Career vs. Yankees
TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m./YES Network and ESPN
UMPIRES: HP Jeff Nelson, 1B Larry Vanover, 2B Mark Carlson, 3B Angel Campos
WEATHER: Temperatures in the low 60s. There are plenty of clouds but only a very slight chance of rain.
TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT: After last night’s game, the Yankees are now 0-4 in one-run games. They are the only team in the major’s without a one-run victory. They have played the fewest one-run games in the majors, with Arizona and Cleveland as the only other teams to have played fewer than eight.
UNUSUAL NIGHT: The Yankees made two costly errors last night, but they have committed only 15 this season, the second fewest in baseball. They are 21-7 in games without an error but just 4-7 when they do make a mistake. Since Joe Girardi became manager, the Yankees have a .986 fielding percentage that’s second best in the American League.
WELCOME LORI: Lori Baur will serve as the Yankees honorary bat girl tonight. She was on the field for batting practice, she’ll help deliver the lineup card to home plate and she’ll throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Lori was diagnosed with breast cancer eight years ago at the age of 32. She has since been active in promoting breast cancer research and awareness.
UPDATE, 7:12 p.m.: Second pitch of the game, Jason Bartlett’s first home run of the season. It’s a quick 1-0 lead for Tampa Bay.
UPDATE, 7:30 p.m.: As Brett Gardner is picked off first base I wanted to mention that Sam and I will be chatting on Friday at 1 p.m. Stop by.
UPDATE, 7:58 p.m.: Two walks and a hit batter have Burnett on the ropes here in the third. One out and bases loaded for the hearth of the order.
UPDATE, 7:59 p.m.: And a sac fly makes it 2-0.
UPDATE, 8:26 p.m.: Things haven’t gotten much better since that lead-off homer. Burnett has allowed two singles, two doubles and a double steal this inning. He hasn’t been able to right the ship and the Rays have a 5-0 lead.
UPDATE, 8:32 p.m.: One more hit for the Rays. One more run for the Rays. Mark Melancon is now getting loose and it’s a 6-0 Tampa Bay lead.
UPDATE, 9:03 p.m.: There’s just not a lot to say about this game that doesn’t speak for itself. Burnett got through the fifth inning scoreless, and the Yankees scored a run on Cervelli’s sac fly in the fourth, but this is a 6-1 game that feels every bit like a 6-1 game. Not a lot of offense from the Yankees, not many good innings from Burnett.
UPDATE, 9:12 p.m.: Burnett’s now pitched consecutive scoreless innings, but it’s those first four innings that are making a difference.
UPDATE, 9:17 p.m.: Alex Rodriguez goes deep, pulls the Yankees within 6-2.
UPDATE, 9:23 p.m.: Seriously, this has gotten ridiculous. Thames pulled up lame on his single — he seemed to step on his own bat on the way to first — and now he’s out of the game. Ramiro Pena, the Yankees only healthy bench player, has come off the bench to pinch run.
UPDATE, 9:33 p.m.: Thames has a sprained left ankle. Pena is staying in the game to play right field. Before today’s game, the Yankees had him take extra fly balls in left and right just in case this situation presented itself. I saw Pena play center field a few times in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year and was impressed by how good he looked out there.
UPDATE, 9:46 p.m.: Ramiro Pena makes the catch for the last out of the seventh, then smiles all the way back to the dugout. Looked like Cano was joking with him on the way in. Still 6-2 Rays.
UPDATE, 10:00 p.m.: That was ruled an RBI double for Brignac, with no error on Winn who slightly bobbled the ball in left field. It was also the last pitch of the night for Boone Logan, and Mark Melancon will now give it a shot. Rays are leading 7-2.
UPDATE, 10:13 p.m.: Melancon has allowed three hits and two more runs, plus there was just an all out fist fight in the stands in left field. We’ve reached that point.
UPDATE, 10:14 p.m.: That’s new. Carlos Pena just flied out to center field, where Gardner made a terrific catch. As Gardner tumbled, though, Ben Zobrist was able to tag up and score from second base. It’s now 10-2 Rays. Melancon is getting hit. Hard.
UPDATE, 10:50 p.m.: Another pitching change for the Rays, who apparently have Joe Girardi managing for the night. The Yankees still have a long way to go, but six straight batters have reached base to pull within 10-6 with two outs and the tying run on deck.

Go, AJ! Bats are optional.
0-4 in 1 run games? Not so good………….
I don’t know, after the last couple of games I feel a bit out of sorts as far as the Yanks. I can’t work up that much excitement for this series given our injuries and the state of the pen. Maybe I’m just overtired, lol.
Besty, pace yourself they will be okay. All they have to do is stay in the hunt until they get the injured guys back.
I believe they will because the big 2 of Tex & Project 13 are getting hot.
“Joba should not be in any big situation unless it’s clean up duty.”
Problem.
Betsy I could be wrong but I thought when you were talking about the Sux and teams they were going to beat up on you mentioned both the Orioles and the Jays as ?bad? teams. I know that I didn?t have a lot of forum support when I was trying to say that the Jays were a good team this season. In fact I don?t know if I had any.
Trish, I’m not sure what I said during conversations about the Jays/Sox, but I thought this spring that the Jays would be ok based on their pitching. Now, they have a tendency to fall apart, but I don’t think they will this year; they’ve got the pitching and the hitting to at least hang in there.
Al, I know – and it’s a long season; it’s just the last 2 games pretty much drained me, lol
I definitely haven’t given up on Joba and expect to see him back to form. I wouldn’t panic at all if Girardi put him in a game. But then I’m not given to panic.
Enjoy the game all.
GO YANKS!!!
GO M’S!!!
GO NATS!!!
Their hitting will fall apart. THey are last in the league in batting average and last in the league in on base percentage. They have a couple of players mashing homers early, unless you are taking the over on 40 HRs for Alex Gonzalez and Vernon Wells they will taper.
Betsy = way too many posts.
Hi all ? settling in after work, ready for dinner and a ballgame ? a Yankee win, of course.
My feeling is that these nagging injuries are just that ? nagging. The guys will come back, Granderson will come back, they will play to their baseball cards, and then we will see a roll.
Guys, Randy Winn was a lost cost signing ? if Theo did it, he would be proclaimed a genius He will have a little more time to get it together, at least until Curtis comes back, maybe a bit longer. Remember, if you look at backup OFs as a commodity (as GMs do), they are a dime a dozen. (Pat M ? I hope you do not take that personally.)
Betsy,
As you can probably guess, that’s not me at 6:54 pm.
Betsy with the Jays I think the biggest surprise is the splash their offense has made and continues to make. People you wouldn’t expect to contribute have really contributed. And then Gregg has done a great job as their closer. Add that to their pitching and they are really doing a nice job. All the remains to be seen is whether they can sustain it. I’m voting yes. I’d be really happy for them if for once they could realize the promise that they seem to have each season.

Just heard Round Here by Counting Crows today. If Lee does that next week he wins.
I’d be really happy for them if for once they could realize the promise that they seem to have each season.

They got third place like 4 years ago.
Oh great, it’s Berman.
Games with the Sux are psychologically exhausting. The way the last two games went of course is draining.
I’m hoping the Twins beat the tar out of the Sux tonight and AJ manages the Rays, which I think he can do easily. I will be happy to have Wade Price, my fantasy pitcher who has done nothing for me, continue to do the same.
Later y’all.
M, dense as I am, I figured that out…………brother, the trolls/imposters are already starting.
“0-4 in 1 run games? Not so good…”
A little misleading. I can think of three games against Boston alone (first 2 wins of the year and the night before last) where clutch hits late in the game led them to victories by 2 runs.
And Sutcliffe!
The Jays finished 2nd 4 years ago and 3rd 3 years ago. I’m not sure what promise they are fulfilling, since they aren’t going to the playoffs.
I just really want Granderson back in the lineup……..Kim Jones is chatting now (she said she’d tell Phil I said hi, lol) and said he looks good

Mick, only because you mentioned Counting Crows in your post, Adam Duritz is one of my cousin’s son’s best friends. I’m pretty sure he’s going to be in Greg’s wedding next year – or who knows, maybe the Counting Crows will be the entertainment. It doesn’t mean a real lot to me but I know there are people who like the Counting Crows.
AJ, that’s not what we needed, lol.
YES always jinx Yankees.
Of course they had to mention that Burnett hasn’t given up a HR to a right-handed batter…right before he threw the first pitch to a right-hander.
I don’t see the point of being overwhelming positive for our divisional rival.
Shut up YES. SHUT UP!
Oh great, it’s Berman And Sutcliffe!
——————————-
You could put some Counting Crows on in the background and the crapfest will be complete.
he was out
He was out
definitly out
Replay shows he was out.
Umpires continue to suck.
Wow, that wasn’t even close. Horrible call by the ump.
We should protest the game.
He was out. Another blown call by the same crew that worked last night. It wasn’t even close.
Umpire was completely blocked out. Stupid!
I see Adam Duritz several times a year. He looks pretty ridiculous with his Sideshow Bob haircut.
Trisha, people didn’t give you grief because you said the Blue Jays are good. You got grief because you told CB that calling them bad was “absurd” and that he really needed to “give it a rest.”
It’s often the style more than the subtance; sometimes both.
Shut up Kay.
Maybe the umps didn’t get the memo that the Sox have left town.
This team needs to get healthy or we are playing for the WC
Pena turns into Babe Ruth when he faces us
game over. more cheating by the umps.
Quit blaming the umps. It’s juvenile.
ESPN or Yes?
Tom in NJ, yes and one of the reasons that they got rid of Ricciardi is that there were many seasons when it looked like the Jays were set up to do great things – and then they didn’t. The team with Gaston but without Ricciardi has a different feel. JMO
Okay that’s it.
Go everyone.
It’s not a question of blaming the umpires.
Their job is to get calls correct.
A fat umpire, too lazy to get into position, blew an easy call.
It’s a legitimate complaint.
This is ridiculous. Burnett has to throw all these extra pitches because of the blown call at second base. Pitching to Pena with a runner in scoring position is a lot different then pitching to him with the bases empty at the top of the second inning.
Gah! Berman talking like this is the first time he’s seen the stadium. Maybe it is.
Ace,
Saying the Yankees might need to concentrate on the wild card if they don’t get healthy in May is juvenile
They are poised to do great things such as: not make the playoffs, finish 3rd or worse
My wife plays “August and Everything After” constantly when she’s in the shower.
I have to fight the urge to jump out the nearest window.
They are poised to win the Canada Cup for the 6th consecutive season.
Nick, I don’t call it grief necessarily but I got a lot of resistance well before that for saying the Jays were a good team. But enough about that. We can always pick that up later.
Gotta switch the game on DirecTV and try to send positive vibes…
Michael Kay’s head is huge.
29 quality starts out of 39 games is pretty sick.
The Jays have lost 7 out of 9 to the Rays and Red Sox and have yet to play the Yankees
Umpires are the only officials profession in professional sports that do not have weigh ins and mandatory fitness requirements.
I’m not joking. I’m serious.
You don’t see that in the NFL, NBA, or NHL.
That’s why you see so many grossly overweight guys working games. Like Mark Carlson, tonight’s second base umpire.
Their lack of fitness creates lazy habits if not getting into proper position to make calls. That’s why they miss so many so many calls.

Trust me Wade Davis can be had unless he decides to turn into Cy just for the Yankees. He’s been pretty iffy as of late.
gGood evening all,=
I have given this a lot of thought, and I believe the Yankees have to trade for an outfielder, DH, who is a terrific hitter and a good outfielder something like the Abreu trade a few years ago.
Just playing 3rd rate outfielders is just not enough to make up for the lack of a bat and very bad fielding. Even when Granderson returns there are only 2 decent outfielders. Swisher should be played off the bench and fill in to give rest to the both Granderson and Gardner. We have lost or almost lost a few games with the team as it is presently constituted.
We may not be able to wait for Crawford. I think the Phillies might be willing to trade Werth now for a couple of good prospects which the Yankees have. I am not familiar enough with too many other rosters to know who is there to make the trade work…so I will leave that to Cashman.
Our bench is a joke. Posada does not seem to be able to stay healthy enough to catch or even pinch hit. Swisher is at least at present in the same boat. Thames and Winn have turned out to be the jokes that many people on here said they would be. Pena is a wonderful infielder and just what we need, but when he is on the field; we lose a bat and with the outfield so weak, which makes the lineup just too short.
This is my opinion…all of you may disagree.
Thank god yanks didn’t extend Jeter last season. Can’t decide what’s worse: his range or his hitting
Yeah baseball has the fattest umpires/refs. That one NFL ref is jacked
he balked
SJ44 – That is sad, true and funny all at once.
Or at least they called AJ for a balk for doing that his last start.
Yanks stuck in the Sargasso Sea.
This team is listless and mediocre with veterans well past their prime.
Let’s go AJ, keep it low. This ump’s calling the low strike.
April Tex needs a day off. Teams know the scouting report on him off speed pitches in the dirt. He really needs to get going. He looked good for a couple of days and now seems like he is back in his funk.
That wasn’t offspeed. Jeter and Tex struck out on 91 mph sinkers. Why they would swing when the pitch starts low (so it will finish lower) is beyond me.
Shut up about your damn radio show Mkay
mick -
I watched American Idol on dvr this afternoon after I got home. If Casey ISN’T sent packing, there’s something wrong with the world.
I get a kick out of the fact that Jeter’s an AI fan.
Jeez Louise, ump!
Yanks need Berkman to DH
Turn on the game, and the score is 0-1.
Jeter will swing at anything, so his at bat really wasn’t surprising.
Thames made a play?!

the yanks didn’t score against davis until the 4th last time they saw him..
AJ this is Hank, Hank this is AJ.
I miss the real DT; he would know what to do right now.
Rays manager pushes hard for a good start in the season, Joe Torre’s team had bad start in every season since 2000.
They lead the league in runs scored and haven’t played with a full lineup in two weeks.
Offense isn’t the problem. Injuries and the bullpen are the problem.
In all seriousness, resigning jeter to anything more than a 2 year deal will be the death of the franchise

I was doing dishes, and I missed that. Kay actually said Aj hadn’t given up a HR to a righthanded batter and then all of a sudden he did???? Sheesh. He needs to be sent packing- FAST! I’m not a “jinx” person, but it’s been too many times that he’s done that.
I guess DT means Day Trade
Needless to say I think we have some imposters here…
Like I’ve said the past two days, Berkman or bust ! Thames is really good against lefties, but not so good at all against righties. Berkman : switch hitter. Need a solid power hitting DH and a replacement for Winn. ( Winfree ?)
Nice inning for AJ. That’s what we’re talking about. And he can keep on doing that. Yankees should be able to manage some runs off Wade. Seriously. The Mariners grabbed three runs off him. I would think/hope we would do better than that.
Let’s Go Yankees!!!!
Why are the yankees striking out so much
I love when people post something and no one agrees with them so they change their name and post the same thing… sigh
Gotta keep searchin’ for reliever who can throw strikes with some heat !
I agree, Jerkface Imposter. It is perplexing why they are striking out so much.
The franchise won’t die when they re-sign Jeter nor is the second best team in baseball so far this year mediocre.
Your posts though are mediocre and lacking logic.
Like the typical sports talk radio caller.
Cervelli is the truest yankee.
Cisco is the man. I love him.
How good is Cervelli gonna be ?
The biggest fraud on this team is Joba. He would be a perfect Knick- Completely and utterly unlikeable
Good God, can these clowns give the “best team in baseball” crap a rest? The Rays have played 26 games against Baltimore, the White Sox, Oakland, KC, Seattle and Cleveland. I mean, they may end up the best team, but it’s early, and they’ve played next to nobody so far.

Enjoy the rest of the game everybody.
Betsy you are right about the Blue Jays, what really put an end to their 2009 season was the insane about of starting pitchers who went down injured….Rick Sutcliff needs a stiff drink to shut him up
The Rays are an exceptional team, Dill – it doesn’t matter who they played. It’s not their fault about the schedule – and they’ve done their job, beating teams they should be beating.
They better win this game.
The Rays are a good team, but they haven’t hit their personal speed bump yet.
See, Cervelli would have gotten a hit last night!!!!!!
My husband/daughter switched the channel for 2 seconds and we missed AJ’s top of the 2nd. That’s a good thing!
And THAT’S what I’m talking about. Wade Davis isn’t all that.
SJ, Don’t leave us alone !!!!!!!!
Pat M – I’m not sure they’ll hold up, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they do. They’re going to be good in a few years…. I guess I’m glad ESPN is blacked out in NY, lol. Oh, actually I definitely am because I hate Berman and his schtick. He’s just so annoying (even though I do like some of his nicknames)

Just a question – is AJ getting squeezed a little?
SJ had it right, Pat M – this place has become a sewer. I’m done here for the night. Hope to chat with you and the rest of the guys later.
One thing the Yankees are missing is an outfield arm that teams are scared to run on.
That run might have been scored on every right fielder, but I kind of miss anticipating close plays like that when Abreu, Melky, and Sheffield were here.
“how stupid was that bunt”
yeah, Joe is an average gutless manager.

AJ only won the most important game of the year for the yanks last year game 2 of the world series, but he hasn’t been clutch. They lose that game and the series is most likely over.

Mattingly with the walk off!!!!!

He should come back for the pie!
What is jeter swinging at
5 K’s in 2.2 IP?
What has Jeter done lately? Average is around .260
That pitch started outside and went outsider!!
Winn is like the pitcher batting 9th.
davis works incredibly fast
I love me some GGBG.

He’s been doing that the last 3 weeks
That Gardner’s turning out to be okay.
Betsy –
Have fun out there. I miss it. I want to go back for a visit.
Amazing, but true: The Rays have two pitchers on their entire staff with an ERA over 3.00. That’s unreal.
I think Gardner has only one game this year where he has looked bad at the plate. The game a few nights ago when he struck out on a couple of high fastballs.
He has been very consistent and reliable so far this season.
Dear LoHud-
I will be in the shower. BRB
I don’t like this Wade Davis at all.
That looked pretty far inside…
just got ticket for Aug game vs. Sux.
Burnett walks a lot of batters, but he still manages to average 6-7 innings per game and put up a good ERA (around 3.70-4.00 for his career). In fact, the only time he doesn’t go past the 5th inning seems to be in those games where he completely blows up and gives up 7+ runs. It’s not like he walks the ballpark and puts a strain on the bullpen, like Dice-K or Ollie Perez.
With this putrid lineup, Teix has to hit for them to even be a decent offense.
Is that Virginia Madsen in that new ABC show? She’s all…bloated.
Doreen, I hope you get out there again…….I’m going with my parents and they’ve never been, so I’m hoping they will love it as much as I do!
Yep, the Rays staff is young and awesome.
Trying to figure out Teixeira. He has a couple of games where he looks like he’s about to get hot. Then he goes the next few games looking lost at the plate.
Why isn’t Gardner leading off??
He can’t run as much batting 2nd. Jeter is in a horrible slump.
Put him up 2nd, make him take some pitches so Gardy can run.
Come on Jeter
Betsy, it’s not until you go to Chicago that you realize you need to visit Chicago!
Your parents will love it.
Boy Teixeira sure doesn’t look good. That whole approach at the plate is just bad. I’ve never seen him spoil a pitch. Not good.
“Yep, the Rays staff is young and awesome.”
Going to cause some awesome money in a few years too.
I really want to see the Yankees try Gardner at leadoff. I don’t know what they’re concerned about…Gardner has probably been a leadoff hitter most of his career and Jeter knows how to bat second.
cost
Even Jeet’s timing is off. He could have taken that extra step to get that ball, but misjudged it. It hurts watching him fall off so bad lately.
Tricia, I have the Rays on the overs ( 89 wins ) for the season…..Jays over at 71……Boston under 94……Yanks over 94.5….Baltimore under 72.5 ……….Joe from Long Island, see you later. now the good Doctor has left…….Sad what’s happening here….
Wow, jeter looks old!
Are you not entertained?
I’m about to mute the tv. They’re crying about Burrell now.
Betsy -
A few years ago I worked for Pampered Chef and they have their annual meeting in Chicago so I went. Unfortunately there was not time to do anything on my own, and I shared the driving with another person. (I’ll never do THAT again drive out to Chicago from NJ without an overnight stop!)
Doreen, I know they will! I think it’s fantastic that they’ve got a lake in the middle of the city, lol.
Jeter will be fine. Tex? I don’t know – I’m getting bad vibes from him. As Trevor said, he has a good game or two and then…………nothing.
They look tired and lazy, I guess it’s time for everybody to take one or two days off.
That’s some bad luck.
Doreen, wow – how long did that take you?
Jete and Tex really have to step it up in order for the team to be competitive until the walking wounded return. Their struggles are putting too much pressure on the bottom of the line-up. Jete has looked bad for awhile. Tex, I don’t know. Hot for a game or two, then ice cold again. Strange.
The Yanks can start playing baseball now, they look like garbage so far.
Jeter might play himself out of a long term deal this season. They might give him a Posada deal of 4 years.
this is embarrassing
if AJ can’t go deep, this game will become ugly quick.
Jeter will be fine. Tex? I don’t know – I’m getting bad vibes from him.
–
You get bad vibes from Tex but not Jeter? He is swinging blind!
This game is not going to end well, is it?
Bad job by Burnett holding runners.
They look flat, old and uninterested.
Could be a long 2 days.
Lucky and good.
Looks like someone owes Doris an aplogy
Yuck.
Game. Set. Match.
Can’t give up 4 this easily to a team this good. Rays are playing harder and deserve to beat our faces.
Whew. This game is not so great so far. Too much speed on that Rays team.
this game is gone. No comeback.
sweep.
Dear Lohud-
I am out of the shower
everything is just piling up now….this team needs an all star break….too bad where a month and a half away
So…how about those Beatles?
Cheese fries?
personally, I blame accuscore.
man they look good…
I’d say this is a wake-up call, but one team is clearly better at this point of the season.
“Too much speed on that Rays team.”
AJ’s command is a bigger problem.
Jerkface, the vibe thing was silly, but I have utter faith in Jeter – I really do. I’m not saying Tex won’t turn it around, but he has to do it and soon…….he and Alex both have to get hot and stay hot.
Anyone else praying for a rain out tomorrow? The yankees need a break. ( I may also have ulterior motives because I have plans tomorrow and will be missing Andy pitch again!!! UGGGG). But in all seriousness, they look tired.
Berman’s Captain Obvious.
This game is sooo sloppy.
Pathetic display of a baseball team tonight. Nobody on the team showed up to play. At all.
Wow, this sucks.
I’d say this is a wake-up call, but one team is clearly better at this point of the season.

you mean 1/2 a team?
Dear Lohud-

Thank you for these updates, in the future send them to my personal email .
We’re looking like the Twins usually look like against us.
If Alex is square to the bag, Upton is out…Just another case of an infieder not squaring up at the base to catch a base stealer….I hate the damn swipe tags….Jeter made that vogue
Of course AJ choosing tonight to not be so good doesn’t help……….he’s in a rough stretch now. He has to give us innings regardless as the pen is not in good shape.
# Jerkface May 19th, 2010 at 8:03 pm
What has he done lately ? Led the league in walks last year and 17 WP’s
–
4 and 1 with a 3.3 ERA???? Which would be top 10 last year?? Walks and WPs aren’t clutch I guess??
————————————————————————————————————————-
What the heck is clutch about walks and WP’s ? He doesn’t have the control to win consistently is what I’m saying. Won 13 games last year. He won’t maintain anything close to that winning percentage the rest of the year.
Betsy -
It’s about 14 hours. We each drove 7 hours. There was supposed to be three of us, but the third woman cancelled literally at the last minute, so we had no choice but to go (hotel reservations paid).
Mayo on a hamburger, yes or no?
Jeter gets free pass for everything, I mean everything, even includes not defending his teammate. He is one overrated guy.
Of course “bad” AJ shows himself when the Yankees really need a win. The Yankees pitching has been embarrassing lately. Its funny how every pitcher (except for Pettite and CC) got cold at exactly the same time.
This game be over.
If AJ were pitching better, the Rays speed and youth wouldn’t be a problem, but he’s not. I venture to say he’d be pitching pretty badly against anyone else.
Jeter looks weird. disinterested, unfocused. Something is wrong.
This is the flattest the Yankees have looked all season long. In a huge game against a team that looks like it may win 100 games the way they are playing, they look like they could care less. This is a disgrace.
Ah so 57′Yank is also ‘Smarter than you’, good to know. Nothing is clutch about walks and WPs, but he does other things that are clutch, like not give up a lot of hits, and strike out many batters, and pitch 6+ innings on average.
This is really about not falling too far behind until the team gets healthy, unless of course, the remaining core steps up. I’m still optimistic.
This is why you cannot sit Posada and Swisher night after night if they are healthy. The team is flat when you have 3 automatic outs in a row at the bottom of the lineup, and when you continue to put up zeros offensively, the pitching is going to nibble trying to be perfect every pitch and give up runs.
Everything cascades across the roster when you baby these guys, and if they are healthy enough to play as soon as it sounds then they need to be in the lineup tonight. With all of these injuries, you can’t afford to have these guys out of the lineup if they are good enough to go. When you don’t score runs and the starters aren’t as efficient because they are nibbling, you then need to go to the pen a lot earlier which is why our entire pen is burnt out now.
Posada and Swisher being forced to sit through these injuries that it seems like they could have played through to some extent has had a huge effect on the pitching, and has cost them 2 or 3 more games on top of it due to bullpen meltdowns.
Not a bad result there with Bartlett.
One more out, AJ.
The mentally weak AJ showed up tonight.
Hope for rain.
Who are the other wild card contenders?
OK, see ya; better focus on Laker game.
m May 19th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
Is that Virginia Madsen in that new ABC show? She’s all…bloated.
***********
Which show?
Dylan, prior to last night, CC had not been pitching well and Phil just had a bad game – he didn’t go cold. The pitching has not been embarrassing (well, not the SP), but they’re human. One of these days the Rays’ SP will prove to be so; if not, then they’re going to win the division.
Why should the Yankees be tired? They had a tough road trip, but are playing home for the 6th straight game. Half the lineup had been on the bench for most of the season, so they should be fresh, and Tex, Arod, and Jeter have all DHed recently.
Pathetic job by AJ tonight
Or not.
AJ has to stay in. It’s 5-0, unless the bats get moving what the pitchers do won’t matter.
“Jeter looks weird. disinterested, unfocused. Something is wrong”
He may be showing signs of age, but more likely it’s just a slow start.
The problem tonight is AJ. That’s it. Nothing else.
Burnett is my least favorite Yankee. Forget the pies, this man has no heart and no fire whatsoever. A man with the talent he has should be winning 5 Cy Young Awards, not crapping it up every other game.

Yes. And Ketchup
Free Galea! The Yanks need their HGH.
hopefully the long wait screws up Davis momentum.
So because the team is slumping, they don’t care? Unbelievable.
They look flat tonight. Not sure why. It’s not like they’re playing the Royals.
It’s not so much the Rays look good as it is AJ looks bad tonight.
Okay so, one time through the rotation stinky and then they’ll get it out of their system.
Andy’s usually a good stopper guy, so if they end up with a split, it’ll be okay. I hate to write off a game so early, but their starter so far looks really sharp, and well, 5 runs down already in the 4th…
The Stadium looks empty.
The team looks flat.
At least I’m going tomorrow and Andy the stopper is pitching.
Looks like an American Idol night.

something about the team just doesn’t feel right in general…I think it has something to do with all of these “day-to-day” injuries…there’s just no consistency…Joba’s great in Detroit, then terrible vs. Boston. Mo’s been great, but not yesterday. Thames is awesome one night, then horrible the next. Winn is bad. Swisher is ok, then he’s hurt. Then he can sort of hit, then he can’t. Posada has been hurt. We protested a game. A.J. has been bad tonight. Jeter looks lost…Teix looks horrible, then better, then bad…I just don’t know. It seems like nothing (recently) has been consistent at all.
The yankees won’t see the Rays again until they are hopefully closer to 100%
LOL Yeah, no heart at all – game 2 WS doesn’t count.
Rich, this is all on AJ so far – I agree.
This is the exact reason why I cannot stand AJ. It’s literally a coin toss every time he takes the mound. Not only that, but if the good AJ luckily shows up, he can immediately lose it all out of nowhere.
Guy is unreliable. He had a couple good games, most have been pathetic.
Do not give Longoria anything good to hit.

You’re overstating it. He’s an above average pitcher. Probably a #3. Those are hard to find. Usually, this team can hit enough to overcome any missteps, but not right now.

Betsy,
I didn’t say the pitching staff lol. I said the pitching in general has been awful. I’m not worried about Hughes either. He is a young pitcher and is still developing. I am very worried about the bullpen though. The Yankees don’t have ONE guy outside of Mo who can really be trusted right now. Even Mo has been shaky, but I’m not really concerned about him. Considering how bad the bullpen has been, the Yankees really needed Burnett to pitch well.
Michelle have you watched Lackey pitch at all this season? Hes been horrible. This blog is full of overreactions on a consistent basis. I feel like its the text version of WFAN

I knew when they were saying how bad the Rays batters have been. That they were going to score at least 5 runs.
Yanks should just leave AJ out there. Let him continue to threw his crap pitches. Instead of giving him the easy way out and bringing in the AAA guys.
===============================================
The injuries are catching up to them. The circular lineup is no more.
I rushed home from my son’s little league game for this. God I hate Thames.
And I wonder
Still I wonder
Who’ll stop the rain?
Pathetic
jeeeeeeeeze.
At most AJ can only go maybe 2 more innings………..at most. How many innings can Melancon go? Oh boy – the pen is just going to be ruined for the next day or two.
Melancon is up. He will be asked to pitch too many innings. He will likely struggle at some point, and he will be sent down. They have not handled him well. A pitcher with his talent needs to be handled with more care.
This is a disgrace.
We desperately needed a starter to step it up tonight and gave us innings, and Burnett has completely spit the bit. Boo hoo he doesn’t have his fastball command, how about he tries something else then instead of falling behind every hitter 3-1 doing the same thing that isn’t working?
There is no long reliever in the pen tonight, and we shouldn’t have to use the entire pen again in a losing effort. Burnett needs to suck it up and show some guts, he’s been pathetic tonight.
Leave him out there for 110 pitches and make him eat up some innings, no matter how bad he is tonight. This game is over with the joke of a lineup Girardi is comfortable putting out there to give Swisher and Co. an extra day when they are ready to go.
Elias, I agree. You can also throw in the uncertainty with Vazquez getting skipped around in the rotation, and the “rotating DH”. Heck, I don’t think there’s been a GTLU winner in the past few days.
This is where the comeback begins!!!!
I will never be a fan of AJ. Sure, he has good stuff, without control of it more times than not since becoming a Yank. And it sure doesn’t matter who is catching !!!
Much the same mold as Joba. ( who I like more than him )
It’s interesting how all you people who talk about the Yankees being “mentally weak” or individual yankees players being “mentally weak,” can’t understand that perhaps trying to do too much is taking a toll – the injuries, playing short, losing leads. It’s a bad night.
And AJ’s really not got anything tonight. Yes, the Rays on running on him, but that’s not so difficult since they’re getting on base.
6 runs.
Ugly.
Tomorrow’s only 24 hours away.
We might not win this game, but I’d like to see a little fight from the team.
I do not know your e-mail addy. And since you have sworn off personal relationships on a silly blog, I will never accept it because I don’t want to be an accomplice in you going against your beliefs

What have I done?!?!?
Dylan, the pen has been awful………and that puts pressure on the SP. AJ has to get through 2 more innings. If he doesn’t, then we’re going to end up burning the pen again tonight.
Didn’t think that inning was going to end…
they all look so…disinterested…
wow – i hate to say this, but this is god awful to watch. Is it AJ that’s smelling up the joint or is everyone just sleeping?
Or tomorrow night, whichever comes first.
–
I meant after this series
Well at this time last season all the pundits were gushing about the Sox being the best team in baseball, the Yankees couldn’t beat them, etc. etc. How did that turn out?
Right now the Rays are better than the Yankees with bad AJ and only about half the starters playing. But I am not convinced they are better than the Yanks with everyone healthy and their one weakness seems to be they struggle mightily against left-handed pitching. Let’s not anoint them as the champions yet. Long way to go.
“have you watched Lackey pitch at all this season?”
—————————–
Lackey is much better than AJ, it’s not even close. Especially over the length of the 5 year contract they will get much more out of him.
Michelle,
John Lackey has a 4.86 ERA right now for the Red Sox and AJ was already an integral part of a World Series team.
Where do you get this stuff from?
This is why Burnett is a good pitcher, but not a great pitcher. Great pitchers still compete even when they don’t have their best stuff. When Burnett doesn’t have great stuff, its almost like he completely gives up and doesn’t even try to grind through it.
Lee or Crystal on Idol?
Anybody?
The Red Sox were in the same position as we are right now, 2 nights in a row. They came back both times. Hopefully we can do the same, or at least show an effort.
Let’s face it. We aren’t that good especially with the injuries. Cashman screwed us picking NJ over Damon. Huge mistake.
I really hope Cashman is working out a deal for a viable DH. This team cannot realistically rotate the spot for the next few months.
Less time on the blog equals more time for actual human interaction.
See, it’s not all so bad.
Too bad people suck.
The RS comebacks were aided by pitiful defense. The Rays won’t do that.
What this game is showing is something you folks refuse you get through your thick skulls: young, fast is better than old, slow.
Every year you folks always want the Yankees to sign/trade for the biggest named aging veteran and forget their young players.
The Rays don’t do that. Anyone of their young starters are better than A.J. Burnett and they don’t cost $15 million either.
Of course none of you will learn and come next off season, it’s off to sign some other big name bopper.
Right now the Rays are better than the Yankees with bad AJ and only about half the starters playing.
==================================
I agree with that…but I still think they could beat us if we were healthy…but it would be a lot closer and more of a fight…this team LOOKS mediocre and listless and disinterested right now. But I’m sure they’ll turn it around…its just so many things it seems all at once.
We have to prove we have heart. 2009 is different than 2010
From reading the comments, it seems like the general consensus here is that the team is basically rolling over tonight. From what little I’ve seen, it’s hard to argue.

No Idol spoilers, please!!!!!!!
(or do, whatever)
Have fun chasing the Wild Card this year, Yankees. The Rays are looking like a 100 win team, maybe even 110. Way to show heart and passion in the biggest game of the year.
Look they win as a team and lose as a team. We’re in a bad stretch. All teams have them. We’re also playing pretty short-handed. Thankfully we have a good record to hopefully hold us for a while.
I “blame” nobody for a loss, when there is a loss. Losses happen.
Every pitcher is capable of having a bad game.
The good news is that this is a long season and hopefully we will be getting some of our injured guys back in the very near future.
“Let’s face it. We aren’t that good especially with the injuries. Cashman screwed us picking NJ over Damon. Huge mistake.”
Except Granderson replaced Damon, and it would ridiculous to judge that exchange on May 19th.
We should face this too. We r going for the WC

No, Matsui was replaced by NJ, and Damon would definitely be in LF over Winn. Heck. I’d put him in RF over Thames, even with his rag arm.

followed by Thames, Miranda, and Winn
Why does it always seem like we get men on base for the Thames-Miranda-Winn part of the lineup to leave stranded?!!!!!!!!!!
kay seems to be bored with this game, or himself, hard to tell..
I think Lackey is definitely better than AJ, and it has nothing to do with this outing. AJ has better stuff, but Lackey always seems to keep his team in the game. I always thought Lackey was very underrated. Although he doesn’t have elite stuff, he is a decent #1 or a very good #2 starter. I never liked facing him in the playoffs.

1). Excitement of the Subway series should wake them up
2). It’s a road series, but with much less travel involved
3). Playing in a NL stadium will force Girardi and management to iron out this roster, particularly the bench
4). Our #9 hitters will no longer be a disadvantage since the other team has pitchers in that spot.
5). The Mets have two lefties scheduled to pitch which means Swisher should be back in the lineup for at least 2 games of the series.
Michelle,
Nice job of changing the argument when that was not at all what we were talking about.
You and the gay Yankee do not seem to use a lot of your brain.
Right Michelle, but you already know Lackey is going to be worth the $$$ even though he’s off to a less than stellar start this year?
Chipping away.

Maddon is an arrogant sob, he dares thames to hit to the right side.
the other half of chipping requires AJ to start to actually pitch and keep the Rays off the bases and the board. I’ve seen nothing yet to make me think that’s going to happen.

I don’t think the Yankees get excited about the Subway Series………….I hate it.

Switch to decaf.
Posada’s foot is all messed up according to kim jones.Trust me posada & swish wan’t to play but you can’t force injured players on the field.
You are so far off on this one.

miranda goes deep this inning.
I know a comment like this makes me sound like a “bad fan”.
But I am developing some very negative thoughts about Mr. Thames
It’s funny to think that the Yankees are on pace for 100+ wins. Sure doesn’t feel like it.
Is it at all possible to get a two out hit?
Come on, Juan, we really need you to step up.
I’m getting really sick of seeing Thames and Winn at the bottom of the lineup. This team misses Swishalish a lot!

Alright. The good news is that there’s 5 more innings to play with. The bad news is there’s 5 more innings to pitch.
Let’s go, Yankees. Wake up!
Last year Posada got blamed on this board any time a pitcher gave up runs. Yet this year not a single person ever would think of blaming Cervelli. Why this double standard with these two? I don’t think its the catchers fault either way but i just find this humorous that Posada was used as a scapegoat all the time last year yet Cervelli is never blamed.
arod needs to give Miranda some lessons on putting some backspin on the ball – not top spin.
Funny how Wade Davis limits the damage but AJ can’t.
How about an inn. each for Park, Melancon, D-Rob, and Marte ?
I’ll blame Cervelli!

Good. I have been called many, many names in my life. Flat has never been one
Thames is hit or miss as a hitter, he is very streaky. Like Matsui but not as good when he is hot and much worse when cold.
That is why he is a marginal player.
Fine for a backup or something, but giving him a lot of playing time is going to hurt the yankees over who he is replacing.
Let’s see some heart
Doreen,
Ever hear the song Round Here by Counting Crows?

Erica – ahhhh Dream On??? Yes I love Aerosmith!! ( although Steven Tyler was pretty awful on Opening Day in Boston lol)
I don’t understand how, when the team is losing, people decide they are “disinterested,” they’ve “given up,” etc. I really doubt the whole team has “given up” and isn’t trying to win. They are getting outplayed at the moment by a Rays team that will likely win more than 100 games and is red hot at the moment. Doesn’t mean they’re not trying to win. Sheesh, people.

Wasn’t Glee great last night?? Super “Dream On” duet.
Thames and Miranda can hit and do a good job. But Winn is totally cooked. He has zero bat speed and swings threw every high fastball and trys to pull it. I doubt he will be on this team much longer. Golson can’t be worse than him at least he has bat speed.

I think some of the pitchers get excited for interleague play. Sabathia loves hitting, and Vazquez is supposedly good at handling the bat. Also, Rivera couldn’t resist swinging away last year.

They have almost identical career ERA’s, and Burnett has proven himself in the AL East while Lackey has been less than stellar so far.
Pitching in the AL West minus having to face the Angels is pretty close to being a NL pitcher. The Mariners and A’s have been just brutal with the bats over the past few years.

A lot is an understatement, Gardner-Granderson should be the #1-2 , or Gardner-Swisher.

Texeria’s swings are worst than they were in April. He’s lunging at the ball and using his whole body with his swings. His bat moves too much.
Yankees bats going silent against Wade Davis ?….Who the hale is Wade Davis ?…is he the Cy Young winner from a year I missed ?
We were further out at this same time last year.

AJ “WALKER”
Girardi said that he DHed Tex tonight because he could see that he needed a 1/2 day off. But he should of just gave him the night off. Then Arod tomorrow night. The guys look tired.
I’m pretty sure the Yanks haven’t settled for the wild card just yet…sure the Rays are a few games ahead but while the Yanks were playing the Tigers and Twins, the Rays were up against the likes of Seattle, Cleveland, KC…
It’s a long season. When some the team starts getting healthy and the Rays started facing some real competition, the Yanks might find themselves in first place pretty quick
If he’s not, I WILL be and that ain’t happenin’ !!!
Fantastic scoop by Juan.

=========
I believe Abreu could hit…haha
To get back in this game, the Yankees need Arod to get on base, Cano to hit a 2-run HR, Cervelli to get a double, and then Thames/Miranda to situational hit.
We can also win this game & tomorrows & only be 1 game back sending a message that we can beat them without half our starters or lose tonight, win tomorrow & be only 3 back wich is nothing.
need at least a 2 spot in this inning to show some life and get a LITTLE “back” in this game.
I’m finding myself caring less and less about this game
of course, I’m three Tanqueray and tonics in, so…
A-Rod should have pounded that 3-0 pitch down the middle…DANG IT !
Alex swinging at 2 ball 4′s.
Man, this is one brutal game…
we also can come back from 5 run down!
Gone.
wow what a shot
A glimmer of hope there.
The man.
DAYUUUM ALEX!!
ALEX!!!!
Can never rely on AJ
I trust Vazquez more than I do AJ. At last Vazquez has pitched in big games and has shown he can limit damage
A-Rod is one of very few bright spots so far
OK….that works !
Yay, good sign.
YAY-ROD haha
If Alex starts finding his power stroke, it wont even matter how many injuries there are…
I was just thinking to myself
“Man… Arod has lost a lot of his power and his swing just isn’t as quick… man I hope he….”
BAM!
Of course, he hits a solo HR.
Why the hell couldn’t he do that with someone on base?
Arod is locked in
With a normal lineup, they’d likely roll over them now.
A-rod and Cano should bat 2nd and 3rd, so that we have good hitters behind them
OK….looking for a 3+ number on the board for this inning now….( greedy ?, yes ! )
“Why the hell couldn’t he do that with someone on base?”
Maybe because no runners have been on base when he has been up tonight?
Glum.
Jason the guy in front of him is hitting like .210. That’s why he hits solo homers. Give me a break.
Although the “light” bats of Miranda/Winn are always “lurking” in the 8/9 spots….ACK !
I think Jason was being sarcastic.
We may not have fully healthy lineup for awhile – and I’m not even counting NJ.

WTH Thames ?….fast ball in the MIDDLE of the plate and you miss completely ?…..Flash in the Pan Much ????
“We may not have fully healthy lineup for awhile – and I’m not even counting NJ.”
If Po is out for a while, they have to add a bat.
Oops, I forgot the
oh no
uh oh another one down
Thames is down more injuries hooray.
Good thing Logan is here instead of Golson.
I’m more worried about letting the Sox back in the door by losing to them last night.
After tonight, they will be 5 back of us.
If this bad play continues, they could be very close to us by the time we come back from Minny.
Um… we dont have another outfielder!
I have never seen that.
great thing the Yankees put one of the hurt guys on the DL so they have someone to come in for Thames ….. OH WAIT
and now the Mighty (snicker) Miranda gets a chance to extend the inning !
Everyone getting hurt now. Even the backups.
Wow. The luck going against this team is something I’ve never seen before.
you’ve GOT to be kidding.
one word to describe how Winn tries to a fast ball: hopeless.
Oh great…
You could see that home run developing over the entire at bat. Davis couldn’t execute a pitch that Alex wasn’t on. Even the foul balls he was just off on.
Great at bat. Another great swing he put on the ball. If he keeps his front side mechanics the way they are now he’s going to have one of the best years of his career.
The rest of the team – not pretty.
But it’s still early and Davis looks like he’s nearing the end here.
Comebacks are where having the short line up really hurts.
OH NO!!!!
Maybe Boone Logan can play RF now.
Rich, even if the MRI comes out clean, he needs to be DL’d. There’s only so many holes on a team that you can plug, you know? They need a lot of help in the pen, but maybe they can get that help from the farm……..maybe. They need a bat now, period. If Tex doesn’t hit and Alex doesn’t hit (Alex has also been somewhat inconsistent) then the team isn’t going anywhere anyway. Even if Alex hits, if Tex doesn’t …..
stepped on his own bat. Jesus.
ok, im officially worried that we have caught the Mets disease lol
This is why even a team with a huge payroll needs a deep farm system.
So who goes in now, Swisher?
who is hurt now ????
that’s what happens when you look at the play instead of just running to 1st. I’ve always brought this up when players do that.
at least this injury should keep Thames out of the OF for awhile hopefully Swisher will be right be the time Thames comes back. was seriously that sick of Thames’ gaffes and awful throwing decisions.
I missed it – what happened?
Betsy
Alex is at the beginning of a major roll.
“Of course, he hits a solo HR.
Why the hell couldn’t he do that with someone on base?”
Maybe because Tex keeps ending innings so Arod has to leadoff?
what is up ??????????????????
Someone out there really wants Juan Miranda to be the full time DH for this team.
This is like the Mets season all over again,
They were riding high last year too… took 3\4 in San Francisco, swept the Phillies, took 2\3 in Boston in late May, then injuries hit and they fell off a cliff.
We can’t withstand this forever. Now that the starters are coming back to earth, we are in trouble.
Maybe Girardi should grab his glove and go play if he doesnt want to DL anyone and have crap laying around in the pen instead of position players.
Ramiro is running right now. So we’ll see if he stays in.
Pena in right – at least he’ll be able to catch the ball out there.
Maybe Pluto is orchestrating all of this?
if thats not the sign of bad luck, i dont know what is…how do you step on your own bat running down the line…boy oh boy
Betsy,
Thames stepped on his bat and hurt himself after hitting a single.

PUT POSADA AND SWISHER ON THE DL YOU IDIOT GIRARDI>>>>WE NEED ABLE BODIES
igotid, then when the ball is misplayed and they’re able to take 2nd, they’re stuck at first because they weren’t watching the ball. Smart.
Wait, Thames tripped over his own bat? Was it a knee injury? Are you kidding me?
The yankees recurrent desire to have two left handed pitcher to play match up baseball and their willingness to carry 13 pitchers even with heavy injuries to their position players helped cost them a game yesterday.
Once again it is going to hurt them. At best they’ll have to put Nick Swisher back in the game to play defense or desperately play Pena in RF.
Hard to believe they are unwilling to adjust the roster to account for the injuries.
More relief pitchers does not mean a better bull pen.
I can’t believe it. I dont want Thames in the field, but at this point we need him at DH. Gotta be kiddin me.
Miranda against lefties is a SCARY proposition.
At this point, I’d platoon Winn and Miranda at DH and play Golson in the OF.
If Swisher isin’t ready, then I will play Huffman in right, Golson in left, Winn at DH against righties.
“PUT POSADA AND SWISHER ON THE DL YOU IDIOT GIRARDI>>>>WE NEED ABLE BODIES”

You have to admit it is kind of funny that we didn’t sign Damon or Matsui partially out of injury concern, and all these other guys we bought in are getting hurt.
Dylan, where did the bat hit him? Thanks!
This is beyond unbelievable………
another 3-0 fastball RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE…..TEE it UP, DUDE !
Oh dear…
Betsy,
It looked like some kind of leg injury. Not sure if it was his knee.
Hey Juan,,,you MAY want to take the bat off your shoulder,,,,IDIOT !
Do not put Swisher in this game… we’re not coming back. Let Pena play.
If we had a lead to protect, then Swisher has to play, but we’re down 4 runs. Pena should be there.
The automatic out is up.
great now Randy Winn comes up to whiff in a big spot.
Of course Winn comes up with men on.
we might get to see CC pinch-hit later
Sweet now the inning killer Winn. This sucks having everyone hurt. Not Fun
Betsy,
He tripped over it while running down the first base line.
Okay… I’ll volunteer to play on the Yankee bench
what a roller coaster 3 days for Thames.
Swish is actually unavailable per Kay, so he’s not even an emergency possibility. The guy is fairly seriously hurt -and even if he’s not, he has to be be DL’d. What are the Yankees doing? They are playing with a short roster and they literally have no one to go to. What’s next, Mo in the OF?
looks like torn meniscus to me…He was able to put pressure so not ACL….Ive had many a knee injury
They need to fix this roster. If Swisher can’t play and Posada put them on the DL. You can’t keep playing short like this. Ridiculous.
If Girardi does not even feel comfortable putting Swisher in to field and bat RH if needed then Swisher’s injury is likely more concerning that it first appeared.
Randy Winn has the worst swing on the planet.
typical. first pitch swinging after a walk. winn is garbage.
Prove me wrong, Winn.
Right behind Pena.
Did someone put a voodoo hex on Yankee outfielders…
and the game now rests on the “shot in the dark” hands of Winn…..so helpless is he in this spot….
Winn needs to step up!
Maybe Winn will have his Bucky Dent moment, too…
It’s Winn time!
I believe!
Awesome… now Randy Winn gets to kill another rally
Worst part of Thames’ injury is it means Winn is going to hit HIGHER in the order and PLAY MORE
That is not good.

Swisher’s injury can be more serious then originally thought because the biceps tendon attaches to shoulder tendons. It happens with pitchers a lot, what starts out as a “biceps strain” or something similar quickly becomes diagnosed as a shoulder issue. That is what I am worried about.

PL, are you serious? He was limping that badly? I really have no words…….
The Yankees bullpen right now is like when the Brains invaded Futurama’s earth:
“There was a big smash up at the train home today, but don’t worry, the Mayor lady said , “We’re sending more trains!!” ‘
Just way too many guys.
Derek has been one of the worst hitters in baseball this month… .504 OPS.
He is an easier out than Pena and Winn at this point
all right, prove me wrong, captain
uh-oh !
“Golson…. my dog skip…. oscar the grouch…. who cares”
Suboptimal.
wow that was a gift
Come on Captain Clutch!
3-0!!
Take Sign no doubt 3 – 0
I HATE interleague play………..I am trying very hard not to think negatively about our pitchers getting hurt. I know CC likes to swing the bat and so does Phil, but IMO, they should just stand there and do nothing.
CB,
It really is unbelievable. Especially when you consider that under normal circumstances Thames has no business being in the OF in the first place. Yet, they have no backup in favor of having Boone Logan.
I am really convinced the only reason Logan is still around is because he is LH. Unfortunately, being LH does not give up any type of special advantage if you are just not a good pitcher.
Why would Thames throw his bat right where he is running, he hit it to the left side, they weren’t going to throw him out from LF.
Throw your bat away from you.
Really dumb mistake.
He rolled his ankle on his own bat
Rays pitcher getting squeezed for a change…..nice !
you have to be kidding me
crap
Knew it.
Jeter keeps on ending rallies.
Well that was anticlimatic.
Jeter and Teix have to do more. They can’t win otherwise.
sorry, I am right, and captain is overrated
Awful, Jeter………..
more great analysis from michael kay – seriously wondering if they’d green light Jeter.
Killer
anti-climatic to say the least…
90 mph fastball down the middle, Come on Jeter
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDGE !
With a short lineup, Jeter has to come through there. Bad job.

PL, are you serious? He was limping that badly? I really have no words…….
Yea but good news with the meniscus it can be managed with rehab you dont necessarily need to get surgery. But its going to be about a month depending on the severity.
Jeter is an epic disaster right now at the plate
Nice camerwork there YES. Way to miss the swing.
PL May 19th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
Golson…. my dog skip…. oscar the grouch…. who cares
************
Oscar T. Grouch would be stellar off the bench!!!!
Why couldn’t Alex be up?
I am so sick of Derek Jeter. He’s one of the last guy’s I’d want up there. I am really questioning if he should be re-signed.
Jeter is toast.
that would have been a DP too if they had needed it. typical jeterian groundout.
that would have been a DP too if they had needed it. typical jeterian groundout.
Jeter takes that pitch to right when he is “on”…..OFF he remains…..bummer…..game over….night, ALL !
Heck, where’s Hector Lopez ?
jeter has become the guy you dont want up in the clutch… how did that happen?
All he seems to do is ground to short these.
With all these injuries, if Jeter and Tex don’t hit, you can pitch around every hot guy in the lineup.
Still waiting for my apology
The Yankees have no business not putting Swisher on the DL. What? He says feeling better, but there is still something there? Put him on the DL and find out what that thing is.
Does 2008 Captain DP return in 2010?
It’s hard to be realistic about Jeter when so many others are borderline psychotic.
Pedroia the pedophile gets a run in there. Sad that Jeter has lost his ability the entire season so far.
Now the fake SJ is here
The Yankees interleague schedule is all over the place. They play teams in the NL East, Central and West.
Wasn’t it suppose to rotate?
Derek is cooked.
No big contract for him after this year. He is an automatic out at this point.
Stop hating on my Captain!
It just feels like Jeter is either not starting a rally or ending one. I wish he had taken more pitches to at least work a walk.
Unacceptable. Pathetic. Disgraceful job by Jeter. He HAD to get a hit there. There goes our only chance tonight.
And so grows the legend of Lance Cormier.
LGY,
It’s true the Girardi feels LHs are somehow indispensable whether they can pitch effectively or not (e.g., Marte).
But between Cash and Girardi, the roster isn’t being handled very well right now. I think there are so many injuries, they’re befuddled as to what to do.
PL, I hope you’re wrong………….A sprained left ankle for Thames. I hope it’s not a high ankle sprain
nice sprained left ankle…a few weeks and he good…Good news
Jeter up there pulling off a 3-1 outside fastball trying to hit a home run and grounds out to short.
What better pitch are you going to get to put your typical Jeter swing on then a 90 mph fastball on the outside corner? His approach at the plate is terrible, he’s up there either hacking at the first pitch all the time or trying to do way too much at the plate.
Enough is enough at this point. Jeter is not hitting this month, and he refuses to work the count or change his approach to get himself pitches to hit. He needs to be dropped in the lineup, maybe to 6th or 7th.

good call
“I am really convinced the only reason Logan is still around is because he is LH. ”
That’s by far the most likely reason. His performance has been poor.
He has a spot on the roster largely because he serves a process function for match up baseball based on the hand he throws with.
The bull pen struggles so they pack it with more arms even when the 13th guy has been horrible.
They did the same thing last year at times with the 13 relievers and two LH pitchers.
Watch – they’ll DL Thames and then call up one OF keeping Logan on the roster. And that will put them in the same position with Pena being the only potential back up OF.
Sprained ankle for Thames…
6 Cervelli
7 Miranda
8 Winn
9 Golson
L M A O ! !
So if Thames is injured, who wants to bet that the Yankees call up Royce Ring?
Sprained left ankle. Oh lord.
This is from the bad karma that Fat Slappy left when he was at the Stadium.
The Thames thing was weird – it looked like the bat just stuck in his hands – he threw it behind him but it stuck. Totally weird.
I wish Jeter hadn’t swung.
arod is really struggling on throws recently…that was a tough play but even not considering that one he has been throwing lawn darts recently
Pena going yard.
Chris — not the ENTIRE season. Jete was hot at the start.
He does look un-Jeter-like though lately.
“So if Thames is injured, who wants to bet that the Yankees call up Royce Ring?”
He can probably hit better than Winn.
Trevor,
All 3 AL East teams have completely different schedules.
The Yanks and Tampa play the Houston Astros for some reason and Boston doesn’t.
Boston has 2 series with an NL East team (Philly x 2) and Tampa has 3 (ATL, FLA x 2) and we have 3 (Philly, NYM x 2).
Red Sox play 4 NL West series. Tampa and Yanks play 2.
Sox and Yanks play 2 NL West series on the road. Tampa plays 0. Tampa plays 2 NL West teams at home, we play 0. They play an NL Central team on the road, we play 0.
Such an unbalanced schedule. And the Tigers play @ Dodgers, @ Mets, Pirates, @ Braves. Just an extremely weird schedule.
That’s not good news, PL – it’s not. They can’t afford to lose anyone now……..Cash is going to have to dip into the farm to make a trade, but I really hate to trade pitching if we could avoid it.
AJ needs to throw 125 pitches tonight ?….what the HALE is he still doing in there ? Girardi remains a Bozo !
Ralphie, that’s the dumbest statement I’ve read tonight. If you’ve been watching this season, you’d realize A-Rod has a bazooka as an arm.
when is the last time jeter hit the ball in the air?
AJ is still pitching?
His pitch count must be 500 right now.
I love Jeter….but something isn’t right. Clearly…
as a pro, he should know better how to avoid unnecessary injuries. and he fails.
Mutinous LoHudders turning on the Captain.
Those grounders right to the SS are frustrating, though. In fact, I’m working on a new curse word to describe them…
Remember – the yankees best potentially major league outfield prospect in AAA, Collin Curtis, is also hurt.
It’s really remarkable, this run of injuries to the OF. Of the top 6 OF on the organizational depth chart 4 are hurt.
AJ is still pitching?
His pitch count must be 500 right now.
============
only 111…but pretty much 500
A high ankle sprain (that’s not necessarily what Thames has) is what Phil had – that was a bad injury.
burnett will be fine. they need innings.
Chris — not the ENTIRE season. Jete was hot at the start.
–
He had 10% infield hits in April. Hit 70% ground balls, and only 12% LDs. He wasn’t hot, he was lucky.
His approach has been different from the beginning of the season.
you cannot always use ‘shxt happens’ as excuse
I’d almost rather Jeter just follow Gardner’s approach and get to 2 strikes, even if he takes pitches right down the middle.
CB,
If Robertson was functional and Aceves was healthy, Logan would have been packing weeks ago. Both those guys were like have extra lefties in the bullpen.
not turning on jeter, but making an observation.
the yanks are not going to win a lot of games if jete and tex don’t get going. and now thames is out? what a disaster. we’ve contracted New York Mets disease!
Rays will win this one 10-1….NEXT !
when was last time MJ got gurt in playoff time? never?
“Sprained left ankle for Thames. Perhaps Yanks will call up a relief pitcher, just out of habit.”
Looks like Tyler Kepner is thinking along the same line as me
would it kill them to call up montero for a cup of coffee? i know he isn’t hitting particularly well right now but he may just be getting bored. they need the offense.
Wow, AJ at 116 and counting.

I know its not good but compard to the alternative of a torn ligament I think its the best we can hope for. As far as trades I dont know. But Mr. Jermaine Dye looks pretty amazing right now
“It’s really remarkable, this run of injuries to the OF. Of the top 6 OF on the organizational depth chart 4 are hurt.”
How many are even close to being ML ready?
I’ve been accused of being too critical at times but I can’t believe all the Jeter hating tonight, enough already, are you guys nuts. How about Tex and his 182m hitting 214, it happens. That said we need to get some outfielders/dh’s or we’re in trouble. Cashman should start shopping, and soon.
that’s right….we will manage to lose a run before the game is over
there’s a guy named Burnett pitching for the Twins right now lol…grrr Sox 3 MIN 1
So AJ throws a poor game and doesn’t even keep the team in the game.
And the Rays steal 6 bases.
It’s time to stop with the silliness that somehow Cervelli is able to make pitchers pitcher better and automatically stops the opposition run game.
The Curse of Johnny Damon is real, friends.
I can’t believe the Yankees care more about having a bad lefty instead of backup OF………….

Yet that’s what has happened to this point.
don’t worry Hank, Boone will walk ya
Oops, now it’s 116 pitches.

It is pretty funny the Yankees feel the need to have 8 guys out in the bullpen, but pushed AJ to 116 pitches because Girardi is afraid to use any of those guys.

==========
It’s just that the team in general is not performing well…and that’s being nice…
and Jeter seems to be always grounding out to short or swinging at the first pitch, or striking out on horrible pitches…and since nothing’s going well right now, his shortcomings seem that much worse. I’m sure (I hope) that it’ll change…
Hot/Lucky — pretty much a wash in baseball.
–
If you’re crushing liners everywhere, I’d say thats hot. Jeter is not crushing the ball. Even Austin JAckson atleast had a 30% line drive rate at the beginning of the season.

Would’ve been 5 if the ump got the 1st call right.
“If Robertson was functional and Aceves was healthy, Logan would have been packing weeks ago. Both those guys were like have extra lefties in the bullpen.”
I don’t believe that at all and I’ve seen no evidence for it. I know that Girardi talked about Robertson as an option to match up against LH hitters but he never used him like that this year to any extent.
Aceves is on the DL – that has nothing to do with carrying 13 pitchers or logan.
They are having problems with getting quality innings from the pen so they they are trying to address with problem of quality by carrying more pitchers and having two left handers to match up.
They did similar things last year.
PL, he had a grade 3 sprain – I think that’s the worst. I never heard of an oblique sprain of the ankle? Then again, I never heard of a high ankle sprain either, lol.
Things are getting so bad, I’m even thinking negatively about Phil, lol.
too about thames. couldn’t play the outfield but he could hit. he may be gone awhile.
“Rays will win this one 10-1….NEXT !”
Wait, the Yankees are going to give back a run?
well, i need to get a snack….and since Logan is coming on, when I get back the score will probably be 143-2 TB.
too “bad” about thames
“It is pretty funny the Yankees feel the need to have 8 guys out in the bullpen, but pushed AJ to 116 pitches because Girardi is afraid to use any of those guys.”
Do you presume to know more than the Binder?
Boone Logan
Hard to believe AJ lasted as long as he did.
Pistol — hating Jeter is like hating Mo. It’s not in my DNA. Those guys have just given me too many great memories to ever turn on them.
I do hope Jeter figures out what’s going on soon. We need him. The injuries are almost laughable (NOT).
Lets rally Yanks!
OK, enough fooling around. Time to rally.
best part of the lineup coming up. hopefully there’s 2 men on when Alex comes to bat.
Betsy – Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth)
The oblique strain was in his hamstring. Which Phil injury are you talking about the one he left when pitching the no hitter? Thats the one I’m talking about
Frustrating days to be a Yankee fan. I wonder who will be DL’d and who will be called up? I guess the easy call is Golson for Thames, but we need more reinforcements than that. The Yankees will pull it together, but their mettle is being royally tested right now.
“Would’ve been 5 if the ump got the 1st call right.”
Thanks. That makes all the difference in the world. 6 stolen bases is unacceptable. 5 is ok though.
Never mind the fact that even the attempt to steal speaks to the Rays game plan and belief they could disrupt Burnett by running at will on them.
They’ve had trouble with AJ in the past so they decided to try to get him out of his game by running.
And Cervelli’s presence had almost no impact on that game plan because AJ is slow to the plate.
Phil rolled an ankle when he was rehabbing the hamstring he pulled in Texas while pitching a no hitter.
“Do you presume to know more than the Binder?”
Great line.
I don’t want to fuel any more of the ridiculous Red Sox/ESPN/media conspiracy theories we usually get around here, but since CR9 appears to be elsewhere this evening, I think now would be a good time to reveal that I might have just blown the lid off of a massive Red Sox ESPN media conspiracy:

Sigh Tex
Gardner tried to pull off an Ichiro. He was planning on turning on the pitch and trying to jerk the ball to the short left field porch.
Tex is really getting embarassing
go the other way tex cmon
Tex has been awful today.
When u field a lineup with 5 legit hitters u can’t win
come on.
Tex is one of the most overrated players in baseball
He ain’t getting to 30/120 this year. He is going to have a down down year.

no…i watch every game buddy….arod has a tremendous arm, there is no doubt about that….but he has thrown a lot of balls into the dirt recently….
Not a strike.
Wouldn’t Tex be a lil better with Damon in front of him?
Triple play at Citi Field
Watch, they don’t DL Thames… he will be “day to day” and we will play another man short. We will play with a 18 man roster.
that was so low. Ump waits for the catcher to bring the ball up then call it strike 3
We should get used to this because our SP will come back to earth quick
Why do I get the feeling we are going to get spammed by hoards of Red Sox trolls for days to come?
Mark Teixeira’s unwillingness or limited ability to balance his approach and go the other way on pitches is really hurting him.
His swing is designed to dead pull the ball with maximum loft and he’s having a significant amount of trouble handling anything on the outside half. He keeps rolling over on the ball.
I have no idea why he’s even swinging at a first pitch fastball over the outside half and up when he really can’t do much with that pitch right now unless he’s able to overpower it with sheer strength.
Let’s focus on the WC. TB is too tough
The starting pitching will get better because Vazquez will be better.
Mike.
Because he had a bad game? You have got to be kidding me! He had about as bad an April as a player can have, and he is still on pace to hit 28 HRs and 122 RBIs.
I hope Boone walks 2 people in a row. Just because it would seem right.
Logan needs to be in Scranton
Are there any FA shortstops out there for 2011? Move arod to SS and find a 3B for next season

Something to monitor.

Nice job against the lefty Boone. Good grief.
The Rays schedule so far this season compared to the Yankees has been a joke. As long as the Yankees stay within striking distance they are in good shape.
This game is in all likelihood over.
Let’s talk about Gardner…
Do you think he can hit for power? I mean, anything from 10-20 homeruns this year?
How do u walk the leadoff guy down 4 in the 8th? Unreal
Boone walked the leadoff batter? Shocker!
Why is this clown with a 1.80 WHIP continuing to get into games?
Boone Logan everybody.
Logan………grrrrrrrr
So I’m a Sox fan because I face reality. Good one chris
Get Logan and Winn off this team now.
Logan is terrible man.
Classic Logan… Seriously though what does this guy have to do to lose his roster spot?
gay, no. not even close. he’s not a power guy, nor do we want him to be. it’s not the player he is.
Winn is worthless even in the OF
Tex has to be able to go the other way he is a better hitter than that.
Winn was supposed to be a good defensive player, but he is terrible out there. He can’t hit, he can’t field, he can’t run, he can’t throw. Anyone could probably contribute more than him right now.
Boone sucks. You’ve got to be kidding me.
Who wants Logan in Scranton?
man we gave up Melky Cabrera for this clown

How does this even make sense?? Wouldnt you be looking for a FA 3B then?
So do the yanks tie up 20% of their payroll for the next 5 years with jeter?
This has been hideous
The fact is..we should be on a 5 game winning streak
This would break the streak, and would be suck, but still..we’d be pretty happy and confident going into tomorrow’s game.
This team is listless, sad, and embarassing. No more 1 game of the season..we looked like absolute GARBAGE tonight.
Winn and Logan need to go. Doesn’t take Branch Rickey.
If this race becomes close again with Boston or Tampa runs away from us, we have Joba to thank.
2 games that were in the bag, he blew.
Will that be the last we see of Boone Logan?
Logan = Sean Henn
No control & 94 mph batting practice
I feel like I’m with the bleacher creatures singing the “everybody sucks” chant.
Yankees baseball…boone sucks, winn sucks, mets suck, boston sucks, everybody (except Tamps) sucks.
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalt
Phil Coke I miss u
It is truly amazing that the yankees would insist on keeping Boone Logan in a 13 man roster while shortchanging themselves of any options of bench OF and bench catchers given the injuries.
Logan is horrible and despite that Girardi keeps using him for completely unclear reasons.
Why he’s on this team is a mystery. Why he was used tonight instead of Melancon is just puzzling.
What is the hold that Boone Logan has over Girardi?
Bronx Jeers, that’s frightening and worrying, and also scary.
I’m afraid you’re on to something.
Cash and Girardi apparently want these guys on the team just to hurt them. They’ve done not ONE positive thing ALL YEAR, yet they’re still on the team. I just don’t understand any ounce of logic in that whatsoever.
CB, Texeria is starting to press, and some of the other guys are too….Trying to take on to much , injuries…Any word on Marcus ?????
If Thames is DL’d (good possibility), Huffman is the best outfield choice. He plays a solid defense at all 3 outfield spots as well as 1st base. He’s hitting with some power and he can run well enough to steal some bases.
You couldn’t give Melancon a clean inning to work with Joe?
It was that important in a 6-2 game to matchup Logan?
The only way u sign Jeter is if u don’t care about $
Time to see what Melancon is made of.
I didn’t like Coke because he gave up some bombs, but he would put the ball over the plate against lefties.
I assume Joe is using him tonight because he does’t want to waste relievers, but it is like he’s throwing up the white flag. Who makes roster decisions, Joe or Cash? Joe, right?
Cody Ransom probably passed some dirt on Girardi to Boone Logan.
Let’s give cashman exec of yr. Thames winn park NJ. Vazquez. Logan. Wow
Randy Winn, you’re killing me buddy ……
Goodbye Logan, he just punched his bus ticket back to Scranton.
Once we get 2 of Granderson, Swisher, or Posada back we will be straight.
for the 10 games from Twins series to the weekend mets series, I would be happy for 6-4 record. They got 3 wins so far, 3 more to go.
Ok I can turn this off

See, Ace. Only a RS fan or someone trying to bug others on the forum would say stuff like that. You’ve only had comments such as that all night long. You really sound like an 11 year old dunce.
Fear and Loathing on the LoHud Yankee Blog.
Hey look- Melancon still sucks!
Pat M.-
I agree Tex is pressing – that’s why I brought up him swinging at an outside pitch – a location he’s had a lot of trouble squaring up.
But a dead pull hitter pressing is just going to make a high volume of easy outs. And tex just keeps rolling over on the ball.
Marte n Logan make Coke look awesome
Cashman really got exposed this season.
Awful off-season moves and he raided us of depth this winter and failed to replenish it.
We’re going to slide back to the pack in the AL East.
They’re likely in love with Boone Logan’s stuff. More than anything else. We saw something similar with Jose Veras last year. Took them a couple of months to realize he sucked.
Hey Chris yell us something positive right now. We r all ears
lol @ Melancon
This is the guy people said was the future closer?
He sucks. Back down to Scranton tomorrow for Royce Ring.
Tex is batting .293 vs lefties.
.180 vs righties. His left handed swing is a mess.
What is Sidney Ponson or Shaun Chacon up to these days?
I forgot how much the regulars in here love Melancon who is really no better than Edwar Ramirez. Coincidentally, I bought some papaya’s from Edwar yesterday right off the BQE
why the love affair with logan, he sucks. he is good for at least 1 walk per inning. send the piece of crap down.,…………………….

This bullpen is dreadful. Robertson has put like 9 runners on base in his last 3 appearances. Still don’t trust Park. Marte is hit or miss. Joba is unreliable.
No idea where Joe goes in close games.
Melancon is not exactly doing well……….

Zobrist went oppo nicely, but his single was a grounder through the hole and that batter advanced on a terrible throw to home that shouldn’t have been made.
this game is dreadful. hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow….if we put all 17 of our injured guys on the DL…
The word is out, get to the bull pen and you got the game for sure, Yankees 4 games back.

Melancon is another guy that the ‘prospect huggers’ overrated.

O my god this episode is so great. Enjoy it
If Girardi wanted to keep it 6-2, he should never have left Logan in there. And why give Melancon an inning with RISP already????
Its asinine the bullpen management.
Are you trying to ‘get logan going’ in a game that is only 4 run diff? Thats basically conceding.
at least Lakers should have easy win tonight
this one’s from March.
Sorry about that.
As bad as the pen has been this game is on the starting pitching. AJ put them in a huge whole very quickly and didn’t give them much length.
Very poor start on a night where the team really needed him to throw well and shut down the opposition.
I wish some Rays players will break down, soon.
Tampa is going to run away and hide.
They play the Houston Astros this weekend.
Worry about Boston closing the gap between us. They beat Minny tonight and looks like their win over us got them on a roll.
I was really hoping Melancon would start doing well.
Nova and Sanchez really need to get extended looks.
I feel like I’m back in Hayden Planetarium listening to Dark Side of the Moon.
AJ put them in a huge whole very quickly and didn’t give them much length.
–
He went into the 7th????? Thats great! 6 runs, not so much.
OMG BG
Gardner is INSANE
trust me, Rays won’t run away and hide.
damn
WOW!!!!
I’d give Melancon a chance. Maybe 1-2 weeks.
Impressive play by Zobrist right there.
“Melancon is another guy that the ‘prospect huggers’ overrated.”
5.51
That was Mariano’s ERA in 1995, have some freakin’ patience.
Too bad Gardner can’t go back on a ball.
up by 7 runs you tag from 2nd and score…a little much?
“Very poor start on a night where the team really needed him to throw well and shut down the opposition”
That is what gets lost in this. AJ needed to give us a good game today following all these injuries, burnt our bullpen, and bad loss last night and this is how he responds?
And now I feel the need for a brushback pitch.
if gardner got hurt diving for this ball then i would really be done
Mark Melancon deserves a real shot up in the bigs. They yankees should given him that now given all the problems and under performance they’ve had.
That said, Mark Melancon’s arm action is awful. It really is. Watching him throw the ball does not inspire confidence.
“BTW tease burnett is doing his usual. i predict 15 and 11 and about a 4.00 ERA. he is overhyped cement head player………”
Those numbers are very close to Pettitte’s career averages…don’t see what’s so terrible about it.
Besides, Burnett is on pace for a 16-8 season, and his ERA is 3.86 after two horrible outings. I’ll take it.
Lol- Tagging from 2nd on that up 7 runs is a slap in the face that the yanks deserve.
where’s dallas braden? seems to me the rays are breaking some unwritten rules. bunting? tagging and scoring all the way from 2nd? this is a blowout.
Nice catch Gardner.
But to be honest on a night like this we cannot afford you to get hurt.
Bye Bye Melancon
Take Logan and Winn with you.
True story. A 27-year-old male who was one of my ni ece’s employees at the PR firm where they work was killed the other night when a 26-year-old female with a record of 18 traffic violations ran a red light and hit him going 50-60 mph. He was on his motorcycle. He had spent the day at Block Island with his mother and brother and they were in their car behind him when it happened.
**********************
The Yankees aren’t playing good ball right now but they’re far too good a team for it to continue a lot longer. Players will get healthy, slumping batters will start hitting, and the pen will get straightened out. Melancon is doing the best he can and he’ll get better.
It’s only a game.
Can’t be patient with a guy who can’t get outs. He can’t get outs.
Finish up tonight so you don’t burn anybody else and send him back to Scranton with Logan.
He’s target practice. Like he was against the White Sox.
Get rid of him.
Gardner why are jumping in the air in a blowout. The yanks get afford to lose anymore outfielders.
2010 Rays = 1998 Yankees
I’m afraid to watch our outfielders anymore. Gardner – if he didnt’ get hurt he’s lucky. And then Pena almost slides into the wall.
Sheesh.
What a cruddy game.
Damn Melancon is awful. Bring Nova back!
Rays are just rubbing it in now.
One of them better go down right now. Melancon is our “designated hitter”, isin’t he?
This reminds me of a Yankees/ Rays game circa 2003…The part of the Rays will be played tonight by the Yankees
If yanks had any guts at all they would drill a Ray.
WOW….looks like I NAILED IT,,,,huh ?
Tampa Bay just putting the wooden paddle to the Yanks tonight……In every facet of the game…..ESPN is just out of control, and Berman is a Yankee fan….Sutcliffis just an on the air idiot……..Everyone loves kicking the Champ when they’re down…..Payback is painful down the road……
I just can’t watch this.
Everyone killing Boone Logan
Melancon looks even worse.
Time to get rid of both of them. Can’t have guys up here who can’t get outs.
next week will Sux do some damages on Rays?
Logan is the lefthanded version of Brian Bruney. He has no command he walks hitters in every appearance.
plus there was just an all out fist fight in the stands in left field
————————
of course, the only thing worth watching tonight, and I miss it.
just tuned in to see Melancon almost get gardner and pena killed.
i’m not sure the yankees can afford having him on the team.
they are a little shorthanded as it is.
Most pathetic game I have seen.
At least all you can do is laugh. Yesterday, I punched a wall.
sooooooo…With the third pick in the 2010 NBA the Nets select….
I cannot believe people are writing Melancon off. Chill.
Can we just forfeit like, the next 3 games, and let people get healthy? This team is falling apart incredibly fast.
I just noticed that Jeter is hitting .260! Two sixty! Teixeira is at .220. I haven’t been paying so much attention this year, but these are serious concerns.
The Rays kicked sand in the Yankees face tonight and then walked off with their girl. Then they went back and stole their lunch money, delivered an atomic wedgie and tied their underwear to the flagpole. Yanks will sit back and take it
Nice rebound, Mark, to get that K of Gabe.
Had a rough start but he settled down nicely. I’d like to see more of him. He’s got good stuff, nice swing and miss sinker.
I think comparing Mark Melancon with Mariano Rivera is a “bit” of a stretch.
Bad arm action, can’t get outs. A far cry from Rivera mechanically at the same age.
His game isn’t translating from AAA.
His shot may be going by the wayside pretty quickly.
The Drive of the Game is the ecxtasy the fans will get when they drive home in their cars
“sooooooo…With the third pick in the 2010 NBA the Nets select….”
Cousins
Favors = bust.
Cano is starting to pick it up – that’s good.
Ever since the core 4 were on sports illustrated lok what has happened !o
“sooooooo…With the third pick in the 2010 NBA the Nets select….”
John Wall
Dont worry the yanks face Big Game Shields tommrow. The yanks hit him like its batting practice. Dont know how he got that nickname.
this season is the A-Rod and Cano show. everyone else is rubbish
“I think comparing Mark Melancon with Mariano Rivera is a “bit” of a stretch.”
The comparison was meant to stand for the proposition that every prospect goes through an adjustment period and require patience, and that’s true.
We do not know what Melancon is at this point, and given his effectiveness in MiLB, he deserves a real shot.
alright ! leadoff hit ! only chasing 8 !….Let’s go YANKEES !
# vtred May 19th, 2010 at 10:18 pm
“sooooooo…With the third pick in the 2010 NBA the Nets select….”
Cousins
Favors = bust.
Thats what im sayin….Maybe 76ers will take Cousins so we can have Turner
RALLY KILLER
The injuries have really caught up with the Yanks.
Does Melancon have naked pics of everyones mom in here? He has done nothing to prove that he belongs. Ever.

“sooooooo…With the third pick in the 2010 NBA the Nets select….”
John Wall
lol i wish
I’d take Wesley Johnson
but, then again, I bleed orange.
Check out Albaladejo’s minor league numbers? He looks like a stud. How about Edwar’s?
Minor league numbers are not indicative of anything. Melancon has been given opportunities to get guys out and he hasn’t.
Girardi has used him in blowouts and he still can’t get outs. Gives up 3-R HR to Konerko and gets shelled tonight. He brought him in with a runner on 2nd. Even if he gives up a run, its OK. He gave up 3 and 4 hits and almost got 2 players killed.
Send him down and bring up someone who can get outs.
this season is the A-Rod and Cano show. everyone else is rubbish.
—–
LOL. That’s got to be the dumbest statement ever!
Dude, if you weren’t blind, you’d see that Gardner is outplaying both of them combined.
Our pen stinks, Logan’s a joke and there’s a lot of people who like Melancon and he also stinks. I said it all winter and I’ll say it again, we should have signed Damon.
Does Melancon have naked pics of everyones mom in here? He has done nothing to prove that he belongs. Ever.
–
Other than pitch 178 IP in the minors with a 2 ERA and 9 k/9 and 2 bb/9 and 7 h/9
With no pitching, hitting, and bullpen Yankees coldbe in 3rd place by the end of the weekend..
Yankees have too many key players out, evetywhere !!
Cashman better think twice about resigning Jeter, in his contract year he stinks!! Captain leadoff automatic out, has seen better days.
Ok,, what do yanks do… No bench..
“Check out Albaladejo’s minor league numbers? He looks like a stud. How about Edwar’s?”
Check out their FB velos, and how many plus pitches Edwar and Alby have too. And then check out Melancon’s repertoire.
Wha the yanks do in the top of the 9th will be interesting. They need to send a message
Don’t panic everyone….We could still call up Kei Igawa!
j/k
Melancon has had plenty of chances and EVERY TIME he gets bombed. Enough is enough. His stuff doesn’t translate to the major leagues. Why waste a roster spot?
Albaladejo got 60 IP in the majors
This thread is sad.
I am going to spead cheer
:cheer:
His minor league stats are meaningless Rich.
What have you seen from him the last two years at the ML level?
Inconsistent strikethrower, bad arm action, no one putaway pitch, and guys hit the ball hard off him.
It’s not impressive.
It’s one thing if you saw plus stuff. We don’t see that, and they aren’t going to give this guy many more chances if he’s target practice at this level v
Melancon FB has always been straight as an arrow, he’s gotta develop other pitches or he won’t cut it up here ! AAA so far !
Melancon has had plenty of chances and EVERY TIME he gets bombed.
–
He has had 7 appearances last season where he gave up no runs.
Mark Melancon has pitched a grand total of 18 career innings. 3 innings this year
This reminds me of the David Robertson talk from last year. Early on most here wanted him DFA. How did that turn out?
“Melancon has had plenty of chances and EVERY TIME he gets bombed”
18 IP = plenty
http://www.baseball-reference......ma01.shtml
Gotcha.
Melancon will be sent down tomorrow for Royce Ring
# z May 19th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
I’d take Wesley Johnson
but, then again, I bleed orange.
was he that good? at 23 hes a bit older than most in the draft
the ‘pen stinks, so the Yanks should have re-signed Damon?
???????????????????
it’s actually not far fetched for the nets to still get john wall. the wizards need to rebuild big time and they already have a troubled point guard on an un-moveable contract. one scenario would be the nets trade their 3rd and 31st picks with devin harris to washington for john wall.
By far the most embarassing game of the year. Mailed it in before it even began, it seems.
ok, we’re REALLY done now here…. LOL
Melancon needs to get a chance. Not called up for 3 days and sent back down. The bullpen sucks right now and the AAA options are limited.
Basically everyone down there outside of Igawa deserve a chance.
Someone’s goin’ DL tomorrow !!!
It’s one thing if you saw plus stuff. We don’t see that, and they aren’t going to give this guy many more chances if he’s target practice at this level v
–
Melancon throws a 93-95 mph sinking fastball and has a nice curve and change.
we need 2 moves for tomorrow.
need an OF and someone who can hit.
does anyone even know what to do anymore?
i dont even know who can come in and help right now.
Hey Jerkface- Yes, because those numbers guarantee he will be an effective MLB pitcher. He has been up to the big club a few times now and had failed every single time.
Man Kay is too much of a drama queen. I think Girardi is aware that you cannot get away with having a two man bench in the national league. Swisher will be ready on the friday facing a lefty. Posada might be on the DL if he isn’t ready.
Sox beat the Twins
Buchholz goes 8 innings, 2 runs
Ortiz with another 2-R HR
Keep playing like this, and we will have to deal with that monster soon. Could have buried them but Joba decided he wanted this to be a close race instead. How charitable of him – saving the Sox’ season.
Hey Jerkface- Yes, because those numbers guarantee he will be an effective MLB pitcher. He has been up to the big club a few times now and had failed every single time.
–
He pitched to a 3.86 ERA last season, which would be the second best reliever on the team this year.
With Girardi’s insistence to keep trotting out Boone Logan it is hard to convince me that almost anyone in AAA doesn’t deserve an extended try out.
unreal.
My reply to SJ keeps getting eated.
He doesn’t have plus pitches.
If they were plus pitches, guys wouldn’t be squaring up on them so much.
He wouldn’t be the first guy who had impressive minor league stats that didn’t translate.
It may sound harsh but geez, watch the guy pitch. It’s BP out there.
i would like to see romine or montero up. i don’t care if they’re not ready. And why don’t they have another catcher on the 40 man? Or do they?
Wes is going to score, but can he defend on the next level? Probably not.
Yay- Another hit given up by the AAA phenom
with jeter… there has to be something wrong. he is grounding EVERYTHING to short.
Is there anymore overrated prospect than melancon?
Melancon just dominated a batter with a plus curve and a plus fastball, no contact AB
EMBARASSING. Better rebound, win tomorrow, sweep the Mets, and maybe Tuesday is a new day….this is awful…..Jeter looks like absolute crap.
My reply to SJ keeps getting eated.

–
Lars Anderson, Michael Bowden, Ryan Westmoreland
Melancon doing NOTHING to earn the coaching staff’s trust.
He pitches this pathetically in a blowout and he is supposed to get an extended look?
I’d imagine their patience is wearing thin with them. He was so hyped and this is how he performs?
Good.
Erica -
Cheers!
There will be pie!!!!
OK….only 9 runs before the 3rd out is recorded and we WIN THIS GAME !
SJ
We have both said that fans need perspective when the Yankees lose.
Why isn’t Melancon afforded the same?
Melancon throws a 93-95 mph sinking fastball and has a nice curve and change.
————————————————————————————————————————
Why is up here, they have no problem hitting it VERY hard in almost every appearance ?
So what is that, 5 hits in 1+ inning for this phenom?
I’d rather see Albaladejo, at least he has shown he can get people out.
Look Melancon obviously isn’t ready to contribute. Maybe in the future he will be a good pitcher, but right now he isn’t. Nothing is going to magically change overnight. Send him down and bring up some guys that can contribute right away.
Not the best use of selective stats. A 3.86 ERA fir minimal work in NY tells us nothing.
You can quote all the scouting reports you want, for whatever reason, his stuff isn’t translating to success at the major league level.
Perhaps it will over time. Right now? It’s not.
Melancon is overrated. He can’t hit ml hitters out. No plus pitch.
DFA Winn, bring up some kids, he makes $2m is hitting 185 with no power, what the hell was Cashman thinking, this guys done, if Cashman looked at last years stats he would have realized he was done last year. I can’t imagine a worse off season than what Cashman had. It’s bad enough his offf season stunk but it was worse watching him do it with such arrogance. Nice job Brian, thanks for the roster spots for Johnson, Vasquez, Logan,Winn,Granderson, wow.
Wait, the Yankees are on ESPN tonight? That explains everything.
CANNOT STAND THIS TEAM
CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT WINNING SUNDAY, MONDAY, THEN YESTERDAY and losing today…but still 5 game win streak snapped, team feeling good, happy, fine, and maybe rebounding tomorrow. Old man Andy has our faith tomorrow
Lol jerkface- 3.86 in 16 innings and 1.14 whip

************
Apple???
Don’t understand the fascination with Melancon, he’s not fooling any big league hitters. He’s been called up what, 3 or 4 times now and its always been the same result.
You see what Melancon did in that inning? Do you think he might have had a case of nerves in the 8th? Or isn’t that allowed for AAA players who are just called up?
You absolutely need to learn patience and perspective IMO
please shoot this dog.
Melancon is a good young arm. He isn’t the team’s future closer in waiting. But he can be a solid major league reliever he needs more time.
Let’s GO Yankees!!!!!
hard ground ball? yeah right.
The primary concern with Melancon isn’t even the fact that he’s struggled getting outs at the major league level. Lots of young pitchers struggle and go on to excel.
The sample of opportunities Melancon has isn’t sufficient to draw any conclusions about what he might do in the future based on the results he’s accumulated so far.
And as I said before – I think he should get a shot.
But the real concern with Melancon is – and it’s not a small issues – is how he throws the ball.
He simply doesn’t throw the ball well. His arm action is ugly.
Some pitchers can overcome bad arm action and still find success. We’ll have to hope Melancon might be one of those.
But watching him throw is concerning.
How he throws the ball doesn’t correspond well to the terrific performance he’s put up in the minors to date.
And bad arm action is a difficult thing to change or adjust at the major league level.
Most young pitcher’s who at first struggle and then go on to find success have trouble initially do to their approach. They overthrow, try to be too fine, throw rather than pitch, etc.
It’s not as common that they have trouble due to the way they throw the ball and then simple get over that.
The Red Sox sent Buchholz down last year expressly because his arm action wasn’t suited for success at the major league level despite his dominance in the minors. He adjusted the way he throws and is now doing much better.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Melancon. I hope he does well but there’s reason for concern that relates to variables that are difficult for a pitcher – even a young one – to modify.
“Melancon throws a 93-95 mph sinking fastball and has a nice curve and change.”
Well, MLB hitters seem to be having no problems smacking it all over the yard, over a 2 year span.
I hate SJ but he’s 100% right on melancon
The sun will come out tomorrow
Betcha bottom dollar that tomorrow
There’ll be sunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
“Lol jerkface- 3.86 in 16 innings and 1.14 whip”
Wait. jerkface’s factual post is funny, yet people who have said that Melancon has had had enough chances should be taken seriously?
at least winn has been consistent
Perhaps it will over time. Right now? It’s not.
–
Wow so we like .. have to let him play… and see, over time.
Fake SJ44 you’re the best!
Sorry. 1.4 whip
I wonder if the 1st inning stolen base was actually an out. Would all of this have happened?
Can we be honest here? The pitching stinks. The depth is awful.
Jeter is EMBARASSINGLY TERRIBLE
“CANNOT STAND THIS TEAM”
But let me guess. You just love them when they’re winning. Did I get that right?
captain can’t wait to have a shower
Nice job Brian, thanks for the roster spots for Johnson, Vasquez, Logan,Winn,Granderson, wow.
Hey pistol pete you forgot to add Chan Ho Park (a.k.a. Chopper a.k.a. Flopper)
Did Cody Ransom pass his picture of Girardi over to Boone Logan, or did Logan purchase them from him, knowing he will make back the money if he gets the prorated big league 400K salary?
I was in the shower, so I missed it – how did Melancon get Gardner and Pena killed?
Eh, the Rays go for the kill – I can’t blame them; I like that mentality (though not in ST and not ramming a catcher)
Please DFA winn n Logan
come on 2 out rally
I fell for the fake? FM
CB,
You can opine about his arm action all you want, but he throws that way and is 93-95 with sink, a good curve, and a change up. Perhaps with regular work he can be a good contributor.
Also, I agree that pitching Logan was tantamount to conceding the game
Cashman had an awful off season. Let’s face it.
I blame this all on Cashman.
Provided us with no depth at all, counted on Joba to be good, traded away valuable commodities, and now we are left in the cold.
Jaime Huffmann might be starting a game in Cici Field!!!!
Rich,
I’m all for patience. However, I’m not blind to what I’m seeing.
I’ve watched him pitch a lot in the minors. I have no idea why his stuff isn’t translating but it’s not.
2 innings, 5 hits and 3 runs, plus several hard hit outs just isn’t good.
Couple that with his other appearances and it’s not impressive.
It may not be right or fair but, if he can’t do better in these appearances it’s hard to think he’s going to get many more chances.
He has to start showing more than this.
Betsy,
Gardner made a great catch, but he had to dive backwards and fell awkwardly against the wall. He wasn’t injured though. Pena just dove for a fly ball in right field.
Again this team is better with Damon n matsui. Nuff said
“Jaime Huffmann might be starting a game in Cici Field!!!!”
there is no such person
The “real” SJ has said similar things about Melancon all winter and many times this year, FYI.
I just want another A-Rod Homerun.
A dunker to RF that a normal RFer gets (Pena was out there), and 2 seeing eye singles. A rays are hot tonight, give him more than 1 chance. He needs to be in the mix for a week or two.
If he gives up a run every appearance, sure toss him.
10-2 lead? Only Joba could blow that.
“there is no such person”
Or such venue. (as CiCi field)
Cashman has batted 0. Granderson can’t hit leftys. NJ hurt. Vazquez can’t pitch in NY. Winn/thames stink. Logan awful.
The “real” SJ has said similar things about Melancon all winter and many times this year, FYI.
–
I’m not going to be fooled. The fake SJ44 just parrots what CB says about his arm action. The real SJ44 would understand patience and isn’t reactionary about 1 appearance.
Jeter needs to stop partying so much and start caring about baseball again. Dude has been going out laaaaaate every night.
“10-2 lead? Only Joba could blow that.”
LOL, sad but true.
I’m still peeved that he blew 2 games in the last 3 days. We had the Twins game and Sox game in the bag and he blew it.
What a gutless performance by him.
Cashman didn’t have a crystal ball telling him he would have so many players down at the same time. And it’s not Cashman’s fault that we have players sitting out games who are not on the DL and leaving the bench short because of it.
Joba will still be good. He’s too good not to be – if you get my drift.
Focus on WC
Poor Trisha. She still thinks NJ will be healthy n good
Funny how Tex gets killed, yet nothing about Jeter.
Tex is in his prime. Jeter is 36.
Tex will be fine. Jeter? Who knows. He isin’t going to stay young forever.
hold the fart, dude
Dylan, thanks!
I don’t care what Melancon throws – what his velocity is – or that he has a nice curve or whatever. He can’t get anyone out. Even in Phil’s debut in 2007 when he gave up 4 runs or whatever, he had swing and miss stuff – the Jays were impressed, I remember that. Melancon deserves a shot, but he has to show something; his MiLB numbers mean squat right now.
Jeter isn’t killed? read the thread
at least arod and cano are hitting again.
At least Cano is finally hitting again!

I destroyed joba on Twitter the other night. Didn’t even reply. What a wuss. Was probably cooking meth
Thanks to Cano, A-Rod, and Gardner for showing up to tonight’s game. hopefully tomorrow the rest of the team will show up!

Re-read the thread and get back to us.
The Yankees have 11 hits and 5 walks tonight. There is hardly a shortage of chances, they are just failing miserably at executing .

Melancon is a typical 4A guy
“Joba will still be good. He’s too good not to be – if you get my drift.”
Many “good” players never lived up to their potential. He just doesn’t have the drive to be good. He has conditioning issues, questionable work ethic, and always needs the carrot danged in front of him. The guy is going to be 25. If he hasn’t grown up by now, then let him grow up on someone else’s watch.
I don’t like his body language, I don’t like his arrogant look, and I don’t like his facial expressions and “nonchalance” in his postgames. All are troubling signs that he just hasn’t learned.
This team is terrificcccccccccccccc

Betsy, Melancon recorded 13% swinging strikes this game. Are you kidding me? Don’t make me go drudge up some of Hughes bat outings when he first came up.
Why didn’t they sign Valverde? They knew Hughes would start

“The Yankees have 11 hits and 5 walks tonight. There is hardly a shortage of chances, they are just failing miserably at executing .”
What else is knew? Been like that for years. This team just can’t get big hits, except A-Rod. A-Rod saved their bacon last October too when Tex, Cano, Swish, Melky all went MIA (Damon/Matsui were hitting in the low .200s before the WS too, so he carried them too)
Gardner is turning into a superstar right before our eyes.

oh, damn
thinking gardner will be leading off soon and jeter will be down to 7th.
keep it going
Don’t tease me!
hahahahaha. at least it is interesting.
I wish I knew more words to that song…………………………
I don’t party with him but a good friend runs a few of the more popular clubs in NYC. He said jeter has been epic this home stand.
everyone thank Mark Melanoma for putting this game out of reach. 2 runs he coughed up loom large now.
Jerkface-
As I’ve said several times, Melancon should get his shot. Nowhere have I said that the sample of major league opportunities are adequate to draw conclusions as to his future performance.
But as you watch his 93mph fastball also watch how many times he misses his spot.
And he misses his spot because of his arm action.
You can get away with that in the minors. Often you can’t in the majors.
That’s all I’m saying. I’ve followed Melancon from the time he was drafted and was hoping that by now he’d be a significant contributor by now as a late inning set up guy.
But regardless of what his minor league performance has been, he doesn’t throw the ball well.
We’ll see. There’s a reason why the yankees keep sending him down to the minors so quickly and haven’t been eager to give him a real shot.
Why couldn’t the Yankees do this for the first 8 and 2/3 innings!
ok…. If they get to Winn, they HAVE TO PH winn…. I want to see CC Sabathia up as the tying run.
The pen sucks. Valverde is great. Math.
This is now funny to watch !
“We’ll see. There’s a reason why the yankees keep sending him down to the minors so quickly and haven’t been eager to give him a real shot.”
Why haven’t they altered his mechanics?
Jerkface, ok – let’s not do that. However, if you were going to do that from August of 2007 and April 2008, you can keep in mind that he was rehabbing in the former and pitching hurt in the latter. The fact is, in 2007, with all of Phil’s August struggles, he ended up with very good #s for a 21 year old in the AL East. I’m not comparing the two – there is no comparison – but even then he was hard to hit. Melancon is not hard to hit, period.
This is where Boone Logan and Melancon hurt.
Was this Yankee comeback just a media conspiracy so I would still be watching to see MacGruber commercials???????
“I don’t party with him but a good friend runs a few of the more popular clubs in NYC.”
Oh, ok that makes it credible. sheesh
They waited til the very end to rally. Hope the momentum carries over to tomorrow.
Actually Kim Jones was on with Francesa and she said Joba cares a lot and took the responsibility for losing the game last night. You people who judge a player from a 1 min post game interview are dumb.
Pena can hit meatball fastballs – Winn can’t even do that.
Btw this is why u don’t quit n pitch Logan
tying run ON DECK….winning run…IN THE HOLE !
“everyone thank Mark Melanoma for putting this game out of reach. 2 runs he coughed up loom large now.”
So the 2 he gave up count more than the other 8?
Gotta give the Yankees at least credit for trying for a comeback despite the odds at this juncture.
Right now, I’d be more upset if the game ends on a first pitch swing that results in an easy out — grounder, pop up, etc. Gotta keep the inning and momentum going.
PS- my friend works for EMM Group. Look it up
3 run homer?
If Jeter scores this inning….WE WIN !
just get the tying run to the plate for entertainment’s sake….

MacGruber!!!!!!!!!!
Time for Benoit to throw some balls.
Still no Jorge or Nick Swish
N now the pen makes u even more mad
Betsy, Mark Melancon 2009 7.2 H/9
Phil Hughes 2007, 7.9 H/9
Freaking just DL them already
1 batter away from the tying run. Who would have thought this would happen? Just need a good AB from Miranda and we have a chance.
Wonder if Swisher would be good enough to pinch hit for Winn if they had a chance to tie it? I’d hope they would at least try this time if it came to that.
The sun will come out tomorrow
Betcha bottom dollar that tomorrooooooooooooooooooow
There’ll be sunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
or… posada should PH. you dont need your foot. or let swisher hit righty. Swisher, Posada, CC > Winn
After being burned by Karsay, Dotel, Marte, Farnsworth, and the other bums Cashman threw money at for the bullpen, he no longer wants to sign established guys
He believes they can fill the bullpen with cheaper alternatives
Oh, ok that makes it credible. sheesh
–
As credible as SJ44
Please – if this game was close, we face Soriano. Not this bum.
Can’t project “what ifs”.
oh my, nice swing
Jerkface, you did NOT just compare another living human being to Phil Hughes, did you???
Even if Miranda gets on base you know old man Winn will make out.
tjd another way to look at it is this. If one of the other pitchers gave up two less runs, then Melancon’s wouldn’t have done the damage.
I really have no feelings one way or the other about Melancon but I don’t think anyone can talk about his 8th inning without also talking about his 9th. Certainly better that he showed progress rather than the opposite.
Miranda, Winn and Jeter this game….1 for 12….HA !
“PS- my friend works for EMM Group.”
yeah- And I stayed at a Holiday INN last night. Whoppeee
Of course it comes down to Miranda and Winn again! Lol, you can’t make this stuff up.
get one of our real hitters up!!!!!!!!!!
lol winn’s on deck. that figures.
Winn? LOL
Yeah just let Swish hit Right Handed, great idea. Way better than Winn as a lefty
If Miranda reaches, I would have CC hit for Winn.
“Why haven’t they altered his mechanics?”
They did. The yankees felt that his arm action was the cause of him blowing out his elbow (despite throwing relatively few innings in college).
They tried to shorten his arm action and make him less over the top.
But there’s only so much you can change some pitcher’s arm actions.
Everyone knew that Alan Horne had horrible arm action. They tried to work on it but some guys just throw a certain way.
It’s difficult to change and often if you try you can worsen their stuff.
If Miranda gets on, CC can’t bat for Winn.
swisher is a big league hitter. how can he not hit righty off a righty if they need him?
Nick, that was me
I probably shouldn’t have done that. The point is that Melancon deserves a shot, but I’m not expecting much from him; I hope I’m wrong.
Sigh. When your best isn’t good enough…
Me and the fake SJ have the same stupid sense of humor. Uh oh.
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
well guess that doesnt matter now.
if CC hits for winn, I will pee my pants
Oh well……
A change up up 4 runs…Gutless piece of garbage
Let’s get used to this. we aren’t good at 65%
oh yes….Miranda is the answer at DH……NOT !
oh damn, Lakers only lead by 2?
night, Yankee people. We might get lucky to win tomorrow
I kind of like fake SJ44.
Screw Melancon
The loser put the game out of reach.
Never want to see him again. Bring up someone who can get outs, like Nova/
It seems like every loss ends with Miranda, Thames or Winn making the last out.
So close
Damon n matsui r as good as NJ n Miranda

100% correct
Ya’ never know !
They NEED Swisher and Posada to play tomorrow.
Enough is enough. If these guys can’t play hurt, then the team is going to go into a huge slide with all of these injuries. You can’t baby these guys when half of your opening day lineup is out unless you want to dig yourself a decent sized hole.
They are 4 games out of first place now, and the lead in the Wild Card is shrinking. It may be early, but it can get pretty tough to bounce back if you let too many get away because you want to give Swisher an extra day off “just to be careful.” If he isn’t hurt anymore, he HAS TO PLAY.
When the team is healthy, it’s ok to do this. When so many guys are hurt, sitting these guys saps so much depth from the lineup that it makes it almost impossible for them to keep up the pressure on an opposing pitcher. Good teams will simply outslug the Yankees with the lineup they are putting out there and the state of the bullpen right now. You just cannot afford to sit these guys a single game more unless you want to be looking way up at Tampa soon.
If AJ pitches to his record. We win this game. Another 6 runs scored by this team. So the offense is there.
This loss had nothing to do with Melancon. If he doesn’t give up any runs, the Yankees don’t get to face TB’s mop-up relievers. The game was lost in the fourth inning.
Time for Cashman to start scouring the Mexican leagues again.
DL someone tomorrow for sure ! And send Winn packing to Afghanistan !
new thread
do we still have john rodriguez in aaa?
I remember a time when bloggers were claiming Melancon was the future closer of this team. Now a days, that has died down. However, everytime he gets called up it comes with the obligatory “melancon has thrown 6 straight scoreless innings for SWB strking out 12 over that span”. Then he pitches and gets destroyed. So, in conclusion, we need a tatoo artist to tatoo the letters AAAA on his forehead.
Well, early in the season we know the following:
1. Yankees bullpen stinks.
2. Mark Texiera stinks.
3. A.J. Burnett is consistently inconsistent.
4. It’s only May
Poor Jorge. Poor Yankees.
