Yankees finish off sweep of Houston

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jun 13, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Until yesterday, Jorge Posada was struggling. He’s now hit a grand slam in back-to-back games, caught for the first time in almost a month and helped the Yankees finish off a series sweep against the Astros. Ramiro Pena had a big single and made a great play at third, Phil Hughes picked up his ninth win and Chad Huffman got his first big league hit in a 9-5 win that was the Yankees eighth straight win at home.

  53. CB June 13th, 2010 at 5:09 pm

18 runs in two games without Alex. Not bad. Hughes had that one rough patch but those things happen, particularly in those conditions.

It’s really remarkable what a difference Posada makes in this line up.

When the finally can get Alex, Tex and Posada in the line up and hitting at the same time the team is going to be extremely difficult to beat given the pitching.

    CB,

Did you watch the Germans today or held tight on the Yankee game?

  62. SJ44 June 13th, 2010 at 5:17 pm

    CB,

Its really amazing they are where they are in the standings considering all of the injuries the last six weeks, Tex slumping all season, and Jeter slumping most of May.

Its why I don’t get the folks complaining about the bench. The bench is one of the reasons WHY they are where they are.

Each of those guys have contributed something toward winning some games.

Individually, they may not be great players or “name” players.

However, collectively, they help the team win.

Russo wins a game at Citi Field with his bat and saves a game in Baltimore with his glove.

Cervelli has hit with RISP all year.

Winn, when he was here, won a game with a 3 run HR.

Thames beat the Red Sox with one swing.

Pena today saved a big inning with his glove in the first and delivered a two run hit to open things up today.

This is the sign of a very good team.

When you also add in the improvement in the bullpen, once they get healthy, its going to be a very dangerous team the rest of the way.

  63. GreenBeret7 June 13th, 2010 at 5:17 pm

Except for Jimenez, every pitcher in baseball with more than two starts has had a game this year just like Hughes had this season, including both of last year’s Cy Young Award winners. As long as he and the team got the win, I don’t care about the runs. I prefer that he challenge the hitters when he has a big lead rather than start nibbling and walking hitters. a sign a maturity.

  64. igotid88 June 13th, 2010 at 5:19 pm

5 days rest could help Hughes

  65. Al June 13th, 2010 at 5:19 pm

    17 games over .500 on June 13th.

June 13th last year? 8 games over .500

  66. blake June 13th, 2010 at 5:22 pm

This team is starting to show a knack for winning and what I mean by that is that they are winning in a lot of different ways and by contributions from a lot of different guys. That’s a good thing and a sign of a good team and organization.

It really is amazing the impact Posada has when he’s in there and producing…(hall of famer).

  67. CB June 13th, 2010 at 5:24 pm

    SJ-

I agree – it’s remarkable that the team is tied for first place. Just think how well Tampa has played – how much attention and plaudits they’ve received. They’ve played way past what anyone thought they would do.

And they haven’t had any major injuries.

And despite playing so well – despite their pitching staff performing at historically great levels where to they find themselves headed into mid-June?

Tied with the yankees. And this while the yankees have been wracked by injuries.

Tampa really has to hope that they continue to have such great luck with injuries because if they get banged up it’s going to be very difficult for them to keep pace with a yankees club that has already proven that it has the slack capacity to make up for not only staggering injuries but complete non-performance by Vazquez and Tex.

    That’s a very tall order.

Yankee fans are far too fixated on the bench and bull pen. Too many have a limited sense of what baseball is like in terms of rosters for the vast majority of teams in the league.

This is a tremendous club that has the potential to be truly great if the healthy issues get straightened out.

  68. Comet June 13th, 2010 at 5:25 pm

My one concern is Granderson. Hitting around .200 against LH pitching and only .241 overall. 5 HR. 5 SB. Hope he’ll come around.

  69. Lime June 13th, 2010 at 5:25 pm

Strasburg’s mechanics remind me of Melancon’s. A little slower though.

  70. SJ44 June 13th, 2010 at 5:25 pm

    GB,

I’m amazed at the overreaction toward Hughes’ outing today.

He pitched to the scoreboard in the 6th. He just couldn’t finish the job in the rain to the #8 and #9 hitters.

    I don’t see that as a big deal. I really don’t.

One more pitch to Manzanella, and he’s through 6 giving up one run.

    It happens. That’s baseball.

As I said earlier, at the start of the season, who on here had Hughes at 9-1 on June 13?

Folks need to be happy with what he’s doing and stop whining.

He’s an All Star pitcher this year and he’s only 23 years old.

If he was on another team, folks on here would be begging Cashman to trade for him.

  71. stuart June 13th, 2010 at 5:27 pm

THe yanks have had tons of injuries and they still keep plugging away..

gardner is really important to this team….

  72. CB June 13th, 2010 at 5:29 pm

    LGY-

I had both on once the match started. I was primarily watching Germany though. I really wanted to see them play, Mesut Ozil in particular. Mostly watching the yankees to see how Hughes was pitching and highlights for the score.

Germany was just mind boggling. Right now the mix of players they have is very interesting. That is a team that does what German teams traditionally do well, but then has a number of younger players who add completely new dimensions to that traditional German model.

Mesut Ozil is scintillating. He is perhaps the finest young soccer player in the entire world (and by “young” I mean both young by age and still not yet developed as a superstar like Messi who is only 23). He is a spectacular talent.

Not to mention if conditions were better then granderson may have caught that ball, jeter probably at least knocks that one down, and Hughes may pitch those guys differently…its really not a big deal when you consider that he controlled the game up until that point.

The box score is a poor reflection of the performance in this case…

People on here at the start of the season were talking about if Hughes, Vazquez and Pettitte each won 12-13 games that NYYs would be in great shape at the end. They’re in better shape to win 15+ games and have ERAs at 4 and under each. then, add in Burnett and Sabathaia and you have 75 wins from the rotation and that’s low. I’ll take that every year.

We haven’t gotten over the hump yet, but let’s take a moment (or the rest of the day) to enjoy the view (just ignore those Rays standing right next to us).

I’m calling for a moratorium on complaints about the offense for as long as we hold on to the best record in the majors and/or remain at or near the top of the major offensive categories.

    Maine,

Greatest post-game comment by a coach in history….

The late John McKay coaching the winless Tampa Bay Bucs….

After a loss, the first reporter’s question to him was…

“Coach, about your teams execution today”….

His response….”I’m all for it”!! lol

Yanks winning % has them on pace to win 103 games.

Great to see the Yanks back in 1st place (tied). Hopefully the Yankees remain there for the rest of the season.

GB – did I read that right? Austin Jackson’s batting average is dropping? And his career is in jeopardy?

I think it’s important to not use the term “Yankee fans” when referring to some of the drivel that gets posted here. Don’t confuse Yankee fans with some of the types who write some stuff. They likely have another agenda.

Nah, sorrym about that Joe. Someone put out the info that Jackson had back spasms in the first inning of today’s game. Just poking fun at the “intelligentsia” that tends to show up here on a daily basis.

    Here’s the Jackson article.

    Roger-

I was looking forward to watching the Oranje bright and early tomorrow, but unfortunately I have meetings all day and won’t be able to.

I’ll watch the matches in the evening when I get home. Really looking forward to seeing the Dutch.

I’m sure they aren’t your favorite team, but when is the last time you saw a German team play like that? It’s such a different team with such different talents than Germany usually has – ones that really reflect the last generation of immigration into Germany. Look at how well Kheidira played in place of Ballack.

If Klose was in better form it would have been 6-0.

Austrlia isn’t particularly good – but that match had much more to do with Germany than Australia.

A big difference the German side has right now is Ozil. He’s very young but immensely talented and adds qualities that Germany rarely has in terms of creativity, imagination and technical skill.

Ozil would make an ideal Dutchman!!

Lahm is simply a world class player.

Also back to 5 games in front of the Red Sox

Remember the children who said that Joba’s implosion sent them on a roll and they would overtake us soon as a result? lol

Almost one month later, they have gained exactly 1 game on us (6 back when they left YS, 5 now).

How about John Chaney threatening to kill John Calipari? Now THAT was a meltdown:

did you see when Robbie had his arm around Nino, after Robbie hit his HR to tie the game? Then Nino goes up and gets the 2 go ahead runs. I thought it was sweet. Robbie is evolving from young player to veteran.

Standings look pretty good now. We hit 40 wins. The Sox are 5 GB in the loss column.

Just need to shake off the Rays.

Yankees doing what they’re supposed to, make hay in interleague. Gotta keep up the pace.

Posada looking terrific at the plate.

And GGBG looking pretty good, too. Loved how Paulie was explaining how Gardner must be feeling because he was able to get his hands around on those inside pitches. That guy sure knows his stuff. :)

Kay nearly killed me on Tex’s double/misplayed ball off the wall.

    Klose is a person?

There’s a really funny Vitamin Water commercial starring Kobe and his ability to “klose”. He’s a big soccer fan, must be a connection there…

  101. GreenBeret7 June 13th, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Kate, I can see Hughes evolving into that same “youngster to veteran” mentor about 3-4 years down the road. He has really learned his craft well under the guiding hands of Rivera, Pettitte and even Burnett. He’s the logical successor to the leadership role for pitchers, along with Sabathia.

“I thought it was sweet. Robbie is evolving from young player to veteran.”

For a long time, Cano could essentially act as a secondary player for the yanks. If he went on a tear and produced he was a huge added benefit. But he didn’t need to be one of the core guys.

That started to change last season and it’s gone into overdrive this season. He rarely gives away at bats anymore. He is so much more disciplined and patient. He’s looking to not only hit the ball but to maximize the amount of damage he does in any at bat.

And I think part of that is the process through which responsibility is being shifted to him as other players get older.

He’s stepped up and accepted that responsibility.

good point GB. maybe we are seeing the beginning of another core group :)

  106. Roger(The Dutch Yankees Fan) June 13th, 2010 at 6:05 pm

Really liked the way they played. It’s not something you normally see from them.It might have something to do with Bayern.A lot of them play for Bayern and they really turned things around this season as well

I saw your post about Argentina.I was a little surprised that you liked them.I thought they didn’t play very well. Can someone tell me why Milito didn’t start?Or Aguero?

How about last night game huh.

Interesting note on Jorge Vazquez’ promotion from trenton to Scranton. They brought him up to play 3rd base.
