I’m glad they finally have a longer homestand this time-it still kind of seems like they’re always on the road. LOL

Betsy, use whatever word you like, but it boils down to this: every day you are on this blog worrying about some aspect of Phil Hughes.

It’s like you are convinced he’s going to fail or be mediocre and everyone on here shows you evidence why that’s a poor conclusion so every day you come in here with a new concern. It’s getting really REALLY old.

  8. Irreverent Discourse June 11th, 2010 at 11:15 am

    win, win, double win.

  9. Patrick from CT June 11th, 2010 at 11:15 am

How about 7 or 8 wins out of 9 this home stand?
Of the 3 teams, the Mets look to be playing the best. Let’s hope the Phillies don’t snap out of their funk!

  10. Hey Kelvin says June 11th, 2010 at 11:15 am

I’m looking at either A-rod to DH or Cano to be the cleanup hitter.

So have that in mind folks for GTLU~

Although I must admit for selfish purposes the one game I really, really want the Yankees to win in that series is on Wednesday. I’m counting on the Yankees winning being their birthday present to me. ;)

Buster Olney twitter, says the split between Ozzie and Ken Williams is so bad, that it almost came
to blows last Tues. Could you imagine Cashman and Joe coming to blows, evah?

Youkliss left the game in the 7th inning because of back spasms, and Pedroia is nursing a knee injury. If they lose them their season is in peril.

Should be interesting to see how much World Cup talk goes on here at LoHud.. seems like it might be the perfect cure for the over analyzing that goes on around here. I realize thats what the blog is for, so I’m not knocking anyone, but having something else to focus on all the way through the All-Star break can’t hurt, right?

the mlb network has been advertising a show about the white sox…not sure what to think about that!

    Damon
not to mention Ellsbury had a set back

  27. Patrick June 11th, 2010 at 11:29 am

When Girardi gets ticked off and yells at an umpire / thrown out of the game he’s legit pretty scary. He has like zero body fat and he’s pretty ripped.

Although the braces kind of ruins the effect..

  28. gfd June 11th, 2010 at 11:30 am

Yeah Joe would drop Cashman like a bad habit!

  29. GreenBeret7 June 11th, 2010 at 11:30 am

I see that people are back to calling for Colin Curtis again. In the 10 games that he’s been back, he’ hitting .140. He also hasn’t hit for power all year. He had 6 doubles before getting hurt. NYY would be better off using Huffman or Winfree, though Huffman is the better outfielder and can play a solid 1st base. Another name that’s been floated was Corona. Corona isn’t even as good of a hitter as Pena is. I’d suggest Nunez, but, he’s terrible on defense at 3rd and 2nd. His play at shortstop has been nearly exceptional this year. There is no 3rd baseman at Scranton to cover Rodriguez if needed. Cusick and Robby Hammock are the only other 3rd base types in Scranton. Hammock plays 6 positions including catcher.

GI Joe does look to be in real good shape but his face is showing the stress he has been under the last 3 years as Yankee manager. He’s only like 44, right?

  33. braeden June 11th, 2010 at 11:39 am

Well if the Yankees for some reason don’t make the playoffs, and this is Joe’s contract year. If he gets the boot, Joe might show Cashman the floor over the Winn, Thames, Johnson, and Gaudin signings!!

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am concerned about A-Rod and that nagging groin injury.
We don’t need to see him on the DL for 15 days. I don’t even want to imagine that.

Hopefully getting the entire weekend off + the scheduled Monday day off will be more than enough to rest the groin and remove all the stiffness.

It is low, it is hard, Goooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaalllllllllll!! The Yanks winnnnnnnnnnnn!! Oh, are they disallowing the goal? We don’t have the best seat to see that corner of the goal from here. Perhaps its time for the 7 minute stretch!

  37. Patrick from CT June 11th, 2010 at 11:51 am

I don’t think you’ll see Alex in the lineup today or tomorrow. Pena plays 3b today against the righty and Russo tomorrow against the lefty. My guess is that the next time we see ARod will be at DH when Georgie gets behind the plate Sunday or Monday…

Why are the Cardinals the only team not playing interleague today?

  39. Billy D June 11th, 2010 at 11:52 am

“Why are the Cardinals the only team not playing interleague today”

16 NL teams and 14 AL Teams

  40. RayVT June 11th, 2010 at 11:54 am

I was wondering if the Yankees might actually be interested in making a trade with the Mariners for Jack Wilson (SS) as a utility guy. He makes $5M and is in his last year contractually. (Note Josh Wilson has looked very good in Jack’s absent 15 day DL.)

Another thought is Ichiro. Could he & his $18M be tradeable too? What are the chances of Lee, Wilson & Ichiro all being moved to the Yanks? Any ideas?

Actually I think Jack Wilson could be a great fit to replace Pena.

  41. Hey Kelvin says June 11th, 2010 at 11:57 am

    RayVT

Seattle won’t trade Ichiro. he is their remaining ‘franchise’ player.

Lee to the yanks is a possibility, not Wilson though. Maybe to another team, for sure.

  43. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 11:58 am

Ichiro has a no trade and Seattle would revolt if he got traded.

I also don’t think the Yankees are interested in taking on that kind of money since they have a RF having a better year than Ichiro making less than half his money.

5 million a year is a lot for a bench player, which takes Wilson out of play.

  44. Billy D June 11th, 2010 at 11:59 am

    Ray:

Jack Wilson might now be a worse hitter than Pena. Not sure he gives anything Pena doesn’t give you now.

As for Ichiro, he’s signed thru 2012 at $17M per. Yankees don’t really need him and at his age with his contract, I kind of doubt they want him.

  45. vinny-b (Brett Gardner will never see the bench again) June 11th, 2010 at 12:00 pm

  49. RayVT June 11th, 2010 at 12:05 pm

Thanks Everyone! I remember Jack Wilson from a few years ago and was thinking he could still hit. I haven’t seen much of him last couple years. I believe Ichiro’s contract is up this year and that is why I asked? I understand he is face of team though. I was thinking if he were with the Yanks, then a rotation for DH could keep folks fresh. A lot of money though!

I heard Mariners were scouting the Yanks on news night before last & just wondered who could be in play besides Lee.

    SJ44,

I am going to sound like Chip for a minute here but what are your thoughts on David Dejesus?

He’s a very good fielder, having a nice year at the plate and for 5 mill he’s a not all that expensive. My only issue is, will he get enough playing time and how much would Cashman have to give up for him?

It’d give Girardi a ton of flexibility to do what he wants and it’d really strengthen the bench. Only downside is Dejesus is a left handed hitter.

But could you imagine the lineup?

    Jeter SS
    Dejesus RF
    Teixeira 1B
    Rodriguez 3B
    Cano 2B
    Posada C
    Granderson CF
    Swisher DH
    Gardner LF

Philly is where they change the way the train is powered. From electric to steam to diesel to gas (or whatever). I’ve waited in upwards of 45 minutes to an hour waiting for the switch to be made. Hope Bryan brought a good book to read.

    Re: trades….

Best thing to do is think small to big rather than big to small.

What I mean by that is, it’s doubtful they will do a big deal for a big player because they don’t have that kind of a glaring need.

It’s more about adding a bench piece, a bullpen arm, etc. Smaller pieces to plug holes.

Also, those deals cost less prospect-wise, which is key right now.

No sense draining better assets to plug small holes on the team.

  57. GreenBeret7 June 11th, 2010 at 12:11 pm

Jack Wilson has been out for more than a month with hamstring issues and just started rehab assignment..

  58. GreenBeret7 June 11th, 2010 at 12:15 pm

Although he can’t play shortstop, he does play, 1st, 2nd and 3rd base and he can hit, Seattle may be interested in moving Jose Lopez.

someone emailed me this Yogi Berra story, some of you would feel much better if you remembered it the next time a Yankees pitcher has a bad first inning, like AJ did last night:

It’s the World Series and Whitey is pitching. Unlike him on the big stage the first pitch he throws he gives up a single. On the first pitch to the next batter he gives up a single!

Stengel calls time out and as he is walking to the mound he signals to Berra to walk with him. He asks Berra ” what do you think Whitey has tonight”?

Yogi said he turned to Stengel and says ” How the hell should I know, I haven’t caught a pitch yet”?

  62. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 12:16 pm

    Patrick,

I like DeJesus. Here is the issue…..

You can make the argument Swisher has been the best RF in the AL this year. I wouldn’t want to mess with him and make him the DH.

Also, DeJesus can’t play RF. He’s strictly a LF.

If they could get him and DH him, and he can handle being a DH rather than an everyday OF, that would interest me.

A Nova-Adams offer for DeJesus could tempt the Royals.

Lee is not being traded to the yankees. the rotation is one place we dont need another player.

And i think dejesus played right field yesterday or sometime this past week no?

  67. RayVT June 11th, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Erica in NY June 11th, 2010 at 12:08 pm

LOL! Ichiro would bat 1st. Jeter 2nd. Swish would move to DH & play corner OF to spell guys. Gardner would probably rest & a RH bat would DH against most LHP.

But this isn’t going to happen. I misread that Ochiro was a FA after 2010 & I was wrong.

  68. Patrick June 11th, 2010 at 12:21 pm

I don’t think DeJesus is an option. KC needs him and where is he going to play. If he were a switchhitter or RH bat, maybe.

Why does KC need him? He’s a FA next year and KC is going nowhere.

And SJ44, Dejesus has played 2 innings in LF this year, the rest has been in RF.

  69. RayVT June 11th, 2010 at 12:23 pm

    LOL! Ichiro

  70. Patrick June 11th, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Although SJ44, I do agree that I’d be very hesitant to move Swish off of RF.

  71. RayVT June 11th, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Actually DeJesus has a club option for 2011.

  72. Jerkface June 11th, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Ichiro has a no trade clause but its public knowledge his choices were NY and Seattle last time he was considering an extension.

  73. vinny-b (Brett Gardner will never see the bench again) June 11th, 2010 at 12:24 pm

    “Why does KC need him?”
    ——————————–

patrick: because a team has to score at least 1-2 runs, per game

  74. Billy D June 11th, 2010 at 12:26 pm

“Why does KC need him? He’s a FA next year and KC is going nowhere.”

Plus their OF will be getting crowded as Ankiel is due back fairly soon and Alex Gordon may be coming back up as an outfielder.

I think it’s a near certainty that DeJesus is moved.

  75. Bret the Hitman June 11th, 2010 at 12:26 pm

That’s right. DeJesus is a RF this year. He’s a defensive upgrade over Swisher. I don’t have any problem with Swisher being the DH. He has DH’d plenty in his career. Switch hitter. Perfect DH.

I like SJ’s proposal of Nova + Adams but I think KC really wants a shortstop so maybe Ramiro Pena or Eduardo Nunez would interest them.

    McAllister + Nunez might work.

  76. Patrick June 11th, 2010 at 12:27 pm

Actually DeJesus has a club option for 2011.

Yes with a 0.5 m buyout. And the Royals aren’t going to compete in 2011 either so they really don’t need him.

  77. Bret the Hitman June 11th, 2010 at 12:29 pm

DeJesus has a 6 million dollar club option for 2011. The Royals will NOT be picking up the option. Greinke’s salary doubles next year and their struggling with ticket sales in the down economy. DeJesus can play all 3 OF positions in a pinch and he’s a solid bat in the middle of his prime. He’s 30.

  78. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Problem is, he’s not a good RF.

The other problem about moving Swisher out of RF is, Nick is a hype guy.

Those guys usually don’t end up as good DH’s.

If they got him and used him as the DH and rotate him around in the OF for defensive purposes, that’s a possibility.

But, I don’t believe Swisher has done anything wrong to warrant losing his job to David DeJesus….or anybody else for that matter, this year.

  79. RayVT June 11th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Actually I’m not totally sold on Ichiro. He is a great hitter, SB threat & plays gold glove defense with a great arm, but one never knows how things could work out.

I was just trying to see if Seattle is a viable trade partner, who would be available. Milton Bradley (NO), Cliff Lee, Jack Wilson, or Ichiro are all high dollar guys which are usually pushed by teams out of the race or rebuilding.

  80. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Nick is a **hyper** guy. Sorry for the typo.

  81. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 12:34 pm

I wouldn’t trade Nunez for DeJesus.

If you have a SS prospect as good as Nunez, you trade him for a better player than David DeJesus or you hold onto him.

Pena? They have Betancourt so, I don’t see that as a possibility. But, if Dayton Moore would take him, I’d have no problem dealing him.

  82. Bret the Hitman June 11th, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Then DH DeJesus and move DeJesus to LF or RF late in games.

Having a DH who can play all 3 OF spots eliminates the need for Russo. If Nick Johnson comes back, he’d take Russo’s spot as a pinch hitter. If a Gardner, Granderson or Swisher goes down, DeJesus can take one of those spots.

  83. Bret the Hitman June 11th, 2010 at 12:37 pm

KC really needs a shortstop. They might insist on Nunez as part of the deal for DeJesus. Nunez is not really needed on the Yankees for anything more than a trade chip.

  85. GreenBeret7 June 11th, 2010 at 12:38 pm

I saw last night that Swisher was being blamed for that play in right field. Could he have caught the ball? Sure, if he could jump, but, he has no ability to jump at all. The ball kept drifting on him, much like the home run to Moore. Give Baltimore credit in that they were able to get the ball in the air in that direction. NYYs failed to take advantage of that 15-18 MPH wind blowing out to right field.

  86. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 12:41 pm

The one thing we have seen with the Yankees the past few years is, they aren’t giving up high end prospects for non-high end players.

Curtis Granderson is a high end player. That’s why you trade a Austin Jackson for him.

Javy Vazquez finished 4th in the Cy Young voting last year. That makes him a high end player. That’s why you trade Arodys Vizcaino for him.

Last year the Mariners wanted Austin Jackson for Jarrod Washburn. Washburn is not a high end player and the Yankees turned it down.

My point is, guys like Montero, Nunez, Romine are high end prospects, given their talents and the position they play.

That means, you have to get something of greater value in return if you decide to deal them.

David DeJesus is a nice, complimentary piece as a player. He’s not a standout in any one thing. Just a nice player who, if the deal is right, could help the Yankees.

That takes the price to get him down a few pegs from the Yankees perspective, IMO.

  88. Patrick from CT June 11th, 2010 at 12:43 pm

The rotation is fine and the bullpen is OK too. The only pitcher I see being replaced at this point is Gaudan.
The bench will get another player as soon as Posada can get behind the plate. I guess if the Yankees don’t make a trade soon Miranda makes the most sence to bring up.
Pena is on the team for his glove and that glove is staying.
Thames is a RH pinch hitter or DH and is fine in that roll; just don’t play him in the OF.
Russo has not hit much lately and a 4th OF with a better bat may be coming if he doesn’t start to hit again.
When is Nick Johnson supposed to be able to play again? Late July?

  89. GreenBeret7 June 11th, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Nunez is the only shortstop bridge from Jeter to the new wave of recent draftees. Makes zero sense to trade him for an outfield rental who’s only real skill is getting some hits, but, even at that, he’s a career .288 hitter with little speed and little power.

Injured or Not, Arod’s numbers are down-ESPN

    A-Rod’s numbers, early exit troubling
Slugger invokes name of hip surgeon after leaving game early with right groin ‘cramp

It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that the numbers are down and the production is off. But it may take a surgeon to figure out why.

All season long, Rodriguez and Yankees manager Joe Girardi have swatted away questions regarding A-Rod’s obvious power shortage this season with a lot of seam-head talk about run production and the lack of importance of A-Rod’s hallmark stat, the home run.

A-Rod (pictured Wednesday) never even swings a bat Thursday — leaving his status up in the air.
But the truth is, hitting home runs is why Alex Rodriguez is here in the first place. It is why the Texas Rangers saw fit to give him a 10-year, $252 million contract in 2001, and why the Yankees chose to extend him for another seven years — at a salary bump to $275 million, no less — following his 2007 MVP season.

Nobody pays $33 million a year for a moderately powered .290 hitter, not even the Yankees, and yet that is what Alex Rodriguez has become this year.

The $275 million question is why?

  94. Wave Your Hat June 11th, 2010 at 12:48 pm

Offensively, what the Yanks need is a right hand hitting outfielder who can play LF against lefties, hit OK with some power and fill in at DH some once Jorge goes back to catching.

Those kind of guys ought to grow on trees, but I can’t identify one we are likely to get on any team which would be likely to trade him to us right now.

  95. Damon enjoy 27....think 28 June 11th, 2010 at 12:49 pm

Houston has one of the worst offenses in the Majors. last in BA.237, 29th with just 36 homers, 28 th in RBIs, and, 27th in hits. Yankees should be able to get this done!!

  96. vinny-b (Brett Gardner will never see the bench again) June 11th, 2010 at 12:49 pm

frankly, don’t know why the Yankees need to add any offense

  97. Bret the Hitman June 11th, 2010 at 12:51 pm

    SJ,

Do you think Nunez really belongs in the same category of other high end prospects like Austin Jackson, Arodys Vizcaino, Jesus Montero and Austin Romine?

    I don’t think he does.

If the Royals insist on Eduardo Nunez, you’d pass on a chance to bolster the team with DeJesus? This team has zero OF depth and Pena backing up Jeter. As you stated, they may pass on Crawford and focus on Lee.

DeJesus makes even more sense if that’s their plan.

  98. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 12:52 pm

The three worst teams the Yankees have played this year are Baltimore, Chicago and Cleveland. They are 15-3 against those teams.

The three worst teams the Red Sox have played this year are Baltimore, Cleveland and KC. They are 10-10 against those teams.

I don’t think “giving games away” to bad teams has been a problem. They aren’t going to go undefeated against bad teams. No team is in MLB.

  99. Bret the Hitman June 11th, 2010 at 12:52 pm

    Wave,

Why fixate on the lefty, righty thing. DeJesus is an excellent baserunner, high contact, high OBP guy. He’s the perfect number 2 hitter.

    Chip, is this you?

no offense intended Bret, but aside from being from Rutgers, what the hell is so attractive about David DeJesus ?

  104. Yankee Trader June 11th, 2010 at 12:56 pm

DeJesus played almost all the games in 2009 in left field with 13 assists, no errors. I don’t see him as a DH oe a utility player, even though the Royals hold a club option on him for 2011 at 6 million, if I recall correctly.

I’d like some thoughts on Tex from the left side, batting against the shift. Can he ever lay down a bunt? Would he be more useful batting from the right side, away from Yankee Stadium, against a righty?

  105. Erin June 11th, 2010 at 12:56 pm

  106. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 12:56 pm

    bret,

There aren’t a lot of good SS prospects in AAA around MLB right now. Nunez is near the top of that list. That makes him a valuable commodity.

Look at it another way….Jason Donald was used as a chip by the Phillies to get Cliff Lee.

Donald was considered a top SS prospect.

Nunez has more upside than Donald.

That’s why he will have more value than just bringing in DeJesus, IMO.

If you are looking for a RH bat, I’m sure Austin Kearns will be on the market and he certainly could fill a role on the bench. He wouldn’t extract a high prospect cost.

Neither David Dejesus nor Austin Kearns have the power I’d like to see, and ideally I’d like a bit better fielder than Kearns. Also, I think DeJesus is likely to cost more talent in a trade than the Yanks would be willing to accept.

  110. Yankee Trader June 11th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Kearns, Branyan might soon be available.
Where is Jonny Gomes when you need him instead of Thames???? I remember the contraversy on this blog when his name was mentioned as a possibility for left field/DH.

At the very least, DeJesus is a 2 hitter who can fit in as a DH while rotating in the OF.

At the very most DeJesus could take over LF with GG defense if Gardner suffers a market correction.

Even in the worst case scenario, DeJesus is quite valuable.

I sat there once last year. The jimBeam suite itself is a waste of time IMHO.It is basically a place to go if it is hot no seats and you watch the game on TV.The seats themselves were not bad at all right behind home plate and you could see pretty much everything. They were high up but other than that good.
