Report: Steinbrenner in Tampa hospital (with UPDATES)
There are two reports out there about George Steinbrenner being taken to a Tampa-area hospital. Here is one and here is the other. Information is very murky at this time so I’ll keep updating this post with news as it comes out.
UPDATE, 9:25 a.m.: I just spoke to Howard Rubenstein, who is Steinbrenner’s long-time PR man, and he cut off the conversation after only a few seconds. He said a “we will have a statement shortly” on the situation and that he could not confirm anything “at this moment.” It sounds as though Steinbrenner was reportedly hospitalized Monday night with a heart attack. Keep it here for updates.
UPDATE, 9:48 a.m.: Chad here. The Associated Press is reporting that Steinbrenner has died. They are citing “a person close to George Steinbrenner” saying he passed away this morning.

Thank you Sam, we fans would be grateful for any updates you give.
I can’t take this. Sheppard and now Steinbrenner? What is going on????
Someone just told me that on WPLJ they said he had a massive heart attack.
My thoughts are definitely with the Steinbrenner and Yankee family
LoHudYankees Just spoke to Howard Rubenstein, Boss PR man – said “we will have a statement shortly.” Would not confirm anything “at this moment.”
Tampa TV News station BN9 is reporting that George has died.

Sam’s update showing up on Twitter but not here?
“Just spoke to Howard Rubenstein, Boss PR man – said “we will have a statement shortly.” Would not confirm anything “at this moment.” “
Hope that report out of Tampa is not true. A very sad week for the Yankee family.First Bob Sheppard and now George.
thoughts and prayers to George and the Steinbrenner family
pat-Sam did post an update
Thoughts and prayers with the Boss and his family. I’m hoping for a healthy recovery for Mr. Steinbrenner.
Report from BN9 has been rescinded
RiverAveBlues FWIW, @BN9 has rescinded their report of the Boss? death. AFAIK, he?s in the hospital in critical condition following a heart attack.
Prayers our to George and the family… Hope all is okay.
Yes, was just about to post that they have rescinded and now say he’s in the hosiptal in very critical condition, whatever that means. George is a pretty tough guy, if anyone can pull through this, he is the one.
Medicine can do wonders today, and the Boss is a fighter.
If anyone can overcome this a Man like GS can.
Hoping for the best.
Not to make light of a truly sad event but if George has passed maybe we can take some solace in the fact that when he enters those pearly gates his arrival will be “announced” by a familiar voice.
Not good news in any event. Prayers to the Steinbrenners.
My thoughts and prayers go out to George and the Steinbrenner family. This is not a good week for the Yankee family.
Hang in there Boss !!!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I work in sports radio here in Miami and he has reportedly died
What a horrible day for us Yankee fans. I would *HOPE* this news is inaccurate, but we will have to wait and see…
My thoughts and prayers with the Steinbrenner family.
Glad that earlier report was rescinded. Hope he pulls through. ON a happier note, congratulation to Michael Kay onhis engagement to former FOX 5 morning host Jodi Applegate. She’s a beauty!

Prayers and wishes for George of peace and comfort.
Prayers and good thoughts to Mr. Steinbrenner and his family.
For everything you did to restore this franchise to glory… (twice!),
Mr. Steinbrenner, I thank you.
I heard from a good source he passed away. My wishes go out to the Steinbrenner family
Although it wouldn’t be surprising for an 80-year old man in poor health, I hope it isn’t too, too dire. Sheppard and Steinbrenner both in the same week would be too much. Get Yogi round-the-clock protection.
God speed Mr Steinbrenner. You were indeed a winner, and stopped at nothing giving us the best possible baseball product. And for that, I will always thank you.
My thoughts and prayers with the Steinbrenners
He’s passed. Sad day. RIP
Thanks for EVERYTHING, Boss.
george steinbrenner is in hospital and may or may not have already died
All we as a fanbase can do is give up our prayers for George
Now BN9 just says they have unconfirmed reports that he’s in the hospital. Nothing about condition.
Thanks for everything, Boss.

My thoughts are with the Steinbrenner family.

Oh, so sad.
R.I.P. George “The Boss” Steinbrenner.
Rough week for the Yankee family, but if there is any consolation in this, when George passed, the Yankees were the reigning World Champions and in first place in the division. I am sure he liked that, bullpen meltdowns aside.
RIP to the most dedicated owner in sports. Farewell Big Stein!
RIP Boss. You will be missed
This is an ending of an era. RIP Boss. Thank you for all you did for us Yankee fans.

Let’s enjoy the peace before the trolls start a-coming.

May I suggest a blog moment of silence for the next minute for the Boss?

Even though you knew this day was coming, it’s not easy to deal with.

Thanks for the memories, George. RIP.
What a bad week and it’s only Tuesday.
a sad week in Yankee land…at least the Boss died knowing his team was in first place…it makes last year’s championship all the more special.

RIP George Steinbrenner…
Damn that’s some sad news. Let’s win another one for him!
RIP, more reason to win it again.
Just this morning as I was driving to work, I was remembering the 2008 All Star Game at Yankee Stadium and the ovation Georger got and how touched he was as drove and waved around the Stadium.
I am so saddened this morning. My heart felt condolences to the entire Steinbrenner family and the Yankees organization.

For George and Bob
Thoughts and prayers for the Steinbrenner family. RIP, Boss.
RIP George. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Rest in peace, Boss.
Thanks for bringing the Yankees back to glory. Thanks for setting a golden standard. Thanks for everything that, as Yankees fans, makes us proud.
RIP, Boss. Thanks for all the great teams!
Terrible, just terrible. Crushing blow. Knew the day would come, but didn’t think that day would be this soon. Beside myself. You were the best of all time George, nobody did it better.
What a devastating week for the Yankee family. I can proudly say that I’m a Yankee fan because of George Steinbrenner. Rest in peace George.
Also very sad to hear about Bob Sheppard. I knew no other voice of Yankee Stadium then Bob’s and to go to the stadium and not hear him (other then Derek’s intro) seems somehow improper to me. Rest in peace Bob.
Condolences to both families.
IN HONOR OF A MOST BELOVED OWNER, who loved the Yankees legacy and helped them continue their excellence with his business acumen and leadership, you will NEVER be forgotten dear Sir, and thank you for loving the Yankees and preserving their storied history.
You promised NY that you would restore the Yankees back to their grandeur . You put your money where your mouth is, and restored a lasting legacy to your efforts.
Forever you will be tied to, and credited with the success of your beloved Yankees, because of your business model.
Rest in peace Big George! You will be missed!
You’ll be missed George! RIP and thoughts/love to you and the family.
Wonder how long before he fires Billy again … Am sure heaven isnt ready for King George!
Only Steinbrenner could pick such a moment to die, the night of the All-Star game with a whole entire day tomorrow free of sports news to dedicate to his eulogy. Bravo Boss, a fitting end to a man who knew how to grab a headline.
George: Oh, it’s YOU.
Martin: Yeah, George, I got the assignment to welcome you and show you around. And I’ve actually mellowed towards you – even though you fired me a hundred times!
George: But I always rehired you, Billy, I always rehired you!
And just think – no federal estate taxes if you die in 2010
however many years
