Hughes and Cano lead the Yankees past Cleveland

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on May 28, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Phil Hughes put the Yankees in a position to win. Robinson Cano removed all doubt. After Hughes pitched seven strong innings — including five straight strikeouts to start the game — Cano put it out of reach with the third grand slam of his career. The Yankees lineup hadn’t scored more than four runs in six games, but they doubled that number tonight with a convincing 8-2 win against the Indians.

Swish getting hit after Cano’s curtain call was riduiculous.
He breaks the game open, why not tip his hat?
So what if it’s 8-2, it was 4-2 a minute ago.

    grandy was dandy too.

I think everyone on this blog can agree on that. There is nothing worse than an animal abuser! How anyone can hurt such innocent little things is beyond my comprehension.

My 2 big puppies were abused when I got them several years ago. My chihuahua (while not confirmed) I believe was abused as well.

There is no greater joy in life than to take an abused animal and give he/she a great home that they can learn to love life in.

Moeller did a nice job this evening. Seems like the right choice to bring him up and bridge the gap until Jorge returns.

  5. JM May 28th, 2010 at 10:19 pm

One of my kitties was abandoned by the side of a busy highway near my vet’s office. Terrible. Luckily they saw him and brought him inside or he probably would have been hit by a car.

Arod needs to bat 3rd, Cano 4th and Tex 5th. Tex is killing the offense.

  9. mick May 28th, 2010 at 10:21 pm

Keeping Russo was also a good move.
Now they have 2 utility IFers, to caddy for Jete and Arod in blowouts like tonight.
    Plus he plays the OF.
    Kudos.

and some people think the Yanks have bullpen problems

Red Sox lose, Rays lose, Yanks win. A great baseball night!

    CR9 -

I found my second cat (Suey) literally on my front door step. Heard him crying, opened the door and there he was. Probably about 2 months old.

Don’t know where he came from but very happy that he ended up on my front step.

  16. CR9 May 28th, 2010 at 10:24 pm

Thank God. They probably saved his life, you’re right!

  19. JM May 28th, 2010 at 10:27 pm

Cano batting .426 in last 11 games

  20. CR9 May 28th, 2010 at 10:28 pm

    DFA Cano! ;)

  21. Seven May 28th, 2010 at 10:28 pm

Cano doesn’t walk enough to be a great number 3 hitter. He doesn’t hit enough homers to be the cleanup hitter. He is perfect in the number 5 spot protecting A-Rod.

  22. whoever May 28th, 2010 at 10:31 pm

Russo is a nice addition to this team; his versatility gives Girardi options.

Goes in late, plays third, to give Jeter a breather and tomorrow more than likely playing left field giving Gardner a deserved break.

Good move by the team in keeping him up here.

  23. Rich in NJ May 28th, 2010 at 10:32 pm

Hughes’s FB had good late life, particularly early on, he was commanding his cutter well, and he threw his curve more with mixed results, but I would really like to see him throw the change more because it would be a great weapon against LH power hitters.

  24. Phil the Thrill May 28th, 2010 at 10:35 pm

Cano can hit anywhere now. He’s having a monster season. Phil lost his curveball for an inning or so but he battled. He might think about starting more guys off with the curve as the game goes on, when he’s got it.

  25. Carl May 28th, 2010 at 10:37 pm

    Poor Mets

  26. Kozan May 28th, 2010 at 10:38 pm

    another all-star performance for Hughes.

    6-1 2.07 ERA .201 BAA 1.06 WHIP

    Mo-like #s.

  27. Kozan May 28th, 2010 at 10:40 pm

    *2.70 ERA for Phil

  28. whoever May 28th, 2010 at 10:40 pm

Those able to watch the game saw a catch by Trevor Crowe (CF) that should be in the top five defensive plays of the year. Great catch and he is not a Yankee, so it could be.

  29. Rich in NJ May 28th, 2010 at 10:42 pm

btw, Teix’s defense was beyond stellar.

  30. I Collect Brett Gardner Cards May 28th, 2010 at 10:42 pm

admit tho, the pitching has been lights out for NYM

  31. Phil the Thrill May 28th, 2010 at 10:45 pm

Tex really did shine in the field. His two walks were good, too.

Totally agree Rich, it seems we are a bit spoiled with him and just sort of expect it.

Plug Giambi in there tonight and we could of lost 9 – 8.

  33. I Collect Brett Gardner Cards May 28th, 2010 at 10:48 pm

hey! easy on the Giambino! lol

  34. JM May 28th, 2010 at 10:51 pm

Looking forward to seeing CC get back on track tomorrow.

  35. JM May 28th, 2010 at 10:55 pm

Sure, Tex can play better defense than the Giambino. But can he rock a golden thong??

  36. pistol pete May 28th, 2010 at 10:57 pm

Russo was clearly the right choice to keep up, Winn was finished last year, I’ve got no idea what Cashman was doing signing him his numbers last year were awful and his right handed hitting was the worst in the majors. I didn’t get it then, I didn’t think he’d be any good, and I predicted when Grandy came back he’d be dfa’d. Great fa signing, he didn’t get hurt and didn’t make it to Memorial Day.

Cano maturing right in front of us.

Wakefield knocked out in 3.2 innings 9HR all earned, they burned through 5 reliever. Greinke is tomorrow.

But he might hit 2 homers, unlike Tex got nothing offensively.

  41. raymagnetic May 28th, 2010 at 11:09 pm

Grienke is going to lay down for the Sox and then pitch like an Ace when he faces the Yanks. That’s just the way other teams and players lay down for the Sox.

  42. whoever May 28th, 2010 at 11:10 pm

Best of both worlds – Tex playing first and Gambi our DH.

  43. Hman23 May 28th, 2010 at 11:19 pm

Offense coming back to life. A couple bombs. Tex with a hit & taking 2 walks is a good sign he is turing it around. Hughes with another gem.

    Good stuff.

We are in for a great homestand.

Well, I’ve never said that. Why would I even watch their games if I thought they’d never lose? Thanks for attributing thoughts and words to me that I’ve never thought or said!!

    Nite ray!!

  45. Carl May 28th, 2010 at 11:22 pm

GM Brian Cashman sounded at least a silent alarm before the game, calling the Yanks “a team you want to play against right now” because of their recent offensive deficiencies.

Is this an attempt at humour? If so you fail miserably. Even though we may not know who you are, you have to know what we (99% of the posters on this board) think of you. You are exhibiting the intelligence of a slug. Have some self dignity and grow-up. Or go be a loser somewhere else.

Positives: Hughes surprise of the year, Cano MVP candidate, Granderson back changes the lineup, Tex still GG defense due for batting correction, JETER looking more like JETER again, Swisher quietly putting together an excellent season, Brett Gardner still flirting with a breakout season.

  58. Jina May 29th, 2010 at 3:47 am

Oh- Cano should bat 4 !!!!!
He did such a great job this night.
He carried the team this year…..move him to 4.
