Derek Jeter and Robby Cano have been announced as starters for the AL All-Star team. Mariano Rivera, Phil Hughes, CC Sabathia and Alex Rodriguez will be joining them.

Andy Pettitte didn’t get picked, but Sabathia is on line to start the Sunday before the July 13 game in Anaheim. He wouldn’t get to pitch in the All-Star Game under the new rules, and another pitcher will be added. So don’t rule out Pettitte yet.  Also, Nick Swisher is on the list of five players still eligible to be voted onto the roster. That vote ends at 4 p.m. Thursday. The balloting can be done at Yankees.com. Swisher  just appeared in a pretaped spot on the video board, standing with a surfboard, urging fans to vote for him.

Marcus Thames was activated after testing his hamstring in four Triple-A rehab games. Chad Huffman was sent down.

Nick Johnson is scheduled to leave today for Tampa to continue the rehab on his surgically repaired wrist. He was going to hit off a tee yesterday, but the Yankees’ doctors told him not to do it. The Yankees said it’s not a setback, they just don’t want to push it. Johnson is supposed to swing and hit off a tee this week.

Jeter is the DH today because Joe Girardi thought it would be a good day to give him a partial rest in the midst of 13 straight games.

Joba Chamberlain knows Amar’e Stoudemire and left him a ticket for today’s game. The free agent power forward is in town because he’s meeting with the Knicks tomorrow. They have reportedly offered him a max contract.

Phil Hughes will start today. He has a 6.29 ERA over his last four starts. “To me, it’s an important start for him to get back on track,” Girardi said.
