TIME/TV: 10:10 p.m. ET / YES Network

UMPIRES: HP Tom Hallion, 1B Ron Kulpa, 2B Lance Barksdale, 3B Ed Rapuano

WEATHER: The roof is open and the sun is shining.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Utility man Kevin Russo turned 26 today.

ROAD WARRIORS: The Yankees have won four straight on the road. That matches their season high. They have also won 10 of their past 13 games on the road.

GONE STREAKING: Mark Teixeira has reached base — hit, walk or HBP — in 28 straight games. That matches Derek Jeter for the longest such streak by a Yankee this season. Teixeira’s longest streak is 35 straight in 2008.

UPDATE, 10:10 p.m.: The Yankees actually released an official statement from CC Sabathia regarding the LeBron James signing: “I’m happy for him. He made a decision and it had a lot to do with trying to win a championship. You can’t fault him for that. I do feel bad for the city of Cleveland, though. He meant a lot to that city and the people there.”

UPDATE, 10:25 p.m.: Not too many outfielders throw out Ichiro on the bases. That’s a big throw from Brett Gardner to get Ichiro at third.

UPDATE, 10:43 p.m.: After Gardner picked him up with that outfield assist, Andy Pettitte has gotten five straight outs to get through the second inning scoreless.

UPDATE, 10:50 p.m.: The fans in Seattle seem to regard Alex Rodriguez the same way the fans in Cleveland are sure to regard LeBron James.

UPDATE, 11:09 p.m.: The Yankees put seven runners on base in the first four innings. None of them scored. Still scoreless as Pettitte goes to the mound in the fourth.

UPDATE, 11:25 p.m.: Nick Swisher’s playing like he’s still trying to earn that all-star spot. He has three hits and now a sliding catch in right field. He’s probably gonna get his name in the newspaper tomorrow.

UPDATE, 11:36 p.m.: While the Yankees have stranded yet another base runner, the owner of the Cavaliers has posted an unreal letter in which he rips LeBron and promises a championship in Cleveland.

UPDATE, 11:50 p.m.: Andy Pettitte was steaming mad when he walked off the mound, having struck out back-to-back batters to strand the bases loaded. I’m sure he was a little pumped for getting out of the jam, but he was still kicking himself for his throwing error that brought in a run. Mariners lead 1-0.

UPDATE, 11:56 p.m.: After Marcus Thames pinch hit for Ramiro Pena, the Yankees are now going with Kevin Russo at third base. Still a 1-0 game in the bottom of the seventh.

UPDATE, 12:10 a.m.: For Rodriguez’s at-bat in the eighth, dollar bills — real dollars — fell from the upper deck of the stadium like ticker tape.

UPDATE, 12:24 a.m.: GIDP with runners at the corners finally drives in a run, but the Yankees had a chance to take a lead there in the eighth. Tied at 1. Yankees should absolutely be winning this thing.

UPDATE, 12:32 a.m.: Maybe it hasn’t been his best outing of the year, but Andy Pettitte has made some HUGE pitches tonight. There have been some walks and he threw that bunted ball away, but when he’s needed an out, he’s gotten it. Pretty impressive really.

UPDATE: 12:45 a.m.: Swisher’s huge day continues, and Rodriguez finally drives in the go-ahead runs with a two-out single. He was credited with both RBIs. Took second on the throw and third on an E-9. Yankees lead, 3-1.

He plays the same position as Stoudemire…………..and he’s been traded.

Didn’t they trade him for someone who plays the same position. Randolph?

    SJ,

Finally man I was hoping for to hear this decision, perhaps I’ll see ya at a heat game sometime.

  13. vblade July 8th, 2010 at 10:09 pm

This should permanently end the Jordan comparisons with the paper King.

MJ would have never copped out to try and win an easy championship. LeBron knows he’s no good as an alpha dog on a title team.

  14. Alex July 8th, 2010 at 10:09 pm

A sweep of the Mariners surely would be nice.

“Didn’t they trade him for someone who plays the same position. Randolph?”

Don’t know enough about him to say, Igotid. Guess it comes down to what it would have cost to keep Lee. Hard to argue $160M to two non-defensive playing power forwards. Knicks must have thought it better to add some depth.

  16. Mike Ri July 8th, 2010 at 10:10 pm

KNICK fans are such posers . .crying like a they were entiled to get Lebron. . The same Knick fans chanting MVP when Lebron was Cavelier.

The Knicks are NOT the Yankees. . there isn’t a major draw to play for the Knicks..

And is Lebron really dumb. . He’s getting a Max contract playing in beautifull Miami. Who cares about the legacy BS.. Obviously he doesn’t

HMMMM Statue of Liberty or the Women of South Beach. Get with it .

  17. Mark- Can't touch this. July 8th, 2010 at 10:11 pm

NBA is a joke league I mean people talk about baseball not having competitive balance. HA look at the great work the salary cap in basketball is doing. What are the odds for a Laker vs. Heat final, 99%?

No he’s not getting a max contract. He colluded with two other FA to try and shortcut their way to a title.

I guess you’re right, he doesn’t care about legacy, and that’s a shame.

  20. H.K. July 8th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

If we can get one of four against the Mariners ( considering the matchups ), that would be great.

They’ve been planning this for years. They even signed the exact same contracts to ensure this would be a possibility.

LeBron had a very convenient cop-out in case he couldn’t hack it as the alpha dog in Cleveland. Same for Bosh.

I have more respect for Wade, at least he didn’t have to assemble three All-Stars to win his ring.

  28. luis July 8th, 2010 at 10:16 pm

Sure they did. Thing is, there was nothing wrong with it. They were FREE agents. They want to discuss playing together and are willing to make the financial sacrifices, small as they may be, to do so, more power to ‘em.

It’s a cop-out. You could put 9 scrubs on that team and it’d still contend for a title.

How’d the league feel if Pujols, Mauer, Ubaldo and Cliff Lee made it so that their contracts expired at the same time, then signed with the same team for below market value?

Selig would never allow it. It kills the parity that the salary cap was meant for in the first place.

  51. pistol pete July 8th, 2010 at 10:30 pm

LeBron will go down with Clemens and Arod who piggybacked a great team and players to get their ring. Hard to blame him but if you’re going to be the best ever it needs to be your team. He’ll never be Jordan, Kobe, or Magic, never.

  52. Billy D July 8th, 2010 at 10:31 pm

He could have chosen CSKA Moscow and it would be better, cause he’d still be leading that team as an alpha dog.

The best player in the league decided he couldn’t win a title as the leader, and a cop-out was in order. Maybe he realized it after he disappeared on the Cavaliers during the Celtics series.

Wade and Riley are going to get the recognition, and he’s just along for the ride.

With the best 3 starters and best closer of all time. He was fantastic, but let’s just say he wouldn’t have done that in Texas.

Yeah, I can’t see how a single Yankee fan can be upset that Lebron went to Miami. It’s about winning. He’s taking less money to win.

The only rub about this was the whole press conference that was televised. Definitely in poor taste to dump your team on that type of stage.

Still, all athletes want to win. You can respect Lebron for wanting to be part of a special team. People that want to villainize him are just bitter or have never liked him in the first place.

Nope, but the chance to be remembered as one of the Top 5 players of all time has been lost.

What does the Top 5 players of all time have in common? Guys like Jordan. Magic. Bird. Kobe.

All played their entire careers with one team, and became the face of the franchise.

Miami is Wade’s team, always will. He’s just tagging along so he won’t have to be the alpha dog, because as we have seen in the past offseasons, he couldn’t hack it.

    So he copped out.

What’s wrong with wanting to be a face of a franchise? To try and lead a team as the alpha dog, the undisputed leader? That’s how the very best players are remembered.

Wouldn’t be surprised if LeBron is remembered as a Scottie Pippen sidekick type. And given his immense talent, it’s a shame.

Screw Cleveland, they are a bunch of whiners with a giant victim complex. Would have liked to see LBJ go somewhere he could be the man and lead a team to the title by BEATING the best instead of just joining up with them. Obviously would have loved to see him with the Knicks but who can fault him for passing on the Knicks – clown college that they are. (Dolan can blow money on Isiah Thomas’ bad roster moves and Eddy Curry’s contract but wouldn’t allow Walsh to fire Isiah’s scouts who ended up passing on Brandon Jennings)

    Interesting article on Phil’s change:

    http://online.wsj.com/article/.....lenews_wsj

“When everything’s on, I can just use my fastball, curveball and cutter and be effective,” he said. “But when, say, my curveball is off or my fastball command is off that day, it helps to have another pitch to lean on so you can get through those games where you don’t have much. And I think that’s where the changeup really comes into play for me.”

The other time it comes into play is in the mid-to-late innings. The more a pitcher faces a lineup during the course of a game, the more challenging it becomes to keep hitters guessing. And Mr. Hughes has been less effective the second and third time through opposing lineups.

He has a 2.40 ERA in the first three innings of games and a 5.14 ERA after the third inning.
    *************

He keeps saying this about the change; I hope one day Phil actually uses it…………Those #s after the 3rd inning are dreadful; he has to improve on that as well. I can’t imagine that’s all due to the lack of a change………..poor pitching pattern?

“I demand that the billboard of Lebron be ripped down TOMORROW. If not, it should be vandalized. Lebron has no heart, no soul, and should never feel welcome in Northeast Ohio again. I hope he breaks his knees next season.”

“This self centered egomaniac never gave Dan Gilbert that courtesy of a phone call to inform him of his decision to leave. Grow up LeBron. You will never be able to hang out in Cleveland-Akron again without a slew of body guards.”

    OUCH.

  135. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) July 8th, 2010 at 11:19 pm

    http://online.wsj.com/article/.....lenews_wsj

Phil Hughes has been, sequentially, the best New York pitching prospect since Dwight Gooden, a bust, key to a world championship, nascent ace and a burnout, these last four all within the past calendar year—and he has yet to pitch 300 major-league innings.

All of which makes Mr. Hughes, 24, the more interesting of the two scheduled starters in Friday’s Yankees-Mariners tilt. Cliff Lee will probably pitch brilliantly. That’s what he does. Mr. Hughes is less predictable.

As fans try to guess which pitcher shows up—the one who began the year 8-1 or the one with a 7.03 ERA in his last four starts—it’s worth taking a broader perspective. Mr. Hughes hasn’t visited ruination on the majors the way Dr. K did at first, but there’s little sign he’s doing anything but emerging as a world-class starter.

To take one example, compare where he is to a similar point in Johan Santana’s career. In 2003, the Minnesota Twins were breaking in Mr. Santana, 24, as a starter after having enjoyed his dominant services in relief the previous year—a story Mr. Hughes may find familiar. It wasn’t until July of that year that he permanently cracked the rotation, after which he made 15 starts over the rest of year.

    View Full Image

    TKtk

    Johan Santana
.In those starts, he pitched 92.1 innings, during which he struck out 92, walked 24, and allowed 13 home runs. In his first 15 starts this year, Mr. Hughes has pitched 94 innings, striking out 86, walking 29, and allowing 11 home runs.

Mr. Hughes doesn’t have an otherworldly pitch like the change-up Mr. Santana flashed when younger. He likely won’t go on to win two Cy Young awards. Still, even considering recent woes, there’s nothing to suggest he can’t. And one doesn’t need to become quite as great as Johan Santana to become a great pitcher.

LeBron is an absolute piece of garbage.

I can go over the reasons why this is a horrible career decision for him for about five paragraphs, but I’m so tired of this stuff that I don’t even have the energy to do that.

I will say, though, that holding a one hour special to essentially crap on your hometown is one of the most, if not the most classless act a professional athlete has ever carried out. He should be embarrassed.

I never wanted LeBron to come to the Nets because I personally enjoy rooting for a team that has a loyal, albeit small fanbase, and would be so turned off by the circus around it all that I wouldn’t even enjoy going to games anymore. But what he did to Cleveland is just about criminal.

Art Modell said he thinks about how he alienated Cleveland every single day of his life. And he regrets never being able to return home. I’m sure LeBron is too egotistical and unsympathetic to ever feel that way, but Cleveland fans should do their very best to make sure he never lives or returns to Cleveland again.

  162. G. Love July 8th, 2010 at 11:36 pm

Lebron will have an oceanfront mansion in Miami that will make him quickly forget about Cleveland. He’ll go back there for games and he’ll have an entourage of security and that will be that.

When it came down to it, Wade controlled this whole thing. He had already won his title and didn’t want to leave South Beach and the other two guys capitulated and went along with him.

How can you say no to the weather, the women, the lack of taxes? It’s a party town. It’s Vegas without legal gambling.

Lebron’s legacy is ruined now though. If one of those big 3 get hurt or that team doesn’t win a championship he will be ridiculed for years to come.

Going on TV like that tonight to do what he did and not go back to Cleveland is one of the most classless things I’ve seen in professional sports. He should have just announced it on Twitter with a couple of strippers tatooed with the word Miami.

That was a disgrace and makes me hate ESPN even more. ESPN is a lot of what is wrong with sports today.

As for the Knicks, it’s a complete failure of massive proportions. If the key to getting Lebron was taking the other two guys, they should have known that and made it happen.

Thank God Dolan doesn’t own the Yankees. He’s a disgrace as an owner. Once they have Fios in Greenwich, I will cancel cablevision since I hate even contributing a small amount of money to that family.

In no way did Dan Gilbert inspire violence. A GREAT letter from Dan Gilbert. Even if Lebron signed with the Nets or Knicks, the Cavaliers were deserted, and now there are far fewer options on the free agent market due to his betrayal. The decision was made long ago, and the Cavaliers should have been notified as soon as possible.

    ————–

The Cop-Out King even mentioned not bothering to call the guy who employed him for the past seven seasons to say that he was slinking out of town.

I say good for Dan Gilbert.

  170. G-C July 8th, 2010 at 11:40 pm

    1) If he did this to New Jersey, I’d be out in Secaucus burning old warehouses down there.

    2) Cleveland sports teams are supposedly cursed

    3) How could that possibly make you want to root for LeBron?

BTW for those who haven’t read Dan Gilbert’s in-your-face statement:

    “Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his “decision” unlike anything ever “witnessed” in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

“I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE”

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our “motivation” to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that’s simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown “chosen one” sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And “who” we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called “curse” on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former “King” will be taking the “curse” with him down south. And until he does “right” by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

    Just watch.

    Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day….

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue…. “

    Betsy,

If the key to getting Lebron was bringing Wade and Bosh along too, the Knicks should have known that and not been in a rush to sign Amare.

In Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and David Lee, the Knicks had 3 players they could have offered in sign and trades to Miami, Cleveland and Toronto to give them the cap space to bring the 3 players in.

The fact that the ridiculously inept Knicks front office with years to plan this couldn’t accomplish this makes it clear that this team is run by idiots.

  262. Cookiepuss July 9th, 2010 at 12:10 am

Is anyone out there alarmed by Derek Jeter 2010 esp. his OBP? I wouldn’t mind his BA if he had .370 or better OBP, but he’s just not getting on base enough, so much he has been demoted (yes, demoted) to the #2 slot and you know what? I’d rather see Swisher in the #2 slot than Jeter who should be batting seventh for his BA and OBP.

Honestly, he looks so mediocre out there, I really think the Yanks should offer him two years at $20 million a year then say goodbye to him. He got his years and money 2001-11. Would he really collect his 3000th hit elsewhere?

He will be an old, awful SS or OF in 2013.

He already doesn’t have enough power to be a full-time DH and where’s he batting to collect the minimum 90 RBI a full-time DH should collect?

Cast aside sentimentality and admit that he is on the decline or at least getting older not better.

The Yanks cannot give him 3 or more years on his 1996-2010 and don’t have to as again they gave him a decade-long contract and record one for a lifelong Yankee.

I hope he can turn it around and finish with at least .300 BA and .370 OBP this year, but somehow I don’t see that. I see more like .283 BA and .355 OBP with maybe 13 HR and 70 RBI. Those numbers are not good enough to give him 3 or more years, they just aren’t.

  263. Bronx Jeers July 9th, 2010 at 12:11 am

Cano probably could have parked that ball over the right field wall but he’s afraid to ruffle managements feathers.

  264. ... July 9th, 2010 at 12:11 am

Chris Paul’s risky; unsure if he’ll be back to form after his surgery this year. What I’ve heard is that he either had a meniscus or part of a meniscus removed.

  265. G. Love July 9th, 2010 at 12:12 am

What’s even more sickening for Knick fans to digest is the tidbit that’s come out, “If he had come to New York, James would have had the ball in his hands at least 80% of the time. That’s why they didn’t draft Brandon Jennings in 2009. So now they’re paying for that strategy.”

They passed on Jennings because they thought Lebron was in the bag. If that’s not the sign of a poorly run front office, I don’t know what is.

  266. Tar July 9th, 2010 at 12:12 am

“Andy’s a hard luck loser tonight. He was great.”

    Are you watching the game?

  267. Chris W July 9th, 2010 at 12:12 am

It’s going to be a tough call with Jeter. His defense remains pretty good, thanks to a late-career improvement. But his bat is definitely slipping. Still, it’s hard to find a shortstop that even gives you as much as Jete’s late career production. Think about it; there aren’t many really good ones out there.

Melo is expected to re-up with Denver.

There isn’t much out there that has suggested he’s going to turn down that offer, other than the speculation of desperate Knicks fans who are rightfully upset that their team and future was completely gutted for a near futile home run attempt at LeBron James.

So lets see, the Knicks have no point guard and no center. I love Gallo, but I’m not quite sure if his upside is anything more than Mike Miller was in his prime. Wilson Chandler’s value has been grossly inflated by his high minute and shot totals. On a per minute basis, he’s a slightly below average wing who happens to be a very high volume shooter.

I still don’t think the Knicks are working with much here. They also passed on a crapload of talent with their 2 second round picks to take 2 guys who in my opinion have no business being anywhere near an NBA roster. If it took JJ Redick, one of the greatest players in NCAA history (forgive me for being biased because I’m a Duke student), four years to become an even competent NBA player, does anyone think Andy Rautins has a prayer of cracking an NBA rotation?

The score right now should be 4-1 Yankees.
Hitting with RISP has been a problem ALL season.

This Seattle team just got swept by Kansas City at home.
The feeble Royals scored 16 runs in three games – this line-up has ZERO runs thru 7 innings.

Will they hit with RISP now?

The Yankees have to learn they just can’t turn it on when they feel like it.

  272. Tyler July 9th, 2010 at 12:13 am

The Yankees won’t let Jeter walk. Even if it means giving him 3 years which would obviously be a risky contract. He’s the franchise really. EVen if they give him a bad contract that could hurt them in the future they will do it. They won’t be like the Sox forcing guys out.

anyways I think that when Jeter thinks he has lost it completely he will just retire. I cant see him being one of those guys who holds on and tries just for the stats and the record books. His life is basically too good for that haha and he has too much pride. when he’s done he will step away and spend the rest of his life with minka in that compound of a house down in tampa and enjoy family life.

I heard something about an open letter-

Can someone please post the entire, massive letter for the 10th time tonight?
    =============================================================
    Sure:

    “Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

He got the run in with 2 strikes which was great but I don’t know if I would call that excellent. It potentially killed the inning. He at least tied it though so I’m happy about that.

  305. pistol pete July 9th, 2010 at 12:23 am

Cano’s poor instincts base running cost the Yankees the lead. It should have beed 2nd and 3rd nobody out. Posada’s groundout would have resulted in 1 out runner on third. He would have scored on Granderson’s single, little things win close games, I love Cano but that was real real poor base running. No way the catcher throws behind Arod, he’d have made it easily. Too bad might cast Andy the game.

  346. Cookiepuss July 9th, 2010 at 12:35 am

    Tyler

I honestly don’t think the Yankees letting Jeter walk is the issue. I think the issue is will Jeter want to collect his 3000th hit in another uniform (since he’s not collecting it this year) and be the utlimate mercenary and phony doing so considering he was given a decade-long contract you and alot of other Yankee fans seem to forget he got? I don’t think so. He has zero leverage over the Yankees who he needs more than they need him.

The Yanks owe him nothing and vice versa. Both have to be realistic, and the reality is Jeter is all about excellence thus should not expect a deal of three years or more after he has hands down his worst offensive year if he has it. He is hands down at his worst this year, and if you think I want or am happy to say that, you’re nuts cuz I am very down. It hurts to see this once great player look like 1990-95 Don Mattingly II.

He is not the franchise, Mariano Rivera is. Mo is the only Yankee I’d sign for more than he’s worth because you name me a closer who can be 75% the closer he is for a decade or more.

I will say that if the Yanks signed say Edgar Renteria to replace Jeter, they would definitely need to upgrade at DH if Posada still catches and LF as Granderson isn’t cutting it (he just isn’t) not because Jeter is gone but because they’d need to make up for the loss of offensive production pre-2010 Jeter provided.

I didn’t read the post. LOL but this caught my eye as I was looking down. Holy Cr@p.

  356. Tyler July 9th, 2010 at 12:39 am

    cookie-

First of all, they aren’t signing edgar renteria to replace jeter. if jeter did leave by some remote chance they will give the job to a young kid like nunez or pull off a big trade. but that isn’t going to happen. i couldnt really comprehend some of your post but did you call jeter phoney lol?

and i dont think he will want more than 3 years. he’s not going to be playing into his 40s in my opinion. i think hes looking foward to family life from what ive always read.

“He is not the franchise, Mariano Rivera is. Mo is the only Yankee I?d sign for more than he?s worth because you name me a closer who can be 75% the closer he is for a decade or more.”

    Thats a very outlandish statement.

Mariano Rivera is the greatest closer of all time, but Derek Jeter might be the greatest shortstop to play this game since Honus Wagner.

There is no comparison in terms of value between an all time great shortstop and an all time great closer.

Every time someone tries to say that Rivera is the “franchise,” or something to that degree, I cringe a little bit. Its not that I don’t love Mo more than anyone else does. I still get the chills every time I see him in the game. But the value of someone who pitches 60-70 innings a year pales in comparison to a shortstop who is impacting every inning of every game.

LeBron can root for the Yankees, but as Yankee fans (and likely Knicks fans) or NY fans, or heck just sports fans in general, I wouldn’t accept him as a Yankee fan.

I’ve heard lots of comparisons to the yankees, but I think it’s apples and oranges.

On a completely unrelated matter, AROD!!

  386. G-C July 9th, 2010 at 12:44 am

I’m telling you, I like this worse, yet more clutch, Alex Rodriguez quite a bit more than I did a couple years ago.

Wow… the Cavs owner unloads on LeBron

    Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

  464. GreenBeret7 July 9th, 2010 at 1:05 am

There’s much to be said about teams like Seattle that will battle the best team in baseball, game after game. They can be dangerous, but, clearly shows a losing mentality that they can only get that drive against one team. They make their season when they beat the Yanks. Arizona is the same way. That should really kill their fans when the team rolls over for other teams that they should beat.

  465. Timmy July 9th, 2010 at 1:05 am

  467. rconn23 July 9th, 2010 at 1:06 am

I don’t see how anyone could possibly defend what Gilbert did tonight. It’s absolutely pathetic.

I never understand the rationale that the player always owes the franchise. Lebron spent seven years with them. Reupped with Cleaveland on a short-term contract with them, even.

He gave Cavs management a chance to surround him with a capable supporting cast. Their best move, picking up Antwan Jamsion. Not good enough.

The TV special was a joke, but LeBron left $30 million on the table to take what he felt was the best shot at winning a title.

You’re not a “mercenary” when you spend seven years with a team and then take much less money to play second fiddle to Dwayne Wade because you want to win a championship.

    That logic is beyond flawed.

  468. GreenBeret7 July 9th, 2010 at 1:06 am

Career win # 240 for Pettitte.

  469. Tyler July 9th, 2010 at 1:07 am

    Compass-

Personally, I think the Yanks split the Lee, Felix games and take 3/4.

Has there been any thought to moving League into the closer role and taking Aardsma out of it? I never liked Aardsma. All he does is come at you with fastballs. And his fastball is good but its not a plus pitch in my opinion.

  470. Tyler July 9th, 2010 at 1:09 am

Seattle had just been swept by KC at home their last series. When they play the Yanks they really look like a tough team. Good starting pitching, Ichiro sets the table and they seem to scratch out a couple runs. But somehow they are 17 games under. Just can’t score enough runs and come out a winner…

  471. m July 9th, 2010 at 1:10 am

  472. SF Giant July 9th, 2010 at 1:10 am

  473. GreenBeret7 July 9th, 2010 at 1:10 am

Pettitte could have been #1 or #2 in ERA except for questionable scoring tonight and in LA when 5 of those runs that scored should have been unearned instead of only 1 unearned.

What the heck do you want the owner to say? His franchise is finished. Unless he gets lucky in the lottery and drafts the next LBJ or Durant, he is screwed. NO FA wants to play in Cleveland. They have no assets for a trade.

His franchise value now basically is devalued by 50%, they will prob. average about half of what they did with James. Their TV Ratings, which were the best in the league, will now be the worst in the league.

If he’s going down, he might as well drag LBJ with him. Classless? Maybe. But what does he have to lose? His franchise turned upside down overnight and will stay that way for a long time.

  478. Bracket July 9th, 2010 at 1:16 am

Good for Gilbert. Drag the guy through the mud. Give us details of the Delonte West incident too ;)

  479. tala08 July 9th, 2010 at 1:16 am

Well why go after James if that is how you really feel? And they weren’t going after him for appearances sake; they wanted him.

Whether you like what he said about James or not, it doesn’t come off as something that is best for the organization. Gilbert and all those who are patting him on the back don’t know how this will play with future free agents. If it doesn’t play well (and you already have a hard time selling the city of Cleveland, for Pete’s sake) was it worth it?

  480. GreenBeret7 July 9th, 2010 at 1:18 am

Had the Yanks scored more this year earlier in 4 of the no decisions, Pettitte is sitting on 15 wins right now. Only 3 games in 17 starts that he’s allowed more than three runs.

  481. tala08 July 9th, 2010 at 1:18 am

It is not LeBron’s responsibility to make sure Gilbert’s franchise worth doesn’t drop. Smart people don’t put everyone else’s interests before their own. They don’t owe the teams or the fans anything.

  482. rconn23 July 9th, 2010 at 1:19 am

Gilbert has singlehandedly managed to turn public sentiment mounting against Lebron back his way.

Gilbert looks like an absolute joke right now. Lebron owes him nothing. James turned Cleveland into a basketball mecca for seven years.

The front office wasn’t competent enough to find the right complimentary pieces or find a legitimate NBA coach during that time.

They should be glad it lasted as long as it did.

  483. vblade July 9th, 2010 at 1:19 am

  492. rconn23 July 9th, 2010 at 1:25 am

What valid points did Gilbert make? ThatLebron betrayed the the city of Cleveland? Yeah, salient argument from a guy acting like a 12-year old. Gilbert is making himself and the organization look foolish.

What player in their right mind would want to play for the Cavs now after they’ve seen the way Gilbert has acted? Good luck getting that champiobship.

James left $30 million on the table, because he wanted to win. Miami is a great city, but it’s a terriblle sports town. He wasn’t wowed by the Heat mystique lol. He went there only to play with other superstars and for a better chance to win a title.

  493. ron July 9th, 2010 at 1:26 am

Gilbert said James quit on the Cavs during their second-round series against the Boston Celtics, who rallied from a 2-1 deficit to eliminate Cleveland.

“He quit,” Gilbert said. “Not just in Game 5, but in Games 2, 4 and 6. Watch the tape. The Boston series was unlike anything in the history of sports for a superstar.”

The Cavaliers were beaten by 32 points in Game 5. During the game, James appeared distracted and uninterested, often glaring at Cleveland’s coaches as the Cavs tried to foul to get back into the game in the second half. James also made some puzzling postgame comments, saying he had “spoiled” people with his play over seven seasons.

Gilbert also said he believes James quit on the Cavs in Game 6 of their series in 2009 against Orlando.

“Go back and look at the tape,” he said. “How many shots did he take?”

Gilbert, who has owned the Cavs for five years, said he was most disappointed by James’ behavior in the months leading up to the superstar’s announcement that he is going to Miami to play with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Gilbert said James never returned a single phone message or text since the end of the season and that the Cavs were not informed of James’ decision until he went on the air.

Gilbert said Rich Paul, one of James’ business partners, called the Cavs moments before the announcement.

“LeBron James needs to go to another team with two superstars already so he can win a championship,” Gilbert said. “We will win a championship before [the Heat] do.”

  494. m July 9th, 2010 at 1:26 am

Gilbert sure doesn’t look good, but you can’t blame him for feeling bitter. He gave into every whim and demand LeBron had. And it wasn’t enough. On top of that LeBron had every intention of teaming up with Wade. A good guy would have let the team trade him for something, anything.

  495. CompassRosy July 9th, 2010 at 1:29 am

  496. vblade July 9th, 2010 at 1:29 am

  497. tala08 July 9th, 2010 at 1:30 am

m, the Cavs had no intention of trading LeBron. They said that a long time ago. So that is not on LeBron.

He can be bitter all he wants but being a better businessman should come first. In this case it didn’t.

Folks are being played by Gilbert and the Cavs with this silliness and too blind or emotional to see it.

  498. vblade July 9th, 2010 at 1:31 am

Tala, okay I’ll give you that. But when lebron’s been planning this for 3 years, since he convinced Wade to sign a 3 yr extension. Nobody should begrudge lebron for leaving, but it’s now clear what his plan was all along. He shouldn’t pretend otherwise. They figured it out to the last penny.

  500. Jeff in Canada July 9th, 2010 at 1:37 am

The right move?! Are you guys crazy? The LeBron-less Cavs are the Timberwolves. When the Heat hoist next year, what will Gilbert say then?

“He had to play with all-stars to win.”. Translation: we couldn’t get this done in Cleveland.

I get the guy and city are hurting, but take the high road. The guy killed, r@ped, and pillaged for you for 7 years. Be thankful for what you had, because there are a dozen or more teams that would kill for one season with LBJ.

    Pat M,

I don’t think the Heat will have a hard time finding guys to play for less money to be a part of the Dream Team.

I would never hand those guys the title, but they are going to be one heck of a team when it’s all said and done.

If they can get a sharp shooter or two like Kyle Korver or even an Eddie House (both unrestricted FA) along with a couple bigger bodies (Ben Wallace, Joe Brown?) to stand in the middle and rebound, they’ll be fine.

Of course they’ll have to wait until 2011 to make any big improvements, but they’ll be quite a team.

  509. Tyler July 9th, 2010 at 1:51 am

    m–

I think the Lakers still take them. The Lakers just have too much size up front. Gasol and Bynum are absolute monsters. Unless the Heat acquire a 7 footer who can bang they won’t come out on top I dont think. Kobe can neutralize D Wade and Artest can harrass James. And Gasol can match up with Bosh.

An interesting radio interview with Cliff Lee, today. He said that he asked for an extension with Seattle in Spring Training, but, was turned down flat, with the team saying they weren’t interested in that. Lee said that he was still willing to resign after he showed that he was healthy. Wonder if he’d still be open to signing a long term extension and forgo free agency.

A Cleveland fan’s typical reaction to the Gilbert rant:

    “Dear Mr. Gilbert :
For 49 year I have been alive and been a Cleveland fan, and you are the first owner that has had our back. You are dead right about this monster! He is self absorbed and we witnessed Lebron James cold bloodedly stab us in the back with smiles, while his two friends Wade and Bosh hide behind a bush in the dark. This was a crime against all Ohioians, here and around the globe. But finally we have an owner that loves our city as much as we do. Don’t worry Mr. Gilbert I believe many NBA smaller markets are gonna start sticking it to the larger markets.

God Bless you for this statement because we needed a true hero to stand up for us in our hour of need. We witnessed three superstars gut an entire city of fans who believed in his words… tonight I believe we saw him unveil why he laid down in game 5 and took your millions and gave no effort in return. He blamed his teammates and the organization, then walk away like a coward….”

I’d say Danny’s got them all in the palm of his hand.

“They’re grasping at straws now, and the longest straw is the city’s current hatred of “LeTraitor”.”

    ——————-

If Miami were a rival of Cleveland, maybe he’s a traitor. This isn’t Jeter leaving for the Red Sox.

There is absolutely nothing LeBron did that justifies that title.

Cleveland didn’t “own” LeBron and they certainly did NOTHING to try to keep him there in terms of building a championship team.

If Cleveland fans are really that immature (I know all of them are not), then they deserve their perpetual futility.

    ——————————–

From what I’m reading on any Cleveland-related website, the vitriol is like nothing I’ve ever seen. People are literally wishing for him to have a career ending injury and for him to never win a championship, or to go broke within a few years of retiring.

    It’s nasty stuff.

  536. tala08 July 9th, 2010 at 2:18 am

I agree this is definitely to hide their own shortcomings and people are buying it like fools.

Wade is surely loved in Miami but folks shouldn’t get too carried away and act like LeBron will be Scottie Pippen. He’ll still be able to get his glory and shine. Its not like Wade in Miami is MJ in Chicago or Jeter in NY.

  537. m July 9th, 2010 at 2:19 am

The talking heads thought Chicago would’ve been the better basketball move.

How many players do they have now? 4?5? Add their 3 draft picks. They still need 4 players to suit up? They’re going to have a 6-man rotation? Lucky thing they’re so young!

    BTW, who’s their center? Shaq?

  538. vblade July 9th, 2010 at 2:19 am

“I took my 2 LeBron jerseys and shredded them up and urinated on both of them. My son threw eggs and some old salsa and some smelly fish sauce on them to give them the right touch. We had planned to burn them but we stopped just short of the feat.”

That’s one of the milder reactions…

  539. CompassRosy July 9th, 2010 at 2:21 am

He asked for an extension after the trade, during ST and when he came off of the DL. If he’s still interested, it would certainly change the thoughts of him being a 2 month rental.

He didn’t “ask” for an extension. Today on the show he mentioned that if the M’s were to offer something, he’d like to see it prior to the season, to avoid distraction. He didn’t come off the DL until after the season started (April 30th).

And, to be fair, we haven’t heard both sides (and maybe never will).

In any case, it has been a joy to watch Cliff at his craft … he WILL be missed ;(

  540. tala08 July 9th, 2010 at 2:21 am

Well, they paid for them already, they can do whatever they want. LeBron already got his cut. LOL

I know a lot of people in Southern Florida and spend some time down there myself every year, and I’m not so sure about this.

Wade is very, very close to being MJ in Chicago or Jeter in New York down there. Its an awkward sports town of sorts and he has given it an international face and consistent credibility. Considering they’ve never had an athlete close to his caliber, he’s probably every bit as popular in Miami as Jeter is here.

This is not to mention that Wade is infinitely more likable off the court than James is. He’s every bit the player that LeBron is and he didn’t spend the last two years running this ridiculous campaign culminating in a one hour special that was so narcissistic it was hilarious.

I came across a new “QWitness” t-shirt, lmao.

Wade is much more of a clutch performer than the Cop Out King will ever be.

The same way Seattle treats A-Rod and that wasn’t his home town.

I had to leave the house at 9:30 eastern time, but I did catch LeBron’s stone face when Gray asked if it was Miami. And I nearly fell over when Gray asked him if he’s still a nail biter. Speechless!

  546. tala08 July 9th, 2010 at 2:33 am

I’ve lived in Miami. Its not the same as Jeter in NY or MJ in Chicago. Not dissing Wade, just not the same as I see it.

Having sat through a lot of playoff games in the Meadowlands in which my Nets were on the opposite side of, I couldn’t agree more.

I think we all know who’s getting the ball in the fourth quarter with less than two minutes left in a close game.

  548. tala08 July 9th, 2010 at 2:35 am

Far as I’m concerned for the folks that have all that hate for him, their lives are obviously lacking. This is sports. People need a reality check. Its his business and he should go where he wants and be able to put his interests first. He doesn’t that team, the city or the state a thing.

  549. m July 9th, 2010 at 2:36 am

    LeBron will become LeMagic.

  550. tala08 July 9th, 2010 at 2:36 am

He doesn’t * owe * that team, the city of the state a thing.

Our Nets. More rebuilding for us ahead.

I can’t wait for the Store-Bought team to start infighting on who should have the last shot.

The same way Seattle treats A-Rod and that wasn’t his home town.

ftr ~ I never boo Alex (but then, I don’t boo, period).

It’s pretty silly after all this time, but there are those who still hold a grudge regarding the fact that Alex repeatedly said all he wanted to do was play for a winner (granted, he would eventually ) but not before he signed the biggest FA contract in MLB history … to play for the Texas Rangers.

  553. m July 9th, 2010 at 2:50 am

    Chad,

Btw espn recap said it’s fake money they drop for Alex. Kind of funny. But mean. But not as mean as the blondie masks.

  554. CompassRosy July 9th, 2010 at 2:56 am

Oh, there’s always the some genuine bills, as this tweet from Larry Stone attests….

Check that — one floated into the press box, and it’s a real dollar bill with an advertisement sticker on it.

remove *the* (getting late, even on the west coast)
