“Anyone hear that the Marlins are going to use fish tanks as their backstop in their new park?”
    ———————————————————————————-

why does this make me think of Barbershop 2 ?

they meant to say, the Marlins will have a McFish banner, as their backstop in the new ball park.

  2. vblade June 10th, 2010 at 3:40 pm

Argh. Just missed Thames in LF.

    Betsy,

Why do you seem so emotionally invested in Hughes performance?

We are all Yankees fans and hope the players on our team do well, and most fans are more attached to home grown players, but over the past 3 years I would swear you were a family member of Hughes.

Eeeewww @ Thames and Moeller starting tonight.

I started to put Thames in for Russo figuring Joe might want to give him a chance against a good fastball thrower but thought he’d opt for the better glove in the field coming off of Russo’s game saving catch last night…I overthunk just like Joe overmanages at times…

MG, if you had told me that before the season started, I would have had very pleasant dreams. That?s a great point. It?s weird, so he?s 8-1 and it?s like it?s not good enough. How silly is that? I know how much progress he?s made even in starts where he?s not dominating (and as I?ve said, he?s spoiled me ? expecting a 23 year old who is starting consistently for the first time to dominate major league hitters is beyond foolish); take a look at the two Camden Yards starts. Has he kept the team in games? Beyond all measure ? even in the Mets game that I thought he pitched poorly in, it?s not like he got TORCHED, for pete?s sake. I do care a lot about what the ?experts? say, so since I do, I probably should realize that even they don?t analyze every thing a player does to the degree that I?ve been doing with Phil???It?s not like they go, hmm, he had an ok game, so he?s not as good as I thought. Wait, now he had a great game ? he IS as good as I thought. They take the long view, which I should as well.

SJ, thanks for that story ? and I hope that young writer took the advice to heart. I need the perspective so I can enjoy watching this kid develop ? that?s the great fun in watching young players. I wasn?t like this when Jeter, Andy, Jorge and Mo were coming up ? probably because there wasn?t any internet ? I just enjoyed the thrill of seeing them grow into such terrific players and took great pride in them.

Just caught up from last nights chat. Thank you Phil, CB and SJ for your insights into the draft and your comparative analysis of the Yankees and Red Sox operating strategies.

    Correct me if I’m wrong.

As I understand it, the Red Sox leak information in order to control the narrative and win the perception battle, right?

I suspect the reason is because they want to generate a positive buzz about their team in order to strengthen the fan base and build new allegiances among younger fans. Their marketing scheme is designed to constantly make them appear at the cutting edge of baseball fashion. Their trades and drafts and player personnel moves are viewed as fascinating and trendy.

As these energized fans follow the team with high hopes, the bottom line is in theory boosted on the business side of things.

Traffic to Red Sox sights goes up. Internet profits sail.

    Merchandise flies off the shelf.

Fans flock to the stadium because they don’t want to miss a trick.

    Radio revenues soar.

TV revenues follow the same hype.

The reason I think the Red Sox can get away with this empty hype is because of their history. Sure, they remain competitive enough to nurture all the craze that they generated in the first place.

But if their picks bust or plans faulter or trades backfire and they fall short of the wins they seemed to promise in the public eye, the fans forgive and forget because they have been numbed by their historic failures of the past.

It will be interesting to see how the Yankees perform tonight. They have had a tendency to struggle against pitchers they’ve never seen before the last few years. I hope they really give this Baltimore pitcher a great introduction to the league ; )

  12. Patrick from CT June 10th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Moeller may know this kid they are throwing tonight.
Thames needs to get some ABs and Gardy can probably come in for D late in the game.
The lineup is great even without Cisco and Gardy…

  13. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) June 10th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

I?m fine with that. Frankie could use a break – poor kid has to be absolutely exhausted; he?s done more catching and hitting than anyone ever foresaw, and he?s done a tremendous job. Let him relax tonight and enjoy a day off ???.

it seems like it’s been a while since Thames has played though (besides pinch hit apperances). I’m not too surprised he’s starting over Russo.

  16. NYYROC June 10th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

The info you can get on the net is a blessing and a curse. The stats are great but a person can get so caught up in the #s that you “forget to watch the game”. When I was a kid I didn’t know what Bob Gibson’s average FB velocity was. I didn’t know how many pitches Juan Marichal had nor did I know what % of pitches did Guidry throw his slider. I just saw pitchers who got guys out game after game and I knew they were good. Sometimes it’s just better to use the “eyeball test” and watch the games.

  17. Bad Scooter June 10th, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Hilarious. Mad Dog is having a breakdown beacause his beloved SF Giants are blowing this afternoon’s game. “They never win. They’re never going to win. They’re a gutless franchise, etc.”

  18. upstate kate June 10th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

    Bret

interesting analysis on red sox fans. I find there is a huge difference between pre ’04 sox fans such as my sisters and their husbands and post ’04 fans. The pre ’04 fans are always waiting for the worst to happen as they have been disappointed so many times before, the post ’04 fans are smug (or were until last year when the Yankees won the WS again)

I guess the same could be said for the more recent Yankees fans.

  19. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) June 10th, 2010 at 4:01 pm

NYYROC, I agree- that?s why I don?t really pay any attention to those alphabet soup stats (BABIP, WAR, UZR, FIP, etc..); I don?t even know what most of them mean, lol.

The good thing about the internet is that you can follow players/teams even if they are clear across the country. I am a Chicago Bears fan and it?s great that I can go onto message boards, websites, etc.. and get the info I am looking for. Before, though I was a fan, it?s not like I knew anything about them because I didn?t have access to that info ? and they were rarely on tv in our area.

  24. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) June 10th, 2010 at 4:04 pm

I don?t know any Red Sox fans, but Sox fans are as bad sometimes as Yankee fans. One jerk on a message board made a comment about Lester?s cancer returning after he was struggling in April; now obviously that guy is just beyond help, but others (who should know that Lester is a slow starter) were PO?d at the pitcher as well. If you go onto a Sox game thread where they are losing, I suspect it would be the same thing as visiting a Yankee thread while we are losing. They may have a cute reputation with the media and fans in general ,but Sox fans expect to win??just like Yankee fansa.

  36. SJ44 June 10th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

    Bret,

Red Sox ownership is very marketing savvy. They know how to work the “Nation” to maximum profits.

Because of the limitations of Fenway, they have to maximize revenue any way possible.

Its why their narrative is what it is.

It works for them and their fan base eats it up.

Its different with the Yankees. They don’t need to play that game. Its a different vibe, if you know what I mean.

Its two organizations who run their teams in different fashions and are successful in the ways they do it.

The Red Sox couldn’t run their club like the Yankees and vice versa.

That’s why its such a great rivalry.

Did you see the article he linked to earlier about the McCourt’s “spending six figures on some whack-job Rasputin “scientist and healer” figure to “send positive energy over great distances” in an effort to help the Dodgers win games.” I recommend reading the full article, great entertainment.

  45. SJ44 June 10th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Re: the lineup….I like the lineup.

I like Moeller catching AJ. He calls a good game, knows the Orioles well since he caught there last year, and Cervelli could use the rest.

LF in Camden Yards isn’t a tough LF. You have endure Thames to get his bat in the lineup.

Got to give him enough AB’s to keep him fresh.

They have already won the series.

Best time to work a few guys into the lineup is in a house money game.

That’s two great pitchers there. Marichal either threw 6 pitches or 18, depending on how you count them. 2 fastballsl, curve, slider, changeup and a screwball. He threw them all from straight over the top, 3/4 arm and sidearm and they all did different things. The high kicking Dominican was something to watch. It’s a pity that he’s only remembered for one thing, but, because of guys like Koufax, Drysdale, Ford, Carlton, Gibson and later McLain and Seaver, he was almost totally overlooked as one of the dominnant pitchers of his era. Gibson was just plain nasty.

  48. SJ44 June 10th, 2010 at 4:22 pm

    Never said that.

BTW, how is Melky doing in Atlanta. Still want to tell us how he is going to tearup the NL?

  49. CPinDC June 10th, 2010 at 4:52 pm

Hello everyone. I read this blog everyday, sometimes several times a day, if work allows but I seldom comment. After a couple days of Strasburg rest here in DC, I was wondering what you guys thought of the media rollout (local and national). That includes you too, Chad.

Here are my thoughts from the epicenter, so to speak. I think the sports media went over the top as in jumped Mt. Everest! Perhaps because of where I live and I read/watch news almost 24 hours a day; only a few hours related to Yankee sports, but I thought the media/Nationals gave Strasburg no place to go. I’m not saying he isn’t good/great but you literally would have thought he was the second coming! In fact, one fan a the game had a scroll sign that said “Strasburg is our Savior”! Wow! I think the media should have talked about his minor league stats, performance, background, etc. But from Costas to Hazel Mae on MLB Network who said on Quick Pitch Wednesday morning that (paraphrasing here…..”you most have been on planet Pluto if you did not hear about the Strasburg, the greatest rookie in major league baseball to have his debut….”) Again, from what I seen Strasburg seems to be good/great. Granted, I rarely watch any other team play besides the Yankees. Prior to 2006 when the Yanks played the Nationals here in the old RFK stadium, I had not seen a National league game in person for 40 years. Back to my point, other than it’s great for the Nationals, why do you think the media went absolutely crazy in hyping this kid. He is limited to 150 innings this season, they gave him the bases as well as the ball from Tuesday’s game. I do not think the media gave Strasburg enough innings under his belt before they anointed him the second coming. What if he is injured, has a so-so outing? Can the media step back if he does not live up to his outing on Tuesday. What if the Nationals don’t improve their record, will he choose to stay with a team performing subpar? What does the media lovefest for Strasburg say about other rookies?
