gimme a break!
gimme a break!
just the one
Phil needs to rebound off both of those joke hits.
Nell Carter! Nell Carter!
Kit Kat! Kit Kat!
It’s the same stinking crap every game. They get the wider strike zone, and we get cheated. Every this game this entire week has been cheap.
7 games in a row now.
I really don’t understand this cutter BS. Wright is not hitting a good fastball right now. They showed how behind he was on it and then he gets a cutter right down the middle?! Enough with this cutter already. It cost Hughes 2 homeruns in last start and now a run in this game. Eiland needs to stop this crap.
Hughes has to be better about executing pitches with two strikes.
The scouting report on him throwing so many four seamers and cut fastballs seems to be out. He’s going to need to adjust.
But his curve ball hasn’t been a pitch he’s needed to use much and it hasn’t been real sharp. The change up hasn’t been used much at all.
And some more ground balls would help.
Now we are forced to swing at pitches early in the count for fear of getting cheated later in the count.
Would be nice if the Yankees offense would show up this time. They were pathetic last night and almost lost that game by not tacking on those key runs. You can’t win if you can’t score, and even the Mets could probably score enough to win if you don’t put much up on the board.
Everyone was talking like this weekend was going to be an easy sweep, but you still have to put some runs on the board to beat even a bad team, and the Yankees offense has been up there hacking away early in the count almost every at bat and giving away at bats.
I miss our old lineup that used to make pitchers work. It feels like we let too many pitchers have easy outings with low pitch counts. Even Dice-K made it to the 6th inning the other day when he gave up 5 runs in the first.
Hey Matt,
You wonder why the Yankees offense dont show up until we’re down in games.
WE’RE GETTING CHEATED until we’re down, then we get fair calls down 4+ runs.
Blame the umpires, not the Yankees.
It took Phil 25 pitches and 2 runs , to Pelfrey’s 16 pitches no runs .to get out of the 1st.
They are hitting the ball hard but they are finding guys.
wow never saw Prince run all out – must be jelly ’cause jam don’t shake like that.
– McCarver to the cornfield
Looking at that clip they just showed of Prince Fielder chugging around third base… you have to think he could be in better shape than he’s in, don’t you?
I mean… doesn’t he? Or, couldn’t he…be?
EVERY SINGLE YANKEE FOX GAME – They find a way to bring up the 2004 Red Sox. I cannot believe they found a way in the Yankees Mets game to bring up the freaking 04 Red Sox. I can’t stand these two calling these games.
To put it another way: Nell Carter was in better shape… wasn’t she?
Im losing it!
Nice walk by Winn to bring up the pitcher!
Figures now Winn walks and doesn’t strike out…with the pitcher on deck.
Sad that the best at bats seem to be coming from Randy Winn lately. Despite the lack of results, he’s been working the count far more than the majority of our lineup.
I don’t think Cecil was that, shall we say….portly
THATS NOT A STRIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The cutter should be used early in counts, not as a put away pitch. With 2 strikes, hitters are just trying to protect the plate, and will swing at anything near the zone. The cutter isn’t yet a good enough pitch to get good hitters out when they have already committed to swinging.
How many Yankees are playing tonight who were even on the ’04 team, 2?
Phil has seen more pitches than Swish
Buck and McCarver are such jokes, it’s insane. Talking about Cervi’s fingers then 04 Red Sox and just DRIVEL!!
TALK ABOUT THE GAME, WHICH IS WHY WE ARE ALL WATCHING! Not a single person tunes in to hear these 2 dopes blather, yet somehow that’s all they do.
I hope Phil doesn’t swing the bat that is all this team needs is another pitcher getting hurt at the plate.
That guy in the crowd Jeter was talking to looked like Shane Victorino
Stop throwing cutters when you can see a hitter can’t hit your fastball.
It has nothing to do with being cheated. He continues to get beat with his cutter, refuses to adjust, and Cervelli is not forceful enough to not have him rely on the cutter so much.
This team misses Posada a LOT.
Four Yankees: Jeter, Arod, Mo, Posada
Is anyone can pay Fielder all that money? How can a man be a baseball player and look like that????????
Hughes looks “huge” at the plate. Larger than he ever does pitching. Or is it me?
Of course Winn and Hughes have longer ABs than the middle of the order…
Wow Hughes is putting up a good at bat.
Hughes will learn when to break out the cutter with experience. Jose Reyes was taking some ugly hacks at his fastball, so he broke the cutter in on him and he popped out.
In wrights case he didn’t get the cutter far enough away from him.
Why don’t we see Gardner bunting either every game or 2. he’s great and it would keep the infielders moving.
Good AB by Hughes. Makes the pitcher work some. Good AB.
I see we are in full blown “blame the umpire’ mode tonight. Sigh……….
“The cutter should be used early in counts, not as a put away pitch”
——————–
I am sure Eiland has told Hughes and Cervelli this so why are we still seeing it in big spots and getting hurt by it? Everyone knows that Wright will not hit a good fastball and Hughes did him a gigantic favor.
Here’s Prince Fielder posing with some members of the Brew Crew fan club:
http://www.bluejake.com/images.....isdead.jpg
SJ44
You make a great point. He needs to use it in a better count. Posada is a veteran and we will miss him even though Cervelli is good.
“Hughes looks “huge” at the plate. Larger than he ever does pitching. Or is it me?”
He’s 2 inches taller than Alex. Hughes is 6’5.
Gardner should try to lay down a bunt in this game. Wright has an errant throwing arm and you might get him to throw the ball away.
Hughes looks “huge” at the plate. Larger than he ever does pitching. Or is it me?
–
He should look huge, he is taller than Jeter, Tex, Cano, etc.
Just a quick drive by post – I knew this would happen tonight. That whole idea of just getting by on FB and cutter made absolutely no sense to me when we discussed in ST the importance of having multiple pitches to go to. Phil is stubborn and I got that impression from Eiland, who said in ST that in the minors Phil just would not throw the change, no matter how often they tried to get him to do it. He’s obsessed with his fastball and his new toy, the cutter, and he’s given up on his curve to the point where it’s not that good of a pitch for him. He’s now a 2 pitch pitcher – does this guy look like a top of the rotation starter right now? I’m a bit stressed out, so maybe my last comment is a bit of an overreaction, but I’ve felt like this since his last start. He’s got a very good FB, a nice cutter, an average curve and an decent change he never throws. I really hope he gets back to using his curve and being a real pitcher instead of a thrower.
Rant over.
Erica
I don’t always blame the umps. But the umps in MLB stink.
Hughes is the second biggest Yankee at 6’5 240.
jerkface -
It’s not that noticeable when he’s pitching, though. It was shock to see what a big man he is at the plate.
Funny as hell, Span just hit a ball to the warning track in the Twins game and pimped it with his finger in the air. The old we are number 1 and then it landed in the outfielder’s glove. What a knuckle head. He thought he had a walk off grand slam. Hahaha.
Betsy
You need to calm down. Phil will be alright it’s a learning experience. And he did throw some curves. I do think he should use his change more often because it’s a good pitch.
Phil is actually bigger than Joba, he’s a real big dude
Jeremy-
Not referring only to you. Its just exhausting coming on here everynight and seeing the same rants about umpires.
Every. Single. Night
How about we try a different approach? Everyone just as-sumes that no one is happy with the umpiring unless said otherwise?
WHAT IS MCCARVER TALKING ABOUT?
You can’t find a van in New York City? This guy is way too out of touch and just a babbling fool to be doing national broadcasts. Fox is embarrassing.
I would prefer that Moeller catch Phil, but tonight I understand why he did not as Phil has not had a chance to work with him. That said, I’m not blaming Cervelli. I was not a fan of his pre-game comments where he said that last outing was problematic because of a couple of bad pitches. Wrong – bad pitches and bad pitch selection. Once I heard that, I knew Phil was in trouble.
BTW, for anyone curious about this L

Houston off to an early 1-0 lead!
Betsy
I’m not attacking you. I just think you really shouldn’t worry about Hughes. He is not like A.J. Burnett.
Is there anything Hughes can do to not get soo many foul balls? Change speeds more? Because it kills his pitch count in almost every start.
nice comeback inning
Erica – just letting you know I finally watched Glee, and yes Dream On was amazing!!! Also, I watched Greys this morning and pretty much cried the entire episode.

That was a good inning for Hughes, in terms of pitch count.

One of the best pilot’s ever
Jeremy, believe it or not, I’m perfectly calm. I just completely disagree with the notion that it was ok for Phil to try and get away with a 2 pitch arsenal, especially after various discussions have noted that the cutter isn’t that good of a pitch for him and doubly especially since the whole idea was to make hm a complete pitcher.

I fail to see the point of that. Why watch the first episode only?
Thats like going to a restaurant and being given a bread basket and then a check!
The difference between Pelrey and Hughes: Fastball
Pelfrey throws a sinker, he wants contact, and throws it to get ground outs.
Hughes throws his fastball to get swings and misses and weak contact, but ends up with a lot of pop outs/fly outs
The umpires had very little to do with that first inning. Hughes just wasn’t executing pitches.
If people want to blame the umps they are just missing the game in front of them.
Someone in the dugout clearly spoke to hughes.
He threw 12 pitches that inning. 12 of them were 4 seam fastballs.
Jeremy, I know from attacks and believe me, that was the furthest thing from, lol.
would be nice if Derek would find it in himself to lead off an inning for us by getting on base, instead of a K or one of those routine infield groundouts, sheesh.
Erica

The umps use the called strikes to speed up the game too, it’s their payback.
Phil recovered with a 12 pitch inning. He’s back on track pitch count wise.
I stopped watching Lost awhile ago, but the pilot was absolutely one of the best things I’ve ever seen on tv. I just can’t stand Darlton (Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, the exec producers – or whatever, the big wigs on that show).

When a game is on MLB network, is the camerawork from MLB or the hometown broadcast?
I ask because the centerfield camera at the Twins game seems to show a real “true” view of where the pitches are going – a direct angle.
Gotta stop whining about the umpires.
They are bad all over MLB. There is no Yankee bias.
Stop sounding like Red Sox fans.
Throw less cutters in the wrong situation, it’s a 0-0 game.

I agree. Phil should use his full arsenal.
This is why the Yankees are not hitting right now. Who cares that Ike Davis made a great play? It was a terrible at bat, and a terrible approach.
Pelfrey has been erratic with his fastball tonight. He has walked Teixeira on 4 pitches, walked Randy Winn in front of the pitcher, and could not put away Hughes.
Why in the world as a right handed hitter would you go up there swinging at the first pitch? Pelfrey has good stuff, he can get you out even on missed location. Swinging at the first pitch when you don’t see much of what he has makes you less likely to get a hit, and also hurts the rest of the lineup which can’t see what he has coming into the game.
Jeter should be dropped in the lineup. How can you have a leadoff hitter who refuses to take pitches? Injuries are not an excuse for the lack of consistent offense, guys like Jeter and Teixeira have done almost nothing over the same span.
turn on the game, 0-2 already.
Hughes already chokes. How low can he go?
People obsess about pitch count way too much. Besides that last game where he was just bad pitch count hasn’t been a real issue with Hughes.
He’s pitched deep into games other than his first start where he was building arm strength and his last start where he was bad.
Pitch counts tend to level off as a game goes on as long as a pitcher’s stuff is there. Pitches thrown per inning isn’t linear.
Not at all Jeremy, lol….thank you!
Is this Granderson’s first Rehab game tonight. I heard he is DH’ing in Scranton?
CR9 – yes, quite a few people died. It was very intense.
Another impotent popup.
holy cow, score some runs
I guess tonight’s results are Muts win, Sux win and TB win.
Does no one else find it a bit odd that almost 2 months into the season Brett Gardner has a higher slugging and OPS than Mark Teixeira.
Something about that is so wrong.
are these guys awake?
Jeremy, as I said, he’s stubborn…………or over-confident or I don’t know what. The pitcher has the ball in his hands and Eiland has spoken to him several times about not over-throwing the cutter. He used to have a very good curve, but he didn’t use it in the pen and now it’s not that great. If he used it, I believe it would become a good pitch for him. He’s just going to have a hard time pitching the way he seems to want to pitch………Maybe he’s fallen too much in love with his FB.
Well the great Tampa offense is getting shut down again by the Astros so far.
mark my words:
middle of the third. 2-0 mets.
and that’s all the runs they will need…
Gardner has to be more aggressive early in the count when he gets fastballs over the plate. He doesn’t swing and then he gets stuck swinging at a pitcher’s pitch. His at bats are the total opposite of Jeter’s.
Tex is killing us
Pelfrey’s a very fine pitcher, but it’s hard to tell if any pitcher is really “on” the way the Yankees are hitting.
“Why in the world as a right handed hitter would you go up there swinging at the first pitch?”
He’s thrown first pitch strikes to 10 of 11 of the hitters he faced.
Derek Jeter has a career average .390 average on the first pitch.
Now STHU

His curve looks pretty good to me. He should throw it for strikes more often. But Hughes will be fine this year is about pitching well and learning. I think he will learn his lessons.
Pitch counts tend to level off as a game goes on as long as a pitcher’s stuff is there. Pitches thrown per inning isn’t linear.
–
Throwing a lot of pitches early makes it harder to extend into the game. If a pitcher is throwin a lot of pitches early, it doesn’t really bode well because batters gain the advantage over time.
Now that said, Hughes has thrown a lot of pitches in the 1st 2 innings of a couple of games and ended both of them in the 7th.
The offense still looks anemic.
I guess the only thing more frustrating than watching Jeter turn into a groundout machine is watching Jose Reyes turn into a flyball/popup machine (for Mets fans).
by the way, CG in rehab 0 for 3…
tex is absolutely ugly to watch. he needs to start turning it around before we go home, or he’ll hear it from the crowd.

Not offended! Just giving the logic behind my bread basket, check metaphor. Sheesh!
I don’t know what is wrong with Tex but he can’t hit fastballs right over the plate. It’s either a pop up or easy fly ball. He looks dreadful.
Jester’s O-Swing % this season is 33%. That’s 14 points more than his career average and 11 more than his last three.
“Does no one else find it a bit odd that almost 2 months into the season Brett Gardner has a higher slugging and OPS than Mark Teixeira.”
25% of the season is done.
Mark Teixeira has had 192 plate appearances with 163 at bats.
He has 8 doubles.
Overall he has 15 extra base hits (8 doubles and 7HR). That’s it.

You need to be more positive. Hughes is a smart kid. All young pitchers make mistakes and many learn from it.
No way Derek Jeter is winning the gold glove this season…
Bay has his Red Sox shirt under his Mets jersey. Just amazing how these former Red Sux still hurt use.
Teixeira is not driving the ball. Everything is a pop up or ground ball into the shift. He’s even missing FB down the middle. And he loves FBs.
Overall he has 15 extra base hits (8 doubles and 7HR). That’s it.
–
That sounds about right. He usually is at 50% XBH and he only has 34 hits!

I think the bread basket logic was poor unless the bread basket is free and then they kick you out of the restaurant.
**********
Because you ordered drinks when you first sat down. DUH!
So because Jeter hits .390 in his career on the first pitch he should go up there swinging at it?
Jeter is hitting .270 this season, so despite his career accomplishments, he is not performing at that level so far. Pelfrey also has walked 2 guys in the first 2 innings, including Texeira on 4 pitches and Randy Winn who can’t hit anything. He also had trouble putting away Hughes, who worked him to a 2-2 count and was able to put it in play.
Despite the first pitch strikes, he has been inconsistent with his control as at bats go deeper. Pelfrey is tough on right handed hitters with that sinker, and you are down 2 runs in this game against a guy who has been walking hitters out of the full windup.
Jeter is the leadoff hitter, he needs to work the count and let the other hitters in the lineup see what Pelfrey has. It seems like he almost never sees more than 2 or 3 pitches leading off a game anymore, and that will cascade down the lineup when the pitcher doesn’t have to work as hard for the out and nobody gets a chance to see what he has so far that night. If Jeter doesn’t want to take pitches, then he needs to be dropped out of the leadoff spot to somewhere in the lineup like 6th or 7th where he doesn’t have to be as patient.
Though I shouldn’t talk about being positive because I went on a tirade about Joba this week LOL !
I fail to see the point of that. Why watch the first episode only?

Simply terrible from a number 3 hitter in the batting order. I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for this guy to turn things around but I’m beginning to have doubts about the kind of season we may be looking at.
His numbers just aren’t adding up for a slugger to this point. You keep thinking he will get hot and yet every game for the most part is following the same pattern of lame at bats.
“People obsess about pitch count way too much. Besides that last game where he was just bad pitch count hasn’t been a real issue with Hughes”
————–
Hughes does have a lot of games where batters foul off 6-7 pitches in an at bat. I was just wondering if he can do something to help himself out in those spots.
The major problem with this Citifield logic is that other teams DID hit home runs there last season
Betsy
Glad you’re back and alright!
The first season of ABC’s Lost is the best.
You know why? ’cause they didn’t even dream to make it 7 seasons. Once the show became hot, the writers apparently lost clues. The final season is just average, or sucks.
Nick in SF-
Do I need to remind you of what happened the last time you rolled your eyes at me????
Phil’s pitching a lot more slowly than he had been…………he used to just take that ball and throw it.
Seems like some Yankee fans on here hate the Yankees.
Teixeira needs to hit HRs for the Yankees to have a great offense, but at this point, I’d settle for some line drive singles. Arod wasn’t hitting for power earlier in the year, but he never killed the offense because he could still get base hits and extend rallies.
That curve looked good………

“Throwing a lot of pitches early makes it harder to extend into the game. If a pitcher is throwin a lot of pitches early, it doesn’t really bode well because batters gain the advantage over time.”
Yes. I know that. I’ve watched the yankees wear pitchers out down the nub and destroy bull pens for many years.
I was only referring to this idea that people have about oh know, he’s thrown 20 pitches in the first inning!!!, etc.
That’s why I qualified my comment about focusing on the quality of the guys stuff.
Even great pitchers tend to cluster their pitches in certain innings. But even when CC pitches and that happens people start worrying about his pitch count.
That’s what’s happened with Hughes several times this season already. After one to two innings it’s far too early to know whether or not pitch count is going to be a problem for a start unless the number is exorbitant which it wasn’t for Hughes.
Awful, Phil
hughes is choking again

I’ve got another puzzle for you
Middle of the Mets lineup coming through against Hughes
pitching ike davis like hes david ortiz in his prime
Hughes is afraid to challenge one of the worst lineups in baseball?
Why is he going with a cutter on 3-2 there when Davis has not pulled a 4-seam fastball all night?
Hughes won’t be in this game long if his command doesn’t get better.
Phil just looks bad. Not attacking anyone.
deja vu …. two quick outs, then the former Sux gets us again, the Ike walks again …. argggg !!!
Hughes needs to start going after Davis. The guy won’t swing at junk.
Hughes misses Posada back there. That’s a significant part of the problem, I think.
“Jeter is hitting .270 this season, so despite his career accomplishments, he is not performing at that level so far.”
You are right, this year he’s hitting at a .419 clip on the first pitch.
Drop it Matt
Awfu, awful awful……….with 2 outs, too.
David Wright? Really?
ugh, I’m sick of these two out rallies. I’ve watched the Mets all year, and this is the most clutch Wright has ever been.
Another pitch right down the middle.
Yep a repeat of the first.
That was stupid pitch selection by Hughes/Cervelli. They approached Wright the same way both at-bats and he did the same exact thing
unbelievable …. deja vu …. wright up the middle, again … argggg !!!
deja vu….1st and 3rd innings are mirror images almost
gloaming
the real phil hughes is back
Doesn’t matter what Hughes does if this lineup can’t score runs.
The Mets are a terrible hitting team but even they have been able to buy a few flares with runners on base. The Yankees are taking a terrible approach at the plate and aren’t even putting up a fight.
I don’t need Phil to have a slider, but he’s got to throw all his pitches. Also, his stuff doesn’t look good at all.
Terrible pitching………….but people thought he was going to throw like he had been? He’s still a #5 starter…….
Hughes looks like he wants to stay away from Ike Davis. Still looks like he has no interest in throwing a change up.
This is my fault-
David Wright is one of Erica’s Avengers
Maybe Tex (also an Avenger) will step it up now to counter act
again with the cutter..he needs to get away from that pitch..

The Mets are a terrible hitting team but even they have been able to buy a few flares with runners on base. The Yankees are taking a terrible approach at the plate and aren’t even putting up a fight.
He still has to hold them.

KRFC?
I don’t know why they are going away on Wright. His swing is long, go inside.
Also if Hughes didn’t duck it looks like he could have snared the first liner
can’t believe we’re going to lose to the F’in worthless Mets.
Walked Ike David twice to lead to runs. Ike Davis like Ike Davis is something special.
I know GreenBeret7 said Ike Davis has a bright future. I dont dispute that. I respect GB’s knowledge of the game and the youngsters in minor league systems.
It’s just that Ike Davis is not a superstar YET. Why walk him not once, but twice.
And why do they keep pitching away to Wright with the fastball ? The guy can’t hit anything inside with his swing ? Did Hughes and Cervelli read the scouting report.
The pitch wright just hit was not a cutter, it was a 93 mph fastball away.
Its all Winn’s fault
As long as Jeter swings at stuff inside the zone and stops swinging at balls, I’d be happy.
He’s not attacking anyone – lost his confidence? I don’t know, but as I said, he’s very slow on the mound, unlike his other starts where he barely paced around and threw the ball nearly as soon as he got it back.
Hughes still has a disproportionate amount of difficulty in two strike situations. That should be a big advantage for a pitcher but doesn’t seem to be as big an advantage for Hughes as it should be.
Hitters see his curve ball better than they should. I don’t know what it is, but with his fastball being so good his curveball should be more effective given it’s bite and his overall command. There’s something with that pitch where it’s not as good as it should be.
Terrible approach by Cervelli and Wright. Wright will swing threw any high or low fastballs. If you make your pitch he is an easy out. Can’t pitch him the same way both at bats.

That is not fair at all. Hughes is a young pitcher. It seems like some Yankee fans trash the players on this team more than other fans.
Ike is a nice player and a promising hitter, but why is Phil afraid of him? I said we were going to get growing pains with Phil and this is exactly it – except he’s a 2 pitch pitcher with growing pains. Ugly.

Yep, practically the same scenario as the first inning.
The way this offense is approaching the game, might as well be 13-0, rather than 3-0 tonight.
Two guys on this team are leaving me stumped is Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira, if those guys cannot do their jobs the Yankees are going to be looking pretty bland on mounting rallies.
Would be nice if the offense was able to do something
I remember the Yankee Offense last year vs. the Nationals in interleague, did nothing, kind of like the last few days…and how Cashman can decide to have a less offensive team a year after for this season is perplexing to me…..season is sooo long, you need lots of offense, lots of options….…not Randy Winn and the injury prone Nick Johnson….

It’s mind-boggling that Hughes won’t go after Davis. And I don’t buy the fact that Hughes needs Posada behind the plate. The problems he has had with throwing too many cutters is something that we fans have picked up on, so I’m sure it’s been a topic of discussion among Hughes, Cervelli, and all the coaches.
Phil doesn’t throw his curve ball enough – that’s why he struggles with it.
will I continue allow Yankees ruin my weekend?
I have trashed some players that need to be trash but to call Hughes a bust is a joke. Now Joba I’m not sure.
Good play??
That was as routine as a play as it gets.
Who cares what Jeter is doing on the first pitch numbers wise? That’s not his job as the leadoff hitter, and I’m not going to drop it just because you told me to because you disagree with my opinion.
Jeter is the leadoff hitter, it’s not about the results early in the game as much as the quality of the at bat. Jeter needs to work the count in his first at bat or two and let the hitters behind him in the lineup see what the opposing pitcher has.
What is his movement like tonight? Does he have good control of his pitches? Those are things that will be of tremendous help to the hitters behind him in the lineup. Gardner is forced to become the pseudo-leadoff hitter and stand there and take a bunch of pitches, and then that hurts him because he doesn’t get on base because he can’t be aggressive enough on pitches out over the plate.
If Jeter doesn’t want to act like a leadoff hitter, then he needs to be dropped in the lineup. You can live with it if he’s hitting, but he hasn’t been hitting this season and most of the hits are on the first pitch of the game with nobody on base.
Even if he gets a hit in that first at bat, he probably hurts the offensive approach more in the long run because he only saw one or two pitches. The pitcher will probably end up throwing fewer pitches in that inning as a result, and the way guys like Teixeira have been behind him, they haven’t been scoring to make up for it.
When you have a depleted lineup, you need the guys at the top to put up tough at bats. Jeter has been a quick at bat almost every time at the plate, and the numbers about his swing rates bear it out. If he doesn’t want to act like a leadoff hitter, you can’t keep letting him bat first in the order.
“Ike is a nice player and a promising hitter, but why is Phil afraid of him? I said we were going to get growing pains with Phil and this is exactly it – except he’s a 2 pitch pitcher with growing pains. Ugly.”
Left hand hitter. Hughes, without throwing his change, has no pitch to get him out.
Hitters are hitting: .243 .243 .324 .568 on 1-2 counts against Hughes, which is 89% better than average.
And .217 .266 .283 .549 after 1-2, which is 25% better than average
Something about it!
The Yankees advanced scouts stink…..
Since he got beaned… you bust Wright inside with hard stuff…. dust him off the plate up and in and throw breaking stuff away.
It seems like even decent pitching will shut the Yanks down. Such easy outs. Getting shut down by Pelfrey is pathetic. Opposing pitchers aren’t scared of the Yanks right down they just attack them.
CB,
I agree about Hughes’ curveball. It seems like he gets 95% of his strikeouts on the fastball or cutter. The curveball at this point has become a “get-me-over” pitch or a waste pitch, not an out pitch.
Guess the Yankees have to hit the nightclubs
Can’t miss the VIP lounge at Le Chic

I have the TV on mute and am listening to Sterling and Waldman on the internet gameday radio, much better from that aspect at least….
Betsy
He is throwing all of his pitches. So I don’t see how he is a two pitch pitcher. He just needs to throw them more often.
If and when the yanks retake the lead in this game the negative nancys on this board are not allowed to cheer ..
RS, that tells me he’s lost his confidence. Why is he afraid of Ike Davis? Look at his pacing…….he’s not the same pitcher. In a way, I’m glad, because there is NO way he could continue to pitch the way he had been. He’s not listening to Eiland – that’s what bothers me.
Hit the jersey take your base. Swisher looks like he is still favoring his bicep.
Hughes needs to buzz Wright. Why does he continue to pitch him away.
Huh, I thought it was KFRC radio, which broadcasts the Idiot’s Delight show.
Lovely and Tampa leads Houston so you can probably put that one in the books. Houston won their World Series yesterday.
Why is Joe Buck talking about who is coming up next inning for the Mets.

And if we lose to the Mets so what ? They stink and their not going to the playoffs.

Good AB by Swish !
Phil Hughes curveball has been worth negative runs this season. They don’t have a ‘batting average’ on pitches split anywhere I can tell, but that tells me enough. Its just not that great this year.
Trevor, then Phil really is not prepared to be a major league starter, is he? How can he get by with 2 pitches……….one of which isn’t a great pitch? I saw this on another board, but I refused to believe it…………and now I wonder if it’s true. Did Phil just spend all that time on the change so he could win the #5 spot? Does he not really believe that he needs it? Also, I admit I don’t know that much about pitching, but why can’t a good curve get a LH out?

Well at least you said “IF”
In order to do that they have to actually put men on base and mount rallies. Do they look right now like they have a clue what that entails.
I’m listening to the game on radio, because I can’t stand to listen to FOX – and Sterling came out with the stat that the Yankees lead MLB in runs scored.
Interesting.
Great at bat by Swish and then more 1st pitch swinging. They have to have better at bats.
Jeremy, but he’s not throwing them enough. Didn’t Phil develop a great curve in the minors? What’s happened? The pen happened – maybe it wasn’t so great for him in certain ways. He learned to depend too much on the FB/cutter and gave up on the curve.
He’s calling the same pitches strikes for pelfrey and balls for Hughes
Sterling and Suzyn whining about injuries and Damon and Matsui not being here.
Really, there’s still enough in the lineup to score runs. Where’s Mark Teixeira?
Looks like 3 runs is all the Mets are going to need to win this game. The offense has to wake up or this one’s already over
Hughes hasn’t thrown any inside pitches to Wright. No wonder he’s been able to sit on the fastball on the outer part of the plate (although the pitch he hit his second AB was middle). I can’t believe the Yankees and Hughes/Cervelli missed out on that part of the scouting report.
Also, I admit I don’t know that much about pitching, but why can’t a good curve get a LH out?
–
Its the way the pitch breaks. The Curve is going to break away from righties and in to lefties. That means a curve away from a lefty is going to break into the middle of the zone.
Hughes will be fine. As fine as Pelf has looked so far, I would still take Hughes.
Fran
lol, Hope you get it worked out!
The Yankees aren’t hitting, but Pelfrey looks really good. He may even be better than Santana right now.
wonder if Posada’s game calling would be any better?
Swisher sees 10 pitches and gets a hit, then the next guy decides to hack away at the first pitch.
Brilliant approach. Pelfrey, who is erratic tonight with his pitches and working deep counts if only you’d actually let him, and they keep giving away at bats by swinging early in the count.
The Mets bullpen has been incredibly depleted the last few days. Might make sense to try to run up Pelfrey’s pitch count and get him out of the game? Nope, we’d rather hope and pray he throws it down the middle rather than putting up a tough at bat and maybe getting a pitch you can sit on.
Same thing with slider.
Hughes….
42 fastballs
9 cutters
1 changeup
6 curveballs
^^^^ Rediculous, its like his curveball is an afterthought now.
I think Hughes will be fine going forward. Some people worry too much. This is all about development.
OMG, Daisuke is pitching a no-hitter!
I think some need to learn to accept negative criticism about the Yanks. They aren’t playing well and were pointing out the shortcomings. Or we could act like Sox fans and tell you that Ortiz is still the best player in baseball.

I think what is getting to folks is the continual dead innings and when they do get a man on, nothing happens.
Is Derek Jeter setting the table
Is Mark Teixeira playing like a #3 hitter in the batting order
There are guys that have to step their games up and right now this team looks dull and lazy. Even in the victory last night the offense was provided by a starving minor leaguer in Kevin Russo
The fat cats of the Yankees stranded men on base when routine fly balls could have scored runs.
I can’t call you guys Yankees fans..way to negative.. Yankee fans I know are arrogant and always expect to win that is why everyone hates us… U negative fans are just silly
CR9,

Couple of questions:
As a leadoff hitter whats more important– getting on base or seeing a lot of pitches?
Do you think Giradi knows Derek likes to swing at the first pitch? If yes, who’s fault is it to bat Derek first?
Didn’t we get swept and shut out in one of the games by the Nationals last year?
The lineup is in a little funk right now. No one is really hitting consistently besides A-Rod. It happens from the time to time during the season.
Boy, the Twins can’t buy a Grand Slam, can they?
3-1 Tampa over Stros, put that baby to bed.
Betsy
He is not but this is a learning curve. Santana, and Halladay didn’t just become great starters their first year they had to learn and develop. So I think some people should calm down a bit !
“Hitters are hitting: .243 .243 .324 .568 on 1-2 counts against Hughes, which is 89% better than average.
And .217 .266 .283 .549 after 1-2, which is 25% better than average ”
I wasn’t comparing hughes to league average. That’s why I said disproportionate.
Phil Hughes has been a better pitcher than AJ Burnett this year.
When AJ gets to 1-2:
.130 .161 .167 .327
When AJ gets to 2-2:
.107 .167 .143 .310
With Hughes stuff and the overall quality of how he’s thrown I expect him to be significantly better in 2 strike counts than where he has been.
Pitchers with great stuff – stuff like Hughes has – are deadly in 2 strike counts. Hughes is good but not tremendous – AJ is tremendous in 2 strike counts. His problem is getting to 2 strikes.
Given Hughes’ stuff I’d expect hitters to hit well under .200 against Hughes in 2 strike counts.
So yes there is something about it!
The frustration is not just in the results, but the apparent lack of a solid approach at the plate as well.
Some hitters go up there swinging early in the count, and other hitters work the count and get on base. Yet, the hitters who aren’t working the count refuse to adjust their approach and make the pitcher work.
Pitchers don’t have to really work to get you out when you fall into predictable patterns at the plate, and that’s what’s going on with guys like Jeter. If he always swings at the first pitch, why throw him one out over the plate? Just give him one that’s running in towards his hands and he will ground out to short since he isn’t patient enough to take it. It’s turning our supposed tough at bats into incredibly easy outs.
Jerkface, thanks! Well, if he refuses to throw his curve, then he’s going to get hit………….I just don’t like this development and, in any case, his FB and command seem to have deserted him.
Great inning, Phil!
The Empire State Building mau shine in blue and white yet!
In-N-Out Burger, save me a shake!
CB,
‘Better than league average’ means hitters are hitting better than league average. Not hughes!
Basically, Hughes is probably worse than all but the dregs of the league in 2 strike counts.
We will come back and win this game. Positive Vibes ++++++
I’m sorry but I’m not going to sit here and ooze juices and fluids about Derk Jeter or Tex, when you have watched their approaches at the plate and the absolutely ridiculous at bats they have had.
I’ve seen Derek swing at pitches recently that I can’t recall him doing in his entire career up to this point.
Mark Teixeira is hitting in the low 200′s, this is a perennial MVP candidate can he put the team on his back and capitalize and give them a jump start tonight.
The offense is baffling. Pelfrey really is a good pitcher, but I could be pitching and they’d struggle.
Jeremy, I agree that he’s young and he’s going to experience growing pains; I cautioned about this for the last few weeks – but everyone was insistent that Phil was already a stud. If he was not stubborn about his FB and cutter and was throwing his curve and change more – but just getting hit – it would be one thing. His approach is not very good, though – and that’s a problem.
Nick in SF, It’ll be a double double night tonight
I’ll say again when yanks take the lead sit on your hands and don’t cheer u are not allowed to.. Go yanks
Jerkface, is that true? If so, Phil simply won’t be able to survive as a starter – I don’t care how good his stuff supposedly is.
We may get to see if Phil can bunt

Ok. Thanks for the claification. I thought that was taking the pitcher’s performance as a baseline.
That’s particularly bad then. Just very strange.
unfortunately we have to give up an out yet. Have to score Winn and get active on the scoreboard.
Betsy,
Hughes sucks 1-2 and after 1-2, but he is good on almost every other count, and he is excellent on 0-2 and 2-2.
But its weird how bad he is when he gets 1-2 and then if he lets hitters keep going.

Pat M, I like your optimism.
Betsy, deep breathing can sometimes be helpful.
Jerkface, nice stat, rather misleading though…..How many innings has he thrown vs. how many hits surrendered ?????
Hughes isn’t losing confidence or getting “scared” of hitters or being subborn.
He’s just going through what all young pitchers are going through. The league is adjusting to him some. That was inevitable. It always happens.
So know it’s up to Hughes to adjust back.
And he’ll do that. It may just take a few games to do so.
He’s got great stuff. That hasn’t changed.
And I’d think that over time Hughes will get better. His failure in those counts has to be… unsustainable

The Mets are a terrible team. If we are like the mets we suck.
CB, I was really referring to his demeanor on the mound. Before last week, he stalked the mound like he owned it; now he’s a lot slower.
I don’t mean to sound like I think the guy is a bust, lol – not by any means. I’m still trying to work out how you can get by throwing 2 pitches. I do disagree about Phil being stubborn, but then again I guess he’ll learn eventually if hitters keep teaching him lessons.
If he had a good curve in the minors, then I know he can find it again – he just has to use it. It might not be great all the time, but it will get better. The change? He has to use that as well. I suppose this is what you mean, CB, by adjusting back to the league?
This is truly getting ridiculous with these guys and men on base.
This is like a bad disease has gotten hold of them. I don’t believe what I’m watching, utter ineptitude.
ouch
3 fastballs down the middle. Takes 1, fouls off 1, Strikes out on the other. The offense needs Jesus.
Joe Buck gets so happy when the Yankees fail. I really hate that guy !
Phil needs to talk to Joba.
sigh
The Mets bottom of the lineup is terrible, they have no depth. Through 3 innings Hughes was up around 60 pitches, because the top of the order was making him work and pay for his mistakes.
The Yankees TOP OF THE ORDER has not made Pelfrey work a lot. That is a problem. If Jeter and co had made him throw a few more pitches early on, he might be on the verge of coming out of the game right now, which would be pretty big given how he’s pitched and the depleted nature of the Mets pen.
The bottom of the order cannot be relied on as much to get runs across, yet they are the only ones in this game who have gotten on base. That’s a pretty serious issue, don’t you think?
Things aren’t as black and white as you would like to believe, or you would like to convince yourself of to avoid seeing the reality that the Yankees offense has been pathetic these last 2 games.
Bottom of the order? We have 8 guys who should be hitting 9th right now.

The struggles of the offense are primarily the result of guys like Jeter and Teixeira having bad approaches at the plate consistently. Normally I would buy that, but the performances of Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira does not lend credence to that, they haven’t just been in a funk, they have bee spotty, inconsistent and unreliable on far too many nights so far.
Derek is doing nothing to set the table for the team, he is not getting on base and starting rallies, Tex is not knocking in runners in key spots. He may have such and such amount of RBI’s, but how many have come in spots that could change the game.
This is frustrating to watch. I think we are all past the point where we say Tex is a slow starter and as for Jeter, I don’t know what his malfunction has become.
really why did that miss
And that was definitely a strike on Castillo. Flinching shouldn’t earn you a strike, if it’s over the plate it’s over the plate.
Where was that pitch ?
And why wouldn’t they show a replay of where THAT pitch was??????
“The change? He has to use that as well. I suppose this is what you mean, CB, by adjusting back to the league?”
He has to make sure he’s still pitching off his fastball while mixing his other pitches better.
The one thing that greatly surprised me last year (and I posted about this several times last season), troubled me this spring, and continues to confuse me is why Hughes curve ball isn’t a more effective pitch.
That’s an issue for him and I think it’s part of the reason why he’s throwing so many cut fastball’s especially to RH hitters – like david wright.
From everything I can see his curve should be a plus pitch. It’s got nice bite, he genrally locates well, he has good arm speed on the pitch.
But for whatever reason the pitch doesn’t have the overall impact that it should given it’s independent quality.
It should be a devastating pitch. But it’s not acting that way. It’s almost as if hitters are seeing the curve out of his hand better than they do his fastball. Or they’re picking up and identifying the pitch early. I don’t know what it is.
But that’s part of why he’s not finishing hitters off as well as I’d expect him to.
And the other thing he really could use is to start getting ground ball outs. It’s very striking how few ground balls he’s generating. It makes pitching much more difficult.

Are you serious
It’s FOX. They dont care when we get cheated. In fact, they love it!
When will Cervelli and Hughes go inside on Bay and wright ?
Hughes thinks he can get by with only one pitch in the big league? Throw something other than the fast ball, man.
Looks like Cervelli and Gardner have started to turn back into pumpkins, and is it almost midnight for Hughes as well? Judging by his last 2 outings methinks so!
Pitch right down the middle. Hughes was so worried about 90 year old Castillo and missed right over the plate. This game is just about over.
Mets could bust it open right now
When you don’t even make the other team sweat by chipping away, they are going to keep tacking on runs as you allow more and more momentum to swing their way and you are going to dig yourself a hole.
This game is not over at 3-0, but at 4-0 or 5-0 it may be given the way the lineup has hit. At some point you can’t keep blaming the starting pitching when your offense has been this pathetic. The pitchers are going to make mistakes when they put the weight of the world on their shoulders knowing how little run support they are going to get.
Obviously the catcher and pitcher dont realize Bay cant hit breaking pitches
Well, I don’t see anything going well tonight.
CB, is it because he’s just not throwing the curve enough? That once he does, he’ll get that reaction from hitters? If not, then that’s just weird – it used to be a good pitch for him.
As to the no groundouts, does he not have a 2 seamer?

You couldn’t pay me to listen to Fox broadcasts of Yankee games
********************
Between Fox Tonight and ESPN tomorrow night, John and Suzyn are starting to sound like a better option.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
ROFL, now that is saying a mouthful right there, anytime Suzyn and Sterling are a better option to listen to.
Bay and Wright have gotten meatballs right down the middle on every at bat by Hughes. Not a good approach by Hughes against those 2.
Good Hughes There
YES!
1 more out and we are still in this game!!
Wow, look at that. He goes after Davis and gets him out. Where was that in the 1st and 3rd inning??
Now PLEASE pitch Wright inside before going away.
Huge K. Lets stay in this thing. Maybe the bats will come around. ONe more out
And Wright doesnt like the call. JOKE. SICK!
200million for this ?
Go troll on another site.
Hughes is falling into predictable pitch sequences tonight to the right handed hitters like Bay and Wright and that is why he has been in trouble a lot.
If you never come inside with the fastball, the hitter will look out over the plate and hit it if you keep throwing it out there. You have to bust him inside once in a while to keep it in the back of his mind, you can’t continually throw fastballs away away away and expect major league hitters to not adjust.
Eiland should come out to talk to Hughes here. He hasn’t executed all night against him make sure they know what to do.
Wright swings through an inside fastball? Why I never!
See what I mean? Fastballs up and in to Davis and Wright and they aren’t even close because they are sitting on the fastball away.
Wow – Hughes is sucky tonight.
Is it pitch like crap week? The only one who seems to have not gotten that memo is surprisingly Vasquez. What is up with our starters?
ROFL, now that is saying a mouthful right there, anytime Suzyn and Sterling are a better option to listen to.

Macfan,
One of the radio stations was giving away tickets to tomorrow night’s game. And the announcer said the best part of going is you don’t have to listen to the ESPN announcers or the radion broadcast!
cervelli really does keep tipping that high fastball
McCarver: I couldnt agree with you more, Joe. I hate the Yankees too. I mean, er, wait.
Positive vibes people …. far from done …. would be a signature win
“When will Cervelli and Hughes go inside on Bay and wright ?”
Bay can’t hit a breaking ball – at all. So he should be getting curve balls.
And on the whole one thing Hughes isn’t doing as well as he was is working both sides of the plate and mixing location.
Cervelli is a very good young catcher but I do wonder if his lack of experience isn’t the right mix with a young pitcher like Hughes on the mound.
Cervelli isn’t going to know the weaknesses of a guy like Bay as well as Posada does.
But the situation is what it is with Posada being injured.
Well, that was ok………….:)
Good job Phil. Let’s go Yankee bats!
YES! Good recovery Phil!! Kept us in it. Tex will get it started this inning!
Alright time for some runs.
That’s why Moeller should catch Phil……………
200 million for this? May 22nd, 2010 at 8:52 pm
Looks like Cervelli and Gardner have started to turn back into pumpkins, and is it almost midnight for Hughes as well? Judging by his last 2 outings methinks so!
*****************
You can’t call a pitcher a “pumpkin” based on an outing and a half. You also can’t call him an ace after a month.
This is what we should have seen earlier in the game. Hughes going after Davis, and pitching inside to Wright. I don’t know why it took the third try for them to figure this out.
Now if we can score a couple runs in this next inning, that would be huge. Make the Mets pay for failing to bring Castillo home.
It only took 5 innings to actually follow threw on their game plan to Wright.
The Yankees still throw Bay fastballs. Same deal when he was with the Sox.
CB
I agree. It seems like the lack of experience by Cervelli and Hughes have come back to haunt this team in this game and the game against the Sox. Everyone knows that Bay and Wright can’t hit a fastball inside and they swing at breaking balls away.
Cervelli is young. In any ‘game’ (board game/card game/video game) young people find something that works and hammer it until it doesn’t.
Cervelli has seen the success Hughes got doing it 1 way, so he might not be open to changing the approach. Its just an experience thing.
Let go Yankees !!! Positive Vibes !!! This will be a Yankees Classic …. and like Michael Kay says, the Yanks are undefeated on Classic !!!
where the heck is Russo and why isn’t he playing instead of Winn???
First pitch was not a strike.
“Wright swings through an inside fastball? Why I never!”
I know. It’s very odd. Wright’s bat looks slow and they sped it up the first AB with the cutter. Then tried to go outside with the fastball in the second at bat.
That was a nice sequence with the curve ball outside to start it off then fastball up, then fastball inside to end it.
He’s not using both sides of the plate as well as he was.
23 year old pitcher – 24 year old catcher is going to have some bumps.
Final pitch was not a strike.
maybe javy stole the mojo of the rest of the rotation?
Put the shift on and pitch him away. Hilarious. Come on Tex this is just sad.
LOL, Orlando quits, so do Yankees.
Does Teixeira know it’s almost June?
Well, doesn’t Phil get the scouting reports, too? He’s got the ball in his hand and he should throw the pitch he wants to. Granted, he’s just a kid and he’s not going to take control like a veteran would.
Another great at bat..3 pitches and an easy out. Give Tex a week off or something. I am sick and tired of watching him look like a pitcher at the plate.
You all know I’m not reactionary, but Teixeira needs to sit.
Finally Hughes figured out what he should of done to Wright. Throw high and inside on Wright. He has a long swing he cant catch up.
The Yankee offense is just in one of those funks they have every year. Also they are facing a good pitcher.
Tex needs lasik, 3 called strikes!
You can?t call a pitcher a ?pumpkin? based on an outing and a half. You also can?t call him an ace after a month.
*****************
But wait people on here had him and andy pettite neck and neck for the cy young award this year. Can we agree that cervelli and gardner are now showing why they are backups?
Andrew Brackman turned in a very good 6 innings for Tampa. 6 innings, 3 hits, 1 run (earned), 0 walks, 5 strikeouts. Only issue was a hit batter and a wild pitch.
I don’t know if Girardi needs to have a discussion with these guys about their hitting, but right now this team is not playing Yankee baseball, this is the stuff of the Seattle Mariners lineup.
CB, is that because Phil is in a slump or because of Cervelli (not working both sides of the plate, that is)? Phil pitched very well to Frankie before this – in Detroit and Fenway – so why the problems now?
“Put the shift on and pitch him away. Hilarious. Come on Tex this is just sad.”
They’re setting him up to roll over on the ball because they feel like he’s going to try to pull the ball even if it’s outside.
shameless
I don’t understand how Posada would have made Hughes pitch more effectively to Bay.
For one thing, Bay is the Mets #3 hitter, so wouldn’t they have an extensive scouting report on him that they’d go over before the game and between innings?
And also, the Yankees could barely get Jason Bay out when he was with the Red Sox and Posada was behind the plate for most of those games. He doesn’t have some secret formula for beating Bay.
Hughes is still throwing strikes. Sometimes they’re going to get hit. This game could have gotten out of hand early. But we’re still in it.
Why the hell are they interviewing Cora? Whats next a Chad Moeller interview from fox.
HAHA @ you guys blaming Tex.
Strikes 1 and 3 were both balls! Bottom Line!
and Tex still thinks this is the postseason..
At this point, Mark Teixeira can’t be in the lineup everyday.
Nobody on this team is killing them anymore than Teixiera.
If you are going to take 3 fastballs down the middle of the plate as often as he does, you can no longer play him everyday.
Too much of a liability.
Posada can’t come back soon enough. What is it, three more weeks?
I don’t know what to do about Tex………..
Pelfrey is good, he is, but this team when it’s going bad can just make garbage pitchers look good.
Tex looks terrible. It’s almost like something is wrong with him. He really has not hit consistenly well since the regular season last year. He was mostly a non-entity in the playoffs.
Why are they spending so much time with this Mets guy???? there IS a game on, you know?
Was that it for Phil last inning? I believe Park is warming up………….
When your offense is shut down night after night, you can’t keep tipping your cap to the pitchers.
‘
Eventually you have to go out there and swing the bats. Even good pitchers can have bad outings once in a while, so saying that they just are getting bad breaks or facing a guy who’s on isn’t going to cut it.
Most of the runs they have scored lately have been off of Tampa’s garbage time pitchers in the 8th and 9th innings of games which haven’t really been that close. This is why you can’t take such a black and white approach to the numbers, because they haven’t been scoring many runs when it counts.
Jeter hitting to the infield 2009: 51% 2010: 64%
GB – what got into Brackman?
Thye are spending wayyyy to mculh time with Cora. Way too much time. This is reidiculous!
They were strikes. Stop with the umpire nonsense.
He’s barely hitting .200 and Brett Gardner is outslugging him.
They have waited long enough for him. It’s almost June. Time to sit him.
I think Jerry wants to choke Cora …. he can’t because the knife is in his back ..LOL !
Joe, at least………….
Gee, they actually toook the time to say Cano got a hit? And they still interview Cora. What the…..????
Good news, the team we’re closest to in the standings is down 8-1 through 2 innings.
Granderson too!
Wilpons are paying for this Cora spot
Cora will be interviewed till the end of the 5th.. Hopefully its a long interview.
And now theoy’re talking to Cora aobut Cano being “lazy”!
ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!
I don’t see them ever sitting Tex – and how long are we talking for ? A game? Two games? I just don’t see them doing it…
Some fans act like the season is over already because the Yankees are in a slump. How many years have you seen the Yankees slump at some point in the first half ? I do think we should worry about somethings but the team will come out of this.
Can we agree that cervelli and gardner are now showing why they are backups?
——
And when they get hot again, will that shut you up for good? Dumb troll.
The whole freakin’ team is in a slump right now. Mo, Jeter, Tex, Arod, Hughes, CC, Burnett, Joba, Gardner, Cervelli.
I don’t know what it is but is probably psychological and they will get out of it soon enough and when they do, I will rub it in your faces, trolls.
There’s a game going on, and these sickening individuals are discussing life and childhood with Alex Cora. Alex Cora. Alex Cora. Alex Cora. Who in their right mind cares about Alex Cora. Or what Joe Buck and Tim McCarver have to say.
And Alex Cora just lied.
When was Cano benched??????????????????????????????????????????
And now Joe Buck is saying that Cano used to be lazy???????????????????????
The only thing lazy was Fox hiring you, Joe.
THATS NOT A STRIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for all those who want jeter and tex to get some off days, who are we replacing them with? Our bench is pretty sad right now….
Pelfrey sure needs all the help he is getting on pitches away to the lefties.
It’s not like he’s throwing a shutout or anything?
They should throw out some lineups with Russo at SS and Miranda at 1b
After that Tampa series not too many Yankees seemed too upset
This team seemed pretty complacent and content in themselves, even Girardi was like well its a long season, such and such happens.
If you watch these players right now, these guys do not look hungry at all.
This performance is an absolute disgrace on the heels of the miserable one last night. They won that game because a starving rookie was able to do what Jeter, Gardner, Tex, Arod, Cano, Swisher couldn’t do get men in from scoring position.
Back to back nights this offense has looked putrid.
“Thye are spending wayyyy to mculh time with Cora. Way too much time. This is reidiculous!”
Cora is seen as a future manager. That’s why they’re interviewing him in this fashion.
It’s ridiculous but I think that’s why they did this.
And now FOX is getting rid of Cora as soon as things go our way.
3-2 in Yankee stadium
they won’t score here
NO !!!!! Cora is our good luck charm, why end the interview ???? … I think Buck and Tim sensed it ….
Too bad we couldn’t score Cano there. I think it was a good hold. Cmon Cisco Be Great here.
Finally.
Will Cervelli come through here? Please please please please please. :fingerscrossed:
Man I would of sent Cano with two outs.
so there are like 4 people who are paid to work on this blog and we can’t get a single update???
Pete Abe updates his Red Sox blog everytime Francona farts & we get nothing?
all uj people clamoring bout cervelli with RISP
here ya go
1st home run of the year for Frankie COME ON!
That Cora interview lasted longer than William Henry Harrison’s presidency.
Macfan, how do you know how the Yankees feel? How do you know what complacency and lack of hunger looks like? They’re struggling terribly, but I guess I don’t get how any Yankee fan thinks this team doesn’t care.
CR9, just out of curiousity, do Yankee players ever do wrong? Do umps ever get anything right?
I wish Posada were batting right now
YES! 1 run. BIG!
MacFan
All teams slump and go through injuries. You act like the Yankees have never been in a slump in their history.
Gift.
I’ll take it
I died In 40 Days!
/Simpson’d
Pinch hit for Winn please.
200 million for this? May 22nd, 2010 at 9:01 pm
But wait people on here had him and andy pettite neck and neck for the cy young award this year. Can we agree that cervelli and gardner are now showing why they are backups?
Gardner’s batting .315 this year. A few games of a slump, but still .308 in May. He has the best O-Swing% on the team and the best contact%.
Cervelli is in a similar slump, but he’s batting .333 for May and .342 for the year. His RISP stats are ridiculous . I’d say he’s a pretty good. Now, stop trolling.
Cervelli just made you eat those words.
Can we please pinch hit for old man Winn?? Miranda, Russo, CC anyone?!!
We will take Ugly right now. For Sure
This game is FAR from over …. go grab another beer or two folks !!! …. hope they bring Cora back !!!
Okay – I’ll take that.
Please, Winn. Please, please, please, please.
:fingerscrossedagain:
Cervelli is one lucky son of a gun!!
The Yankees would have scored 4-5 runs by now if this was Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park, lol. Cano’s flyball in the first inning would have been a 2-run double and Swisher’s double would have been a HR.
oh no, Winn
Winn with a gap double to score 2 COME ON!
@Nick in SF: I was waiting for them to ask about his recommended summer reading list!
Nick, was he wearing his cap? If so, that would explain it. If not, then Cora will be getting pneumonia pretty soon………
Can’t believe he let Winn hit.
He puts together good ABs with 2 outs and nobody on in front of the pitcher, and then swings weakly at the 2nd pitch in a key spot! ************************* JOKE!
In Winn We Trust.
He sucks.
Ugh, Winn. I miss having Swisher in the 8 hole.
That must mean Phil is out of this game…………because they will PH for him if he comes up.
Phooey.
At least they got on the board.
How do you allow Winn to bat in that situation?!! I am soo tired of that old fart with zero bat speed. It’s absolutely unreal how the biggest spots in the game always find him.
Lets send Hughes back out for the 6th in hopes to be able to pinch hit for him in the 7th.
Too late, lol….
What a stupid at bat by Winn.
How is Matsusaka no hitting the Phillies?
That’s why I wish anyone but Randy Winn was in that position. We need to get Granderson, Posada back as soon as possible. Even the kid Russo would have put up a better at bat. No more Randy Winn !
Winn is pretty consistent..you know, in that soul killing way.
Is Cora now destined to contract pneumonia and have it treated with castor oil?
winn has gotten maybe 1 big hit so far this year. he has come up a ton of times late and tight and failed basically every time.
how clueless is texiera?? his streakiness is maddening.
Winn had to bat. Thames can’t play the OF (ankle AND other reasons) and Miranda is no OF
News flash to Girardi. Winn blows horribly.
Can’t pinch hit with the pitcher on deck.
Can’t burn 2 bench guys in the 6th inning or you will run out of options later in the game.
Say what you will about Winn, but he’s hitting 10 points higher than Suxeira.
Why is Russo not in this game? He had 2 hits last night, and the Yankees need all the offense they can get right now.
Defense means nothing if you can’t score any runs. Look at the way the Red Sox played early this year as a prime example.
Every game it seems like Randy Winn comes up in a crucial spot with runners on base late in the game and he consistently fails. Maybe it’s time to try some other players and see if anyone can do a better job, because as of now Winn has contributed so little that it doesn’t really matter if you sit him.
Jeezus H. Krist… At this point, I offer teams money to take Winn off our hands.
Poor Cora – his managerial career is over before it began.
I want Miranda to play 1st one night and I want Tex to have a full night off, not a DH night off. I don’t care what Miranda does in his place. the point is to get Tex a breather. Like they did with Javy. A mental break from hitting.
“# Betsy – Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) May 22nd, 2010 at 9:09 pm
Macfan, how do you know how the Yankees feel? How do you know what complacency and lack of hunger looks like? They’re struggling terribly, but I guess I don’t get how any Yankee fan thinks this team doesn’t care.”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
You’re right I don’t know how they personally feel, I can only go by the comments I heard afterwards.
Either way this team has to get its act together and start playing consistent baseball again. They do no look very good right now in execution, irrespective of what I know or don’t know about them personally.
I can’t believe Girardi played Winn tonight over Russo. He provides absolutely nothing for this team. Just let Russo play.
Has Hughes thrown any changeups tonight? How many?
Joe from Long Island May 22nd, 2010 at 9:04 pm
GB – what got into Brackman?
———————————————————————————————————————-
Joe, not really sure. I haven’t seen him since early this year, but, from the radio broadcasts, apparently somebody told him to back off on the fastball, and, voila, control. It’s the same thing that they told Koufax to do back in 1960.
Joe needs to give more time to Russo. Why does it seem like Randy always comes up in a big spot.
1-2 for Hughes
He certainly seems cutter happy tonight. (Again).
The best swing of the AB for Pagan is on the curve 1-2 . How???
For those of you who are curious about Alex Cora, ABC is broadcasting the complete 2-hour pilot of the Alex Cora Interview before tomorrow night’s season finale of Alex Cora — the Joe & Tim Interview.
Throw a change man.
Where is Josh and Sam? Are they snoozing?
dice-bb throwing a no-no…
Whats up with the fireworks
That was dreadful.
See that’s what I mean with Hughes and the curve. It’s 1-2. Hughes throws a curve – it’s up some, but a poor hitter like Angel Pagan is completely on top of the ball. He’s out in front a little but he has no problem handling the pitch and almost doubled with 2 strikes on him.
Of course Winn misplays that ball…
Wow, Winn – ugly
just awesome.
See another reason why Rany Winn should go !
OK I was wrong. Winn is a joke.
Winn..as I said…consistent
Winn is in for defense? lol Really why isn’t Russo playing tonight?
geez
That has to be an error, terrible play
Wow that is dreadful
Ok, I can live with bad ABs. But this MOTHER ******** ***** of all ******* just screwed us into a leadoff double.
Get him out of there. He cant even play any defense.
AND NOW WINN MISSES A ROUTINE FLY BALL
Why is Girardi still playing him? He is not even good defensively, and he can’t hit a lick.
Randy Winn just gave away an at bat with a chance to score runs, and then missed a ROUTINE fly ball to left that he was standing right under.
stupid Winn… I hope Girardi choked on some seeds when he saw Winn misplay that.
Let me guess Winn is allowed to play because of his great defense? That must be the reason. He is absolutely pathetic. Can’t hit at all and now drops a ball.
I can’t believe that was ruled a double. He overran the ball.
Patrick
It only can be an error if Winn touched it. I dont know if he did. Im too busy FUMING!
Kevin Russo could have done that.
What a horrible play.
Granderson can’t get back soon enough.
Good lord, I’d rather have half the AAA OF up here instead of Winn right now.
Winn cant hit or play defense..worthless.. Great play by tex
Cant hit/Cant field please release this garbage
Damn Tex.
Then maybe the Yankees need to completely revamp Phil’s curve………….if he can’t get down, then go back to the slider? I would hate to do that since the slider apparently puts stress on the arm.
“# Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 9:09 pm

All teams slump and go through injuries. You act like the Yankees have never been in a slump in their history.”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Well I thought their slump was against
Detroit, Minnesota, Boston, Tampa recently, now we have to include the Mets in that group they are slumping against, yikes.
Somehow that just doesn’t jive. Even when you are slumping you can still bring in a man from 3rd with less than 2 outs.
I don’t know how Winn doesn’t get an error on that. Not fair to hughes
Winn trying to do his best impression of Thames.
Alright ! I got mad at Joba this week. But Randy is really becoming a big issue.
# sunny615 May 22nd, 2010 at 9:18 pm
stupid Winn… I hope Girardi choked on some seeds when he saw Winn misplay that.
good, best post tonight
We just got a run on the board to get back in the game, and Winn just costs us a leadoff double. UNBELIEVABLE.
At least Tex hasn’t imploded defensively
Randy Winn is losing friends here.
OMG, TIM MCCARVER JUST MENTIONED NEIL ALLEN!!!!!!
Winn YOU SUCK!
Gotta play the infield in NO?
A double!?!? That’s an error
Winn was supposed to be there to field.
Okay. I’m done with him. Done.
I can put up with the at-bats.
But he’s there because of his fielding – that was why they got him, not to hit, but to field. He’s shown no special prowess, and they can’t afford this.
I thought they might retain him when Granderson gets back, but clearly they cannot. He is not adding any value at all to this team.
Nice play by Tex. Hopefully that saves the inning.
As you can all tell, my patience has worn thin.
I don’t mind the slumps – teams and players slump. But this is unacceptable play.
I miss you Granderson
That run is huge out at third base right now, especially after you just scored a run to chip away.
You cannot give back a run like that right after you got yourself back in this game. Just an inexcusably pathetic play by Randy Winn, and an almost equally clueless decision by Girardi in sitting the guy who carried out offense last night for a guy who can’t play defense whatsoever.
2-0 – ugh
Winn better not start another game. A total waste of a roster spot.
Oddly enough – you have to actually touch the ball in order for it to be an error. Winn misplayed it SO badly, he didn’t even touch it.
RELEASE WINN!!!!
Wow – what pitch was that? 3-0? Phil has nothing.
Hughes falling apart. (More than he has already that is.)
Phil again this game has been sticking with the cutter, and it has killed his pitch count. He’s not sharp at all tonight. Pagan got 5 for fouls before getting on base.
Having to take out Hughes here would really hurt the team going forward in this game, because whoever comes in is going to have to immediately be pinch hit for since they are trailing in this game.
The bullpen is short as it is tonight, so they really need Hughes to finish this inning himself.
Thing is Winn has had no real “ups.” Teams/players have ups and downs – as Hughes is, Joba has, Tex is, etc. Winn has had no real “ups.”
When the Mets nearly grazed Swisher and Tex, no mention of it.
But Joe Buck is mentioning it GRAZED Francoeur! Whoopidee Doo, Joe. Go sniff the Red Sox jock straps, Joe. Oh wait, too late.
Betsy you are overreacting by a lot
Hughes has thrown 10% offspeed this game.
Thats not gonna get it done.
“I want Miranda to play 1st one night and I want Tex to have a full night off”
————————————
Tonight was the perfect night for that. Righty on the mound. Tomorrow is Santana and I really doubt that Girardi is going to play Miranda. You know Girardi is obsessed with matchups. If he sits tomorrow he would have 2 days off.
Macfan
Teams slump. And they can lose to bad teams as well. If you followed baseball at all you would know this. Also they are mssing a lot of important guys in their lineup.
Is that a fake Doreen?
Big pitch coming
Yeah Winn’s defense, what defense, this guys is a hack stiff.
I said this guy wasn’t doing us any favors in the field when people talked about he is a good defender, he never robs any hits, he never closes balls in the gap, his arm stinks.
6 more days before Curtis Granderson is activated. Can’t get here soon enough.
I hope Cash is watching. That has to be the end of regular playing time for Randy “prevents a” Winn.
I’m usually a pretty positive guy but I think its getting pretty close to the point that you just can’t play Winn anymore.
God, I have never thought a Yankee so useless since Womack. And when I say useless – I mean a bag of spit up sunflower seeds has more use than Winn on this team.
Patrick, how so?
Why is Winn still starting for us?! He couldn’t possibly be worse than any of our minor league outfielders! At least those guys all have higher upsides. Winn cant hit at all and he isn’t even good defensively.
Phil can not put anyone away with 2 strikes; how does he get so many Ks?
Patrick, how so?
—
Phil has nothing? That’s absurd
Yes. Big Strikeout!!! 1 more out and we can win this game!
Can’t score that a double. That’s an error all the way. It’s a routine play for a ML OF.
Hometown scoring.
Got to DFA him when Granderson gets back.
There is nothing left to his game.

and, yet, he’s outproducing a $20 mil player in the month of May.
CR9 -
No, not a fake Doreen. Just a ticked off Doreen.
I’m patient and supportive, but I’m not –
Great strikeout by Phil! -
– stupid.
Very big. Only matters though if we can get cora. Let phil pitch to him
Stop with the “missing important guys in the lineup” excuse. If Jeter and Teixeira were hitting the ball whatsoever, they’d be more than fine offensively.
They have more than enough talent in that lineup, they are just playing like garbage right now, and it’s partly their own fault for having bad approaches at the plate.
Jerkface, that is what I’ve been talking about. That’s why I never understood why, during Phil’s great stretch, it was ok for him to be throwing merely FB and cutters.
Has Hughes forgotten how to throw his changeup? Is that a feel pitch?
i hate winn!!!
Winn needs to go. The guy can’t even field now. So there is no point in keeping him.
I really hate giving away a roster spot to a guy like Winn who has no special skills and is on the decline. When the Yankees signed him, I thought it was a good thing because the bench needed a veteran presence. Now I’m thinking I would rather have some young guys up like Golson and Russo who can at least bring upside.
didn’t know DiceK has a no hitter going
Come on Phil!
No way that’s a double…he was under it and it nearly hit him in the head…that’s routine for a big leauger..
I don’t understand why they don’t just DFA Winn now and bring up Golson or Huffman. I’d take either at this point.
GB7 -
I understand that. But they don’t have a lot tied up in Winn. They have a lot tied up in Tex. They have to deal with that. They don’t have to deal with Winn.
(Plus I’ve reached my saturation point – don’t know why – I think it was the 3-pitch strikeout to Tex and then the total misplay by Winn)
Doreen
I was not calling you out. You’re not stupid. I just thought it was an impostor. You have every right to be angry with Winn after that defensive misplay. Hopefully, Phil can pick up Winn here.
Kevin Russo is better than Winn…Cashman got overconfident and stupid this offseason….rushing on Nick Johnson, getting Winn….thanks Cashman for messing up our Championship team
Jerkface, that is what I’ve been talking about. That’s why I never understood why, during Phil’s great stretch, it was ok for him to be throwing merely FB and cutters.
–
Well I’m of the belief that if you can get them out with your fastball, keep doing it.
On the other hand, if you have a pitch supposedly as good as Hughes curve is. you should throw it. He doesn’t need to throw it put away, but he will start off like 2 batters a game with his curve, why not mix it in more first pitch? Pitching backwards works for guys with crap fastballs but imagine hughes pitching backwards a bit with his heat.
I can’t believe they are letting him throw 115 pitches. Thanks Winn…
“Phil can not put anyone away with 2 strikes; how does he get so many Ks?”
Because he gets to 2 strikes on every hitter, he’s bound to run into some Ks.
Who will be Randy Winn’s last LoHud friend?
Matt
They are slumping. So missing those guys makes matters worse.
Winn on the decline is like saying a hurricane is breezy.
Screw that. Alex Cora? Really?
GB7 -
The difference with Winn is if he’s not fielding well, he’s not doing what he was particularly valued for. He was brought here to be a defensive replacement, who could perhaps get some timely hits or productive outs. He is barely doing the latter, and defensively, no great shakes as far as I can tell.
Tex is at least -
shoot –
fielding well, still.
Cashman won’t DFA Winn because by doing so, it would just mean he messed up by signing him.
Damn. Nice try Hughes.
wow, 115 pitches in less than 6 innings……….
Awful job, just awful………….1-2 and he can’t get Cora out?
If he would just throw a curveball it would be a guranteed strikeout. Cora would have stunned. Stupidly called game by Cervelli here.
If he would just throw a curveball it would be a guranteed strikeout. Cora would have stunned. Stupidly called game by Cervelli here.
He had him at 2 strikes. Darn it.
We’re still in this game.
WE WILL WIN THIS GAME!
Winn is absolute garbage.
Winn will get removed now on the double switch
Yay Winn. Congratulations on making the lead bigger. I hope you see the unemployment line tomorrow morning.
Winn has to go. He looks overpowered at the plate (Papelbon AB), and cant play the field. Costs the Yanks a run today,
Not to be more negative, but no blog updates in a huge series like this? I dont know, this blog has really gone down hill. Pete had the lineups on the site 3 hours before the game, now its customary about 45 minutes before. Checking out his blog now, he updates close to every inning.
Oh well
Nick,
Did Winn ever have a LoHud friend?
RELEASE WINN during the commercial break please
117 pitches and gives up a hit to the back up infielder. Thanks Winn you loser.
Not Phil’s best outing but hardly his worst. I just don’t understand the panic from most people around here. Betsy you are out of control, how is this an awful job? Get a freaking grip
Horrible job by Hughes. Can’t let Alex Cora beat you after getting ahead 0-2.
Very bad outing for Hughes given the competition.
CR9 -
I didn’t mean it to seem like you were calling me stupid.
I was just saying my patience has a limit – and I can see what I can see, that’s all.
The ole 91 mph cutter down the middle, works every time.
(but it was a good pitch selection, just bad location, cora kept trying to go the other way on the fastball)
What do the baseball gods say about Winn?
Tough the give them a run back after you finally score one of your own…just can’t make those kinda mistakes especially in games like this one.
I dont want to hear about Hughes changeup EVER AGAIN!
He doesnt throw it when they pull his fastball foul or foul it back
He doesnt throw it when hes behind in the count
He doesnt throw it when hes way ahead in the count
Patrick, what exactly have you seen from Phil tonight that you take away as a positive?
Oh wow, Girardi just pulled Winn.
I can’t believe that Winn play was scored a double. hughes got badly screwed there. It should have been a 6 ip, 3 ER outing for him.
Dice-K has a no hitter through 7 innings.
seriously, it’s a crime to lose to a weak team like Mets.
Winn killed Hughes.
And Phil did a great job to get those two outs.
But you cannot get beat by a poor hitter like Cora with 2 strikes.
He’s really struggled to finish hitters off. It’s as if the at bat gets to a point where Hughes just runs out of ideas or options on what to do.
He should be deadly in 2 strike counts.
Phil has 117 pitches, and a lefty at bat, what is Joe thinking keeping him in to score another run?
Hughes is throwing the cutter way too much. High fastballs and curveballs are his out pitches.
Beaten by Alex Cora in a 2-strike count, on another freaking cutter. Just disgraceful.
Once you got the strikeout of Francoeur, it was all on Hughes and he failed to get out a terrible hitter who he had in a 2-strike hole.
When the offense is as pathetic as ours has been tonight, you had to hold it right there. That run they just allowed probably just put away the game. Giving it right back after you chip away and put your first run on the board is just inexcusable, and probably swung a lot of momentum back the Mets way.
Alex Cora somehow gained more talent during his marathon interview.
tyler –
I was a friend of Winn.
Winn is womack’s illegitimate son.
Patrick, ok – you’re entitled to your opinion about me, but let’s see you get on everyone else who’s killing Phil. He deserves it.
Patrick, what exactly have you seen from Phil tonight that you take away as a positive?
—
5.2 innings, 4 runs, 7 K’s is in no way an “awful job”. Calling it that is embarrassing.
He kept his team in the game and that last outing is 100% Randy Winn’s fault
Winn has already cost the Yanks 1 game this season and he definitley didn’t help tonight giving them another run. Didn’t catch the ball against Boston. Can’t hit a sack fly against the Tigers or a hit against Boston. Pathetic…
Doreen
Anybody whose patience did not get tested after that Winn misplay would be a saint
Pardon me, that last run is 100% Randy Winn’s fault.
Not going well so time for some trivia …. who sang this one ?
Gotta blame it on something
Gotta blame it on something
Blame it on the Wynn that was falling, falling
Blame it on the stars that did shine at night
Whatever you do don’t put the blame on you
Blame it on the Wynn yeah yeah
You can blame it on the Wynn
Cos the Wynn don’t mind
And the Wynn don’t care
You got to blame it on something
(Blame it on the Wynn)
(Blame it on the Wynn)
Whatever you do don’t put the blame on you
Blame it on the Wynn yeah, yeah
You can blame it on the Wynn
LOL Russo in for defense. Girardi completely embarrassing that clown winn
Girardi should never had played Winn/Loser. Talk about total worthlessness. No value at all.
He pulled Winn because he was the last hitter, ot because of the misplay.
Any chance he gets DFA immediately? please?
I wonder what Colin Curtis is thinking.
Patrick,
he pitched poorly tonight. He’s facing an awful hitting team and he was poor.
It’s the growing pains you suffer with young pitchers.
Sometimes, it’s tough to watch.
We’ve gotta hear what a double switch is from this know nothing piece of carcillo clown, loser, pathetic, disgrace, Tim McCarver.
Get back to your nursing home, Tim. You’re a senile hag.
Randy Winn needs to be released once Granderson gets back.
Never want to see this guy again
Betsy you’re wrong, it’s getting ridiculous at this point. Settle down
So now Russo can play LF but he couldn’t start the game out there. Makes absolutely no sense..
Joba Tips His Cap
The Rays failed against an even worse team the Astros. It happens !
“Who will be Randy Winn’s last LoHud friend?”
PFOR?
How could you possibly keep saying “we will win the game” every time they add runs on top of their lead?
Looks like someone is in denial about the way they are playing right now. Who are you trying to convince, yourself or us?
Winn was pulled as part of a double switch. You guys need to watch some more NL ball lol.
winn has just been released
Not a great outing by Phil, but good enough to win if he gets a few breaks. Couple of ground balls through the infield, a bloop broken bat single and a terrible error-non-error by Winn.
Offense needs to get untracked – change something, give new guys a chance move the batting order around, make Gardner bunt the next 5 times he is at bat. Do something different with the offense.
Hughes was unlucky in this game. A bloop hit. Misplayed balls. He threw 88 strikes. That run should not go against Hughes.
Park is absolute batting practice. He NEVER EVER gets anyone out.
Scouting has caught up to Phil a little bit I think…it was bound to happen. He needs to adjust back now and keep himself a moving target. Not a bad outing but not to the caliber we all know he can perform at. The Winn play was a killer.
Im in one of those moods tonight!
The Celtics get themselves an easy victory.
They are 4 wins away from a NBA title.
I have to come to terms with it.
I cant let it affect me.
Dice-K is getting gifted a no hitter.
And these clowns Tim and Joe are as anti-Yankee as ever.

He didn’t pitch well but he didn’t pitch poorly. It seems like Phil’s hot start has distorted fans’ expectations of him.
Everyone take a chill pill. This is baseball, not football.
I hope Winn is dfa’ed right now. Just send him to Japan or Korea… I think they need a bat boy.
Patrick, I’m going to be civil even if you can’t – 4 runs in 6 and it could have been worse. I don’t care how many strikeouts Phil had – he looked terrible; he did a bad job tonight. You think he’s an ace right now, so I don’t expect you to think differently. You seriously are not concerned about Phil’s refusal to throw anything but FB and cutters? About his refusal to throw a change? If not, then fine………..we have nothing to discuss.
I don’t know when Randy Winn will be released by Brian Cashman,
Randy Winn is hot garbage
I detest this guy with every fiber of my being.
Not only did he end a rally attempt AGAIN in another game, but he then makes an atrocious outfield play that cost the team.
Phil did not pitch a great game, but I agree that this game is really on the offense. It hurt that he couldn’t put away Cora, but he was pitching to a batter that he should never have had to face.
Well, can this team score 3-4 runs while holding the Mets to zero?
Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 9:34 pm
Park is absolute batting practice. He NEVER EVER gets anyone out.
************
He just did. Try again
Castillo opened up for an inside pitch before Chop even delivered. Mets relaying signs/location?
Might as well move Chan Ho to the dollar menu along with Wynn.
Heck, offer them both as a combo.
P-AGAINST is overwhelming P-FOR.
I cannot believe the Mets keep getting 2 out base hits!
As long as Randy Winn, is a Yankee, I’ll be his friend.
I’ll always pull for him to succeed, and will never ever give up on him.
It’s not 100% Winn’s fault when you have an 0-2 count on a non-hitter and can’t finish him off.
That’s on Phil.
Nearly 120 pitches, 4 runs, and put the team in an early 2 run hole in less than 6 innings of work is not a good outing.
Russo, Jeter, Gardner……Lets’ go Yankee bats!
One run was scored on a bloop broken bat single. One run was scored on a misplayed leadoff double.
Was Phil at his best, hell no but he wasn’t terrible either.

———————————————————————————————————————-
I wasn’t referring to Teixeira, Doreen.
“Hmmmm, at least Pat M and I were Friends of Randy on the LoHud. Maybe there were more?”
Being Friends isn’t good enough these days and you know it.
Everything depends on the adjective.
If not for the botched ground ball by Pelfrey, they would still have not put a run on the board today.
Giving up that extra run hurt so much because they have had so much trouble putting even anything on the board lately. Randy Winn cost them a run on that botched fly ball, but also cost them a chance to score 1 or more additional runs with that weak at bat he had pulling off of a sinker down and away in a 1-0 count.
When things aren’t going well, sometimes you need to shake things up. Starting the same guys in the same positions in the field/lineup and expecting them to magically turn it around when they refuse to change their approach doesn’t do anything.
Hughes is going to be a top starter but people here need to remember that all young pitchers go through growing pains. He has the goods to do it so why be so negative about Hughes.
“4 runs in 6 and it could have been worse. I don’t care how many strikeouts Phil had…”
Well, if he’d had fewer strikeouts, then it would have been worse.
I like this Russo kid!
Over the years, one thing I realize that changing things around does not get teams out of slumps.
They just have to play their way out of it.
This team is too good, have too much pride and heart to allow themselves stay down for too long.
Trust me. They will be out of this funk before you know it. We just gotta stay patience.
Yes, easier said than done but we’ve been through this before.
Russo
Nice start to the inning. Russo could have been starting this game.
Yankee players just don’t care at all. I can tell that.
Seriously, if those make millions a year don’t care, why should stupid fans care?
And he gets a hit.
Dice k has a no hitter and yes I’m jinxing him
Of course Russo couldn’t start tonight….
Everyone knows the Yankees don’t like scoring until the 7th inning
Just imagine we started last night’s hero instead of Wynn ….. wow, now that would be a great idea Joe ? No ?
Erica, a letter?
Se this is why Russo should have been in the lineup. Will Girardi finally give up on Winn. It’s like the Cody Ransom love affair all over again.
Russo can really swing the stick…still got a chance against the Met pen.
“hate tim mccarver. hate joe buck. hate chris berman. hate michael holley. hate boston. peter gammons, peter king. peter gammons. ken rosenthal. kevin millar on FOX. dennis eckersley. chris rose. every filthy bostonian that has ever existed.”
NICE!
Like I once said before the Yankees should release this piece of crap Winn and call up Golson until Granderson returns towards the end of the month.
Winn can’t hit for average or power, drive in runs, get on base, or steal bases, now he can’t play the field competently either. Big deal he’s hit a three-run homerun and drove in two with another hit, two big hits through 43 games, and callup Kevin Russo drove in two runs last night.
Why did Kevin Russo after last nights great game not start tonight…..why, why, why??? You could tell last night he was a pretty good player and now gets a hit tonight….
Serious question here. Is this the worst broadcast of all time?
Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 9:38 pm

I would put Tony Womack on the roster right now if it ment getting rid of Winn..
Tom in NJ-
I am waiting to send a special one to Tex. It will happen this inning
When the Yankees offense is struggling like it is now, they should play guys like Russo and Golson, who bring energy. Pena and Cervelli were clutch last year and provided a spark…Gardner helped carry the team the first 6 weeks of the season. Cano came up big in ’05 and so did Melky in ’06 filling in for Matsui.
I just think playing kids who are hungry and eager will yield better results than playing an old veteran like Winn. Remember the Ivan Rodriguez experiment? Or Richie Sexson? Go with the kids, especially the ones who have speed and play defense, which is sorely lacking with the vets of the team.
I was called an “idiot” two nights ago for sticking up for Winn who helped the Yankees score the runs they did.
Oh, my. Russo.
They should give this guy a box to stand on when he interviews the players. He looks really foolish staring up like that. Plus I hate his vocal cadence and pandering manner.
Look, I’d love for Winn to turn it around. He’s being given that chance. He has to make that play. If he continues as he is (and Russo can continue hitting), I don’t see how Winn survives on this team.
well sheee-oot – a single by Russo. Hey Winn… did you get a look at that? Putz.

Because we needed all that gold glove defense of Randy Winn , Bwahahahaah
The one guy that knocked in runs for us yesterday Cashman rested for that thing called Winn to kill a rally and botch a play that led to a run.
Betsy/SJ44,
I like both of you but you’re both acting like children right now. Take a step back and look at the big picture. Phil Hughes is the 5th starter and he pitched like a 5th starter tonight. Didn’t go long into the game but gave his team a chance to win. That 4th run is all on Randy Winn and you both know it. I don’t understand how a pitcher can look bad while racking up 7 K’s along the way. And I don’t see how Hughes is “refusing” to throw his offspeed stuff, do you think he says to Eiland and Cervelli, “I refuse to throw my offspeed stuff!” ? Come on, get a grip.
I’m sick of discussing this and frankly I’m a bit sick of this blog. When two of the better posters on the blog go a bit mad I can’t really take it anymore.
Hughes wasn’t great tonight. Not finishing hitters off with 2 strikes and not mixing pitches better wasn’t optimal.
That said Hughes wasn’t horrible or anything. He was averagish. He’s going to have starts like that and when he does the offense will need to step up and win games.
The offense has been horrendous tonight. Absolutely terrible so far.
Most unprofessional broadcast I have ever heard.

Is that the real SJ?
Dearest Mark Teixiera-

GB was referring to Jeter, IMO.
How sad is the scouting report on Mark Teixeira.
A 20 year old kid rushed up from AA whose only real weapon right now is his ability to throw in the mid 90′s starts Tex off with a first pitch change up.
That is just amazing.
And Tex of course swings through it.

This is the 4th Red Sox no-hitter since we have gotten one
Makes me absolutely sick. And he actually is no-hitting a great team. Now then Boson Olney compares this no-hitter to the Yankee ones and showers his praise on the Sox, it will have merit unlike Jonathan Sanchez against the Padres
This night couldn’t be any worse. Dice-K is going to be in the news all week for this. And we get to here Nomar and Chris Red Sox Rose in the postgame slobbing on him and Olney, Red Sox Riccardi, Nomar, Kruk and all those losers saying he is going to the HOF.
Hate Boston so much
whew- I feel better that I retyped that
The AB to Cora was disappointing but Hughes is probably going to have a several outings like this as a 23 year old..he wasn’t going to pitch to a 1.3 ERA all season.

Finally, some sanity brought to the blog. Exactly right CB, he wasn’t awful or whatever other adjective you want to use, he was okay.
Meanwhile, Teixeira is a non-factor at the plate. Girardi has to think about dropping him in the order, he’s killing this team
Tex just stinks right now
way to swing at ball 4
He could have just taken the walk. That’s all your fault, Erica, for spelling Mark’s name wrong!
Really, Tex?
anyone is surprised by Tex’s K? not me.
Time to drop Teixeira in the lineup.
That was a ball ! Will he stop swinging at that crap. Tex needs to sit down.
SJ – that’s an easily catchable fly ball! This is the big leagues. How can you excuse Winn for that? Yeah, the guy that throws the ball is responsible for what happens to the ball, but that should have been caught. These are the big leagues, not the GCL.
Tex needs to be dropped in the lineup already! Why not bat Cano at 3?!
Is it time yet to switch Cano and Tex in the line-up yet?
pitch around A-Rod, then deal with Cano
The offense has been bad for awhile despite a few 6/7 run games. I’m trying hard not to think of 2008, but that is what this reminds me of. It’s early, so of course no panicking here (though in 2008 we kept saying that as well……..until it became apparent that it wasn’t early anymore).
Rude question but when is it time to bench Teixeira? Sorry, but it’s gotta happen soon. Let Robbie hit third.
Is this the postseason struggling Teixeira making another appearance, man he looks bad
and is just killing the Yankees right now….1 for his last 22…..
Misspelling killed Tex.

Can no longer play him everyday. He can’t hit LH anymore.
Another horrible AB.
At this point, Juan Miranda is a tougher AB from the left side.
Another dreadful at bat. Tex needs to sit for a couple of days. Chasing way off the plate
How does this season remotely remind you of 2008? Compare the two starting rotations…
tex is clueless right now. un friggin believable. the guy cannot get a productive out…..
Erica, next time don’t mention the Avengers. Teix might think that you don’t care about him, just his stats.
What is Mark Teixeira doing up at the plate?
How can he be this bad for this long?
He literally can’t hit any off speed pitches or anything on the outside half, especially from the left side.
The only thing he hits are mistake pitches that wind up out over the plate.

Tex needed to at least hit a sac fly, that strikeout was pitiful
Patrick, perhaps “awful” was an overreaction (awful would have been his start in Baltimore last year), but he wasn’t good. I really don’t blame the whole thing on Winn because Phil got the two outs and couldn’t put a bad hitter away. I’m not quite sure what your point is about Phil not going up to Eiland and saying “I refuse to throw breaking pitches”. Obviously he’s not done that, but when he goes to the mound, he’s NOT doing that. I don’t think either of us want to get into an argument, so lets agree to disagree and move on to another topic that we both can agree on…………like the frustrations of Tex.

I didn’t watch A-Rod’s AB, ’cause I knew he wouldn’t do anything, instead I watched Dice-K’s choke job.
Of course Wright the worse 3rd baseman in the majors makes that play. Unreal…
“This dude Mejia has sick stuff. I heard about him a lot from Mets fans (mostly because they are mad he’s even in the big leagues).”
He’s got a very good fastball. They really should not have brought him up to the majors.
If they’d just leave him alone and let him develop he could be a front line starter.
His secondary stuff really is very raw.
Though he can throw a change up that Mark Teixeira can’t hit. It’s probably the 10th change up he’s thrown in his entire career.
They haven’t hit all year. They was bailed out by Cano’s hot April and the pitchers being great. It’s almost June and they’re still doing absolutely nothing.
And Teixeira is probably on his way to having a bad year.

Jeezus Krist that was pathetic. Tex just giving outs away. Next time bunt – anything except whiff – again.

Believe me, Im not excusing Winn. He’s terrible.
However, if you have Alex Cora 0-2, he can’t beat you in that AB. That AB is on Hughes.
Doesn’t matter anyway since the offense has completely dried up.
Girardi has a big challenge ahead of him.
Can’t play Tex much longer against righties.
He’s killing the team worse than Randy Winn and that’s saying something.
We are looking at a 3rd place team by July 1st. To think otherwise I’d delusional.
Those guys in the 7th need to get it down. No reason for that crap. Nobody has to be pointing fingers at anybody on this club. The whole offense stinks. From Winn all the way through Tex
What the hell happened to Tex?
This is no longer a slow start. We’re a week away from June. This time last year he was raking.
Have to send him to Tampa and have Nardi start from scratch with him. He simply is not a big league hitter anymore.
14 left on base so far, Yankees aren’t a threat on base or at the plate., that’s a bad combo.
3-4 n jeter have been terible all yr
Mirror image of the 2008 Yankees.
Today 1 year ago… Melky hit the walkoff off Brad Lidge. We were cruising at this time, offense was hot, just coming off a 9 game win streak.
These are not the 2009 Yanks, not even close.
The one pitch you couldn’t get beaten on in that spot was a fastball, and what did Teixeira consistently let himself get beaten on? Fastballs.
You have to drop him in the order, enough is enough. If he isn’t hitting, you can’t allow him to bat in the 3 hole where he comes up in crucial spots night after night. If Jeter isn’t patient, you need to drop him out of the leadoff spot so you have guys getting on base in front of A-Rod and Cano.
And look at that. The first base umpire is NOT EVEN LOOKING AT THE BAG. How can he say that Teixeira was off the bag when he is not even looking at the play?
Teixera totally looks like a guess hitter right now…one that isn’t guessing right very often. He has so little margin for error in his swing that it requires excellent timing and he just doesn’t have it right now.

GB7 -
Who were you referring to?
———————————————————————————————————————-
Winn is hitting .250 with 8 RBi in 48 at bats. Jeter is at .207 with 7 RBI in 92 at bats.
Make no mistake, though. these losses are team efforts. Even the run totals over the last week was based on 9th inning rallies that mostly fell short. Winn has had issues, but, this isn’t even remotely his faults the majority of the time. This last inning was a prime example.
Erica
He cant possibly be helping your team anyways.
I’d rather have big pap than Tex
Will McCarver just quit go to the nursing home and get ready for death. God he is so stupid.
Dfa winn. He sucks
Come on Erica the Avengers suck anyway, drop him off the team.
Mets have a nice core of young talent – Pelfrey, Meijia, Ike Davis.
They sign a guy like Lee this winter and get a real manager, they can definitely make some noise. Not as bad as people are making them out to be.
Of course, everything hinges on Wright and Reyes.
Dice-K sucks.
Someone needs to say it Mark Teixeira has been an absolute disgrace when the Yankees have needed him to step it up.
Do you notice how we are no longer saying its only April. That is the difference folks. The time when he should have heated up and be helping this team has come and he is still not doing anything on offense to help as the #3 hitter.
I was expecting this guy to start hitting but what I’m watching from him so far is mind boggling.
This reminds me of when the Yanks looked dreadful against the Nationals last season. Facing garbage and the Yanks look dead. Yanks need to face a good team to look alive otherwise the bad teams put them to sleep.
“Very Pro-Mets, although they have said that Hughes pitched into bad luck, not many hard hit balls ……..”
Pat M.-
It was really just an ok start. It’s true – they didn’t square him up too much. But he wasn’t crisp. Wasn’t working all four quadrants. He got beat with his cutter to hitters he shouldn’t have been throwing the pitch too.
And most of all he really could not effectively finish off hitters with 2 strikes. It was very pronounced today.
He’s not using his curveball to any kind of productive effect.

************
I’ll put it this way-
For all of the Lohud complaining and whining about him, this week as of this second, he has earned me more points than either David Wright or Pedroia
It’s funny that everyone kills Winn but captain intangibles is just as bad defensively and actually worse offensively
Tampa won, Boston is winning, so all is back to as it was before yesterday.
Big Papi had better numbers than Tex after June last year
This year, he is hitting .350 with 8 HRs this month.
He is not done. Tex is the one who looks done. He’s not done though, he’s just utterly lost.
Routine fly ball that Winn drops to cost them a run, then they can’t even get a single run home with 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.
A 2 run swing in a game they are trailing by 3. When you don’t score, every mistake play or pitch is costly. That’s why you can’t fault the starting pitching for struggling a bit recently, because they are under a lot more pressure given the state of the offense.
Hughes in that inning had to throw at least an extra 10 or 15 pitches because of the dropped fly ball, and all of them under intense pressure because of the lack of offense. Pitchers get a lot more tired when they are making so many high intensity pitches, which is why you occasionally need to bail out your pitchers once in a while as well.

Good teams like the Rays?
Danger Zone
If I recall the Yankees were not playing good during that time. We loss the series to the Phillies and we almost got swept if not for Brad Lidge and we were bad against the Sox and weak NL teams. The Yankee offense was also bad. Stop trying to change history to fit your narrative.
i can foresee a k-rod blown save tonight
I stop by to see the blog mood during a very tough night and lo’ and behold I find Betsy saying
“Patrick, I’m going to be civil even if you can’t”
Get off your high horse; telling others to be civil after your over the top profanity rant last night. Don’t even try rationalizing your behavior by saying others were attacking you.
You can call this a lecture, opinion, rant, venting or whatever . . . Some posters walk on egg shells around you and don’t say what they feel, but believe me some are a bit tired of your ‘holier than thou’ attitude.
Get over yourself
Don’t want to hear it CR9 – outa here!!
And losing 2 of 3 (inevitable) to the mets is beyond pathetic. If not for alex Cora, they get swept.

Finally! Some optimistic thought!
Teixeira has been cut a lot of slack by everyone so far, but he is not stepping his game up at all to help the ballclub,
We expected that when other guys cooled down Tex and Arod would step their game up so far I can’t believe what I’ve been watching.
Macfan,
Yep. Just going in circles. And the offense is going backwards, so is the starting pitching.
I am writing off this team for now.
Betsy had an over-the-top profanity filled rant?
Now that I find hard to believe!
Erica should drop Teixeira from the Avengers
Jeremy
McCarver will be here until his death. Why? Because he loves to mock the Yankees every chance he gets.
He is a pathetic excuse for a being. Another sleazy Bostonians out of the

CITY OF SLEAZE
Wow that was just a little bit of a jump. Holy cow
We couldn’t even hit Mike Pelfrey… we have no shot against K-Rod.
With the way we are hacking, he will just throw us off-speed junk.
Book is out on us… especially Teixeria. Off-speed junk out of the zone will get us out easily.
I don’t think you can consider platooning Teixera. As bad as he looks right now we all know what he can do and what kind of defender he is. To me he’s one of those players you just have to go with and hope he comes out of this. They need him to figure this out for them to be the best they can be.
thats it. thats all.
whoever
You can dish it. But you cant take it.
Why dont you use your real handle????????????????
You feel good about yourself insulting someone for no reason??????????
Everything is coming up mets.
TB won Yankees back to 5 behind again!
Another 2 out rbi
Send park back to north Korea and take jeter with him
Never fails. Blown call on the strike, next pitch he singles. Really wish A-Rod would guard the line.
Good job batting practice Park. Does he ever get people out?? I don’t know who is more of a waste of a roster spot him or Winn.
Tex could probably use a day off just to clear his head.
He’s got to make his approach simpler right now and just try to square the ball up. His swing is designed to do too much at baseline but right now he’s really pressing on top of that.
I know he has a certain approach but that is a very complicated approach and he would benefit from simplifying that approach for a bit while he’s struggling.
Uncle Ellsworth (ESDTFTA) May 22nd, 2010 at 9:58 pm
Erica should drop Teixeira from the Avengers
***********
I do not appreciate this peer pressure
And now another dumb defensive play lets the Mets tack on another run.
Jason Bay was halfway to 2nd before Chan Ho Park even delivered the ball. Someone has to yell at him to step off and catch him between the bases there. The extra base they just gave up cost them that run.
The Yankees look terrible right now. Anyone who says otherwise is just delusional. No more of the injury excuse or the “it’s just one game” nonsense, the team has looked bad for the last 2 weeks now night after night, it’s not just a few bad games.
Web gem
Santana is going to have such an easy time with us tomorrow. He’ll throw nothing but changeups.
Chan Ho Park is ridiculous
I’m confused- is cr9 Betsy?
Can we cut park already?
They could easily go with a Lefty-Righty platoon with Tex. He has hit lefties fine. Put Miranda in vs Righties for a bit, work with him with K Long.
“I don’t suck!!!!!!!!!”
Of course you don’t, you are a Princess.
The Avengers however do suck and you need to drop Tex off the team.
That run was the end of the game for the Yanks. K-rod is not going to blow a lead like that. Maybe !
get them tomorrow. halliday is pitching for the phillies.
Mark Teixeira has to wake up. He is so lost up there its pathetic. He has not done anything at the plate since last September. When you combine his Postseason ABs with this season’s, he is 45 for 227. That is a .199 batting average. Its really becoming a problem.
Also, can we get more unlucky? Every hit seems to find a space where no one is. How many bloops, bleeders and soft ground balls have they gotten… Its pretty frustrating.
All their runs tonight with 2 outs. Sickening joke!
“Good teams like the Rays?”
——————————-
The starting pitching was dreadful in that series it didn’t even give the offense a chance to win. Hughes pitched an ok game today definitely gave the team a chance, this game is on the offense.
That’s the ball game.

Drop Teix Erica – it’s all your fault!
I say Winn is the biggest waste of a roster spot for a 200 mill team.
He cannot play anymore…why cant CASHman see that?
Lose 2 of to the METS is an embarrassment and should get the attention of Hal S.
Jerkface, seriously – are you kidding? Give me a break. You obviously didn’t read the stuff that was written about me; if you had, you wouldn’t be getting on my case because I blew up once. Holy…………..
The LoHud Buzzers are circling Chan Ho , must still be hungry after picking the carcass of Winn , Texeria & Hughes
They aren’t platooning Tex. That’s just silly. If he doesn’t get at bats he’s never going to break out of this.
He could use a day to clear his head but the notion that he’s not going to play everday is something out of video game management.
It’s not going to happen. He could use a day off and some time with Kevin Long.
yea jerkface, they are going to platoon texiera…
seriously do you stay up all night thinking these things up????????????????
We’re going to help save Manual’s job when he beats us 2\3
A very charitable team we are… we turned Boston’s season around and now we’re helping the Mets turn theirs around too.
Park is NL garbage. The Yanks can really use another arm in the bullpen. Robertson, Joba and Mo all season isn’t going to get it done. They have 3 totally useless people on the roster Winn, Logan and Park.
Tex is awful – Jeter Is awful – ARod gets a pass – Phil gets a pass – Winn should be DFA. This team has ruined my Sat night and should get their acts together
Guys and gals
You will never find another fan as true to the Yankees or any teams as me. Dont expect Erica to drop Tex. I certainly didnt. No need to pressure her.
I bet 5 grand against the Giants in each playoff game of 2008, for good luck. So I lost 20 grand in all, and ya know what,
It didnt matter one bit!!!!! I got the Giants championship I so desired. Heck, I would have given my life for that Giants Super Bowl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
night all.
I refuse to let Yankees ruin my weekend anymore.
Hey, all, just want to apologize … my first night subbing for Chad and Sam and I’m having nightmarish internet connection issues. thus no updates … and maybe nothing postgame.

swisher needs to hit 2nd more to utilize gardner at the bottom of the lineup since joe won’t let him steal batting 2nd

++++++++++++++++++++++++
LOL, no one wants the carcass of Winn, its mangy and full of disease not even the vultures would touch it.
We just want it purged from the Yankees roster.
Since the series against tampa the yanks have really been struggling with RISP. They have been plenty of times that they have a runner on third with less than two outs and it seems like the hitter always strikes out.
Can we finally move Tex down the lineup. It’s a joke that A-rod and the botton of the lineup are the only ones who can hit a ball right now.
YES!!!! 2 men on!! BIG!!!
“Am I missing something? Are you in the league and I don’t realize it???”
Just drop Tex and nobody will get hurt.
Tex needs to sit tomorrow. With the off day Monday he would get 2 full days. He is 100% lost.
go back to Kearney!
Cashman needs to chew them out like he did in Atlanta.
Going back to that Sunday Boston game 2 weeks ago, the offense has been dreadful. Shut down that night, shut down in Detroit, shut down last game in Minny, now shut down 4 straight games.
We’ve hit well in 4 of our last 14 games.
Second time Swish was hit in the uni. This time he gets his base
Bottom of the order > Top of the order.
Tex will get one more shot in this game.
Geez…Manuel makes alot of pitching changes and why did the Mets build such a big park when David Wright is their best player and hits HR to left-center….Mets jsut seem clueless in a town where so many people/writers/talk radio hosts make you realize it and yet they still make stupid decisions….
How does this team lead the league in runs scored? Certainly doesn’t feel that way.
Maybe Tex should drop Erica?
(don’t ask what that means)
Cervelli, TAKE A WALK!
Chan Ho Park sucks !
Stop using him ! He is the left handed Logan !
I agree Matt.
This team is playing poorly in all facets. It is not on the injuries b/c the big guys are not carrying their weight.
Who was surprised by what AJ and Andy did in their last starts? I was not.
How about Jeter doing something? What do they do w/ his contract? Cant go 5 for 100 can they?
Arod/Tex hurting the O.
Winn is a waste. The more we Winn the more they lose.
Welcome to the wild card chase which we should still be the favorites.
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bases loaded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thames, TAKE A WALK!
This game isn’t over.
This game isn’t over.
Trevor
Because most of those runs were scored when the Yankees were healthy and hitting well. They have been really bad this week.
Those two tack on runs the mets got really hurt now.
If those 2 extra runs weren’t given up this would be nice. At 5-1 it’s probably alittle too late.
A Jax was hit in the head in the Tiger game. No word on his status. This from Hoch’s twitter
There’s Cervelli with more of that false hustle.
I said it was POSSIBLE to platoon Tex, because we happen to have a good lefty slugger who can play 1b on our bench.
And the context of my post is that they would take some time to work with K-Long and Tex’s lefty swing.
And no I did not need all night to come up with that???
Betsy, so you DID have a profanity laced rant? Where is it? I wanna read it!

We score in bunches
In our last 5 games against Boston, we have scored 43 runs.
We scored 17 runs in 3 games vs. the Twins
23 in 3 games vs. Chicago
And garbage time runs like we did against Tampa that one night. We’ve been very erratic in that department. We were much better earlier in the season. This month we have been dreadful/
The only other useless person on the roster who hasn’t had a chance to hurt the Yanks yet…Logan. Maybe that is next inning.
You have got to be kidding me with that stirke

Russo hasn’t been up here long enough to be infected with the RISP-itis. Let’s here it for the kid from LI!
Russo > Winn , Pena
Professional AB….. SEE YA WINN….. DFA when Granderson comes back
Wow. 5 outs from K-rod? Yankees will do some damage, the question is how much….
Russo has very good patient at bats. Miranda could of walked also if he was patient.
Are they really going to bring in k-rod to get 5 outs ?
great at bat. Hopefully Jeter will own K-Rod like he has in the past.
You know the Yanks are struggling when both Stuart & Matt arrive on the scene……Jeter can right the ship right here, and give the club a big lift……

Don’t piss on the Captain
Russo continues to impress.
Randy Winn is feeling the pressure tonight.
Wow is Charlie Manual desperate or what
What a remarkably impressive at bat from Russo. Just fantastic. For a kid with a handful of major league games to fall behind 0-2 on terrible umpiring and then work a walk with the bases loaded to get a run home is just a great at bat.
Very impressive strike zone command. Russo has a plan up there when he does to the plate. Very good pitch recognition as well.
Russo makes contact and takes pitches. The at bat started 0-2. Winn would of been struck out and finished in 3 pitches.
jeter needs to be patient k-rod is usually wild his first batter or two
Jeter, TAKE A WALK!
I’d like to see K-Rod blow this opportunity. Anything to see him put his hands on his head again in disbelief.
Time for Jeter to clam some folks up on this board.
I hope this isn’t a usual Jeter DP. He needs to be patient with Krod. He has been wild this season.
Rodriguez for 5 outs is no sure bet.
pat m. touche.
i can’t even watch the game since i am in calif. so i have to whine based on gamecast.
Jeter shouldn’t need to be motivated to hit a bases clearing double
k-rod is fat. Look at that face !
Huge room in the gap
I am watching the game and I am in California.
Maybe the north really is better.
It’s time for the top of the lineup to really shine. They’ve been conspicuous by their absence, especially in the clutch!
This is desparation for the Mets. Yankees should smell blood in the water.
dodger game in so cal.

He is scared to throw a fastball
Why is Gardner late on all of those pitches ?
I quit
Slap it somewhere Brett
Of course Wright decides to not throw any balls away tonight
Right to him. Every single god damn ground ball. Right to them.
No seeing eye singles like Cora. ********* ******* ***** **** ***** JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MOTHER ******* ******* JOKE!
Another rally that wasn’t.
I am already excited for Cano v. K-Rod with a runner on during the top of 9th….
Atleast Gardner had the right approach. Can’t fault him for that.
more clutch hitting. wow. this haqs gone on for a week or so. across the board except Russo and Cervelli.. WOW
Bases loaded no outs we get 2 runs
And then when he hits it hard it’s always at Wright.
Time to move Swisher into the 2 hole…… Gardner it coming up too many times in RBI situations and cant get the ball out the infield
I am now even more speechless, and a little hungry.
I guess K-Rod is more of a finesse junkball pitcher nowadays ???? Saw that happening during his last season in Anaheim, especially in the Postseason vs. Boston when he just threw curve after curve…….He’s toast
When will the carl crawford talk start up again?
A guy who was just called up had the best AB in the inning. Pretty damn sad.

Important we keep it to two down.
We can get two off K-Rod.

When will the carl crawford talk start up again?
********
He is an Avenger too!
No one is telling me to drop him
The Yankees need to win this series. I really can’t stand some of these arrogant Met fans.
If they can hold them right here them I still think they will have a chance in the 9th.
I know that I’m observing radio silence on the Matsui/Damon thing, but I’m 100% convinced that we’d be scoring more runs and have more late inning heroics if those guys were in the lineup.
dylan check out matsui’s stats, you will not miss him for long.
then again matsui is a huge asset when they are playing in NL ballparks because he is such a good fielder….
Damon batting second in the line up would be nice right about now.
Cashman signed the playoff 94-96 mph Park….. now he’s getting 90-92 batting practice park
If they do not come back to win this in the 9th, the team will have no excuses left. Pelfrey pitched well, but once again the difference in the game is 2 sloppy runs they allowed late, as well as the runs they did not get home earlier in the game, such as the Teixeira at bat with 2nd and 3rd, 1 out.
Can’t even say they had bad at bats there against Rodriguez, but they dug themselves too deep a hole by playing terrible ball early on that it was too late to muster the comeback.
Games are 9 innings long, and you have to do something in innings 1-6 if you want to win ballgames. This team has been using these late inning comebacks as a crutch and an excuse for early game struggles over the last few years, but you only have to make a comeback if you are losing because of poor play earlier on.
and the mets closer actually does what he is supposed to do -
Keep Crawford, drop Tex before it’s too late.
With no outs and the bases load, that rally just wasn’t satisfying enough. They got their runs the cheap way that didn’t require much offense, a very big problem as of late.
Laura
Nothing we can do about that now. All we can do is continue cheering our team on, and continue to believe in them.
Of course the game would be tied if Winn and Park weren’t allowed to wear pinstripes.
stuart,
Say what you want about Matsui but he always came through in the clutch.
park just came off the dl he will pitch better

I am NOT giving him up for nothing
However, I am a rational girl and would me willing to consider trade offers
Pizza…hmmm….someone needs to order it for me though because I am too speechless. Why is this team so frustrating lately?
Wow, Carl…….
Jeremy, I would think CC would pitch well, but who knows where that will get us? This subway series just had no appeal coming in (not for me, anyway – I hate it under normal conditions, but with the Yanks playing badly coming in………..) and it doesn’t have any now. Normally the idea of losing to the Mets is just unacceptable, but now? I can’t get worked up about it because the Yankees would be losing to most teams the way they are playing.

Do you know that Matsui would have those same stats if he was in our lineup? Did he have those stats last year?

The Yankees need to win this series. I really can’t stand some of these arrogant Met fans.
arrogant and Mets don’t go together.
The top of the lineup needs to get their head into the game. Tex, Jeter, and now Gardner are killing this team right now.
And by the way, Gardner should not be batting 2nd when Curtis Granderson comes back. A #2 hitter should not be a little slap hitter who hits dinky ground balls with runners on base. Ground balls are outs when you have forces on at bases other than first, and we need someone up there who can drive the ball in crucial spots and be at least somewhat dangerous.
Atleast we got 2 and cut down the lead. Middle of the order against K-Rod in the 9th.
That’s another reason you keep tex in there everyday.
He is an Avenger too!
No one is telling me to drop him
because he also plays for the Rays – we want them to be jinxed
I guess the Magic must have felt terrible for beating the Celts last year.
So they did their darndest to get knocked out this year.
Celtics are 4 games from an NBA championship.
“Cashman signed the playoff 94-96 mph Park….. now he’s getting 90-92 batting practice park”
Cashman is the gift that keeps on giving. Ruined our 2009 championship team with washed up garbage like NJ, Winn, and Park.
“Nothing we can do about that now. All we can do is continue cheering our team on, and continue to believe in them.”
True, CR9. I’m just having a hard time believing in Thames and Winn, who is clearly wasting a roster spot.
We loss this game on two situations
Winn in the lineup as the starting LF after the night Russo had
And GI Joe overmanaging w/ the basesloaded, I know Miranda is a big lefty stick but he’s so not ready for these situations and Thames eats pitchers like him for breakfast/lunch/dinner
Erica
I wish I was in your league. I’d trade you Albert Pujols for Teixeira, just to get him off your team, and I wouldnt think twice about making that trade either.
lol Reyes!
At this point, the wheels have come off this team.
Injuries, Jeter and Tex can’t hit anymore, nobody hits with RISP, the OF defense kills them every night, the bullpen allows late inning tack on runs every night and the starters have come down to earth.
There is one part of this team that’s working right now.
When Kevin Russo is the best player on your team the last two nights, it’s a BIG problem.
This is a real test for this team to dig out if this week.
It’s floundering in a big way right now.
Well they are not arrogant but annoying. And Reyes is a moron !
Speechless May 22nd, 2010 at 10:31 pm
Pizza…hmmm….someone needs to order it for me though because I am too speechless. Why is this team so frustrating lately?
***********
Dominos and Papa Johns have online ordering. You wouldn’t have to say a word!
Just trying to help
That is Reyes for you. You know the one that is as good as Jeter. What a fool lol
Thanks Reyes…have no idea what yiure doing..but thanks.
CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 10:33 pm
Erica
I wish I was in your league. I’d trade you Albert Pujols for Teixeira, just to get him off your team, and I wouldnt think twice about making that trade either.
*******
I would totally accept that.
See
Erica = Rational!
Reyes has a lot of talent but he has to be one of the dumbest baseball players I have ever seen.
Srsly Thames vs Nieves baseloaded, he waxed Jonathon Papelbon, you telling me Fernando Nieves deserves that type of respect?
Fernando FREAKING Nieves
What is Reyes doing?
This mets team is just so strange. They do the oddest things and just bizarre things transpire throughout the organization both on the field and off.
over/under on how many pitches tex sees before he whiffs is 4.5. I say under
“However, I am a rational girl and would me willing to consider trade offers”
LOL. Now we are getting somewhere. Uncle you have anything Princess might want?
Yankeeeeeeeees!
Uncle Ellsworth (ESDTFTA) May 22nd, 2010 at 10:31 pm
He is an Avenger too!
No one is telling me to drop him
because he also plays for the Rays – we want them to be jinxed
*************
He is #2 in my offense this week
(#1 is Vlad Guerrerro)
Reyes has the I.Q. of a stop sign.
Too bad the real Tex wasn’t leading off the 9th inning
CR9,
Just accept it dude, it is much easier that way.
I have already accepted everything will be gifted to Boston. Kobe will pull a LeBron like he did in 2008 and the Celtics will win #17. Tommy Heinson, the murder, will stand on stage with his fellow murders Garnett, Pierce, Scalabrini, and Rasheed Wallace to accept a ring that Kevin McHale is responsible for. Cheating the poor Timberwolves by gifting his former team 2 championships and has no shame in doing so. It cost him his job, but what does he care?
And the umps have cost us several runs these last few games while they gift Boston calls. Rob Morneau of strikes, but give them to the Mets hitters against us.
The fix is in. The Sports gods want Boston to be on top and there is nothing we can do about it. The buzz from he 3-0 Bruins choke is still there, but it too will diminish with the scumbag Celtics win.
Well at least the Yankees are the defending World Champions…makes me feel better…except Matsui and Damon were on that team…and Matsui would have been a good pinch hitter in a spot tonight as he was last year in inter-league and the World Series…..
Tex just tried to pull a pitch that he could never pull
And this is literally bullsh… how Winn and Park are still on this team, this is a 1-2-3 inning w/o a doubt, K-Rod doesn’t suck.
“If they do not come back to win this in the 9th, the team will have no excuses left.”
http://www.businessweek.com/au.....xcuses.jpg
89 mph fastball, and he is so late on it that it’s almost in the catcher’s glove. Teixeira is terrible right now, it’s time to drop him in the lineup, but Girardi won’t because he always continues to do the same things that don’t work thinking they will eventually fix themselves.
Tex when are you going to be embarassed enough with this shift that you do something about it.
and tex proves me right!!
Randy winn needs to go and russo needs to get a look he may be Ricky ledee incarnate but I have seen more grit from him in the past two games than winn or Thames combined. Also whether it’s nova or sanchez I’d rather see them get a chance instead of batting practice park who is horrible.
Unreal…
Thames with 1 foot vs a righty??? Nah you go to Miranda. He is a pro-hitter.
Tex has been horrible. His glove is the only reason he’s in the lineup
Really looking forward to this Cano/K-Rod match up
From the manager to the general manager, to the players, this team sucks right now. Plain and simple, they suck.
Tex is making $20 million to bat .210 and go 0/8 for his last eight chances with a man on third and less than 2 outs.
Randy Winn, who cannot hit a major league fastball at this point in his career, and apparently is having trouble fielding his position as well, is the starting LF.
Chan Ho Park, a flyball pitcher, has allowed a HR to 20% of men faced.
Yankee fans are pinning their hopes of winning on a 2nd year backup catcher and a rookie with 5 ML at bats. Pathetic for a team with a $200 million payroll. Ask our GM how this can happen, and while you’re at it, ask our GM and manager how the Yankees ended up playing shorthanded for most of the past week. Sure their are injuries, but this is what these guys are payed for.
Reading all the negatives about the Yanks, you’d not think they have the 3rd best record in baseball especially when you factor in all the adversities and the early schedule …. I guess .600 ball just doesn’t cut it anymore
Sit Tex down Now !!! Sit him Down Joe !
Tex is an automatic out at this point. Just throw him off-speed pitches and he is toast.
He is a detriment now. People kill Randy Winn, but Winn has contributed considerably more to this team than Tex as.
Yah, he can hit a moon shot of the position player in Boston, but when we need him? Nowhere to be found. He is a detriment and has been for weeks.
This is what i feared…
The playoff scouting report on Teix has gotten around the league. He cant lay off breaking stuff in the dirt down the middle of the plate.
Pathetic at bat. Pathetic. There is no excuse for that, Rodriguez did not even make good pitches, Teixeira just completely missed everything.
This isn’t just April anymore, he is killing the team batting 3rd and with these injuries, they cannot afford to keep letting him struggle in crucial spots at the top of the lineup.
WOW that was dreadful. Tried to pull an outside and then swung at an off speed garbage in the dirt. There is no way he should be in the lineup tomorrow. He needs to clear his head.
Just to get out of this slump Tex just needs to take one of those outside pitches the opposite way.
They keep pitching away and that pitch can’t be consistently pulled the way he tries to.
He is way too complicated up there right now.
He’s got to make things simple right now.
When did Reuben Sierra start wearing no. 25 again?
Mouth agape. Speechless.
Fernando Nieves vs Marcus Thames…he puts Miranda to bat.
In his last 250 AB’s, Tex is hitting .195.
That’s not a slump. That’s a part time player.
He can’t hit any LH anymore and they have to stop playing him against righties. He has no chance against them anymore b
Joe needs to sit Tex tomorrow.
He needs a day to clear his head and try to get it together.
He is absolutely killing this team right now.
Tex HAS to be benched. Has to be.
This is where Torre shined— he disciplined under performing hitters – a la batting A-Rod 8th ion the playoffs
Girardi has to do something similar or he will lose the respect of his team.
Obviously that’s not SJ………..
Blew A-Rod away with that pitch!
That fastball was right over the plate to hit
tex is late on fastballs ad early on offspeed stuff right now. His timing is all screwed up and I think he’s also just plain ole pulling his head out on pitches…I know that’s simplistic but that’s what it looks like.
It’s time to sit him down.
wait don’t tell me the yankees will now get a few guys on base score 2 runs and all the fans on here will take it as a sign that they are getting back on track. Note to you all – Cashman eff’d this team up this offseason by bringing losers to the team
Yeah, batting Alex 8th was a great move; that definitely inspired the Yankees to win that series. If anything, that move lost Torre respect……….
Disgraceful performance by Tex.
People killed Javy early, Javy performed MUCH better than tex has
Tex isin’t even trying anymore. He is just flailing away at offspeed junk and getting himself out
Arod is the only person who can hit. Also Cano with no one on base. The top of the order never gets on base for Arod to drive them in.
Our “big two” is not A-Rod and Cano, not A-Rod and Teixeira.
If Cano is batting 3rd in these games, they probably score a few extra runs because he drives home some of those guys when Teixeira has no chance of even putting the ball in play.
Yes, Teixeira should be batting 3rd when all things are going right, but they aren’t now and it’s time to put your hottest hitters in spots where they get the most at bats.
Sucks we’re going to fall short.
I feel a comeback
Man, Tex has been horrible.
I don’t under stand why he can’t slap the ball to the left side…they are giving him that whole side of the field.
haha NOT the outcome I expected!
It all comes down to Swishalish…
K-Rod gets his 1-2-3 inning
Throwing garbage slop right by our $200 million dollar hitters after a laborious 8th inning
Disgraceful
Swisher with the sore biceps is gonna go deep
Well Nick can try but I think this game is over.
I blame this performance on Fox, especially Buck and that other guy, I will call him “Not Buck.”
It’s amazing how Krod pitches now. He is so scared to throw his fastball. He has to live off of his off speed crap. He is lucky he is in the NL now with what he is throwing out there.
“His timing is all screwed up and I think he’s also just plain ole pulling his head out on pitches…”
That’s why he needs to simplify things, track the ball and hit the pitch where it is.
What concerns me some is that pitchers are exploiting a legitimate weakness in his hitting approach.
And rather than make any adjustments he’s making life difficult for himself.
K Rod will make Valverde look calm if he gets Swish here
Cervelli vs. K-Rod
It’s just a tease, we fall short tonight setting up Sunday.
He’s never going to break out because he won’t adjust from the left side of the plate.
He’s still trying to pull soft stuff away and just strikes out in almost every AB.
If you insist on playing him everyday, he can’t bat third any longer.
Keep him batting third, you can’t get upset any longer when you see he can’t help you from the left side of the plate.
He is what he is at this point. One of the worst hitters in MLB from the left side of the plate.
Too bad Tex wasted an out with that pathetic at bat. Cervelli can’t come threw every time.
The bottom of the order should not have to carry you night after night like has been the case tonight.
Jeter and Teixeira were up tonight in many crucial at bats and did not get anything done. Randy Winn is the least of our concerns.
Here we go ‘Cisco!
Just a triple would be ok here.
At least we are making him work. K-Rod might not be available tomorrow, and if he is, he will be diminished.
I wish posada were batting
Shouldnt they pinch run?
Anyone who says winn has done more than Tex must be watching a different team just watch the past two games where he botched plays in left field and choked when at bat. He is horrible. I would rather see Jon weber, Chad Hoffman , Kevin russo etc. Injuries hurt everyteam but old ineffective veterans are easily removed for youth
Brandon, killjoy negativity is not awesome.
Cervelli has the right kind of swing to hit krod.
Jerkface May 22nd, 2010 at 10:44 pm

Me too!!!!
Posada is also an Avenger!
Good thing is K-rod might not be available on Sunday.

Brandon employs a reverse psychology mojo technique
They try to tease us in the 9th inning of all of these games recently.
We have to PH Moeller or Pena if Cervelli extends it. Ouch
and ramiro pena on deck in to pinch hit…RAMIRO PENA..you can’t make this s**t up…
LOL @ Teix vs Santana Changeup on Sunday….. 0-4 with 4 strikeouts…… he better be on the bench
Damn that was ball 3. Krod go kiss yourself on the mound like a fool
CB,
Totally agree, especially from the left side he has so many moving parts in that swing.
13 runners stranded. WHAT A JOKE.
mets won their world series
oy
THEY STRANDED 13 RUNNERS!!!!??????
I’m sorry but that was a pathetic effort.
I hate K-rod ! I wish Bruney punched him in the face last year.
Also I think it’s time for Cashman to talk to the team. Something needs to be done to get this team back on track.
Well, just a well played game overall by the Yankees, lol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
I am so glad that the difference in the game is Winn who can’t catch a fly ball and Park who never gets anyone out. 2 people who shouldn’t be playing or pitching for this team. Cashman should be proud of himself for wasting 2 roster spots with those washed up players.
say something funny Nick
Cervelli needs a break. No energy now.
We get granderson back soon
Damn Phil’s 1st loss. But only loss of the season.
Again GI JOE… Thames pulled w/ basesloaded vs Fernando FREAKING Nieves… WHO IS THAT?
You took an experienced clutch batter out of that spot to put a kid who has yet to show he can handle that situation.
AND IT’S FERNANDO NIEVES MAN!!!! FERNANDO NIEVES!!!!
3 for 14 with RISP
That is pathetic.
This game was entirely winnable and they let another slip away, and it had nothing to do with the injuries considering the bottom of the order actually carried the team once again tonight.
You cannot dig yourself the kind of hole they are starting to dig themselves, even with the injuries. In the last 2 weeks they are 5-9, which is barely .350 ball, and have let all of the other teams in the East gain significant ground on them. Who knows if Curtis Granderson can even make a difference in this lineup if Teixeira and Jeter continue to slide.
Not surprising. This team can’t hit with RISP anymore.
It’s 2008 all over again with the lack of clutch hitting.
Only chance they have tomorrow is CC pitching a complete game shut out and has to hit a HR to win 1-0.
Nobody else can hit, might as well see if CC can.
Josh
You cant think that way. You have to continue believing. This has nothing to do with sports gods. It has to do with referees. The refs screwed the Lakers in 2008. Simple as that.
And if the Celtics were to win, which I pray to GOD they dont, it would be 18, not 17.
Granderson was hitting .230 when he left and is an easy out against lefties.
If he is the answer, then god help us.
13 LOB.
Pathetic.
CR9, I believed your guarantee!!!
Our lineup sucks, no depth, no clutch hitters, do you really think Gardner and Cervelli can keep up this pace and be counted on for production and in the clutch. We need a bat, now, we can’t wait for Johnson who was Cashman’s worst of many very very poor off season moves. We have too few run producers and with Tex playing like a minor leaguer we won’t be able to score enough runs to compete in the East. We need a bat, NOW
24 Left on base, 11 hits and only 3 runs to show for it. This win was a more decisive win than the 2-1 yesterday. I wish Phil will fall out of love with the cutter, it’s not fooling anyone!!
Uncle Ellsworth (ESDTFTA) May 22nd, 2010 at 10:48 pm

I am not Nick but….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QtfHA26NCE
We litter the bases with runners all night, and fail to get runs in.
No doubles to gaps to clear bases.
And we have no power.
They can pitch around ARod and Cano, and nobody else on the team has any power, at least right now (Tex). Swish has some power also, but he has changed his swing with KLONG to try and put balls in play and hit for average.
# Joba to the minors May 22nd, 2010 at 10:49 pm
Granderson was hitting .230 when he left and is an easy out against lefties.
If he is the answer, then god help us.
Granderson or Winn, you pick.
I’d like to think the Yanks were done in by Pelfrey, who’s a very good pitcher. Maybe it was just that…………..right?
just another day at the ballpark
“The refs screwed the Lakers in 2008.”
And they will have the opp. to screw them again, bro! That is what I’m saying!
I want to strangle Tommy Heinson. But then again, if he sees me, he will probably strangle and murder me even if I’m nice to him LOL
For all the people who are constantly knocking Posda – you can see how dramatic the difference is when he’s in the line up.
When he’s in the line up the dynamic is entirely different because their line up is much longer comparatively speaking.
The team started pressing up at the plate after he got injured and went on the DL.
And for the clueless one blaming Chan Ho Park’s pitching, that runner never scores from first unless he is able to take 2nd with the running start he got before he even delivered the pitch. Park escapes that jam if he just steps off the mound and flips the ball to 2nd to retire Jason Bay, who was halfway to second and in no man’s land before he even threw the pitch.
Randy Winn missing the fly ball was the turning point in the game. Pathetic that Girardi keeps starting this guy for his “defense,” he makes Thames look league average out there. We sat the guy in Russo who had 2 key hits last night for a guy who can’t even catch up to a league average fastball night after night.
“Again GI JOE… Thames pulled w/ basesloaded vs Fernando FREAKING Nieves… WHO IS THAT?”
He loves match-ups.
The yanks are struggling right now with RISP. It happens they will come out of it. Teixeira is really hurting the team. Without Granderson, Posada and Johnson they really need Teix to get going. Same with Jeter he needs to step up too.
no one his homers in that asinine park
Garbage effort by the offense.
Now that Gardner and Cervelli have come down to earth, we are really screwed.
I’M SO SERIOUS THEY BETTER TOUCH ON THAT SUBSTITUTION , YOU SIT THAMES IN THAT SITUATION?
REALLY?
REALLY! FERNANDO NIEVES MO NOW? WHO THE F.. IS FERNANDO NIEVES TO DESERVE THAT RESPECT!
And stop starting Winn, jesus…Nick Johnson/Park/Winn all those 3 are horrible.
Cervelli has been straight up awful lately
Posada truthers, where you at?
No one is helping Arod out. Jeter and Tex never get on base. You knew Gardner and Cervelli were going to settle down. Cano hits with no one on base. The bottom of the lineup is AAA, and people who shouldn’t be playing on the Yanks. The offense needs a lift and it isn’t coming from anywhere.
Josh
This time the Lakers would have the home court advantage, and they would want to get back at their rivals for embaras-sing them in Game 6 in 2008.
I trust in the Lakers this year. I really do. The referees cant possibly cheat the Lakers in LA, can they? Yeah, I know they can, but i’ll continue to believe that they wont. Anything is possible. Even fairness.
# SJ44 May 22nd, 2010 at 10:49 pm
Not surprising. This team can’t hit with RISP anymore.

==================================
Unless you are being sarcastic, I smell an imposter
The Mets pitching has been absolutely dreadful this season. They shut the Yanks down in 2 games. What does that say??? That is absolutely pathetic, embarrassing whatever you want to call it.
Teix and the lack of extra base hits is killing the Yankees. Even when Jeter, Russo, Gardner, Cervelli & Winn get on base its mostly singles.
i agree with pistol pete
enough is enough
its late may but that doesnt mean u sit down and put forth this lineup, or actually this bench depth.
time for a mini shakeup
what’s up…no inning by inning commentary?
Pelfrey got lit up by the Phillies, walked 5 against the Braves, gave up 4 runs to the Washington Nationals.
He is really not as good as his numbers say, Remember, he had like a .60 ERA through 5 games. He has come down to earth lately.
Disappointing that Hughes couldn’t match him.
Again, for people who keep citing the injuries, the injuries have nothing to do with it when your TOP THREE hitters stranded a combined 10 runners on base in their at bats tonight. Even a single base hit or fly ball in these spots and they probably are on the verge of winning this game.
If Teixeira cannot hit, he needs to be dropped in the lineup. Enough is enough, trying the same things which aren’t working and expecting them to miraculously solve themselves overnight is what a losing team would do.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
airing of grievences
I don’t think that Gardenhoser and Dreamy Eyes are issues at all, although it sucks that Moeller is here and not Romine. That’s a back up that should be here to give Dreamy Eyes a rest.
The Yankees need to sit Tex down and Jeter needs to be talked to. And Winn needs to be DFA.
Mets pitching is garbage, but so is our offense.
Their pitching is less garbage than our garbage offense, which is garbage. Which is why even though their pitching is garbage, it is not as garbage as our offense, which is garbage.
Does that make sense?
Without Posada, they aren’t a playoff team.
They weren’t in 2008 and they aren’t now.
Hopefully they win a game this week. About the most you can hope for from this group at this point.
They are stuck play Tex tomorrow against a lefty. After tomorrow, Girardi has to make changes.
If not, by the time Posada comes back, they will be in too deep a hole to make a difference.
Pelfrey is a good pitcher, Mo …he’s very solid.
Dylan
They stranded 24 runners. Moving Gardner to the top of the order, makes him an automatic out after Jeter and before Mark. Mark should be benched.
This is a disgrace. You simply CANNOT let a weak team like the Mets take a game in this series. Now tomorrow becomes a must win for them. You want a sweep going into this series. I dont know whats wrong with Tex. He looks awful out there. Mets were giving the game away to us with all those runners and no one could get a clutch hit. Im dissapointed in Jeter as well, but he has so much credential built up. right now Im just annoyed with the results of this one.
So Granderson coming back is going to make Tex hit?
So where the hell was he when Granderson was healthy?
And Gardner/Cervelli are being exposed as backup players. Cervelli no longer can call a good game and is now an easy out with RISP, which was to be expected, but its not coming at a good time.
Injured players are not going to help A-Rod, Cano, Jeter, Tex hit.
Ugh, getting texts from a Mets fan!
Tex has definitely gone Hollywood.
Nice new haircut.
GQ Markey.
Pelfrey can pound the strike zone with fastballs when he doesn’t have to worry about most of the lineup being about to take him out the park.
Also Girardi should of let Thames hit. Once again he gets obsessed with matchups. Miranda can obviously hit fastball mistakes but he gets fooled by off speed pitches and strikes out at garbage.
They need granderson and Jorge back. Cervelli has done a nice job filling in but they miss Posadas presence in the lineup when he’s gone…also the yanks may have won 2 or 3 more games simply if Granderson had been in the outfield.
The sun will come up tomorrow. A win tomorrow wins the series…I don’t care what folks say about the Mets, a sweep would have been tough and shouldn’t have been seen as sure thing…especially in their ballpark.
“Cervelli has been straight up awful lately
Posada truthers, where you at?”
Dude STHU, Cisco is not a problem. 7 for 10 w/ RISP is not a problem, having a big hit is not a problem from him. We loss tonight b/c of 3 moves.
Winn was starting
Park was pitching relief
Thames wasn’t trusted w/ NO OUTS, BASESLOADED VS FERNANDO ‘FREAKING’ NIEVES!!!
Go away Fake SJ.
Bring back Fake SJ, at least he/she was honest.
Pelfrey is an average pitcher. Put him in the AL East and he will put up 4.50 ERA numbers.
Stop making excuses for the offense. On a normal night, they crush him. Tex watched 3 meatballs right down the middle. That isin’t good pitching, that is bad hitting.
And no IN-N-Out AGAIN!
Sorry, Uncle Ellsworth, comedy has left the building!
no time for ha-ha’s
this is serious biz-ness
we lost to the mets!
If the top of the order were getting on base, A-Rod and Cano could drive in some runs, but they are up consistently with nobody on base. It’s not the injuries, it’s the top of the order. Unless those guys start hitting, this team will not win many games.
You cannot expect your pitching to be perfect, and perfect is what they have to be to win games with the way they are hitting right now.
As hot a start as they had, they are on the verge of giving it all away by playing .357 ball over the last 2 weeks. By the time the injured players come back, they will have dug themselves quite a hole, and hopefully by that point they haven’t cost themselves a good chance at a playoff berth.
folks there is no damon and matsui to help this pathetic team out this year – in place of those 2 winners you have nick johnson and randy winn (oh sorry granderson and his .189 average against lefthanders)
the hitting hero of the last 2 nights was kevin russo, arod has 6 homeruns (SIX, did i mention he has 6 homeruns, heck even teixeira has more)
oh and they scored more runs tonight than they did last night – if they weren’t playing the triple A mets they’d have lost last night too. How many times have they gotten no runs across with 2nd and 3rd and less than 2 outs – at least 6 times the last week. They scored 2 runs tonight with the bases loaded and no outs – one on a walk and one on a weak grounder that should have been a DP if Wright hadn’t bobbled it
people talk about how bad the mets minor league system is – at least they have some people they called up this year that have been producing – pagan, davis, the mejia kid who made the yankee hitters look like dirt – the yankees have …wait for it…..Mark Melancon
oh but you all rave about their minor league system – good luck with the rest of the year you’ll need it
With all the injuries and all the bad performances, it still seems like the Yankees have had a chance to win every game they have played. No right now they are not getting it done, but they will.
I guess that makes me a POM POMM’er.
ANd the news gets worse, they’re releasing the Alex Cora Interview on Blu-Ray!
Michelle,
That was a move to force Manuel’s hand, Thames cant hit right now.
Chan Ho Park is the main culprit
He can’t give up that insurance run.
But then again, what can we expect from a garbage NL pitcher?
Cashman really has had a dreadful off-season. Who is the last reliever from the NL to come to the AL East and do well?
Cash just couldn’t help himself.
Marcus Thames can WAX Papelbon but his manager doesn’t believe he can touch the incredible, indestructable Fernando Nieves.
Can’t complain about injured players not being here. The bottom of the lineup (except for Winn) is holding it’s own. The guys with the big pay checks aren’t.
Also will Girardi man up and call out his players. Stop acting like Terry Francona and grow a spine ! I can understand some players slumping but Tex and Jeter are killing this team right now.
Sometimes I can’t figure Cashman out. He took away some of the depth of the team and let veterans go for cheaper, sometimes questionable alternatives. I disliked most of his moves post-2001 — part of the reason why it took so long (or so it felt!) for the Yankees to get back to championship form last year. It *almost* feels like he’s doing it again. Of course, I want to be wrong on that. I like to think they’re just in the middle of a funk and will right the ship in the time ahead. Sometimes they show signs of life, and sometimes they put up a fight to the end, even for a losing cause. It’s the latter that’s been so frustrating the last few weeks. What happened to the team that was easily winning most of their series?
The Yankees should’ve PH Mariano with bases loaded vs KRod
I agree that lifting Thames was puzzling.
What was Joe thinking?
I vote for Swisher batting 2nd tomorrow.
Mike Pelfrey is a typical overhyped Mets farm hand.
He is a pretty good pitcher, but we face MUCH better in the AL and beat up much better pitchers than him. He is decent. No excuses for not hitting him tonight.
James Shields is better than him and we performed much better against him.
Blake unfortunately Posada isn’t coming back for a month, so we’re going to have to deal with this. Tex and Jeter are going to have to hit; if they don’t, nothing Joe does is going to matter.
I hope Joe puts Moeller with Phil. I’m not blaming Cervelli at all for Phil’s last 2 performances, but I think having a veteran catcher behind the plate would be a good idea.
Granderson will help, though.
Another big paycheck Boras client, (Mark) that gets paid for doing nothing! Why do they come to the Yankees and go on vacation?
Tarheelyank, you might like this:

Winn butchered that fly. Should have been an error.
Granderson is not the savior but if he was there with russo or gardner in left randy winn wouldn’t sniff a chance to misplay the ball the past two games. Secondly Chan ho park is garbage, last year was a fluke in the NL and it is showing now as he is throwing batting practice. I blame this on cashman, I was in agreement that bringing nick Johnson back with his .OBP to hold down the 2 spot was a great idea but at no time did cashman make sufficient move to have a back up in place because as everyone knows nick Johnson since he has left the Yankees has been on the DL more than on the field. Third I thought the reason we didn’t bring back Matsui and Damon was because we were supposedly using the DH by committee yet I see Tex at first , Arod at third and Jeter at short almost every night ( who has not been the same since he got plunked in the hand and it looks reminiscent of a few years ago when instead of letting it heal he played sub par with it). This is a team whose pitching and cano carried them the begining of the year and now looks old and slow with the exception of cano, swisher, cervelli, russo and gardner on most nights. Things need to change because you can’t sit here in may thinking the wild card is a fall back.
You know what – I’m glad we’re getting amazing production out of our young guys – but it’s really starting to bother me that we have Cervelli acting up after every big strikeout, Joba pumping his fists and Gardner flipping out when he failed. Not exactly…. and I hate to utter this word…. “Jeterian.” But it’s true.
We are as flat as pancakes.
No life.
Thames is a hacker
Much rather have Miranda agaisnt a wild guy like K-Rod.
Thames can only hit lefties. Papelbon was an accception.
Not every player on the Mets is garbage – Pelfrey is a good pitcher.
With Jeter who knows if its a long slump or if he is losing it. I know on this board you can’t say anything bad about Jeter, but you can’t deny it. He looks old and dreadful. He has a Vlad like strike zone, never gets on base and its a big achievement when he doesn”t hit the ball to 3rd, 2nd or SS. The top of the lineup is killing them right now.
Joe needs to call a team meating and chew out his team
This is pathetic. They are showing no life. Bad ABs after bad ABs.
Gardner really struggled tonight. But he has played very well this is really the first series where he is not getting on base. He was going to cool off a little same with Cervelli. They need more from Jeter and Teixeira.
“folks there is no damon and matsui to help this pathetic team out this year – in place of those 2 winners you have nick johnson and randy winn (oh sorry granderson and his .189 average against lefthanders)”
Dude STHU, we’re getting younger and that’s not the problem. BTW Granderson has a GW HR that still hasn’t landed vs BOS. Damon has one big hit this season, Matsui can’t field and takes up the DH spot.
“people talk about how bad the mets minor league system is – at least they have some people they called up this year that have been producing – pagan, davis, the mejia kid who made the yankee hitters look like dirt – the yankees have …wait for it…..Mark Melancon”
Really? where did Joba come from? where did Hughes?, that Russo kid got a big hit last night, D-Rob was a PO genius, Cervelli??
STHU.
Now watch, we will make Santana look like the 2005 Santana.
And we will save Manual’s job and have to deal with the loser Mets fans on WFAN.
Screw this team. Can’t even beat the awful Mets.
I didn’t get a chance to watch the game but followed it on gameday. That showed Hughes velocity never exceeding 92. I s that what the TV radar showed? If so, that is a couple mph less than his prior starts. A 91 mph fastball over the plate gets hit a lot more than one 94.
Based on the postgame questions, Tex is going to get flamed in tomorrows paper.
“CB May 22nd, 2010 at 10:51 pm
For all the people who are constantly knocking Posda – you can see how dramatic the difference is when he’s in the line up.
When he’s in the line up the dynamic is entirely different because their line up is much longer comparatively speaking.
The team started pressing up at the plate after he got injured and went on the DL.”
——————
So true – saw that movie in 2008, too scary, really don’t want to see it again . . .
As for phil he has shown grit, and the fight we have been waiting for. It doesnt matter who is behind the plate know the problem is simple he has fallen in love with the cutter. This reminds me of a younger andy pettite, when he was locating his cutter he was dominant when he wasn’t it was like a chein ming wang last year. Phil needs to use the curveball and change more and place the cutter were applicable, thats how he was dominant to begin the year and he has lost his way.
Tex should get an interview tonight.
Nick
I was thinking more like this
http://blog.pennlive.com/midst.....weaver.jpg
He is swinging like he’s hurt.
so since jeter and tex need to benched, heres our lineup for tomorrow:
Gardner CF
Swish RF
Miranda 1B
Alex 3B
Cano 2B
Cisco C
Russo LF
Pena SS
CC P
now thats scary
Betsy,
Pelfrey is pitching well and has a great arm, but put him in a hitters park in the AL East and he wouldn’t be able to function.
The Mets pitching really isn’t that bad. Perez and Maine are dreadful, but their bullpen has one of the best ERAs in the league, and Pelfrey has been their best starting pitcher.
Girardi just say what you want to say, instead of mumbling…He is so scared to call a player out. Everyone knows that Tex is lost and Hughes got beat again tonight by his cutter that comes over the plate like a meatball.
Damon sure would look nice batting behind Jets wouldn’t he? Rather than a guy like Gardner who is a singles hitter and is no threat.
And how about Matsui pinch hitting as the DH instead of Thames or Miranda?
How does Cashman have a job? Got rid of Damon, signed Winn, signed Park… this is how he planned to defend a title? Shows how he would perform if he had a normal payroll. An average GM who thinks he is smarter than he is.
how many of you actually remember when Joe G was fiery as a manager.
Now hes gone all Channing Frye on us.
I want the old Joe
“Thames is a hacker
Much rather have Miranda agaisnt a wild guy like K-Rod.
Thames can only hit lefties. Papelbon was an accception”
Thames has shorten his swing and covers the fastball, Nieves has no splitter, he has no consistant out pitch. Heck, Russo in the next AB figured that out, Miranda is good but he’s not that experienced plus IT MADE NO SENSE, you gave that SU man, who is a SCRUB too much respect.
Girardi needs to get in Mark Tex face and call him out and sit him down. DFA Winn, and call out the captain and tell him to start acting like a captain. Girardi stop trying to be like weak Francona and make a move.
GTLU tomorrow should be fun. One hint, I won’t have Teixeira batting 3rd.
Cashman needs to take Jeter out for another dinner. Maybe he hasn’t been told, (like Torre wouldn’t) that the front office has concerns about his lack of hitting.
nice shirt Jack
Sure is nice paying a guy $180 million for a guy who can’t hit unless others around him are hitting.
Hate to say it, aside from the injuries, some guys seem to have lost the hunger.
Repeating is hell.
Posada is their emotional leader.
No fire.
Thanks, Tarheelyank, I really needed to see that.
Hmmmm, I guess the expected kind of pic would look a little pervy, huh?
The strongest argument against a DH-less NL is the disparity in pitching, PERIOD.
nice shirt Jack
============
its peachy.
Pelfrey is decent. But that is what happens when the bats are struggling you make the pitcher look much better than they are. Look at the Nats last season. The Yanks made them look like cy young winners. The Phillies just smacked Pelfrey around. The Yanks will make Sanatana look like the greatest pitcher ever tomorrow.
JK, we’ll never know. It doesn’t matter really because the Yankees are struggling no matter who they play. Pelfrey is a story, well the story, for the Mets, but as Yankee fans, the story would be (a) the offense’s ongoing futility and (b) Phil’s struggles.
The strongest argument against a DH-less NL is the disparity in pitching that exists between the AL and NL, PERIOD.
planned to defend a title? Shows how he would perform if he had a normal payroll. An average GM who thinks he is smarter than he is.
=========================
Smarter than a 5th grader?
Thames or Miranda shouldn’t be hitting in big spots. The top of the order needs to get it done. I’m sick of needing Thames, Winn, Miranda, and others to have a big hit in the 8th, 9th, because we can’t hit with risp. It’s hard to win baseball games this way.
austinmac
Hughes hit 94 during the game.
Tex is not a member of the core 4
Torre would have embarrassed him like he should be
That is Girardi’s weak spot as a manager. He is too much of a player’s manager. Has no guts to call them out. Only benched Cano after we were out of the playoff race.
Girardi needs to grow a pair and call out his struggling players. These are the Yankees. They can’t take their sweet time to fix themselves. If they don’t, they will be replaced.
how many of you actually remember when Joe G was fiery as a manager?
You won’t Trevor but unfortunately, Girardi will.
That’s the problem and it’s a BIG problem.
There is no answer to Tex no longer being able to hit.
Only thing they can is curtail his PT and hope for the best.
Playing him everyday is no longer the answer. It’s not working.
I still say Thames hits one to another area code vs a scrub like FERNANDO ‘FREAKIN’ NIEVES!!!
Either that or HBP or BB or WP, runs scores then is BB.
This slump is frustrating because it seems like the Yankees bring the tying run to the ninth inning in every game, and when they fall short, it’s easy to point out the little things they did wrong which may have cost the game. For example, Winn not catching the flyball and Tex striking out in the 8th.
please can we end the posada bs, does everyone forget it was only a few years back that he was the double play king, yes he gets some hits from time to time in the clutch but he is no yogi berra or johnny bench.
my lineup for tommorow would be
ss Jeter
RF Swisher
2b Cano
3b Arod
1b Texiera
c Cervelli
LF Russo
P Sabathia
CF Gardner
Joe overmanaged when he took the bat out of Thames’ hands. The match-up of Miranda vs. Nieves was fine. My problem is wasting one of the few good hitters on your depleted bench in a NL game. If Cevelli had gotten on base in the 9th inning the pitcher’s slot was up next. Joe would have had to hit Moeller or Pena with the game on the line! If it were up to me I would have let Thames hit against Nieves earlier, and kept Miranda around for the 9th inning.
One other thing. How about starting Tex in left field and Miranda at 1st base for a game or two? First off, it keeps Wynn’s bat out of the lineup. Second, maybe changing things up for Tex a bit in the field gets his mind off his hitting – which is probably what he needs to do right now.
“Much rather have Miranda agaisnt a wild guy like K-Rod.”
—————
Thames is a good hitter and most of the time gives you a good at bat. Krod won’t throw his fastball anymore because batters have being tattooing it. Miranda seems to be a fastball only guy. He swung at 2 pitches totally off the plate. I would rather have the experience in that spot.
Man you guys are so funny.
It is such a f’n long season and you guys are in a state of panic.
Are you for real or is this for show?
But Bruney and Coke > Park and Logan.
how many of you actually remember when Joe G was fiery as a manager.
scuffling… big time.
NY has so many bad GMs that he really takes less heat then he should.
I’d say Cash is worse than Glenn Sather, on the same level as Isiah and Omar Minaya
He is simply an average GM who has a big wallet. No one in right right mind gets rid of Damon and Matsui for garbage like NJ or a platoon painter like Curtis.
And can we just DFA Winn. The guy can’t do anything right.
Can someone please remind me what Bostonian I despise the most? Im having trouble remembering
Really? where did Joba come from? where did Hughes?, that Russo kid got a big hit last night, D-Rob was a PO genius, Cervelli??
**********************
What part of THIS YEAR didn’t you understand (here read it again “people talk about how bad the mets minor league system is at least they have some people they called up this year that have been producing ) Hell if you’d like maybe you could have mentioned Jeter, Posada, MO and Cano are from the yankee minor leagues as well. So Russo is now a stud because he got ONE F’ING HIT. And i didn’t know D-Rob was a police officer.
What is the Yankees record on national TV this year? I feel like they’ve stunk on ESPN and been almost equally terrible on FOX.
Nick
It would have been real easy to post a little hottie, but this blog needs a little grandmotherly love.
He is simply an average GM who has a big wallet. No one in right right mind gets rid of Damon and Matsui for garbage like NJ or a platoon painter like Curtis.
===================
George would not let this happen.
The young tight money intellects have taken over.
Tex in left field? Really??? How dumb are you?
“Torre would have embarrassed him like he should be
Don’t be ridiculous. The idea that the manager should publicly call out a player is childish. It’s something that would happen with the mets organization.
Reporters are trying to goad Girardi into creating fire in the media and clubhouse.
He’s never done that before and he’s not going to now.
Publicly calling out a player like Tex who is struggling and is still clearly putting effort in is just nonsense.
Absurd
I disagree about Curtis. I thought that was a good move. But he should have kept Matsui or Damon.
Joe G is actually too laid back as a manager.
Torre was the one who treated every game like it was game 7.
Girardi treats these games like it is no big deal and manages with no urgency. He puts in awful pitchers like Park and Logan in close games, lets Miranda pinch hit, and keeps Tex in the lineup.
Note to Joe – keep using Park, he will cost you games.
I’m writing this date down on my calendar as a bookmark so come September as they’re closing in on 100 wins we can revisit this date and revisit the ridiculous comments from today……Incredible, that’s all I can say……..
“George would not let this happen.”
I guess you missed the early 1990′s. Lot’s of investment and good stuff going on then.
we got it all tonight. the gardner grounder to 3rd, the tex strike out, the jeter bases loaded grounder to ss.
How does Tiex hit a low outside 2 seamer or changeup? The guy has a serious hole in his swing.
You’re right, Tarheelyank, but I would be careful using the phrase ‘pom poms’ while there’s an active investigation underway.
Yeah, callling out a player and embarrassing him is going to make him work harder and care more. That’s the Steinbrenner way of doing things – how’d that work out?
Girardi is an empathetic human being and he cares about his players…………..that’s a good thing.
What value does Granderson really bring if he is a platoon player who strikes out so much?
He isin’t going to be a factor in big spots because Manual would have just brought in Feliciano who would have easily retired him.
Granderson’s impact will be minimal. He isin’t going to carry this team and if he has to, we’re in big trouble. The first 5 need to step up.
george would not have let matsui and damon go, not both, and he would have gotten holliday.
go ahead , spew.
“Girardi is an empathetic human being and he cares about his players…………..that’s a good thing.”
I agree, Betsy. Girardi is a family man and the entire Yankees team is one giant family!
BTW Granderson has a GW HR that still hasn?t landed vs BOS. Damon has one big hit this season, Matsui can?t field and takes up the DH spot.
**************************
Uh granderson’s homerun was on april 8 – thats like 2 months ago – and he hadn’t hit another one for a month before he went on the DL – and he has a total of ZERO hr’s in friendly yankee stadium
Damon looked pretty good against the yankees a few weeks ago, getting on base, getting key hits and helping the tigers WIN BALLGAMES
hmm lets see…matsui is in the lineup everyday, nick johnson isn’t – seems to me i’d rather have a guy i’m paying 6 million dollars actually playing
I still think this team will come out of it. But changes need to be made.
ss Jeter
RF Swisher
2b Cano
3b Arod
1b Texiera
c Cervelli
LF Russo
P Sabathia
CF Gardner
This should be the lineup going foward. It offers balance and until tex starts to hit it gives cano protection so they can’t pitch around him, and i’d rather have swisher up in a big spot then a punch and judy hitter in gardner. As for who the worst GM’s are in NY I would rate Cashman 4th behind Isiah thomas who destroyed the Knicks, Sather who teases ranger fans every year with over priced piles of garbage on the ice, Steve phillips who came closer to scoring with an Intern at espn than his teams ever had at winning, and than theres good old cash who other than this past year has done piss poor for the past decade plus as the GM
you revamp a championship team as if you reinventing the wheel .
i thought the RS patented that.
On top of that you Pagan in that same sentence, Pagan isn’t a Mets prospect.
Sure, Girardi can continue to be empthatic as he watches his WC lead slip away
Nice guys finish last.
Chew out the struggling players or it is going to cost you. Tex must be benched until he starts to hit.
“Damon looked pretty good against the yankees a few weeks ago, getting on base, getting key hits and helping the tigers WIN BALLGAMES
hmm lets see…matsui is in the lineup everyday, nick johnson isn’t – seems to me i’d rather have a guy i’m paying 6 million dollars actually playing”
Like our guys aren’t helping us win ballgames hitting? we haven’t had walkoff hits central, but comeback wins we have.
Matsui doesn’t have many yrs. left, he’s getting drained daily. Meanwhile Johnson is out but Miranda steps into his spot as an upgrade.
I guess Girardi needs to be fired according to some on here LOL !
How do you spell scuffling? Y. A. N. K. E. E. S.
as long as gardner bats 2nd, this lineup will not be circular and we will not win.
jeter is not the leadoff hitter he was with damon behind him.
“He is simply an average GM who has a big wallet. No one in right right mind gets rid of Damon and Matsui for garbage like NJ or a platoon painter like ”
—————
I agree he is a very average gm. He is lucky he has steinbrenner’s money to bail him out from all his dumb moves. The fact that Damon or Matsui is not the dh is a joke.
Tex does not need to be benched. He needs to work with Kevin Long.
I wish we could know when the real SJ44 is on, so we could ask him if Tex is working with KLONG.
It’s probably the real SJ in the mornings, so Im going to ask tomorrow!
Reading some Mets board, just makes my blood boil hyping up Pelfrey… how tough he is and how he shut us down and how he is better than Hughes and he proved it tonght etc.
Buchholz used to be enemy $1, now it is Pelfrey. I will be gladly cheering his demise.
Oh, and Tex has to be benched. He is hitting worse than Ramiro Pena.
Tex should try to bunt to the left side to thwart the shift. His uppercut swing is not smart baseball..Number one rule, if you can`t catch up with the fastball you go to a lighter bat and try to hit ball up the middle. A level swing is still the best approach in making contact.
We will never win a World Series will Girardi as manager!
Tom in NJ May 22nd, 2010 at 11:28 pm
HAHAHAHAHAHAAH!! I needed that laugh tonight!!!!!
I agree. Joe G is bland, bland, bland.
Steinbrenner GAVE Cashman the money. He just chose to spend it on garbage like NJ, Winn, Park. Combine that money and you have Damon back for a year.
And Matsui wanted to come back. But no… let’s trade 3 good prospects, including a guy who leads the league in hits, for a guy who can’t hit lefties and is going to be 30 years old. Great trade.
I agree with the person who said Cashman tries to prove his smartness. But in the end, he just looks foolish.
Dassit -
Tex has more experience playing outfield than Russo. I don’t see you calling Girardi dumb for putting Russo in left field.
How about you explain exactly why it’s stupid? You prefer to have Tex and Winn’s bats in the lineup over Tex and Miranda’s? And you don’t think perhaps changing things up a bit for him might get his mind off his hitting?
People questioning this teams heart and hunger are directly questioning Derek Jeter. He’s the captain and the right now under performing nearly as much as any player on the team.
So if you think the team has no hunger and can’t do the things needed to compete clearly don’t think much of jeter.
When you look at it right now besides the injuries there are two players underperforming. Tex and Jeter. Gardner, ARod, Cano, Swisher, and Cervelli are all playing well. This line up is not designed to be all that dependent on DH.
So the two players who would have to be lacking hunger are Jeter and Tex. That’s quite a statement to be making.
The rotation has been great. Can’t knock them for not being hungry.
The bull pen has been erratic but that’s the way bull pens are. Though Mariano hasn’t been great this year so if the team isn’t hungry you’d have to conclude that Mo isn’t hungry either.
Not hungry. That’s a strong theory there.
Tex’s recent struggles with the shift remind me of when every yankee fan was screaming at the top of their lungs for the “roidbino” Giambi to slap it down the third base side, if this is what we have to look forward to it’s going to be a long couple years, and last time i checked its almost june and he is still frigid with no heat wave in sight
Here’s a question-
If a hitter is scuffling at the top of the lineup. Big time slump. Instant out. How the player is treated in an attempt to correct his problem(s) done by (a) working it out while playing and sitting in the same spot or (b) dropped in the lineup dependent on how much he makes? ie, $20 mil a year versus $500 k?
I am embarrased to post here.
Is this the intellect of a typical Yankee fan?
Or are the intelligent ones smart enough to not come here.
Teix, needs to play. Although I would think about benching him tomorrow since Johan will throw in the strikezone and that plays into Miranda’s power, he won’t swing at crappy pitches outside of the strikezone.
Pelfrey was amazing tonight, you can’t take that away, but we helped him in so many ways w/ Winn in the lineup.
We loss this game w/ 2 big situtations
Benching Thames vs Nieves and putting in a inexperienced batter vs a wild pitcher
Chan Ho Park pitching like crap
As much as I love emphathetic nice guys, as a manager, you have to make tough calls in that position.
I’m a manager myself, and it’s no fun at all when you have to promote the less-than-nice achievers over the nice-but-no-cigar guys.
Results count — even in baseball where it’s more of a “family atmosphere” among the coworkers.
Girardi is not the problem
Girardi didn’t ask to replace one of his best clutch hitters in Damon with a streaky platoon player
Girardi didn’t ask to replace a clutch warrior in Matsui with an injury prone bust.
Girardi didn’t ask for a batting practice 37 yr old NL scrub like Park for his bullpen.
Girardi didn’t ask for 37 yr old NL scrub Randy Winn on the bench.
The anger is misguided. Girardi is doing all he can. He can’t hit for us.
look brandon you seem like a good guy and i’m not really here to argue with you or anyone – i still think the yankees will turn it around – they do every year
but answer me this honestly – would you rather have had miranda, granderson or johnson up hitting in the 9th inning tonight or damon or matsui – if you ask me thats a no brainer – and thats why i said cashman brought in losers to replace the proven winners that we had..
plain and simple….and true.
blah, blah, blah, Pat M, blah, blah, blah, Nick, blah blah blah, CB, Blah blah, blah, blake
This place has turned into a Far Side cartoon.
I don’t think Cashman has been the best GM. But if Cashman gave Damon what he wanted many of you would be calling him a fool for giving him all that money. You can’t have it both ways.
Eiland really has to get it threw to Hughes and Cervelli that getting beat by his cutter isn’t going to happen anymore. This is 2 games in a row that the Yanks lost because of that stupid cutter. Wright wouldn’t even come close to hitting his fastball and he gave him 2 meatballs. Its pathetic.
Jeter is playing hurt and is frustrated.
Tex looks lost, maybe he has family problems.
Who knows whats going on?
They are an injured team and that is the bottom line.
There’s no way that’s the real SJ44. Tex can no longer hit?? Give me a break, do you think he forgot how? You have to let him play and work through this slump. Give him a day off to clear his head and start from square 1 with K Long.
He probably won’t finish the season with his usual numbers but he’ll come out of this slump eventually.
Santana won’t throw his changeup to LHH.
Miranda needs to be in the lineup tomorrow.
Teix at this point simply has no shot against Santana. He will feed him change-up after changeup and get him out easily. Miranda can take his changeup the other way.
Jeremy i agree we wouldn’t have liked it if he had given damon what he wanted but the fact that he signed nick with no back up plan and his bench is pena, winn, and thames is something we all should be upset about.
Who wrote that Girardi should publicly call out guys? Oh, BAD move. What a way to really destroy your credibility as a manager with your players. It’s not like Tex is playing like he doesn’t give a darn. You sit those players.
CB’s right.
The media’s looking for a story — that’s their job. I don’t fault them for asking at all.
How do you f with a championship team and retool.
This is karma.
Winn is just awful. He can’t hit a fastball right down the middle. He just fouls off good pitches and swings and misses on bad pitches. Plus, he is NOT a good defensive player. He is slightly better than Thames, but thats not really saying much. He takes terrible routes and misjudges balls all the time. The Yankees desperately miss having Gardy in left and Grandy in center. Russo should be starting every day. He already has only 10 less hits and 5 less RBIs in TWO GAMES!!! Is that scary or what?
Not one interview with a player.
What is that about.
I’m outta here, this place is lame.
Look at all these geniuses coming out of the woodwork telling us what the Yankees need to do with this and that player.
There is no amount of shuffling and changing the players around is going to change a single thing.
When teams go into these kind of slumps, player shuffling and changing does not do anything.
Give me one example of changes made from the past, that had any effects ending a team slump.
They’ve just got to be allowed to play their way out of it.
CC has to do a better job than Hughes did tonight
Going down 3-0 may as well be 10-0 with this offense.
CC has to match 0s with Santana until the offense decides it wants to show up. If he doesn’t, then a couple of runs is all they need. K-Rod is available. Jerry is managing for his job he won’t stay away from him. A win in the subway series will go a long way to saving his job. Manual will manage to win.
CC has to do a better job of attacking and putting hitters away than Hughes did.
I said that Joe should call out Tex but not in public. I said he should talk to him and sit him down.
We’re schuffling and the Sux are showing life.
This thread is just embarrassing as a yankee fan.
The notion that the yankee fan base are somehow more sophisticated or more committed fans then elsewhere is just laughable.
The yankees aren’t hungry. Girardi should publicly call out players and do so through the media in a post game interview. The yankees don’t spend enough money.
Just embarrassing.
Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 11:33 pm
I don?t think Cashman has been the best GM. But if Cashman gave Damon what he wanted many of you would be calling him a fool for giving him all that money. You can?t have it both ways.
*****************
So if jeter continues his horrid hitting the rest of the year its Ok if Cashman gives him 20 million per year for 4 years?
“Jeremy i agree we wouldn’t have liked it if he had given damon what he wanted but the fact that he signed nick with no back up plan and his bench is pena, winn, and thames is something we all should be upset about.”
Seconded. NJ is not an adequate replacement for Damon and the bench was awful.
Cashman had 3 options for DH. Damon, Matsui or Vlad. He could of put all 3 names in a hat and picked one of them and everyone would of been happy. I think Damon was the best option. And Cashman comes up with Johnson??!!! Um what is he crazy??. Nick is an option for a team like the Royals..not the Yanks.
Is there any chance they’ll charge an error to Wynn? It’s happened before after a game.
I still don’t get why Yankee fans would ever question their team’s effort; that tells me they have no respect for them. If they did, they would never accuse them of not putting out an effort – that’s about the worst thing you can accuse a team/player of. There is a HUGE difference between not executing and not caring and some people don’t get that.
Whoever said NY sports fans are the most knowledgeable was no genius.
Just some blowhard who annointed NY as the center of the universe and the reason we are despised.
200 million,
They have no choice. They have to give Jeter a lifetime contract.
Going to be a pain, but they left themselves no choice. A good GM would use Jeter’s down year as leverage to shave $5 mil or so off the contract, but Cash won’t.

Only if Winn touched the ball. If he didnt, it cant be an error.
I see Cashman losing his job over this badly fielded team. He cut too deep in the Hotstove, and will pay dearly for the likes of the Winn, Nick Johnson Park and Thames signings.
Joe has had a lot of injuries too many, and will probably get a 1 yr extension.
Jeremy — I’m all for private chats with your players. I’ll bet Joe someone who’s good to talk to, as well. You could confide in him with confidence. Who knows what’s in Tex’s head right now? He sure isn’t bringing it with him to the field, though.
Some people also refuse to believe that Cash did the best he could with Damon……….no point in trying to convince them of that.
Has anyone seen Hughes throw back to back curveballs all year?

What are you smoking. Boston is the self-proclaimed and media enhanced hub of the universe.
the gay Yankee fan May 22nd, 2010 at 11:38 pm
Look at all these geniuses coming out of the woodwork telling us what the Yankees need to do with this and that player.
There is no amount of shuffling and changing the players around is going to change a single thing.
When teams go into these kind of slumps, player shuffling and changing does not do anything.
Give me one example of changes made from the past, that had any effects ending a team slump.
They?ve just got to be allowed to play their way out of it.

Billy Martin once put out a lineup by taking names out of a hat when the yankees were “scuffling” and it worked…i can’t tell you exactly when because i was only like 8 years old but it was in the late 70′s
CB
Thanks for all your insights. I appreciate it and know many others do as well.
Goodnight all.
Winn touched the ball, but the Mets official scorer is not going to take hit away from his own player…………It really doesn’t matter anyway.
Cash was playing a game of chicken with Boras and thought he won.
CB, yeah it’s pretty sad. We should probably log off now and save a bit of sanity =/
What did everyone expect signing NJ? Signing a guy who has been on the DL for 10 years straight and toiled on the last place Nationals for 7 years?
If he didn’t want Damon, he had to have a better alternative.
And don’t get me started on Park/Winn. You could have seen those disasters coming from a mile away.
Oh and I just love how all you are crying about Damon and Matsui.
I have seen so many times Damon and Matsui failing at big moments over the years. They were not as perfect as many of you would like to remember.
If they were on the club now, they’d be struggling like everybody else and all of you would be crying about not having somebody else.
Jeter is working hard to obtain his 13M per year contract
“Santana won’t throw his changeup to LHH.
Miranda needs to be in the lineup tomorrow.
Teix at this point simply has no shot against Santana. He will feed him change-up after changeup and get him out easily. Miranda can take his changeup the other way.”
I agree, Teix right now wouldn’t hit Edwar Ramirez. I’d put Miranda to start over him and give Teix a night off, he needs it. It might even kick start him.
Winn needs to be DFA’d NOW! I don’t even want to explain this.
CB
What did you think of the Champions Lg. Final?
The Special One was special once again!!
“Has anyone seen Hughes throw back to back curveballs all year?”
Nope. But I’ve seen him do it plenty of times with his cutter.
LOL if you have to go back to the Billy Martin days (and you’re not even sure because too young LOL) then you have just proven my point.
All hell will really break loose if they get swept by the Twins, who finally beat us and are looking to turn the tide against us.
Yanks need to play hardball with Jeter
Let him go out on the open market and tell him we will match any offer he receives. See what his value is, and pay that.
Sign a 37 yr old SS who looks a step slow so far this year at your own risk.
Why are some people on here still talking about the Red Sox. The Rays are in first place right now and the Sox are not that great. Some of you are worse then Red Sox fans.
And that loser Kevin Millar lands a job on FOX?
Why do they hire all the ex-Red Sox?
Nomar, Schilling, Sean Casey, now Millar, all within the last 6 months.
And that Chris Rose is a clown too. They belong in the city of sleeze, thiefs, stranglers.
I don’t get why we’re supposed to instantly badmouth Damon and Matsui just because they’re no longer with us. Who are we going to turn on next year?
I recall Jeter saying that New York fans and Yankee fans in general are the best fans in the world…LMAO ! Yeah Right !
Hughes is a coward. He is not a big game pitcher. He choked tonight and pitch like a scared puppy against Davis. He was horrible against the red sox and he was brutal in the playoffs last year.
“I see Cashman losing his job over this badly fielded team. He cut too deep in the Hotstove, and will pay dearly for the likes of the Winn, Nick Johnson Park and Thames signings.”
Thames can’t field for crap, but he’s a clutch hitter. Respect that move.
Matsui was a disaster in the post season from 2004-2007. He was also hurt 3 out of the last 4 years & has no knees.
The Yankees sure miss his current .226 ba, .303 obp & .377 slg
The move was Damon and somehow him and his agent thought 1 year @ 8M was better than 2 years @ 14M
XLJ, when Hughes went into Fenway and sliced and diced them to the point if he wanted to he could have gone 9 IP vs them were you whining and w/e, no so STHU.
Park has had 6 appearances.
He has given up runs in 5 of them
STOP USING HIM. He is like a right handed Logan except with control but more gopher-ball tendencies.
Jeter is swinging at everything and looks like he has reverted back to his 2008 range in the field
Winn not being able to catch a routine flyball is a joke. He doesn’t deserve to wear the pinstripes.
Bow Wow
lol, they had to litter the already Red Sox infested media with more of them because we won the World Series.
You make a mistake on one thing. There is no such thing anymore as an ex-Red Sox. Once you’re a part of that “great” organization, that’s all you get mentioned as. Except if you were a failure like Renteria or you came to the Yankees like Damon.
Wang in Taiwan
Yes ! He needs to talk to someone and take some time off. Because this is really getting pathetic.
“.226 ba, .303 obp & .377 slg”
That’s Matsui-san’s current line?
Thank goodness we let him go. He’s a shell of himself.
Pelfrey was up to the challenge, Hughes was not. Simple as that.
Have to respect him… he shut us down. Not hard to shut our lineup down and he did in a game to save his manager’s job.
——
And get rid of CHOP. He sucks.
Did you mean Jim CantoRe???
That was brutal. Where are the big hits?
“Winn not being able to catch a routine flyball is a joke. He doesn’t deserve to wear the pinstripes.”
We see eye to eye on this.
Cano 12 walks, Jeter 9 walks
would you have ever believed that Cano would have better plate discipline than Jeter.
I dont think Jete understands that the Job of the lead off man is to get on base!
Brandon,
And that line is still better than what Johnson will do.
New Post
Jeter is a joke to all leadoff hitters. He always swings at the first pitch. Shouldn’t a leadoff hitter try working the count. He doesn’t walk anymore. His OBP is embarassing.
Girardi needs to make a statement and strip him from being the captain. That will get the attention of the clubhouse.
Gardner needs a day off. Girardi has played him out in the field in every inning including the doubleheader against the tigers. Put Russo in center against Santana.
We’re talking about Boston because we could’ve buried the at 8 games back on Tuesday but we blew a 5 run lead in the 8th and kept blowing. Now they’re in spiriting distance. Not to mention 3 or 4 other teams.
XLJ
Just proved my point that Yankee fans and New York fans are not the best fans in the World.
Hughes “a coward” The guy is 23 and this is his first year as a starter. So time for you to STFU and log off the computer.
K A B O O M , the sound you just heard is the Yankees season imploding!!
Hughes still threw strikes. As long as he does that he’ll be fine. And his cutter will be a weapon for him the future. But he should cut down a little.
Brandon’s Awesome (B/c my AWESOMENESS believes in letting Thames bat vs scrubs like Fernando NIEVES!) May 22nd, 2010 at 11:54 pm
“Winn not being able to catch a routine flyball is a joke. He doesn’t deserve to wear the pinstripes.”
We see eye to eye on this.

Exactly I would DFA him tonight!!!!!
new post >
Neither Tex nor Jeter are hitting but of the two I am more concerned about Tex. I think Jeter is playing hurt since he was hit on the hand but he won’t leave the line-up and won’t admit to it. He will play through it eventually and come around. But Tex concerns me. Except for a brief streak in the beginning of May, he has generally looked lost all year. Everytime he gets a hit I figure it’s the start of a hot streak but so far I’ve been wrong each time. Hard to win when your leadoff and number 3 hitters aren’t providing any offense.
CB, Pat M., and other real baseball fans, i.e., fans that aren’t still in their rompers thinking that what goes on in freakin May is the true measure of a team’s future success.
Give it a rest!
If this stuff is still going on in mid August, then start your whining, otherwise shut up!

——————————————————————————————————————–
Wanna bet ? So, you’re saying if a guy is camped under a ball and takes his eye off of it for an instant and it lands right next to him, he won’t get a error because he didn’t touch it ?
Not hardly !!! ERROR !!!
Don’t worry about Jeter or Tex ! Gotta replace Winn and get a couple of relievers before long. When fully healthy this team will be there for playoffs.
