Yankees vs. Blue Jays, Posada update

Update, 1:11: Hughes, surely pumped over the news of his first All-Star selection, looked sharp in the top of the first, striking out the first two and then getting a fly to center.

Update, 1:28: While Derek Jeter and Robby Cano were voted to the All-Star team by the fans, Hughes and Mariano Rivera were voted on by their fellow AL players and CC Sabathia and Alex Rodriguez were picked by Joe Girardi. A-Rod’s numbers are down homer-wise with just 12 and he was batting .278 before fanning in the first. He has been productive, though, driving in 61. Wonder if Girardi didn’t want to risk offending him by leaving him off, because Paul Konerko deserves to be on. But the White Sox first baseman, who’s batting .297 with 20 homers and 57 RBI, is only among the final five vying for the last roster spot in another fan vote. Nick Swisher, Kevin Youkilis, Delmon Young and Michael Young are the others on that list. The voting will be over Thursday at 4 p.m.

Update, 1:58: A shallow fly to left with the bases loaded and no one out in the third won’t help the “Send Swish” campaign.

Update, 2:25: At least Mark Teixeira and the All-Star A-Rod came through in that inning for the 2-1 lead. Now in the last of the fourth. Morrow has been throwing in the high 90s.

Update, 2:34: Ramiro Pena hasn’t hit much this season, but he delivered here in the fourth with that RBI single to make it a 3-1 game.

Update, 2:49: Well, that wasn’t an All-Star worthy moment for Hughes, giving up a three-run homer to DeWayne Wise off the foul pole in right here in the fifth. So it’s 4-3, Jays.

Update, 2:57: Great job by Toronto throwing two Yankees out at the plate on consecutive plays to retain the lead.

Update, 3:05: David Robertson is warming in the pen. When Hughes gave up that solo shot to Adam Lind here in the sixth, it marked the seventh homer he had allowed in his last four starts.

Update, 3:24: They scored Brett Gardner’s lost-in-the-sun fly a two-run inside-the-park homer even though it deflected off Wise’s glove. So it’s a 5-5 game here in the sixth. Hughes is off the hook.

Update, 3:28: Damaso Marte is on for the seventh.

Update, 3:33: Bad news. Jorge Posada is hurt yet again. Fred Lewis fouled a ball off the catcher’s right hand and he had to leave the game. Francisco Cervelli is now behind the plate.

Update, 3:51: Not often you see a team get three runners thrown out at the plate. But Nick Swisher was thrown out for the second time, this time on that foul fly to right. Jose Bautista made the throw. Mark Teixeira had already driven in the go-ahead run with a double, though. Joba is in for the eighth to try to protect the 6-5 lead.

Update, 4:21: That’s Mariano Rivera’s second blown save in 20 tries. It’s 6-6 on Wise’s RBI single with two outs in the ninth.

Update, 4:34: Rivera is out after one inning. David Robertson will be on the mound for the 10th.

Update, 4:47: It turns out that foul tip got Posada on the glove hand. He has a sprained ring finger on his left hand. X-rays were negative and he’s day to day.

Update, 5:03: Marcus Thames comes through with the pinch single in the 10th. Yankees win, 7-6. And Thames gets a cream pie in the face as his reward.
