Here’s the announcement from the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center.

To help celebrate the end of school, the Yankees’ 2009 World Series trophy will be on display at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center all day on Thursday, June 24.

All visitors are welcome to take a photo next to the sterling silver Tiffany-created trophy, which was cradled by the likes of Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera after the Yankees won their 27th world championship last fall.

The World Series trophy will be on display from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Museum, which is on the campus of Montclair State (NJ) University.

That is awesome. I know that he and his wife have done some great work for thier foundation. All you have to do is check out the pictures of the little kids in his foundation’s website. Makes you proud that Jorge is a Yankee.

There’s usually something going on (no offense to Yogi!), but it’s quiet today.

    **********************
    Of course-that explains it.

I believe AJ’s next outing is against Arizona. That may be just what the doctor ordered to get him back on track.

  17. Ed H. June 17th, 2010 at 12:23 pm

I think that SJ44 is right that AJ is what he is and will not change. I am trying to think of ways that the Yanks can plan for this and compensate effectively.

Perhaps they can keep one of their long relievers, such as Mitre or Aceves (when healthy) stretched out to the point that they are capable of going five innings. When AJ is off it usually shows early. In those games Joe could pull AJ after two innings and replace him with the “super-long man (SLM).” Mitre or Ace could pitch the third through seventh innings and turn it over to the short gus for the eighth and ninth. This would enable Joe to limit the damage that Bad AJ inevitably inflicts upon the team without wrecking the bullpen for a few days. The SLM would function like a sixth starter, ready to step in when necessary to bail out Burnett.

Of course, that would mean that the Yanks would have to carry two long relievers, perhaps Mitre to bail out AJ and Aceves, to flex as either a long or short guy depending upon need, available to go three innings when Mitre has been burned rescuing Burnett. When AJ is on, the SLM would have to do extra bullpen work to stay stretched out.

    What do you guys think?

  18. ac1 June 17th, 2010 at 12:25 pm

I dont see how the rangers benefit from Lowell. They have a DH.

Minny can use him, however that field is huge and Lowell ‘s numbers are inflated from the Tee Ball wall at Fenway.

  28. Noreaster June 17th, 2010 at 12:33 pm

Posada coming off injury and AJ not at his best is a combination we should avoid for awhile. AJ is going to need a more athletic backstop until he gets his curve ball under control. I’m looking forward to Pettitte tonight, I guess we’ll have Cerv behind the plate also. Too bad Joe didn’t flip/flop our catchers.

  32. Yankee Trader June 17th, 2010 at 12:44 pm

Red Sox picked up 1st baseman Ryan Shealy who was recently waived. Lowell is probably good as gone.

Girardi could skip AJ’s next start as the Yankees only two off days are the 24th and 28th, until the All Star break.

Lefty Renyel Pinto was DFA’d by the Marlins. Wasn’t the Pinto a subcompact car?? This Pinto is like 6’4″ 280 lbs.

Some good pitching matchups tonight. Haren goes against Lackey and Hudson against Shields. Yankees could be in sole possession of first with the best ML win % after tonight!! :)

  33. upstate kate June 17th, 2010 at 12:47 pm

why would Girardi want to skip AJ’s next start? If anyone’s start should be skipped, it should be Hughes, to keep his innings limit down.

Ditto. Cervelli wouldn’t have made a difference! AJ basically has only two pitches. His curveball was nonexistant and the Phillies knew that they’d get a steady diet of fastballs. Plus he didn’t get ahead in the count and he doesn’t hold runners well.

Remember Iwamura, the regular 2B for the Rays a few years back? Pittsburgh traded for him last year, I think it was, despite his having a multimillion dollar contract. MLBTR is reporting that he’s just been DFA’d.

Released by the Pirates. Now, that’s falling off a cliff…

  41. SJ44 June 17th, 2010 at 12:53 pm

They don’t need to skip AJ’s starts.

This is where GM’s, managers and fans have a disconnect.

If a player is going through a rough spell, a fans first thought is, “bench him, trade him, change the batting order, skip a turn”, etc.

A manager can’t think that way. He has to think long term.

The Yankees need AJ Burnett to get back to being an effective starting pitcher. To do so, you don’t skip him. You work with him and keep running him out there.

Its a LONG season. We are only in Mid-June. Still plenty of time for AJ to put together a string of good starts to help the team. Just as he did to start the season and just as he did for stretches of last season.

Think more long view instead of short view. It not only keeps panic to minimum, its more in line to how managers and GM’s think about their teams.

    Kate,

You nailed it. Some folks are acting surprised at that simple fact.

He’s an inconsistent pitcher. That’s been his MO his entire career.

I fail to see how last night changes anything.

He stunk. That’s the way it is.

Next start, he could dominate. If he does, will that make him a “great pitcher”?

No. It will just mean he had a good start.

As you said, he is who he is. Just take it as that and move on because at 16.5 million a year, he ain’t goin’ anywhere.

They did do a great job last night. We were fortunate, as neither of them has been consistent in their effectiveness this year. In my 12:23 post, I was thinking that Mitre has lots of experience as a starter and has been good this year. It would be like having six starters, with one of them available to bail out AJ for up to five innings, when needed, every fifth day.

I don’t agree that Posada didn’t affect AJ last night. First inning, AJ is lights out. Second inning, AJ is bouncing curveballs and Posada is kicking them all over the place. AJ’s stuff comes and goes, but if his catcher is not getting the ball back to him or properly handling him he is toast. I’m not blaming Posada for the rough outing, ultimately AJ is getting paid to win games, but I am saying that Posada is not the right guy to have behind the plate when AJ’s curveball is not under control. I love Posada, but you have to admit he isn’t the best ‘receiver’. I’ve seen him miss a pitch from Mo and getting hit in the mask.

  66. SJ44 June 17th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

How do you know when AJ’s curveball is on or off? AJ doesn’t even know from start to start.

Posada isn’t to blame for AJ. Neither is any catcher.

He’s pitched like this his entire career. Nothing is different in NY.

This is who he is as a pitcher.

The sooner folks grasp that concept the time will come they stop blaming the catcher for AJ being AJ.

Did you put the line up up here anywhere yesterday?

I had an unexpected call away from home yesterday, so I didn’t officially open the game, but whenI got home, I did take whatever lineups were posted and counted the results. Usually, once someone posts a lineup, there’s no real need to open the game, it sort of starts itself sometimes.

SJ44, I’m not saying it’s Posada’s fault…I’m just saying he doesn’t help AJ out with his poor receiving skills. Posada never was very nimble and last night he couldn’t even catch a pitch out. AJ is soft, there is no excuse for that, but Posada shouldn’t catch AJ until he is fully healthy if we can avoid it.

Last night, in the first inning, I mentioned that that curve ball was all over the place. He threw 19 pitches. You could tell that it could be a tough night when Burnett hit Utley on an 0-2 pitch in the back foot. With the speed and spin on that ball, once it hits the dirt, that thing could go anywhere. Once he feels that the curve is uncontrollable, he’ll stop using it.

  73. Yankee Trader June 17th, 2010 at 1:25 pm

    SJ44-

You’re right. Other than the 18-9 winning average during the 2008 season, after which the Yankees signed him, looking at his situational stats his BA against, hit batters, stolen bases against have remained constant the last three years.

Questions? Did he ever throw a changeup last night? Wasn’t his velocity better in 2008?
