A-Rod and more Yankees pregame

Posted by: Brian Heyman - Posted in Misc on Jun 15, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Brian Heyman here at Yankee Stadium, just up from the clubhouse.

A-Rod went through his pregame work and said, “I felt OK. No setbacks.” He went to get more treatment and said he would talk to Joe Girardi about whether he will be available off the bench tonight. The injury has been described as hip flexor tendinitis, but Rodriguez said it really is more in the groin area. While Girardi said A-Rod would be back at third tomorrow night if everything went OK with the pregame routine, Rodriguez left open the possibility of serving as a DH tomorrow. He also wouldn’t blame any injury-related reason for having just eight homers this season. “As far as my home runs, they’re just down. But the year’s not over yet. ”

With the Phillies in town, Chan Ho Park received his NL championship ring. … The Phillies have flipped their rotation for the rest of the series. Jamie Moyer moves up to tomorrow and Kyle Kendrick will go Thursday night.

Here’s is Philadelphia’s lineup:

1. Shane Victorino CF

2. Chase Utley 2B

3. Placido Polanco 3B

4. Ryan Howard 1B

5. Jayson Werth RF

6. Raul Ibanez LF

7. Ben Francisco DH

8. Juan Castro SS

9. Carlos Ruiz C

Repost: Cano with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 out:

    .857/.636/1.571/2.208

That’s way past even video game numbers.

  2. Gil L June 15th, 2010 at 6:15 pm

    utley batting 2nd… interesting…
splitting the lefties and the righties.
just goes to show how deep the offensive slum philly is in.

  3. MTU (aka GBURL) June 15th, 2010 at 6:15 pm

You know folks maybe if Cano could just find the cure for Cancer in addition to being one of the best ballplayers I have ever laid my eyes on he could amount to something.

failing that I just don’t see how he is really gonna be any good ?

    I reallly don’t.

  4. GreenBeret7 June 15th, 2010 at 6:15 pm

Good interview with Hughes on MLB-TV. Talked about learning to not nibble when he was in the pen last year, he also learned not to pace himself moving from the pen to the rotation.

Why did Mo teach Halladay his Cutter :x . Damn you Mo!

    GB-

Now if Joba could just get the same memo we’d be all set. ;)

GTLU Update – The poster by the name of “Everyone…but SJ and CB” had the right people but the wrong order, with the exeption of Russo instead of Pena.

I can’t believe anyone is still dissing Cano at this point. I join stuckey in the “just kill me now” when it comes to discussions about the “shortcomings” of Robi Cano.

    GB7 -

Batting practice????? Oy. I think you may be right – Gaudin got to him earlier; BP is just an excuse!

I would watch Polanco. He has a Yankee killer since days with the Tigers.

Looks more and more like the kid will sign. Good news.

  12. vblade June 15th, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Cano has many otherworldly stats, but this one’s my favorite:

    .372/.400/.558/.958

That’s his slash line on post 0-2 counts. Basically this is what he’s doing after falling behind 0-2, and working the count. Pulling that off requires tremendous bat control, plate coverage, and discipline all in one.

His slash line last year on post 0-2 counts?

    .250/.248/.410/.658

    That’s what I call improvement.

  13. Doreen - Remotely June 15th, 2010 at 6:37 pm

As a Yankee fan, I’m glad to hear that it sounds like he’s going to sign. As a parent though, turning down a college placement doesn’t sound goppd

    Swinging a bat ?????!!!!!!

GB7 when you told me bp I thought throwing bp. I HATE interleague !!!!! It seems like the Yankees lose a pitcher every time

back to Cito – of course also as a parent you are happy when your child can pursue their dream.

  14. MTU (aka GBURL) June 15th, 2010 at 6:41 pm

    You know what.

I bet their are a whole lot of hitters on yankees who swear by K Long.

Not to take anything away from Robbie but after Long helped robbie to change his stance to a more closed postion he has been better and better.

All that hard work in the Dominican over the off season really sent him skywards.

Look at Swisher this season so far. Awesome positive changes.:)

  15. Giuseppe Franco June 15th, 2010 at 6:42 pm

Don’t know why Mitre would be swinging a bat much anyways. It’s not like he’s going to start.

Even in the NL, most middle relievers never see the plate.

  16. Mike June 15th, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Where has Betsy aka mommy Hughes been hiding out the past few days?

  17. Don June 15th, 2010 at 6:46 pm

“Don’t know why Mitre would be swinging a bat much anyways. It’s not like he’s going to start.

Even in the NL, most middle relievers never see the plate.”

Agree… I never understand why relievers take BP.

I guess in case he is a long man or something and a starter gets knocked out early and Mitre has to have an AB?

  18. Y 27 June 15th, 2010 at 6:49 pm

Last year – Coke, Aceves, and MO (twice) took ABs in games in interleague parks. MO in Atlanta and Citi Field, Coke in Atlanta, Aceves in Florida.

I think Tomko might have too.

  19. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos June 15th, 2010 at 6:52 pm

Oh, they must take batting practice if there’s even a chance that they’ll come to bat. I just hate the whole idea that pitchers who never really have to hit, have to hit. (My entire opinion is a lot more complicated than that, but I don’t want to write a chapter!)

  20. GreenBeret7 June 15th, 2010 at 6:52 pm

Doreen, I don’t think Cito’s mom needs to be worried. He can use his bonus to buy his own classroom.

Perhaps part of his bonus will include having his college tuition paid for by the Yankees and go to school in the off-season. That wouldn’t be an uncommon addition in a first contract.

    +++++++++++++++++++++

Excellent to see that stat, really goes to the heart of the kind of player he has matured into when he has fallen behind in the at bats to still put up a .958 OPS, by working the counts into hittable scenarios instead of chasing pitches all over the zone and getting himself out.

  22. Tom in N.J. June 15th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

‘The problem with Cano is that he doesn’t hit with men on base

All his HRs are solo. For a guy with 13 HRs and 17 doubles, he only has 47 RBIs. That is the exact same as a guy like David Wright.

He doesn’t have the propensity to get the ‘big’ hit like a 3-R HR or bases clearing double. When he hits his extra base hits, they come with nobody on base for the most part.’

Cano 2010 with Men on base:

    .360ba/ .415OBP/ .579SLG/ .994OPS

And he has 5 home runs, 8 doubles, 1 tripple, 39 RBIs and a partridge in a pear tree with men on base.

  23. YankeesFan June 15th, 2010 at 6:56 pm

College degrees can be brought online now, just like book reports, papers, etc.

It’s just another wonderful thing about living in this modern society.

  24. MTU (aka GBURL) June 15th, 2010 at 6:57 pm

    Enjoy the game folks. :)

Please strap yourselves in. There could be a lot of turbulence with all the trolls and such.

  25. rover June 15th, 2010 at 6:59 pm

What? I wasn’t aware Cano had short comings. Maybe the most talented infielder I have ever seen. Time will tell.

  26. BIG AL June 15th, 2010 at 7:01 pm

Turning down a college ed for baseball may sound like a poor judgement to many parents, but, if the kid makes 3-4 million playing baseball, he’d have to make $100k for 40 years to equal that. Isn’t part of getting a college ed so you can go out and make a decent wage? If he were my son I’d tell him to foloow his heart and dreams, but, I’d also ask him to continue his ed in the off season, just in case.

    Brian Heyman,

Just a suggestion. I think you might want to secure your screen name: we shouldn’t be able to impersonate you.

  28. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos June 15th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

    BIG AL-

You’re right, of course, it just goes a little against the grain, for some reason. He obviously won’t need a scholarship, and he can always go to school anytime he wants. And if he’s successful at baseball, well, he’s working, right?? What more can a parent ask for – a self-sufficient, financially independent offspring. :)

  29. Jason J June 15th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Use this as the game thread. What’s the big deal?

    Let’s go Irabu !

  31. blake June 15th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Good start…Great slider at the back foot.

  32. BIG AL June 15th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Doreen – As a parent of 2 grown boys, I’ve experienced something similar. My oldest son turned down an appointment to the U.S. Navel Academy twice, it broke my heart, but, he did what his heart told him to do, and today he’s very happy. I still think, what if. As a parent you can only find solace in the fact your children are happy, and leading the lives they choose.

  33. SJ44 June 15th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Erica imposter. She said earlier she wasn’t going to be on until later tonight.

    nice start for CC.

  38. blake June 15th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

Weather is heatin up, the big guy might just come out of hibernation tonight.

  39. MG June 15th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

CC has that nasty slider tonight, that’s the pitch that makes him almost unhittable when he’s going well. He seemed to find it during his last start against Baltimore.

  40. Jeremy June 15th, 2010 at 7:19 pm

I guess Sabathia is an ace now because he didn’t get lit up in the first inning according to the trolls.
