All-stars at the gate, Girardi on the street, Jay-Z on the stage

We’ll start our Tuesday with three announcements from the Yankees. This was posted late last night, but just in case you missed it…

Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez will greet fans at Babe Ruth Plaza, just outside Yankee Stadium’s Great Hall along 161st St., before today’s game from 3-3:30 p.m.

Manager Joe Girardi will join Elizabeth H. Berger, President of the Alliance for Downtown New York, to unveil a granite strip commemorating last fall’s ticker-tape parade for the 2009 world champion New York Yankees. They’ll be surrounded by a dozen members of the Downtown Little League Yankees.

The Downtown Alliance, the business improvement district serving Lower Manhattan south of Chambers Street, has embedded a strip for each of the 204 parades that have run along the famed Canyon of Heroes parade route on Lower Broadway. Downtown Alliance Chairman Robert R. Douglass will also attend the ceremony.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 15, 2010, 11 a.m.
WHERE: 233 Broadway (west side of the street, in front of the Woolworth Building)

Tickets for the JAY-Z and Eminem concert on September 13 at Yankee Stadium will go on sale on June 25 at 10:00 a.m. online at www.livenation.com, via Ticketmaster phone at (800) 745-3000, via Ticketmaster TTY at (800) 943-4327 and at select area Ticketmaster outlets.

It will be the second of a home-and-home series of shows for New York City-native JAY-Z and Detroit-area-native Eminem, as the pair will also perform at Detroit’s Comerica Park on September 2.

While this event will serve as the Stadium’s first official concert, JAY-Z has previously performed at Yankee Stadium, singing his hit “Empire State of Mind” with Alicia Keys on October 29, 2009, prior to the Yankees’ 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 of the World Series.

Information regarding ticket pricing will be available at www.livenation.com at a later date.

Will they be showing Yankees-TB on the big screen during the show?

  2. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos June 15th, 2010 at 8:51 am

I actually know where the Woolworth Building is – I used to work right near it! I think that is a really neat idea to commemorate the parades.

Sure wish I could be at the stadium to see ARod and Cano meet-and-greet.

and, repost – am I misremembering that the Yankees played the Phillies early last season at the Stadium?

  3. Erin June 15th, 2010 at 8:51 am

I will be eternally jealous of anyone going to the game that meets Robbie and Alex beforehand.

And I’m repeating myself from the last thread, but a very happy birthday to Andy Pettitte today. :)

  4. upstate kate June 15th, 2010 at 8:54 am

    Doreen
the Yankees played the Phillies over Memorial Day weekend last year. I remember b/c that was our Yankee visit of the season, and we brought my son’s GF to her first mlb game.
CC was pitching the game we saw, which was lost in extras by Tomko.

  5. Rocco June 15th, 2010 at 8:55 am

Yes the yankees lost 2 of 3 to the Phillies memorial day weekend last year (I went to 2 of the games) and would have lost the 3rd is not for Lidge imploding giving up a walkoff hit to Melky.

  6. upstate kate June 15th, 2010 at 8:58 am

I also will be jealous, but I hope someone from here gets to go and provides a full report :)

and I will add a Happy Birthday to AP!

  7. 86w183 June 15th, 2010 at 9:04 am

I sure wish I was going to the game today so I could meet Alex and Robbie.

Birthday wishes to everybody celebrating today :)

  13. SAS June 15th, 2010 at 9:12 am

It would be fun to meet Arod and Cano. I am jealous too. It is supposed to be a gorgeous day for a change.

    Happy Birthday, 86w183 and Andy.

  14. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos June 15th, 2010 at 9:17 am

Thank you all for validating my memory!!!

It just seems odd that they not only play the Phillies in back-to-back years in interleague, but also both times in NY.

  15. pat June 15th, 2010 at 9:18 am

Hopefully, Alex is cleared to play today. Cashman said he received treatment on yesterdays off day but no decision on him playing would be made until he came in today.

It’s time for CC and Tex to start stepping it up!

    Have a great day 86. :)

  19. Chip June 15th, 2010 at 9:22 am

I know it’s a sideshow but I was thinking about the home run derby – wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to be an all-star to be in it?

It should be like the NBA’s Slam Dunk contest.

  20. The Philly Phitins June 15th, 2010 at 9:23 am

I wouldn’t be here if Andy, (de facto Ace of NYY) or Phil were starting tonight, we respect them too much. Your (cough) Ace won’t make the ASG , (funny after all he did in postseason) or your #2 head case AJ.

Andy (who we greatly admire in Philly) and the rookie Phil will make the team, because they’re that good.

WE were hoping for CC, AJ, and Javier, they can be beaten, oh well 2/3 not bad.

We know that AJ always has that one crazy inning, where he throws a ton of pitches, and anY team can score a ton of runs, before he comes back to earth. AJ loses it between1-5, but more oft innings 3-5, he implodes and the Phillies will attack, AJ is like clock work.

No Andy or Phil, think twice about 2/3 Yankees, the playing field is even! AJ will self destruct, and CC won’t know what hit him.

CC WILL do his signature, taking hat off scratching head, frowning his face, wondering What happened, when the Phillies eat him up!

CC will have Philly on the brain after tonight and a bad taste .

    Go Phitins!

  21. Erica in NY June 15th, 2010 at 9:32 am

    Happy Birthday 86w183!

  22. Patrick June 15th, 2010 at 9:34 am

Phitins I hope you stick around this blog for awhile so we can all see you eat crow after the Yanks sweep your beloved “phitins”

  23. LGY June 15th, 2010 at 9:37 am

“when the Phillies eat him up!”

    ——————————————

If anyone is going to be doing any eating out there on the field tonight, I think it is pretty safe to assume that it is going to be CC.

  24. The Philly Phitins June 15th, 2010 at 9:39 am

In Philly when CC is coughing up runs and is dumbstruck on the mound, it’s replayed over and over, we’re used to it, and his Era proves the point.

When Charlie said he well beat the NYY next year, this is One of those times, he’ll prove it.

I have spoken facts, you name call and make it personal, discussion seems to be beneath you on this blog.

You see in Philly you say what you mean, and mean what you say, it’s not a cookie cutter state, that’s how we roll!

    Go Phitins!

  25. GreenBeret7 June 15th, 2010 at 9:41 am

JB Cox has been reinstated to the active list and assigned to Tampa. Hopefully, he’s fully healthy and committed to playing. At age 26, he’s on his last rodeo.

  26. JM June 15th, 2010 at 9:43 am

Phitins, you should worry more about beating the Braves and the Mets. They’re both ahead of your team in the standings.

Happy birthday to a great Yankee, Andy Pettite, and a great Yankee fan, 86. Hope you both have a wonderful day.

  27. LGY June 15th, 2010 at 9:45 am

  28. CB June 15th, 2010 at 9:45 am

Today is one of those mornings where it’s just great to be a yankee’s fan.

The team is in first place in what is by far the most competitive division in baseball despite having a rash of injuries, Tampa Bay being very hot, and playing disproportionately few home games where they have over a .750 winning percentage.

And add to that another great night last night from the farm system where several young players look to be making real progress.

Very exciting time to support the pin stripes. These are times that don’t come around often.

  29. MTU (aka GBURL) June 15th, 2010 at 9:46 am

    GB-

I took some crap in here for daring to suggest that the Yankees plays some small ball against Hallladay tonite.

Hard to tell if I was arguing with the real Mick or his impersonator.

  30. Patrick June 15th, 2010 at 9:47 am

I am going to Thursday’s game and am hoping the Phillies can at least put up a fight. Watching a third straight blowout will be boring, hopefully the Phils can score at least a run or two and make it close.

They will be lucky to score 4 runs total in this series.

  31. JohnC June 15th, 2010 at 9:47 am

    Patrick

I already said win or lose I’ll be back. Phightins aren’t chickens, if we say it we stand behind it. I spoke facts YOU know are true. CC and AJ will be defeated, we respect Andy and know we wouldn’t beat him.

I WILL COME BACK WIN OR LOSE Patrick, Philly has been seething at CC since the WS!
Philly doesn’t hate the NYY, we know you’re the team to beat!!

    Go Phitins

I would add to that, Posada is back behind the plate, Curtis is back, and hopefully Alex as well

  35. 86w183 June 15th, 2010 at 9:51 am

Thanx for the well wishes everyone!

Chip, I agree 100 percent about the HR derby. I would choose non All Stars to take part. I would also shorten it to ten swings per round so guys don’t get absolutely exhausted and screw up their swings. Abreu and Hamilton are two examples of guys who never got their stroke back after that idiot event.

I shudder to think about Cano in it.

  36. upstate kate June 15th, 2010 at 9:54 am

I could be mistaken, but I don’t think you have to be an All Star to participate in the HR derby. Weren’t some non- All Stars asked to participate last year, but turned it down?

Watching Hamilton gave me chills, I love the HR derby :)

  37. The Philly Phitins June 15th, 2010 at 9:57 am

    CB

You’re tied for 1st place, and will be in 2nd after tonight, Doc owns the Yankees, remember?
Celebrate Thursday when the real Ace of the NYY, is on the mound, keeping you from a sweep.

Philly concedes Thursday to NYY, Andy’s got it going on!

    Go Phitins!

  40. blake June 15th, 2010 at 9:59 am

I haven’t seen Nunez play all that much but he was very impressive last night. Has the tools of a pretty dynamic player.

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

MTU, it wasn’t so much that I was advocating a “small ball” approach to Halladay, tonight, but, hitters with speed, like Jeter, Gardner need to give bunting for hits a try. They haven’t had a lot of success against him. Oddly, Pena is 2-6 with 2 doubles off of Halladay. Not sure who’s catching for Philadelphia tonight (probably Ruiz), but if speed gets on, the yankees need to run.

  46. Patrick June 15th, 2010 at 10:06 am

    Erin,

So did I until a few minutes ago haha. There is a desperate and comical quality about Phitins that made me think of the legendary Miss Cleo.

I think that Phillies fans might want to worry about passing the lesser New York team in the standings before they even think about the Yankees.

    Stuckey,

I know, he could bring a nice return to the right buyer or they may just ought to hang onto him for awhile and see how good he can become.

  54. MTU (aka GBURL) June 15th, 2010 at 10:19 am

    GB-

that is basically what I meant. The left side of the phillies infield is terrible. Pushing a few bunts out that way couldn’t hurt.

And I absolutlely agree about trying to steal and being agressive on the basepaths.

With a guy like Halladay on the mound you need to use ALL of your weapons.

  55. Chip June 15th, 2010 at 10:20 am

Here’s a question for those who closely follow the Yankee minor leagues:

Why is Eduardo Nunez still playing short stop?

From what I’ve heard and based on his numbers his bat is show ready, and if he’s not, he certainly will be come next season. And while he’s a tremendous athlete, he’s not a great defensive SS.

Problem with that is that there’s not going to be an opening for him at SS for at least the next four years.

So given that, as well as the Yankees lack of upper level outfield talent, wouldn’t it make sense to work Nunez in LF? If he’s athletic enough to adapt to the position he certainly has a bat that would play out there.

  56. blake June 15th, 2010 at 10:22 am

    MTU,

You were right about needing to get doc early, that’s his most vulnerable time. Once he gets in a groove, he’s really tough. I think the big man might have his 2010 coming out party tonight though.

  57. The Philly Phitins June 15th, 2010 at 10:22 am

    Patrick, Erin

I rely on cold hard baseball facts, you can stay with your pipe dreams, and divination.

    Go Phitins!

  58. stuckey June 15th, 2010 at 10:23 am

He looks to be better hot again at just the right time. Would love to see that OPS creep over that .800 mark during the summer. Guy hit 9 homers in the power-sapping Eastern League last year.

  59. MTU (aka GBURL) June 15th, 2010 at 10:24 am

    Blake-

I hope so but in the meantime let’s keep as much pressure on the Phillies as we can by being agressive and making things happen.

Can’t expect Doc to cough up many long balls.

If they give us an inch we need to take a mile. :)

  60. stuckey June 15th, 2010 at 10:25 am

“So given that, as well as the Yankees lack of upper level outfield talent, wouldn’t it make sense to work Nunez in LF? If he’s athletic enough to adapt to the position he certainly has a bat that would play out there.”

His bat while good, is good for a SS, it does not project to the outfield. His value in maximed at that position.

And exactly who is he knocking outta the outfield in the next 3 years?

  61. Bronx Jeers June 15th, 2010 at 10:26 am

So come on and make some noise if you’re planning on attending the big rap concert-doubleheader this September!!

    :crickets:

  62. blake June 15th, 2010 at 10:26 am

    Chip,
When you have a guy that can hit that can play SS, then that’s where his highest value is. Same reason you don’t move Montero from catching until you’re sure he can’t. Reports are also saying that he’s playing much better defense this year. His value is significantly higher to both the Yankees and potential trade partners as a SS because there just aren’t that many good ones on planet earth.

  66. GreenBeret7 June 15th, 2010 at 10:28 am

Nunez’s defensive play at shortstop this year has been close to spectacular. That’s why he’s still playing shortstop.

  67. blake June 15th, 2010 at 10:30 am

Doc will probably wish he had came to NY when he’s watching the playoffs on TV this fall. He had better rotation mates in Toronto.

    ————————————————————————-

Chip: what you stated above, is what i wouldn’t do.

Nunez looks to be excellent Derek Jeter insurance.

4 years is a long time. Derek Jeter does not have 4 years left at SS.

if i were Cashman, i would offer Jeter 3 years and a player/team option. If Jeter doesn’t take it, let him walk

Nunez is the ONLY shortstop the Yankees have at the mid/upper levels

Me, too, Ray. He’s got a ton of talent, but, he always seemed to be hurt, and, I wasn’t sure that he was all that committed. If he could get straight, by next year, he might be able to offer NYYs what David Robertson gave them the last couple of years. Robertson and Park look a lot better lately, don’t they? Man, they can give the bullpen a huge lift.

Nunez is being vastly over-hyped on this blog. He’s good but not the great prospect many are making him out to be. He’ll never be the every day starter for the Yankees unless there’s an injury.

As I said yesterday he can hit for a high average but has minimal power, not a great base stealer, doesn’t have a great OBP and by all accounts is a terrible fielder.

    Chip June 15th, 2010 at 10:20 am

Hello Chip! Eduardo Nunez is playing a great SS this year. He seems to have vastly improved his defensive play and it has been speculated that Kellerher helped him. While his bat has always appeared to be ready, the great glove at SS makes him a big time prospect.

Eduardo Nunez serves two purposes right now. BU to Jeter if something serious happened to him and a terrific trade bait from a key position.

I know you know all this, but if Eduardo Nunez is moved to OF he is not a significant prospect anymore. I expect him to come up this year before Sept 1 if he isn’t traded and replace Pena as the backup SS. Russo would remain BU 3B, 2B & OF.
