Rivera pulls out of all-star game

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 06, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Mariano Rivera will not participate in the all-star game. He said he’s been pitching hurt and wants the time off.

UPDATE, 9:32 p.m.: Just got upstairs from the dugout, where Rivera talked to the media immediately after batting practice. He’s still dealing with the soreness in his side that left him sidelined earlier this season, and he hurt his right knee during the Dodgers series.

“I’ve been pitching hurt,” he said. “My knee and my side, and I know they are going to use me so I prefer to take this day off and make sure that I’m ready for the second half.”

Rivera said he believes he can still pitch this week, but he knows he can’t go two innings any time soon.

The knee problem seems fairly significant. It happened while he was shagging in the outfield in Los Angeles, and Rivera said he feels it on every pitch. He has some level of inflammation in the knee. The oblique injury happened in early May, and Rivera said it still hasn’t gone away completely.

    Oh f*ck.

  6. Carl July 6th, 2010 at 9:24 pm

As long as it is not a shoulder injury its all good.

  7. SJ44 July 6th, 2010 at 9:24 pm

But I thought these guys play the game like it’s the 7th game of the World Series?

Another example of why this is an exhibition.

    Mo is being smart.

Take the time off and replace him with Soriano.

  8. Bill July 6th, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Ughh… now Jose Valverde has to close the ASG

  9. NYY626 July 6th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

    Great. :(

  10. blake July 6th, 2010 at 9:25 pm

If Mo even has a hang nail I’m glad he’s not playing in the all star game.

  13. SJ44 July 6th, 2010 at 9:26 pm

Mo is 40 years old. He doesn’t need to pitch in the ASG.

He also shouldn’t pitch another 2 inning stint the rest of the year.

  14. Yank1 July 6th, 2010 at 9:27 pm

Between the new rule that Sunday starters must be replaced, the extra roster spots, and all of the guys who are injured who will be replaced…. there are going to be A LOT of players on the team this year in the AL.

  15. CA July 6th, 2010 at 9:29 pm

I knew those 2 inning saves in a span of 4 days were bad news.

Cash better find someone who can actually pitch scoreless innings and use MO only for 3 outs with a lead in the 9th.

  16. Erin July 6th, 2010 at 9:31 pm

Ledger_Yankees Mo’s available before the break but for only one inning stints. Will use the break to rest.

  17. SJ44 July 6th, 2010 at 9:32 pm

If it was serious, he wouldn’t have pitched the last two nights.

He’s just being smart and taking the time off.

No Mo 2 inning outings for Mo.

  20. CRAWDADDY (Boycott ESPN-NY) July 6th, 2010 at 9:33 pm

Some of you need to stop with the overreactions. I think more than a few players in this exhibition would be better served resting than playing in it.

  21. vblade July 6th, 2010 at 9:33 pm

I think this accentuates the need for Joba to improve. Despite how it looks, Mo is no spring chicken.

  22. NYY 2010 July 6th, 2010 at 9:34 pm

Rivera has been battling side injuries

    What are “side injuries?”

  23. NYY 2010 July 6th, 2010 at 9:35 pm

meanwhile, Scurtaro is turning into Ricky Henderson in his prime.

  24. Rancor July 6th, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Meanwhile, the Red Sox are losing 2-1 in the 7th.

You have been crying about everything Red Sox all night.

How ’bout taking a deep breath and relax.

  27. damon (think 28) July 6th, 2010 at 9:39 pm

As long as Joe doesn’t call Papelbon on the roster to replace Mariano, I wouldn’t want a possible win blown!

  28. Nick in SF in Larkspur July 6th, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Mo is ok, he just doesn’t want to put Soria in the uncomfortable position of setting up for him.

  29. NYY 2010 July 6th, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Romero in a big spot here …

  30. NYY 2010 July 6th, 2010 at 9:42 pm

    Rays 6 outs away.

  31. Bryan July 6th, 2010 at 9:42 pm

I better not hear that he hurt his knee slamming into the wall or diving for fly balls

  32. RhapsodyInBlue July 6th, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Mo is a pitbull, if he says he needs to rest you know that he does.

  33. Doris From Rego Park July 6th, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Am I allowed in here or what?

  34. Dassit - HUP HOLLAND July 6th, 2010 at 9:44 pm

A fan fell from the upper deck at the Rangers game trying to catch a foul ball.

  35. SJ44 July 6th, 2010 at 9:44 pm

They don’t slam into walls or dive for balls in BP.

    Relax.

  36. Nick in SF in Larkspur July 6th, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Doris, I’ve been looking for you since July 1st!

You are allowed by the mutual terms agreed to by you and the other party to the bet, or rather, the other party to withdrawing from the terms of the bet.

But I think there is something about a t-shirt for me…?

  37. JoeyA July 6th, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Obviously this isn’t serious or Mo would have been shut down. We need him in the postseason MORE THAN ANYTHING.

Take the time off and get healthy.

Can’t wait for the trolls and bridgers to flood the blog.

Gardy in the one hole is an obvious experiment/challenge by Girardi. Produce against better pitches and you’ve really established yourself this season.

    If not, hello DJ.

    Anyway, Go Yanks!

  38. Pinstripe4Life July 6th, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Father time waits for no man. Even the GREAT Mariano.

  39. ron July 6th, 2010 at 9:48 pm

Don’t like the sound of the knee injury.

    “Feels it on every pitch”.

“Sounds quite significant”. Are words i don’t like.

  40. JoeyA July 6th, 2010 at 9:49 pm

BTW did someone ask why Mo was shagging FBs? Do you know Mo?

  41. RS July 6th, 2010 at 9:49 pm

I hope Andrew Bailey replaces Mo’s spot on the roster. That way the A’s have a player represented and Bailey has much better stats than Papelbon anyway.

  42. SJ44 July 6th, 2010 at 9:50 pm

Yeah, Father Time really has affected Mariano this year.

Do some of you even watch the games?

  43. Jeff NJ July 6th, 2010 at 9:51 pm

Smart move by Mo. I’ll say this though, if Mo thought this was his last all star game, he would at least go the game and lurk in the bullpen. Seems like he is likely to come back next year and that is very very good for the Yankees.

  44. SJ44 July 6th, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Rafael Soriano should be on the team. He’s the logical choice to replace Mo.

  45. blake July 6th, 2010 at 9:53 pm

If a player is chosen but replaced due to injury or other reason, does that still count as the “one player” for that team or do they have to have a player from each team actually available to play in the game? For example, if Wiggington were to get injured would they have to add another Oriole?

  46. ron July 6th, 2010 at 9:54 pm

Regardless of mo’s stats time does catch up too everyone & in some way shape or form mo included.

When you get up in age it takes longer too heal & injuries linger longer.

  47. SJ44 July 6th, 2010 at 9:57 pm

If it was serious, he wouldn’t be pitching at all, let alone having almost a career best year to date.

There isn’t a player in the game that isn’t banged up a bit by this time of the year.

  48. Doris From Rego Park July 6th, 2010 at 9:58 pm

Hey Nick- I was in London for work for a week and now I am in our place in Southampton. We were planning on heading back to NYC Sunday but decided to stay out here to beat the heat. Im going to work remotely all week.

  49. EdFl July 6th, 2010 at 9:59 pm

SJ44, or anyone else for that matter, what happened to Youkilis? MLB.com says he left the game with an ankle injury. Is it serious? Sorry but I hope Swisher get into ASG.

  50. Tyler July 6th, 2010 at 9:59 pm

    RS-

Don’t the A’s already have a player represented as all other teams?

  51. RS July 6th, 2010 at 10:00 pm

Since Youkilis just hurt his ankle, I wonder if that’ll hurt his ASG chances. Even if he wins the final vote, he might be asked to pull out since the Sox are so fragile right now.

  52. RS July 6th, 2010 at 10:02 pm

I don’t think the A’s or any other team needs to have an active representative on the roster, but I know they were hoping Cahill would be replaced by a teammate. Regardless, Bailey is an excellent closer and certainly deserves to be an all-star.

  53. Tyler July 6th, 2010 at 10:07 pm

    RS-

I guess it didn’t click that Cahill was pitching Sunday so he couldn’t start. There have been many instances though when a team’s only player doesn’t get into the game. I don’t think they can lose with either Bailey or Soriano. Soriano has more saves but also plays for the much better team. Should be interesting.

  54. keepin it real July 6th, 2010 at 10:16 pm

I’m speechless Jeter took 10 pitches the most ever by far, a good at bat!

  55. nick July 6th, 2010 at 10:55 pm

Well, this could open a spot for Chan Ho Park.

  56. Melkman is in Hotlanta July 6th, 2010 at 10:58 pm

Unless its the playoffs, Girardi better forget the 2 inning saves for MO. Imagine if Torre were still manager and making Mo do all of those 2 inning saves?
