YANKEES (41-24)
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez DH
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Brett Gardner LF
Francisco Cervelli C
Ramiro Pena 3B

LHP Andy Pettitte (8-1, 2.46)
Career vs. Phillies

PHILLIES (33-30)
Shane Victorino CF
Chase Utley 2B
Placido Polanco 3B
Ryan Howard 1B
Jayson Werth RF
Raul Ibanez LF
Ben Francisco DH
Carlos Ruiz C
Wilson Valdez SS

RHP Kyle Kendrick (3-2, 4.80)
Career vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m. / YES Network and MLB Network

UMPIRES: HP Tom Hallion, 1B Wally Bell, 2B Lance Barksdale, 3B Ed Rapuano

WEATHER: Temperatures in the 70s. Cloudy but not much chance of rain.

GOOD MATCHUP: Andy Pettitte hasn’t faced this group of Phillies very often, but Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jayson Werth are a combined 3-for-29 against the Yankees starter. In last year’s World Series, Pettitte allowed a total of two hits to that Phillies trio. Both were home runs.

ONE AND DONE: Mark Teixeira is the only Yankees batter to have faced Kyle Kendrick. Teixeira is 1-for-12 with a home run, two walks and a strikeout.

LOCKED WHEN LOADED: With the bases loaded, the Yankees lead the majors in batting average (.429), at-bats (84), hits (36), grand slams (6), RBI (99), walks (11) and on-base percentage (.490).

MORE LOCKED WHEN LOADED: Francisco Cervelli is 6-for-8 with the bases loaded this season. His 15 RBI with the bases loaded are second in the majors behind Alex Rodriguez, who has 16 bases-loaded RBI.

UPDATE, 7:20 p.m.: Scoreless through one. Both Pettitte and Kendrick sent the side down in order. Three batters put the ball in play. Three struck out.

UPDATE, 7:24 p.m.: By striking out Jayson Werth, Pettitte passed Ron Guidry for second place on the Yankees all-time strikeouts list. Pettitte has 1,779 Ks as a Yankee.

UPDATE, 7:56 p.m.: Looked like Ramiro Pena expected the ball to take a little bit of a hop there and it never happened. The ball stayed low, got under his glove and Ryan Howard took advantage of the error with an RBI single. It’s now 1-0 Phillies with two on and one out in the fourth.

UPDATE, 8:15 p.m.: Shane Victorino wasn’t the best player I ever covered in Scranton — that was Chase Utley — but he certainly had the best all-around season I ever covered in Scranton. He’s a really nice player, and he just took Pettitte deep for a 3-0 Phillies lead.

UPDATE, 8:24 p.m.: The Yankees really haven’t been able to get anything going against Kendrick. A two-out, fifth-inning single by Francisco Cervelli was the first hit since Robinson Cano’s single in the second inning.

UPDATE, 8:50 p.m.: Robinson Cano — who else? — just had a two-out RBI single to put the Yankees on the board, cutting the lead to 3-1. Here comes Swisher with two on and two outs in the sixth.

UPDATE, 8:52 p.m.: Well that’s just a nice play by Polanco. His catch along the tarp has ended the inning, still a 3-1 Phillies lead.

UPDATE, 9:10 p.m.: Big time pitching by Pettitte to get out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam here in the seventh. You’ll be shocked to learn that Cervelli was pumped!

UPDATE, 9:24 p.m.: Here comes Dave Robertson to relieve Pettitte. Kendrick has worked another scoreless inning to keep it 3-1 after seven.

UPDATE, 9:50 p.m.: The Phillies let the No. 9 hitter swing away, and it resulted in an RBI single through the drawn in infield. It’s now 4-1 Phillies. Marte getting loose in the bullpen.

UPDATE, 10:05 p.m.: Sac fly makes it 5-1. The Yankees have scored three four runs since Tuesday. They now need four runs in the ninth.

UPDATE, 10:07 p.m.: Another sac fly makes it 6-1. The Yankees now need five runs in the ninth.

UPDATE, 10:14 p.m.: Oh boy. There’s an RBI double off Chan Ho Park and it’s now 7-1. That escalated quickly!

UPDATE, 10:17 p.m.: I have no idea what that conversation was like among the umpires, but at some point, someone should have asked this question: Is there anyway Jeter would have misplayed the ball that badly without it hitting the runner?

hopefully its not the kind of night when yankees never faced the pitcher and struggle for most of the game and come back and lose by 1 or 2. Big series win tonight would be nice with momentum into the subway series part 2 vs the red-hot mets!

Can anybody here confirm the MLB Network broadcast is simply the YES Feed or
will it be Costas/Katt in the booth?

If anyone needs a stream of the game, I am broadcasting using WCBS so click the link above

The MLB feed, which I am reduced to, is neither the YES feed nor Costas/Kaat, it’s Matt Vasergian (sp?) and Smoltz.

Alex is 5-10 with a BB with the bases loaded this year. 2 GS.

His OBP is .500 which would suggest a sac fly in there too.

Here’s my theory on the 3 catcher situation.

Montero will be up next year with Cervelli as the backup.

After next season, Posada’s gone, Montero shifts to primary DH with Romine as the primary C and Cervelli still as the back up

Eventually I think Montero winds up at 1b (he’ll be 27 I think when Tex’s contract runs out)
    ************

It’s possible but if other teams value Montero as a full-time catcher rather than DH and Cervelli as a starting catcher rather than backup, those player might be worth more as trade chips.

    That’s why I think it’s possible only 1 of the 3 remains a Yankee.

  8. GreenBeret7 June 17th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Rishi, Rodriguez is 5-10 with 1 walk, 2 homers and 1 sac fly with bases loaded

  9. S.o.S. June 17th, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Hope this Kendrick guy throws harder than 79 mph fastballs. I think we were put to sleep yesterday. That or the ball had some oil on it.

  10. GreenBeret7 June 17th, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Montero is not going to be the primary catcher in 2011. As long as Posada is healthy and effective, he will be the primary catcher (85-100 games) with Cervelli backing up (late innings and if Montero is ready he will catch 40-50 games and DH.

I don’t know why, but I found this excerpt of an Andande chat pretty hilarious:

    J. A. Adande:
I was in Madison Square Garden for Game 5 of the NBA Finals…..and I can’t tell you a single thing that happened in the game. I was transfixed on the small TV monitor by my seat, watching OJ in the Bronco

    J. A. Adande:
I hope you watched it all the way till the end, when they played the clip of the guy asking Pat Riley “If OJ cuts left, do you think he makes it?” Somehow a fan got into the interview area, and beer in hand he asked that question. Mike Lupica was furious and chased the guy down

    J. A. Adande:
That’s one of my distinct memories from that night.

  13. Nick in SF in Larkspur June 17th, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Hey, S.o.S., good to see you too, though NSF continues to look like NSFW to my lazy eyes.

Aside from some kind of unprecedented double-forfeit, I still don’t know what to root for in the Finals tonight… ugh. No way out.

Have you completed your move from the fire back into the frying pan yet?

  14. Nick in SF in Larkspur June 17th, 2010 at 7:13 pm

m, this has nothing to go with anything, but I was at the Giants/Orioles game on Monday night and I saw a guy wearing an O.J. Simpson USC jersey… you really don’t see that much anymore. I took a photo.

  15. S.o.S. June 17th, 2010 at 7:13 pm

    mel,
Game 7. I give the Lakers an 80% chance to win with the Celts missing their big man. Big baby is the key to the game. If he has a big game, Lakers are in trouble(aside from 2 of the big 3). Bynum is key to the Lakers. If he plays minutes, it will keep Rondo out of the paint. If not, its a totally different game.

  16. GreenBeret7 June 17th, 2010 at 7:14 pm

Evening, S.o.S. Doing well here. Great to see that you aren’t blaming the regs for the trolls. Hopefully you’ll be around to help pick ‘em off.

  17. m June 17th, 2010 at 7:17 pm

    Nick,

lol. Some people have no shame!

    SoS,

I’ll revisit your comments after the game.

swbyankeesTT The Yankees have signed veteran infielder Eric Bruntlett to a minor-league contract. He will be activated tonight by SWB and start at 3B.

  20. S.o.S. June 17th, 2010 at 7:18 pm

    Nick(formally NSF),
Yes!! Finally made the move back to Temecula last weekend. I closed my business down and want to take my time looking for a new line of work. Want to take the family out this summer and coach both of them in pop warner football. The bad part about it i guess(hope the wife isnt reading this) is we spend ALL DAY together and never get a chance to get in here like i did when i had to go to work. Damned if i work, damned if i dont.

    Miss being here fellas.
GO CELTICS!! Never thought i would ever commit a mel and root for a boston team.

  21. Bret the Hitman June 17th, 2010 at 7:21 pm

    Go Celtics.

No one handles them better than you my friend. The human fly/troll swatter.

  25. Nick in SF in Larkspur June 17th, 2010 at 7:28 pm

ha, I only took the photo while the guy had his back to me. Unfortunately, he had his son (!) on his back so the jersey is partially obscured. But enough is visible.

Hope you get a chance to check in when convenient, S.o.S., we need more folks with a sense of humor and a clue around here.

  26. RS June 17th, 2010 at 7:28 pm

For a #5 hitter, Cano gets too many ABs with the bases empty.

  27. S.o.S. June 17th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

Alex shouldnt have bent to get that foul tip. Use the hip for Abombs instead.

  28. blake June 17th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

He just hits it hard almost every time.

  29. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos June 17th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

THat Cano, so boring – another hit.

  30. Rishi June 17th, 2010 at 7:30 pm

you just knew he was going to be the first to get a hit!

  31. SJ44 June 17th, 2010 at 7:30 pm

It doesn’t matter who is pitching, Robbie Cano still rakes.

He’s amazing to watch this year.

  32. kd June 17th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

    cano for mvp

  33. Bret the Hitman June 17th, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Did I mention that I own an original Modell’s Cano T-shirt with his original number 22 that he gave up when Clemens returned to the Yankees?

  34. S.o.S. June 17th, 2010 at 7:33 pm

Thanks NoCal. Im sure ill be back to normality soon. I see less regulars in here. They are either all moving their residence, miss my bad jokes or the trolls have been winning the battle.

    BTW,
LOST finally sucked. They played it safe. I put it in the same section as Supranos.

  35. GreenBeret7 June 17th, 2010 at 7:33 pm

I believe in the dont ask dont tell policy. Hes going to be tall and has green eyes. My thought is at least she had good taste in what mail man to deliver.

Its astounding that the Yankees have been so hot recently with the heart of the lineup playing so poorly. Granderson, Tex, and Rodriguez are all off their games right now. You’ve got to imagine they will catch fire at some point, as talented as they are.

  64. qiantom June 17th, 2010 at 7:48 pm

  65. Rishi June 17th, 2010 at 7:48 pm

  71. S.o.S. June 17th, 2010 at 7:52 pm

    SJ,
Thats good news, production wise. I have alot of respect for catchers. I played shortstop in little league and went to catching for a year. I have to say, your not catching if your not dinged up. My average dropped when playing behind the plate. It was exhausting and the foul tips to the toes and shoulders didnt help. He sounds like a natural with the bat and being related to sj, a good head on his shoulders. Hope you dont mind me asking from time to time.

Cant wait till my boy is in high school(2 more years) and is still consistantly dominant(middle linebacker). We moved next to a high school that just won the southern california championship this past year. So there will be lots of competition. I believe he will excell, but you never know. If not given the oportunity, your nothing special.

  72. george c. June 17th, 2010 at 7:53 pm

We are very fortunate to be able to get 1 out of 3 against the Phillies, considering we can’t seem to beat good teams.

  73. SAS June 17th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

    Doreen,

Yes, WP has really come alive since there has been so much construction downtown. There are lots of young people there too. You should be closer to her also, which is nice.

  74. JG29 June 17th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Cashman wake up and go get an infielder who could field and hit!

  75. Chris W June 17th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

If we are down by 2 runs, you know we aren’t coming back in the game.

  79. Chris W June 17th, 2010 at 7:55 pm

Pena’s really not looking like a major league utility infielder. He’s just not nearly a good enough hitter. That’s somewhere Cashman should look to upgrade.

  80. SJ44 June 17th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

    SOS,

    No problem, ask anytime.

The Yankees are losing 1-0. This place will now turn into a sewer with trolls, whiners and crybabies.

Time to exit for the evening.

  81. Terry from NH June 17th, 2010 at 7:57 pm

Andy Pettitte deserves another win and his ever declining era which is currently 2.37, but this dysfunctional offensive lineup sometimes goes into a funk.

  82. Chris S. June 17th, 2010 at 7:57 pm

I wonder what our record is against teams 500 or above….

  83. whatever June 17th, 2010 at 7:58 pm

When are the Yankees going to get a ShortStop who doesn’t stink in big games?

  84. Chris W June 17th, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Honestly, the Yankees have won multiple games this year where they looked barely conscious. If Pettitte pitches as well as he has, they will pull this one out.

  87. Terry from NH June 17th, 2010 at 7:59 pm

I can’t believe Pena is still on this team with his atrocious bat. In the future, and he is climbing fast, I want to see what Brandon Laird can do.

  88. Tarheelyank June 17th, 2010 at 7:59 pm

It doesn’t take much for people to show thier true colors, does it.

The lack of baseball knowledge seems to become so apparent when there is any kind of adversity for the team. Why is that?

  89. Chris S. June 17th, 2010 at 7:59 pm

Pena isn’t responsible for anything, but he’s yet to demonstrate a hitting ability that a championship-caliber team needs from their utility infielder, especially an old one like the Yankees. We need a guy that can hit enough to not be a total liability when asked to play for stretches of time. Honestly, Enrique Wilson fit that description in his prime. But Pena’s not even that good with the stick.

The pitching has usually been fine. The offense has been massively streaky, and I think a lot of that has to do with the injuries. The Yankees are a good team, and very capable of beating other good teams when everything is even average. That is hasn’t been at times, and the team has such a terrific record, demonstrates the overall quality of the team. This is virtually the same team that won a world series last year. You suppose they got there just by beating up bad teams? Yeah right.

  112. S.o.S. June 17th, 2010 at 8:07 pm

I love Andy!!.. He is great!.. One thing amazing about this year compared to his previous years… He is giving up wayyy less than 1 H per IP. If you look at his past, most seasons he was quite a bit over 1 H per IP. Actually, I was always amazed at how he managed to keep his ER figures relatively in control (though not as low as this year) even with the H per IP. Of course his BB/IP numbers are decent, but never have been fantastic.

….. Anyway… “Go Andy!!” Keep having a great season!!

    And come back next year!!!!

  123. kevin June 17th, 2010 at 8:13 pm

a-rod clogging up the lineup because he can only DH is not helping. if you can only help the team by hitting, HIT. coming back and only being able to DH and doing crap every game does nothing. not only that but a replacement then must play 3rd, and Pena has already struck out and made a costly error. this offense is so frustrating and far too streaky. how do you shell roy halladay and get shut down by jamie moyer and kyle kendrick? they need to wake up and score a couple runs off this bum.

sure the yanks have a great record. we know that. but in this division you can go on a 3 or 4 game losing streak and find yourself in 3rd place. it may not be fair that the 3rd place team in the East when it’s all said it done might have a better record than the leaders of other two divisions. but only 2 teams can make the playoffs from the East. the Yankees can’t afford any type of extended poor stretch this season is all likelihood.

Seriously, are any of you actually watching these last two games.

I’d like to see anyone say with a straight face to “tip their cap” to pitchers like Moyer and Kendrick. Moyer wasn’t that good last night, the Yankees just swung at nothing balls off the plate all night. Kendrick has an 89 mph flat sinker and that’s about it. Their ERA’s are in the high 4′s- low 5′s for a reason, almost EVERYONE else is hitting them, EXCEPT the Yankees.

  154. Chris S. June 17th, 2010 at 8:21 pm

5 hits in last 15 innings. Guess which team that is, the offensively challenged Phillies of the Yanks.

  155. Chris W June 17th, 2010 at 8:22 pm

The 6th inning will be telling. That’s the heart of the lineup. If they can’t deliver, the Yankees might be in trouble.

  156. kevin June 17th, 2010 at 8:22 pm

the phillies starting pitching is garbage outside of halladay. hamels is ok but he’s unreliable. after those 2 guys the talent takes a nose dive. blanton, moyer, and kendrick are all complete scrubs. after beating halladay the yanks should have swept this series considering it’s at home and the Phils have been awful. just because the Yankees have a great record this year doesn’t mean you can make excuses for them every single game.

I bet he is great again this weekend vs. us….

Even with the joke of an offense so far tonight, opponents are still hitting .267 off of Kendrick and he’s given up 9 HR. Again, his ERA is high for a reason, he really is a mediocre pitcher in the National League.

All of the good hitters are up there trying to pull the sinker, and all the bad ones are popping out because they are trying to slap it and have no power.

  170. Matt June 17th, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Yes, the Yankees have a great record because their pitching has been great.

But when their pitching isn’t lights out, they roll over and die for the most part.

Being down 3 runs at home is not game over, but with this team it feels like it’s 6 runs. They have not had the same ability to come back this year, and it’s not the injuries, it’s guys in the heart of the order like Teixeira who have killed a ton of crucial rallies.

You can’t keep citing last year to say that they will get it done offensively when they are behind in games. So far this year, they have really not been able to do it. That one game in Toronto they were down 2 runs and had been shut out, so that wasn’t really a huge comeback, even though it felt like it because they were so terrible before that.

Last year there were a ton of games they were down 4 or 5 runs early and came back and made it a 1 or 2 run game right at the end. They haven’t done that this year because they haven’t been scoring early in games. When the bullpen comes in and you are down 5 runs, it’s too late.

  174. JM June 17th, 2010 at 8:27 pm

The offense has been inconsistent from time to time this year. I attribute it at least in part to all the injuries. There are a lot of weak spots in the line-up at the moment and when they fall behind the big hitters seem to try to do too much.

You’d think that the big “GAME 66″ written up at the top of the blog might encourage some people to realize that there is a ton of baseball left to be played, and this series will be a distant memory in a month or two. But apparently it doesn’t.

It’s not ‘making excuses’ to not condemn the Yankees offense for a poor showing. The offense is the one part of this team that you know will always get going eventually. If the starting pitching was all Burnett-like, I’d be worried. If the bullpen was as terrible as it was earlier in the series, I’d be worried.

The bats always come around. The day the post-2000 Yankees lose the division because they can’t hit enough is the day hell freezes over.

I have no issue’s with the Yankees losing. I am sick of the whining and the trolls who come on here and polute a great baseball blog. Also I happen to think Andy Pettitte is a great Yankee and reading all this dribble infuriates me. So for as long as I feel like it if you post nonsense me (or Hector) will call you on it. capiche?”

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Who here has said anything about Andy Pettitte that is infuriating, all the comments I see reference the Yankees offense.

I really don’t care what you call or don’t call on, that is your issue.

Won’t stop Yankee fans from posting. If you don’t like it ignore it and get on with life. Its not the end of the world.

You know just like how people like to say that about the Yankees losing a game. Life goes on.

In a baseball forum you will find tons of differing views, that’s life.

Here’s a bold prediction for the night:

The Yankees will NOT get blanked

  195. Chris W June 17th, 2010 at 8:34 pm

Melky is having a terribly season for the Braves, so don’t bother with that. The Nick Johnson acquisition has been a complete disaster, there is little doubt of that. But the absence of Matsui and Damon is not what has killed the team. The problem is that A-Rod has been hitting well below his career averages, and Tex has been flat-out terrible. Cano and Gardner have both exceeded expectations, and can probably be counted on to continue playing at a high level. That’s a bit less true of Swisher, who is due for a slump at some point. Posada also needs to get in a groove and stay healthy.

Damon wanted a ridiculous contract, and the Yankees wisely did not give it to him. Matsui for Johnson was a more questionable decision.

  233. RS June 17th, 2010 at 8:49 pm

The biggest difference between this year and last year is homeruns. Last year the Yankees had 7 players with 20+ homeruns. This year they might have 4. Gardner and Cervelli have been outstanding but don’t provide any power.

The thing about homeruns is that you don’t want to rely on them too much, but it also makes it much easier to come from behind in games. When Tex and Arod are hitting 2 or 3 run bombs, the Yankees can make a 4-0 deficit 4-3 quickly and then the rest of the hitters can just relax and do their job. Once those two get their power stroke, the Yankees will have a much easier time coming back from deficits.

Teixeira is hitting .224 on June 17th. 2 and a half months and he still hasn’t turned it around. He’s not going to be this bad all season, but stop making excuses for it. He’s been TERRIBLE for much of this season, and we’ve been saying he’s “about to turn it around” for weeks and weeks now. How about he actually starts hitting for once?

If Teixeira is even hitting .250 or .260, the offense is completely different. Hard to score runs when the #3 spot in your lineup is a black hole.

Agree with RS about the lack of power, at least so far, compared to last year. It makes it much tougher to come back from large deficits when your line-up is lacking power. They don’t need Matsui and Damon back. They just need Tex and Arod to start hitting like the back of their baseball cards, Posada to stay healthy and Granderson to get on a roll.

Tex is the one who concerns me most since he has basically been in a funk since the start of the playoffs last year.

  284. RS June 17th, 2010 at 9:02 pm

The worst thing about getting shut down by Moyer and Kendrick is that if the Yankees were to face the Phillies in the WS, they probably wouldn’t even face those pitchers. The Phillies top 4 rotation is Halladay, Hamels, Happ, and Blanton. So you can’t even look at gaining experience against these guys as a consolation prize.

  285. YankFanCA June 17th, 2010 at 9:02 pm

And it appears Boston will be just 2 back of us after tonight

  286. Matt June 17th, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Well maybe if the guys at the top aren’t getting it done, we need to juggle the lineup a bit so our best hitters are coming up more often, right?

The Phillies just swapped Utley and Polanco and it looks like it’s given them a little bit of life here. Polanco is the only guy on that team hitting right now, so they are batting him 3rd in a crucial spot in the lineup.

Why do you keep running out a lineup with your worst hitter batting 3rd and your best 5th? Cano needs to bat behind the guys at the top who have typically been getting on base.

  293. RS June 17th, 2010 at 9:06 pm

“Who are these 2 Yankees on base when Tex and A-Rod are hitting these 3 run HRs you are looking for?”

Maybe Girardi should tweak the lineup then. Put Gardner leadoff and bat Jeter second. Gardner has what, the second or third highest OBP on the team? I don’t think Granderson is working at the top of the lineup because he and Teixeira back to back is pretty brutal. Grandy is good as a seventh or eighth guy because of his power, but his low OBP makes him unsuited to be at a premier run scoring position.

  294. Hector Lopez June 17th, 2010 at 9:07 pm

    # Matt June 17th, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Well maybe if the guys at the top aren’t getting it done, we need to juggle the lineup a bit so our best hitters are coming up more often, right?

The Phillies just swapped Utley and Polanco and it looks like it’s given them a little bit of life here. Polanco is the only guy on that team hitting right now, so they are batting him 3rd in a crucial spot in the lineup.

Why do you keep running out a lineup with your worst hitter batting 3rd and your best 5th? Cano needs to bat behind the guys at the top who have typically been getting on base.

    ===================================================

Make another call, Girardi awaits !!!

  310. RS June 17th, 2010 at 9:10 pm

The guys who get on base most consistently are Cano, Swisher, and Gardner.

Based on production, the Yankees lineup should look something like this:

    Gardner
    Swisher
    Cano
    Arod
    Posada
    Teixeira
    Granderson
    Jeter
    Cervelli

Now that’s obviously way too crazy of a change, but it says something when your top three consistent players bat in the bottom half of the actual lineup.

It’s funny, because if Howard were on the Yankees side, he would get screamed at for swinging at a ball.

But if he didn’t swing at it, Pettitte would get murdered for not throwing a strike.

It’s a LOSE-LOSE. But fortunately for these athletes they get paid millions of dollars, so I don’t feel bad for them one bit.

Why do you keep running out a lineup with your worst hitter batting 3rd and your best 5th? Cano needs to bat behind the guys at the top who have typically been getting on base.
    ———-
Paul O’Neill was routinely dropped to 7th by Torre when he wasn’t hitting. Girardi let’s his loyalty get it he way. Ever since Torre dropped Arod to 7th in the playoffs it’s considered a slap in the face to move any of the big guys in the lineup -ever.

  321. RS June 17th, 2010 at 9:12 pm

I’ll say it again. Andy is the pitcher I trust most with runners on base. I’ll even put him ahead of Rivera but maybe that’s only because Rivera pitching with baserunners is usually a do-or-die situation.

The Phillies are not a good team right now. Playing .300 over the past month. I guess because of the fact that the have an over .500 record has scared us and made us play badly like we have against .500+ teams in the last month.

And Joba kills any chance for the comeback.

This has to be the worst series loss of the season, by far. This team didn’t win a series in like what, 6 weeks? And they come into YS with Moyer and Kendrick like it is nothing and shut us down.

Ever since the Fenway Series in early May, this team has forgotten how to play baseball against good teams.

  430. Dylan June 17th, 2010 at 9:49 pm

    Yawn…

Who could have possibly guessed bad Joba would show up in a spot in which they could not afford to allow another run?

But again, when you score 1 run it doesn’t matter. After beating Halladay in the first game, there is absolutely no excuse AT HOME to lose this series, especially since the Phillies were not throwing Hamels in either of these 2 games.

Stop with this “well Boston is in 3rd place” stuff. Boston has a better record than us since the beginning of May. They were 6 games back a month ago and are now riding up our tails. The Yankees have to take care of their own business, because they have not been consistently doing so since the hot start.

    Since May 1:

    Red Sox: 29-15
    Yankees: 26-16

Stop talking about what the Yankees did in April. They are a different team right now than they were in April and have not played at the same level. They need to take care of their own business. They are lucky they had that insanely hot start, because otherwise they’d be the ones in 3rd place right now with how they’ve played at times.

  457. JK June 17th, 2010 at 9:56 pm

How many other teams can move into a tie for first place while dealing with the daily injury report the Yankees have to key players?

    Enough already.

You are boring and tiresome and a one trick pony.

I find it hard to believe you are a Yankees fan.

They scored 9 runs the other night.

So they had 2 slow nights here.

    So what?

So what if they lose a few more?

You drag this place down. You ONLY show up when they are losing and you ONLY point out negatives.

Guess what? The Yankees are goimg to lose some games. They might lose some games in a row. They are going to have players who are hot and players who slump. It’s baseball. It’s 162-game schedule. they’re not even half done.

  516. Matt June 17th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

    Doreen,

You really don’t get it. Again, where do I say that one or two games represents the entire season?

It’s pretty obvious this year that the offense has been inconsistent, and it’s guys like Teixeira who have dragged them down, not the injuries. Stating facts is not “bridge jumping” and “giving up on the season,” get over yourself.

They have played two terrible games. If they play 3 awesome games and sweep the Mets, that doesn’t change the fact that these games were incredibly terribly played. Facts are facts, stop putting words in my mouth.

When a guy’s ERA is over 5.00, it’s over 5.00 for a reason. Not hitting him is a failure, period. If a guy goes 0-5, he had a bad day. If he goes 2-3 the next day, that doesn’t all of a sudden mean his last day was a good day or even an average day.

Maybe people are mad because they’ve sat here for 3 hours and watched this garbage for each of the last two nights? Saying they aren’t fans is just ridiculous. They are just as much a fan as any of you because they actually sit there and watch the games unlike you guys, who just shrug it off and don’t care. Having some passion about your team is a huge indicator of fandom, how could it not be?

Maybe they are still watching the games because they think the team is good, but they are frustrated that they are inconsistent and not playing up to that level in many series? Maybe you aren’t the supreme overlord of all Yankees fans who has the right to criticize everyone who has a different way of reacting to things than you do? So you don’t get annoyed watching them play bad, good for you. The rest of us actually care enough to want to see our team win, and I’m sorry you aren’t enough of a fan to even give a damn whether they win or lose on a given night.

  517. ac1 June 17th, 2010 at 10:12 pm

  538. Nate June 17th, 2010 at 10:18 pm

The only difference between this team and the 2008 team is the 2008 offense sucked against everyone. The 2010 offense just sucks against good teams.

When is the last time we won a series against a .500+ team not named Minnesota?

  539. TMZ June 17th, 2010 at 10:19 pm

This is the Phillies team that scored ZERO runs against the Mets. We should have wiped up the floor with them. Instead, we only win one game. If Halladay hadn’t been off his game, we would have been swept. That is unacceptable.

  540. RSM June 17th, 2010 at 10:19 pm

People can make excuses all they want, but this Phillies team has been MISERABLE for the last month. They have been reeling. It’s pathetic to look this bad against them. We do have reason for concern. Posada and AROD are obviously not healthy, and Tex is unable to pick up the slack. Joba has been horrible. And we can’t win a series against any decent teams since the first week of May.

  541. The Phranchise June 17th, 2010 at 10:19 pm

Oh well. Hopefully they get it together for the Mets. Cano, Swisher and Gardner have been the only consistent bats all year. Eventually Tex and Arod have to start producing and Jeter needs to get back on track.

And Joba at the moment is Bruney. Good velocity, but you never know what you are getting. That eighth inning needs a consistent presence. That may be the biggest hole they need to fill.

And they are no longer drawing walks.

Certainly they miss the presence of Damon, Matsui and Melky.

    Matt -

I get it all right. It’s you who don’t get it. You want perfection. It’s baseball. It doesn’t exist. Even a “perfect” game is not perfect for the other team. Most players fail over 70% of the time. A winning team will lost about 40% of their games.

You have one song and you’ve sung it to death.

If you can’t take the downs with the ups, find somewhere else to complain about it.

I somehow think the people who run the Yankees know a little more than you do.

The Yanks must be decent enough with their bats to be second in the MLB in run differential. There are lots of different ways to win a game. You don’t need to score 5 runs a night, every night. You just need to score more than your opponent more times than not.

  565. mick June 17th, 2010 at 10:24 pm

Burnett is not = to 09 Burnett.

  566. Michelle June 17th, 2010 at 10:24 pm

Swish needs to bat 2nd. Granderson is a terrible #2 hitter, he doesn’t get on base enough to bat there. Granderson and Tex back to back is brutal. Also enough with the wheel play already. Girardi has tried it 3 times recently and it hasn’t worked in any of the times.

Last thing Joba needs to go to AAA. If his name wasn’t Joba and he was just some random pitcher signed to be the 8th inning guy he would be released or in triple AAA. I don’t know why he gets special treatment.

  573. blake June 17th, 2010 at 10:25 pm

    Matt,

Its amazing that you can’t manage to write one positive sentence about a team with the best record in baseball but yet somehow come up with endless paragraphs pointing out their flaws….really imaginative work.

  574. vblade June 17th, 2010 at 10:26 pm

Wait let me get this straight – the Yankees were the best team in baseball two days ago, and suddenly now they’re an inconsistent team that might miss the playoffs? I see the same team on the field, the only difference is that they had a bad two days. Calm down, kids.

  575. Matt June 17th, 2010 at 10:26 pm

Exactly, the Yankees have a good record but they aren’t playing like a 41-24 team the majority of these games.

A hot start has kept them in good position despite it, but eventually the excuses don’t mean anything and you have to start playing. It was the “injuries, “but even then you had Teixeira, Jeter, and A-Rod contributing almost nothing for a while. Then those same “injuries” were past and they still have been inconsistent.

Beating bad teams is nice, but they have been inconsistent. If you replace their excellent start with just a good one, they are in 3rd place right now.

The Yankees other than 2 of the last 18 innings have pretty much put up no fight whatsoever in these last 2 games. It’s just 2 games, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was a pathetic performance. Nowhere are we saying it will doom the season, but it was still a terrible job against a team that has been playing .333 ball or so in the last 3 weeks.

They lost 2/3 against the Nationals last year. They made the playoffs, but that doesn’t all of a sudden mean those weren’t bad games. Bad games are bad games, you can’t deny that. If you can’t even admit that these were bad games, then you clearly are just delusional.

pettitte battled. yankees offense is a sleep. tex and arod have sucked most of the year. do not tell me about rbi’s they have men on base all the time. granderson is not that good… the guy is hittin 240′sish that is not good.

nice miss call at 2nd by another bozo ump. valdez was out by 1.5 feet.
joba did what he does often, suck and not throw strikes.

    overall and poor performance…

  581. RS June 17th, 2010 at 10:27 pm

I’m rooting for the Braves in the NL East. They have Melky and Hinske, two former Yankees that were well liked here. Heyward, Jurrjens, and Hanson are exciting young players, Cox and Chipper are in their last years, and it would be cool to see Wagner actually perform down the stretch like he couldn’t for the Mets and Phillies.

  582. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos June 17th, 2010 at 10:27 pm

I must be watching some other team. My team has played pretty darn well most of the year, overcoming injuries and slumps to maintain the best or second best record in baseball. They are more than holding their own at this point. There is more than half a season left in which to get healthy and to get out of slumps.

The 2009 team at this time last year was not the team that finished the year. They did not dominate go on a tear until after the ASB. Until then it was very touch and go. Stop revising history.

Tough series. After beating Halladay, you figured they’d get the series at least. It’s disappointing but tomorrow is another day. Most disappointed the bullpen couldn’t hold it, especially after last night. Lot of hard hit balls right at people. Near misses. Sigh.

  583. Mike June 17th, 2010 at 10:28 pm

We might have the most deceiving 16 games over record of all-time.

We accumulated it early. We are 9-14 vs. over .500 teams since the Boston series.

The Orioles saved us from being in 3rd, potentially 4th place. Literally. With an assist to Cleveland.

    The Philly Phitins,

Lol you don’t even deserve a response but I’ll give you one anyway. The Phillies are 3rd in their division. The Yankees are tied for the best record in the major leagues. The Phillies are barely a .500 team. The Yankees have scored the most runs in baseball. The Philled are #21 in runs scored. The Yankees are also ranked better at pitching. The Yankees are also defending WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!! Yes I am SOOOOO ashamed of this team. Now why don’t you go celebrate your win. Its going to be the Phillies biggest win of the season.

This probably sounds like a knee jerk comment… and maybe it is.. but Joba needs some work… Is there any way we can send hom to AAA and set him free and let him get his groiove back??

No I am not an alarmist… but I think Joba needs to regain his confidence somehow!!

At this point you may have one ! ( point ) His head isn’t straight for sure.

  591. mick June 17th, 2010 at 10:29 pm

The 2009 team at this time last year was not the team that finished the year. They did not dominate go on a tear until after the ASB. Until then it was very touch and go. Stop revising history.
    ===============================================
    Doreen,
As this team needs to make changes, all I’m sayin.

  592. Michelle June 17th, 2010 at 10:29 pm

Arod is clearly not 100%, he might not even be 80%. He had fastballs right over the plate to hit and he can’t drive the ball. I am really surprised he isn’t sitting for another week until the NL games. I hope it doesnt cost him a trip to the DL. Poor Andy he deserved a win tonight. Instead he got a Pena error, the ump missing strikes and instead it was a walk to Ruiz and then the Joba and Marte mess.

  593. G. Love June 17th, 2010 at 10:30 pm

The injuries and slumps are killing this offense.

This team has had the intended lineup all together on the field healthy a handful of times.

Andy pitched well enough to win tonight, but with this kind of offensive performance what’s the point.

Texeira has to simply start showing up. He’s healthy. He doesn’t get a pass from me. Arod and Jorge are both not 100% so you cut them some slack, but for Tex to be hitting this poorly is tough to stomach.

Cano needs to be put in the 3rd spot. Texeira will not hit for an average high enough to justify batting him 3rd.

The biggest thing is the team needs to get healthy and they need to get a real DH in here and knock off the rotating DH game that shortens the lineup when Pena and Cervelli have to play.

  594. m June 17th, 2010 at 10:30 pm

I hate it when the offense doesn’t show up. The Negative Nates & Nancies get their day under the black cloud.

    Doreeen,

What in the world are you talking about? I demand perfection? So because I say a guy didn’t have a good game, I expect perfection?

You don’t need perfection to win games, you just need to not play AWFUL baseball. You can easily win games without being even close to perfect. If you play even OK baseball in a game like tonight, you probably win this game. Yes, good teams lose games, but the last two nights were not just inevitable losses, they were games in which they pretty much did not show up whatsoever.

It’s amazing that the center point of your criticism is something I not only never said tonight, but never in my right mind would even think of saying. Whatever helps you sleep at night I guess. It’s one thing to lose and get outplayed, and it’s another to lose and beat yourself. You “tip your cap” to a guy when he legitimately beats you, not when you made outs consistently on 89 mph sinkers down the middle.

  598. RhapsodyInBlue June 17th, 2010 at 10:30 pm

“…….But the Phitins kicked your butt. Mets will beat you too!

We are the Phitins, we kicked Yankees butt with a old man, and a a iffy pitcher.

Go Phitins with your bad selves!!!”

Trying to save face by taking 2 of 3 from NY in interleague, impressive.

They choked last fall in 6 games, those are the games that will be remembered..

  599. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos June 17th, 2010 at 10:30 pm

Matt what DOES a 41-24 team play like?

They don’t give style points. this loss is no better or worse than a 2-1 loss, the 9-3 win was no better or worse than a 2-1 win.

the Rays are 41-24 or 41-23. Do THEY play like a 41-23/41-24 team? In what way? And if so, how do we differentiate that in the standings?

  600. RS June 17th, 2010 at 10:30 pm

“Joba is not = to Hughes.
Burnett is not = to 09 Burnett.
Tex is not = to 09 Tex.
Gardner and Granderson are not = to Damon and Matsui and Melky.
This is a different team , face it.”

I see you conveniently forgot to mention Cano, Pettitte, Hughes, Vazquez, Sabathia, Mitre, Cervelli, and Swisher…the players who IMPROVED from last year.

  601. Damon enjoy 27....think 28 June 17th, 2010 at 10:30 pm

TB lost too and all is well in the universe. Yankees wipe this bad taste out of your mouth, it’s done.

You win some and you lose some, That’s baseball. badda -bing, -badda- boom.

We can’t go forward looking back, Yankees-phillies series ovah!!

  602. TheStraw June 17th, 2010 at 10:31 pm

Guess what? Games against sub .500 teams count the same as the ones against winning teams. Stop with the psychobabble analysis. They have winning records against The Red Sox, Minnesota, and Texas who are all pretty good teams.

  603. Phil Columbus June 17th, 2010 at 10:32 pm

Joba is not a very good pitcher. Yanks need to move on from him. Trade him or send him to AAA. He can’t handle NYC. Weather it was Joba rules or whatever this kid is done. I hate to say that but he is hurting this team. Can’t count on him. Sometimes it just doesn’t work.

They showed a bunch of angles, but the clearest one was on the homeplate side of second base. You could clearly see the tag coming down on his leg.

    Clown?
Didn’t I say our staring pitching has been better than last year, clown?
If Tex doesn’t pick it up we aint winning a thing.
Swish and Cano are certainly better but the loss of Damon, Matsui and Melky ripped the heart out of this team.
Talent and heart are two different things, clown.

  609. Trevor June 17th, 2010 at 10:36 pm

Teixeira is starting to become a concern. He has isolated good games but nothing is ever sustained. Looks like a bad year for him. Arod isn’t %100 and may not be for the rest of the year. That’s your 3 and 4 hitters right there and in some games that’s going to be an issue.

  610. 57' Yank June 17th, 2010 at 10:38 pm

  616. Matt June 17th, 2010 at 10:42 pm

    57′ Yank,

The tag was on the home plate side of second base and the runner clearly would have shielded you with such an angle. How could you have even seen it? YES showed an angle in which he clearly tagged him on the back of the leg. His pant leg was brushed and billowed a bit as soon as he tagged him, which it wasn’t doing beforehand.

  617. Tarheelyank June 17th, 2010 at 10:42 pm

“Well, from behind 2nd looking towards 1st’

    That angle he looked safe.

The one that showed It was (I am guessing)was from the Yankee dugout. The ump was in a perfect position because the angle was like looking over his shoulder. One thing lost in all that, was what a great throw that was from Cervelli. It was a ball in the dirt, that was right on the money.

  618. 57' Yank June 17th, 2010 at 10:44 pm
