Culver backs out of Maryland

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jun 16, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

As if there needed to be another indication that first-round pick Cito Culver plans to sign with the Yankees, the young shortstop sent a pretty clear signal this week.

According to my old friend Jim Mandelaro, Culver has backed out of his commitment to the University of Maryland and will travel to the Yankees minor league complex tonight. It’s a three-day visit, and Culver told Mandelaro that he’s not sure what’s on the schedule other than a physical.

By my count, that leaves only two steps: Agreeing on money and finding a working ink pen. I like the Pilot G-2, but whatever’s handy should work.

Culver can’t officially sign until the graduates from high school. That’s happening on Sunday.

    86,

I agree with your sentiment but want to add that I’m kinda glad Nick Johnson is on the shelf.

He was batting .167 and showing zero signs of life.

That was just an awful signing by Cashman.

Thames/Miranda is a miserable DH platoon IMHO.

    ps

    Cito looks like Jeter.

The Pilot G-2 is a fine product. I’m a big fan of the 05 model, myself.

    Chad,

Can you get us an updated scouting report on David Phelps’ stuff? He’s been tearing it up this yr.

    How exciting for Culver!!

I’m really hoping for a win tonight-I think it would make a very nice birthday present. ;)

Tampa may trade for Lee knowing they get picks for him when he leaves & they can rent him cheaply for part of a year’s salary. Rays like to do that kind of part year thing!

Rays have enough talent in their pool to not miss them.

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

Ray, I’d think that Seattle would want Hellickson or Davis, Brignac and more from Tampa, don’t you think? I can’t see them taking Bartlett over Brignac. Not sure if Tampa has a catcher in the system and it’s doubtful they’d include Desmond Jennings. That would surely be the asking price.

About like finding a winning Lotto ticket in your backyard.

I refuse to call him “Cito” unless he hits like Jeter. If not, he’s just Chris. :)

Yea, Seattle is going to want a pretty good haul for Lee..otherwise they’d be better off just taking the picks. I don’t see the need in Tampa matching up with what it would cost to get him…you never know though.

    I can just imagine Cito’s friends now…

They go off to college to go to school and meet girls, mostly to meet girls. They invite those girls into their freshman dorms and say, “Check out my lava lamp”.

Meanwhile, Cito has a revolving door in his bedroom and he’s like “Check out my contract from the New York Yankees. 1 million dollar signing bonus…”

    It’s so unfair it’s absurd.

  26. SJ44 June 16th, 2010 at 9:26 am

Tampa isn’t trading for Lee. They don’t need another starting pitcher and they can’t take on another 4+ million in salary.

I talked about this a few weeks ago on the blog and Buster Olney hightlighted it in his blog yesterday, teams don’t have a lot of money to put toward players on the trade market.

Some teams are at or over their budgets. Others, due to their debt ratios, simply can’t add any more salary to their team.

These deals are now being made by CFO’s rather than GM’s because, if the bankers say “no”, you can’t add more debt to your team.

That’s why its going to be tough to make deals for many teams during the next six weeks. The extra money just isn’t there for most teams.

A team to watch for Lee……the Reds.

They have the prospects, the need, and the available money to take on a rental like Lee.

    MTU,

The Yankees pitching in the minors is taking huge steps lately. With Brackman starting to pitch real well and the return of Betances (another great start last night) added to Warren, Phelps, Stoneburner, Ramirez, Nova, etc… Their pitching depth is kind of crazy. And that doesnt count the HS kids from last yr that will get their debut in short season ball (like De Luca) and the kids drafted this yr.

  30. JM June 16th, 2010 at 9:28 am

I used to love when Scooter would be rhapsodizing about some pasta or a cannoli he had had at a restaurant the previous night and miss some important play on the field.

  31. DB June 16th, 2010 at 9:28 am

Sounds like the kid is going to sign with the Yanks while he still has his cap and gown on.

Love the Pilot G-2, I use the G-2 Pro myself. It’s got a wider grip and just a little heavier.

However, don’t you bust out the Mont Blanc on occassions like this?

  32. GreenBeret7 June 16th, 2010 at 9:28 am

Boston is really the only AL East team that has a real need for Lee, and, I’m not sure that they have the right MLB ready players to satisfy Seattle’s needs. The only way Boston could match up is involving a 3rd team, but, most of their prospects are AA and lower.

    Blake,

Seattle is in a tough spot with Lee. They aren’t a lot of landing places for him for money reasons.

No team is giving up too much for a rental.

Basically, if its even a marginal upgrade over the two draft picks he would get, he has to deal him.

If he can’t get that, Lee could end up staying in Seattle all year.

  36. Noreaster June 16th, 2010 at 9:32 am

Seattle picked the wrong year to ‘go for it’. I don’t see them getting anywhere near value for Lee with him being a ‘rent a player’. Maybe I’m wrong, but the big spenders seem to all have solid starting staffs. Plus Tampa, with all their picks, are pretty solid also. Looking at the standings, I can’t figure out 1 team, let alone 2 teams to create a bidding war, who would give up the package necessary to get him.

  37. Noreaster June 16th, 2010 at 9:33 am

  38. CountryClub June 16th, 2010 at 9:34 am

The teams that could use Lee the most are the Mets and Phillies. I’m not sure either is willing to take on the money, though. Plus, it would take huge baseballs for the Phils to admit they messed up. But, if I were them, I would do it. Win while you have the window.

  39. blake June 16th, 2010 at 9:34 am

    SJ,
If it becomes apparent that Beckett’s injuries are going to continue to be an issue for the rest of the season, can you see Boston getting involved for Lee? Thanks.

    Happy Birthday Erin!

Hope yours is as good as mine was yesterday!

SJ is dead on about the baseball economics. Not much financial flexibility for deal making and most trades may have to be $$$ neutral for the remainder of this year… or for the years ahead.

I also think Lee will find that he will be fortunate to get a Lackey/Burnett type of deal. Yes, he’s better than both, but it’s a different world out there. Similarly Brett Gardner might end up costing Carl Crawford millions.

  44. Chip June 16th, 2010 at 9:39 am

    Cliff Lee trade:

Brewers get Lee; Mariners get Mat Gamel.

The Brewers are desperate for pitching, that division (and the Wild Card) are winnable, and they’ve gone down this road before (CC Sabathia)

Mariners get a prospect who should add some power to their lineup and give them a solid 3b going forward.

  45. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes June 16th, 2010 at 9:39 am

I think it is a bad idea to start ARod tonight. They should give him a week off and let him come back against the Mets on Friday or Saturday.

I want him back in the lineup as badly as the next guy does, but he is crucial to our stretch run and if there is any discomfort whatsoever, the risk right now is not worth it.

Cliff Lee just likes to travel.

He has been from one end of the country to the other in search of a home.

NY is a very interesing, lucrative, and cosmopolitan place.

It would make a good home for a wealthy ballplayer don’t you think ?

And then in the off season him and AJ just hop his jet back to Arkansas to go all hillbilly again. :)

  50. Noreaster June 16th, 2010 at 9:41 am

    Blake,

I don’t think the Sox have what it takes in their minors to get a Lee. They would have to dip down to AA and best and probably high A. I don’t see them making that kind of deal for a 3 month player. I would have said that they still need a bat, but their offense has been on fire.

Boston’s hands are simply tied. They don’t have major league ready prospects to dangle in a deal. Ellbury’s value has lessened. Cameron is old and hurt and along with Lowell, doesn’t fit any team’s needs.

Their only real trading chip is Buchholz and with the uncertainty of Beckett, Matsuzaka, and Wakefield they must hold onto him.
Boston will wear themselves out with the kind of talent they have. With a heavy road schedule coming up, they’ll just slowly fade into the distance. Without making an actual statement, their thoughts are on what the roster will look like in 2011

“I had no idea that the Manchester was becoming so rare.
Why is the population shrinking ? Disease problem ?”
    ————————————————————-

    MTU:

it is interesting. I had purchased a Manchester Terrier in 1992. At the time, there were few breeders, and had to drive from South Carolina to Virginia, to pick him up.

aside from the Manchester being a wonderful pet/dog, i did make one observation at various dog shows back at that point in time. It seemed the Manchester Terrier breeders i talked with and no interest in the breed becoming more “popular”. In fact, they indicated that the breed being relatively unknown, was a “positive”.

fast-forward to 2010. There are even less Manchester breeders, then before. And very few (if any) puppies available. Last year, there were only 350 Manchester’s registered

at one time the breed was very common in United Kingdom. However, the advent of the anti-cropping (ears) in England, instantly relegated the dog unpopular. In the US, it is a relative mystery. Disease is not a factor. I believe it have to do with no steps ever being taken by the American Clubs and breeders, to make the breed known. And at the very least, to make dogs available to meet any demand.

Mat Gamal is a DH. He can’t play a position on the field adequately. Why would the Mariners trade for a DH prospect? They would be better off taking the draft picks.

I think the Red Sox would have to get a third team involved for Lee. It seems to me their budget it pretty filled on the pitching front.

The first two videos on this page are of Brandon Laird’s 3 run homer last night. The first isn’t very good, but, the 2nd is and especially the swing. The ball went out to left center.

Laird now leads all of pro baseball in RBI with 62 in 62 games. still hitting over .300 and his homers are 1 less than the leader and doubles are 4 less. He also leads in hits and 1 less than the league leader in runs scored and 7th in BA. All in all, not bad for a 27th round pick..

  74. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes June 16th, 2010 at 9:52 am

I don’t know why any of us should be concerning ourselves with Cliff Lee right now.

Any high profile player that might be traded inevitably gets linked somehow with the Yankees, however ludicrous the scenario actually is.

We don’t need Lee and we don’t need to pay the absurd asking price Seattle will demand for his services. The Yankees didn’t do it for Santana, Sabathia, or Halladay. They’re not doin it for Cliff Lee.

Who knows where he’ll wind up? Perhaps Tampa will go after him…how can anyone be certain?

The Yankees’ needs are scant at this point. We can always look to improve our bullpen and bench, especially the latter if there is even the slightest possibility that ARod’s hip flexor/groin is worse than he is letting on.

  75. blake June 16th, 2010 at 9:52 am

Reason I ask is related to what SJ said about the economic situation in baseball. Not many teams could to add Cliff. Therefore Seattle may be forced to take a trade involving lesser prospects than it normally would take. The Sox may not have the prospects under normal conditions but in the current economic climate I thought they may.

  76. Chip June 16th, 2010 at 9:52 am

    SJ

Mariners aren’t just starved for a power bat, they are famished for one. Gamel is only 23 and has 130 PA – to me that means he’s still a prospect – and he’s a better power prospect than anyone the Mariners have; in fact, he might be the best power bat on the Mariners today.

  77. CountryClub June 16th, 2010 at 9:53 am

Just to play devil’s advocate: Every year we talk about how much some team is going to get for a certain player in a trade. And every year we overestimate what the package ends up being. Teams always ask for the moon at the start of negotiations, but in the end, they usually take a package that doesnt justify the trade.

Jorge has an on going tease with Mariano for teaching Halladay his cutter, as if he needed more pitches in his arsenal.

I say THANK YOU Mariano, because Doc’s cutter scored runs last night, it helped the Yankees win.

Mariano still helped his team win even though he never entered the game, Halladay’s cutter was flat.

  114. Patrick aka Brostradamus June 16th, 2010 at 10:18 am

It seems like Arizona is in sell everything mode. I read a rumor that they are willing to trade anyone other than Upton and Kennedy. So you can add Dan Haren to the list of #1 starters available for trade.

The only problem with the trade market for Oswault/Haren/Lee is that not many teams will be in on any of them. The Yanks don’t need pitching. The Sox don’t need pitching unless Beckett keeps getting injured. The Dodgers can’t make a trade for money reasons. Ditto the Rangers. I’ve heard rumors the Mets are having money issues as well but there’s nothing public about that at the moment.

I could see the Phillies, Reds, Twins being legitimate contenders for one of the big three pitchers that will be available. Teams that might have interest include the Mets, Tigers, Braves and Rockies. Teams that you’d think would have interest based on their record but aren’t for real and shouldn’t be buyers are the Blue Jays and Padres.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Not many teams can take on Oswault’s salary, but then again Ed wade is a moron and will probably agree to pay it all.

  115. Patrick June 16th, 2010 at 10:19 am

  117. 86w183 June 16th, 2010 at 10:20 am

Meatloaf was “Eddie” in the Rocky Horror Picture Show”

Can’t even estimate the number of midnight showings of that movie I saw in college. It was on every Friday and Saturday night at a local theater and it was quite an event with water pistols, dancing in the audience and hollering out lines/responses

Also a great deal of (non-tobacco) smoking

The definition of a cult flick, though I NEVER dressed up.

GB 7 — How is Laird coming along defensively? Can he play a serviceable 3B? LF?

To me the one thing the Yanks most need is a 4th OF/DH type to lengthen the lineup and strengthen the bench. DeJesus and Wigginton fit the bill, though I’m not sure about Wiggy in the OF. Look at this roster with Wiggy/DeJesus replacing Russo/Moeller.

Can’t imagine the prige tag on those two would be all that high, but you never know. Also dunno if Hal would take on those salaries… combine they have about $ 4 M coming the rest of the year.

  118. Chip June 16th, 2010 at 10:21 am

    Patrick,

I read that about Arizona too. I still don’t think they’ll deal Haren during the season, but Peter Gammons was on WFAN yesterday saying that over the winter they are going to have to drop 20 mil in payroll.

I was thinking how about this:
    Sign Cliff Lee
Trade this winter for Dan Haren

Go into 2011 with a rotation of: CC, Haren, Lee, AJ, Hughes

86, Laird’s defense took about a 2 week hit, but, mainly careless errors. He’s never played the outfield unless it was high school/little league. I don’t know just how much the conditions of the lower minor leagues have to do with infield play, but, I’m sure that the conditions aren’t the best. Right now, he has work to do on defense, whatever the reason is.

    ********

I’m leaning that way as well. I’m not convinced the Yankees are fully prepared to undue all their investments in grooming Joba to start.

I also think it’s possible Lee would take an over-market extension if offered and therefore a team who trades for him might be able to lock him up before he reaches free agency.

You know my stance on Andy – so let’s stay away from that argument :-)

As for Joba; I think he seems at peace with his role in the pen. If you have a chance listen to the interview he gave to Francessa the other day. He was saying that he enjoys just going out there for an inning and letting it fly.

I just don’t see him back in the rotation.

Also, with the way Swisher and Gardner are playing I don’t think the Yankees are going to make a major play for an outfielder which would open up the payroll for them to focus on the rotation.

Something else to consider – signing Lee and trading for Haren would provide the club with insurance for when/if CC opts out of his contract after next season

Ray, I?d think that Seattle would want Hellickson or Davis, Brignac and more from Tampa, don?t you think? I can?t see them taking Bartlett over Brignac. Not sure if Tampa has a catcher in the system and it?s doubtful they?d include Desmond Jennings. That would surely be the asking price.

I agree GB! Tampa is so loaded that they could really sway Seattle quickly. Yanks can’t go that high IMO. I really like Brignac, who was left out of the top 100 by Laws. If I’m Tampa I think I give up Hellickson & Brignac and ask for a throw in BP arm from Seattle.

Seems to me the purpose of having an opt out is to improve your contract situation. If CC opts out I don’t think anyone would come close to the $23MM/ year the NYY pay him. Theoretically, the NYY could offer him less if he opts out. Plus I believe he is happy in NY.

  161. MTU (aka GBURL) June 16th, 2010 at 10:41 am

    Ray-

IMO TB would be absolutely idiotic to trade those 2 guys for a rental of Lee.

They can’t afford him long term and the potential that Hellickson, in particular, brings would make that potential trade a fool’s errand, and that would be being nice. ;)

    GreenBeret -

Just going with what is written:

The Yankees released David Winfree from their Triple A team, according to Donnie Collins of the Times-Tribune.
    ?????????????????????-
They only released him because of his opt out clause.

I?m sure they will announce who added him to their 40Man roster soon.
    ——————————-

    Possibly very true.

Either way, with both Winfree and Cusick sent out – sounds like the Scranton Yankees will be getting two new additions. I wonder if they are guys who are getting promoted (Laird?) or guys who are coming in from other organizations (Joe Crede?)

    Bret,

Niese is pretty good but his stuff isn’t really anything special. He is a legit major league starting pitcher though.

I think the Mariners would probably demand Mejia, Flores or F-mart. And the Mets shouldn’t trade any of those guys for a half year rental IMO
    ******

I agree that the Mets won’t deal any of their top chips for a rental…so they might try to throw crazy money at Lee to keep him off the open market. 5 years, 100 mil or 6 years 100 mil.

They could easily decline their 11 million option on Reyes for 2011 or try to trade Beltran. Even if they do neither, Beltran comes off the books after 2011. That’s 18.5 million.

    Cliff Lee fits their budget.

  164. RayVT June 16th, 2010 at 10:42 am

    GB

Desmond Jennings is untouchable unles the Rays find $100M influx of cash from somewhere to re-sign Crawford. Desmond Jennings is awesome prospect & at 6′-2″ & 180 Lbs he has a frame to add 25 to 50 Lbs of muscle & not miss a beat. That would make him a power hitting OF IMO.

Patrick – you forgot your Brostradamus tag when you made all those predictions! How will they come true now?!

And anyone that thinks Cliff Lee isn’t testing the market is ca-razy! 1st – he has already stated (when he was still with the Phillies no less!) that he plans to test the market. 2nd – he’ll be the best pitcher in the market, regardless of how poor the economy is. 3rd – a poor baseball economy and a poor national economy are two different things, so while testing free agency might *only* mean a difference of a few million here or there I’d bet it would still be tempting enough to check, wouldn’t it be for you folks??

    Patrick/Bret/MTU,

I was totally on the Joba the starter bandwagon, but I’m coming the realize that his inconsistant MPH plays a lot better in the pen than as a starter. Maybe if he really started working out more and got himself in to better shape he could play in the rotation, but I just feel mentally and physically he’s better off in the pen.

Yeah but I don’t think the Yankees will offer him less and by opting out he may get an extra year or two on the back end of the contract. For example his current deal runs through 2015, maybe he opts out and his new deal goes until 2017 at the same price…that’s an extra 50 mil in his pockets.

  169. Patrick June 16th, 2010 at 10:44 am

    Chip,

I don’t recall your stance on Pettitte. Do you think he’s going to break down?

    Bret,

I’m no expert but this is what I see with Haren. His ERA is high but his FIP is 3.97, xFIP 3.26. Both show us that his ERA is inflated for reasons somewhat out of his control.

His GB rate is the same as usual – 43.5% (absurdly good), his LD% is even lower than usual at 17.2%.

His BB/9 is 1.6 (awesome as usual), his K/9 is up at 9.13 which is even higher than his career average.

BABIP is .345 and he has a career .302 BABIP which tells me a lot of bloop hits are getting through.

His HR to fly ball ratio is way up at 15.2% and is mostly the reason he’s been getting bad results. I think a lot of that is just due to luck based on a few things. His peripherals as I’ve shown all look good and if you look at his PitchFX numbers, he’s throwing with the same velocity and break as he usually does.

  170. Patrick June 16th, 2010 at 10:45 am

My handle still indicates some degree of hope for Joba as a starter but I have to say the light is growing dim.

I was in Tampa a few weeks ago and the owner there stated he was okay with accepting a part-year salary to boost TB over the top. He didn’t want anything long-term mind you. I believe Lee was the guy he had in mind to anchor that young staff. Also, it would solve another problem of a BP guy as a SP would move there. TB is having somewhat better fan support this year and I think TB will pursue Lee. (Note they get compensation picks too off that rental.)

It’s amazing how many bad trades he’s been involved in.

Then he went to the Padres with Chris Young for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka – that one’s gotta sting.

    ———————-

This is why I didn’t want to get into it. It came up the other day, long story short: Winter before the 2008 season the Yankees put a contract on the table for Andy after the season, he says he “needs time” to decide if he wants to come back. MLB announces that they are going to make public the list of names on the Mitchell Report, Andy jumps almost immediately at the contract, two days later his name is listed. Not the actions of a man. In my opinion a man turns to Cashman and says “look, I want to accept this deal, but you need to know, this is about to happen.”

It’s a personal opinion, one I know is not popular with others. But I don’t find anything insane about it – and it certainly doesn’t make me less of a Yankee fan.

  195. champ809 June 16th, 2010 at 11:01 am

Releasing Winfree I think allows the Yanks to add Jorge Vazquez to the 40 man and he may get a call up in a month if he mashes at AAA he hit a 440ft homer monday night and the kid has a real real power bat.

Laird could possibly move to corner OF in the future and I know the Yanks talked about getting him out there after last season but he’s stayed in the infield so far…at this rate though he’s going to be in demand come trade deadline time…

For all the Yanks minor league pitching that’s killing right now we still have Banuelos,Cotham,Brett Marshall,DeLuca and Brayan Mitchill who haven’t even started their seasons yet and those 5 are 5 of the top guys in the whole organization….

As I said in the offseason we’d see just how stacked our farm really is this year as a # of guys where poised tp breakout this season pitchers as well as position players. If you look up and down the rosters you see the names starting to really make names for themselves…

Newman and oppenheimer have done an outstanding job with the farm the last 5 years. Kudos!

    Tom,

Brian (and the Yankees) are entitled to that opinion, it doesn’t mean I have to agree. I’m not trying to change anyone’s opinion. I’m simply stating that I would be fine with it if the Yankees let Andy walk after the season – especially if they use the money/roster spot to bring in a younger, equally capable pitcher such as Dan Haren.

    ———————————————-

I thought that Pettite used it in 2002 when he was down in Tampa trying to come back from injuries. I remember he was hurt throughout the first half of the season and then came back in the second half and was dominant. That would put him on the Yanks.

  230. Wave Your Hat June 16th, 2010 at 11:12 am

There is no evidence to show HGH improves athletic performance. The most recent Harvard studies state flatly HGH does not improve athletic performance.

If there were a baseball rule against crossing your fingers and spinning around before pitching, and a pitcher broke it, it would help him about as much as taking HGH does. Breaking a rule which doesn’t give you a competitive edge isn’t a terrible sin in my book.

    Andy Pettitte philanderer?? What?

Actually the Nats do have the players to make it happen…

drafting Harper makes the Nats top prospect Derek Norris expendable and they have Jesus Flores coming back to play C for 2 yrs until Harper’s ready…

so if the start Zimmerman the SP/Norris power hitting C a need for the Pads/Morse who can play 1B and maybe another high ceiling OF prospect they’d I’m sure be in the mix….

The RedSux would have to counter with Bucholtz/Ellsbury/Kelly and maybe Lars to get him…

I would like to be clear about something:

Yes, Page 6 might not be the New York Times as far as accuracy, but then I’d like someone else to explain why Andy wasn’t a career Yankee. The ‘official’ story reads that the Yankees just didn’t want him enough (yet decided to pay bank for an older version of Andy). So I’d like to hear how the Yankee fans on the board rationalize that with a theory that makes sense (spending time with the kids?? Really??! Just for the 3 years??).

I think Jose Canseco belongs in the Hall of Fame

    NOT AS A PLAYER

But for what he did to unleash this new wave of testing.

The Hall is not just for players – it is for people who have impacted the sport in a significant way. Well can anyone other than Bud Selig claim to have had a greater impact on the overall sport than Canseco has with his book and the fallout that followed?

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
