Phil Hughes will have his next start skipped. The move is strictly to cut back on his innings.
He will make three more starts, not four, before the all-star break.
repost
I agree CB, however I do think the yanks may want Brackman, if he continues to throw this well with this kind of control, to see tougher hitters as early as this season….
Besides Banuelos will need a spot in a couple of weeks so a Brackman promotion would make sense if he’s throwing well( not a great start by him last night though…)
If both Brackman and Bettances stay the whole season in Tampa then imagine how unfair it will be for the FSL the second half of the season facing;
Brackman
Betttances
Banuelos
Stoneburner
Warren
talk about stacked!
Brackman
Betttances
Banuelos
The Killer B’s?
Does this mean I see Burnett instead of Sabathia at Dodger Stadium Saturday?
Banuelos topped out at 95 today.
Avoiding hitting with Hughes I think maybe
I have things to say about the lineup but I don’t want to throw off Sports Geek’s comment calculations.
Or do I?
Who does comment calculations?
It’s the right move. They had to skip Hughes soon anyways.
You’ve already affected the stats, probably ruined them for good
It makes sense. Hughes is pitching well right now. They don’t want to run into a problem at the end of the season where they can’t pitch him because he’s close to his limit. Skip him now so that you can use him later.
Hughes skipped as I called it….also gives him the 7/11 game off (when he goes 7/10)….a day off before he starts the ASG.

When I read that this morning I thought there’s someone with too much time on their hands.
does banuelos have good control?
Looks like our strategy vs the Philly Phool worked!
smart!
I’m fine with Brackman going to AA and as a fan I’d love to see it. It’s just probably isn’t all that important.
If he throws the ball well – it’s not getting hit.
If the yankees feel he’s ready for AA by all means he should go.
I was more pointing out that with guys with plus stuff and those kinds of frames their success has more to do with what they do than what the level of competition they execute against.
In some ways, I more concerned about them doing well this year at whatever level than them doing well against AA players.
If they’re mechanics are good and they can repeat them they’ll get out AA hitters out in spaces.
Hughes will keep stretched with an extra bullpen session. Mitre must be close to ready to get Phil’s start.

Sigh. The one that got away.
I don’t know about that kid’s dad, though. What kind of father makes his kid get an education? LOL.
No need for Mitre.
CC will be on 5th day
“G. Cole throws tonight for UCLA…….Heartbreak hotel”
The ball really explodes out of his hand.
Longish arm action though.
Mr. Franco, how about passing on a million bucks or so
CB,
I’m not sure I agree. A guy with great stuff like Brackman could conceivably dominate A-ball based purely on his stuff. As long as he throws it over (or near) the plate, he’ll get outs. But when you start getting closer to the big leagues, the strike zone shrinks and the hitters get better.
Now, we know that Brackman has improved his control, he throws a lot more strikes now. But it’s hard to say whether they are good strikes until he faces stiffer competition.
Mitre must be close to ready to get Phil’s start.
———
I don’t think Mitre will get a start. They’ll probably just go with Sabathia because of the off day.
Gerrit Cole is a BEAST!!!!
Too bad his Dad got in the way but at the same time as a dad I understand completely if he felt that College was the right move for his kid….
BTW
Noesi looks very very good so far in Trenton….

———–
I know. My post was total sarcasm. It sucks for everyone associated with the Yanks but I see the father’s concerns too.
I remember the old man is some kind of millionaire so it’s not like the kid really needed the money.
Unless he comes down with injury issues, he’ll get his cash when he’s chosen in the Top 5 of the 201? draft.
One way to get over Gerrit Cole is to look at Brackman and Betances, I guess. At least with those guys, you know they want to be there.
Delayed start to the Betances game. Scranton is underway. Nova on the bump.
Patrick-
That’s true but the question is how important are any of those issues to sort out this season? I don’t think they’re very important compared to the importance of how the throws and how he repeats his delivery.
Those are factors that are independent of outcome and competition. The coaching staff can judge his mechanics just by watching him.
As I said, if the organization feels it’s time for him to go – he should go. But I wouldn’t push him to go just based on the results he’s putting up.
Learning to repeat your mechanics is probably easier to do at the lower levels. It would be very negative for his development if he went to AA, gave up more hits and tried to compensate with the way he throws the ball to put up better results. Say he’s having trouble running the ball in on left handers, for example. He may be more willing and comfortable to do that in A ball than AA. He might just avoid it in AA.
He’s still at the point where he’s learning to throw. Learning to pitch is the next stage – for both brackman and betances. But they both need to work on throwing because if that’s not absolutely dialed down they won’t be that great in the majors even if they learn how to pitch better.
And given how wild he was last season, Brackman’s ultimate success is going to depend on repeating his mechanics and how he throws.
But as I said he very well may be at the point where he’s ready to work on those issues at AA then by all means he should go.
CB….He has one thing in mind when he takes the hill……Attack hitters with his late moving heater…..Lot like Phil , Cole just doesn’t have the pinpoint control like Hughes yet……I don’t Cashman gets another crack at him next season
—
I’m hearing top 10 pick, maybe better for Cole. But who knows? Maybe he drops.. even if he does do we really want the Yanks to reward him for burning them a few years ago?
In the unlikely event he drops to the Yanks he’d instantly be our best pitching prospect but the last thing I want to do is reward that bastard.
I’m skeptical that we will see Phil’s change much this season.

As Steve Phillips has often said, “prospects get GMs fired.” You tend to try and project them to be stars (or even ML regulars) and 80% flame out before they ever hit the show. And then you look back at deals you could have included them in and shake your head.
Brackman is beating rookies 5 years younger. I mean it’s good he’s actually being successful but he really needs to hit double A
Rich-
“I’m skeptical that we will see Phil’s change much this season.”
I disagree. Phil has already “changed” . Into a budding star.
“He has one thing in mind when he takes the hill……Attack hitters with his late moving heater….”
Pat M.-
The combination of velocity and movement is extremely impressive. The ball explodes out of his hand and through the zone.
But when I’ve seen him throw he does make me concerned about his command. It’s really not great. Now that’s the case for a lot of kids, but with his arm action, it’s more of an issue because there may be an aspect of his mechanics which puts an upper bound for how good his command can be.
He’s been very good in college and he’ll go probably top 5 next draft if he’s healthy but he’s still very much a thrower with plus plus stuff and mediocre command.
And I don’t know if you could or would want to change the way he throws.
Gerritt Cole will rue the day he refused to don the Pinstripes.
Sounds good Anyway.
In Brackman’s case I understand why the Yanks might want to be conservative with him. Two sport athlete without much pitching experience, coming off a big injury, huge frame leads to tough mechanics. Three big reasons to hold him back and really hammer out his mechanics / build confidence.
But it’s reaching the point where he has to move on IMO. Sounds like that’s the case so it’s not a big deal either way.
I think the Yanks would welcome another shot at him……The family does have money…..Cole wanted to sign with the Yanks, it was his father who pulled the plug……
“As Steve Phillips has often said, “prospects get GMs fired.” You tend to try and project them to be stars (or even ML regulars) and 80% flame out before they ever hit the show. And then you look back at deals you could have included them in and shake your head.”
Steve Phillips is an idiot. In the last week or two, he said he’d trade Strasburg for Oswalt.
Cash refused to trade Hughes for Santana despite the risks and pressure from some fans and Hank the idiot. Yet he traded IPK despite his loyalty to him.
So I don’t think Phillips’s comments have much relevance to the Yankees’ situation.
Phillips is one of the stupidest people on Earth. Anyone quoting him for wisdom is part of the same club.
I think the yankees need to get Brackman’s feet wet in AA this year, so that he is a possible call up next year.
Nick,
That post by Sports Geek was a good laugh, thanks for the link
I thought maybe you were referring to randy and his tendency to count trisha’s (and others’) posts and call her out for posting too often.
If Cole wants to make good, just have Boras spread the word that his client won’t sign with any other team but the Yankees and will go to Japan or Taiwan to ply his trade if anyone else drafts him.
Completely preposterous, I know.
“I disagree. Phil has already “changed” . Into a budding star.”
*cue the old David Bowie song*
I don’t think Cole makes it past the Tigers or Red Sox if signing bonus is the reason he drops. They’ll pay above slot to him to keep from the Yankees.
Remember how Gammons almost busted a blood vessel on camera when the Yankees drafted Cole? The only way that happened was if the Red Sox were hot and heavy for him and wanted him bad.
I can’t imagine he gets by them again and we’ll always have a better record than them so they’ll pick before us except if they lose their picks in signing type A’s.

Phil The Thrill — Really like your blog! Although as a long suffering Knick fan, not sure Lebron is in the bag.
He may just be the silver spoon version of AJ Burnett, but I think they’d take him again.
Rich,
True enough.
I think Cash generally does a good job hanging on to prospects that hit and getting rid of those that don’t. He usually gets pretty good value on trades.
Very good job hanging on to Hughes and Kennedy didn’t have a spot on this team long term. He’s a middle of the rotation starter in the NL at best. His numbers now look good but his FIP is at 4.83. I hope Kennedy’s success continues because I like him but I don’t think he’s all of a sudden a #1 or #2 pitcher.
A good education = a good job = good income. So Cole makes 8-10 mil in baseball and flames out, while getting his education in the off season. 10 mil over 40 years = $250/year. So why is dad not letting his son live his dream, the prestige of a big college ed? I’d let my son sign with the Yankees, after he committed to getting his education as well, just in case.

If Cole were to ever drop to the Yankees (almost no chance), they would be obligated to take him because he has a ton of talent.
But to let the blame lie with the father is wrong. Cole could have done what he wanted to do and he decided to go to college, which is fine. What’s not fine is keeping that desire a secret until the Yanks wasted a pick on him. And we don’t know the full story, the rumor is his dad pushed him to college but who knows?
Honestly, it doesn’t matter now. The Yanks wouldn’t have Heathcott if Cole had signed so who knows? Maybe Heathcott ends up being the better player.

BIG AL, we generally try not to draw any deep negative conclusions about Montero. Still very young.
MTU, I have no idea. I just know he’ll never be in the rotation. I’m not keen on pitching “trade ideas.”
You are a moron if you think montero isn’t very good. He has a fantastic bat that is starting to come around (beforethe start of today’s game he was 14 for his last 38). And since when does he have attitude problems. He did not run out a ball, like everyone does once in their career, and was apolegetic about it. Big Al, you are misinformed.
“You tend to try and project them to be stars (or even ML regulars) and 80% flame out before they ever hit the show.”
That’s why you collect as many high-level prospects as possible. If 1 out of 5 pan out, then you have the best farm system in baseball. It’s more like 1 out of 10, or 15.
Phil-
Thanks. No problem. Just passing some time until the ML game starts.
Remember John Lannan, the LHP who shut the Yankees down last year at the stadium? Some thought he was a rising, young pitching star in the game.
Was sent down to AA today.
Shows you just how much of a struggle the game can be.
MTU,
No prob. We have a bunch of pieces who will be major leaguers but not good enough to be Yankees. But we shouldn’t start trading them unless there is someone good enough to be a Yankee available. It’s a pretty simple standard. We don’t always follow it, but we should be moving more and more in that direction.
SJ, Rick Porcello, too.
Rick Porcello is a success even if he never pitches another inning in the bigs.
(Youk takedown)
Phil-
I agree. We have many potential attractive trade chips. I’m confident that the Yankees have scouted themselves thoroughly and know which ones to hold and which ones to fold, and when.
It will be interesting to see how it goes down and what it brings back.
We’ve got gold in them thar farms.
I’m in no rush to make any trades this year, and would rather deal in the offseason.
Lannan was having a rough year. I don’t know what was going on, of course, but, that’s surprising to me, given how good he looked last year with his off-speed stuff. We were also talking about Porcello earlier today.
It certainly is a tough game. Must be very humbling.
Very true re: Porcello.
It’s why it’s wise to ease off the throttle on predicting prospect greatness.
Accumulate as many as possible and if 10% make it, you are doing a great job.
Only thing tougher than playing baseball is apparently breaking par on Sunday at Pebble.
Phil-
What’s your take on this year’s IFA situation ?
Will the Yankees be heavy players and if so are there any names popping up on the radar ? Anything your hearing ?

“Only thing tougher than playing baseball is apparently breaking par on Sunday at Pebble.”
No Blake. Getting a beer in the middle of a desert is harder. Trust me. I know.
When Tex was 12 he tried to change his name to kurt in honor of kurt cobain.
Nova’s getting a lot of strikeouts (5) on pitches in the dirt. Montero’s blocked all but one. Close to 10 pitches in the dirt, but, Montero’s doing it right. Instead of trying to scoop everything up, he’s using that big body to keep them in font of him.
Francessa using porcello as an example all last year to burry joba without understanding that it takes time with no guarantees.
Not a word from francessa about him now.
GB-
And a big body it is. Plenty of surface area to block with.
MTU,
lol, probably true.
MTU,
I think we’ll land the big kid from Mexico, and perhaps Taiwanese SS. With the increased scrutiny and ridiculous standards that have been introduced in the Dominican market, the Yanks might just bide their time there. They have absolutely cleaned up in the post July 2 market over the last two or three years, and I see that trend continuing. They will probably have something to announce on 7/2, though. We’ll see. I’ll be writing what I know about it on my blog as the day approaches.
“Montero’s doing it right. Instead of trying to scoop everything up, he’s using that big body to keep them in font of him.”
I’ve been impressed the limited amount I’ve seen him catch.
Montero has been hitting much better as of late.If he can put a few week streak together his numbers could look ok.
Pat m,
Maybe I’m giving too much credit to Cole for screwing over the Yanks. I don’t mind that he didn’t sign, just that he didn’t make his intentions known earlier in the process.
Nick,
I can’t deny that being a star athlete at UCLA is a good “career” move. There is a lot of talent out there

The Tampa game is postponed. No Dellin tonight.
Regarding Porcello – think we’ll see some follow up from Bill Madden to the column he wrote in praise of the Tigers development program for Rick compared to Joba. One can criticize how the yankees handled Joba but it was remarkable for people to deem Porcello’s program not only a success but as a model for others to follow:
By contrast, the Detroit Tigers, the Yankees’ most likely first-round playoff opponent, took a much bolder and more consistent approach with their young pitching prodigy, Rick Porcello, and it has resulted in a 14-victory success while helping to solidify their rotation in the September stretch and presumably beyond….
All agreed that Porcello would remain on a limit of 80-100 pitches per game, but how to keep his innings from soaring over the course of a full season? Instead of abruptly cutting him back to seven-eight-nine days’ rest in between starts, as the Yankees did with Chamberlain in August just after he had gone on a roll, the Tigers elected to shut down Porcello for 16 days around the All-Star break….
The result was that when he resumed pitching on July 21, he was refreshed, and he has seemed to get stronger since then with a 3-1 record and 3.60 ERA in September….
While it would seem, in that respect, they’re somewhat different pitchers, there is something to be said for the fact that the Tigers kept Porcello on a consistent conservation plan and it’s worked out exactly as they had hoped. By season’s end, he will have increased his innings count by about 50 from the year before while also increasing his stamina and confidence for the postseason….
“What you have to take into consideration,” said Dombrowski, “is the fact that Rick is smart and has been able to make adjustments as the year has gone on, mixing in a four-seamer with his sinker, changing from a curve to a slider, and he throws strikes, which helps limit his pitches.”
There were dozens of these kinds of articles written about how great the Tigers handled Porcello.
Now, not so much. Amazing how you can’t judge the success of a pitchers development before his rookie season is completed, particularly when he’s 20.

I was turning 14. And Tex is the same age as us.
The Teixera special on MLB Network is pretty interesting, talks about lots of stuff from Mattingly to switch hitting and how hitting right handed comes much easier to him even today.
Erica,
Thats just what he said on the show…he could have had his years mixed up.
I don’t think the Yankees have any high impact trade targets. If they want to add offense or pitching they can do it with money alone in the off season because of Crawford and Lee.
The bullpen is a different story.
There are no lights out relievers that can be added via free agency after the season.
Therefore it’s more likely that a high impact trade target is a bullpen arm if there is a trade target at all. The pen is the one area that can’t be strengthened in the off season through free agency.
If the plan is to stick with Joba in the pen and hope that he can become a closer then I can see the Yankees adding lesser relievers like Putz. If anything the Yankees might try to tweak the pen by trading off lesser prospects like Noesi, Nova or McAllister.
Blake-
I agree with you about Montero’s catching. When I saw him in ST he looked surprisingly good. A lot more agile than people would think, and a very strong and accurate arm.
GB says Wynegar is working with him. That will help to get him refined.
The bat is Thor’s hammer.
I like Nirvano, too. But not that much.
SI off to slow starts with the bats – aside from the suddenly somewhat interesting Garrison Lassiter.
trading for relievers is generally a fool’s errand. We have enough arms around to find another reliever to two.

MTU,
I like the Dolly Parton version of their most popular song more.
**************
Don’t make fun of Dolly!
I haven’t YET read that article.
I’m under a lot of pressure up here in Marin County.
Brackman
Betttances
Banuelos
Stoneburner
Warren
3 of those 5 should be on the cusp of being in the Bronx sometime in 2012.
MTU,
I was fumbling around Youtube when I was designing a playlist for a 2008 election night bash and I wanted a Whitney Houston song, “The Greatest Love” (I think that’s the name) and then I came across her song “I will always love you” from the Body Guard with Kevin Costner.
Then I came across Dolly who is the original performer of “I will always love you”

A beautiful song.
Just skimming through a bit.
What happened to Rick Porcello?
I was in a band in high school.
It was me and 3 native Americans. They wanted to call the band the Navajo word for ‘White Devil’ because it sounded ‘menacing’
Well, they didn’t know the Navajo word and their folks wouldn’t tell them so we called ourselves ‘White Devil in Navajo”. It didn’t have the same effect.
Sent down to the minors doreen
Bret-
You must have ecclectic tastes as I do. How else could you alternate between heavy metal and Dolly Parton ?
You are a complex person grasshopper.

About Dolly-
4 Words- “Here You Come Again”
4 more Words- “Islands in the Stream”
Tom-
Cool story. Why didn’t they just call the band “Odd Man Out” ?
Tom-
Did you know that some Indians will not let you take their picture because they believe that it robs them of their soul ?
BloggingBombers Wait a second … Rodrigo Lopez is starting for the D-Backs tonight? Man, I thought I was done with watching that guy pitch. #OriolesScrub

BryanHoch Fans are pumped up here at Chase Field for the Yankees’ arrival. Some of the loudest BP cheers we’ve heard this year on the road.

No more knocks on The Club until you do Mister!!!
Doreen,
Porcello was sent down to AA or AAA.
Thanks Carl.
That’s a bit of a surprise; I wasn’t following him, thinking he was “established.”
Doreen.
Hope you had a good day. If I had known you would be sitting at Starbucks for a long time, I could have come down and had an iced coffee with you
SAS -
thank you, too.
It was lovely in White Plains this afternoon. It was lovely EVERYWHERE this afternoon.
Erica,
Islands in the Stream. My dad was a huge Bee Gees fan.
Did Dolly Parton perform that song solo or just with the Bee Gees?
I love the Bee Gees version.
Answered my own question.
Here she is with Kenny Rogers…

Scouting report on Yankees from http://www. azcentral.com picture of showing AJ choking himself top right quadrant.
.
Yankees have 2nd offense in AL with 5.47 average runs per game. Posada and Alex bothered by nagging injuries. Yankees rolling through soft portion of their schedule, the last 3 weeks, Cleveland , Baltimore(2) Houston, Mets. Pitching ranks 3rd in the league, Era 3.86
Mariano Rivera still remains dominant Era 1.16
One commenter said, “We ain’t fraid no Yankees.” Of course not .We’re not afraid of anybody, we just can’t figure out a way to beat anyone! -ouch
Doreen,
Let me know if you want company one day and if I am free, I would love to meet you.
Oh, SAS -
We were only at the Starbucks for a short time. From about 4:10 to 4:30. We stopped in for a snack before we headed home. (They had healthy snack – cheese, grapes & apple slices!). Good thing, too, because we were crawling home on the Garden State Parkway!
SAS –
I will let you know. After we get back from Florida, i know my daughter wants to visit, and I’ll need to “hang out.” I will definitely let you know!!
Glad I didn’t miss anything while this site wouldn’t load.

Funny, I actually forgot that was a Bee Gees song. I have a Bee Gees live CD that I used to listen to all of the time with a great acoustic version of it. (I remember it being acoustic- I could be wrong). But I used to love it. I may have to dust that CD off and play it in my car this week.
People don’t look past the disco and realize how many awesome songs the Bee Gees have
As a Yankee fan and TCU graduate, I propose an emergency exception allowing or, if necessary, compelling Cole to sign with the Yankees in the next ten minutes. Seems fair.
Here is Kenny Rogers singing Lionel Richie’s “Lady”.
He absolutely WAILS. Bad boy extraordinaire.
