Yankees launch Mission 33

Record Breaking LEGO Build of the Big Apple Opening Ceremony with New York Yankee Nick SwisherIt’s a matter of time before this whole day becomes about LeBron James. Just when you thought you couldn’t possibly read or watch any more about him, James is apparently going to ring the opening bell at the stock exchange, give the State of the Union address and serve as Grand Marshal of the Macy’s parade. And he’s going to do it all during an hour long ESPN special.

At least, that’s the way I understand it. I haven’t been paying much attention. I might have missed some details.

Until then, it’s Nick Swisher’s day to land a spot in the All-Star Game, and the Yankees are calling for something called Mission 33. Here’s the announcement.

At 3:30 p.m. today, fans are asked to vote at least 33 times in honor of outfielder Nick Swisher – who wears uniform No. 33 – over the final half hour of the Final Vote. Voting is vital throughout the day, but Mission 33 will be critical in order to “Send Swish” to the All-Star Game.

Voting for the final spot wraps up at 4 p.m., so you have 90 minutes. Here’s the link to vote for the final roster spot. The results will be announced tonight.

That’s an Associated Press photo of Swisher at some sort of LEGO event in New York last week. “Stop fooling around and go vote!” Swisher said. Or maybe he didn’t.

The voting page is going very slow. i imagine it’ll get worse as we get closer to 4pm. So if you were going to throw some votes in last minute, I would get started now

  2. Uncle Ellsworth July 8th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

I knew the freemasons were involved

  3. Erin July 8th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

    Send Swish!!!! :D

  4. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

    repost:

“If James does come to Miami, they will have their pick of veteran FA’s willing to play with those three guys to fill their needs.”

    ————

    that’s the key

I think they should try to get Derek Fisher to take a pay-cut to win some more rings.

They’ll have no problem getting guys who want a great shot at a ring to come and play for very little money.

Miami is gonna win 70 games!

  5. Erin July 8th, 2010 at 2:36 pm

JackCurryYES For now, any link between Yanks and Cliff Lee is because Cashman is being thorough. When marquee players are available, he surveys landscape

  6. Chuck July 8th, 2010 at 2:36 pm

I just asked my boss at the office if I could vote 33 times at 3:30pm. He didn’t mind.

  7. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:36 pm

    blake,

I figure they would (Philles would trade with the Yanks) but….

if they are going to move Werth and somewhat concede this year, I think they’d want prospects or a young player back, not a 3 month rental of Javy Vazquez.

I see no reason to trade Javy anyway. He is a big part of this team and will bring in two first rd picks as a type-A free agent.

  8. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:38 pm

MLB must be getting hammered with votes. Validation key is super slow to come up.

    Down with Youk/Votto!

    Vote Swish/Zimmerman!

  9. pat July 8th, 2010 at 2:38 pm

My 8 year old is going to have carpal tunnel syndrome but she’s done her part for Swish to be an All-Star.

  10. Bret the Hitman July 8th, 2010 at 2:39 pm

So now the Heat have enough money for Lebron, Wade, Bosh, a 6 million dollar bench player and Derek Fisher and enough left over for a starting center.

  12. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:39 pm

I could get 20 votes in last night in 2 minutes or less.

Today it’s much slower, seems like 20 votes in 5 minutes.

  13. Nick in SF in Larkspur July 8th, 2010 at 2:39 pm

Youk is also 33 times uglier than Swisher.

  14. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:40 pm

“So now the Heat have enough money for Lebron, Wade, Bosh, a 6 million dollar bench player and Derek Fisher and enough left over for a starting center.”

    —————

    who knows… it’s all possible.

Players will play for the minimum for a chance to play with the Big Three and a very good chance at some rings.

  15. Bret the Hitman July 8th, 2010 at 2:40 pm

The Heat – the starting 5 would be free agents, their 6th man and most of the bench.

And Lebron wants to be affiliated with that?

  16. The Golden Thong July 8th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

At what point does the vote-recruiting become shameless and embarrassing? Look, I love Swish and hope he gets a chance to go to the ASG. But is he the most deserving guy? Not sure. He’d have my vote regardless, but do you want to go for your accomplishments on the field, or for your ability to recruit votes?

  17. Nick in SF in Larkspur July 8th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

But if Swisher comes up short, it will be because the Yankees pizzed off Taiwan.

  18. BIG AL July 8th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

If you wait until 3:30, you’ll never get your vote in. The system is moving real slow. Vote now till your are gets too tiered to move. Why stop at 33? If every fan voted just 50 times, it may be enough to make a huge difference.

  19. Bret the Hitman July 8th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

Talk about the easy way out.

  20. Bronx Jeers July 8th, 2010 at 2:42 pm

I really like Swish and I’m doing my duty here but this voting is driving me a little batty. I didn’t exactly have a surplus of “sanity braincells” to begin with.

    Hey Chad,

Do us a favor and tell Swish that we all love him but do us a favor and get himself picked outright next time!

  21. Tar July 8th, 2010 at 2:43 pm

“if they are going to move Werth and somewhat concede this year, I think they’d want prospects or a young player back, not a 3 month rental of Javy Vazquez.

    BD

Isn’t Werth also a type A free agent? It’s a swap of rentals. IMO At this point in time I think Javy (starting pitcher) is more valuable than Werth (position player).

  22. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:44 pm

    “jake July 8th, 2010 at 2:40 pm

I have a bad feeling Montero isn’t going to pan out or do as well as he’s expected to do. Dont know why. ”

    ————–

so because you have a feeling with no reason for it, it makes sense to trade him? :)

Yanks are in a fantastic position with so many legit catching prospects.

If just one of them becomes the next Posada, it will be tremendous.

I say keep them all as long as you can to increase the odds that it happens.

If one must be traded, so be it. But don’t look to trade them.

  23. Copelius July 8th, 2010 at 2:44 pm

Texting A2 to 1122 is also a way to vote. Easier for me.

  24. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

    Tar,

    true.

I suppose you can’t go wrong with moving Javy for Werth, however, finding a decent RH bat is likely going to be much easier than finding a reliable starting pitcher at the deadline.

There are probably going to be some acceptable RH bats available as salary dumps. After Cliff Lee and Oswalt, is there a starting pitcher who is trustworthy and won’t cost the farm?

  25. RS July 8th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

I used to count my votes but somewhere around 600-700 I lost count. I’m trying to get to 1,000 votes before this thing is over.

  26. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

    Copelius,

    good idea.

    forgot about that.

  27. Bronx Jeers July 8th, 2010 at 2:47 pm

Just got a validation key that started with “33″! Hurray!

Oh this is big time fun now.

  28. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:47 pm

    RS,

    keep em coming!

Swish should take you out to lunch if he wins :)

  29. Bret the Hitman July 8th, 2010 at 2:47 pm

Catcher, IMHO, is the most important position on the field. So with Jorge Posada nearing the end of his career, I want as many catchers as possible replacements, from Cervelli to Romine, Montero and Sanchez. When one of them establishes himself as the everyday catcher for the Yankees, only then should the Yankees look to move any of the other potential candidates. We have a ton of other prospects available to offer in trades. I see no last resort scenario where it’s necessary to mess with our catching situation.

  30. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:48 pm

If Youk does win, Girardi should make him play CF for all 9 innings :)

his ankle is a little tender, ya know?

  31. Lori July 8th, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Folks – stop commenting and start voting!

Copelius – I thought texting is only available to Sprint subscribers – unfortunately I have AT&T. Otherwise, I’d have voted so many more times today!

golden thong, you raise a pretty good point, this whole thing with Swisher is getting just a tad absurd. i actually think Youkilis deserves it slightly more, but it hasn’t stopped me from voting for Swisher. i just cannot stand Kevin Youkilis… he’s smug, rude, seems like a jackass, ugly, and he’s on the Red Sox. he and Pedroia epitomize why i can’t stand Boston. so, i am forced to vote for Swish even with this ridiculously over the top campaign.

  37. Tar July 8th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

“I suppose you can’t go wrong with moving Javy for Werth, however, finding a decent RH bat is likely going to be much easier than finding a reliable starting pitcher at the deadline”

I agree. Which is why if there was a trade if anybody should send back prospects it should be them. But unless they get Lee, I don’t think they Javy. If ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  38. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 2:52 pm

    next year:

does it make sense to try to vote in the WORST players for the NL?

If home field in the World Series is at stake, let’s try to pit a team of bench scrubs for the NL so they have no chance at winning.

    Right?

  39. Uncle Ellsworth July 8th, 2010 at 2:52 pm

  41. Tar July 8th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

“Folks – stop commenting and start voting!”

Lol, good point. Everyone who’s commenting here obviously has access to a computer so why not vote instead?

An incentive to voting even if Swisher doesn’t win is that you automatically enter into a sweepstakes to win 2 tickets to a Yankees game and a Swisher autographed baseball.

    Yankees just made a trade…

  46. Patrick July 8th, 2010 at 2:56 pm

    vblade,

If you’re still around, step off the ledge man!

The Nets think Travis Outlaw can be an average starting forward in the NBA and he’s being paid like one. They are also going to go after Tyrus Thomas and/or Kyle Korver. Not terrible moves as long as they are signed for fair deals.

I’d love David Lee as well but unless Lebron goes to the Knicks, Lee is going to be signed then traded. And I doubt the Knicks would do a s&t with the Nets. I’m also not sure if Lee has any interest in the Nets.

I just read that Avery Johnson said the team is going to use all of their cap room except for $10 mil. I think that now we have a real coach this team has a real shot at the playoffs as long as the team stays healthy. Part of the reason the Nets were so bad last year was because of injuries.

We have to bide our time, hope that Harris, Lopez and Favors continue to improve and have faith that Thorn’s successor will build a good team in the years to come.

  47. Uncle Ellsworth July 8th, 2010 at 2:56 pm

the red sox were getting thoroughly embarrassed last night by Price. i don’t know how they ended up scoring the couple runs they did, but it was just fastball after fastball and late swing after late swing. it seriously looked like a college team trying to play against the Rays for like the first 5 innings. i don’t know if i’ve ever actually felt sorry for the Sox, but last night i may have just a bit.

I don’t see how the Mets could be close to a deal for Lilly, they just pulled the reigns back on a Lee deal 2 days ago (they won’t include ike davis or mejiea, so they are no shot).

I was just reading that the Rangers have been asked to include Smoak in the deal, because they can’t afford the $4million that Lee is owed for the remainder of the year. I’d say that just about nukes that deal, if they trade Smoak for a rental they are insane.

So Lee staying in Seattle is looking more and more likely by the day.

interesting. I’m not sure how to feel about that. Holland would be a top prospect for most teams but the Rangers are loaded.

I guess Lee would make them legit contenders….

  87. SJ44 July 8th, 2010 at 3:17 pm

Anybody trading for Cliff Lee right now is going to pay a premium price.

The closer you get to the deadline, the more the price drops.

I’m not sure it drops much though if he keeps pitching like he is.

There is enough demand and the fact that he is the type of impact arm that could make or break a team’s season is enough to keep his value at a premium.

    BD,

If you wait until July 31, the Mariners have two options…..take the draft picks and keep him. Or, take what’s available.

Now? Jack Z can pitch 4-5 more starts prior to 7/31 which ups the price.

If it was me, I wouldn’t a premium price for a guy they will sign in the off-season as a FA.

Only way I’d do it is if either a starter got hurt or the price is such where you can’t turn it down. Which of course, is unlikely.

  99. G. Love July 8th, 2010 at 3:24 pm

After hearing that Wade and Bosh has camera crews following them around for free agent meetings, I just realized what the ESPN special is going to most likely be tonight.

Outside of Lebron saying Miami Heat, we’re going to be treated to all that footage that was shot over the week of the three of them taking meetings and edited to make them look intelligent and heroic in their choice.

Lebron in Miami turns him into the biggest villain in the NBA. He’s Arod now.

And he can forget about comparisons to Jordan and Magic. Miami is Wade’s team. He already won a championship there. Lebron is Pippen.

As some in the media have already said, it’s time to knock off the “King” stuff.

  100. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 3:24 pm

    SJ44,

I agree…. except that so many teams covet Lee, I believe a team will overpay now or in 3 weeks. You’re right that his value is higher now, but I doubt that value drops too much as teams scramble to set themselves apart in very tight playoff races across the league.

I certainly think he’ll draw more than Sabathia did for the Indians, regardless of when he is traded, and LaPorta was a heck of a prospect.

  105. Bronx Jeers July 8th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

“I bet if Youk gets left out, MLB will find a way to get him in the game”

In all fairness, he should be in the game. Don’t think MLB does anything about it though. Sure neither Youkilis nor the Red Sox will have any issues with a 4 day break for that ankle thing.

  107. SJ44 July 8th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

    GLove,

Its pretty clear LeBron doesn’t care about being the “King”.

That’s what I gather from all this.

He wants to win. To do so, he’s going to make a decision to go where he thinks he has his best shot.

Actually, its a pretty selfless thing all of these guys are doing when you think about it.

They could just go elsewhere, get their max money, and be the “Man” with their respective franchises.

If it was just about him being above a team or the game, he wouldn’t be going to Miami.

Its really like Arod coming to the Yankees, knowing its Derek Jeter’s team, and doing what he can to fit in.

As long as there are 2+ teams who want Lee I don’t think it will hurt the Mariners to wait to the deadline.

Theoretically, of course, Lee is worth more the more starts he can give you, so theoretically he is worth more now than on July 31st. But, since the real goal is the playoffs, he will be worth just as much to a team in the playoff hunt at the deadline as he is now.

As long as there a multiple teams who still want him. It will be the typical contest to see who blinks first.

“Lebron in Miami turns him into the biggest villain in the NBA.”

That’s one of the reasons I have trouble believing these reports about him going to Miami. Lebron’s camp obviously doesn’t want his decision to be reported before tonight, so I find it curious that we’re hearing so many leaks. I wouldn’t be surprised if this stuff is a smokescreen designed to generate buzz until he announces that he’s staying in Cleveland. I hope I’m wrong, because it would be nice to see a superstar leave money on the table for a better shot at winning. Your A-Rod comparison is very interesting, if he actually does get on a national stage and rip the heart out of Cleveland by joining Wade/Bosh, he better hope they win quickly and often.

    Swisher better win this thing!!!!

  140. BetterLivingThruChemistry July 8th, 2010 at 3:42 pm

    A couple of things…
The draft for next year is supposed to be quite deep. If the Yankees are very serious about looking to sign Lee, it might well be worth knowing the talent you are giving up to get him now via trade rather than lose the picks for him.

Hughes is pitching well, but he has already logged a decent amount of innings on his arm. The bullpen isn’t exactly the greatest part of the team either. Getting Lee could mean they could have Hughes move back to the bullpen to limit innings and giving them a long man as well.

CC, Lee, Andy and AJ would be a formidable rotation in the post season.

Javy can also become expendable if they trade for Lee and don’t look to put Hughes in the BP.

I think adding Lee gives the Yankees a better chance at putting away the other teams in the East. Quite possibly with the Yankees maintaining holding on to “best record”.

Lefty pitchers are highly valued, even when they are not all that great. Getting another lefty starter for YS is not a bad thing.

  141. Patrick July 8th, 2010 at 3:43 pm

By the way, SJ, what’s the word on Riley possibly taking over as coach?

  145. G. Love July 8th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

    SJ,

I understand why Lebron is doing what he did. It’s the same reason Clemens forced his way here to get his ring.

That said, there will be no joy when Lebron wins a championship. A nation of basketball fans aren’t going to rejoice in his success. He’ll be celebrated in Miami and that’s it. That might be enough, but I think the guy is egotistical and wants to be loved like Magic and Jordan and Bird were.

He won’t be. He’ll always be looked at as the guy who ran from his team to join an all star team.

Any championships he wins in Miami will have asterisks on them such as “he couldn’t win them alone in Cleveland”.

I’m upset for the Cleveland fans. If I were him I wouldn’t come to the Knicks either. While they got under the cap, they stripped that team of talent to the point that there was nothing there worth joining forces with.

This Miami move doesn’t guarantee anything. A lot of ego’s, including the head coach (which you know Riley will come out of retirement to be) to deal with there. It reeks of one of those “be careful what you wish for” type things.

Like I said, the NBA is going to turn into the David vs. Goliath with the rest of the teams in the league being David.

If Miami just dominates and cakewalks to the title, it will be the worst thing to happen to that sport. Hopefully, one of the David’s knock them off.

Hey, I didn’t ante up for my tix yet!

Gotta hear it from his mouth before I do that! lol

Spolstra is going to coach for a two major reasons:

    1. Wade LOVES him and Wade, as much or more than Riley, is driving this train.
    2. Riley is still stinging over what he did to Van Gundy. I think it would take the Heat playing very poorly for Riley to take over.

The Van Gundy thing all was over Shaq and the way Van Gundy choked in the Eastern conference finals against the Pistons.

Shaq went to Riley and told him, “either you take over or I won’t play for Van Gundy”.

Riley had no choice. He had to take over.

    This time is different.

Eric is a good coach and Wade absolutely loves him.

As long as he starts ok, I think he will be safe.

    GLove,

How is different than Arod coming to the Yankees? Its really the same thing.

As far as ego, I disagree. If it was about ego, these guys wouldn’t get together and LeBron would just go to NY.

ITs about winning. Wade orchestrated this entire thing.

Its Wade, not LeBron, who is willing to take a step back. You gotta give Wade a lot of credit for that.

Wade is the most popular athlete down here since Dan Marino. He is GOD down here.

He is Arod AND Jeter rolled up into one in this market.

He realizes that once LeBron hits town, LeBron is going to garner the ink. He doesn’t care. He wants to win.

Personally, I think most people are upset because the natural order of sports is rocked a bit.

Fans like teams to control situations. Trades, signings, cuts, etc.

When players get together and decide they want to play together, it upsets the natural order and fans don’t like it.

It was the same outcry when Arod was looking to get out of Texas.

If all three guys take deals that are friendly enough to add other parts to fill out the team, its pretty tough to say ego and selfishness is driving the train.

It would be three guys more concerned with winning than reps and marketing.

In that way, its pretty cool.

  190. SJ44 July 8th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

It doesn’t have to be cool for other fans other than Heat fans.

You think fans of other baseball teams like the Yankees? They hate everything about the Yankees.

Its good to be hated in sports. It means you are good AND feared.

There is nothing worse in sports than fans not caring either way about your team.

If everybody hates the Heat but Heat fans, that’s a VERY good thing.

It means they matter. That’s nice for a change.

  191. Lori July 8th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

The strange thing is the Mike Miller offer with the deadline on it.

Why did they put a deadline on the offer for tonight?

If they were 100% confident they were getting LeBron what’s the need to press Miller?

  196. G. Love July 8th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

    SJ,

I’m not disputing the players rights to do what they did. All the power to them.

I’m just saying that a player who has made it such a point to turn his name into a brand is going to change the perception of his brand for the worse by going to Miami.

That move will not be celebrated anywhere other than South Florida. It just won’t.

Fans won’t be watching Lebron on that team (which will be marketed as a dream team) and thinking, “Good for Lebron, it’s about time he gets one”.

If it does anything, it has the potential to turn Kobe into the darling of the rest of fans. It’s going to be Kobe vs. the dream team and he’s going to appear as the underdog.

Lebron is walking smack dab into the hatred that Arod garners around the league. He’s not going to be viewed as an ambassador of the game anymore. He’s going to be viewed as Arod.

Outside of Yankee fans there was no one in this country last year who were saying, “Good for Arod for finally getting his ring”.

That stuff is all extraneous and shouldn’t matter to the player, but Lebron better not get crestfallen when he wakes up tomorrow and the it’s the World vs. him.

He won’t get cheers in MSG and other arenas like he did when he was a Cav. He’s going to look like the player who used free agency to stack the deck against the rest of the league.

I’m not sure he’s going to love the perception of him and it could hurt him in the marketing dollars as well if people start to hate him for this.

  212. SJ44 July 8th, 2010 at 4:14 pm

    GLove,

I think these three guys have known for two years they were going to play together.

I don’t think this is something that was just hatched this off-season.

I think they all know what’s coming up and I don’t think they care.

They have talked about playing together since the Olympics. They even timed their contracts to make sure they are free at the same time.

I think everybody outside of Miami is ticked off because he isn’t going to their team. If indeed he goes to the Heat.

Cleveland believes he should be there for life because he’s from the area.

NY believes he should be there because they have convinced themselves one of the worst run franchises in sports should have LeBron work for them.

Chicago believes it should be them because they think he’s the missing link.

Miami has no national following. So, if they win, folks don’t like it because it doesn’t fit what they think LeBron should do.

Bottom line…..if he wins, it will matter. Just as it did with Arod last year.

Its all about winning. If he wins in Miami, his brand isn’t going to be hurt in the slightest.

I don’t think his brand is going to be hurt at all regardless of where he plays because he’s so solid off the court, you don’t have to worry about him embarrassing you.

    1. Wade LOVES him and Wade, as much or more than Riley, is driving this train.

That’s basically what Stephen A. just said on Francesa’s show. Basically that Wade really likes Spolstra. He also said that Wade likes Riley the executive but thinks he can wear thin as a coach. I can DEFINITELY see that being the case.

So SJ, when you do re-up your season tickets (and you will, because both know Lebron will be on the Heat), where are your seats? On the floor, or a suite?

    BIG AL,

Its impossible to say what Jordan would do because the world has changed since MJ retired.

    Social media has changed everything.

Its all about controlling the message, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

    Its a completely different world.

MJ was no angel. He punched out teammates. He was a degenerate gambler, and was very high maintainence.

The difference is, no camera phones, extensive internet, social media, etc, to chronicle his every move.

The world has changed and these guys are really the guinea pigs in terms of how they get out, and control, their message.

  226. FanSince'48 July 8th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

“Why is it still allowing us to vote?”

Because Peter Gammons was crying that they needed more time.

  227. Patrick July 8th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

When the rumor that all 3 big FA’s were going to the Heat I was initially annoyed. But thinking about it, I knew Lebron was never going to join the Nets. Maybe he will in 3 years but not this year. And I know that my team, the Nets, aren’t going to do much this year. Maybe they make the playoffs, but probably not.

So all that being said, it will be fun as a fan of basketball to watch what the Heat do. As good as they are with Lebron I wouldn’t put them as a lock to win against the Lakers.

I think Miami with Lebron is the best team in the East – the Magic have Dwight and Nelson but Vince isn’t that great any more. The Celtics are getting old and Perkins might be out all year. The Cavs are nothing, the Hawks are good but nothing special. But once they get out of the East, the Lakers could be the better team. They have so much talent, and of course, Phil Jackson.

  228. Tyler July 8th, 2010 at 4:23 pm

So the starting 5 on Miami will be Bosh, Wade, James, Chalmers, and free agent signing?

How is Chalmers as a pro? I remember him from KU and his shot against Memphis obviously but how has he been as a pro? Also, won’t they have to move Beasley to be able to take on all 3 contracts? At this point who would want Beaseley. All I see him as is another supremely talented guy who is troubled beyond repair.

The Knicks will go for Anthony next year. If they get him and Amare can stay healthy and maybe they can swing a deal for Parker or if we want to dream CP3 then they will have a nice start. Especially if Danilo keeps developing. And the Nets….. I don’t know what to make of the Nets ha.

What’s interesting is, how the Heat fill out the rest of the roster if LeBron comes on board.

Do they complete a sign and trade with Beasley and sign Mike Miller?

Do they kick the tires on Josh Howard?

Do they move on a point guard like Luke Ridenour or Raymond Felton?

Do they keep Mario Chalmers or trade him for Rudy Fernandez?

Do they bring back Udonis Haslem, probably Dwayne Wade’s best friend, on a mid-level exception deal? Would Udonis take less money to come back to Miami?

The interesting part would be how Riley intends on filling out the rest of the roster. That’s what is going to be fascinating to watch in the coming weeks.

How is it not going to hurt his brand? He had the chance to go to 2 franchises (knicks, nets) with disenchanted fans. He could have put them on his shoulders and carried them back to relevance. He would have brought all of their fans and more back to the sport.

Now? I continue to not care about the knicks/nets AND i continue to not care about the heat.

If he goes to Miami he may not lose a ton of money, but the sport loses mine.

There’s no guarantee Carmelo Anthony comes to the Knicks. If Carmelo Anthony signs his max extension with the Nuggets, he won’t be a Knick next year.

If he doesn’t sign it, you can pencil him in for the Knicks and hope and pray Miami doesn’t somehow figure out a way to make cap room for him by next off season.

  240. Irreverent Discourse July 8th, 2010 at 4:27 pm

I have no idea how to speculate on filling out an NBA roster. Wouldn’t you need a spreadsheet and a computer program? That’s why speculating on baseball trades is more fun. It’s not like solving simultaneous equations with multiple variables.

  242. G. Love July 8th, 2010 at 4:28 pm

Every veteran thirsting for a ring is going to come to Miami willing to play for minimums. It will be a complete all star team past and present.

not so sure about that :)

Anything can happen in a playoff series, of course, but the Heat will be the unquestioned favorites to win the title.

I honestly believe the C’s and Lakers were dead even last season. Will the Lakers improve? Will the Celtics? Or will they both just be a year older?

  244. Patrick July 8th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

    SJ44,

    I don’t think the Heat get a MLE…

With Bosh I think Beasley is unnecessary so yeah I think they’ll trade him and sign Miller.

They will need some big bodies to help Bosh… he isn’t exactly known for his defensive abilities.

  245. Patrick July 8th, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Irreverent, you telling me you won’t watch a Championship matchup between the Heat and Lakers? That’s a huge draw

  246. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 4:30 pm

the Heat just need to fill the team out with defensive players, rebounders, and a Steve Kerr clone.

That shouldn’t be too hard to find. With the Big Three, they just need role players who want a chance at some rings.

  247. Tyler July 8th, 2010 at 4:30 pm

    SJ-

Wouldnt they basically be forced to trade Beasley if they sign all 3? I thought with the cap they would only have like 11,000 left after the big 3 sign so everybody would have to be for the league minimum if Michael stays. They also mentioned the possibility of Derek Fisher signing there but I can’t imagine he leaves the Lakers where, until the Heat prove themselves, he still has the best chance of winning.

Josh Howard’s an interesting possibility. If Lebron, Wade etc. keep his head on straight he would really be a solid player on the Heat. Good defender and can put up points too. How much would a guy like Marcus Camby sign for? He would give them a hell of a defensive presence in the paint. Donno if he would fit in the cap though.

Not too knowledgable about basketball but I’m trying to get into it lol.

  248. Nick in SF in Larkspur July 8th, 2010 at 4:31 pm

  250. m July 8th, 2010 at 4:31 pm

    ID,

I think that a lot of people (not me) pulled for LeBron with the Cavs. City hasn’t won a championship since before he was born, blah, blah, blah. Next MJ, blah, blah, blah.

Some, but not all of that support will go with him if he goes to Miami.

I kind of thought LBJ to the Knicks would have a good storyline. If he could rebuild that franchise, it would really put him over the top.

    G Love-

I was under the impression that Melo wasn’t going to sign that extension with Denver. He seems to me to be like a guy who would love the exposure of NYC as he has kind of been second fiddle at times in the media out in Denver. Him and Amare, a point guard (maybe Parker who I know has lost a step but is still servicable), Danilo, you have the makings of a good team.

Plus, if the Knicks start winning again, players will flock there. People want to play in MSG. The only problem is that the Knicks have been so poorly run and terrible. If they prove they can turn themselves around, people will jump at the chance to put on the orange and blue.

  255. Irreverent Discourse July 8th, 2010 at 4:35 pm

patrick – why is it a huge draw? because lebron chose to make it so?

no, i won’t watch something like that. i watch sports for entertainment, for the sport of it… if you will… and not knowing before the season who’s coming out on top.

not… whatever this is. this is just taking a boring sport and making it worse.

  256. Tyler July 8th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

If LBJ goes to the Heat, he will become one of the most hated players in the league, not that he cares and if I were him I wouldn’t care either as long as I win a championship and make my money.

LBJ to the Cavs would bring the most positive support as he is loyal and such.

LBJ to the Knicks would bring some negative attention because everybody is jealous of NYC and it would look like he’s just going for the exposure for the time being as the Knicks still have a ways to go. But if he wins in NYC, he will become a living legend here and that will be more than enough to conquer those initial feelings. He would be the biggest star in sports. worldwide.

Interesting thing to factor in is the new CBA next year which will be assumed to lower player salaries. Join the Heat for the vet’s min, or make your money now while you still can?

  261. LGY July 8th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

If LeBron does not come to the Knicks tonight.

“The Warriors and Knicks have agreed in principle to a sign-and-trade deal that would send power forward David Lee to Golden State for Anthony Randolph, Ronny Turiaf and Kelenna Azubuike, multiple sources confirmed on Thursday. “

  262. G. Love July 8th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

    Tyler,

That’s my problem with the Knicks. They brought in Walsh and D’antoni to prove to the rest of the league they weren’t poorly run and had turned a corner and it didn’t work. The damage, Isiah, the Dolans and Marbury did to the brand still hasn’t recovered.

After whiffing on Lebron, you think the Dolan’s are going to be understanding and give those the coach and GM more time to make things click?

If they Knicks don’t show a major improvement next season, they’ll fire the coach and the GM and the merry go round will start again.

I have no faith in that franchise because of who owns it.

    Tyler,

I actually think the Jermaine ONeal deal is a very good one for the C’s.

They do need to replace Rasheed and ONeal put up very good role player #s for the Heat.

    In 28 minutes, 14pts, 7reb, 1.4 blocks, 53% from the floor.

That is the kind of player any team needs as long as they aren’t expecting starter minutes or all-star production.

It’s a very good move for the Celtics for sure.

Nabakov was a Shark. The Blues traded for Halak from the Canadiens this offseason. He is the best young Blues goalie maybe in franchise history and at least since Curtis Joseph in the early ’90s. The Blues have had the top prospect pool in hockey the past 3 years. They surprisingly made the playoffs 2 years ago with a miracle run and missed out last year. The future is bright for the Blues definitely even if they were frustrating last year. Alot depends on the young guys developing. I think in 3 years the Blues will win the Cup. The only problem is Chicago is loaded still also and pretty young…

If Bard and Papelbum have to pitch every game from the 15th-31st, they’ll be on the DL by Labor Day.

That’s not a bad signing. Atkins is a career .285/.350/.800 hitter and is only 30 yrs old.
Obviously last year (Rockies) and this season have gone wrong for him, but what player hasn’t been discouraged while playing with the horrible O’s?
Compared to what the Yanks have at AAA, its an improvement.
Perhaps his swing can be straigtened out by Wynegar/K.Long. If so, they would have a valuable bench player. Russo is clearly not ready for Prime time.

The Mariners requested at least three prospects from the Yankees, including Montero, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. But while the Yankees are dealing from strength (they have two more good catching prospects in Austin Romine and Gary Sanchez), they do not have have a major need in their rotation and are unlikely to overpay under the circumstances.

As much as I love Romine, I don’t really want to see the guy in the playoffs if he’s not in pinstripes.

GUARANTEE KNICKS LOST OUT ON LEBRON

His 25 rooms booked in a Miami hotel for tonight I’m sure is a coincidence, but from rotoworld.com…
Isiah Thomas visited LeBron James on Wednesday night to make one final pitch for him to join the Knicks.
As Frank Isola said on Twitter: “The Heat sent Pat Riley while the Knicks sent a guy that doesn’t even work for the organziation.” Considering that everything Isiah has touched since his playing days ended has turned to mush, this was a very interesting choice for Jim Dolan to make. It also creates some thought that Isiah may end up playing a prominent role for the Knicks again. Either way, Isiah’s name is now going to be associated with LeBron’s decision as it relates to the Knicks, win or lose. Jul. 8 – 5:07 pm et

  329. blake July 8th, 2010 at 5:13 pm

Ramos and Hicks are both good prospects and both good bets to play in the big leagues. Can’t see the M’s passing on that in order to take draft picks that would be years away from the majors if the make it at all.. I think he gets traded and probably soon.

  330. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 5:14 pm

Oswalt would be 12-3 on any playoff contender right now.

  331. balls in face July 8th, 2010 at 5:15 pm

  332. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos July 8th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

I will hold fast to the idea that you don’t give up prospects if you can get the get in the off-season. I don’t think it would be wise to give up Montero or Romine at this juncture (at some point, probably, but I don’t think now is the time). I think the Yankees will beat Cliff Lee this weekend (if he is not traded) and I think people will relax after they do so.

The Yankees beat the Phillies last year and Lee pitched 2 games, right?

Again, my theory of choice is: on any given day, yadda, yadda, yadda…

    :)

  333. Irreverent Discourse July 8th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

    re: the Sox

I never heard Gammons mention that the Sox had played 46 home games to just 36 on the road prior to the Rays series.

That is quite a disparity this late in the season.

“The Yankees beat the Phillies last year and Lee pitched 2 games, right?”

    —————–

The point isn’t that the Yankees can’t win without Lee or against Lee.

It’s all about improving your chances to win.

How much he improves your chances is the question.

I just don’t like hearing that “we did it before so we can assume we’ll do it again”

George Brett used to say something to the effect of “Whenever I’m not trying to improve myself, I know someone else is.”

there is a cost/benefit to every move. Figuring out that equation is the million dollar question.

If Lee means WS win, Romine can play for the Red Sox for all I care.

I remember reading somewhere, recently, that the Yanks got an extra $72M in revenue in 2009 from the playoffs. That’s a lot of money.

So, I think that BD is on to something, in that if Cliff Lee improves your chances of winning, and getting that $72M, then he is absolutely worth it to the Yankees.

That’s the bottom line. Improving your chances to get to that big payoff. If he does that, then he’s worth the incremental amount of salary and the prospects you deal.

Cliff Lee will definitely help the Yankees in October. The only question is the price that is required. And Cash will drag it out as long as he feels he needs to in order to minimize the price.

  341. blake July 8th, 2010 at 5:29 pm

  343. Rick July 8th, 2010 at 5:32 pm

At the current pace the Red Sox will be lucky to maintain a .500 winning %, and by mid-August, they’ll be 8-10 games behind the Yankees and Rays. The Yankees have always been a strong second half team, and if Boston continues to flounder as they’ve been, it’s all over.

    …………………………

That’s correct Big Al. Boston has no trading chips to use other than Papelbon which leaves an already overworked Daniel Bard as the closer. As Epstein said months ago, this is a bridge year. This is as close to 1st place as they’ll get this year.
The Rays have farm system talent …… Boston doesn’t unless Gammons is to be believed.

  344. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 5:33 pm

    Joe from LI,

I certainly can’t argue against those who don’t want to give up prospects for Lee.

I just think you can’t overlook the potential value that adding Lee could and should bring for the team who gets him.

Whether or not he signs with the Yanks in 2011 doesn’t change the fact that a World Series in 2010 is up for grabs.

If $72M is accurate and Cliff Lee does increase their chances by a decent margin, it seems like a good deal to me.

  345. m July 8th, 2010 at 5:33 pm

Yankees didn’t trade for Halladay (not for lack of trying) and they didn’t land Santana (although they did have their hat in the ring.

I will be supremely peeved if they passed on Halladay for Lee.

  346. blake July 8th, 2010 at 5:34 pm

If the Yankees are pretty sure Montero will be able to catch…at least for a few years then I would consider moving Romine for Lee because I think he increases the probability of winning this year enough to make it worthwhile.

That’s JMO, which isn’t worth a lot. I understand the other side of the argument and have no problem with it eithrrm

    m,

true… but i’d say Montero was a darn good offer!

I’m glad they didn’t get Halladay and obviously Santana.

But Lee, for some reason, intrigues me.

Of course, I like the Yanks the way they already are too.

What if Lebron shocks the world and surprises us with a Knicks choice.?
    Anyone think this possible?

  352. Ed H. July 8th, 2010 at 5:41 pm

The issue of whether to trade for Cliff Lee or not comes down to whether the Yanks value short term over long term or visa versa. Short term, of course is making a trade in order to increase the chances of winning this year and long term is to hold onto prospects to maximize the chances that we get a top catcher to replace Jorge. If The Boss was still running things, I’d bet that they would go for the short term benefit. Hal and Cashman tend to value the long term choices. If I had to place a bet it would be that they don’t trade for Lee unless they can get a real bargain (which is most likely not going to happen.)

  358. Joe from Long Island July 8th, 2010 at 5:45 pm

They have three young catchers who are ML ready or soon to be – Cisco, Montero, and Romine.

Cisco has proven that he can play at the major league level. Montero has a bat that has everyone drooling. Romine, while everyone agrees has a lot of potential (there’s that word, again…) is a AA catcher at the moment. Maybe he is two years away.

The Yankees can get an awful lot of money in two years…That’s a lot of October baseball.

If Romine is the lead player/asset going from the Yankees in that proposed swap, I think I do it. Even if Romine has a good ML career, and I hope he does, that brings an awful lot back to NY. Cliff Lee, a lefthanded stud in Yankee Stadium. That’s pretty tempting.

There’s still an awful lot of moving pieces that Cash has to deal with, so a lot can still happen. But a deal like that definitely gets your attention.

It’s July 7th, and Tampa is two game out. It’s a long season. Anything can still happen. And $72M is an awful lot of money, waiting in October….

With Jorge’s uncertain health and age, Montero, Romine, Sanchez and even Cervelli to a certain extent are untouchables at this point unless we desperately need a hole filled.

    We don’t.

It’d be nice to have an impact bat like Willingham or DeJesus and an elite reliever like Soria or Marmol, but if other teams totally disregard all prospects outside of our catchers, and there are plenty of excellent ones throughout our minor league system, I’d rather Cashman not do business with those GM’s.

Our farm system deserves more respect. This could take some time.

In the meantime, we’ll have to settle for Cody Ross types and internal solutions for the bullpen it seems.

  371. Rich on the 6 train July 8th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

We talk about Lee, but the bullpen is the real issue and a utility player. I wonder why the yanks don’t trade Miranda and a few rule 5 players that they will not have room for next year.
miranda has to have some value and the Yanks have no room for him. He is out of options next year. Then you could get Montero some first base experience.

I think that the only way that the equation shifts toward a trade for Lee being a good long term move would be if Lee agreed to a contract extension, bypassing free agency. This would eliminate the risk of him being overwhelmed by another team’s offer when he is a free agent. In that situation, they might do it to get the benefit of having Lee locked in for a few years.

  377. m July 8th, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Whomever Cliff Lee chooses. Don’t know if he can pitch to Posada. ;)

  378. BIG AL July 8th, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Why is the NBA OK with players getting together in 2006, and planning how their contracts should be written, so they can join forces to create a team top heavy in talent. If owner’s tried this, there would be hell to pay. The owner’s pay big money to buy a team, and have all the financial risks, but, it’s the players that get all the rewards, without any of the risks. What would the NBA say if the Knicks had talked to these players, and had agreements in place when they became FA, so they could get 3 or 4 top FA and build a championship team, they’d be killed! If it’s not allowed one way, it should be not allowed the other. The players now run the league, not the owner’s, nor that idiot Stern.

Everyone knows that Parker and Carmelo want to play in NY – if the latter doesn’t sign an extension, he’ll be here next year. Supposedly the players the Knicks would be getting in the Lee sign and trade are pretty good, esp. Randolph. I trust Donnie Walsh………

I am not convinced that Lee is a difference maker for the Yankees this season. And I’m not convinced that he is the missing link for the teams the Yankees may be going head-to-head with in the playoffs.

I don’t get wanting to trade prospects (good ones) for a guy who we can sign next off-season. Not only that, but it screws up your rotation. Putting Phil in the pen is just wrong – and Javy can’t go there. Get Lee just to say we got him? Just so he doesn’t go to another team? That’s not happening.

  401. YankeeRay July 8th, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Francessa saying that LBJ diminishes his legacy by hitching his wagon to Wade. I disagree with that theory.
Did Chamberlain diminish his value hooking up with West? Oscar with Jabbar? Arod to the core 4?
Any free agent in our time either chooses to go to a place where they can win or where the biggest paycheck is.
He isn’t going for the money but to a place where he thinks he can win with 2 of his closest friends who happen to be 2 of the better players in the league. This is a unique situation.
Where should he go Mike to the knicks? If Carmello goes there with LBJ then that won’t be diminishing? Should he stay in Cleveland where he feels he can’t win?
It’s his time to choose. Let it go.
No one knows what’s in his mind. He’s still with his childhood sweetheart and has kids. He lives in Akron and maybe he has no desire to live in Chicago or NY. Maybe he hates the cold and wants to raise his kids on the beach. No one knows.
Let it go and let him go where he wants. Who cares.

I must disagree with those that think Lee will not be a difference maker. If Lee goes to the Rangers or Twins, he could very well make the difference as to their winning or losing to the Yankees. The Rangers are playing good ball, as are the Twins, and both have good hitting teams. So, yes I strongly believe Lee could be the difference to our success if he lands in the AL on one of those teams.

ID, I’m sure they will make other moves……..and I can be patient.I think Walsh knows what he’s doing.

  426. Irreverent Discourse July 8th, 2010 at 6:04 pm

big al, we get both of those teams in a short series assuming we finish 1 overall, so lee’s impact would be less.

  427. BD (Boston Dave) July 8th, 2010 at 6:04 pm

what were the final vote totals?

I’m curious how many total votes were cast. I’m assuming there was a TON!

Is MLB taking a dig at Swish??

“Swisher had the all-time campaigning day in Final Vote history on Wednesday, par none. Using baseball’s most-followed Twitter account (1,220,890 followers) to his advantage, he sought out and got endorsements from New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, actress Jessica Alba and “The Apprentice” co-star Ivanka Trump (among others). Then that night he was a triple shy of the cycle in leading the Yankees to a 6-2 victory over the Athletics.

On Thursday morning, it was announced that he held a narrow lead in a “virtual tie” with Youkilis. It didn’t take Swisher long to tweet another kick in the rear to voters. He typed: “We’re in the final stretch. Can’t thank yall enough for your support. Let’s finish strong!” And naturally he used the #SENDSWISH hashtag so that as many fans as possible could find his tweet, along with a link to the ballot.

Swisher’s approach has been as opposite as could be from that of many other athletes, including most of the Final Ballot candidates. The Wall Street Journal even ran a story Wednesday morning on his enthusiasm of promoting himself publicly.”

Betsy – agreed about Donnie Walsh.

And, that was MY vote that got Swish in!

  433. Irreverent Discourse July 8th, 2010 at 6:07 pm

votto had 13.7 million votes, swisher had 9.8million

no word on the second place votes

  434. vinny-b July 8th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

wow. MLB Network gave no love, to Swish

lot of love to Votto. And none to Swish

  435. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) July 8th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

BD, I wouldn’t do it – not at all, it’s just not worth it to me. I wouldn’t have traded Montero for Halladay and I wouldn’t trade Romine plus for Lee; I don’t think it makes sense and Cash won’t do it. Why didn’t he trade Hughes for Santana?

As I said, the rotation is 5 deep (sort of ) and it’s also simply not worth having to fit Lee in somehow by making a trade or putting a starter in the pen.

Congrats to Swish and hurray for us!!!! We sent Swish!!!!

    :)

  437. Irreverent Discourse July 8th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

BD – i wouldn’t call it a dig unless you look down on the way swisher went about his business. i dont sense any judgement in the mlb.com article, just what happened.

i think he’s a smart guy that knows how the modern world works, and played it to his advantage.

  438. CS IN LA July 8th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!!!!! He deserves it.

  439. Erin July 8th, 2010 at 6:09 pm

    Woo-hoo!!

    Congrats to Swisher :D

  440. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) July 8th, 2010 at 6:09 pm

BD, I also think that’s the thinking that got the Yankees in trouble in the past. Being a favorite isn’t good enough?

  441. Erin July 8th, 2010 at 6:09 pm

New Post: Nick Swisher named to all-star team

  444. Doreen - GTLU Stuff & Photos July 8th, 2010 at 6:14 pm

Since when is self-promotion a bad thing in America??? Plus, you know with Swish it’s all in fun (though, of course he wanted to win!). :)
