TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m./YES Network and ESPN

UMPIRES: HP Jeff Nelson, 1B Larry Vanover, 2B Mark Carlson, 3B Angel Campos

WEATHER: Temperatures in the low 60s. There are plenty of clouds but only a very slight chance of rain.

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT: After last night’s game, the Yankees are now 0-4 in one-run games. They are the only team in the major’s without a one-run victory. They have played the fewest one-run games in the majors, with Arizona and Cleveland as the only other teams to have played fewer than eight.

UNUSUAL NIGHT: The Yankees made two costly errors last night, but they have committed only 15 this season, the second fewest in baseball. They are 21-7 in games without an error but just 4-7 when they do make a mistake. Since Joe Girardi became manager, the Yankees have a .986 fielding percentage that’s second best in the American League.

WELCOME LORI: Lori Baur will serve as the Yankees honorary bat girl tonight. She was on the field for batting practice, she’ll help deliver the lineup card to home plate and she’ll throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Lori was diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago at the age of 32. She has since been active in promoting breast cancer research and awareness.

UPDATE, 7:12 p.m.: Second pitch of the game, Jason Bartlett’s first home run of the season. It’s a quick 1-0 lead for Tampa Bay.

UPDATE, 7:30 p.m.: As Brett Gardner is picked off first base I wanted to mention that Sam and I will be chatting on Friday at 1 p.m. Stop by.

UPDATE, 7:58 p.m.: Two walks and a hit batter have Burnett on the ropes here in the third. One out and bases loaded for the hearth of the order.

UPDATE, 7:59 p.m.: And a sac fly makes it 2-0.

UPDATE, 8:26 p.m.: Things haven’t gotten much better since that lead-off homer. Burnett has allowed two singles, two doubles and a double steal this inning. He hasn’t been able to right the ship and the Rays have a 5-0 lead.

UPDATE, 8:32 p.m.: One more hit for the Rays. One more run for the Rays. Mark Melancon is now getting loose and it’s a 6-0 Tampa Bay lead.

UPDATE, 9:03 p.m.: There’s just not a lot to say about this game that doesn’t speak for itself. Burnett got through the fifth inning scoreless, and the Yankees scored a run on Cervelli’s sac fly in the fourth, but this is a 6-1 game that feels every bit like a 6-1 game. Not a lot of offense from the Yankees, not many good innings from Burnett.

UPDATE, 9:12 p.m.: Burnett’s now pitched consecutive scoreless innings, but it’s those first four innings that are making a difference.

UPDATE, 9:17 p.m.: Alex Rodriguez goes deep, pulls the Yankees within 6-2.

UPDATE, 9:23 p.m.: Seriously, this has gotten ridiculous. Thames pulled up lame on his single — he seemed to step on his own bat on the way to first — and now he’s out of the game. Ramiro Pena, the Yankees only healthy bench player, has come off the bench to pinch run.

UPDATE, 9:33 p.m.: Thames has a sprained left ankle. Pena is staying in the game to play right field. Before today’s game, the Yankees had him take extra fly balls in left and right just in case this situation presented itself. I saw Pena play center field a few times in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year and was impressed by how good he looked out there.

UPDATE, 9:46 p.m.: Ramiro Pena makes the catch for the last out of the seventh, then smiles all the way back to the dugout. Looked like Cano was joking with him on the way in. Still 6-2 Rays.

UPDATE, 10:00 p.m.: That was ruled an RBI double for Brignac, with no error on Winn who slightly bobbled the ball in left field. It was also the last pitch of the night for Boone Logan, and Mark Melancon will now give it a shot. Rays are leading 7-2.

UPDATE, 10:13 p.m.: Melancon has allowed three hits and two more runs, plus there was just an all out fist fight in the stands in left field. We’ve reached that point.

UPDATE, 10:14 p.m.: That’s new. Carlos Pena just flied out to center field, where Gardner made a terrific catch. As Gardner tumbled, though, Ben Zobrist was able to tag up and score from second base. It’s now 10-2 Rays. Melancon is getting hit. Hard.

UPDATE, 10:50 p.m.: Another pitching change for the Rays, who apparently have Joe Girardi managing for the night. The Yankees still have a long way to go, but six straight batters have reached base to pull within 10-6 with two outs and the tying run on deck.

Go, AJ! Bats are optional. :)

0-4 in 1 run games? Not so good………….

I don’t know, after the last couple of games I feel a bit out of sorts as far as the Yanks. I can’t work up that much excitement for this series given our injuries and the state of the pen. Maybe I’m just overtired, lol.

  3. Al Rivera May 19th, 2010 at 6:50 pm

Besty, pace yourself they will be okay. All they have to do is stay in the hunt until they get the injured guys back.

I believe they will because the big 2 of Tex & Project 13 are getting hot.

“Joba should not be in any big situation unless it’s clean up duty.”

    Problem.

Betsy I could be wrong but I thought when you were talking about the Sux and teams they were going to beat up on you mentioned both the Orioles and the Jays as ?bad? teams. I know that I didn?t have a lot of forum support when I was trying to say that the Jays were a good team this season. In fact I don?t know if I had any.

  6. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 6:52 pm

Trish, I’m not sure what I said during conversations about the Jays/Sox, but I thought this spring that the Jays would be ok based on their pitching. Now, they have a tendency to fall apart, but I don’t think they will this year; they’ve got the pitching and the hitting to at least hang in there.

  7. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 6:53 pm

Al, I know – and it’s a long season; it’s just the last 2 games pretty much drained me, lol

  8. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 19th, 2010 at 6:54 pm

I definitely haven’t given up on Joba and expect to see him back to form. I wouldn’t panic at all if Girardi put him in a game. But then I’m not given to panic.

    Enjoy the game all.

    GO YANKS!!!

    GO M’S!!!

    GO NATS!!!

  9. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Their hitting will fall apart. THey are last in the league in batting average and last in the league in on base percentage. They have a couple of players mashing homers early, unless you are taking the over on 40 HRs for Alex Gonzalez and Vernon Wells they will taper.

  10. m May 19th, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Betsy = way too many posts.

  11. Joe from Long Island May 19th, 2010 at 6:55 pm

Hi all ? settling in after work, ready for dinner and a ballgame ? a Yankee win, of course.

My feeling is that these nagging injuries are just that ? nagging. The guys will come back, Granderson will come back, they will play to their baseball cards, and then we will see a roll.

Guys, Randy Winn was a lost cost signing ? if Theo did it, he would be proclaimed a genius He will have a little more time to get it together, at least until Curtis comes back, maybe a bit longer. Remember, if you look at backup OFs as a commodity (as GMs do), they are a dime a dozen. (Pat M ? I hope you do not take that personally.)

  12. m May 19th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

    Betsy,

As you can probably guess, that’s not me at 6:54 pm.

  13. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 19th, 2010 at 6:57 pm

Betsy with the Jays I think the biggest surprise is the splash their offense has made and continues to make. People you wouldn’t expect to contribute have really contributed. And then Gregg has done a great job as their closer. Add that to their pitching and they are really doing a nice job. All the remains to be seen is whether they can sustain it. I’m voting yes. I’d be really happy for them if for once they could realize the promise that they seem to have each season.

They got third place like 4 years ago.

Games with the Sux are psychologically exhausting. The way the last two games went of course is draining.

I’m hoping the Twins beat the tar out of the Sux tonight and AJ manages the Rays, which I think he can do easily. I will be happy to have Wade Price, my fantasy pitcher who has done nothing for me, continue to do the same.

    Later y’all.

M, dense as I am, I figured that out…………brother, the trolls/imposters are already starting.

  19. Billy D May 19th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

“0-4 in 1 run games? Not so good…”

A little misleading. I can think of three games against Boston alone (first 2 wins of the year and the night before last) where clutch hits late in the game led them to victories by 2 runs.

  20. Nick in SF in Larkspur May 19th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

    And Sutcliffe!

  21. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

The Jays finished 2nd 4 years ago and 3rd 3 years ago. I’m not sure what promise they are fulfilling, since they aren’t going to the playoffs.

  22. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 7:03 pm

I just really want Granderson back in the lineup……..Kim Jones is chatting now (she said she’d tell Phil I said hi, lol) and said he looks good

  23. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 7:03 pm

  50. Nick in SF in Larkspur May 19th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

I see Adam Duritz several times a year. He looks pretty ridiculous with his Sideshow Bob haircut.

Trisha, people didn’t give you grief because you said the Blue Jays are good. You got grief because you told CB that calling them bad was “absurd” and that he really needed to “give it a rest.”

It’s often the style more than the subtance; sometimes both.

  51. RS May 19th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

    Shut up Kay.

  56. Ace May 19th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Quit blaming the umps. It’s juvenile.

  57. Carl May 19th, 2010 at 7:15 pm

    ESPN or Yes?

  58. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 19th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

Tom in NJ, yes and one of the reasons that they got rid of Ricciardi is that there were many seasons when it looked like the Jays were set up to do great things – and then they didn’t. The team with Gaston but without Ricciardi has a different feel. JMO

    Okay that’s it.

    Go everyone.

  59. SJ44 May 19th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

It’s not a question of blaming the umpires.

Their job is to get calls correct.

A fat umpire, too lazy to get into position, blew an easy call.

    It’s a legitimate complaint.

  60. RS May 19th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

This is ridiculous. Burnett has to throw all these extra pitches because of the blown call at second base. Pitching to Pena with a runner in scoring position is a lot different then pitching to him with the bases empty at the top of the second inning.

  61. m May 19th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

Gah! Berman talking like this is the first time he’s seen the stadium. Maybe it is. :?

  62. Triple short of a Cycle May 19th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

    Ace,

Saying the Yankees might need to concentrate on the wild card if they don’t get healthy in May is juvenile

  63. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

Nick, I don’t call it grief necessarily but I got a lot of resistance well before that for saying the Jays were a good team. But enough about that. We can always pick that up later.

Gotta switch the game on DirecTV and try to send positive vibes…

  67. Tom in Fiji May 19th, 2010 at 7:21 pm

    Michael Kay’s head is huge.

  68. RS May 19th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

  69. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

The Jays have lost 7 out of 9 to the Rays and Red Sox and have yet to play the Yankees

  70. SJ44 May 19th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Umpires are the only officials profession in professional sports that do not have weigh ins and mandatory fitness requirements.

    I’m not joking. I’m serious.

You don’t see that in the NFL, NBA, or NHL.

That’s why you see so many grossly overweight guys working games. Like Mark Carlson, tonight’s second base umpire.

Their lack of fitness creates lazy habits if not getting into proper position to make calls. That’s why they miss so many so many calls.

  75. SAS May 19th, 2010 at 7:25 pm

    gGood evening all,=

I have given this a lot of thought, and I believe the Yankees have to trade for an outfielder, DH, who is a terrific hitter and a good outfielder something like the Abreu trade a few years ago.

Just playing 3rd rate outfielders is just not enough to make up for the lack of a bat and very bad fielding. Even when Granderson returns there are only 2 decent outfielders. Swisher should be played off the bench and fill in to give rest to the both Granderson and Gardner. We have lost or almost lost a few games with the team as it is presently constituted.

We may not be able to wait for Crawford. I think the Phillies might be willing to trade Werth now for a couple of good prospects which the Yankees have. I am not familiar enough with too many other rosters to know who is there to make the trade work…so I will leave that to Cashman.

Our bench is a joke. Posada does not seem to be able to stay healthy enough to catch or even pinch hit. Swisher is at least at present in the same boat. Thames and Winn have turned out to be the jokes that many people on here said they would be. Pena is a wonderful infielder and just what we need, but when he is on the field; we lose a bat and with the outfield so weak, which makes the lineup just too short.

This is my opinion…all of you may disagree.

  85. Michelle May 19th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

April Tex needs a day off. Teams know the scouting report on him off speed pitches in the dirt. He really needs to get going. He looked good for a couple of days and now seems like he is back in his funk.

  86. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 7:30 pm

That wasn’t offspeed. Jeter and Tex struck out on 91 mph sinkers. Why they would swing when the pitch starts low (so it will finish lower) is beyond me.

They lead the league in runs scored and haven’t played with a full lineup in two weeks.

Nice inning for AJ. That’s what we’re talking about. And he can keep on doing that. Yankees should be able to manage some runs off Wade. Seriously. The Mariners grabbed three runs off him. I would think/hope we would do better than that.

One thing the Yankees are missing is an outfield arm that teams are scared to run on.

I will be in the shower. BRB

  209. m May 19th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

I don’t like this Wade Davis at all.

  210. Dylan May 19th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

    That looked pretty far inside…

  211. Joba Should Go Screw Himself May 19th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

just got ticket for Aug game vs. Sux.

  212. RS May 19th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Burnett walks a lot of batters, but he still manages to average 6-7 innings per game and put up a good ERA (around 3.70-4.00 for his career). In fact, the only time he doesn’t go past the 5th inning seems to be in those games where he completely blows up and gives up 7+ runs. It’s not like he walks the ballpark and puts a strain on the bullpen, like Dice-K or Ollie Perez.

  213. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

With this putrid lineup, Teix has to hit for them to even be a decent offense.

  214. m May 19th, 2010 at 8:09 pm

Is that Virginia Madsen in that new ABC show? She’s all…bloated.

  215. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 8:09 pm

Doreen, I hope you get out there again…….I’m going with my parents and they’ve never been, so I’m hoping they will love it as much as I do!

Yep, the Rays staff is young and awesome.

  216. Trevor May 19th, 2010 at 8:09 pm

Trying to figure out Teixeira. He has a couple of games where he looks like he’s about to get hot. Then he goes the next few games looking lost at the plate.

  217. mick May 19th, 2010 at 8:10 pm

    Why isn’t Gardner leading off??
He can’t run as much batting 2nd. Jeter is in a horrible slump.
Put him up 2nd, make him take some pitches so Gardy can run.

  218. Carl May 19th, 2010 at 8:11 pm

    Come on Jeter

  219. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 19th, 2010 at 8:11 pm

Betsy, it’s not until you go to Chicago that you realize you need to visit Chicago! Your parents will love it.

  220. Bo knows May 19th, 2010 at 8:11 pm

Boy Teixeira sure doesn’t look good. That whole approach at the plate is just bad. I’ve never seen him spoil a pitch. Not good.

  221. Trevor May 19th, 2010 at 8:11 pm

“Yep, the Rays staff is young and awesome.”

Going to cause some awesome money in a few years too.

  222. RS May 19th, 2010 at 8:11 pm

I really want to see the Yankees try Gardner at leadoff. I don’t know what they’re concerned about…Gardner has probably been a leadoff hitter most of his career and Jeter knows how to bat second.

  223. Trevor May 19th, 2010 at 8:12 pm

    cost

  224. chris May 19th, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Even Jeet’s timing is off. He could have taken that extra step to get that ball, but misjudged it. It hurts watching him fall off so bad lately.

  225. Pat M. May 19th, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Tricia, I have the Rays on the overs ( 89 wins ) for the season…..Jays over at 71……Boston under 94……Yanks over 94.5….Baltimore under 72.5 ……….Joe from Long Island, see you later. now the good Doctor has left…….Sad what’s happening here….

  226. qiantom May 19th, 2010 at 8:12 pm

  229. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 19th, 2010 at 8:13 pm

    Betsy -

A few years ago I worked for Pampered Chef and they have their annual meeting in Chicago so I went. Unfortunately there was not time to do anything on my own, and I shared the driving with another person. (I’ll never do THAT again drive out to Chicago from NJ without an overnight stop!)

  230. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Doreen, I know they will! I think it’s fantastic that they’ve got a lake in the middle of the city, lol.

Jeter will be fine. Tex? I don’t know – I’m getting bad vibes from him. As Trevor said, he has a good game or two and then…………nothing.

  231. Joba Should Go Screw Himself May 19th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

They look tired and lazy, I guess it’s time for everybody to take one or two days off.

  232. RS May 19th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

    That’s some bad luck.

  233. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

Doreen, wow – how long did that take you?

  234. JM May 19th, 2010 at 8:15 pm

Jete and Tex really have to step it up in order for the team to be competitive until the walking wounded return. Their struggles are putting too much pressure on the bottom of the line-up. Jete has looked bad for awhile. Tex, I don’t know. Hot for a game or two, then ice cold again. Strange.

  235. Matt OC, NJ May 19th, 2010 at 8:15 pm

The Yanks can start playing baseball now, they look like garbage so far.

  236. Bret the Hitman May 19th, 2010 at 8:15 pm

Jeter might play himself out of a long term deal this season. They might give him a Posada deal of 4 years.

  237. Carl May 19th, 2010 at 8:16 pm

    this is embarrassing

  238. Joba Should Go Screw Himself May 19th, 2010 at 8:16 pm

if AJ can’t go deep, this game will become ugly quick.

  239. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 8:16 pm

Jeter will be fine. Tex? I don’t know – I’m getting bad vibes from him.

You get bad vibes from Tex but not Jeter? He is swinging blind!

  240. RS May 19th, 2010 at 8:16 pm

  241. Trevor May 19th, 2010 at 8:16 pm

“Too much speed on that Rays team.”

AJ’s command is a bigger problem.

  256. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Jerkface, the vibe thing was silly, but I have utter faith in Jeter – I really do. I’m not saying Tex won’t turn it around, but he has to do it and soon…….he and Alex both have to get hot and stay hot.

  257. NYY626 May 19th, 2010 at 8:18 pm

  265. Pat M. May 19th, 2010 at 8:19 pm

If Alex is square to the bag, Upton is out…Just another case of an infieder not squaring up at the base to catch a base stealer….I hate the damn swipe tags….Jeter made that vogue

  266. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 8:19 pm

Of course AJ choosing tonight to not be so good doesn’t help……….he’s in a rough stretch now. He has to give us innings regardless as the pen is not in good shape.

  267. Smarter than you May 19th, 2010 at 8:19 pm

    # Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 8:03 pm

What has he done lately ? Led the league in walks last year and 17 WP’s

4 and 1 with a 3.3 ERA???? Which would be top 10 last year?? Walks and WPs aren’t clutch I guess??
    ————————————————————————————————————————-

What the heck is clutch about walks and WP’s ? He doesn’t have the control to win consistently is what I’m saying. Won 13 games last year. He won’t maintain anything close to that winning percentage the rest of the year.

  268. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 19th, 2010 at 8:19 pm

It’s about 14 hours. We each drove 7 hours. There was supposed to be three of us, but the third woman cancelled literally at the last minute, so we had no choice but to go (hotel reservations paid).

Mayo on a hamburger, yes or no?

  270. Joba Should Go Screw Himself May 19th, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Jeter gets free pass for everything, I mean everything, even includes not defending his teammate. He is one overrated guy.

  271. Dylan May 19th, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Of course “bad” AJ shows himself when the Yankees really need a win. The Yankees pitching has been embarrassing lately. Its funny how every pitcher (except for Pettite and CC) got cold at exactly the same time.

  272. jussayin May 19th, 2010 at 8:20 pm

    This game be over.

  273. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 8:21 pm

If AJ were pitching better, the Rays speed and youth wouldn’t be a problem, but he’s not. I venture to say he’d be pitching pretty badly against anyone else.

  274. mick May 19th, 2010 at 8:21 pm

Jeter looks weird. disinterested, unfocused. Something is wrong.

  275. MS May 19th, 2010 at 8:21 pm

This is the flattest the Yankees have looked all season long. In a huge game against a team that looks like it may win 100 games the way they are playing, they look like they could care less. This is a disgrace.

  276. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 8:21 pm

Ah so 57′Yank is also ‘Smarter than you’, good to know. Nothing is clutch about walks and WPs, but he does other things that are clutch, like not give up a lot of hits, and strike out many batters, and pitch 6+ innings on average.

  277. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 8:22 pm

This is really about not falling too far behind until the team gets healthy, unless of course, the remaining core steps up. I’m still optimistic.

  278. Matt May 19th, 2010 at 8:22 pm

This is why you cannot sit Posada and Swisher night after night if they are healthy. The team is flat when you have 3 automatic outs in a row at the bottom of the lineup, and when you continue to put up zeros offensively, the pitching is going to nibble trying to be perfect every pitch and give up runs.

Everything cascades across the roster when you baby these guys, and if they are healthy enough to play as soon as it sounds then they need to be in the lineup tonight. With all of these injuries, you can’t afford to have these guys out of the lineup if they are good enough to go. When you don’t score runs and the starters aren’t as efficient because they are nibbling, you then need to go to the pen a lot earlier which is why our entire pen is burnt out now.

Posada and Swisher being forced to sit through these injuries that it seems like they could have played through to some extent has had a huge effect on the pitching, and has cost them 2 or 3 more games on top of it due to bullpen meltdowns.

  279. m May 19th, 2010 at 8:22 pm

Not a bad result there with Bartlett.

    One more out, AJ.

  280. MH May 19th, 2010 at 8:22 pm

  283. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Dylan, prior to last night, CC had not been pitching well and Phil just had a bad game – he didn’t go cold. The pitching has not been embarrassing (well, not the SP), but they’re human. One of these days the Rays’ SP will prove to be so; if not, then they’re going to win the division.

  284. RS May 19th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Why should the Yankees be tired? They had a tough road trip, but are playing home for the 6th straight game. Half the lineup had been on the bench for most of the season, so they should be fresh, and Tex, Arod, and Jeter have all DHed recently.

  285. Michelle May 19th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

    Pathetic job by AJ tonight

  286. m May 19th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

    Or not.

AJ has to stay in. It’s 5-0, unless the bats get moving what the pitchers do won’t matter.

  287. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

“Jeter looks weird. disinterested, unfocused. Something is wrong”

He may be showing signs of age, but more likely it’s just a slow start.

The problem tonight is AJ. That’s it. Nothing else.

  288. MS May 19th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Burnett is my least favorite Yankee. Forget the pies, this man has no heart and no fire whatsoever. A man with the talent he has should be winning 5 Cy Young Awards, not crapping it up every other game.

It’s not so much the Rays look good as it is AJ looks bad tonight.

Okay so, one time through the rotation stinky and then they’ll get it out of their system.

Andy’s usually a good stopper guy, so if they end up with a split, it’ll be okay. I hate to write off a game so early, but their starter so far looks really sharp, and well, 5 runs down already in the 4th…

  295. mick May 19th, 2010 at 8:25 pm

  300. Elias_in_NH May 19th, 2010 at 8:25 pm

something about the team just doesn’t feel right in general…I think it has something to do with all of these “day-to-day” injuries…there’s just no consistency…Joba’s great in Detroit, then terrible vs. Boston. Mo’s been great, but not yesterday. Thames is awesome one night, then horrible the next. Winn is bad. Swisher is ok, then he’s hurt. Then he can sort of hit, then he can’t. Posada has been hurt. We protested a game. A.J. has been bad tonight. Jeter looks lost…Teix looks horrible, then better, then bad…I just don’t know. It seems like nothing (recently) has been consistent at all.

  301. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 8:25 pm

The yankees won’t see the Rays again until they are hopefully closer to 100%

  317. Dylan May 19th, 2010 at 8:28 pm

    Betsy,

I didn’t say the pitching staff lol. I said the pitching in general has been awful. I’m not worried about Hughes either. He is a young pitcher and is still developing. I am very worried about the bullpen though. The Yankees don’t have ONE guy outside of Mo who can really be trusted right now. Even Mo has been shaky, but I’m not really concerned about him. Considering how bad the bullpen has been, the Yankees really needed Burnett to pitch well.

  318. waka flocka May 19th, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Michelle have you watched Lackey pitch at all this season? Hes been horrible. This blog is full of overreactions on a consistent basis. I feel like its the text version of WFAN

I knew when they were saying how bad the Rays batters have been. That they were going to score at least 5 runs.

  321. Michelle May 19th, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Yanks should just leave AJ out there. Let him continue to threw his crap pitches. Instead of giving him the easy way out and bringing in the AAA guys.

  322. mick May 19th, 2010 at 8:29 pm

The injuries are catching up to them. The circular lineup is no more.

  327. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 8:29 pm

At most AJ can only go maybe 2 more innings………..at most. How many innings can Melancon go? Oh boy – the pen is just going to be ruined for the next day or two.

  328. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 8:29 pm

Melancon is up. He will be asked to pitch too many innings. He will likely struggle at some point, and he will be sent down. They have not handled him well. A pitcher with his talent needs to be handled with more care.

  329. MS May 19th, 2010 at 8:29 pm

    This is a disgrace.

  330. Matt May 19th, 2010 at 8:30 pm

We desperately needed a starter to step it up tonight and gave us innings, and Burnett has completely spit the bit. Boo hoo he doesn’t have his fastball command, how about he tries something else then instead of falling behind every hitter 3-1 doing the same thing that isn’t working?

There is no long reliever in the pen tonight, and we shouldn’t have to use the entire pen again in a losing effort. Burnett needs to suck it up and show some guts, he’s been pathetic tonight.

Leave him out there for 110 pitches and make him eat up some innings, no matter how bad he is tonight. This game is over with the joke of a lineup Girardi is comfortable putting out there to give Swisher and Co. an extra day when they are ready to go.

  331. RS May 19th, 2010 at 8:30 pm

Elias, I agree. You can also throw in the uncertainty with Vazquez getting skipped around in the rotation, and the “rotating DH”. Heck, I don’t think there’s been a GTLU winner in the past few days.

  332. Erica - always OPPC - Sesame Street Mafia and GTLU supporter May 19th, 2010 at 8:30 pm

This is where the comeback begins!!!!

  333. 57' Yank May 19th, 2010 at 8:30 pm

I will never be a fan of AJ. Sure, he has good stuff, without control of it more times than not since becoming a Yank. And it sure doesn’t matter who is catching !!!

Much the same mold as Joba. ( who I like more than him )

  334. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 19th, 2010 at 8:30 pm

It’s interesting how all you people who talk about the Yankees being “mentally weak” or individual yankees players being “mentally weak,” can’t understand that perhaps trying to do too much is taking a toll – the injuries, playing short, losing leads. It’s a bad night.

And AJ’s really not got anything tonight. Yes, the Rays on running on him, but that’s not so difficult since they’re getting on base.

    6 runs.

    Ugly.

    Tomorrow’s only 24 hours away. ;)

  335. m May 19th, 2010 at 8:30 pm

Dylan, the pen has been awful………and that puts pressure on the SP. AJ has to get through 2 more innings. If he doesn’t, then we’re going to end up burning the pen again tonight.

  338. terpbomber May 19th, 2010 at 8:31 pm

  342. JM May 19th, 2010 at 8:31 pm

Well at this time last season all the pundits were gushing about the Sox being the best team in baseball, the Yankees couldn’t beat them, etc. etc. How did that turn out?

Right now the Rays are better than the Yankees with bad AJ and only about half the starters playing. But I am not convinced they are better than the Yanks with everyone healthy and their one weakness seems to be they struggle mightily against left-handed pitching. Let’s not anoint them as the champions yet. Long way to go.

  343. Michelle May 19th, 2010 at 8:31 pm

“have you watched Lackey pitch at all this season?”
    —————————–

Lackey is much better than AJ, it’s not even close. Especially over the length of the 5 year contract they will get much more out of him.

  344. LGY May 19th, 2010 at 8:31 pm

    Michelle,

John Lackey has a 4.86 ERA right now for the Red Sox and AJ was already an integral part of a World Series team.

Where do you get this stuff from?

  345. Dylan May 19th, 2010 at 8:31 pm

This is why Burnett is a good pitcher, but not a great pitcher. Great pitchers still compete even when they don’t have their best stuff. When Burnett doesn’t have great stuff, its almost like he completely gives up and doesn’t even try to grind through it.

  346. mick May 19th, 2010 at 8:31 pm

  347. chris May 19th, 2010 at 8:32 pm

The Red Sox were in the same position as we are right now, 2 nights in a row. They came back both times. Hopefully we can do the same, or at least show an effort.

  348. Ace May 19th, 2010 at 8:32 pm

Let’s face it. We aren’t that good especially with the injuries. Cashman screwed us picking NJ over Damon. Huge mistake.

  349. Dee May 19th, 2010 at 8:33 pm

I really hope Cashman is working out a deal for a viable DH. This team cannot realistically rotate the spot for the next few months.

The RS comebacks were aided by pitiful defense. The Rays won’t do that.

  352. the gay Yankee fan May 19th, 2010 at 8:33 pm

What this game is showing is something you folks refuse you get through your thick skulls: young, fast is better than old, slow.

Every year you folks always want the Yankees to sign/trade for the biggest named aging veteran and forget their young players.

The Rays don’t do that. Anyone of their young starters are better than A.J. Burnett and they don’t cost $15 million either.

Of course none of you will learn and come next off season, it’s off to sign some other big name bopper.

  353. Elias_in_NH May 19th, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Right now the Rays are better than the Yankees with bad AJ and only about half the starters playing.
    ==================================

I agree with that…but I still think they could beat us if we were healthy…but it would be a lot closer and more of a fight…this team LOOKS mediocre and listless and disinterested right now. But I’m sure they’ll turn it around…its just so many things it seems all at once.

  354. Ace May 19th, 2010 at 8:33 pm

  355. sunny615 May 19th, 2010 at 8:33 pm

Look they win as a team and lose as a team. We’re in a bad stretch. All teams have them. We’re also playing pretty short-handed. Thankfully we have a good record to hopefully hold us for a while.

I “blame” nobody for a loss, when there is a loss. Losses happen.

Every pitcher is capable of having a bad game.

The good news is that this is a long season and hopefully we will be getting some of our injured guys back in the very near future.

Playing the Mets this weekend might be the best thing to happen to this team.

1). Excitement of the Subway series should wake them up
2). It’s a road series, but with much less travel involved
3). Playing in a NL stadium will force Girardi and management to iron out this roster, particularly the bench
4). Our #9 hitters will no longer be a disadvantage since the other team has pitchers in that spot.
5). The Mets have two lefties scheduled to pitch which means Swisher should be back in the lineup for at least 2 games of the series.

You should totally watch it online later (or now). It had Neil Patrick Harris!!!!

NPK and Shue dueted on “Dream On”. Didn’t you say once that is one of your favorite songs?

    Let’s go, Yankees. Wake up!

  423. Flash May 19th, 2010 at 8:45 pm

Last year Posada got blamed on this board any time a pitcher gave up runs. Yet this year not a single person ever would think of blaming Cervelli. Why this double standard with these two? I don’t think its the catchers fault either way but i just find this humorous that Posada was used as a scapegoat all the time last year yet Cervelli is never blamed.

1). Excitement of the Subway series should wake them up

    —-

Playing against the team in front of them for first place did not seem to wake them up, what makes you think some subway series will? The players don’t care about the subway series.

2). It’s a road series, but with much less travel involved

Going to Citifield cannot be considered traveling, even if one came all the way from Jersey.

Thames is hit or miss as a hitter, he is very streaky. Like Matsui but not as good when he is hot and much worse when cold.

That is why he is a marginal player.

Fine for a backup or something, but giving him a lot of playing time is going to hurt the yankees over who he is replacing.

I don’t understand how, when the team is losing, people decide they are “disinterested,” they’ve “given up,” etc. I really doubt the whole team has “given up” and isn’t trying to win. They are getting outplayed at the moment by a Rays team that will likely win more than 100 games and is red hot at the moment. Doesn’t mean they’re not trying to win. Sheesh, people.

They have almost identical career ERA’s, and Burnett has proven himself in the AL East while Lackey has been less than stellar so far.

Pitching in the AL West minus having to face the Angels is pretty close to being a NL pitcher. The Mariners and A’s have been just brutal with the bats over the past few years.

  534. We'll never make it, we're all doomed, Gulliver ! May 19th, 2010 at 9:12 pm

A-Rod should have pounded that 3-0 pitch down the middle…DANG IT !

  535. chris May 19th, 2010 at 9:12 pm

Alex swinging at 2 ball 4′s.

  536. talltenor May 19th, 2010 at 9:12 pm

    ALEX!!!!

  544. Also Ran May 19th, 2010 at 9:14 pm

    Can never rely on AJ

I trust Vazquez more than I do AJ. At last Vazquez has pitched in big games and has shown he can limit damage

  545. Joba Should Go Screw Himself May 19th, 2010 at 9:14 pm

A-Rod is one of very few bright spots so far

If Alex starts finding his power stroke, it wont even matter how many injuries there are…

  550. charlestonchew May 19th, 2010 at 9:14 pm

I was just thinking to myself

“Man… Arod has lost a lot of his power and his swing just isn’t as quick… man I hope he….”

    BAM!

  551. Jason May 19th, 2010 at 9:15 pm

Of course, he hits a solo HR.

Why the hell couldn’t he do that with someone on base?

  552. JM May 19th, 2010 at 9:15 pm

    Arod is locked in

  553. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 9:15 pm

With a normal lineup, they’d likely roll over them now.

  554. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 9:15 pm

A-rod and Cano should bat 2nd and 3rd, so that we have good hitters behind them

  555. We'll never make it, we're all doomed, Gulliver ! May 19th, 2010 at 9:16 pm

    OK….looking for a 3+ number on the board for this inning now….( greedy ?, yes ! )

  556. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 9:16 pm

“Why the hell couldn’t he do that with someone on base?”

Maybe because no runners have been on base when he has been up tonight?

    Glum.

  558. Eric K May 19th, 2010 at 9:16 pm

  559. We'll never make it, we're all doomed, Gulliver ! May 19th, 2010 at 9:16 pm

  573. BT May 19th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

I’m more worried about letting the Sox back in the door by losing to them last night.

After tonight, they will be 5 back of us.

If this bad play continues, they could be very close to us by the time we come back from Minny.

  574. Dylan May 19th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Um… we dont have another outfielder!

  575. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

  576. tjd - Yankees again in 2010! May 19th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

  577. We'll never make it, we're all doomed, Gulliver ! May 19th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

and now the Mighty (snicker) Miranda gets a chance to extend the inning ! ;-)

Everyone getting hurt now. Even the backups.

  579. chris May 19th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

    you’ve GOT to be kidding.

  581. Joba Should Go Screw Himself May 19th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

one word to describe how Winn tries to a fast ball: hopeless.

  582. RS May 19th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

    Oh great…

  583. CB May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

You could see that home run developing over the entire at bat. Davis couldn’t execute a pitch that Alex wasn’t on. Even the foul balls he was just off on.

Great at bat. Another great swing he put on the ball. If he keeps his front side mechanics the way they are now he’s going to have one of the best years of his career.

The rest of the team – not pretty.

But it’s still early and Davis looks like he’s nearing the end here.

Comebacks are where having the short line up really hurts.

  584. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

    OH NO!!!!

  585. Joe May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

Maybe Boone Logan can play RF now.

  586. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

Rich, even if the MRI comes out clean, he needs to be DL’d. There’s only so many holes on a team that you can plug, you know? They need a lot of help in the pen, but maybe they can get that help from the farm……..maybe. They need a bat now, period. If Tex doesn’t hit and Alex doesn’t hit (Alex has also been somewhat inconsistent) then the team isn’t going anywhere anyway. Even if Alex hits, if Tex doesn’t …..

  587. Elias_in_NH May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

stepped on his own bat. Jesus.

  588. NYY626 May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

ok, im officially worried that we have caught the Mets disease lol

  589. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

This is why even a team with a huge payroll needs a deep farm system.

  590. Yanks 21 May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

So who goes in now, Swisher?

  591. We'll never make it, we're all doomed, Gulliver ! May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

    who is hurt now ????

  592. igotid88 May 19th, 2010 at 9:20 pm

that’s what happens when you look at the play instead of just running to 1st. I’ve always brought this up when players do that.

  593. tjd - Yankees again in 2010! May 19th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

at least this injury should keep Thames out of the OF for awhile hopefully Swisher will be right be the time Thames comes back. was seriously that sick of Thames’ gaffes and awful throwing decisions.

  594. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

I missed it – what happened?

  595. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

    Betsy

Alex is at the beginning of a major roll.

  596. RS May 19th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

“Of course, he hits a solo HR.

Why the hell couldn’t he do that with someone on base?”

Maybe because Tex keeps ending innings so Arod has to leadoff?

  597. We'll never make it, we're all doomed, Gulliver ! May 19th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

    what is up ??????????????????

  598. LGY May 19th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

Someone out there really wants Juan Miranda to be the full time DH for this team.

  599. Manso May 19th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

This is like the Mets season all over again,

They were riding high last year too… took 3\4 in San Francisco, swept the Phillies, took 2\3 in Boston in late May, then injuries hit and they fell off a cliff.

We can’t withstand this forever. Now that the starters are coming back to earth, we are in trouble.

  600. UnKnown May 19th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Maybe Girardi should grab his glove and go play if he doesnt want to DL anyone and have crap laying around in the pen instead of position players.

  601. Carl May 19th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Ramiro is running right now. So we’ll see if he stays in.

  602. tjd - Yankees again in 2010! May 19th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Pena in right – at least he’ll be able to catch the ball out there.

  603. LGY May 19th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Maybe Pluto is orchestrating all of this?

  604. RalphieD (OPPC) May 19th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

if thats not the sign of bad luck, i dont know what is…how do you step on your own bat running down the line…boy oh boy

  605. Dylan May 19th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

    Betsy,

Thames stepped on his bat and hurt himself after hitting a single.

PUT POSADA AND SWISHER ON THE DL YOU IDIOT GIRARDI>>>>WE NEED ABLE BODIES

  608. chris May 19th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

igotid, then when the ball is misplayed and they’re able to take 2nd, they’re stuck at first because they weren’t watching the ball. Smart.

  609. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Wait, Thames tripped over his own bat? Was it a knee injury? Are you kidding me?

  610. CB May 19th, 2010 at 9:23 pm

The yankees recurrent desire to have two left handed pitcher to play match up baseball and their willingness to carry 13 pitchers even with heavy injuries to their position players helped cost them a game yesterday.

Once again it is going to hurt them. At best they’ll have to put Nick Swisher back in the game to play defense or desperately play Pena in RF.

Hard to believe they are unwilling to adjust the roster to account for the injuries.

More relief pitchers does not mean a better bull pen.

  611. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 9:23 pm

I can’t believe it. I dont want Thames in the field, but at this point we need him at DH. Gotta be kiddin me.

  612. Craw May 19th, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Miranda against lefties is a SCARY proposition.

At this point, I’d platoon Winn and Miranda at DH and play Golson in the OF.

If Swisher isin’t ready, then I will play Huffman in right, Golson in left, Winn at DH against righties.

  613. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 9:23 pm

  630. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

Swish is actually unavailable per Kay, so he’s not even an emergency possibility. The guy is fairly seriously hurt -and even if he’s not, he has to be be DL’d. What are the Yankees doing? They are playing with a short roster and they literally have no one to go to. What’s next, Mo in the OF?

  631. PL May 19th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

looks like torn meniscus to me…He was able to put pressure so not ACL….Ive had many a knee injury

  632. Trevor May 19th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

They need to fix this roster. If Swisher can’t play and Posada put them on the DL. You can’t keep playing short like this. Ridiculous.

  633. CB May 19th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

If Girardi does not even feel comfortable putting Swisher in to field and bat RH if needed then Swisher’s injury is likely more concerning that it first appeared.

  634. chris May 19th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

Swisher’s injury can be more serious then originally thought because the biceps tendon attaches to shoulder tendons. It happens with pitchers a lot, what starts out as a “biceps strain” or something similar quickly becomes diagnosed as a shoulder issue. That is what I am worried about.

  681. LGY May 19th, 2010 at 9:29 pm

    CB,

It really is unbelievable. Especially when you consider that under normal circumstances Thames has no business being in the OF in the first place. Yet, they have no backup in favor of having Boone Logan.

I am really convinced the only reason Logan is still around is because he is LH. Unfortunately, being LH does not give up any type of special advantage if you are just not a good pitcher.

  682. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 9:29 pm

Why would Thames throw his bat right where he is running, he hit it to the left side, they weren’t going to throw him out from LF.

It’s true the Girardi feels LHs are somehow indispensable whether they can pitch effectively or not (e.g., Marte).

But between Cash and Girardi, the roster isn’t being handled very well right now. I think there are so many injuries, they’re befuddled as to what to do.

  726. Matt May 19th, 2010 at 9:33 pm

Jeter up there pulling off a 3-1 outside fastball trying to hit a home run and grounds out to short.

What better pitch are you going to get to put your typical Jeter swing on then a 90 mph fastball on the outside corner? His approach at the plate is terrible, he’s up there either hacking at the first pitch all the time or trying to do way too much at the plate.

Enough is enough at this point. Jeter is not hitting this month, and he refuses to work the count or change his approach to get himself pitches to hit. He needs to be dropped in the lineup, maybe to 6th or 7th.

  728. CB May 19th, 2010 at 9:33 pm

“I am really convinced the only reason Logan is still around is because he is LH. ”

That’s by far the most likely reason. His performance has been poor.

He has a spot on the roster largely because he serves a process function for match up baseball based on the hand he throws with.

The bull pen struggles so they pack it with more arms even when the 13th guy has been horrible.

They did the same thing last year at times with the 13 relievers and two LH pitchers.

Watch – they’ll DL Thames and then call up one OF keeping Logan on the roster. And that will put them in the same position with Pena being the only potential back up OF.

  737. Mike May 19th, 2010 at 9:35 pm

    Trevor,

All 3 AL East teams have completely different schedules.

The Yanks and Tampa play the Houston Astros for some reason and Boston doesn’t.

Boston has 2 series with an NL East team (Philly x 2) and Tampa has 3 (ATL, FLA x 2) and we have 3 (Philly, NYM x 2).

Red Sox play 4 NL West series. Tampa and Yanks play 2.

Sox and Yanks play 2 NL West series on the road. Tampa plays 0. Tampa plays 2 NL West teams at home, we play 0. They play an NL Central team on the road, we play 0.

Such an unbalanced schedule. And the Tigers play @ Dodgers, @ Mets, Pirates, @ Braves. Just an extremely weird schedule.

I don’t believe that at all and I’ve seen no evidence for it. I know that Girardi talked about Robertson as an option to match up against LH hitters but he never used him like that this year to any extent.

Aceves is on the DL – that has nothing to do with carrying 13 pitchers or logan.

They are having problems with getting quality innings from the pen so they they are trying to address with problem of quality by carrying more pitchers and having two left handers to match up.

Pistol — hating Jeter is like hating Mo. It’s not in my DNA. Those guys have just given me too many great memories to ever turn on them.

I do hope Jeter figures out what’s going on soon. We need him. The injuries are almost laughable (NOT).

The oblique strain was in his hamstring. Which Phil injury are you talking about the one he left when pitching the no hitter? Thats the one I’m talking about

  791. Jeff NJ May 19th, 2010 at 9:45 pm

Frustrating days to be a Yankee fan. I wonder who will be DL’d and who will be called up? I guess the easy call is Golson for Thames, but we need more reinforcements than that. The Yankees will pull it together, but their mettle is being royally tested right now.

  792. CB May 19th, 2010 at 9:45 pm

“Would’ve been 5 if the ump got the 1st call right.”

Thanks. That makes all the difference in the world. 6 stolen bases is unacceptable. 5 is ok though.

Never mind the fact that even the attempt to steal speaks to the Rays game plan and belief they could disrupt Burnett by running at will on them.

They’ve had trouble with AJ in the past so they decided to try to get him out of his game by running.

And Cervelli’s presence had almost no impact on that game plan because AJ is slow to the plate.

  793. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 9:45 pm

  825. CB May 19th, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Mark Teixeira’s unwillingness or limited ability to balance his approach and go the other way on pitches is really hurting him.

His swing is designed to dead pull the ball with maximum loft and he’s having a significant amount of trouble handling anything on the outside half. He keeps rolling over on the ball.

I have no idea why he’s even swinging at a first pitch fastball over the outside half and up when he really can’t do much with that pitch right now unless he’s able to overpower it with sheer strength.

It is truly amazing that the yankees would insist on keeping Boone Logan in a 13 man roster while shortchanging themselves of any options of bench OF and bench catchers given the injuries.

Logan is horrible and despite that Girardi keeps using him for completely unclear reasons.

Why he’s on this team is a mystery. Why he was used tonight instead of Melancon is just puzzling.

What is the hold that Boone Logan has over Girardi?

If Thames is DL’d (good possibility), Huffman is the best outfield choice. He plays a solid defense at all 3 outfield spots as well as 1st base. He’s hitting with some power and he can run well enough to steal some bases.

The word is out, get to the bull pen and you got the game for sure, Yankees 4 games back.

Tampa will rule the AL East!!

  914. Devin May 19th, 2010 at 10:09 pm

Melancon is another guy that the ‘prospect huggers’ overrated.

Guy has been given numerous chances and what has he shown? He can’t even get guys out in a blowout game. And he is supposed to be trusted in close games?

  915. Bronx Jeers May 19th, 2010 at 10:09 pm

That’s the guy he throws the ball to?

  917. Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 10:09 pm

If Girardi wanted to keep it 6-2, he should never have left Logan in there. And why give Melancon an inning with RISP already????

    Its asinine the bullpen management.

Are you trying to ‘get logan going’ in a game that is only 4 run diff? Thats basically conceding.

  918. Joba Should Go Screw Himself May 19th, 2010 at 10:09 pm

    Sorry about that.

  920. CB May 19th, 2010 at 10:10 pm

As bad as the pen has been this game is on the starting pitching. AJ put them in a huge whole very quickly and didn’t give them much length.

Very poor start on a night where the team really needed him to throw well and shut down the opposition.

  921. Joba Should Go Screw Himself May 19th, 2010 at 10:10 pm

I wish some Rays players will break down, soon.

  922. Gary May 19th, 2010 at 10:10 pm

Tampa is going to run away and hide.

They play the Houston Astros this weekend.

Worry about Boston closing the gap between us. They beat Minny tonight and looks like their win over us got them on a roll.

  923. igotid88 May 19th, 2010 at 10:10 pm

    5.51

That was Mariano’s ERA in 1995, have some freakin’ patience.

Too bad Gardner can’t go back on a ball.

  934. RalphieD (OPPC) May 19th, 2010 at 10:11 pm

up by 7 runs you tag from 2nd and score…a little much?

  935. Yank 97 May 19th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

“Very poor start on a night where the team really needed him to throw well and shut down the opposition”

That is what gets lost in this. AJ needed to give us a good game today following all these injuries, burnt our bullpen, and bad loss last night and this is how he responds?

  936. Bronx Jeers May 19th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

And now I feel the need for a brushback pitch.

  937. PL May 19th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

if gardner got hurt diving for this ball then i would really be done

  938. CB May 19th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

Mark Melancon deserves a real shot up in the bigs. They yankees should given him that now given all the problems and under performance they’ve had.

That said, Mark Melancon’s arm action is awful. It really is. Watching him throw the ball does not inspire confidence.

  939. RS May 19th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

“BTW tease burnett is doing his usual. i predict 15 and 11 and about a 4.00 ERA. he is overhyped cement head player………”

Those numbers are very close to Pettitte’s career averages…don’t see what’s so terrible about it.

Besides, Burnett is on pace for a 16-8 season, and his ERA is 3.86 after two horrible outings. I’ll take it.

  940. Doris from Rego Park May 19th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

Lol- Tagging from 2nd on that up 7 runs is a slap in the face that the yanks deserve.

  941. nature boy May 19th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

where’s dallas braden? seems to me the rays are breaking some unwritten rules. bunting? tagging and scoring all the way from 2nd? this is a blowout.

  942. LGY May 19th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

    Nice catch Gardner.

But to be honest on a night like this we cannot afford you to get hurt.

  943. R+ May 19th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

    Bye Bye Melancon

Take Logan and Winn with you.

  944. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! May 19th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

True story. A 27-year-old male who was one of my ni ece’s employees at the PR firm where they work was killed the other night when a 26-year-old female with a record of 18 traffic violations ran a red light and hit him going 50-60 mph. He was on his motorcycle. He had spent the day at Block Island with his mother and brother and they were in their car behind him when it happened.

    **********************

The Yankees aren’t playing good ball right now but they’re far too good a team for it to continue a lot longer. Players will get healthy, slumping batters will start hitting, and the pen will get straightened out. Melancon is doing the best he can and he’ll get better.

    It’s only a game.

  945. SJ44 May 19th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

Can’t be patient with a guy who can’t get outs. He can’t get outs.

Finish up tonight so you don’t burn anybody else and send him back to Scranton with Logan.

He’s target practice. Like he was against the White Sox.

    Get rid of him.

  946. 7789 May 19th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

Gardner why are jumping in the air in a blowout. The yanks get afford to lose anymore outfielders.

  948. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 19th, 2010 at 10:14 pm

I’m afraid to watch our outfielders anymore. Gardner – if he didnt’ get hurt he’s lucky. And then Pena almost slides into the wall.

    Sheesh.

    What a cruddy game.

  949. Dylan May 19th, 2010 at 10:14 pm

  950. Gary May 19th, 2010 at 10:14 pm

  964. Yankee Fan in Boston May 19th, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Can we just forfeit like, the next 3 games, and let people get healthy? This team is falling apart incredibly fast.

I just noticed that Jeter is hitting .260! Two sixty! Teixeira is at .220. I haven’t been paying so much attention this year, but these are serious concerns.

  965. Doris from Rego Park May 19th, 2010 at 10:17 pm

The Rays kicked sand in the Yankees face tonight and then walked off with their girl. Then they went back and stole their lunch money, delivered an atomic wedgie and tied their underwear to the flagpole. Yanks will sit back and take it

  966. Wilson May 19th, 2010 at 10:17 pm

Nice rebound, Mark, to get that K of Gabe.

Had a rough start but he settled down nicely. I’d like to see more of him. He’s got good stuff, nice swing and miss sinker.

  967. SJ44 May 19th, 2010 at 10:18 pm

I think comparing Mark Melancon with Mariano Rivera is a “bit” of a stretch.

Bad arm action, can’t get outs. A far cry from Rivera mechanically at the same age.

His game isn’t translating from AAA.

His shot may be going by the wayside pretty quickly.

“I think comparing Mark Melancon with Mariano Rivera is a “bit” of a stretch.”

The comparison was meant to stand for the proposition that every prospect goes through an adjustment period and require patience, and that’s true.

We do not know what Melancon is at this point, and given his effectiveness in MiLB, he deserves a real shot.

Check out Albaladejo’s minor league numbers? He looks like a stud. How about Edwar’s?

Minor league numbers are not indicative of anything. Melancon has been given opportunities to get guys out and he hasn’t.

Girardi has used him in blowouts and he still can’t get outs. Gives up 3-R HR to Konerko and gets shelled tonight. He brought him in with a runner on 2nd. Even if he gives up a run, its OK. He gave up 3 and 4 hits and almost got 2 players killed.

Send him down and bring up someone who can get outs.

Inconsistent strikethrower, bad arm action, no one putaway pitch, and guys hit the ball hard off him.

    It’s not impressive.

It’s one thing if you saw plus stuff. We don’t see that, and they aren’t going to give this guy many more chances if he’s target practice at this level v

  1011. 7789 May 19th, 2010 at 10:26 pm

Man Kay is too much of a drama queen. I think Girardi is aware that you cannot get away with having a two man bench in the national league. Swisher will be ready on the friday facing a lefty. Posada might be on the DL if he isn’t ready.

  1012. Paul May 19th, 2010 at 10:26 pm

    Sox beat the Twins

Buchholz goes 8 innings, 2 runs
    Ortiz with another 2-R HR

Keep playing like this, and we will have to deal with that monster soon. Could have buried them but Joba decided he wanted this to be a close race instead. How charitable of him – saving the Sox’ season.

Why isn’t Melancon afforded the same?

1033. Smarter than you May 19th, 2010 at 10:31 pm

Melancon throws a 93-95 mph sinking fastball and has a nice curve and change.

    ————————————————————————————————————————

Why is up here, they have no problem hitting it VERY hard in almost every appearance ?

  1034. Ed May 19th, 2010 at 10:31 pm

So what is that, 5 hits in 1+ inning for this phenom?

I’d rather see Albaladejo, at least he has shown he can get people out.

  1035. Dylan May 19th, 2010 at 10:31 pm

Look Melancon obviously isn’t ready to contribute. Maybe in the future he will be a good pitcher, but right now he isn’t. Nothing is going to magically change overnight. Send him down and bring up some guys that can contribute right away.

  1036. SJ44 May 19th, 2010 at 10:31 pm

Not the best use of selective stats. A 3.86 ERA fir minimal work in NY tells us nothing.

You can quote all the scouting reports you want, for whatever reason, his stuff isn’t translating to success at the major league level.

Perhaps it will over time. Right now? It’s not.

  1037. Ace May 19th, 2010 at 10:31 pm

You see what Melancon did in that inning? Do you think he might have had a case of nerves in the 8th? Or isn’t that allowed for AAA players who are just called up?

You absolutely need to learn patience and perspective IMO

  1046. 7789 May 19th, 2010 at 10:33 pm

Melancon is a good young arm. He isn’t the team’s future closer in waiting. But he can be a solid major league reliever he needs more time.

  1047. igotid88 May 19th, 2010 at 10:33 pm

    Let’s GO Yankees!!!!!

  1048. Carl May 19th, 2010 at 10:33 pm

    hard ground ball? yeah right.

  1049. CB May 19th, 2010 at 10:33 pm

The primary concern with Melancon isn’t even the fact that he’s struggled getting outs at the major league level. Lots of young pitchers struggle and go on to excel.

The sample of opportunities Melancon has isn’t sufficient to draw any conclusions about what he might do in the future based on the results he’s accumulated so far.

And as I said before – I think he should get a shot.

But the real concern with Melancon is – and it’s not a small issues – is how he throws the ball.

He simply doesn’t throw the ball well. His arm action is ugly.

Some pitchers can overcome bad arm action and still find success. We’ll have to hope Melancon might be one of those.

But watching him throw is concerning.

How he throws the ball doesn’t correspond well to the terrific performance he’s put up in the minors to date.

And bad arm action is a difficult thing to change or adjust at the major league level.

Most young pitcher’s who at first struggle and then go on to find success have trouble initially do to their approach. They overthrow, try to be too fine, throw rather than pitch, etc.

It’s not as common that they have trouble due to the way they throw the ball and then simple get over that.

The Red Sox sent Buchholz down last year expressly because his arm action wasn’t suited for success at the major league level despite his dominance in the minors. He adjusted the way he throws and is now doing much better.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Melancon. I hope he does well but there’s reason for concern that relates to variables that are difficult for a pitcher – even a young one – to modify.

  1050. ZMAN May 19th, 2010 at 10:33 pm

“Melancon throws a 93-95 mph sinking fastball and has a nice curve and change.”

  1072. SJ44 May 19th, 2010 at 10:37 pm

    Rich,

I’m all for patience. However, I’m not blind to what I’m seeing.

I’ve watched him pitch a lot in the minors. I have no idea why his stuff isn’t translating but it’s not.

2 innings, 5 hits and 3 runs, plus several hard hit outs just isn’t good.

Couple that with his other appearances and it’s not impressive.

It may not be right or fair but, if he can’t do better in these appearances it’s hard to think he’s going to get many more chances.

He has to start showing more than this.

  1073. Dylan May 19th, 2010 at 10:37 pm

    Betsy,

Gardner made a great catch, but he had to dive backwards and fell awkwardly against the wall. He wasn’t injured though. Pena just dove for a fly ball in right field.

    Jerkface-

As I’ve said several times, Melancon should get his shot. Nowhere have I said that the sample of major league opportunities are adequate to draw conclusions as to his future performance.

But as you watch his 93mph fastball also watch how many times he misses his spot.

And he misses his spot because of his arm action.

You can get away with that in the minors. Often you can’t in the majors.

That’s all I’m saying. I’ve followed Melancon from the time he was drafted and was hoping that by now he’d be a significant contributor by now as a late inning set up guy.

But regardless of what his minor league performance has been, he doesn’t throw the ball well.

We’ll see. There’s a reason why the yankees keep sending him down to the minors so quickly and haven’t been eager to give him a real shot.

  1131. Dylan May 19th, 2010 at 10:47 pm

Why couldn’t the Yankees do this for the first 8 and 2/3 innings!

  1132. ac1 May 19th, 2010 at 10:47 pm

ok…. If they get to Winn, they HAVE TO PH winn…. I want to see CC Sabathia up as the tying run.

Why haven’t they altered his mechanics?

1136. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 19th, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Jerkface, ok – let’s not do that. However, if you were going to do that from August of 2007 and April 2008, you can keep in mind that he was rehabbing in the former and pitching hurt in the latter. The fact is, in 2007, with all of Phil’s August struggles, he ended up with very good #s for a 21 year old in the AL East. I’m not comparing the two – there is no comparison – but even then he was hard to hit. Melancon is not hard to hit, period.

  1137. RS May 19th, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Gotta give the Yankees at least credit for trying for a comeback despite the odds at this juncture.

Right now, I’d be more upset if the game ends on a first pitch swing that results in an easy out — grounder, pop up, etc. Gotta keep the inning and momentum going.

1 batter away from the tying run. Who would have thought this would happen? Just need a good AB from Miranda and we have a chance.

Wonder if Swisher would be good enough to pinch hit for Winn if they had a chance to tie it? I’d hope they would at least try this time if it came to that.

tjd another way to look at it is this. If one of the other pitchers gave up two less runs, then Melancon’s wouldn’t have done the damage.

I really have no feelings one way or the other about Melancon but I don’t think anyone can talk about his 8th inning without also talking about his 9th. Certainly better that he showed progress rather than the opposite.

  1167. WHAT ? May 19th, 2010 at 10:51 pm

  1174. SJ44 May 19th, 2010 at 10:52 pm

If Miranda reaches, I would have CC hit for Winn.

  1175. CB May 19th, 2010 at 10:52 pm

“Why haven’t they altered his mechanics?”

They did. The yankees felt that his arm action was the cause of him blowing out his elbow (despite throwing relatively few innings in college).

They tried to shorten his arm action and make him less over the top.

But there’s only so much you can change some pitcher’s arm actions.

Everyone knew that Alan Horne had horrible arm action. They tried to work on it but some guys just throw a certain way.

It’s difficult to change and often if you try you can worsen their stuff.

1176. Rich in NJ May 19th, 2010 at 10:53 pm

If Miranda gets on, CC can’t bat for Winn.

  1177. ac1 May 19th, 2010 at 10:53 pm

swisher is a big league hitter. how can he not hit righty off a righty if they need him?

    Nick, that was me

I probably shouldn’t have done that. The point is that Melancon deserves a shot, but I’m not expecting much from him; I hope I’m wrong.

    Ya’ never know !

  1196. Matt May 19th, 2010 at 10:57 pm

They NEED Swisher and Posada to play tomorrow.

Enough is enough. If these guys can’t play hurt, then the team is going to go into a huge slide with all of these injuries. You can’t baby these guys when half of your opening day lineup is out unless you want to dig yourself a decent sized hole.

They are 4 games out of first place now, and the lead in the Wild Card is shrinking. It may be early, but it can get pretty tough to bounce back if you let too many get away because you want to give Swisher an extra day off “just to be careful.” If he isn’t hurt anymore, he HAS TO PLAY.

When the team is healthy, it’s ok to do this. When so many guys are hurt, sitting these guys saps so much depth from the lineup that it makes it almost impossible for them to keep up the pressure on an opposing pitcher. Good teams will simply outslug the Yankees with the lineup they are putting out there and the state of the bullpen right now. You just cannot afford to sit these guys a single game more unless you want to be looking way up at Tampa soon.

  1197. igotid88 May 19th, 2010 at 10:58 pm

If AJ pitches to his record. We win this game. Another 6 runs scored by this team. So the offense is there.

  1198. RS May 19th, 2010 at 10:59 pm

This loss had nothing to do with Melancon. If he doesn’t give up any runs, the Yankees don’t get to face TB’s mop-up relievers. The game was lost in the fourth inning.

  1203. Carlo May 19th, 2010 at 11:02 pm

I remember a time when bloggers were claiming Melancon was the future closer of this team. Now a days, that has died down. However, everytime he gets called up it comes with the obligatory “melancon has thrown 6 straight scoreless innings for SWB strking out 12 over that span”. Then he pitches and gets destroyed. So, in conclusion, we need a tatoo artist to tatoo the letters AAAA on his forehead.

  1204. Pepitone May 19th, 2010 at 11:05 pm

Well, early in the season we know the following:

    1. Yankees bullpen stinks.

    2. Mark Texiera stinks.

    3. A.J. Burnett is consistently inconsistent.

    4. It’s only May

  1205. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 19th, 2010 at 11:09 pm
