Hughes’ turn at the plate

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on May 22, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

When Phil Hughes was looking at colleges, he was being recruited primarily as a pitcher, but he was also expected to swing the bat a little bit. He could play the infield corners, and he was pretty big for a teenager so he had some pop.

Tonight he’ll get his chance to hit in the big leagues. This will be his first start in an interleague game on the road.

“I was just big my senior year,” Hughes said. “So if I got the bat on the ball it was OK. I didn’t have a great approach or anything. I was just looking for a fastball every single pitch, and if I got one, sometime I could hit it. That was the extent of my hitting ability.”

As long as he doesn’t hit his finger on a bunt attempt, I’m sure he’ll be fine.

I’m so disappointed I don’t get coverage of this game tonight. :(

    Go Hughes!!

Hughes will be seeing a heavy dose of curves thus afternoon after giving away his hitting strategy ;)

I might be a little late to the party with this one, but why would the Yanks trade for a guy who was on the DL for depression? That doesn’t sound like someone who could handle the Bronx when he is struggling.

All signs point to the Yanks not trying to add more payroll. They already are paying out more than last year. Unless they can dump a salary, I don’t see them making a move to add more. They would really have to be blown away.

    Let’s go Yankees!!!!!

    Happy Yankee viewing!

  8. CRAWDADDY (Boycott ESPN-NY) May 22nd, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Yankee fans that live outside the Yankees home area are going to get screwed by Fox moving their game to Saturday nights. They will have four or more regional games which means you’ll get one of those games while the rest of the Saturday night games are blackout in your area. If you live in the Boston or Chicago or Philly and you’re a Yankee fan and the Yankees are playing on Saturday night, but are not playing any of those teams then most likely the Yankee game is blackout for you and you’ll get whatever regional game from Fox in your area.

Sadly, this is my story. Sigh. I’m stuck with the Cubs game tonight. :(

I’m going out anyway-but if I actually got to watch the Yankee game I may have altered my plans. lol

  10. Erin May 22nd, 2010 at 12:22 pm

Have a fun day at the beach Erica! :)

  11. CRAWDADDY (Boycott ESPN-NY) May 22nd, 2010 at 12:27 pm

I’m stuck with the Tigers game in Michigan. I’ve read direct quotes from Ed Goren, the president of Fox sports and this format of showing regional Saturday night games will continue if successful and might be more so next season. Yankee fans living outide the NY area will most likely be blackout of seeing any Yankees games on Saturday night unless the Yankees are playing the home team in your area.

We are screwed! When that happens, I will boycott Saturday night baseball and do other things instead.

  12. DB May 22nd, 2010 at 12:29 pm

    Craw

You did in fact say that about Higgy and I said you were right he’d have to pick it up in order to earn a promotion.

But where I think you’re wrong is Murphy could definitely swing his way right on to Tampa’s roster by July if he’s raking. He has an advanced bat so that he’d probably be able to more than hold his own there and he’s a quick study who has supposedly really picked up the nuances of the position very quickly. A couple of months understudy with Higgy would be a good thing for his development behind the plate

  16. CRAWDADDY (Boycott ESPN-NY) May 22nd, 2010 at 12:39 pm

    Champ,

In my opinion, the Yankees won’t push Murphy to the FSL because he’s new to catching. We’ll find out soon enough whether I was right or not.

Silliness is always welcome and usually necessary before the games. there cerainly isn’t any during and after the games. I was sure that he had pitched long the night before, but, had to check to make sure my mind wasn’t playing tricks (no smart ass remarks, Randy) and it was really on Wednesday night. Robertson has looked great in his last few games. Hopefully, he’s turned a corner.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Phil was to get a hit, but I’d tell him not to swing.

A May game vs. the Mets is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Losing Phil would be the polar opposite of meaningless.

Speculating about whether or not Greinke wants to play in NY is good fodder for a slow Saturday morning.

However, Cashman has a history of taking the path of least resistance (albeit more expensive).

Why trade for Greinke, when he could just pursue Cliff Lee with cash?

Someone asked about Yankee fans wanting to DFA Winn when Granderson comes back? I feel bad because I almost posted something last night. But how about an exercise? What would Russo have to do to stay on the big league roster when Granderson comes back?

  39. Fran (the original) May 22nd, 2010 at 1:04 pm

  48. m May 22nd, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Since Russo’s been prepped to be a UT/SuperUT player, he’d have to show that he’s a good fielder. That’s 1A. Show that he can hit major league pitching. And someone else would have to totally suck. If Russo could play SS, that would solve a lot of problems, but at the expense of Ramiro.

  49. m May 22nd, 2010 at 1:15 pm

There was a tiny Lackey v. AJ debate last week. Some of you still liking Lackey? I don’t recall him having so much command issues when he was with the Angels. :)

  51. Dylan May 22nd, 2010 at 1:17 pm

Why can’t Russo play SS? Does he not have the arm strength? If thats the case, the Yankees should move A-Rod or Cano to short when Russo is in the game. I know that will never happen, but both guys have the arm strength. If Russo is a significantly better hitter than Pena, I think its worth it.

  52. GreenBeret7 May 22nd, 2010 at 1:18 pm

David Adams of Trenton was removed from the game against Portland with a leg injury. The portland 2nd baseman stepped on Adams leg on a slide into 2nd base in the top of the first inning. No report on what the injury was but Adams had to be helped off of the field.

  53. m May 22nd, 2010 at 1:19 pm

    gfd,

Lee had 4 runs through however many innings. Then he lost it, gave up 2, reliever allowed 2 more inherited runners to score. But there was no way Lee was losing that game. When it rains it pours in Seattle, though. 15 runs (all early ones, too).

I’m not a huge Lee fan. He’s good and all, but I’m not tripping over myself to fawn all over him. If they sign him, I’ll cheer for him for sure.

Either they cut Winn or they send down Ramiro in order to keep Russo up in the big leagues (when Grandy returns). I hate Winn so much, but they’re gonna keep him around for a while longer because he’s a healthy body in the outfield. His time with the Yankees is almost up.

Lackey hasn’t been pitching good but he is obviously better than he has shown recently. Then again facing the Phils is a little different than Seattle and the A’s who he faced often with the Angels. Also the smaller Fenway dump ballpark willl factor in.

  69. GreenBeret7 May 22nd, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Hector Noesi is starting the first game of the Trenton Double Header. I fully expect him to strangle replacement 2nd baseman for screwing up 2 plays at 2nd and costing him 2 runs.

  72. 86w183 May 22nd, 2010 at 1:28 pm

Russo probably can play SS for a day, but he’s spent most of his career at 3B and 2B. Still I’d keep him and send Pena to Scranton when Granderson comes back.

I like Miranda/Thames sharing DH duty. Need Winn to be the fourth OF.

The Grienke trade talk is goofy. Kansas City is not giving up its No. 1 asset when he’s signed through 2012.

As for Lackey…. I thought his “stuff” was just ordinary last year and his fastball was slower. Still he’s a tough SOB and really knows how to compete. Glad the Yanks didn’t shell out five years for him…. equally glad it’s Boston that did. I bet AJ wins more games in his five Yankee seasons than Lackey will with the Sawx.

  75. m May 22nd, 2010 at 1:30 pm

    lol, Nick.

I’ve only got Hughes and now Russo. I think I can let Gardner go. He can now ground out to the SS without people screaming, “Why isn’t Gardner BUNTING???!!????!”

  76. GreenBeret7 May 22nd, 2010 at 1:30 pm

How about just waiting until Russo does a little more before retiring his number in Monument Park or trying to push him into the HOF while he’s playing. He’s not a great infielder, though, about average as a 2nd baseman. below average at short and 3rd.

  87. Nick in SF May 22nd, 2010 at 1:40 pm

I’m sorry, m, you can’t disavow your kids.

Without having had a full cup of coffee yet, I can think of Hughes, AJ, Cervelli, Gardner, and now Russo. Aceves might count too, and an argument could be made that certain non-Yankees possessed with island integrity are your kids too.

Step-kids don’t count; you can’t keep Joba from going to the ball forever.
(sorry for that awkward Joba-as-Cinderella analogy)

  88. m May 22nd, 2010 at 1:40 pm

    Fran,

    Sorry, it was marchand:

    Everyone,

No, it’s not that (at least for me). The thing is that he’s been groomed to be a Super UT (who can’t play SS? ), so I think one day he’ll be here. I’m not looking to DFA anyone for him, but he has a week to prove himself because Granderson is back next week (fingers X’d)

  89. Fran (the original) May 22nd, 2010 at 1:40 pm

    Mel,

Too bad Russo didn’t know about the tickets. But I guess he’ll know for tonight and tomorrow. Now I hope that Joe plays him.

  90. YanksfaninPA May 22nd, 2010 at 1:40 pm

    GTLU for tonight:

    Jeter SS
    Gardner CF
    Teix 1B

    Hugheeeeees P

  91. Rich in NJ May 22nd, 2010 at 1:44 pm

I think Russo can be like Randy Velarde.

  92. Mark May 22nd, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Wally Matthews show is in 1050 right now. Analyzing the Subway series with Seth Everett.

  93. John in NJ May 22nd, 2010 at 1:44 pm

I can’t remember the last time the Yankees played a regular season fox game at 7pm

  94. m May 22nd, 2010 at 1:45 pm

    Okay.

I never adopted Cervelli. You must have me confused with trisha. :P

Aceves was a man when he joined the Yankees.

AJ was just immature enough to qualify.

  95. Chris May 22nd, 2010 at 1:48 pm

  98. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 22nd, 2010 at 1:49 pm

Sorry I didn’t officially start GTLU – errands.

    GTLU is Open.

I have re-linked to the GTLU site, so you can check the schedule, standings, winning lineup, winners, paricipants. Once the game thread begins, I am going to take the link down. Thanks.

  99. Rich in NJ May 22nd, 2010 at 1:51 pm

I don’t understand why Girardi wold change the lineup. Russo hits RHP better than LHP.

  103. Rich in NJ May 22nd, 2010 at 1:55 pm

OMG, someone called Kim Jones and said Hughes should be a setup man for Joba when Mo finally retires because it’s easier to find a starter.

How was that guy smart enough to complete a phone call?

m, I have not confused you with Trisha. :?

You can say that Cervelli isn’t one of your kids, but your feelings for him are clear.

  106. GreenBeret7 May 22nd, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Sounds like one of the “smarter” LoHud posters made that call.

  107. SJ44 May 22nd, 2010 at 1:59 pm

    Rich,

Look at it another way. At least that moron took time out from here to make that call to Kim.

    It’s all good.

  112. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 22nd, 2010 at 2:02 pm

    CR9#2

    Is that you CR9?

I think I’m going to have to ask you to decide which lineup you want to go with. In the spirit of the game.

New thread. No more lineups in this one. Thanks!
