Setback for Aceves

According to Joe Girardi, Alfredo Aceves was six or seven pitches into a flat ground throwing session in Tampa when he again felt discomfort in his lower back.

Girardi wasn’t sure what’s next for Aceves, but it sounds at least possible that Aceves will come back to New York for more tests.

    Why am I not surprised?

I hope it’s not time for the surgeon.

  5. z May 25th, 2010 at 6:33 pm

Somewhere out there is a reliable middle relief guy who can take Ace’s place.

    Comb the desert!

  6. RSM May 25th, 2010 at 6:34 pm

Sounds like surgery. Look for Ace in September :(

  7. Dylan May 25th, 2010 at 6:36 pm

Maybe the Yankees should take a serious look at Gaudin. I thought he did a pretty good job for us last year. Plus, he could fill in as a starter if we have anymore injuries.

Just what we need more boone logan. cashman shoud be fired!!!!!

  9. AndrewYF May 25th, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Yeah Cashman should be canned for directly causing Aceves’s slipped disc! What kind of GM intentionally injures his players like that????

  10. Counts May 25th, 2010 at 6:41 pm

    Another great move buy Cashman

All of his decisions have turned to dust so far…

Agreed Gaudin had a 3.64 era fo the yanks last year and we got rid of him for a useless nl pitcher like Park. What a terrible move by Cashman.

For what’s it’s worth, you might read some initial reports that Aceves is definitely coming back to New York for more tests. That’s what Girardi initially said, but the Yankees later clarified to say they aren’t sure what the next move is for Aceves.

Yep. When is this guy going to learn that NL relievers can’t pitch in the AL?

This move was almost as bad as thinking Winn had something left in the tank….

Not surprising at all. When you need an epidural shot, and your limit is 6 of them, then you know it was a band-aid approach.

I would make sure of the diagnosis and go with the method with the best success rate. Aceves isn’t going to be much help if he’s on again, off again. Do the right thing for Aceves.

    shocker.
back problems never go away, filly.

    A CALL FOR NOVA!

Didn’t this happen with Marte last year? He wasn’t expected to be out a long time and He was rehabbing off and on all year and they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him, then he sometime in late August he magically got healthy?

  18. Carl May 25th, 2010 at 6:50 pm

Tampa’s closer is doing just fine in the AL.

  19. ac1 May 25th, 2010 at 6:50 pm

how exactly is aceves being hurt a bad move by cashman?

aceves was 10-1 last year. ill take that move anyday.

  20. m May 25th, 2010 at 6:50 pm

Kind of saw some of the comments during the BOS/TB game yesterday. We’re cheering for Boston, right? Or rather against Tampa Bay, right?

  21. MG May 25th, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Here is an interesting comparison for the month of May:
AB R H HR RBI BA
    Mark Teixeira 91 14 25 5 21 .275
    Albert Pujols 78 10 20 1 10 .256

If you are going to sit down Teix I guess Pujols, based on the month of May, should be a permanent bench warmer. Teix was very hot the first half of the month, is in another bad slump now, but will soon break out, probably as early as this series since his combined batting average against Baker and Blackburn is .700 (14-20).

    ‘FULLY’ even

  23. Bret the Hitman May 25th, 2010 at 6:52 pm

One of Cashmans biggest mistakes was passing on Rafael Soriano in the off season.

  24. Carl May 25th, 2010 at 6:55 pm

The game comes on at 8:10? WTH is this?

  25. Lemon May 25th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Soriano was just as lights out in Seattle as he was in Atlanta. The 3 best ERA seasons of his career came in Seattle, actually.

He is also 6 years younger than Park

  26. XLJ May 25th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

If Aceves cant come back for a while. Than Sergio Mitre should take over Aceves role. He has pitched well this year. They need to find another long man that can pitch garbage innings.

  27. Mike May 25th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

MIN is in the central time-zone. 8 for us = 7 for them.

Though tomorrow’s game is at 7 because it is on ESPN, so it starts an hour earlier.

  28. m May 25th, 2010 at 6:57 pm

    lol, Carl.

I, too, was looking forward to baseball (1 pm my time), but alas! I had somehow forgotten that minny’s not in the east!

    wow Justin is smoking.
makes me wonder….Tex is such a professional hitter, so how can he be in this prolonged of a slump?

Aprils notwithstanding, this is may 25th.

    mel,

Guess you’ll be switching back and forth tonight between the Yankees and Lakers.

  32. upstate kate May 25th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Thought this was a timely comment…I had YES on while cooking dinner, it must be a Casey Stengel yankeeography. He said (paraphrasing) sometimes it gets people’s goat when I switch the batting order around, but it doesn’t get my goat!

    M
I am rooting for a split, w/ the Rays taking 2 of 3. Sox have gotten too hot for my comfort

  33. Joe from Long Island May 25th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Hi Kate, I’m just making dinner myself, starting up the grill for some burgers on a warm spring night….

Tough break for Ace. From everything I’ve read, he’s a decent guy, who’s finally living the dream. Back injuries, especially involving intervertebral disks, can be very tricky. Findings on MRIs don’t necessarily correlate to what the patient is experiencing with regards to pain.

Apart from baseball, I really wish him well. He’s a young man, and a bad back can be torture over a lifetime.

Chad – if you’re reading this, please pass on my wishes to him. He’s a good Yankee, and someone I like rooting for.
