Yankees strike first in Subway Series
Behind six shutout innings from Javier Vazquez (thanks, AP, for the photo), the Yankees took the first of six Subway Series games this season with a 2-1 win at Citi Field. Vazquez left after throwing just 70 pitches when he hurt his finger while laying down a bunt, but X-rays have already come back negative. Also encouraging was a strong outing from Joba Chamberlain and a tense-but-effective ninth from Mariano Rivera, ending a week in which the bullpen had been shaky.
The victory snaps a three-game losing streak for the Yankees after they dropped the last game against the Red Sox and both games against the Rays. Check back for more updates from the post-game clubhouse.

Good win. Hopefully Javy doesn’t miss his next start.
Nick in SF May 21st, 2010 at 10:32 pm
Oops! Thanks! I am wary of all Red Sox fans!!
Very nice win.
And very glad that Javy’s x-rays came back negative.
Rivera is the GOAT, Wright is an enigma of his former self. Nice wins for the Yanks.
Great feeling for Russo getting the only RBIs of a victory! Good for him! He said he and his brother grew up Yanks fans!!!!!!
congrats to Javy, well deserved.
Mo? very hittable now. this worries me
First 1-run win of the year…good sign.
if houston can hold that one run now, it would be a perfect night..
Like I said yesterday.
Both Granderson and Javy Vazquez will rebound and prove all the Cashman haters wrong.
Those were the 2 biggest moves of the offseason.
Good win. Its nice to see the Yankees bullpen do their job for a change. Javy was lights out and definitely deserved that win. I’ve been critical of him, but I really hope that he has finally turned it around. Russo also stepped up big time.
Mo still shaky
.this is why i hate not getting insurance runs. those tense as heck ninth innings
Mo needs to lock down the command. I’m not worried about him because he always goes through these periods during the season.
Hopefully Vazquez is ok and his finger is just a little banged up. Good job by him tonight and they needed all of it especially with the way this lineup is hitting right now.
LET’S GO YANKEES!!!!
Now that I think about it, the return of a (hopefully) effective Aceves and a few off days will help the whole team, not just Joba.
Where are the rest of the fellow Anti-Bostoners tonight???
Trisha,
Yeah that is what I heard. It was already somewhat easier the 2nd semester king of knowing what to expect.
I am just happy I don’t have to take clas-ses with the same people anymore. I have never seen so many people with brown noses in my life
.
Mariano will be fine, just a bump in the road. I am actually more worried about Joba, but I think he will be fine too.
SJ, the only Joba nonsense I see is you and other posters dismissing him when he doesn’t get the job done. You are not exactly the paragon of patience when someone isn’t producing the way you want, when you want, how you want.
I certainly hope your nephew doesn’t have such harsh and strident fans when he has a tough time.
*********************
I don’t think the game could have happened better. The Yankees need to be able to win close games when they don’t have a lot of hitting going on. They did it. The hits will come. the team is far too good not go have it happen.
The baseball gods said to stay tuned because tomorrow the hits are going to start to come. (if it changes, talk to them…)
Night all

HAHAHAHA!!! You’ve never seen Peter Gammons then!!! Brown nose/Brown tongue!!!
Who the hell would think Kevin ‘MET KILLER’ Russo would be the main offense tonight.
Mo was solid, except for the 2 cookies he threw to Davis and Bay just hit a good pitch.
Good grief.
Mo will be fine. I guess the idiots don’t seem to realize that Mo has hardly pitched the last 3 weeks.
Nobody’s command is going to be perfect shaking off that rust.
LGY you’re definitely going to like it much better.
Congrats on finishing the first!!!
I will be happy with 200 ip and a 4.5 ERA from Vazquez. Hopefully he bounces back quick from this injury.
I guess the idiots

Remember what El Nino did last year against the Mets?
5 hits in 3 games, 3 doubles, 2 RBIs
we won a 1 run game!
which finger did Javy hurt?
russo has Long Island blood, good kid, sound.
good move, play him everyday.
Kevin Russo has a very good swing and a good approach at the plate. He’s is going to be a good hitter for a utility guy in the majors and a valuable player for the yanks.
russo is Long Island sound.
My TV coverage ends almost immediately after the game. Who received the Player of the Game? Javy or Russo? What a game. These close ones are hard on those of us with faulty hearts!
Where is that clown Hit Girl with her “the sox are on fire” nonsense. 3-4 in their last 7 and may be staring at a sweep this weekend prior to heading to Tampa. Selig better stop worrying about the All Star game in arizona and get some of that Ortiz urine examined.
things are starting to turn around for us.

I would also like to know!! My guess is Javy. How could you not give it to him?
Houston wins
Russo will never be more than a utility guy for the Yankees but I actually think he has the potential to start at 2B somewhere. He doesn’t have much power at all but he is a gap hitter, high average, decent OBP, he can steal a few bags. The thing I like about him is he’s gotten better every year. He gets moved up a level every season and in almost every season he improves on his previous numbers.
Rays LOSE!!!!
Good grief is right. How many times has Mo had dirt thrown on him by the non-believers, only to come back and smite them down? This has been going on for 5 or 6 years now.
He was the only closer who did not blow a game last post season. And he shut down the Phillies while throwing with a sore right side.
Yeah, it’s annoying, but that is all it is. The Yankees have bigger things to fret about.
CR9,
2010 is the first year where Russo was truly ready. He was drafted as a 21 year old and 2009 was his first year in AAA.

Wow. Go Houston!
merna loy, why do you spell your name like that and not like Myrna Loy spelled her name?
Rays lose. They leave Yankee Stadium and go right back to their offensive struggles.
Brett Myers, the former Philly, with a great performance tonight
Philly helping out NY lately.
“If that’s the case, why was he not given a shot over Cody Ransom? Justin Christian? ”
He wasn’t ready. He was only drafted in 2006. He really had a big year last year in AAA and it really became clear that he had a real shot to be a useful player the second half of last season.
I’m hopeful he can be their utility guy for several years if he can play OF. The main challenge for him will be whether or not he can play SS. But even if he can’t they can afford to carry another player as a back up SS as long as Russo can play the OF.
Unbelieveable-
The Rays win every game except for the one Matt Garza (one of Erica’s Avengers) starts. The guy pitches a 2 run complete game and doesn’t get me a win!
I smell conspiracy!
I bet they send Russo down with Granderson comes back.
The Yanks like having below average players like Winn on their roster.
Stros win. Got last nights abortion back.
I’m glad Russo showed why he needs to play regulalrly until Granderson is back, and then be on the bench.
LOL! The fans are chanting “Derek Jeter” in the background of the SNY postgame.
Whose idea was it to have a live postgame outside the stadium?

Can we give Russo more than a couple games before this happens?
“Russo will never be more than a utility guy for the Yankees but I actually think he has the potential to start at 2B somewhere.”
I agree. 2b is just not a very high bar for performance and it’s possible that 2b as a position right now has less talent in the minors than any other position.
There just aren’t many good 2b prospects. I could see Russo having a nice, productive major league career at 2b. He’ll hit well compared to the average non superstar 2b.

Trisha,
Stop trying to moderate the forum. It’s not needed.
You are picking a fight with the wrong person.
There is room for all viewpoints here.
Believe it or not, waving pom poms doesn’t give you more fan points than those of us who look at the game with a more critical eye.
Like I said, there is room for both viewpoints on this forum.
Stop being a self appointed moderator. It’s not needed.
Phil Hughes on the mound going to rebound and learn from his mistakes against the Sox. Mets offense is bad and they never faced Hughes before. I like my chances.
Dylan, Thanks. It is maddening that I don’t get any of the post game interviews and the PoG. Russo was impressive tonight. A good call up. And big kudos to Javy. His last two games have been very good. Mo will be fine.
Keep winning, Yankees.
Good win & the blog was decent tonight.
Interaction and discussion was good.

The real bats are coming, CB. Montero, Romine, Adams, Laird, Eduardo Nunez and Daniel Brewer. Adams gets overlooked, but, that young guy is an oldtime, nose in the dirt ball player. Maybe a Pedroia-Lite. Not the power because of the swing and park, but, that type of player.

First, I didnt find that to be a cheap shot. Since SJ is a Yankees fan, I wouldnt want his nephew to be called the kinds of names that Joba has been called on here the past couple of days, because of an occasional lack of performance. Joba is lazy? Someone said that. Joba is a fat toad? Someone said that too.
Second, Trisha did not say anything to SJ about cheering Joba. If I believe correctly, she was making a statement based on all the things thrown out there the past few days, such as Joba should be DFA’d, nothing directed at or indirectly referring to SJ. SJ decided to attack her pom pom waving (I dont know why), and Trisha obviously felt the need to defend herself.
Ridiculous. That’s how I would describe the commentary about Russo after his two hits tonight ….. The first two of his career that is. Will you people please chill out. Take it easy. It actually is embarrassing to read this nonsense and know that fans of other teams see this stuff and just assume that all Yankee fans are idiots because of a few overzealous goofs.
guess betsy took the might off hence the lack of tension
Erica what did you see in russo to night.

There’s absolutely no reason to apologize for that question. It’s a good perfectly appropriate question for a forum. In fact it’s kind of a good example of what a forum is for.
“The only stupid question is the one left unasked.”
Hi, is this your first night on the LoHud Yankee blog?
Why are Yankees fans fighting amongst eachother? Stop it! It is unnecessary. We are all Yankees fans.
The only fights should be the fight against the city of sleeze, murders, stranglers, peter gammons, john buccergrose, matt damon, jim rice, snakes, elephants, giraffes, sharks, keith law, michael smith, teddy bruschi, murders, thiefs

Trisha,
I do believe a moderator is needed on this “forum” especially in the past week. Some terrible and crude things were said by some posters. We are all fans here and do not have to read crap about Yankee players.
Never ever thought I would read so many negative thoughts about Jeter and Mo. These two players are the faces of the Yankees. Posters need to give them a break.
And last of this rant is — There should be a filter that will not accept certain words in the posters names. A diverse group of people post and learn here. Gross should not be acceptable,
Hi, is this your first night on the LoHud Yankee blog?

Thats a stupid question!
The idea that Betsy is the cause of tension on this blog is ridiculous.
Golson had a big double header tonight. 4-7 with 5 runs scored, a double. homer, 2 RBI and 2 walks.
“The idea that Betsy is the cause of tension on this blog is ridiculous.”
I agree, CB.
mick May 21st, 2010 at 11:01 pm
I asked earlier in the night if it was Fake SJ44 and nobody responded!
Some people would disagree with that.
Who cares if people say nasty things? Just ignore it. When people hate on Rivera and Jeter they just wind up looking stoooopid when either players come through, so just let them make themselves look stooooopid.
“The real bats are coming, CB. Montero, Romine, Adams, Laird, Eduardo Nunez and Daniel Brewer. ”
GB7-
I completely agree. Those first four in particular have a chance to be the first crop of good young home grown hitters the club has had come up together as a bunch in years.
When Cano came up it was basically him. But these guys are clustered together.
Adams really is having a terrific year. He’s going to play in the bigs and have a chance to be a starter somewhere. He has to be one of the better 2b prospects in the minors right now.
I asked earlier in the night if it was Fake SJ44 and nobody responded!

If Russo could start at 2B elsewhere wouldn’t he be more valuable as a trade piece down the line than as a utility guy for the Yankees?

Didn’t get to see the game but great win and sounds like Javy pitched really well. I certainly hope he’s ok and cam make his next start after getting a little momenum going. Also good to see Joba come back with a good outing after the last couple. We all know he has that in him, he just has to get more consistent doing it…also always nice to win when the sox and rays lose.
The only problem I see is somebody actually having a problem with somebody bashing Boston on a Yankee forum.
Hi, is this your first night on the LoHud Yankee blog?
—
Yes
LGY-
It’s a tricky balance because Russo has never been thought to be much of a prospect or to have great tools. He also didn’t settle on a position in the minors until late and even then moved around.
He’s the kind of guy whose trade value will only increase if he has success at the major league level and some team sees him as a viable glove to hold down 2b.
The yankees are going to run into this problem frequently.
They kind of already have it with Aceves. I think Aceves could be a decent 4th/5th starter on a ton of teams. But for his trade value to exceed his utility value out of the pen to the yanks he’d have to get a chance to pitch out of the rotation for a while and demonstrate he can do it.
Erica – always OPPC – Sesame Street Mafia and GTLU supporter
It’s so annoying. Why would anyone not like Betsy. She cares more about the Yankees than probably most of the posters on this site (NOT more than me, though!!)
mick, I thought I explained to you a couple threads ago that Betsy really does worry like that, and it shouldnt be a problem for you.
Russo won that game tonight.
They are still not hitting.
Takahashi handcuffed them all night.
He provided the rookie spark.
He better play tomorrow against the righty.
With a little tinkering on his defensive veratility, David adams could do for NYYs what Randy Velarde did. He’s almost as good going back and deep into the outfield on pop-ups as Cano is. He’s another that could play anywhere and well. That’s a bat I’d hate to lose.
“The only problem I see is somebody actually having a problem with somebody bashing Boston on a Yankee forum.”
Couldn’t agree more!

BOOOOOM!!!
LGY,
25 year old minor leaguers without plus speed or plus power don’t have much value. He is a plus defender @ 2B, so Russo would be a good throw in piece to round out a package to a team that without a 2b. That being said he could also be a better Hairston type for the Yankees.
People who object to CR9’s views should be banned! He speaks the truth, even if people don’t want to hear it.
==================
He?
In addition to Russo, it’s good to see Joba get back on track. Girardi didn’t leave him much margin for error with his bullpen management, but he rose to the challenge.
I would hope Russo plays tomorrow.
He’s hit RHP better than LHP in the minors:
http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/cgi-bin/pl.cgi
“Adams has a .903 OPS. As a 2b?”
Tom-
He’s having a huge season in the Eastern League. For a guy like Adams – a polished college guy – AA is enormous. He was very good in A ball but that can always be him just being more mature than the competition. AA is the test. And he’s been even better.
And he’s playing in a stadium in Trenton that is very difficult to hit for power in. To do what he’s done as a middle infielder is very impressive.
Well at least tomorrow we get chan Ho back.

Well I must agree with Mick and Bucco. She has been so much better lately and that is appreciated.
You only have to see my name tag to know why I do not agree with most of her posts when she gets personal. My tag line for awhile was: and I will not bad mouth Phil.
Earlier this week she had a post that was only Joba and the red faced mad icon and Phil, a heart. And Erica, she has bad mouthed Damon in a manner that I was surprised you didn’t respond.
It is hard to ignore her when she posts every other minute. It was nice w/o her tonight. I also agree that many are too polite to say anything.
I liked Leiter’s (or was it Flaherty) comment on how Vazquez basically went with breaking and off-speed pitches early in the game and then broke out the fastball. He was om target all night, except for that pain in the neck Cora. NYYs pitchers seem to have issues with low contact Punch and Judy hitters like Cora, Willits, etc.
mick May 21st, 2010 at 11:19 pm
Yes. Julian McMahon has a delicious heinie! Absolutely magnificent. And Cano may have the most gorgeous smile I have ever seen!
“He will be in the lineup tomorrow.”
For Robbie, Derek or Alex?
CB,
That is a very good analogy to Aceves. Makes a lot of sense.
Cervelli is another guy who is a great backup for the Yankees but may be developing into a guy who could start for someone else.
I am very curious to see what they do with all these catchers. Especially since Cervelli was probably such a surprise to the organization.

Erica, understandable about Damon. But my issue with her is that she would, in the past, take every moment or incident to badmouth Joba because he was in the rotation and Phil in the pen. Their roles are reversed now and she still will be ungracious at times. I stopped participating in this form because of her and have only come back in the past few weeks.
I enjoy this forum as there is a lot to learn from baseball experienced people. And some good humor, too.
One day, just for kicks, when I’m sitting around with the guys drinking beers and talking about sports I’m going to stare down one of them and tell him he has a delicious high-knee. That won’t make them feel uncomfortable at all.
