Ledger_Yankees Thames was available to PH yesterday. Gonna take fly balls tonight during bp for the first time since he got hurt.

  2. Brian May 22nd, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Russo should of got another start in LF

  3. m May 22nd, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Good news on Thames, we need warm bodies. :)

  4. m May 22nd, 2010 at 4:04 pm

What are Winn’s #s vs. Pelfrey?

  5. ac1 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I’m not a usual lineup complainer, but with Russo going 2-3 yesterday and being responsible for the only runs of the game for us, why does he get benched for Randy Lose?

  6. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:05 pm

    Paulie

How are the Mets, Canada? And in what sport?

  7. Paulie May 22nd, 2010 at 4:05 pm

    1-10, double, RBI vs. Pelfrey

  8. Giuseppe Franco May 22nd, 2010 at 4:05 pm

    # m May 22nd, 2010 at 4:04 pm

What are Winn’s #s vs. Pelfrey?

    ———–

    1-for-10, 2B, RBI

  9. ac1 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:06 pm

1-10? really? i can see if he was 9-10 with 9 HRs or something but come on…

  10. Jaret May 22nd, 2010 at 4:07 pm

    Awful lineup.

Great logic – take out the only guy who provided offense yesterday and put in one of the worst hitters in baseball who can’t even hit a 90 MPH fastball!

Hughes is gonna have to pitch a shutout today. If I were him, I’d be ticked. I have to actually try and get hits now because the guys in front of me wont.

  11. tom tresh 15 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:07 pm

And I thought Cervelli would get a rest tonight. Only goes to show I cant predict all of em

  12. Nick in SF May 22nd, 2010 at 4:07 pm

    “Thames…gonna take fly balls tonight…”

    Why start now? :?

  13. Sal May 22nd, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Winn sucks! Why not Russo in LF?

  14. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:07 pm

That does not make any sense. Russo should get the start after the professional ABs he had last night. Maybe Joe wants defense in there? Oh well, no big deal!

Until Cashman takes him away, he will continue to play him and he will continue to lose us games.

“What are Winn’s #s vs. Pelfrey?”

I plead the 5th on his behalf.

  18. Trevor May 22nd, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Russo hits right handers better anyway. Don’t get the match-up game.

Maybe Girardi doesn’t want Russo playing the outfield much and prefers to have a lefty facing Pelfrey.

Like it or not, Girardi is a big proponent for match ups, sometimes to a fault.

  20. Rich in NJ May 22nd, 2010 at 4:09 pm

    Four times? Five times?

You’d think people would learn by now.

  24. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:12 pm

    Paulie

lol, Sorry that i ruined your joke. Ive never even seen Canada in a World Cup. Brazil could be the Yankees, and England could be the Mets.

England always is hyped to do well, but always fall flat on their faces. They even collapsed in Euro 2008 qualifying (like the Mets collapse annually), and missed out on the Euros altogether.

  25. DT May 22nd, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Russo will play tomorrow vs. Santana.

He will also play Tuesday vs. Liriano.

    Winn vs. Lefters
    Russo vs. Righters

  26. John May 22nd, 2010 at 4:13 pm

i still dont get the people who claim hughes will have to pitch a shut out. I feel like everytime he pitches, people whine about that same thing. im just saying i dont like randy winn, but the other 7 should put up runs.

everytime people say he needs to pitch a shut out, bad lineup yadda yadda, we score 10-12 runs.

  39. Vincent May 22nd, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Russo will go down when Granderson comes back.

Winn is still a big part of this team and he will not relinquish his spot to Russo.

  40. Jerkface May 22nd, 2010 at 4:18 pm

i noticed that pedroia is hitting.275.

in combination with that receding hairline , that must mean he’s in decline and this is really the beginning of the end.

soon some injury will happen like a foul to his foot and when he goes to the disabled list that will further prove that he’s seen better days.

everyone knows that getting older makes you worse.

Dustin Pedroia is getting on base .375 and slugging nearly .500. He is hitting 23% line drives, walking the same as his career amount. The only different is that he is striking out a bit more.

I understand this was somewhat tongue in cheek, but this slump is NOT like Jeter’s other slumps. In 2004, when he was hitting .190, he walked the same amount, hit the same amount of line drives. Honestly I’d say he got a little unlucky.

Jeter in 2010 is walking less, swinging out of the zone more, taking less pitches, swinging and missing more, grounding the ball at a much higher rate than usual.

In April 10% of his hits were infield hits. And 20% of his flyballs became HRs. Both were not likely to keep happening. He only hit 12% line drives! His ld% for May is still under his normal career numbers.

Jeter just isn’t taking good swings most of the time. He needs to adjust to whatever the league is doing (which is apparently throw it in the dirt and he’ll chase)

  41. Roger(The Dutch Yankees Fan) May 22nd, 2010 at 4:19 pm

    CR9

    Haha thank u!

But you do realise van der Sar isn’t on the Dutch squad this WC

  42. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 22nd, 2010 at 4:19 pm

At this point, I’d say it’s almost traditional and a reverse jinx type thing to say that Hughes has to pitch a shut out.

  43. Andrew May 22nd, 2010 at 4:19 pm

USA aren’t flashy and decked out with enough big names to get any love. The way US fans prefer it. (at least, I do)

  44. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:19 pm

Who cares about the USA????

Yeah, Ill be rooting for the USA too. I thought that went without saying. But if it’s any of the 4 teams I mentioned or the USA, Im going with the 4 teams!!

  45. Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Girardi doesn’t have any problem playing Thames in RF on any given night so I would think Russo can’t be any worse in LF. Left/right matchups are such a joke. Russo had 2 hits last night just let him play. We have seen Winn and we don’t need to see anymore of him.

  46. Jay May 22nd, 2010 at 4:21 pm

I rooted for the Dominican team in the WBC. I rooted for all the Latin countries and the Dutch team. It was awesome seeing Sidney Ponson and co. beat up the Dominicans lol

And in soccer, I am rooting for Italy, Brazil, England.

I guess that makes me a communist.

  47. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:21 pm

    Roger

I didnt look at World Cup rosters yet? Why is VDS not on the roster? Who could possibly be better than VDS that’s Dutch? Or wait, didnt he retire from international competition?

  48. Andrew May 22nd, 2010 at 4:21 pm

Russo will be in there against Santana tomorrow night, I think. Girardi realizes Winn is atrocious against LHP and I doubt he wants to play Thames in Citi Field’s outfield on a tender ankle.

  49. Wes May 22nd, 2010 at 4:22 pm

See Winn flail or poke at pitches. See Winn sit down.

  50. Yank 97 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Whatever happened to that guy who headbutted that guy for Italy? Is he any good? Is he playing this year?

  51. Brandon's Awesome (B/c my AWESOMENESS believes in tasing fans that jump fences) May 22nd, 2010 at 4:22 pm

The only thing Winn has over Russo is he’s a better OF. That’s all.

    Like Rich pointed out…Winn v. Pelfrey: .100/.100/.200/.300 (10 AB)

    Russo (career)

    v. L: .259/.327/.349/.676
    v. R: .309/.370/.417/.787

Pelfrey is a sinker baller but Winn is not touching him, if the ball is hit on the ground Russo beats it over Winn any day of the week.

  52. Andrew May 22nd, 2010 at 4:23 pm

Zidane AKA one of the best of all time retired, the World Cup final in ’06 (featuring the headbutt) was his last international game.

  53. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:24 pm

    Yank97

Marco Materazzi, IIRC. And I thought that was the biggest scumbag move ever. Since Im not a diehard fan of Italy, it took the luster out of that victory. And I also rooted for France the rest of the way, because I AM IN LOVE WITH Zinedine Zidan Zizou!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  54. Roger(The Dutch Yankees Fan) May 22nd, 2010 at 4:25 pm

No problem. I always snap to attention when the name Francisco Cervelli comes up. ;)

  56. Pat M. May 22nd, 2010 at 4:26 pm

I’m not certain of all the numbers on Derek, but I don’t ever remember him chasing so many pitches out of the strike zone like he has the past few weeks…….Usually indicates that your pitch guessing……A couple of good ab’s and Derek will get back into a rhythm…..Texeria is a puzzle to me though….He’s pressing to much, maybe a game or two off would help

  57. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:28 pm

    Roger

Yep. I remember. VDS’s wife had a brain aneurysm or something similar, and her prognosis was not good. But then she recovered. EXCELLENT news for the one, the only, VDS!

  58. Trevor May 22nd, 2010 at 4:28 pm

If Girardi did further research, he would see that Russo is a much better hitter against righty’s. I don’t think he’s yet quite familiar with Russo’s strengths vs weaknesses. If it’s not that, then this move makes no sense.

  59. Macfan May 22nd, 2010 at 4:31 pm

    “# Vincent May 22nd, 2010 at 4:18 pm

Russo will go down when Granderson comes back.

Winn is still a big part of this team and he will not relinquish his spot to Russo.”

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I so hope you are wrong about the latter part of that statement Vince

“Winn is still a big part of this team”

Eek, shiver me timbers. Winn is the definition of a hanger on who has no business being on a contending team.

Once Granderson is back hopefully by the end of next week, we will see

    Jeter – SS – R
    Gardner – LF – L
    Teixeira – 1B – S
    Arod – 3B – R
    Cano – 2B – L
    Swisher – RF – S
    Granderson – CF – L
    Thames/Miranda – DH – R/L
    Cervelli – C – R

I hope Randy Winn is buried on the bench like he was when the season began and Granderson was healthy.

The less of him I see the better, I can’t stand watching the guy at the plate, in the field or in a Yankees uniform period.

  60. Jerkface May 22nd, 2010 at 4:32 pm

Hughes so far is a fly ball pitcher, maybe he just wants the better defensive unit for him?

  61. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:32 pm

I havent seen Betsy today or yesterday since people decided they were going to attack her for no reason.

    I hope she’s okay.

  62. Jerkface May 22nd, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Does anyone know why David Adams was removed from the first trenton game after walking in the first inning? The only time he ran the bases was on a double play ball from Laird.

  63. Joe May 22nd, 2010 at 4:33 pm

I would kill to be at one of these World Cup games… the atmosphere must be 10000x that of a Yankees World Series game.

Not to mention, I will be surrounded by guys burning flags and guys with grenade launchers and flamethrowers attacking eachother lol

  64. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:33 pm

And Roger, I’ll still be cheering for the Dutch for you! But not over England or Brazil. Over Italy, yes. I like the Dutch kits!!

  65. Roger(The Dutch Yankees Fan) May 22nd, 2010 at 4:34 pm

Inter started this game with NO Italian player. That’s ridiculous!

  66. Andrew May 22nd, 2010 at 4:34 pm

It seems that Pena’s roster spot is more in jeopardy than Winn’s right now. Winn would be the primary back-up defensive OFer once Granderson returns. They are not sending Russo in to play D in the outfield late in games. If Russo gets some more hits in the next week, I could see them optioning Pena and keeping Russo and using him sporadically, like when Rodriguez needs a DH day.

  67. Yankz27 May 22nd, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Pelfrey is a sinkerball pitcher with a nice split finger. Girardi probably hopes Winn can bat lefty and elevate his sinker into right field.

  68. Erin May 22nd, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Ledger_Yankees Hughes just pulled his batting gloves out of a plastic baggie. Look like they’ve never been worn. Oh, the joys of interleague.

  71. Jerkface May 22nd, 2010 at 4:36 pm

According to this BAyern Munich has had time of possession 70%. And they are losing 2 – 0 , way to let your opponent make the most of their 30%

  72. Andrew May 22nd, 2010 at 4:36 pm

Joe I was at a World Cup game in 1994 at Giants Stadium (Morocco/Saudi Arabia, not exactly a marquee matchup but it’s still the World Cup). It was one of the most amazing sports experiences I’ve been through. SO much energy in the building, it was packed, super entertaining. And I was only a kid at the time. Hope the US wins the bid for the WC for either 2018 or 2022, it would be amazing to go again

  73. Superman May 22nd, 2010 at 4:37 pm

The thing is that Pena is probably a better hitter than Winn.

Either way you look at it, Winn is the odd man out.

If they want to maximize our assets and chances to winn, he needs to go.

  74. Erin May 22nd, 2010 at 4:37 pm

I really don’t see them sending Pena down. Russo can’t play SS, which won’t work out too well when Jeter needs a day off.

  75. Andrew May 22nd, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Jerkface they had the least intimidating 70% of possession imaginable. Inter is unreal defensively in their own end. They eat up crosses and neutralized every Bayern chance, plus their counterattack just destroyed Bayern’s biggest weakness, the central defense.

  76. Macfan May 22nd, 2010 at 4:38 pm

    “# Jerkface May 22nd, 2010 at 4:32 pm

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++

Have we watched Winn in the outfield, can anyone recall him making any catches to rob base hits or diving and making any terrific catches or closing on any ball in the gaps.

All I see of him on defense is the balls that are hit either fall in front of him or over his head, if they are not right at him. His range looks horrible, not to mention he runs out there looking like “buffalo butt” taking forever to get to balls.

I see no redeeming quality in Randy Winn on this ballclub.

  77. Nick in SF May 22nd, 2010 at 4:39 pm

CR9n are you back to using bad language and troubling imagery? :(

  78. Andrew May 22nd, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Erin Russo has played SS he is just not at all the shortstop that Pena is. It depends on what they are looking for, because if they are looking to have a hitter in the lineup on the days when they rest guys like Rodriguez, Jeter, etc. then Russo is the guy to keep. If they are adamant on DHing Jeter semi-frequently and don’t care about offense out of the replacement, then they will keep Pena.

  79. Joe from Long Island May 22nd, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Pat M – Thanks for the insight into Derek’s hitting woes. While it’s one thing for the fan to have faith, it’s another to have some insight. It may just be me, but it seems like his bat speed is ok, just not connecting consistently – that is, a slump. If that’s all it is, then I have to believe he will come out of it.

As for Tex, he does seem to fall victim to outside breaking stuff when he hits lefty. And when he does try to drive it, he just misses. It must be part mental at this point, also. Maybe a full day off will help. I know he’s going to hit, just wish he’s do it already….

  80. Blank Check May 22nd, 2010 at 4:40 pm

I think we all keep waiting for Teixeira to come alive the guy is in his prime and slugging .387,

to give you an idea Brett Gardner is slugging .399.

Yes folks Brett Gardner has a higher Slugging and OPS than Mark Teixeira, that makes 0 sense in the long run.

No way that Teixeira will not get brutally hot and when he does teams will burn big time. Mark my words.

It appears to me that Jeter is not seeing the ball well. Maybe spectacles are needed?? I know in my case it seemed like one day I could see like a hawk and the next day I was Mr. Magoo. It could also be that he’s nicked up, and we just don’t know about it. It wouldn’t be the first time. Whatever the issue, I have no doubt he will figure it out

David Wright…wow, when has such a quality hitter gone South so quickly? By now, it’s obvious it goes back to the direct hit to the helmet.

he was averaging 1 K per 4.05 ABs

    since 1 K per 2.79 ABs

    sometimes, correlation does equal causation.

    CR9 just doesn’t like Bayern..or Germans.And I must say he has a point..

I like Randy Winn and all, he’s a nice guy, but can he still catch up to a ML fastball?

If the answer is no, then sit him and give someone else a chance, especially one of your rookies.

If the answer is yes, then you’ve been watching different games than I.

  90. PittsburghYankeeFan May 22nd, 2010 at 5:08 pm

I would also agree with some of the posters above that Randy Winn has been a defensive liability, and his “defense” cost at least one game.

Again, right now I would not DFA him with all of the injuries, but I’m pretty close when there are guys on the 40 man who can do the job probably as well and who deserve a look.

i didn’t use those other numbers because they didn’t fit my point ( or my joke) :)

I just didn’t want anyone running the risk of taking you seriously :x

    Owh and CR9

Man u just offered 23 mil for van der Vaart…

  93. uber scuffler May 22nd, 2010 at 5:09 pm

Hey CR9….what is scummy about the german team? I watched a lot of the world cup 4 years ago, and the germans seemed to be one of the more professional and classy teams. I am not watching today, what am I missing?

So, who’s going to get Roy Oswalt?

apparently, his list of preferred destinations includes St. Louis, Texas and Atlanta

Bayern’s central defense was abysmal. Inter’s chances on the counter weren’t even of particularly good quality and they still scored. Well done by Milito. Demichelis and van Buyten were terrible, however.

Inter is a very good squad. They keep their shape extraordinarily well and play the negative game with technical precision yet at the same time have a talented front four and are effective on the counter.

Still difficult to fathom how Milito barely made the world cub team and Cambiasso will be at home. Maradona looks to be taking the country with perhaps the most talent into a possible train wreck.

Did you finish your book already?

  99. z May 22nd, 2010 at 5:22 pm

Does anyone have the over/under on the # of times Michael Kay uses ‘betwixt and between’ tonight?

  100. Chris May 22nd, 2010 at 5:23 pm

Borden continues to scoff at this point and spout the Yankee party line, but Tex’s night game numbers are a nightmare: .128/.274/.202. I don’t care how great Borden says the Yanks’ medical staff is, and how thorough the preseason medical exam is, Tex simply isn’t seeing the ball at night. And until the Yanks come to grips with this, I don’t see much hope for his improvement.

    Doesn’t betwixt mean between?

  102. CB May 22nd, 2010 at 5:34 pm

    Roger-

Haven’t finished it yet. But it is very interesting. The central point of the book seems to be this:

Due to the low lying nature of Holland (recurrent flooding, etc), the Dutch have long needed to think very carefully about the nature of space and how space can be arranged. Nearly everyday, the Dutch have to think about how to shape space in a way most people don’t. In turn, this was what set the conditions for the development of totaalvoetball, which itself was largely about shaping space on the pitch. The author argues that totallvoetball has relationships to other movements going on in Holland at the time such as in architecture. He’s saying that many of these things were influenced by the Dutch sense and focus on space.

One of the consequences of focusing on space is that you wind up thinking about the relationship between parts rather than about the parts as individual components. So for Michels and Cruyff at AJAX what really mattered as space on the pitch and the interrelationship between the players rather than the players as isolated components.

In a sense he’s talking about the idea of Dutch soccer rather than the soccer itself.

It’s an interesting argument. Obviously it’s impossible to summarize a complex culture with a long history to a theory about space (and soccer books often try to read too much into culture…) but the book makes at least an interesting point.

Does this sound plausible to you in the least? If you ever have the inclination to read it, let me know what you think.
