Mariners DFA Rule 5 pick Texeira

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jun 01, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Mariners have designated Kanekoa Texeira for assignment. He’s a right-handed reliever out of the Yankees system who was taken by Seattle in the Rule 5 draft. He had a great spring, made the big league roster and was designated to help make room for two new relievers.

Through 16 appearances, Texeira was 0-1 with a 5.30 ERA. He struck out 14 and walked 10 in 18.2 innings.

The Yankees got Texeira in the Nick Swisher trade. He spent last season in Trenton, going 9-6 with a 2.84 ERA in 41 games, six of them starts.

Every team will have a right to claim Texeira off waivers, at which point he’ll retain his Rule 5 status and have to stick on the claiming team’s major league roster. If he clears waivers, the Mariners will have to offer Texeira back to the Yankees, who could then put him in the minor leagues.

Events change rather quickly in this game. It wasn’t too long ago that some Yankee fans were whining about losing this guy.

It starts at 12:30 and you forgot the positions!

  4. Andrew June 1st, 2010 at 11:57 am

Be nice to get him back for the $25k and put him into the Scranton bullpen. He did a real nice job in a notorious pitcher’s league last year, and he could still prove useful–plus at this point it can’t hurt to get one more near-ML level bullpen arm in the system. Although it wouldn’t surprise me if an NL team that has pen issues claimed him and gave him a shot

What do you think of this guys? I’d rather have the Miranda-Thames platton DH than Nick Johnson. I can see Miranda hitting 25-30 homers easily if he played every day

  6. Mark in Tampa June 1st, 2010 at 12:01 pm

    Who needs Joe Mauer?

    Mauer 43 Games .321 BA 25 Runs 2 HR 24 RBIs
    Cervelli 32 Games .320 BA 11 Runs 0 HR 23 RBIs

Obviously they won’t be this close at the end of the year, and I am by no means saying Cervelli is anything but a backup catcher, but I found this rather startling.

  7. Mark in Tampa June 1st, 2010 at 12:03 pm

“I’d rather have the Miranda-Thames platton DH than Nick Johnson.”

No doubt about it. I was advocating Miranda as full time DH before the NJ signing. Adding Thames to cover against tough lefties and I think they easily surpass what Johnson could have brought.

I think Jeter would have an easier time putting up his numbers in 1910 than Honus Wagner would putting up his in 2010. Some will disagree and say that isn’t a fair thing to say but to be honest I don’t think its too difficult to imagine that being true.

Mauer not taking to Target Field early on?

I do not understand why teams building new fields feel the need to make it so no homeruns can be hit. Citi and Target? Hurts their star players. I’m not saying each field should have a RF like NYY, or left like Fenway, but should be reasonable.

    From previous thread…

    blake,

People always say that a player from the early 20th century wouldn’t succeed in today’s game. How can you know that? Given today’s modern training methods how do you know a player from that era couldn’t flourish today? You don’t.

It’s just supposition. That’s why you have to look at how a player dominated the era in which he played. And Honus Wagner is the greatest shortstop who ever lived. Bar none. It’s not a debate.

Nothing wrong coming in No. 2 behind Wagner.

  12. trisha - #28 is on its way!!! June 1st, 2010 at 12:10 pm

Erin, I had to smile when you said you were looking forward to your birthday. I don’t remember the last time I looked forward to mine! But I do remember loving it when I was in elementary school because the teacher always announced it to the entire class and you were kind of a big shot for the day. I always got to wear a special outfit on that day.

The one that really stands out in my mind was my 12th birthday and my blue corduroy outfit. We had a huge snowstorm that day (winter birthday) and school was called off. It was probably the only day in my life that I was bummed that we had no school.

  13. blake June 1st, 2010 at 12:10 pm

    Rconn,
This is a difficult thing to debate because you’re right we don’t know…I guess the question is..do you think Honus Wagner’s numbers would be possible in todays game?

If not, then we are comparing Jeter’s numbers to some theoretical standard that can’t even happen in today’s game. Modern players are always at a disadvantage in these debates because of that fact.

  14. Mark in Tampa June 1st, 2010 at 12:14 pm

I look at it this way:

Jim Kaat’s career overlapped Warren Spahn and ran right up to Roger Clemens. So he was capable of getting out the same hitters as the greats of the 40′s and the great of the 80′s to today. Likewise, the same hitters that got hits off of Jim Kaat were capable of getting hits off of Clemens and Spahn.

For all that has changed, the players that are great now, would have been great then, and vice-versa.

  15. ac1 June 1st, 2010 at 12:15 pm

im told #dbacks are considering “anything” now (including even trading haren). but deal for dan remains a major long shot

    ___

They have anything we can use?

  16. blake June 1st, 2010 at 12:15 pm

By the same token, if Wagner would have reaped the benefits of Modern technology and been just as productive in today’s game because of it…how do we know Jeter wouldn’t hit .500 every year if dropped in 1910?…we don’t, there is no way to compre the players and no way to definatively say Honus Wagner was a better player than Derek Jeter..

  17. rconn23 June 1st, 2010 at 12:19 pm

    blake,

The thing is though, Wagner’s numbers aren’t so astounding. He played in the dead-ball era. He hit 10 home runs, and only once. Strangely enough, he was also second in the league that year:)

He led the league in the AL in OPS + six times though. His WAR led the league seven times. He was always among the league leaders in triples, doubles, and stolen bases. He finished in the top 10 in all those categories for his career. He was just an absolute machine.

  18. Billy D June 1st, 2010 at 12:21 pm

“They have anything we can use?”

Justin Upton…..but he won’t be dealt.

Plus he’s having a tough 1st couple months this year. Neck and neck with his teammate Mark Reynolds in the battle for strikeout king of baseball.

Could someone please explain to me how GTLU works?

If this question is legit, allow me to help.
GTLU is just a game that is played here that allows us to pass the time and play psuedo manager for the day.
So give it your best shot. Try to write down the same line-up that Girardi will use in the game tonight. Player/Position
Someone here organizes GTLU, keeps track of all the guesses for the day and eventually announces the winner.

  20. Erin June 1st, 2010 at 12:22 pm

trisha-I am getting closer to the point where I won’t look forward to them quite as much. lol School was always out when my birthday rolled around, but I do remember getting a “half birthday” certificate every December 16th in grade school.

  21. Mark in Tampa June 1st, 2010 at 12:23 pm

    blake-

Why wouldn’t Wagner’s numbers be possible?
He scored 100 runs 7 times. Arod and Jeter have both done better than that.

He never hit more than 10 HR in a season, that would certainly be higher today.

He had 9 100 RBI seasons. Arod would have bested that if he stayed at short.

He had a .328 lifetime avg, same as Wade Boggs. I think most would agree that Wagner was a much better player than Boggs, so why couldn’t he do that today?

723 steals, probably not. The game isn’t much played that way today, and there is no record of his CS. If his success rate wasn’t great, he wouldn’t be allowed to run as much today.

He never had more than 45 doubles in a season, which is routinely reeached by many today.

Wagner was an all-time great who played for a very long time(21years), but he never put up unthinkable single season numbers that couldn’t be reached in today’s game.

  22. Andrew June 1st, 2010 at 12:23 pm

One thing Arizona doesn’t have at all is anyone useful out in their bullpen, so they don’t make sense as a RP trade partner for the Yankees. Their outfield has struggled all year and they won’t trade Reynolds or Upton so I don’t see many pieces the Yankees could use.

  23. blake June 1st, 2010 at 12:25 pm

    Rconn,
I’m just argueing the difficulty of comparing a pre-Ruth player to a post-Ruth player…much less trying to compare players a century apart. Its impossible to know who was better IMO. Its easy to just look at numbers and say this guy was better than that guy but to me it boils down to more than that if you really are after the true answer to the “who was better” question.

that’s the beauty though…we’ll never know and it will be debated forever…if it wasn’t it would be boring.

  24. Billy D June 1st, 2010 at 12:26 pm

    ac1:

Now that I think about it, one guy who the D’backs have they might be helpful to the Yankees, and will actually be available, is Adam LaRoche. Pretty solid lefthand bat with pop. If things don’t work out with the Thames/Miranda duo, he could be a guy they can probably get somewhat cheaply. Has a mutual option for 2011 and it gets bumped up by $2M if he’s traded. Would need to know more about that, but he’s a guy they could potentially use.

  25. blake June 1st, 2010 at 12:28 pm

    Mark,
Then why is Wagner automatically considered the best ever?

  26. Billy D June 1st, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Boy the last comment ,in the previous thread gives a detailed history of how teams have paid dearly for walking Tex to get to Arod. When will they catch on?

Mariners are in last place in their division for a reason .Lee missed a lot time hurt from the start, coupled with bad pitching.

Honus Wagner was the A-Rod of his time:

“For some time after “Hans” Wagner’s poor showing in the world’s series of 1903… it was reported that he was “yellow” (poor in the clutch). ”

  40. blake June 1st, 2010 at 12:41 pm

    Rconn, Mark,

Good points and for all I know you may be right. If you’re making a list of greatest SS’s of all time then you have to put Wagner #1 because that’s what the numbers say and because none of us saw him play (at least I think not), that’s all we have to go on. All I’m saying is that there is no real way to accurately compare players that played that far apart and know who was actually better.

  41. rconn23 June 1st, 2010 at 12:42 pm

    blake,

I agree it’s certainly difficult to compare eras.

What we’re left with then are the numbers. And baseball, more than any other game is about the numbers.

It’s about how you played relative to the competition in your era. And Honus Wagner simply blew the competition out of the water. He dominated his era in a way Jeter never has.

That’s the only way we can judge players. It really is. Wagner is the man. He’s an inner circle Hall of Famer. Almost all baseball historians agree with that.

Anything else about how Player A would fare pre or post integration, in certain ballparks, in the dead ball or live ball eras, etc. are just supposition.

This is not a knock on Jeter, who is no doubt one of the greatest of all time at his position – I’d put him No. 4 behind Wagner, A-Rod and Arky Vaughan – but he’s not the greatest.

It seems to me there is no way we can accurately determine players of 80 or more years ago with today’s players. We have no idea whether the competition and pitching were on a par with today’s players. Therefore, IMO, you have to have a break off point between players of yesterday with the player of today. I don’t think this is even an argument that can be fairly judged.

On the other topic, I think it’s fairly easy to compare athletes from adjacent eras… but once you skip an era it’s almost impossible because you no longer have players who competed against both.

  64. Frank G June 1st, 2010 at 3:17 pm

JGS. First time with Texeira. You might be thinking of Nova, who the Mariners took last year. Nobody will claim him if they have to keep him on the 25-man roster, as required. He’s coming back to the Yankees.
