One-on-one Teixeira interview tonight on MLB Network

Yankees Orioles BaseballMLB Network has always done a nice job highlighting baseball’s past, but tonight it’s airing a series of interviews about the game’s present. Rays manager Joe Maddon, Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira and Phillies infielders Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins will be featured in interviews beginning tonight at 7 p.m. ET.

Beyond the Game: Maddon, a 30-minute interview by Tom Verducci with Maddon, begins at 7. That’s followed at 7:30 by Beyond the Game: Teixeira, a sit-down interview between Harold Reynolds and Teixeira.

“What was intriguing about talking with Mark was how he comes off as so personable. I don’t think people really know Mark Teixeira and the purpose of this was so you could get to know him away from the game,” Reynolds said in a press release from the Network. “We got to talk with him about his childhood and, in particular, a journal he wrote when he was 12-years old that his parents shared with us. Even then, the way he looked up to Don Mattingly stood out.”

At 8, Howard and Rollins will be the guests for MLB Network’s Studio 42 with Bob Costas. That interview was taped on May 25, with Howard and Rollins becoming the first current players featured on the show.

I hope whatever is ailing your Jug headed 1st baseman, doesn’t rub off on Howard or Rollins, when he returns.

    Until the ASB:

    Sox: @Rox (3), @Giants (3), Rays (2), O’s(3), @Rays (3), @Jays (3)

    Rays: SD (3), AZ (3), @Sox(2), @Twins(4), Sox (3), Indians (4)

Which schedule would you rather play?

howards wet dream if for any bit of teixeira’s skills to rub off on him.

Howard already is his own Fat Albert. OOPS. Did I just swing and miss at anotherbreaking ball?

My error. The run by Banuelos was earned.

The RS just played La, Az,Phil,Cleve,Balt,Oak&,KC… 16 of 23 at home with the 7 road games at Balt and KC.

When have we had a stretch like that?

  10. GreenBeret7 June 21st, 2010 at 1:14 pm

Sanchez has 2 steals against, 1 caught stealing.

I really wish the instructors in the system would teach pitchers how to hold runners a little better.

in Division news, the Rays owner Sternburg just spoke publicly for the first time about their stadium debate. Basically stated that baseball in Downtown St. Pete/the Trop will now work and they will not finish out the lease. Pretty much an ultimatum to agree to build a new ballpark(hinted in Tampa) or they ‘will look’ elsewhere.

Hope the Yanks take care of business in the Desert, let’s keep the division lead

Howard worked with the same conditioning trainer that helped Jeter in the offseason, he’s has slimmed down a lot, he’s no longer Phat like CC, NOBODY HAS THAT GUT. Howard changed his diet and we are proud of him.

CC needs to back away from the table now.

    GB,
I don’t know if it was Maddux or who that started this “get the hitter and don’t worry about the baserunner” trend…but folks need to remember that Maddux usually got the hitter and if you can’t do that at a HOF level like he did then you better hold runners on or you’re just hurting your chances.

he said he would consider everywhere in the region(didn’t mention Orlando specifically), so if Orlando approached him with some free land I’m sure he would immediately accept it. He seemed a little demanding in the press conference so I’m guessing he’ll look at all options. I expect they will not be playing there in 4 years

  28. blake June 21st, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Josh Johnson has given up 1 or fewer runs in 8 straight starts. If the Marlins had made him available then he’s a guy I might have gone that extra mile to get if I’m Cashman…6’7 250 lb stud.

  29. The Philly Phitins June 21st, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Howard has a great swing, you win some you lose some, but his swing is great, unlike jug heads messed up swing, who got lucky yesterday, Phinally.

Imagin how good Maddux’ numbers would have been if he could have held runners just a little. It’s one of the things that really hurts Burnett….and to a certain extent, Sabathia. Hughes does a pretty good job, and Pettitte is just Pettitte, though, he does have trouble stopping runners on 2nd or 3rd base.

I think Orlando would work. Also better chance of getting a tourist tax approved compared w/ Tampa Bay b/c with the oil spill is already negatively affecting tourism in St. Pete/Tampa. But they would need to do it near Downtown Orlando and not near Disney.

The two best Tampa locations in my opinion would be Channelside district near the St. Pete Times Forum or across from the Hard Rock Casino off I4. The owner will give Tampa their shot before Orlando

i don’t know about the rest of you here, but the loss in game 7 still stings.

I think a team there would do better than people think. The south needs an AL team. Folks always point to the bobcats as an example but they aren’t very good and will always hold a back seat to ACC basketball in that area.

if the Rays moved to Vegas, I would guess no more AL East

And Mick about the ST Braves complex, I don’t think it would be smart to put it in the tourist district if it was in Orlando. All the ‘real families w/ disposable income’ live mostly east of Downtown Orlando in Winter Park and Lake Mary. The tourists can drive 20 mintutes east to DT Orlando if the want to catch an MLB game. In Tampa’s case New Tampa and Brandon east of Tampa are huge family communities w/ disposable income so the Fairgrounds or DT Tampa would be the best locations. When you don’t have tradition, location matters

they would also probably need a retractable roof w/ natural grass. July and August you would have a lot of rain delays(ask the Marlins) but for most night games it honestly wouldn’t be that bad, the air is thick but they could have at least half the games w/ the roof open at night…especially in April and May

The GCL team is absolutely stacked. I don’t think either of the first two pitchers will be for GCL long, but nevertheless some real, real prospects to watch.
Brackman (really hitting stride after surgery), Norton, Betances, Kontos, Banuelos, Marshall all coming back in the last couple of weeks. This is a a boat load of talent and if just half of these guys come close to their ceilings it would be astonishing for the big club.
One can only hope for Christian Garcia for next year, but he wins the dubious all-injured award so not much hope.

Yankees and Red Sox are brand names w/ over 100 years of tradition. It’s not a fair comparison. The Trop is ugly and it doesn’t feel like a baseball atmosphere, and add to that it’s in the worst possible location w/ no mass transit in the area. only 600K live in a 30 minute radius of the Trop, how many more live within 30 minutes of Yankee Stadium? that’s why everyone is pushing for them to move to Tampa

    blake,

It’s just tough to build a franchise. If Tampa is good for another 5 years maybe they will draw more fans. But think about it. Any baseball fans that lived in the area already had a team they followed before the Rays came. Then when the Rays got there, they were terrible for a decade. It’s going to take more than 2 winning seasons to develop a big fanbase.

Rough inning in the 5th for Mitchell. 3 hits, 1 walk and 4 runs (1 earned run). Tampa’s 3 error of the game set up that inning. His numbers, 3 innings, 3 hits, 4 runs, 1 earned inning, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts.

Think guys like Brandon League, JJ Putz (who the White Sox will still shop, IMO), perhaps even one of the Tigers bullpen arms if they fall too far behind later in July if you are looking for bullpen help.

    What to look for…..

Guys that are on non-contending teams that are already in roles where you need help.

In other words, forget turning closers in the EIG’s. Unless you want Octavio Dotel. All star calibur closers like Soria? Not happening.

Check contracts. Bad teams looking to shed bad contracts or guys who are arbitration eligible next year. Those are prime guys to be dealt.

  173. SAS June 21st, 2010 at 2:36 pm

    Several things:

I just looked at this thread and have a couple of things.

    1. The Oklahoma City/Tulsa area is sports crazy and has the population to support a team. They are near the Texas panhandle. What about Memphis or Nashville. All these places have weather, but whether a dome is needed or not is up to me.

Erica, Las Vegas is like Phoenix in the summer. Need a dome.

    —————————————

The Phitin guy…is either a nutty fan who found a good blog and can be obnoxious or a Met fan. Notice he said nothing about the Yankees winning 2/3 of the Mets series which helps Phillie. In any case, I would ignore the idiot.

  176. Jerkface June 21st, 2010 at 2:37 pm

Posted in another place but there is a graph from ABC Sports that shows that Tampa, out of some select small/mid market teams, has the least amount of people within 30 minutes driving distance of their stadium. Only 19%

    Others: Seattle 48%, San Diego 63%, Pitts 50% , Arizona 56%, Minn 64%, Milwaukee 68%, Kansas 65%, Denver 79%, Cleveland 67%, Cinci 59%

They are absolutely being killed by their horrendous location.

why give mr. phitins the platform? It is clear to Philly fans that their team benefitted significantly from stealing signs. Once they got pinched on that, they forgot how to hit the ball. I mean, this team is so bad they cant even support Roy Halladay (one of the greatest). There is no excuse why Halladay shouldnt have had 25 wins this year on that team. Really sad.

my 2 cents on the Rays location
I think the owners have tried to attract fans as best they can. They have Sat night concerts, there is a transit bus from Tampa, the Rays are active in the community. The Trop should have a retractable roof, who wants to be inside when it is nice out.

My parents retired to the St Pete area, and were original Devil Rays fans. The Trop is very convenient from my mom’s condo, however as Jerkface notes, she is old (82) and would much rather watch the games from the comfort of her living room.

I think the Orlando area would be a better fit. When we go on vacation, I always look for a ballpark to catch a game, as you can usually at least find a minor league team.

  201. BIG AL June 21st, 2010 at 2:59 pm

Ian Kennedy was only nice when around reporters and players. When he was in SWB, he was obnoxious towards fans, especially young kids. Phil Hughes always went out of his way to be kind to his fans, pose for pictures etc. Most players in SWB were like Phil, but, Kennedy thought he was better than everyone around him. When he was in AA and up with the Yankees, he telegraphed his curve ball, and that’s what got him lit up. Phil Hughes saw it, Dave Eiland saw it, but Ian threw the ball down into the ground on his curve, thus he had a much higher release point, that was easy to P/U. Maybe after the Yankees got rid of him, he started listening, he was never this good in New York. When SWB went to the national series in OK. after winning the Governor’s Cup 2 years ago, Kennedy started that game, and blew any chance SWB had of winning. When he came out of the game after 1 inning, all he did was complain about everything, and took no responsibility for his performance. I’m glad he’s out of the Yankees organization.

I’m rooting for AZ, I guess that makes me a Diamondback, I’ll root for LAD too! I’ll be a Phan of any team that beats/plays the NYY, I want you to Phall off your perch.

Manuel learned a few things from our past series.
    1. Halladay had an off night, he can beat CC, MULTIPLE TIMES if necessary
2.He will pitch on short rest
    3.Yankees can’t handle lefties
4.Yankees aren’t good with an effective Sinkerball pitcher
5.Yankees showed Phillies how to beat them
6.Mark is a sucker to al CHANGEUP, every scouting report says he’s clueless to the pitch.

Manuel was asked by Amaro, to change the starting rotation for this series, but not Boston’s

Florida is predominately a football state. The Rays were marketed wrong right from the start. They built the Suncoast Dome / Thunderdome (now Tropicana Field) before they ever had a baseball team.
The White Sox, S.F. Giants, Twins, and Indians all threated to move to St. Pete if they didn’t get new stadiums and those cities caved in.

For the last baseball expansion, Arizona and St. Pete were awarded franchises by Selig who felt he owed St. Pete after getting dissed so much.

Florida does not deserve a MLB team, either in the AL or NL, they do not support their teams, even when they are winning and a contender. NC and TN have supported pro sports very well, and both deserve a MLB team.
