Hughes being skipped

Phil Hughes will have his next start skipped. The move is strictly to cut back on his innings.

He will make three more starts, not four, before the all-star break.

I agree CB, however I do think the yanks may want Brackman, if he continues to throw this well with this kind of control, to see tougher hitters as early as this season….

Besides Banuelos will need a spot in a couple of weeks so a Brackman promotion would make sense if he’s throwing well( not a great start by him last night though…)

    If both Brackman and Bettances stay the whole season in Tampa then imagine how unfair it will be for the FSL the second half of the season facing;

    Brackman
    Betttances
    Banuelos
    Stoneburner
    Warren

    talk about stacked!

It’s the right move. They had to skip Hughes soon anyways.

  9. Jerkface June 21st, 2010 at 6:54 pm

You’ve already affected the stats, probably ruined them for good

  10. This is on Cashman! June 21st, 2010 at 6:54 pm

It makes sense. Hughes is pitching well right now. They don’t want to run into a problem at the end of the season where they can’t pitch him because he’s close to his limit. Skip him now so that you can use him later.

  11. mick June 21st, 2010 at 6:55 pm

Hughes skipped as I called it….also gives him the 7/11 game off (when he goes 7/10)….a day off before he starts the ASG.

I’m fine with Brackman going to AA and as a fan I’d love to see it. It’s just probably isn’t all that important.

If he throws the ball well – it’s not getting hit.

If the yankees feel he’s ready for AA by all means he should go.

I was more pointing out that with guys with plus stuff and those kinds of frames their success has more to do with what they do than what the level of competition they execute against.

In some ways, I more concerned about them doing well this year at whatever level than them doing well against AA players.

If they’re mechanics are good and they can repeat them they’ll get out AA hitters out in spaces.

  19. Apple byte June 21st, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Hughes will keep stretched with an extra bullpen session. Mitre must be close to ready to get Phil’s start.

The ball really explodes out of his hand.

Mr. Franco, how about passing on a million bucks or so

  24. Patrick June 21st, 2010 at 7:00 pm

    CB,

I’m not sure I agree. A guy with great stuff like Brackman could conceivably dominate A-ball based purely on his stuff. As long as he throws it over (or near) the plate, he’ll get outs. But when you start getting closer to the big leagues, the strike zone shrinks and the hitters get better.

Now, we know that Brackman has improved his control, he throws a lot more strikes now. But it’s hard to say whether they are good strikes until he faces stiffer competition.

  25. Giuseppe Franco June 21st, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Mitre must be close to ready to get Phil’s start.

    ———

I don’t think Mitre will get a start. They’ll probably just go with Sabathia because of the off day.

Patrick, SportsGeek does. He is of the opinion that commend should be made in the thread in which they are relevant rather than the most current thread.

I know. My post was total sarcasm. It sucks for everyone associated with the Yanks but I see the father’s concerns too.

I remember the old man is some kind of millionaire so it’s not like the kid really needed the money.

Unless he comes down with injury issues, he’ll get his cash when he’s chosen in the Top 5 of the 201? draft.

  31. Joe from Long Island June 21st, 2010 at 7:05 pm

One way to get over Gerrit Cole is to look at Brackman and Betances, I guess. At least with those guys, you know they want to be there.

  32. Phil the Thrill June 21st, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Delayed start to the Betances game. Scranton is underway. Nova on the bump.

  33. CB June 21st, 2010 at 7:08 pm

    Patrick-

That’s true but the question is how important are any of those issues to sort out this season? I don’t think they’re very important compared to the importance of how the throws and how he repeats his delivery.

Those are factors that are independent of outcome and competition. The coaching staff can judge his mechanics just by watching him.

As I said, if the organization feels it’s time for him to go – he should go. But I wouldn’t push him to go just based on the results he’s putting up.

Learning to repeat your mechanics is probably easier to do at the lower levels. It would be very negative for his development if he went to AA, gave up more hits and tried to compensate with the way he throws the ball to put up better results. Say he’s having trouble running the ball in on left handers, for example. He may be more willing and comfortable to do that in A ball than AA. He might just avoid it in AA.

He’s still at the point where he’s learning to throw. Learning to pitch is the next stage – for both brackman and betances. But they both need to work on throwing because if that’s not absolutely dialed down they won’t be that great in the majors even if they learn how to pitch better.

And given how wild he was last season, Brackman’s ultimate success is going to depend on repeating his mechanics and how he throws.

But as I said he very well may be at the point where he’s ready to work on those issues at AA then by all means he should go.

  34. Patrick June 21st, 2010 at 7:10 pm

CB….He has one thing in mind when he takes the hill……Attack hitters with his late moving heater…..Lot like Phil , Cole just doesn’t have the pinpoint control like Hughes yet……I don’t Cashman gets another crack at him next season

I’m hearing top 10 pick, maybe better for Cole. But who knows? Maybe he drops.. even if he does do we really want the Yanks to reward him for burning them a few years ago?

In the unlikely event he drops to the Yanks he’d instantly be our best pitching prospect but the last thing I want to do is reward that bastard.

“He has one thing in mind when he takes the hill……Attack hitters with his late moving heater….”

    Pat M.-

The combination of velocity and movement is extremely impressive. The ball explodes out of his hand and through the zone.

But when I’ve seen him throw he does make me concerned about his command. It’s really not great. Now that’s the case for a lot of kids, but with his arm action, it’s more of an issue because there may be an aspect of his mechanics which puts an upper bound for how good his command can be.

He’s been very good in college and he’ll go probably top 5 next draft if he’s healthy but he’s still very much a thrower with plus plus stuff and mediocre command.

And I don’t know if you could or would want to change the way he throws.

  41. MTU (aka GBURL) June 21st, 2010 at 7:18 pm

Gerritt Cole will rue the day he refused to don the Pinstripes.

    Sounds good Anyway.

  42. Patrick June 21st, 2010 at 7:18 pm

In Brackman’s case I understand why the Yanks might want to be conservative with him. Two sport athlete without much pitching experience, coming off a big injury, huge frame leads to tough mechanics. Three big reasons to hold him back and really hammer out his mechanics / build confidence.

But it’s reaching the point where he has to move on IMO. Sounds like that’s the case so it’s not a big deal either way.

  43. Pat M. June 21st, 2010 at 7:19 pm

I think the Yanks would welcome another shot at him……The family does have money…..Cole wanted to sign with the Yanks, it was his father who pulled the plug……

Steve Phillips is an idiot. In the last week or two, he said he’d trade Strasburg for Oswalt.

Cash refused to trade Hughes for Santana despite the risks and pressure from some fans and Hank the idiot. Yet he traded IPK despite his loyalty to him.

So I don’t think Phillips’s comments have much relevance to the Yankees’ situation.

I don’t think Cole makes it past the Tigers or Red Sox if signing bonus is the reason he drops. They’ll pay above slot to him to keep from the Yankees.

Remember how Gammons almost busted a blood vessel on camera when the Yankees drafted Cole? The only way that happened was if the Red Sox were hot and heavy for him and wanted him bad.

I can’t imagine he gets by them again and we’ll always have a better record than them so they’ll pick before us except if they lose their picks in signing type A’s.

  54. Patrick June 21st, 2010 at 7:26 pm

    Rich,

    True enough.

I think Cash generally does a good job hanging on to prospects that hit and getting rid of those that don’t. He usually gets pretty good value on trades.

Very good job hanging on to Hughes and Kennedy didn’t have a spot on this team long term. He’s a middle of the rotation starter in the NL at best. His numbers now look good but his FIP is at 4.83. I hope Kennedy’s success continues because I like him but I don’t think he’s all of a sudden a #1 or #2 pitcher.

  55. BIG AL June 21st, 2010 at 7:26 pm

A good education = a good job = good income. So Cole makes 8-10 mil in baseball and flames out, while getting his education in the off season. 10 mil over 40 years = $250/year. So why is dad not letting his son live his dream, the prestige of a big college ed? I’d let my son sign with the Yankees, after he committed to getting his education as well, just in case.

I don’t think you can punish the kid for something his father made him do.

If Cole were to ever drop to the Yankees (almost no chance), they would be obligated to take him because he has a ton of talent.

But to let the blame lie with the father is wrong. Cole could have done what he wanted to do and he decided to go to college, which is fine. What’s not fine is keeping that desire a secret until the Yanks wasted a pick on him. And we don’t know the full story, the rumor is his dad pushed him to college but who knows?

Honestly, it doesn’t matter now. The Yanks wouldn’t have Heathcott if Cole had signed so who knows? Maybe Heathcott ends up being the better player.

You are a moron if you think montero isn’t very good. He has a fantastic bat that is starting to come around (beforethe start of today’s game he was 14 for his last 38). And since when does he have attitude problems. He did not run out a ball, like everyone does once in their career, and was apolegetic about it. Big Al, you are misinformed.

Remember John Lannan, the LHP who shut the Yankees down last year at the stadium? Some thought he was a rising, young pitching star in the game.

Was sent down to AA today.

Shows you just how much of a struggle the game can be.

  90. Phil the Thrill June 21st, 2010 at 7:57 pm

    MTU,

No prob. We have a bunch of pieces who will be major leaguers but not good enough to be Yankees. But we shouldn’t start trading them unless there is someone good enough to be a Yankee available. It’s a pretty simple standard. We don’t always follow it, but we should be moving more and more in that direction.

  91. Tom in NJ June 21st, 2010 at 7:57 pm

    SJ, Rick Porcello, too.

    Phil-

I agree. We have many potential attractive trade chips. I’m confident that the Yankees have scouted themselves thoroughly and know which ones to hold and which ones to fold, and when.

It will be interesting to see how it goes down and what it brings back.

We’ve got gold in them thar farms. :)

  94. Phil the Thrill June 21st, 2010 at 8:02 pm

I’m in no rush to make any trades this year, and would rather deal in the offseason.

  95. Joe from Long Island June 21st, 2010 at 8:03 pm

Lannan was having a rough year. I don’t know what was going on, of course, but, that’s surprising to me, given how good he looked last year with his off-speed stuff. We were also talking about Porcello earlier today.

It certainly is a tough game. Must be very humbling.

  96. SJ44 June 21st, 2010 at 8:03 pm

    Very true re: Porcello.

It’s why it’s wise to ease off the throttle on predicting prospect greatness.

Accumulate as many as possible and if 10% make it, you are doing a great job.

Nova’s getting a lot of strikeouts (5) on pitches in the dirt. Montero’s blocked all but one. Close to 10 pitches in the dirt, but, Montero’s doing it right. Instead of trying to scoop everything up, he’s using that big body to keep them in font of him.

    MTU,

I think we’ll land the big kid from Mexico, and perhaps Taiwanese SS. With the increased scrutiny and ridiculous standards that have been introduced in the Dominican market, the Yanks might just bide their time there. They have absolutely cleaned up in the post July 2 market over the last two or three years, and I see that trend continuing. They will probably have something to announce on 7/2, though. We’ll see. I’ll be writing what I know about it on my blog as the day approaches.

  116. CB June 21st, 2010 at 8:17 pm

Regarding Porcello – think we’ll see some follow up from Bill Madden to the column he wrote in praise of the Tigers development program for Rick compared to Joba. One can criticize how the yankees handled Joba but it was remarkable for people to deem Porcello’s program not only a success but as a model for others to follow:

By contrast, the Detroit Tigers, the Yankees’ most likely first-round playoff opponent, took a much bolder and more consistent approach with their young pitching prodigy, Rick Porcello, and it has resulted in a 14-victory success while helping to solidify their rotation in the September stretch and presumably beyond….

All agreed that Porcello would remain on a limit of 80-100 pitches per game, but how to keep his innings from soaring over the course of a full season? Instead of abruptly cutting him back to seven-eight-nine days’ rest in between starts, as the Yankees did with Chamberlain in August just after he had gone on a roll, the Tigers elected to shut down Porcello for 16 days around the All-Star break….

The result was that when he resumed pitching on July 21, he was refreshed, and he has seemed to get stronger since then with a 3-1 record and 3.60 ERA in September….

While it would seem, in that respect, they’re somewhat different pitchers, there is something to be said for the fact that the Tigers kept Porcello on a consistent conservation plan and it’s worked out exactly as they had hoped. By season’s end, he will have increased his innings count by about 50 from the year before while also increasing his stamina and confidence for the postseason….

“What you have to take into consideration,” said Dombrowski, “is the fact that Rick is smart and has been able to make adjustments as the year has gone on, mixing in a four-seamer with his sinker, changing from a curve to a slider, and he throws strikes, which helps limit his pitches.”

There were dozens of these kinds of articles written about how great the Tigers handled Porcello.

Now, not so much. Amazing how you can’t judge the success of a pitchers development before his rookie season is completed, particularly when he’s 20.

I don’t think the Yankees have any high impact trade targets. If they want to add offense or pitching they can do it with money alone in the off season because of Crawford and Lee.

The bullpen is a different story.

There are no lights out relievers that can be added via free agency after the season.

Therefore it’s more likely that a high impact trade target is a bullpen arm if there is a trade target at all. The pen is the one area that can’t be strengthened in the off season through free agency.

If the plan is to stick with Joba in the pen and hope that he can become a closer then I can see the Yankees adding lesser relievers like Putz. If anything the Yankees might try to tweak the pen by trading off lesser prospects like Noesi, Nova or McAllister.

  124. MTU (aka GBURL) June 21st, 2010 at 8:25 pm

    Blake-

I agree with you about Montero’s catching. When I saw him in ST he looked surprisingly good. A lot more agile than people would think, and a very strong and accurate arm.

People don’t look past the disco and realize how many awesome songs the Bee Gees have

As a Yankee fan and TCU graduate, I propose an emergency exception allowing or, if necessary, compelling Cole to sign with the Yankees in the next ten minutes. Seems fair.
