Vazquez: Too early to tell

Posted by: Rick Carpiniello - Posted in Misc on May 22, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Some quick pregame stuff: Joe Girardi said Javy Vazquez’s index finger wasn’t too bad today, still swollen, but that there won’t be any indication on the severity of the injury until he throws his bullpen session … or until they see if he can grip the baseball. Trainers are working on getting the swelling down now …

Alfredo Aceves, on the DL with a back injury, will go to Tampa Monday to begin throwing. …

Marcus Thames was available last night, and should be available again tonight, as a pinch-hitter. But Girardi said he’d be careful with him. “Even if he hit I might pinch-run for him,” the manager said.

CC Sabathia, tomorrow’s starter, said he’s started bunches of games against Johan Santana. But this will be his first opportunity to bat against Santana. The big guy said he’s “excited” about it … then added that he doesn’t know how excited he’ll be when it’s over.

Mets lineup:
Reyes SS
Castillo 2B
Bay LF
Davis 1B
Wright 3B
Pagan CF
Barajas C
Francoeur RF
Pelfrey P

    Thank you, Rick Carpiniello.

A HR against Johan while pitching a shutout would be you know who big.

Is there anyone who would rather have Johan over having Phil and CC?

  3. CB May 22nd, 2010 at 5:35 pm

    Roger-

I answered your question in the last thread.

C lineup for the Sox today.

Sitting Youkilis so Ortiz doesn’t throw another hissy fit.

Luckily for them, they have a huge cushion in the East and winning tonights game isn’t that important. (obligatory ‘wait, what?’)

Now watch, they’ll score 20 runs.

i saw that Z, if Lowell doesnt get burn soon, he’s gonna turn Fenway into a car wash.

  8. Chris May 22nd, 2010 at 5:45 pm

The Yanks have big holes at #3 and # 8 today. But the hole at #3 as been there from day one and is doing nothing but getting bigger. As to Hughes as a batter, who knows? As a pitcher against the Mets, I’m not worried.

  9. z May 22nd, 2010 at 5:49 pm

Great Pearl Jam show last night.

    —————–

I’ll always respect Pearl Jam’s live show. I saw them in ’92 in Saratoga. The show was in an ampitheater. A storm came through and knocked out power to about half their equipment.

They kept playing (sort of an unplugged set, before ‘Unplugged’.)

    It was a great set.

Hell of a show, too. No one was complaining about this lineup:

    Soundgarden
    Pearl Jam
    Ministry
    Red Hot Chili Peppers

I have to think that the Yankees are aware of all the splits for all their players. I’m referring to Tex’ apparent “night blindness.”

    What was it last season?

There are a preponderance of night games in baseball. I would think if it was really a problem, it would have showed (shown?) up before.

It’s more than likely just one of those freaky stats. You knw you can find a stat for anything. What’s his BA, etc., on days when he has chinese food for supper? When he gets his hair cut? Forgets to kiss his wife goodbye? You know?

I’m making light of it, because I think he just stinks right now and that it will turn around and the night game thing is an anomaly.

To CB from your comment in the last thread, Maradona is going to be such a hilarious sideshow to the World Cup. His run as the national team coach has been highly entertaining in a “can’t look away from a trainwreck” fashion. He seems almost guaranteed to get the least out of one of the more naturally talented teams in the tournament.

For some reason I’m having trouble getting on this blog and posting.

    pat -

    That was great, thanks. :)

  15. Chris May 22nd, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Doreen, I don’t think it’s “night blindness”. Howver, vision problems often manifest themselves initially with decreased ability to see in darker environments. (By the way, for his career, Tex has done slightly better during the day, but not significantly better.)

  16. pat May 22nd, 2010 at 6:32 pm

Tex reminds me of Abreu in some ways.

The numbers look good at the end of the year and they have some big hits during the season but both seem more comfortable not “being the man” or having to carry a team.

  18. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 22nd, 2010 at 6:36 pm

    Chris -

Oh, I sure know that. “Night Blindness” was an exaggeration, but I’ve had diminished vision in the dark for a long time – meaning, not as sharp.

Hey, it could be something for them to look at. I guess I was just trying to make light of it. :)

  19. pat May 22nd, 2010 at 6:38 pm

“I guess I was just trying to make light of it.”

Light of it. I see what you did there.

Pretend special delivery coming your way.

“Russo hasn’t been given the ball from his first hit yet, but when he does, he’s thinking about giving it to his Mom for safekeeping.

“I’ll probably look at it for a while,” Russo said. “I might keep it at my Mom’s house, let her keep it and show it to people. I’m sure she’d love that.” “

  21. Blank Check May 22nd, 2010 at 6:49 pm

    pat,

That is an excellent comparison. I couldn’t agree more.

  22. mick May 22nd, 2010 at 6:56 pm

JD – Can this team win it all?
PA – I don’t think so. The pitching’s not good enough. Torre was able to push them through their slump last season and once the ball got rolling, it never stopped. I don’t know if Girardi can do that. That seem content to be .500.

    This from Buster Olney blog:

Brent Mayne is not alone in having his thinking shaken by Cervelli. Personally, I love watching him play — he has energy off the charts — but he is already viewed in some other clubhouses as something of a hot dog. “It’s no wonder the Red Sox threw at him,” said one official. “He’ll drive you nuts with the stuff he does.”

  24. Carl May 22nd, 2010 at 7:07 pm

    Lets go Yankees!!!

  26. Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Is there a game thread ?

  27. pat May 22nd, 2010 at 7:12 pm

    Let’s go Yankee bats.

  28. Patrick May 22nd, 2010 at 7:12 pm

I have a feeling that Phil Hughes is going to dominate this Mets team.

  29. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 22nd, 2010 at 7:12 pm

I think I’ll pass on watching this game. Can’t take McCarver and Buck – at all.

    pat -

I really wish I WAS going for something with the “light” comment. Unfortunately, I can’t take credit for being that pithy. :)

Also, what a cute story about Russo and this first hit baseball. :)

    blacked out on mlb.tv

screw you FOX. morons chose to show the phils/sox game during the celtics game and screw everyone.

  31. CB May 22nd, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Hughes is going to have a very good game. The Mets aren’t a patient team and have poor contact skills as a line up.

Many of the pitches that have been fouled off against hughes as he pounds the zone will be either swinging misses or soft contact against the Mets.

  32. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Anybody know where the game can be watched online? I need to know for someone else.

  33. Patrick May 22nd, 2010 at 7:16 pm

“Strike” 2 to Gardner was way outside

  34. LGY May 22nd, 2010 at 7:17 pm

Gardner has been getting killed by the umps on that high and away strike the past 2 nights.

  35. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 7:17 pm

Agreed with Patrick. Gardy got hosed!

  36. LGY May 22nd, 2010 at 7:18 pm

    I should say “strike”

  37. x1 May 22nd, 2010 at 7:18 pm

  38. Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 7:20 pm

Too bad Cano could drive that to the wall.

  39. Tom in N.J. May 22nd, 2010 at 7:20 pm

    Hughes!

    /that is alll

  40. Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 7:20 pm

    couldn’t

  41. Patrick May 22nd, 2010 at 7:21 pm

Why in the heck is there so many night games!? It’s Saturday, we should have all day games. Stupid interleague, stupid fox

  42. Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 7:22 pm

In this ballpark if you hit the ball in the air your beat. Unless you hit it 600 feet of course. Only the Mets would configure a ballpark with these dimensions.

  43. Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 7:23 pm

Hughes should take advantage of the outside, outside corners. From the 1st inning it looks like the ump has a wide strike zone. Just like yesterday.

  44. Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 7:23 pm

    Michelle
I agree. Why make the park like that ? Only the inept Mets organization !

  45. S.A.--Serenity Now May 22nd, 2010 at 7:23 pm

    Let’s go Youse!

  46. Nick in SF May 22nd, 2010 at 7:24 pm

Patrick, it’s because Fox owns Saturday and was broadcasting the Champions League Final.

Or that’s my theory, at least.

  47. BBYanks May 22nd, 2010 at 7:24 pm

Agree that Gardner seems to be getting a lot of called strikes that are outside the zone.

Hopefully he does not expand the strike zone and start chasing those pitches; needs to swing at the 1st or 2nd pitch once in a while to make pitchers think twice about just laying those pitches in there.

  48. Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 7:25 pm

Nice play by Cano to get our friend Castillo

  49. RS May 22nd, 2010 at 7:25 pm

Part of the reason Reyes is struggling is that he has hit an astronomically high number of flyballs and popups.

  50. Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 7:27 pm

The uniform the Mets are wearing tonight is so ugly. It’s like fake pinstripes.

  51. Carl May 22nd, 2010 at 7:27 pm

Why not play a dead pull hitter closer to the line?

  52. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 7:27 pm

That was a strike for the Mets arse hole. Why not for US????????????????????????????????????? COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  53. RS May 22nd, 2010 at 7:27 pm

    Pelfrey got that outside pitch

  54. Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 7:27 pm

    This ump stinks

  55. RS May 22nd, 2010 at 7:28 pm

Twins blew a 4-run ninth inning lead.

  56. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 7:28 pm

    Michelle

It dont work like that. The umpire has a wide strike zone for 1 pitcher and 1 team. The Mets!

  57. Trevor May 22nd, 2010 at 7:29 pm

“The uniform the Mets are wearing tonight is so ugly. It’s like fake pinstripes.”

All 40 of their uniforms are ugly.

  58. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 7:30 pm

    Cheated again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  59. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos May 22nd, 2010 at 7:30 pm

    Weird fingers on Cervelli.

Sure the pitcher can see the signs, but so can everyone else.

    Hey, Phil — what’s up?????

  60. Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 7:30 pm

Where was that ? Why does MLB have so many bad umps ?

  61. Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 7:30 pm

I feel like Hughes gets squeezed often on the outside corner. His last couple of starts at least. He has dealt with it well but his pitch count definitely goes up because of it.

  62. CB May 22nd, 2010 at 7:30 pm

“Why not play a dead pull hitter closer to the line?”

They didn’t think he could pull Hughes’s fastball.

Very few hitters have been able to turn on Hughes’ fastball like Bay just did.

Hughes so far doesn’t have his best fastball. If he did Bay wouldn’t have pulled it like that.

  63. Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Because of this ump Hughes has to throw more pitches.

  64. Nick in SF May 22nd, 2010 at 7:31 pm

I think the goal was to combine the worst elements of Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds.

  65. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 7:32 pm

    Jeremy

It’s not BAD UMPS. It’s BIASED UMPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  66. Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 7:32 pm

Hughes doesn’t have his best fastball and command….yet. Plus the foul balls kill his pitch count.

  67. RS May 22nd, 2010 at 7:32 pm

Ugh, Phil’s command isn’t very good tonight.

  68. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 7:33 pm

    Basically, plain and simply F*****!

Hughes got F***** by this piece of hartnelling carcillo. A Mother Hartnelling piece of trash.

  69. Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 7:33 pm

Getting beat by another meatball cutter. Wright can’t hit anything, unreal…

  70. Jerkface May 22nd, 2010 at 7:33 pm

    I hope Betsy isn’t watching :x

  71. Uncle Ellsworth (KRFC) May 22nd, 2010 at 7:33 pm

No aspic for you this eveing Young Master Phillip

  72. Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 7:33 pm

    CR9
I believe. Pelfrey gets this wide zone but the Yankee pitchers get nothing.

  73. RS May 22nd, 2010 at 7:34 pm

This is ridiculous. The Mets never have 2 out rallies like this.

  74. Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 7:34 pm

    Great bloop hits !

  75. Carl May 22nd, 2010 at 7:34 pm

Broken bat bloop, nothing you can do.

  76. Matt May 22nd, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Beaten again by the cutter. You are throwing 94 mph and he can’t get around on your 4-seamer, why in the world are you even thinking of throwing that pitch? Another dumb pitch sequence and another unnecessary run given up to a struggling offense club.

  77. pat May 22nd, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Wright looked safe but I’ll take it.

  78. Michelle May 22nd, 2010 at 7:35 pm

    His command is not great…

  79. CR9 May 22nd, 2010 at 7:36 pm

  80. Tom in N.J. May 22nd, 2010 at 7:36 pm

    Game post!

  81. RS May 22nd, 2010 at 7:36 pm

The walk to Davis was a killer, as well as throwing that cutter to Wright. With Wright, you either have to pound the ball inside or throw it way on the outside corner. With 2 strikes, that cutter caught too much of the plate.

  82. CB May 22nd, 2010 at 7:37 pm

Hughes has to be better about executing pitches with two strikes.

The scouting report on him throwing so many four seamers and cut fastballs seems to be out. He’s going to need to adjust.

But his curve ball hasn’t been a pitch he’s needed to use much and it hasn’t been real sharp. The change up hasn’t been used much at all.

And some more ground balls would help.

  83. Jeremy May 22nd, 2010 at 7:37 pm

I’m not worried. The Yankees can still win this game but this ump is not helping at all.

  84. Carl May 22nd, 2010 at 7:37 pm

He should not have thrown that cutter to Wright. He couldn’t catch up to the fastball.

  85. Terry from NH May 22nd, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Hughes couldn’t locate his cutter his last outing.. maybe hasn’t corrected it.

  86. PJH May 22nd, 2010 at 9:59 pm

Mark Teixeira has to wake up. He is so lost up there its pathetic. He has not done anything at the plate since last September. When you combine his Postseason ABs with this season’s, he is 45 for 227. That is a .199 batting average. Its really becoming a problem.

  87. Kevin C May 23rd, 2010 at 4:50 pm

It’s early, the yanks did not get going till June of last year
