

  23. Joseph May 18th, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Yanks obviously don’t care if they lose CC or someone gets hurt. Otherwise, they would have canceled the game by now.

The weather is not going to improve at all, even if it does, the rain will start again and starters will be stopped and we have to use the pen/

NOTHING good will come from today, nothing. Best we can hope for are 5 quick innings in the book (though with these 2 teams, it will take 2.5 hours to get that accomplished), with a lead, then the game is called.

They are taking an awful risk playing this game…

  24. CR9 May 18th, 2010 at 7:00 pm

    Warning Track

Im not really into conspiracies outside of the sports world, but the magic bullet theory is just ridiculous. Clearly a coverup, IMO.

  25. Erin May 18th, 2010 at 7:00 pm

It takes time for George Costanza to call all of the ticket holders and tell them the game’s rained out. ;)

  26. AZ Four May 18th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

Sox play Minnesota at home the next 2 nights.

A short plane trip up to Boston for them.

  27. stuckey May 18th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

Rescheduling a baseball game is a BIG deal. Teams by policy will exhaust all reasonable options and windows to have a game played on the date scheduled.

  28. Warning Track Power May 18th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

    CR9
    I didn’t ask you

  29. blake May 18th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

They are trying to playing this game because its rumored that Josh Beckett will melt if gotten wet. :)

  30. Patrick May 18th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

    Patrick,

I would be interested to read your theory about the assassination of JFK and the magic bullet theory

    Snape killed JFK

  31. LGY May 18th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Just expanding on my question above.

If the employees do not get paid if the game is cancelled before the gates open, it could possibly be more cost effective to cancel earlier.

If they have to pay all these employees and then cancel the game a couple hours later, they may not be turning a profit.

  32. Bill from NJ May 18th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

Per My9 — rain is tapering off, just a “patchy drizzle” expected in the Bronx as the night moves along.

  33. Warning Track Power May 18th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

if the game is not played tonight, i will be forced
    to watch alternate programming.

  34. Warning Track Power May 18th, 2010 at 7:03 pm

regarding the employees at the stadium-
i would venture to guess the are paid an hourly wage.
nobody works for free up in the bronx, LOL

  35. Al May 18th, 2010 at 7:03 pm

    Per Pete Abe -

UPDATE, 6:41 p.m.: It’s pouring now. The Yankees, meanhwhile, have four security guys standing in the monsoon guarding the field. Never mind that there’s not a living soul in the lower section of stands. Now there’s a bad job.

  36. stuckey May 18th, 2010 at 7:03 pm

“Yanks obviously don’t care if they lose CC or someone gets hurt. Otherwise, they would have canceled the game by now.

They are taking an awful risk playing this game…”

So you’re premise is the Yankees organization are just awful people acting without regard but also without any motivation for their careless decisions?

  37. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 18th, 2010 at 7:03 pm

Right, that’s why the Tigers exhausted all possibilities on that Monday (or was it Tuesday)……they could have played the game later day since it was supposed to (and did) clear up.

  38. whatever May 18th, 2010 at 7:03 pm

THERE IS NO GREEN ON THE RADAR.. THE RAIN IS MOVING AWAY, THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO START NOW.

  39. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 18th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

Wait, so is it pouring or is it tapering off?

  40. Uncle Ellsworth May 18th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

LGY pretty sure if they “clock in” they get paid for the time they are there.
there is probably a lot of setting up ect.

  41. Warning Track Power May 18th, 2010 at 7:05 pm

pete is a trader and will post anything that
    is anti-Yankees.
especially after the Thames HR last night

  42. CR9 May 18th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

    Warning Track

I know! Just wanted to get my opinion on the subject in!

What did Pete say after Thames HR?

  43. Nick in SF in Larkspur May 18th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

peta a is a trader? What is he trading? Derivitives???? It’s all his fault!!

  44. Chuck58 May 18th, 2010 at 7:07 pm

    What product does Pete trade?

  45. Chuck58 May 18th, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Hmmm trading loyalties? I think not, actually….

  46. Uncle Ellsworth May 18th, 2010 at 7:07 pm

    He trades Barbs

  47. Patrick May 18th, 2010 at 7:08 pm

    Pete trades in hamburger futures

  48. Nick in SF in Larkspur May 18th, 2010 at 7:09 pm

I wrote him off when he said he was going to give up the importing to concentrate on the exporting.

Or was it give up the exporting to concentrate on the importing? Hmmmm.

    Why not do both????????

  49. Pat M. May 18th, 2010 at 7:09 pm

lgy, Uncle Ellsworth is right, if they punch a time card they’re getting paid………..Where did this Richard the Lionheart come from ????….Ynaks are a team that has several switchitters, why can’t the LoHud ??? It is 1020, why all the hang ups ????

  50. Uncle Ellsworth May 18th, 2010 at 7:09 pm

    pork bellies

  51. Chuck58 May 18th, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Good one, Unk [and Patrick, classic reference of Snape! :-) ]

  52. Warning Track Power May 18th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Pete traded his pinstripes for some chowder.

  53. Clark May 18th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

The Tigers canceled Tuesday’s game because they wanted to rest their pen.

The rain cleared out about 1\2 hour after they called the game. They clearly did it for strategic reasons rather than the weather.

  54. whatever May 18th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

ANYONE CARE TO EXPLAIN WHY THE WEATHER CHANNEL SHOWS NO GREEN ON THE RADAR ANYWHERE CLOSE TO THE BRONX RIGHT NOW AND YET CHAD JENNINGS SAYS T IS RAINING

  55. jason May 18th, 2010 at 7:10 pm

tentative start is 8 pm according to yankees.com

  56. CR9 May 18th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Pete never wore pinstripes. He always wore his Red Sox uni to work for Lohud. Dont be fooled.

  57. LGY May 18th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

    Pat M,

Are they paid a set nightly wage or is it hourly?

  58. Jon Reremy May 18th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

I am pretty sure Pete Abe ate the sun today.

  59. Matt May 18th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

I love how all of you are so definitively sure the game is going to be canceled tonight because you looked outside your window and saw it was raining.

This game is definitely going to be played, and it is smart to try to get it in. Look at the radar and you will see that it is not supposed to rain that much between about 8 pm and 1 am. 5 hours is more than enough to get this ballgame in, and you would much rather play it now than play a doubleheader in August or September when the Red Sox are not only hotter, but when you can least afford to burn through your entire pen twice in one day.

Just because it is raining where you are doesn’t mean it is raining in the Bronx. If you are to the east of the Stadium, the weather you are seeing has already passed them, and even if you are to the west, the rain may pass north or south of the stadium. Saying “it’s raining here” means nothing about what it is doing at the Stadium, so stop throwing out ridiculous forecasts and criticisms of something you clearly know almost nothing about.

  60. Chuck58 May 18th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

Pat M., ya inadvertently answered yer own question in humorous fashion -
“why all the hangups, it’s 1020″ Nice one! :-)

  61. Erin May 18th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

BryanHoch In case you were wondering, the #Yankees won’t be starting on time tonight. But the grounds crew is coming out now to take a look.

  62. Patrick May 18th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

Are they paid a set nightly wage or is it hourly?

    hourly most likely

  63. Al May 18th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

    More Pete:

Top of the 9th: Red Sox 9, Yankees 7

Daniel Bard throws wicked hard. He fanned Thames, got Win to fly to left, walked pinch hitter Juan Mirada then struck out Jeter. The Stadium was rocking with “Lets’ go Yankees” chants and fell silent.

    lol

  64. Erin May 18th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

    New Post w/start time

  65. MTU (aka GBURL) May 18th, 2010 at 7:13 pm

    Blake-

“They are trying to playing this game because its rumored that Josh Beckett will melt if gotten wet.”

If it goes past midnight he turns into a wild texas javellina (basically a pig). ;)

  66. Corey May 18th, 2010 at 7:13 pm

I wonder what Pete said after the comeback

  67. Doreen - From White Plains - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 18th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Pete posted the same stuff when he was here re: Yankees “admin” for lack of a better word. Remember the Sedgway stuff?

I’m not clear on who has more say on cancelling a game: the home team or MLB?

And I just noticed that right outside the window where I am sitting there is a newspaper dispenser with a big label on the side: “The Journal News.” :)

  68. Nick in SF in Larkspur May 18th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

    Talented meteorologists only, please.

  69. Doreen - From White Plains - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 18th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

I am now running on reserve battery power and have to decide whether to shut down altogether or change my plum seat in order to plug in.

Think I’m going to pack up . :)
