The man in the middle

Yankees Orioles Baseball

Consider this a very small version of Guess The Lineup.

As you’re well aware, Alex Rodriguez had to be pulled from last night’s game because of lingering discomfort in his groin. Of course there’s a chance Rodriguez will show up at Yankee Stadium this afternoon feeling 100 percent, but Joe Girardi has acknowledged that his clean-up hitter might need a day or two (and let’s face it, if he’s going to need a day or two, taking those days against Houston isn’t a bad idea). The question is, if Rodriguez isn’t in the lineup, who’s the cleanup hitter?

Last night, Girardi mentioned Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada as candidates, but to me the choice is crystal clear. It’s gotta be Robinson Cano, right? You might remember the last time Rodriguez needed  day off, Cano stepped into the clean-up spot for the first time in his career and went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Granted, that was before Posada came off the disabled list, but I think the answer remains the same.

The bottom of the order moves up one spot — Posada bats fifth to split the lefties Cano and Curtis Granderson — and Swisher stays in the No. 2 hole. Is there a better way to handle it?

    Couple of questions:
    Is Gardener back tonight?
A Rod was feeling this discomfort back in Toronto, how come he wasn’t held out longer?
When does Jorge start catching again?

  4. Irreverent Discourse June 11th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

erin – i don’t know… the look on his face there says to me “i should have started running”. lol…

Hmmm..Maybe Chad is a bit jealous we get to sit around and play GTLU all day..?

  6. G. Love June 11th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Really hope we’re past the point with Robbie that the team fears moving him from his normal batting slot.

They’ve clearly done this with Tex thinking he can’t handle the demotion in the lineup when it was more than warranted.

You can’t keep treating Cano with kid gloves. He’s proven this season the old theory that he couldn’t hit above the 6 spot is over.

Pesonally, I’d rather see him hit 3 and Tex 4 while Arod is out. I want Cano to get the definite at bat in the first inning.

As for Arod, I really wish the Yankees could have stuffed Ty Wiggington into their luggage upon leaving Baltimore.

He’s exactly the player this team needs and his bat, presence and versatility would be perfect here.

It’d be nice to be able to pencil him at 3b while Arod gets the groin right and give Arod some DH time.

Cano 2010: Batting title, American League MVP, All-Star, World Series MVP, Silver Slugger, Gold Glove and World Series Ring.

Gonna be a season to remember.

ARod’s problem was glaring at the game on Saturday June 5. I was there and watched him constantly stretching and shaking his right leg every chance he got for the entire (14 innings) game. It was hard to miss. At one point, he sat in front of the dugout with his right leg stretched out in front of him. He wasn’t pulled from that game even though it went to extra innings. Fingers crossed he’s okay.

If the Yankees keep pace and take 2/3 from the Astros, they’ll head into the off day having won 13/19 and on a 110 win pace for a whole season.
This while Mark has been hot and cold, Alex .288/.317/.475. They struggled at the right time, the team picked them up. If they rebound we’ll see some amazing ball.

And hit who? Pena? Russo? Thames against Myers?

  20. Patrick June 11th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

David DeJesus is fine in RF, better than Swisher if we are talking about range.

I don’t want to move Swish from RF but Dejesus helps the lineup and the bench a great deal. Also gives Girardi more flexibility

  21. Alex June 11th, 2010 at 1:47 pm

    Jeter
    Granderson
    Tex
    Cano
    Swisher

If Gardner plays put him second and granderson 7th.

I don’t think Joe will start both Russo and Pena because of their lack of power. So unfortunately we are stuck with Thames in the LF. Hopefully Gardy can come in and play D late in the game…

  31. Crawdaddy June 11th, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Posada isn’t playing the field so he should DH everyday until he’s ready to catch then give him some time off.

  32. Shame Spencer June 11th, 2010 at 1:54 pm

mick – She was chased out this morning. I think it was even before 10am. Must be some kinda record. Its a shame she can’t just post and those that don’t like it can’t ignore it.

  33. Alex June 11th, 2010 at 1:55 pm

    Mick,

Would you rather have a weak bottom third, or gardner bat second who has hit alot better lately.

    He Probably won’t play anyway.

  34. Wave Your Hat June 11th, 2010 at 1:57 pm

    Billy D-

Kearns has been hot lately. I was thinking about him when we played the Indians, but my worry about him still is those 2008 and 2009 seasons and his defense. If he’s the only guy available I’d take him, but I’d rather wait a while longer and see who else might crop up once more teams start falling out of it.

  35. mick June 11th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

I saw she was here and it didn’t look too bad on her for her to leave.

  38. Patrick from CT June 11th, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Lots of ways to go here and the timing could be right to move Cano into the 3 hole and move Tex down to 4. When Arod comes back Tex goes to #5. Cano is the best hitter on the team; isn’t the 3 hole for the best hitter?

  39. Whatever June 11th, 2010 at 2:04 pm

    Cano> Ramiro Pena

  40. mick June 11th, 2010 at 2:05 pm

Cano could be moved to 3rd if they ever gave Tex a day off. Swish could play 1st.
    Joe won’t demote Tex.

  41. Patrick June 11th, 2010 at 2:05 pm

    Cano> Ramiro Pena

    WOOOW really!?!?

  42. mick June 11th, 2010 at 2:06 pm

Betsy is lurking, I can feel it.
She can’t stay away from here like Trisha.

  43. Jim June 11th, 2010 at 2:06 pm

I’ll bet Tex gets 3 hits tonight with the red hot Cano behind him. Part of the reason Tex hasn’t been hitting is because Arod is not hitting enough hrs. When your #4 batter is keeping it in the park you can play game with #3.

  44. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 2:08 pm

    Cano>Pena.

    Don’t knock it Patrick.

It’s the most insightful thing whatever has ever posted here and he didn’t use all caps to do it.

  45. Patrick June 11th, 2010 at 2:09 pm

    SJ44,

Very true, it’s probably the only thing that guy has said that I actually agree with!

  46. mick June 11th, 2010 at 2:09 pm

Tex is starting to hit anyway.

  47. Jim June 11th, 2010 at 2:09 pm

I’ll take Russo over Thames any day of the week. Thames doesn’t go long at a large enough rate to compensate for his horrendous fielding. Russo can get key hits, score from 1st on a double, hit and run and win a game for you with his glove. The Yankees play better when guys like Cervelli, Pena, Russo fill out the bottom of the lineup. They can move runners for the top of the lineup.

The federal appeals court ruling is a HUGE blow to the feds case against Bonds. Lawyers can the Feds appeal to a higher level court and at this point is the next level of Appeal to the Supreme court and would they even take the case if it was?

I got your lineup, too, Warning Track Power.

  53. NYYROC June 11th, 2010 at 2:15 pm

The team can get by in the short run with Russo, Pena & Cervelli at the bottom as long as Joe uses them in a NL way. Expecting 2 or 3 of them to string hits together to produce a run is probably asking too much. If one gets on, bunt, hit & run, steal, something along those lines to get into scoring position for the top of the order.

You know last night there were none of the “regulars” commenting about anything. It was like the blog was taken over by people from another planet.

As far as Betsy goes. She is a sweetheart who opens herself up for criticism all the time. I hope she returns soon. She adds a certain something to the atmosphere here.

  67. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

    SAS,

Betsy is fine. She just obsesses over Phil Hughes too much.

Its ends up being the same conversation each day. Talking her off the ledge about Hughes.

Its probably best to institute a “policy” of only talking about Hughes on the days he pitches for awhile.

This way, it keeps her calm and she won’t overthink anything she sees written about the guy.

In terms of the game threads, here is the reality of them…..

With school out now, its going to be filled with trolls, morons, children and imposters.

They will fill the place with nonsense once the Yankees fall behind in a game.

If they lose? They will want mass firings and immediate trades.

Its just the way its going to be from now until the end of the season.

I’ll put in my vote for year round school now to save the game threads! lol

  68. SAS June 11th, 2010 at 2:37 pm

    SJ44,

Your line about year round school is very funny.

  70. Shame Spencer June 11th, 2010 at 2:38 pm

I just wanna point out Betsy can’t have the same conversation every day all by herself. Those that comment on the site are completely free to ignore her posts and not respond if they feel the conversation has been rehashed enough… which, generally speaking, they don’t do.

Instead everyone engages in a healthy debate, which often provides good pitching insight. Then, after the conversation has gone on for some time and become repetitive, the same people responding begin to complain that its the same conversation every day… a conversation which they continue to partake in.

I’m not trying to start with anyone, but (IMO) this is a pretty consistent pattern.

No matter what the line-up is tonight, we still have a very good chance to win
    the game.

Pena(aka Nino) could be the hero. You never know.

Wave Your Hat June 11th, 2010 at 2:56 pm
Considering that Tex and Jorge aren?t hitting, and ARod and Gardner are probably not available, whatever lineup we trot out there will be one of our weakest of the year, if not the weakest.

    ***************************
Good thing they’re facing Houston. ;)

  90. SJ44 June 11th, 2010 at 2:58 pm

    Betsy,

You are correct. Phil is A member of the team. Not THE member of the team.

Talking about him is fine. However, you sometimes take it to a different level. Especially whenever there is a percieved media slight of Hughes.

Go back and look at the posts from the last three days. They are essentially the same conversation each day. JMO but, that’s overkill.

It borders on the Arod obsession some folks had a few years ago when EVERYTHING was about Arod.

He’s an important member of the team having a very good year so far. We don’t have to microanalyize it.

I’ve heard the “classics” once too many times I think. It would be nice to get into modern stuff, but it all sounds the same (oh no, I sound like my dad!). A-Rod credits Phillippon for saving his career last year, it seems like he truly values his opinion as a doctor. Isn’t it akin to having a family doctor that you go to your whole (or most) of your life and trust his opinion & feel comfortable with, perhaps? A-Rod is a person (or centaur, at least), after all, and he may prefer one doctor.

But of course, it must REALLY mean that his hip is further injured and he’s going to be out forever and is washed up and so on and so forth.
