Career vs. Yankees
TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m. / YES Network and MLB Network
UMPIRES: HP Tom Hallion, 1B Wally Bell, 2B Lance Barksdale, 3B Ed Rapuano
WEATHER: Temperatures in the 70s. Cloudy but not much chance of rain.
GOOD MATCHUP: Andy Pettitte hasn’t faced this group of Phillies very often, but Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jayson Werth are a combined 3-for-29 against the Yankees starter. In last year’s World Series, Pettitte allowed a total of two hits to that Phillies trio. Both were home runs.
ONE AND DONE: Mark Teixeira is the only Yankees batter to have faced Kyle Kendrick. Teixeira is 1-for-12 with a home run, two walks and a strikeout.
LOCKED WHEN LOADED: With the bases loaded, the Yankees lead the majors in batting average (.429), at-bats (84), hits (36), grand slams (6), RBI (99), walks (11) and on-base percentage (.490).
MORE LOCKED WHEN LOADED: Francisco Cervelli is 6-for-8 with the bases loaded this season. His 15 RBI with the bases loaded are second in the majors behind Alex Rodriguez, who has 16 bases-loaded RBI.
UPDATE, 7:20 p.m.: Scoreless through one. Both Pettitte and Kendrick sent the side down in order. Three batters put the ball in play. Three struck out.
UPDATE, 7:24 p.m.: By striking out Jayson Werth, Pettitte passed Ron Guidry for second place on the Yankees all-time strikeouts list. Pettitte has 1,779 Ks as a Yankee.
UPDATE, 7:56 p.m.: Looked like Ramiro Pena expected the ball to take a little bit of a hop there and it never happened. The ball stayed low, got under his glove and Ryan Howard took advantage of the error with an RBI single. It’s now 1-0 Phillies with two on and one out in the fourth.
UPDATE, 8:15 p.m.: Shane Victorino wasn’t the best player I ever covered in Scranton — that was Chase Utley — but he certainly had the best all-around season I ever covered in Scranton. He’s a really nice player, and he just took Pettitte deep for a 3-0 Phillies lead.
UPDATE, 8:24 p.m.: The Yankees really haven’t been able to get anything going against Kendrick. A two-out, fifth-inning single by Francisco Cervelli was the first hit since Robinson Cano’s single in the second inning.
UPDATE, 8:50 p.m.: Robinson Cano — who else? — just had a two-out RBI single to put the Yankees on the board, cutting the lead to 3-1. Here comes Swisher with two on and two outs in the sixth.
UPDATE, 8:52 p.m.: Well that’s just a nice play by Polanco. His catch along the tarp has ended the inning, still a 3-1 Phillies lead.
UPDATE, 9:10 p.m.: Big time pitching by Pettitte to get out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam here in the seventh. You’ll be shocked to learn that Cervelli was pumped!
UPDATE, 9:24 p.m.: Here comes Dave Robertson to relieve Pettitte. Kendrick has worked another scoreless inning to keep it 3-1 after seven.
UPDATE, 9:50 p.m.: The Phillies let the No. 9 hitter swing away, and it resulted in an RBI single through the drawn in infield. It’s now 4-1 Phillies. Marte getting loose in the bullpen.
UPDATE, 10:05 p.m.: Sac fly makes it 5-1. The Yankees have scored three four runs since Tuesday. They now need four runs in the ninth.
UPDATE, 10:07 p.m.: Another sac fly makes it 6-1. The Yankees now need five runs in the ninth.
UPDATE, 10:14 p.m.: Oh boy. There’s an RBI double off Chan Ho Park and it’s now 7-1. That escalated quickly!
UPDATE, 10:17 p.m.: I have no idea what that conversation was like among the umpires, but at some point, someone should have asked this question: Is there anyway Jeter would have misplayed the ball that badly without it hitting the runner?

hopefully its not the kind of night when yankees never faced the pitcher and struggle for most of the game and come back and lose by 1 or 2. Big series win tonight would be nice with momentum into the subway series part 2 vs the red-hot mets!
Can anybody here confirm the MLB Network broadcast is simply the YES Feed or
will it be Costas/Katt in the booth?
MORE LOCKED WHEN LOADED: Francisco Cervelli is 6-for-8 with the bases loaded this season. His 15 RBI with the bases loaded are second in the majors behind Alex Rodriguez, who has 16 bases-loaded
==============
I wonder how many opportunities Alex has had

If anyone needs a stream of the game, I am broadcasting using WCBS so click the link above
The MLB feed, which I am reduced to, is neither the YES feed nor Costas/Kaat, it’s Matt Vasergian (sp?) and Smoltz.

Alex is 5-10 with a BB with the bases loaded this year. 2 GS.
His OBP is .500 which would suggest a sac fly in there too.

Here’s my theory on the 3 catcher situation.
Montero will be up next year with Cervelli as the backup.
After next season, Posada’s gone, Montero shifts to primary DH with Romine as the primary C and Cervelli still as the back up
Eventually I think Montero winds up at 1b (he’ll be 27 I think when Tex’s contract runs out)
************
It’s possible but if other teams value Montero as a full-time catcher rather than DH and Cervelli as a starting catcher rather than backup, those player might be worth more as trade chips.
That’s why I think it’s possible only 1 of the 3 remains a Yankee.
Rishi, Rodriguez is 5-10 with 1 walk, 2 homers and 1 sac fly with bases loaded
Hope this Kendrick guy throws harder than 79 mph fastballs. I think we were put to sleep yesterday. That or the ball had some oil on it.
Montero is not going to be the primary catcher in 2011. As long as Posada is healthy and effective, he will be the primary catcher (85-100 games) with Cervelli backing up (late innings and if Montero is ready he will catch 40-50 games and DH.
GB and NSF. Good to see you guys. Hope all is going good in your neck of the woods.
Go Andy, go bats!

I don’t know why, but I found this excerpt of an Andande chat pretty hilarious:
J. A. Adande:
I was in Madison Square Garden for Game 5 of the NBA Finals…..and I can’t tell you a single thing that happened in the game. I was transfixed on the small TV monitor by my seat, watching OJ in the Bronco
J. A. Adande:
I hope you watched it all the way till the end, when they played the clip of the guy asking Pat Riley “If OJ cuts left, do you think he makes it?” Somehow a fan got into the interview area, and beer in hand he asked that question. Mike Lupica was furious and chased the guy down
J. A. Adande:
That’s one of my distinct memories from that night.
Hey, S.o.S., good to see you too, though NSF continues to look like NSFW to my lazy eyes.
Aside from some kind of unprecedented double-forfeit, I still don’t know what to root for in the Finals tonight… ugh. No way out.
Have you completed your move from the fire back into the frying pan yet?
m, this has nothing to go with anything, but I was at the Giants/Orioles game on Monday night and I saw a guy wearing an O.J. Simpson USC jersey… you really don’t see that much anymore. I took a photo.
mel,
Game 7. I give the Lakers an 80% chance to win with the Celts missing their big man. Big baby is the key to the game. If he has a big game, Lakers are in trouble(aside from 2 of the big 3). Bynum is key to the Lakers. If he plays minutes, it will keep Rondo out of the paint. If not, its a totally different game.
Evening, S.o.S. Doing well here. Great to see that you aren’t blaming the regs for the trolls. Hopefully you’ll be around to help pick ‘em off.
Nick,
lol. Some people have no shame!
SoS,
I’ll revisit your comments after the game.
swbyankeesTT The Yankees have signed veteran infielder Eric Bruntlett to a minor-league contract. He will be activated tonight by SWB and start at 3B.

Nick(formally NSF),
Yes!! Finally made the move back to Temecula last weekend. I closed my business down and want to take my time looking for a new line of work. Want to take the family out this summer and coach both of them in pop warner football. The bad part about it i guess(hope the wife isnt reading this) is we spend ALL DAY together and never get a chance to get in here like i did when i had to go to work. Damned if i work, damned if i dont.
Miss being here fellas.
GO CELTICS!! Never thought i would ever commit a mel and root for a boston team.
Go Celtics.

No one handles them better than you my friend. The human fly/troll swatter.
ha, I only took the photo while the guy had his back to me. Unfortunately, he had his son (!) on his back so the jersey is partially obscured. But enough is visible.
Hope you get a chance to check in when convenient, S.o.S., we need more folks with a sense of humor and a clue around here.
For a #5 hitter, Cano gets too many ABs with the bases empty.
Alex shouldnt have bent to get that foul tip. Use the hip for Abombs instead.
He just hits it hard almost every time.
I got good new this evening – my daughter’s lease application was approved and she will be moving to White Plains in September !!
THat Cano, so boring – another hit.
you just knew he was going to be the first to get a hit!
It doesn’t matter who is pitching, Robbie Cano still rakes.
He’s amazing to watch this year.
cano for mvp
Did I mention that I own an original Modell’s Cano T-shirt with his original number 22 that he gave up when Clemens returned to the Yankees?
Thanks NoCal. Im sure ill be back to normality soon. I see less regulars in here. They are either all moving their residence, miss my bad jokes or the trolls have been winning the battle.
BTW,
LOST finally sucked. They played it safe. I put it in the same section as Supranos.
Yanks signed eric bruntlett, utility infielder for Scranton

An exciting time for her I’m sure and a little bit of a nerve wracking one for you.
based on the numbers – a good spot for Cervelli

Absolutely!
Congrats Doreen.
btw,
Did any of your kids get your beautiful eyes? I have hazel eyes and my wife has brown, but our first born ended up with blue eyes as a toddler and now is green. I believe in the dont ask dont tell policy. Hes going to be tall and has green eyes. My thought is at least she had good taste in what mail man to deliver.
Cervelli can’t do it every time

Not this time.
Why did Yanks dump Winfree ? No one answered yesterday !
For CAno that’s become a routine play.
Cano is so much better than 3 yrs. ago in the field, it’s scary.
bummer – next time, then..
SJ,
Cano for MVP.
Hows Tony doing this year? Avg? level hes at? When does he project making it to the dance? I see the Pirates are struggling offensively. I assume that expedites things.
If AJ could PITCH like Pettitte, we would have something other than a “hit and miss” guy !
31 pitches through 3 innings. W00t!
They didn’t dump Winfree.
He had an out in his deal stating that he can be released ifvhe can get onto a teams 40 Man Roster so, he exercised it.
Don’t know where he ended up yet.

Winfree is looking for a team to guarantee a 40 moan spot. Nothing pending as yet.

Doing well. Hitting .315 and made the All Star team.
Got beaned a few weeks ago and that set him back a bit.
He’s back playing and took a pitch in the shoulder last night. He’s ok but is sitting out tonight.
Thanks for asking.

Sorry. I’ve been off for a while.

Hey!
they just showed the O’Neill banner!!!!
how does pena take the most pitches that inning
That was a bad inning….
39 pitches after 3 innings for Kendrick.
w00t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Yanks aren’t exactly making Kendrick work.
Its astounding that the Yankees have been so hot recently with the heart of the lineup playing so poorly. Granderson, Tex, and Rodriguez are all off their games right now. You’ve got to imagine they will catch fire at some point, as talented as they are.
Jeter’s ABs are just atrocious. 3 pitch K and 1 pitch out?
TylerKepner Yanks sign Eric Bruntlett for AAA. Hit a homer off David Price in the ’08 World Series. File that away for September…or for the 2010 ALCS.

SJ,
Thats good news, production wise. I have alot of respect for catchers. I played shortstop in little league and went to catching for a year. I have to say, your not catching if your not dinged up. My average dropped when playing behind the plate. It was exhausting and the foul tips to the toes and shoulders didnt help. He sounds like a natural with the bat and being related to sj, a good head on his shoulders. Hope you dont mind me asking from time to time.
Cant wait till my boy is in high school(2 more years) and is still consistantly dominant(middle linebacker). We moved next to a high school that just won the southern california championship this past year. So there will be lots of competition. I believe he will excell, but you never know. If not given the oportunity, your nothing special.
We are very fortunate to be able to get 1 out of 3 against the Phillies, considering we can’t seem to beat good teams.
Doreen,
Yes, WP has really come alive since there has been so much construction downtown. There are lots of young people there too. You should be closer to her also, which is nice.
Cashman wake up and go get an infielder who could field and hit!
Bad mistake by Pena. Lets see if Pettitte can keep pithing well.
The Yankees offense is just pathetic.
Granderson, Tex, and Rodriguez are all off their games right now
========
Maybe we caught a case of PHILLI-ITUS? Nothing a slump buster cant fix.
Well, is this the beginning of the end?
If we are down by 2 runs, you know we aren’t coming back in the game.
Pena’s really not looking like a major league utility infielder. He’s just not nearly a good enough hitter. That’s somewhere Cashman should look to upgrade.
SOS,
No problem, ask anytime.
The Yankees are losing 1-0. This place will now turn into a sewer with trolls, whiners and crybabies.
Time to exit for the evening.
Andy Pettitte deserves another win and his ever declining era which is currently 2.37, but this dysfunctional offensive lineup sometimes goes into a funk.
I wonder what our record is against teams 500 or above….
When are the Yankees going to get a ShortStop who doesn’t stink in big games?
Honestly, the Yankees have won multiple games this year where they looked barely conscious. If Pettitte pitches as well as he has, they will pull this one out.
hris W June 17th, 2010 at 7:54 pm

The ball hit the lip of the grass ! Pena is a very good glove !
Andy is amazing
I can’t believe Pena is still on this team with his atrocious bat. In the future, and he is climbing fast, I want to see what Brandon Laird can do.
It doesn’t take much for people to show thier true colors, does it.
The lack of baseball knowledge seems to become so apparent when there is any kind of adversity for the team. Why is that?
Isn’t Raul the name of that villain from ‘Batman Beginnings’?
STOP BLAMING PENA FOR OUR OFFENSIVE WOOOS’ ITS NOT HIS FAULT TEXIERIA, AROD HAVE BEEN HORRIBLE AND GRANDERSON CANT GET HIS AVG OVER 240.

Why are you leaving for the night?
Why are you assuming the trolls and weak fans will dominate the entire evening?
No faith the Yanks can come back?
teixieria is a loser, why can’t we have the mets 1st baseman ike davis? now thats a star
Pena isn’t responsible for anything, but he’s yet to demonstrate a hitting ability that a championship-caliber team needs from their utility infielder, especially an old one like the Yankees. We need a guy that can hit enough to not be a total liability when asked to play for stretches of time. Honestly, Enrique Wilson fit that description in his prime. But Pena’s not even that good with the stick.
Tarheel,
Half are trolls and the other half are emotional chlidren who don’t understand the game.

The pitching has usually been fine. The offense has been massively streaky, and I think a lot of that has to do with the injuries. The Yankees are a good team, and very capable of beating other good teams when everything is even average. That is hasn’t been at times, and the team has such a terrific record, demonstrates the overall quality of the team. This is virtually the same team that won a world series last year. You suppose they got there just by beating up bad teams? Yeah right.
Funny, reading some of these posts, youd think we were in last place rather than first with the best record in baseball. Immagine if we werent slumping? It just wouldnt be fair.

There are time you do wonder how on earth this team leads the majors in runs scored.

Rich,
Teix will get out of this funk soon enough. Cano is already hot. We need Alex protecting Mark. #3 hitter is just as important as the #5. I dont believe it would help him batting 5th instead of where hes sitting at this time. The back of the card will show up before you know it.

Long season. Head to head against anyone means nothing unless it’s in playoffs or World Series.
.
I love Andy!!.. He is great!.. One thing amazing about this year compared to his previous years… He is giving up wayyy less than 1 H per IP. If you look at his past, most seasons he was quite a bit over 1 H per IP. Actually, I was always amazed at how he managed to keep his ER figures relatively in control (though not as low as this year) even with the H per IP. Of course his BB/IP numbers are decent, but never have been fantastic.
….. Anyway… “Go Andy!!” Keep having a great season!!
And come back next year!!!!
a-rod clogging up the lineup because he can only DH is not helping. if you can only help the team by hitting, HIT. coming back and only being able to DH and doing crap every game does nothing. not only that but a replacement then must play 3rd, and Pena has already struck out and made a costly error. this offense is so frustrating and far too streaky. how do you shell roy halladay and get shut down by jamie moyer and kyle kendrick? they need to wake up and score a couple runs off this bum.
sure the yanks have a great record. we know that. but in this division you can go on a 3 or 4 game losing streak and find yourself in 3rd place. it may not be fair that the 3rd place team in the East when it’s all said it done might have a better record than the leaders of other two divisions. but only 2 teams can make the playoffs from the East. the Yankees can’t afford any type of extended poor stretch this season is all likelihood.
Gah. That hurts. Pettitte needs to keep them here.

This place is pitiful when a game is going. The intelligent conversation stops and all there is is complaining and whining and now I am complaining about the whining. Ridiculous. Where is the intelligent life when you want it?
Seriously, are any of you actually watching these last two games.
I’d like to see anyone say with a straight face to “tip their cap” to pitchers like Moyer and Kendrick. Moyer wasn’t that good last night, the Yankees just swung at nothing balls off the plate all night. Kendrick has an 89 mph flat sinker and that’s about it. Their ERA’s are in the high 4′s- low 5′s for a reason, almost EVERYONE else is hitting them, EXCEPT the Yankees.
5 hits in last 15 innings. Guess which team that is, the offensively challenged Phillies of the Yanks.
The 6th inning will be telling. That’s the heart of the lineup. If they can’t deliver, the Yankees might be in trouble.
the phillies starting pitching is garbage outside of halladay. hamels is ok but he’s unreliable. after those 2 guys the talent takes a nose dive. blanton, moyer, and kendrick are all complete scrubs. after beating halladay the yanks should have swept this series considering it’s at home and the Phils have been awful. just because the Yankees have a great record this year doesn’t mean you can make excuses for them every single game.

I have stated the obvious about the team’s hitting the past couple of games, Yeah that’s baseball but doesn’t mean it cannot be mentioned.
What is with some folks. Go somewhere else to unleash your frustrations about the Yankees losing guy.
Seems like so many teams and players that are struggling “wake-up” vs. the Yankees…not sure why this is the case, I guess being the World Champions and the Yankees does that…..for example the Phillies offense…..and also Jason Bay has been terrible this year except when he plays the Yankees…we couldn’t get him out…..maybe the Red Sox have figured something out with our pitchers, signs, etc…and Bay took that knowledge with him???? I bet he is great again this weekend vs. us….
“U
Top 3 of Moyer, Kendrick, Halladay looking pretty good.
No?
No! third place.
Idiot.
(Thats for you Hector, maybe we can tag team the trolls)
Damn this offense is weak right now
Moyer n Kendrick. Disgraceful.
Even with the joke of an offense so far tonight, opponents are still hitting .267 off of Kendrick and he’s given up 9 HR. Again, his ERA is high for a reason, he really is a mediocre pitcher in the National League.
All of the good hitters are up there trying to pull the sinker, and all the bad ones are popping out because they are trying to slap it and have no power.

This place is pitiful when a game is going. The intelligent conversation stops and all there is is complaining and whining and now I am complaining about the whining. Ridiculous. Where is the intelligent life when you want it?
======================================================
Immaturity reigns ! Wish they would just get a crying towel and leave !
Boy this place goes downhill fast.
Back to iPod scrabble.
This is a disgrace.
Keith, I now invite you to consider the much less memorable number of players that are ice-cold coming into a Yankees series…and then proceed to stay ice-cold.
Seriously, you don’t remember the vast majority of the cases.
seems to me like the Yankees did just fine against ROY HALLADAY…was that a fluke?
You know what is more annoying than the folks who complain about every out made
The individuals who find it necessary to then post a rebuttal to that about the ills of the folks complaining, its one big circle of flying turd.
Some of you folks are no better than those who complain, because you then spend the time complaining about them in every other post.
I am so tired of the trolls running rampant.
I am taking back this blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, the Yankees have a great record because their pitching has been great.
But when their pitching isn’t lights out, they roll over and die for the most part.
Being down 3 runs at home is not game over, but with this team it feels like it’s 6 runs. They have not had the same ability to come back this year, and it’s not the injuries, it’s guys in the heart of the order like Teixeira who have killed a ton of crucial rallies.
You can’t keep citing last year to say that they will get it done offensively when they are behind in games. So far this year, they have really not been able to do it. That one game in Toronto they were down 2 runs and had been shut out, so that wasn’t really a huge comeback, even though it felt like it because they were so terrible before that.
Last year there were a ton of games they were down 4 or 5 runs early and came back and made it a 1 or 2 run game right at the end. They haven’t done that this year because they haven’t been scoring early in games. When the bullpen comes in and you are down 5 runs, it’s too late.
if anyone has a topic other than the morons, I’m happy to discuss
really, i feel sorry for the people that complain about the complainers. because they are the ones glued to their computer and replying to comments and talking to each other on this site 24/7
I am with you Erica… enough of this!
The offense has been inconsistent from time to time this year. I attribute it at least in part to all the injuries. There are a lot of weak spots in the line-up at the moment and when they fall behind the big hitters seem to try to do too much.

I have no issue’s with the Yankees losing. I am sick of the whining and the trolls who come on here and polute a great baseball blog. Also I happen to think Andy Pettitte is a great Yankee and reading all this dribble infuriates me. So for as long as I feel like it if you post nonsense me (or Hector) will call you on it. capiche?
who said this is the same team as last year…?
uhm, no Damon or Matsui (melky too but who cares)
is hardly the same team!
dont even think of blaming injuries.. whenever this team doesnt hit thats the first excuse you use.
tex isnt just struggling its mid june and he is still lost! need i remind you that he’s been lost since post season last year and is yet to return!
i like grandy but hes no damon, and nick glass johnson is for sure no matsui!
face it are bats are near dead, but we are in first place.. the bats will wake up, but i just dont know if we have that offensive punch this year that we had last year…
i miss the blasts to right by damon/matsui tgats for sure!
Since you are the brightest kid on the blog Matt, why don’t you call Cash and tell him he needs your services. That way you can really help the Yanks.
The one thing I will say and it is obvious is that if Tex resembled the player a year ago and put up his normal numbers, this team would be a heckavu lot better.. Not complaining, just stating a fact.

===================================================
A “couple of games ?” Big deal !
Who’s leading the league in hitting, and runs, best record in BB ? (tied )
You want perfection ?
You’d think that the big “GAME 66″ written up at the top of the blog might encourage some people to realize that there is a ton of baseball left to be played, and this series will be a distant memory in a month or two. But apparently it doesn’t.
It’s not ‘making excuses’ to not condemn the Yankees offense for a poor showing. The offense is the one part of this team that you know will always get going eventually. If the starting pitching was all Burnett-like, I’d be worried. If the bullpen was as terrible as it was earlier in the series, I’d be worried.
The bats always come around. The day the post-2000 Yankees lose the division because they can’t hit enough is the day hell freezes over.
That would be very nice Erica

———————————————————————————————
OMG ! Are you that far out of it ? How old are you? 10 ?
Does anyone know when Eiland is returning or where he is?
Here’s a bold prediction for the night:
The Yankees will NOT get blanked
Melky is having a terribly season for the Braves, so don’t bother with that. The Nick Johnson acquisition has been a complete disaster, there is little doubt of that. But the absence of Matsui and Damon is not what has killed the team. The problem is that A-Rod has been hitting well below his career averages, and Tex has been flat-out terrible. Cano and Gardner have both exceeded expectations, and can probably be counted on to continue playing at a high level. That’s a bit less true of Swisher, who is due for a slump at some point. Posada also needs to get in a groove and stay healthy.
Damon wanted a ridiculous contract, and the Yankees wisely did not give it to him. Matsui for Johnson was a more questionable decision.
Raul Ibanez makes 12 million dollars.
We have to come back and win this game or Philly Phitins will be trolling all day tomorrow. LOL. j/k….well, not really.
“Who here has said anything about Andy Pettitte that is infuriating, all the comments I see reference the Yankees offense.”

Alright. Pettitte gets out of trouble. Now get some runs on the board against Kendrick.

A-Rod and the umpire are having a nice chat and getting to know wach other
Come on Swish!
The biggest difference between this year and last year is homeruns. Last year the Yankees had 7 players with 20+ homeruns. This year they might have 4. Gardner and Cervelli have been outstanding but don’t provide any power.
The thing about homeruns is that you don’t want to rely on them too much, but it also makes it much easier to come from behind in games. When Tex and Arod are hitting 2 or 3 run bombs, the Yankees can make a 4-0 deficit 4-3 quickly and then the rest of the hitters can just relax and do their job. Once those two get their power stroke, the Yankees will have a much easier time coming back from deficits.

BS…..nice catch though….got one back at least. 3 more AB’s to get the other two.
We should sign Moyer and Kenderick when they become available.
Of course the ball had to land in front of a couple of girls who ducked instead of trying to interfere
Polanco had to have used heavy PED’s to have such a build up of muscle on his temple area like that. It has caused his head to become misshapen.
I love Swisher. The amount of force he was trying to hit that ball with, and the fact that he was swinging straight up, it would have hit the moon if he made contact on the barrel of the bat.
1 run in 6 off a scrub like Kendrick. Guess they thought one game beating Doc was good enough.
Hanging slider right down the middle, then hanging sinker right down the middle.
Again, keep talking about how this guy is throwing a great game against the Yankees. They are making a mediocre pitcher look like an all star, and it’s pathetic.
thats where the rich fans hurt you, you need to bartman that play.
It’s too bad all of that happened after we had 2 outs. If Jeter or Granderson had reached that would have been a big inning.
Those woman should be escorted from the stadium for being crappy Yankee fans and not interfering with that play. They have every right to try and catch a call that goes in the stands. Where’s Jeffrey Maier when you need him!!!

“Rich,
Teix will get out of this funk soon enough. Cano is already hot.”
My comment had nothing to do with Teix and how he’s hitting. My point is that Cano isn’t just hot, he’s taken his game to another level (or two), and perhaps the lineup should reflect that.

And your doctor’s office is calling !
Phillies team MVP goes to the woman ducking in the first row of the stands on the Polanco catch. Well done.
If Teixeira were in Boston, the heat on him would be far greater. He has been, in a word, putrid.
Here we go again with the “he’ll come around soon because he did last year!”
Teixeira is hitting .224 on June 17th. 2 and a half months and he still hasn’t turned it around. He’s not going to be this bad all season, but stop making excuses for it. He’s been TERRIBLE for much of this season, and we’ve been saying he’s “about to turn it around” for weeks and weeks now. How about he actually starts hitting for once?
If Teixeira is even hitting .250 or .260, the offense is completely different. Hard to score runs when the #3 spot in your lineup is a black hole.
YankFanCA,how has granderson been terrible for a long time? he hasn’t been back for a month yet.

Agree with RS about the lack of power, at least so far, compared to last year. It makes it much tougher to come back from large deficits when your line-up is lacking power. They don’t need Matsui and Damon back. They just need Tex and Arod to start hitting like the back of their baseball cards, Posada to stay healthy and Granderson to get on a roll.
Tex is the one who concerns me most since he has basically been in a funk since the start of the playoffs last year.
where is Bartman when you need him? The women were probably hoping Polanco would fall on their laps…………

Who are these 2 Yankees on base when Tex and A-Rod are hitting these 3 run HRs you are looking for?
Jeter is batting in the .280′s with a terrible OBP and the production from the 2 hole hasn’t been great either.

========================================================
Did you call him again ? Wow !
The worst thing about getting shut down by Moyer and Kendrick is that if the Yankees were to face the Phillies in the WS, they probably wouldn’t even face those pitchers. The Phillies top 4 rotation is Halladay, Hamels, Happ, and Blanton. So you can’t even look at gaining experience against these guys as a consolation prize.
And it appears Boston will be just 2 back of us after tonight
Well maybe if the guys at the top aren’t getting it done, we need to juggle the lineup a bit so our best hitters are coming up more often, right?
The Phillies just swapped Utley and Polanco and it looks like it’s given them a little bit of life here. Polanco is the only guy on that team hitting right now, so they are batting him 3rd in a crucial spot in the lineup.
Why do you keep running out a lineup with your worst hitter batting 3rd and your best 5th? Cano needs to bat behind the guys at the top who have typically been getting on base.
Yanks are on the brink to lose series.
And their fate for next series doesn’t looks good.

Clutch out! 1 more here. Howard can be struck out. Lets go
“Who are these 2 Yankees on base when Tex and A-Rod are hitting these 3 run HRs you are looking for?”
Maybe Girardi should tweak the lineup then. Put Gardner leadoff and bat Jeter second. Gardner has what, the second or third highest OBP on the team? I don’t think Granderson is working at the top of the lineup because he and Teixeira back to back is pretty brutal. Grandy is good as a seventh or eighth guy because of his power, but his low OBP makes him unsuited to be at a premier run scoring position.
# Matt June 17th, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Pettite bends but doesn’t break…great job. Pitched his butt off, now its the offenses turn.
way to go Andy!!
Sorry, Phillies fans, I’m feel in’ a comeback again!
The guys who get on base most consistently are Cano, Swisher, and Gardner.
Based on production, the Yankees lineup should look something like this:
Gardner
Swisher
Cano
Arod
Posada
Teixeira
Granderson
Jeter
Cervelli
Now that’s obviously way too crazy of a change, but it says something when your top three consistent players bat in the bottom half of the actual lineup.
Andy Pettitte is a rockstar
Can we score now and get him the win pleaseeeee
Andy!
Andy and Cano– co- MVP’s of this short season.
Braves 3
TB 1
It’s funny, because if Howard were on the Yankees side, he would get screamed at for swinging at a ball.
But if he didn’t swing at it, Pettitte would get murdered for not throwing a strike.
It’s a LOSE-LOSE. But fortunately for these athletes they get paid millions of dollars, so I don’t feel bad for them one bit.
Andy really does have a knack of getting out of messes better than anyone.
Glaus with a 2 run, 2 out double with the bases loaded, 3-1 Braves over Tampa, bottom 6th
go Atlanta, go
why isn’t swish batting in the 2nd spot?

———-
Paul O’Neill was routinely dropped to 7th by Torre when he wasn’t hitting. Girardi let’s his loyalty get it he way. Ever since Torre dropped Arod to 7th in the playoffs it’s considered a slap in the face to move any of the big guys in the lineup -ever.
I’ll say it again. Andy is the pitcher I trust most with runners on base. I’ll even put him ahead of Rivera but maybe that’s only because Rivera pitching with baserunners is usually a do-or-die situation.

He’s been immensely disappointing thus far, and doesn’t really seem like he’s going to get that much better anytime soon. But if you think he’ll finish with an OPS under .800, you are kidding yourself. We’re not even halfway through the season.
SAS June 17th, 2010 at 9:22 pm
That was about the 4th time this series that Pena hit the ball on screws and was out.
______________________________________________________________________
He didn’t hit that ball very hard… It was a regular ground ball.
When I see guys like Pena ground out weakly on a pitch right down the middle, it makes me wish we had 9 hitters like Cano. He’s the only guy who consistently makes hard contact, and I realize that’s a special skill.
“# Rich in NJ June 17th, 2010 at 9:21 pm
What good would it do to boo Teix?”
+++++++++++++++++++++
It has long past the point of booing now.
I am actually stunned at how poor his season has been to date.
I keep thinking it will turn around but that is merely hope by this point. It has not been pretty from him.
the lakers are going to need to pick it up
Throw the ball over the plate, Robertson! PLEASE!
We may get to see Contreras tonight.
“When I see guys like Pena ground out weakly on a pitch right down the middle, it makes me wish we had 9 hitters like Cano. He’s the only guy who consistently makes hard contact, and I realize that’s a special skill.”
I miss the circular lineup. Sucks having such weak, slap hitting players at the bottom.
JimmyTraina I’m OK with the Yanks losing 2 out of 3 at home to the Phillies. Same thing last year & we know how that turned out.
2 minutes ago via web
And they show him up and throwing so I guess we will.
There was always a chance that Gardner-Cervelli-Pena wasn’t going to get Andy off the hook.
Arod & Posada breaking down could make the Yankees think twice about going past 3 years with Jeter at age 37 next year.
Tip your hat to Kendrick.
“# pat June 17th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

With the current form of the Yankees hitting, Contreras might look like Gossage on the mound.
Robertson hasn’t had a good curveball in a while. He’s also falling behind too often to use it. They really need him to put together some consistency.
The worst thing about getting shut down by Moyer and Kendrick is that if the Yankees were to face the Phillies in the WS, they probably wouldn’t even face those pitchers.
————–
or will they? I smell a classic Girardi rope-a-dope!
Keep talking about bad luck and such. You don’t need luck to win a game if you have quality at bats innings 1-9, rather than terrible at bats innings 1-5 and all of a sudden wake up for innings 6-9 after you are already down many runs.
i wonder how this lineup will do.

Matt,
They’ll make a cosmetic run in the 9th where they will score 1 run, and then Tex will come up with the winning runs in scoring position and will whiff at a flat slider in the dirt.
This has become very predictable.

Yeah, it’s fun to watch him suffer.
The Yankees may well lose this game, but it’ll be one of the more disappointing losses of the season. They pitched well enough to win, and were just helpless against a mediocre pitcher for the first 5 innings.

Both the Yankees and TB are now trying to stay ahead of Boston. Very disappointing.
The Phillies are not a good team right now. Playing .300 over the past month. I guess because of the fact that the have an over .500 record has scared us and made us play badly like we have against .500+ teams in the last month.

Boston has been on fire… just swept Arizona. Will probably do the same to the Dodgers.
They know how to beat teams over .500 and their offense has been relentless the past 6 weeks. They know the meaning of “get hot and stay hot”. We get hot for 5 days, then go cold for 10.
pathetic
no more wheel play
Not worried about the team in general but really why leave Tex at #3??? It’s not working!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
THIS IS A DISGRACE!!!!!
thanks alot JOBA ! your a big help
Chamberlain does not deserve to be on a major league roster. His fastball command is pitiful, and his feel for pitching is atrocious. I’m really sick of the Yankees giving him preferential treatment.
Joba just sucking major arse tonight.
Joba is just ughhh
Robertson should be the 8th inning guy. Period. Joba is inconsistent, and when he’s not on, he’s abysmal. That’s not what you want in the 8th inning.
we’ll score 2 runs in the 9th now that we are down by 3
Chamberlain = the most overrated pitcher in recent NY sports history
“Boston has been on fire… just swept Arizona. Will probably do the same to the Dodgers.

thats why we have the best record in baseball and boston is in 3rd place..
it makes perfect sense!!!
I would definitely want the Yankees to win rather than the Lakers. The NBA doesn’t interest me much anymore. Now the Yanks or USA tom. is much tougher. The World Cup only comes around every 4 years…
And Joba kills any chance for the comeback.
This has to be the worst series loss of the season, by far. This team didn’t win a series in like what, 6 weeks? And they come into YS with Moyer and Kendrick like it is nothing and shut us down.
Ever since the Fenway Series in early May, this team has forgotten how to play baseball against good teams.
That wasn’t Joba’s fault… If Girardi didn’t try to get cute, it would have been a runner on 2nd with one out.
AGREE — NOW CASHMAN SEND HIM TO THE MARLINS FOR CRIS COHGLAN
Give me a break!!!!
He was clearly out!!!!
He was OUT
trade Joba for a bag of dirt
out at second base…
Cervelli looked sad at the safe call.
And that made me sad.
Blown call
Chamberlain is horrendously overrated. He’s a young pitcher with pretty good stuff, a limited feel for pitching, and inconsistent command. He has a chance to be much better. But its not now.
Yawn…
Who could have possibly guessed bad Joba would show up in a spot in which they could not afford to allow another run?
But again, when you score 1 run it doesn’t matter. After beating Halladay in the first game, there is absolutely no excuse AT HOME to lose this series, especially since the Phillies were not throwing Hamels in either of these 2 games.
we had a chance to have 2 game lead in the east.
Blown call did not matter….as Joba walks the batter.
Yeah, I’ll take the Yanks winning, too. If it doesn’t happen… Goooooooooo Lakers!
Bad ol’ Joba.
Of course, this usually leads to the faux rally in the bottom of the 9th where the runs given up here gives up here becomes costly.
Red Sox will not continue to play at that level–no team does. Wasn’t Tampa supposed to run away with division a month ago. We still have the best record in baseball. Negative whiners should shut up. If the Yanks are struggling in July or August, then you can worry.
joba farnsworth -less thats right fans BOOO him off the field lol
Fer f’s sake Joba… You suck.
hat wasn’t Joba’s fault… If Girardi didn’t try to get cute, it would have been a runner on 2nd with one out.

The Yankees have done far more things right than they have done wrong, but their handling of Joba isn’t one of them.
joba is entitled. he needs to be sent down. i have more confidence in every other pitcher on the staff. seriously.
Nice of the Yankees to get dominated again by pathetic pitchers
The Yankees seem afraid of any team with a winning record

Stop with this “well Boston is in 3rd place” stuff. Boston has a better record than us since the beginning of May. They were 6 games back a month ago and are now riding up our tails. The Yankees have to take care of their own business, because they have not been consistently doing so since the hot start.
Since May 1:
Red Sox: 29-15
Yankees: 26-16
Stop talking about what the Yankees did in April. They are a different team right now than they were in April and have not played at the same level. They need to take care of their own business. They are lucky they had that insanely hot start, because otherwise they’d be the ones in 3rd place right now with how they’ve played at times.
Why is it we never hear about Joba’s lack of performance & velocity in the pen from the “Joba belongs in the pen” sports writers & talk show hosts?
If someone asked, I would trade Joba. I don’t see anyone wanting him now though.
Do you people expect this team to go 162-0? They’re still 16 games over .500 even if they lose tonight.

**Do you people expect this team to go 162-0? They’re still 16 games over .500 even if they lose tonight.**
That’s not the point. The only reason they are even in that position is because of Cano. Look at the stats. Tex and Granderson are barely hitting .200. A-Rod’s injured and his HRs are down. They have been lucky so far. At some point, that luck is going to run out.
Job could work for the catering company, Party Down.
“Do you people expect this team to go 162-0?”

BloggingBombers True… but on 5/23, the Yankees were 6 games behind the Rays, too RT @mweisleder on 4/19 boston was 6.5 and 6 GB respectively
So the Sox made up 4 games in 2 months and the Yankees made up 6 games in less than a month.

Joba is AJ burnett without the fastball movement. They both have extremely inconsistent fastball command.

Roy Halladay was so lost at a similar age that he was sent down to the mL and they remade him. Why not try that with Joba?
I wish fans could be traded.
I would send Matt to the KC Royals for a poster to be named later.
He could whine every night there.
I am not pushing the panic button on Joba yet, but he has NOT earned the eighth inning role.
And now the bullpen implosion…this has been a lost series, and some serious cause for concern, but I’m still not sure we’ve seen the Yankees play their best baseball yet, so I’m hardly worried about missing the playoffs.
Rich,
I was mostly kidding with that comment. I have been on board with that idea for a while.

Do you see the injuries they have dealt with?
How many other teams can move into a tie for first place while dealing with the daily injury report the Yankees have to key players?
Enough already.
You are boring and tiresome and a one trick pony.
I find it hard to believe you are a Yankees fan.
They scored 9 runs the other night.
So they had 2 slow nights here.
So what?
So what if they lose a few more?
You drag this place down. You ONLY show up when they are losing and you ONLY point out negatives.
Guess what? The Yankees are goimg to lose some games. They might lose some games in a row. They are going to have players who are hot and players who slump. It’s baseball. It’s 162-game schedule. they’re not even half done.

Stop making sense.
Doreen,
You really don’t get it. Again, where do I say that one or two games represents the entire season?
It’s pretty obvious this year that the offense has been inconsistent, and it’s guys like Teixeira who have dragged them down, not the injuries. Stating facts is not “bridge jumping” and “giving up on the season,” get over yourself.
They have played two terrible games. If they play 3 awesome games and sweep the Mets, that doesn’t change the fact that these games were incredibly terribly played. Facts are facts, stop putting words in my mouth.
When a guy’s ERA is over 5.00, it’s over 5.00 for a reason. Not hitting him is a failure, period. If a guy goes 0-5, he had a bad day. If he goes 2-3 the next day, that doesn’t all of a sudden mean his last day was a good day or even an average day.
Maybe people are mad because they’ve sat here for 3 hours and watched this garbage for each of the last two nights? Saying they aren’t fans is just ridiculous. They are just as much a fan as any of you because they actually sit there and watch the games unlike you guys, who just shrug it off and don’t care. Having some passion about your team is a huge indicator of fandom, how could it not be?
Maybe they are still watching the games because they think the team is good, but they are frustrated that they are inconsistent and not playing up to that level in many series? Maybe you aren’t the supreme overlord of all Yankees fans who has the right to criticize everyone who has a different way of reacting to things than you do? So you don’t get annoyed watching them play bad, good for you. The rest of us actually care enough to want to see our team win, and I’m sorry you aren’t enough of a fan to even give a damn whether they win or lose on a given night.
this is on Joba. Might as well get it all out of our system now.
Philllies havent had offense like this since they got caught cheating.

This probably sounds like a knee jerk comment… and maybe it is.. but Joba needs some work… Is there any way we can send hom to AAA and set him free and let him get his groiove back??

The Yankees scored ONE run tonight off of Kyle Kendrick. ONE run.
They win this game if they put up even a mediocre offensive performance against a mediocre pitcher. If you hold a team to 3 runs in an American League game, you should win it almost every time with even an average offense.
replay please…. how can there still be an argument against it?
JJ Putz please
Nope the YES network. Maybe they just had a bad camera angle or something on the MLB network. I promise you it wasn’t even close.

the city of philadelphia is bunch of classless wannabe tough guy punks and will get slapped and do nothin if they get out of line
They got that right at least.
Yea Braves
I wouldn’t mind losing 2 of 3 to the Phillies if we had the Nationals and Marlins coming up next like last year, but it’s going to be insufferable with the Mets coming in tomorrow on a 7 game win streak.
TheStraw,
Like I said, another idiot who keeps taking what I say and extrapolating it to its most extreme nature and trying to criticize me for something I never said.
You don’t need anything even CLOSE to perfection to win these kinds of games, you just need to not play like total crap.
Do you know what the average number of runs per game in an American League park is? I’ll give you a hint, it’s quite a bit more than three.
The only difference between this team and the 2008 team is the 2008 offense sucked against everyone. The 2010 offense just sucks against good teams.
When is the last time we won a series against a .500+ team not named Minnesota?
This is the Phillies team that scored ZERO runs against the Mets. We should have wiped up the floor with them. Instead, we only win one game. If Halladay hadn’t been off his game, we would have been swept. That is unacceptable.
People can make excuses all they want, but this Phillies team has been MISERABLE for the last month. They have been reeling. It’s pathetic to look this bad against them. We do have reason for concern. Posada and AROD are obviously not healthy, and Tex is unable to pick up the slack. Joba has been horrible. And we can’t win a series against any decent teams since the first week of May.
Oh well. Hopefully they get it together for the Mets. Cano, Swisher and Gardner have been the only consistent bats all year. Eventually Tex and Arod have to start producing and Jeter needs to get back on track.
And Joba at the moment is Bruney. Good velocity, but you never know what you are getting. That eighth inning needs a consistent presence. That may be the biggest hole they need to fill.
And they are no longer drawing walks.

You should be ashamed of this bunch of over paid flops ROBBING GOOD PLAYERS OF A JOB!
It’s a new season, Yankees won’t win this year, last year is over, tell your team so they stop resting on history. This year ya stink!
Did you notice the Phitins stayed in attack mode all game how? Thats how you slap the taste out of the mouth of the Yankees.
“the city of philadelphia is bunch of classless wannabe tough guy punks and will get slapped and do nothin if they get out of line”
And yet they took 2\3 from us in our own building while they were in the midst of a brutal slump.
The question begs are the Yanks as good as last year.
Certainly they miss the presence of Damon, Matsui and Melky.
They also miss Phil in the pen.
They might have a better record than last year but they are not as deep.
What has held them together has been the starting pitching and Cano.
There will be changes/additions or it will be tough to repeat.
Cano up with the bases empty again. Yay
tex has been garbage this year. i hope he kicks it up second half, maybe end the year with a 250 average and 25 hrs.
This loss isn’t on Joba. He just made it worse.
Matt -
I get it all right. It’s you who don’t get it. You want perfection. It’s baseball. It doesn’t exist. Even a “perfect” game is not perfect for the other team. Most players fail over 70% of the time. A winning team will lost about 40% of their games.
You have one song and you’ve sung it to death.
If you can’t take the downs with the ups, find somewhere else to complain about it.
I somehow think the people who run the Yankees know a little more than you do.
Not only that, why do you keep coming back here when your dissertations on the state of the Yankees are obviously not received very well?
Nobody likes it when their team loses. But life goes on.
Screw the Phillies
I’m rooting for the Mets the rest of the way. Screw them, their team, and their city.
When is the last time we won a series against a .500+ team not named Minnesota?
___
The last time we faced Boston?
I can’t understand the argument against instant replay “because it would take too long”
That took forever
“You really don’t get it… get over yourself.”
Yeesh. Red card for that garbage.
The Yanks must be decent enough with their bats to be second in the MLB in run differential. There are lots of different ways to win a game. You don’t need to score 5 runs a night, every night. You just need to score more than your opponent more times than not.
When is the last time we won a series against a .500+ team not named Minnesota?
__
lost 2 of 3 to the mets
2 of 2 to tampa
2 of 3 to toronto
3 of 4 to detroit
truthfully there arent that many + 500 teams.
If this team had showed up tonight, MO pitches that 9th inning… not Joba.
Blaming Joba for this loss is like blaming your neighbors if your house burns down because you left the oven on too long
“When a guy’s ERA is over 5.00, it’s over 5.00 for a reason”
Based on what Leiter said, Kendrick has had dogs and gems all season. Not all 5.00 ERAs are linear.
Am I happy with the offense this year? Not so much. But if we can all predict what you are going to write every time, is there really a need for you to say it again?

They showed about 3 camera views and the YES announcers even agreed that he was clearly out. Very strange though. I guess one of the stations cameras decided to play a joke on us. Anyway it doesn’t really matter anymore lol. This game is just about over.
at least we still have arizona, seattle, kc, and other winners coming up.
The starting pitching is miles better than last year. The offense seems worse but keep in mind there’s been a lot more injuries this year to position players. The bullpen was better last year but when Aceves comes back it should be decent again.
Joba is not = to Hughes.
Burnett is not = to 09 Burnett.
Tex is not = to 09 Tex.
Gardner and Granderson are not = to Damon and Matsui and Melky.
This is a different team , face it.
Swish needs to bat 2nd. Granderson is a terrible #2 hitter, he doesn’t get on base enough to bat there. Granderson and Tex back to back is brutal. Also enough with the wheel play already. Girardi has tried it 3 times recently and it hasn’t worked in any of the times.
Last thing Joba needs to go to AAA. If his name wasn’t Joba and he was just some random pitcher signed to be the 8th inning guy he would be released or in triple AAA. I don’t know why he gets special treatment.
tonight Joba will say tips cap, or something new?
oh, sun will come up again tomorrow.

Mets are a better team than us right now. And please don’t cite record – they got off to a dreadful start, 4-8. Since that start, the Mets have a better record than us. Scary, I know.
Their hitting is much better than ours. So is their pen. And right now, so is their starting pitching.
Mets should win 2\3. Let’s see if they do.
i guess the only postive we can take out of this series. Is we could’ve ended up 3 games back if halladay was halladay
Mick-
Not sure if they are better or worse, just different. But I do agree that some weaknesses need to be addressed prior to the trade deadline. But who knows, some other team might just play better than them this year. Or not…how about we wait and watch and enjoy the ride.
Matt,
Its amazing that you can’t manage to write one positive sentence about a team with the best record in baseball but yet somehow come up with endless paragraphs pointing out their flaws….really imaginative work.
Wait let me get this straight – the Yankees were the best team in baseball two days ago, and suddenly now they’re an inconsistent team that might miss the playoffs? I see the same team on the field, the only difference is that they had a bad two days. Calm down, kids.
Exactly, the Yankees have a good record but they aren’t playing like a 41-24 team the majority of these games.
A hot start has kept them in good position despite it, but eventually the excuses don’t mean anything and you have to start playing. It was the “injuries, “but even then you had Teixeira, Jeter, and A-Rod contributing almost nothing for a while. Then those same “injuries” were past and they still have been inconsistent.
Beating bad teams is nice, but they have been inconsistent. If you replace their excellent start with just a good one, they are in 3rd place right now.
The Yankees other than 2 of the last 18 innings have pretty much put up no fight whatsoever in these last 2 games. It’s just 2 games, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was a pathetic performance. Nowhere are we saying it will doom the season, but it was still a terrible job against a team that has been playing .333 ball or so in the last 3 weeks.
They lost 2/3 against the Nationals last year. They made the playoffs, but that doesn’t all of a sudden mean those weren’t bad games. Bad games are bad games, you can’t deny that. If you can’t even admit that these were bad games, then you clearly are just delusional.
Where were the Phillies last fall when it counted?
Too bad the trolls can’t rewrite history.
Get rid of that fat loser Joba now
Gave us no shot to win the game because he decided to not compete on the mound
Get rid of him.

Thank you !
We’re in first place! With a better record than last year when we won the World Series. Can’t we just enjoy it?
my take on the wreck we just saw.
pettitte battled. yankees offense is a sleep. tex and arod have sucked most of the year. do not tell me about rbi’s they have men on base all the time. granderson is not that good… the guy is hittin 240′sish that is not good.
nice miss call at 2nd by another bozo ump. valdez was out by 1.5 feet.
joba did what he does often, suck and not throw strikes.
overall and poor performance…
I’m rooting for the Braves in the NL East. They have Melky and Hinske, two former Yankees that were well liked here. Heyward, Jurrjens, and Hanson are exciting young players, Cox and Chipper are in their last years, and it would be cool to see Wagner actually perform down the stretch like he couldn’t for the Mets and Phillies.
I must be watching some other team. My team has played pretty darn well most of the year, overcoming injuries and slumps to maintain the best or second best record in baseball. They are more than holding their own at this point. There is more than half a season left in which to get healthy and to get out of slumps.
The 2009 team at this time last year was not the team that finished the year. They did not dominate go on a tear until after the ASB. Until then it was very touch and go. Stop revising history.
Tough series. After beating Halladay, you figured they’d get the series at least. It’s disappointing but tomorrow is another day. Most disappointed the bullpen couldn’t hold it, especially after last night. Lot of hard hit balls right at people. Near misses. Sigh.
We might have the most deceiving 16 games over record of all-time.
We accumulated it early. We are 9-14 vs. over .500 teams since the Boston series.
The Orioles saved us from being in 3rd, potentially 4th place. Literally. With an assist to Cleveland.
Or not…how about we wait and watch and enjoy the ride.
==================================
That is a given for me.
Being critical doesn’t make one a defeatist.
If cash doesn’t see the problems, god forgive him and us as Yankee fans.
By the way, on this night last year we had just dropped a series to the Nationals. Most of you were ready to jump off the bridge then as well.

The Philly Phitins,
Lol you don’t even deserve a response but I’ll give you one anyway. The Phillies are 3rd in their division. The Yankees are tied for the best record in the major leagues. The Phillies are barely a .500 team. The Yankees have scored the most runs in baseball. The Philled are #21 in runs scored. The Yankees are also ranked better at pitching. The Yankees are also defending WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!!! Yes I am SOOOOO ashamed of this team. Now why don’t you go celebrate your win. Its going to be the Phillies biggest win of the season.

This probably sounds like a knee jerk comment… and maybe it is.. but Joba needs some work… Is there any way we can send hom to AAA and set him free and let him get his groiove back??
No I am not an alarmist… but I think Joba needs to regain his confidence somehow!!

yeah, Mike, numbers don’t lie.

===============================================
Doreen,
As this team needs to make changes, all I’m sayin.
Arod is clearly not 100%, he might not even be 80%. He had fastballs right over the plate to hit and he can’t drive the ball. I am really surprised he isn’t sitting for another week until the NL games. I hope it doesnt cost him a trip to the DL. Poor Andy he deserved a win tonight. Instead he got a Pena error, the ump missing strikes and instead it was a walk to Ruiz and then the Joba and Marte mess.
The injuries and slumps are killing this offense.
This team has had the intended lineup all together on the field healthy a handful of times.
Andy pitched well enough to win tonight, but with this kind of offensive performance what’s the point.
Texeira has to simply start showing up. He’s healthy. He doesn’t get a pass from me. Arod and Jorge are both not 100% so you cut them some slack, but for Tex to be hitting this poorly is tough to stomach.
Cano needs to be put in the 3rd spot. Texeira will not hit for an average high enough to justify batting him 3rd.
The biggest thing is the team needs to get healthy and they need to get a real DH in here and knock off the rotating DH game that shortens the lineup when Pena and Cervelli have to play.
I hate it when the offense doesn’t show up. The Negative Nates & Nancies get their day under the black cloud.

Doreeen,
What in the world are you talking about? I demand perfection? So because I say a guy didn’t have a good game, I expect perfection?
You don’t need perfection to win games, you just need to not play AWFUL baseball. You can easily win games without being even close to perfect. If you play even OK baseball in a game like tonight, you probably win this game. Yes, good teams lose games, but the last two nights were not just inevitable losses, they were games in which they pretty much did not show up whatsoever.
It’s amazing that the center point of your criticism is something I not only never said tonight, but never in my right mind would even think of saying. Whatever helps you sleep at night I guess. It’s one thing to lose and get outplayed, and it’s another to lose and beat yourself. You “tip your cap” to a guy when he legitimately beats you, not when you made outs consistently on 89 mph sinkers down the middle.
“…….But the Phitins kicked your butt. Mets will beat you too!
We are the Phitins, we kicked Yankees butt with a old man, and a a iffy pitcher.

Trying to save face by taking 2 of 3 from NY in interleague, impressive.
They choked last fall in 6 games, those are the games that will be remembered..
Matt what DOES a 41-24 team play like?
They don’t give style points. this loss is no better or worse than a 2-1 loss, the 9-3 win was no better or worse than a 2-1 win.
the Rays are 41-24 or 41-23. Do THEY play like a 41-23/41-24 team? In what way? And if so, how do we differentiate that in the standings?
“Joba is not = to Hughes.
Burnett is not = to 09 Burnett.
Tex is not = to 09 Tex.
Gardner and Granderson are not = to Damon and Matsui and Melky.
This is a different team , face it.”
I see you conveniently forgot to mention Cano, Pettitte, Hughes, Vazquez, Sabathia, Mitre, Cervelli, and Swisher…the players who IMPROVED from last year.
TB lost too and all is well in the universe. Yankees wipe this bad taste out of your mouth, it’s done.
You win some and you lose some, That’s baseball. badda -bing, -badda- boom.
We can’t go forward looking back, Yankees-phillies series ovah!!
Guess what? Games against sub .500 teams count the same as the ones against winning teams. Stop with the psychobabble analysis. They have winning records against The Red Sox, Minnesota, and Texas who are all pretty good teams.
Joba is not a very good pitcher. Yanks need to move on from him. Trade him or send him to AAA. He can’t handle NYC. Weather it was Joba rules or whatever this kid is done. I hate to say that but he is hurting this team. Can’t count on him. Sometimes it just doesn’t work.

If Tex doesn’t pick it up we aint winning a thing.
Swish and Cano are certainly better but the loss of Damon, Matsui and Melky ripped the heart out of this team.
Talent and heart are two different things, clown.
1b angle was the one that showed the tag. It was in “YES MO”. I just replayed it on my DVR.

It’s the trend, not the record.
And the season is a 162 game trend.
Teixeira is starting to become a concern. He has isolated good games but nothing is ever sustained. Looks like a bad year for him. Arod isn’t %100 and may not be for the rest of the year. That’s your 3 and 4 hitters right there and in some games that’s going to be an issue.
Well, from behind 2nd looking towards 1st., he missed him clearly. Gotta say what I saw. If you saw that angle and can say the same well………….

has anyone looked at june numbers for this team?? absolutely horrible, worst ive seen in years. other than cano .400 and gardner .300+ arod is hitting .270 and EVERYBODY else is hitting between .220 -.240 wow!!!
Yanks are in 1st. place. Will makes moves as needed ! Remember this the Yankees !
57′ Yank,
The tag was on the home plate side of second base and the runner clearly would have shielded you with such an angle. How could you have even seen it? YES showed an angle in which he clearly tagged him on the back of the leg. His pant leg was brushed and billowed a bit as soon as he tagged him, which it wasn’t doing beforehand.
“Well, from behind 2nd looking towards 1st’
That angle he looked safe.
The one that showed It was (I am guessing)was from the Yankee dugout. The ump was in a perfect position because the angle was like looking over his shoulder. One thing lost in all that, was what a great throw that was from Cervelli. It was a ball in the dirt, that was right on the money.
How can u possibly it was a bad angle from behind 2nd. looking directly at 1st. Gap was there!
