Indians Yankees BaseballTuesday
RHP Phil Hughes (7-1, 2.54)
vs.
RHP Kevin Millwood (0-6, 4.29)
7:05 p.m., MY9

Wednesday
LHP CC Sabathia (5-3 4.14)
vs.
RHP Chris Tillman (0-1, 7.71)
7:05 p.m., YES Network

Thursday
RHP A.J. Burnett (6-3, 3.72)
vs.
RHP Jeremy Guthrie (3-6, 3.71)
7:05 p.m., YES Network

Chris Tillman came to the Orioles in the same trade that brought Adam Jones from Seattle. This was back when Erik Bedard, who went to Seattle, was considered one of the great young pitchers in the game. Tillman was called up from Triple-A late last month and has made just two big league starts this season. In his most recent start, Friday against the Red Sox, he got only four outs.

The O’s had a win against Boston so now it’s Ok if we sweep them.

They’ve had their allocation of wins for the Month.

No reason feel sympathy for their plight. :)

I believe I read that this is the first time Phil will be facing the same team back to back, so this will be a test for him. Will he need to change his pitching pattern? This might be a good game to break out the change………throw the O’s off a bit.

As I was driving to work this morning, the following thought occured to me-

Life would be so much better if I was driving to Baltimore to see the Yankees instead

    You really should!

  9. upstate kate June 7th, 2010 at 11:13 am

yes, you should go Rishi, as bad as the Os are playing, I bet you could get tix easily.

I was hoping we wouldn’t have to face Guthrie…someone always ends up getting hurt.

  10. Rishi June 7th, 2010 at 11:14 am

We have a work trip to the Blue Rocks (Royals affiliate) this week too…i’m checking the website now

MTU, Camden Yards has given Phil fits, so we’ll see….. :)

  12. ac1 June 7th, 2010 at 11:14 am

I was thinking the same thing about the O’s. I was concerned if Boston swept them, they would be due for a win against the Yankees. Now i feel confident they can go at least 3 more games without winning.

  13. ac1 June 7th, 2010 at 11:15 am

I think if Guthrie hits one more person in that game, Burnett will go headhunting.

MTU – I was thinking the same thing, the O’s got their win for Juan Samuel yesterday against Boston, it’s ok for them to go back to thinking about their off season. :)

By the way, I tried plenty of garlic (in my cooking) the other day. No good, the trolls still came around.

“I have a decision to make about that.”

Think long and hard about having twins just to keep Killer happy.

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

Pat, that’s not even funny as a joke. LMAO.

    Joe-

“By the way, I tried plenty of garlic (in my cooking) the other day. No good, the trolls still came around.”

Yeah. Sometimes the Garlic by itself is insufficient (still tastes good though).

Next time load up with Silver and have a Cross handy.

    That should work. ;)

  19. Joe from Long Island June 7th, 2010 at 11:22 am

Will do, MTU – garlic, silver bullets, and Cross.

If nothing else, all this garlic should do wonders for keeping my coronary arteries clean :)

upstate kate June 7th, 2010 at 11:02 am
that is a tough decision GB. Would your granddaughter take Killer full time? And would you still get to see him often? That is so sweet that he has such a bond w/ the twins.

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

Kate, she’d take him in a heartbeat. she was crying as she was leaving. “Killer” had to be put in the house when she left because he kept chasing after the car. It’s the oddest thing about him and those kids. I could understand it more if he were a female dog. You read about it often. Male dogs may love kids, but, not to that extent. He still sleeps with them in the playpen. One on each side. Morgan gave up on trying to stop it. She said the dog would whine and the kids would cry.

All I saw was that you’d buy tickets. No qualifier came through to me.

  23. Rishi June 7th, 2010 at 11:33 am

so tickets in Baltimore are CRAZY cheap – need to see if I can find travel buddies and I’m on my way :)

  29. Haiku-man June 7th, 2010 at 11:43 am

This is rich. All weekend the St Louis sports media bragged on picking up Randy Winn. Today beat writter Bernie Miklasz is lamenting how old the Cardinal bench has gotten , they have 1 player on the bench under 30.

Bernie says the Cardinals traded away good prospects to get Holliday (gutted the farm really) and is concerned (rightly so) about the Cardinals (who are battling for 1st place, with the Reds weekly) handing the bat to older players for younger ones.

Somebody sold the Cardinals a bill of goods, they are under the impression Winn can play all 3 outfield positions! I say Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware,) put him out ther at your own peril! http://www.stltoday.com

    Joe Torre’s My Yankee Years

“Joe is very honest in the book,” the source told Crasnick, “but he doesn’t make any personal attacks. In terms of him name-calling, that’s not his style.”

LOL, he at least called out A-Rod’s name like 10 times, basically he attacked every player except “core 4″ (TM). He took all the credits when the team won, and the blame was ALWAYS on somebody else when they failed.

He didn’t even mention scott practor whose career basically was ruined by Torre.

    Torre sold out his soul.

  34. SJ44 June 7th, 2010 at 11:58 am

It wouldn’t be a thread on here without a doomsday prediction from somebody.

How in the world does this team have the second best record in baseball, lead the league in runs scored and is near the top in several other offensive catagories (including hitting with RISP) if they get shut down by so many pitchers?

At least according to the doomsday crowd.

Does anybody have a recent update on Wang? With all the talk about the Nats bringing up the phenom tomorrow night, I was wondering when/if Wang has begun his rehab for the Nats.

Any info would be much appreciated.

  37. upstate kate June 7th, 2010 at 12:09 pm

gee SJ, I thought it was pretty calm here today…hope you aren’t referring to me worrying about Guthrie hitting one of our guys.

“In the clubhouse, Cecil had a plastic and rhinestone replica of a WWE championship belt slung over his right shoulder, the bling given to him by Ricky Romero, courtesy of Scott Downs.”

Did AJ bring the idea from Toronto or are the Jays a bunch of big old copycats?

  39. SJ44 June 7th, 2010 at 12:15 pm

    Kate,

No. I’m referring the post that has Chris Tillman turning into Cy Young because he’s facing the Yankees.

Wang is still rehabbing his shoulder. He has yet to be cleared to pitch in rehab games.

Last I heard, he was still in Extended ST with the Nats.

  40. Patrick from CT June 7th, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Tough weekend up north. The Jays looked real good and may hang around for a while.
The Yankees should get at least 2 of the next 3, but it’s not going to be that easy. The Os do have their best 2 pitchers going.
I hope they rest A-Rod tomorrow giving him 2 full days off.
Just play .500 on the road and win 2 of 3 at home and we’re in the playoffs.

  41. upstate kate June 7th, 2010 at 12:19 pm

  44. ArodisAwesome June 7th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

We need a sweep against the O’s. I’m going to be rotating between channel 9 tonight and the MLB draft. MLB screwed up the draft for this Bryce Harper kid. What a cheesy planned event. http://sotospeaks.com/2010/06/.....ce-harper/

  45. austinmac June 7th, 2010 at 12:34 pm

I was very surprised that the Jays opted to pitch to Cano over Posada. That was hard to figure since Cano is hitting over .350 and is hot and Posada is still getting his timing. Thank you for letting the pitcher make the decision.

  46. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) June 7th, 2010 at 12:35 pm

Thank you fans for voting Morneau ahead of Tex…..Last time Cano was selected, he was hurt and couldn’t play. I hope it’s different this time; he deserves his chance in the spotlight.

  50. Jerkface June 7th, 2010 at 12:37 pm

    Hellooo

  51. Billy D June 7th, 2010 at 12:37 pm

“How in the world does this team have the second best record in baseball, lead the league in runs scored and is near the top in several other offensive catagories (including hitting with RISP) if they get shut down by so many pitchers?”

Last month or so, there’s been a little bit of a feast or famine quality to the offense. Going back to the back to back hammerings of the Red Sox in Fenway, they’ve played 29 games, 15 of which they scored 4 or less (going 5-10 in those games) and 14 of which they’ve scored 6 or more (10-4 in those). Maybe that’s not all that unusual, but I’ve always thought of these guys as a little more consistent than that.

  52. Jerkface June 7th, 2010 at 12:39 pm

The MLB draft was not changed for Bryce Harper. This started last year because MLB wants to make the baseball draft as big an event as the NFL draft. The sole purpose there is to make money, not glorify some dumb kid.

Its a mistake, because the baseball draft is nothing like the NFL draft, but their reasoning behind it is sound.

  53. Jerkface June 7th, 2010 at 12:40 pm

15 of which they scored 4 or less (going 5-10 in those games) and 14 of which they?ve scored 6 or more (10-4 in those). Maybe that?s not all that unusual, but I?ve always thought of these guys as a little more consistent than that.

Try using a better break point. Scoring 4 runs in MLB is an accomplishment and a sign of a good offense.
If the offense scores 4 or more times almost every game, thats a good offense.

  54. Billy D June 7th, 2010 at 12:40 pm

“I was very surprised that the Jays opted to pitch to Cano over Posada.”

That 8th inning isn’t going to end up in Cito’s “Cool Managerial Moments” scrapbook. Might of been quick with the hook on Morrow, ignored history and walked a struggling Teixeira in favor of pitching to Arod (we’ll give him half credit since Arod made an out), and pitching to Cano over Posada.

  55. Tom in N.J. June 7th, 2010 at 12:41 pm

What would it take to get Matt Thornton?

  56. Jerkface June 7th, 2010 at 12:43 pm

What would it take to get Matt Thornton?

He is an A+ reliever who has a 3 million dollar option for 2011 and will be a FA after that. Maybe we can get Konerko + Thornton for Miranda (I don’t know the white sox 1b situation in the minors) + prospects. I don’t think romine needs to enter the equation at all.

  57. Dallas Braden June 7th, 2010 at 12:43 pm

No reason to not sweep this sorry ass team.

  59. Patrick June 7th, 2010 at 12:45 pm

Blah I don’t want Konerko. Just Thornton thank you.

  60. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) June 7th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Maybe it’s a good offense, but the Yankees have major problems with RISP; it’s going to come back and bite them against good teams with good pitching when they don’t take advantage of those scoring opportunities.

  61. Billy D June 7th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

“Scoring 4 runs in MLB is an accomplishment and a sign of a good offense.
If the offense scores 4 or more times almost every game, thats a good offense”

Really? League average is 4.54 runs per game, and only Baltimore and Seattle don’t average as many as 4 runs per game. Half the league averages 4.7 runs or better.

FWIW, only three of 15 games with 4 or fewer runs actually featured 4 runs, and they lost 2 of those.

  62. pat June 7th, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Arodisawesome and Jeters#1 know each other I presume?

Trying to pimp a blog covertly on another blog is tacky.

If you ask Chad nicely, he may include you on the fan blog list so you can stop doing it here.

This Sotospeaks guy is a troll and should be banned. He keeps posting the same links over and over, under different screen names.

  64. Billy D June 7th, 2010 at 12:49 pm

“What would it take to get Matt Thornton?”

Quite a bit I’d imagine. Don’t see the White Sox moving him unless it’s in a deal where they feel they are almost screwing the other team over.

  65. upstate kate June 7th, 2010 at 12:52 pm

    oh Jerkface, master of stats
how do the Yankees compare in terms of RISP?

  66. RS June 7th, 2010 at 12:53 pm

Well, the White Sox did trade us Swisher for Wilson Betemit. So maybe they’ll give us Thornton for Kevin Russo.

  67. Billy D June 7th, 2010 at 12:55 pm

“Well, the White Sox did trade us Swisher for Wilson Betemit. So maybe they’ll give us Thornton for Kevin Russo.”

Ozzie really didn’t care for Swisher. Think that went a long way towards that bit of trade stupidity. They love Thornton.

  68. Jerkface June 7th, 2010 at 12:55 pm

Really? League average is 4.54 runs per game, and only Baltimore and Seattle don?t average as many as 4 runs per game. Half the league averages 4.7 runs or better.

Yea but its an average. you’re not going to have a 5 or 6 run average by scoring 5 or more runs every night. Teams are going to have ups and downs, and scoring 4 runs consistently is a sign of a good offense. Those teams averaging 4.5 are scoring less than 4 quite a bit.

  69. Don June 7th, 2010 at 12:56 pm

I feel sympathy for the Os (though I am a Yankee fan). I hope we take two out of three.

  71. Jerkface June 7th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

The yankees dropping an extra game against toronto means they have to go 5-1 vs the O’s and Stros the next 6 games to satisfy my ’12-4′ goal for this 16 game stretch.

I hope they can do it!

That would put them 17 games over .500 !

  72. Patrick June 7th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I was just looking at Thornton’s numbers and he’s pretty dominant. His numbers are obviously great – 2.10 ERA, 12.62 K/9, 1.12 FIP, has given up 0 HR and only 6 BB in 25.2 innings.

The greatest part about him though is how he does it. He has an insanely dominant fastball. He throws it 91.4 % of the time and it averages almost 96 MPH.

Oh and he’s a lefty and dominates right-handed hitters too.

The dude is a stud, he would probably cost a lot to get.

  73. SJ44 June 7th, 2010 at 1:01 pm

The Yankees lead the league hitting with RISP.

If they aren’t good at it, neither is anybody else.

Sometimes, we lose sight over some things because all most of us see are Yankee games.

If you watch other teams though, the Yankees offensive issues pale in comparison.

  74. rconn23 June 7th, 2010 at 1:01 pm

Matt Thornton to the Yankees is a pipe dream. They have little incentive to get rid of him.

A more likely trade target, and a good one at that, would be J.J. Putz.

  75. upstate kate June 7th, 2010 at 1:03 pm

    thanks Tom
no surprise that Baltimore is at the bottom, but AZ at the top is strange to say the least. Must be they don’t have many base runners, but those that do get on, they score.

  76. Jerkface June 7th, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Matt Thornton to the Yankees is a pipe dream. They have little incentive to get rid of him.

He is going to be a FA in a year and will make 3 mil next year, its not like he is a young stud under their control.

  77. SJ44 June 7th, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Going into the Toronto series, they lead the league hitting with RISP.

It’s why I’m not worried about that part of their game.

Every team has a few games where they scuffle in that area.

Matt Thornton ain’t comin’ here until the Yankees pony up something strong.

He’s probably Kenny Williams best trade chip.

It won’t be a Swisher-Betemit type of deal.

  78. Haiku-man June 7th, 2010 at 1:06 pm

I’ll bet the CWS would do l better with Ozzie going, rather than dismantling the whole team. The way he speaks to them has to affect team’s morale and production. He really is an emotional hot head, mucho caliente!!

  79. Tom in N.J. June 7th, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Thorton’s going to be 34 in September. And, as Jerkface pointed out, he has a 3 million dollar option for next season. If the White Sox are in a rebuilding mode, why hold on to a 34 year old set up man who can be a FA after next year? He doesn’t seem to have any long term future with the team. It would make sense for the CHISOX to get somthing for him now, no?

  80. vblade June 7th, 2010 at 1:09 pm

Putz would be significantly cheaper than Thornton. No need to give up decent prospects to a team desperate to unload its roster.

  81. xyz June 7th, 2010 at 1:10 pm

Keith Law’s writeup for Yanks’ possible draft targets:

    “32. New York Yankees

Tyrell Jenkins, RHP, Henderson (Tex.) HS

Also hearing Drew Vettleson and Ryan LaMarre.

    Tyrell Jenkins
RHP | Henderson (Tex.) High School
    Weight: 175 lbs.
    Height: 6-4

A three-sport athlete, Jenkins is committed to Baylor to pitch and play quarterback (albeit likely as a backup behind Robert Griffin for a year), but his pro future is now as a right-handed pitcher.

He’s very crude, but has arm strength and is, of course, a tremendous athlete, so there’s great raw material here. Jenkins has hit 96 several times this spring but will pitch around 89-92, although with some delivery cleanup he should be working at 92-94 or better; when he gets on top of the pitch he gets excellent downhill plane. He’ll show a low-70s curveball and a slider around 80. His delivery is unrefined; his stride length and landing vary from pitch to pitch and he separates his hands very low, but his arm is loose and he keeps his elbow down.

Taking Jenkins is a bet on athleticism and velocity, but because his arm works well he’s well worth that gamble.”

Apologies if this has already been posted.

SJ, that’s very surprising to me. There have been so many games where they seemingly have had multiple runners on and have either failed to score or just scored one. It just seems like they can never get the runner home from 3rd with less than 2 outs……Now, it’s true other teams may be having the same problems and I don’t notice it because I’m not following them.

Putz didn’t do so great when he was with the Mets – pass

RISP lists are fluid from year to year for teams and even more so when dealing with individual players.

Guys who hit with RISP one year are labeled as “clutch”, but in many cases those numbers drop off the next year. Then, well, they can’t hit in the “clutch.”

A-Rod was supposedly a choking dog with RISP in 2008 and 2009, yet he had a plus .400 OBP in those situations despite hitting below .300 in those situations.

Now, he’s “clutch” and a “true Yankee” because people are under the delusion that he didn’t do well in those situations.

Yet more proof that there is no clutch gene, just like there is no “loser” gene.

  86. SJ44 June 7th, 2010 at 1:12 pm

I don’t think they have a problem trading Thornton.

He’s just going to command a higher than normal cost for a relief pitcher on the trade market.

You are probably looking at a Nunez, Phelps, McAllister (who is on the DL), Nova, or a combination of these guys, level of prospect(s) to get in the talks.

  87. Jerkface June 7th, 2010 at 1:13 pm

SJ, that?s very surprising to me. There have been so many games where they seemingly have had multiple runners on and have either failed to score or just scored one.

Thats the problem with having so many base runners. Can’t score them all :(

  88. gfd June 7th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

I’ll bet they (CWS) would take Joba and prospects for him, because he’s young and they think they could turn him around! imo

  89. Jerkface June 7th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

McAllister (who is on the DL),

I heard it was only for 1 start, so hopefully that doesn’t become a problem in any trade talks forthcoming.

Very excited to see what Cashman does on the deadline this year. The yankees have opportunity to really boost the club and get over the top against the sox/rays.

  90. vblade June 7th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

If we’re dealing prospects of a Nova/Phelps/Nunez level for an impact reliever, I’d rather go chasing after Joakim Soria, not Thornton tbh.

  91. rconn23 June 7th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

    Betsy,

Who cares what Putz did with the Mets. He was coming off surgery.

Putz is throwing well now. His numbers aren’t that far off from Thonton. He’s averaging over a strikeout per inning and has excellent control. WHIP under 1.00

  92. SJ44 June 7th, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Putz pitched injured with the Mets.

When he was healthy in Seattle, he was very good.

He would cost a lot less than Thornton and is throwing the ball well this year.

I would take a shot at Putz if the price was right.

  93. xyz June 7th, 2010 at 1:17 pm

Two good signs from this past w/e:

CHoP, and to a lesser extent Marte, pitched well.

I’m not declaring them both reliable in high leverage situations at this point, but the fact that both looked healthy and were throwing basically their “A” stuff is a very good sign.

  94. Joe from Long Island June 7th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Betsy – Putz had arm – elbow? – problems with the Mets; in fact, they told him to pitch through i and not say anything (typical Mets). He finally called it and had surgery mid year last year.

  95. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) June 7th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

Wow, if that’s what it takes to get Thornton (not all of them obviously), then no thanks…..

  96. vblade June 7th, 2010 at 1:21 pm

The Mets medical staff has a terrible reputation. If Putz was pitching injured that is a legitimate reason for him flaming out over there.

    The Mets are evil

  98. vblade June 7th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

What about Carlos Marmol of the Cubs? That team isn’t going anywhere this year so they will probably be sellers.

  99. xyz June 7th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Law had previously Luke Jackson as a possible target:

    Luke Jackson
RHP | Calvary Christian, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
    Weight: 190 lbs.
    Height: 6-2

Jackson’s velocity has been creeping up all spring, to the point where he could go on day one in the draft. Jackson, who only began pitching in ninth grade, will hit 96 at times and sit 91-94 in most outings, with late life up in the zone.

While he’s still growing into his frame, his arm works extremely well and he repeats it without trouble. He’ll work to both sides of the plate with his fastball and pairs it with a big curveball with a nearly 12-to-6 break.

He’s committed to the University of Miami, but has expressed interest in pro ball, and his combination of size, present velocity and an easy arm action should be very appealing to clubs in the top two rounds.

We’ll know soon enough. Draft day is here.

  100. SJ44 June 7th, 2010 at 1:24 pm

    Putz this yr::

    19 IP
    15 Hits
    4 BB
    27 K’s
    2.75 ERA

He would be the second best guy after Mo on the Yankees staff with those numbers. I’d take him.

Sorus is a closer, not a setup guy.

Fans think players will agree to a lesser role. Players think otherwise.

The Royals can get a lot more for Soria from teams needing a closer than the Yankees are willing to give up for a setup guy.

Plus, it’s awfully hard to have a guy setup when he is already a great closer. Often, they don’t bring the same intensity to a lesser role.

  101. vblade June 7th, 2010 at 1:26 pm

W/ regards to Soria and Mo, I think Soria would appreciate pitching in high leverage innings in a pennant race, and the knowledge that when Mo hangs it up, that he would be first in line for the closer’s job.

  102. Billy D June 7th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

“What about Carlos Marmol of the Cubs?”

He’s pretty cheap for the Cubs and I believe he isn’t a free agent til after 2013. They have little incentive to move him unless some ridiculous offer came along.

  103. GreenBeret7 June 7th, 2010 at 1:30 pm

The only way to get a pitcher like Thornton at a reasonable price is to take on a bad contract. That would be someone like Rios.

  104. SJ44 June 7th, 2010 at 1:33 pm

That’s how fans think. That’s not how players think.

Closers are a different breed. Especially guys in their prime like Soria.

Mo is the exception. That’s not a long term position, performance-wise.

They make their money closing games. Not setting up for anybody.

If he can get dealt now and close somewhere else, that’s where he is going to get paid.

Its also the way the Royals can extract the most value in return for dealing him.

That’s why expecting the Yankees to dive in and pay what it would take to get him is a longshot.

A guy like Putz, or guys of his elk, is a more likely bullpen target for them than Soria.

    New thread

    It’s draft day!

  106. vblade June 7th, 2010 at 1:33 pm

It seems like the only reasonable targets would be Soria or Putz, based on asking price to gain ratio. Soria has the higher tag but if he has no problem setting up with a closer’s job in sight after a couple of years, he has the most upside.

  107. Sacfly June 7th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

I hope we draft Zach Lee or Nick Castellanos. Prefer Lee.

  108. YanksfaninPA June 7th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

I’ll be there for Thursday’s game. My fourth time seeing the bombers in Baltimore…2-1 in overall 3 games including the Alex Rodriguez return HR game last year! Sitting in 3rd row in section 69
