Phil Hughes gets back on track in Seattle
In his final start before the break, Phil Hughes pitched like he belonged in the All-Star Game. He walked none for the second time this season and picked up his 11th win in a 6-1 game against Seattle. Mark Teixeira went deep from both sides of the plate for the 10th time in his career. Hughes, Andy Pettitte and CC Sabathia are the first trio of teammates to have 11 wins at the all-star break since the Astros in 1999 (Jose Lima, Mike Hampton and Shane Reynolds).

Associated Press photo of Hughes. I know photographers have taken that same photo of Hughes several times, but I always like it.

Chan Ho Park is awesome.
How the heck did did Tex know our record off-hand?
I bet most fans wouldn’t even know that
I guess sucks is a synonym for awecome.
Great game by Phil, Teix, etc. though.
Chan Ho Park = bum
Nice win though
or awesome
Fortunately the Mariners were not able to find a to steal this win away from the Yankees at the last minute.
Chad, I love that picture, too……..Great way for Phil to go into the break.
Rich in NJ,
Glad to see your alive! Thought today may have made you ill.
The Yankees are hot, hot, hot! Almost @ 25 games over .500. Before the AS break.
TB 3 GB
Boston 5 GB
It’s all good. Even after a crazy, topsy-turvy day.
Nice road trip, lol
Pitching in TX is going to be miserable for Lee unless he likes sweltering heat.
Sorry, I forgot the sarcasm tag.
LGY
Thanks. I am a little ill, but I think there’s probably a physiological reason.
Well today was a strange day to be a Yankee fan. Like most of us, the first I heard of the potential Lee trade was this morning. I was able to follow the story sporadically throughout the day. By the time I left work, Texas was about to officially acquire him.
This morning everyone was saying it was a done deal to the Yankees. Personally I wasn’t in favor of it. In the end he winds up in Texas. Could have been a lot worse IMO.
But it goes to show what a hot story will do. Well over 2000 comments yesterday and a blog fueled by a potential huge trade. Lohud must be very happy.
If I learned anything today it was that Seattle is almost impossible to deal with (Washburn and now Lee) and the fact that the Mariner’s GM really strung Cash along and backed out of a supposed “done deal”. He clearly shopped it, no matter what he says. I’d be very surprised if you saw any major trades in the future between these 2 teams, at least not while Cashman is still GM. I’m sure he’s not too happy.
Regarding the ALMOST M’s/Yankees deal…I can see both sides and understand both arguments. But to me, this is a guy you can get in the offseason. He wants to play here. Cash will get it done. They don’t NEED him this year. It wasn’t necessary to acquire him.
Last year Lee dominated the Yankees in the World Series and we STILL won. This year our rotation is BETTER than last year. For me personally there comes a point when its not fun to watch the games. When you are expected to win and if you lose you were chokers. When your roster is stacked with so many all stars its almost embarassing. A trade for Cliff Lee would have put me in that place.
Now next year is a completely different story. Vasquez ansd Pettitte could both be gone Even if Pettitte comes back you get Lee to replace Vasquez, and your rotation is noticably better. I have no problem with that.
But doing it now and either putting Hughes in the pen or shipping out Vasquez, IMO that’s not a great move. And I haven’t even talked about the players we were sending them, including our best hitting prospect since Robinson Cano.
In the end I’m happy it didn’t get done. If Lee dominates us for the Rangers in the playoffs maybe I’ll change my mind, but like I said, he dominated us last year and we still won. Or we could knock him around. Or the Rangers could miss the playoffs. Either way, there’s a small chance this trade hurts our team, and that’s really all that matters.
“How the heck did did Tex know our record off-hand?”
Inside joke with Tex and Curry. Curry gave the record in a postgame earlier this week and Tex corrected him thinking his numbers were wrong but Curry was right and Tex was wrong.
Per post-game show, Eiland had mentioned pre-game that Phil’s arm slot was dropping recently……..so perhaps his struggles were mainly due to mechanical issues.
Nancy Newman is awful. I will be glad when Bob Lorenz comes back from vacation.
Yanks will be alone in 1st place at the break with the best record in MLB. That’s a certainty.
i like nancy
Sooooo….Eiland comes back, surprise! Burnett and Hughes clean up their acts.
Coincidence, I think not.
I don’t think Nancy is very good either – she always sounds so stilted and awkward.
Okay, so maybe we can force Seattle to trade Felix Hernandez for some prospects by tomorrow night?
TB lost tonight. Right?
“Nancy Newman is awful. I will be glad when Bob Lorenz comes back from vacation.”
She is, and I’m not high on Lorenz either. I think most of YES’ personnel stink, as does the network’s programming apart from the games.
Just so I am not completely negative, I think Curry is a lot better than Kim Jones. She’s OK as a postgame reporter, but her in game reports are like scratching a painted wall.
My family loves Kim. I like Jack Curry too
Curry’s great – I respect his opinions, so I always look forward to hearing what he has to say.
Young Master Hughes ftw!
SAS,
Yes, they did. And badly, too. It was 3-1(3-2?) in the top of the 8th. They ended up losing 8-3.
I didn’t even think about the possibilty of Hughes missing Eiland.
Ah, Phil missed Dave too. He was pushing the ball and Dave wasn’t around to notice it.
He has a great speaking voice. His opinions I have read for years. He is more honest than Kim, not so networky. I don’t know quite how to put it.
m,
Thanks. We were out tonight.
pat,
You’d think Eiland could’ve at least texted Girardi with the corrections.
I suppose people will read that as a criticism of Harkey, but I think he’d admit he doesn’t know mechanics – he’s not a PC. I heard those comments – not surprised. As a young pitcher, he would be more likely to need a PC than a veteran…….
The funniest thing was when Kim missed a Hughes game. Phil told the reporters to figure out who would go first or something like that.
I know this has been talked about 1 million times today but I thought it was funny. The espn tv scroll just said Lee was traded to the Rangers after the Mariners had agreed in principle to a deal with the Yanks. Jack Z. that punk. When is Cashman going to release a statement like the Cavs owner did? lol
The criticism shouldn’t be directed at Harkey, it should be directed at the Yankees for not having a real pitching coach in Eiland’s absence.
Not making the trade with the Mariners, for whatever reason, was a blessing in disguise.

I guess sucks is a synonym for awecome.
Great game by Phil, Teix, etc. though.
———————————————————————————————————————-
That must mean that neftali Feliz must stink to high heaven, huh?
6-2 lead loads bases, 2 outs, 2 strikes on the batter and gives up a game tying grand slam to Corey Patterson.
I thought pitching coaches didn’t matter?
I don’t know what it means other than Park reminds me of Latroy Hawkins. I think he can pitch well somewhere else, but not as a Yankee, for whatever rational or irrational reason.

Did you hear the masn broadcaster scream? Man it was hilarious.
Pitching coaches do matter.
They usually say hitting coaches don’t matter, but there are occasionally outliers, like Charlie Lau, and not Kevin Long (to name just two).
not = now
m
I think it may be more about how the message is delivered or received than the message itself.
K Long and Eiland both seem to have really earned the trust of the players so they are willing to believe or at least try anything they suggest.
Eiland hasn’t been able to fix Joba. Not that anyone necessarily can, but they need to try someone else.
Night all!
Fire Eiland because of Joba? I’m glad the Yankees won’t be doing that anytime soon.
Jerkface nobody cares about your spreadsheet numbers, did you just make that crap up? I’d rather know how many ribbies hitters have against Hughes in a 1-2 count
—
Hitters have a .256 .256 .308 .564 line in 1-2 counts. he has had 78 PA’s end on 1-2 and has given up 20 hits.
For a comparison, hitters are .089 .105 .143 .248 on 1-2 vs CC Sabathia in 57 PA, only 5 hits.

Way late but that was a WOOSH.
My comment was extremely lame though, it wasn’t even that funny so really the joke is on me.

Joba needs to fix Joba.

Who else is going to setup Rivera?
Texas blows late inning leads to Baltimore back-to-back days
Game is still going on… 7-6 Os in the top of the 10th

Despite the distortion by others (I’m looking at you, Betsy), I didn’t say they should fire Eiland or necessarily send Joba down now, although I think Roberston could handle the role equally as well. Parenthetically, for all we know, one reason they were willing to overpay for Lee was to free up Hughes so that Joba could undergo some remedial training.
My point, however, is why couldn’t they have Aldred work with Joba between games while he is still on the roster in NY.
Eiland’s sensibilities can’t be that delicate that he would be offended.
So to Carl, maybe Joba can’t fix Joba. I just think there is too much talent there not to try every possible option.
Nancy Newman is nice to look at.
Baltimore may be getting desperate for bodies….any bodies. Pie is out again with a strained quad and Wieters is now out with a groin pull/strain.
Rich,
I’m glad you got my joke. I was worried that you wouldn’t.
The best option to “fix” Joba is to go down. Of course it sounds silly now that he’s hitting 98-99 on the gun. He’s good to go, until he isn’t.
Seriously, he just needs to accept and heed the advice that he’s being given. If there are too many voices, reduce it to one. IMO, that should be Eiland. Who would gladly accept any insight, as they did with Nardi & Hughes 2 yes ago.
Where in Baltimore playing…Hawaii?
Cashman may actually have gotten something right with the Hughes rules. The Yankees finally put Hughes in the bullpen last year where he learned how to get big league hitters out (keep bringing the 95-96 mph heat). It looks like he’s getting a little tired. It takes stamina to keep throwing high heat for entire starts, start after start. Don’t let the Seattle game mislead you, their offense sucks. Also, Hughes has got a terrific looking curveball, but that’s the thing that been getting hammered for home runs lately. Moving forward, he needs to learn how to mix it in better when his fastball is a little down.
