The Yankees have the AL’s fourth-worst eighth-inning ERA at 4.86, better than only the Angels (5.74), Orioles (5.11) and the Royals (4.91). That’s in stark contrast that to the numbers recorded by the Rangers (2.59), White Sox (3.00) and Rays (3.38), all potential championship roadblock

“Two players #Yankees would love to have: Dunn, Soria. #Nationals’ price on Dunn exorbitant. #Royals would need to be overwhelmed. #MLB

Anything could happen in the sports business. For example, in the NBA, the Grizzlies did send Pau Gasol to the Los Angeles Red Sox for two apples and an egg shell.
soul – we also have the second(?) best team era in the AL so… 8th inning is cherry picking.
god, the post is basically unreadable lately. that article is a joke.
miami – i believe it was for THREE apples and an egg shell.
The Yankees would love to have Adam Dunn and Joakim Soria, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). But the Yankees’ interest in the two stars doesn’t mean those players will be in pinstripes any time soon. After all, many teams would love to have them both and the Nationals and Royals would demand a lot in any deal.
From MLB Traderumors
YankeesWFAN Girardi said ARod was healthy at ASG. Needed him to take Beltre’s place in the field, so couldn’t use him for Papi or Buck.

Bill-
I agree that Lee wasn’t a need this year. While he would have made the rotation historically good and probably made the Yankees the clearcut favorite to repeat ( if they aren’t already) but I’m glad they didn’t give up Montero and others. Keep the system loaded for a big trade in the future that could really fix a gaping hole on the team via injuries etc.
I just don’t think Soria is worth a top prospect. For all we know, Abaladejo or a guy like Nova could end up doing the same thing

Irreverent-
Romine can catch. There is no debate that he will stay at catcher in the bigs. He does need to improve on certain things but he will stick at catcher, making his .280 20 homer projection extremely valuable. Unless you are calling Montero the “2nd catcher” then that’s a different story.
I would give up a second tier guy like Nunez, Adams, or Mcallister for Soria. Nothing more. Guys from the minors have been known to be able to come up and plug gaps in the bullpen (like Robertson last year).
Yanks need help in the pen. I expect Cashman to make a move.
Yanks have enough hitting.
GMS patch looks better than I suspected it would.

I hope the Yanks don’t get Adam Dunn. I’ve just never liked him. I’d rather have guy with a little less pop in the bat who can hit 20 hr and hit around .280 with a little speed and can field his position.
All my friends from Cincy hated him when he was on the Reds too. Just never cared for his style of play…
tyler i responded on the last thread, i’m out for the day
I’d think really hard and probably reluctantly trade away Romine as the centerpiece of a deal for Soria if I were Cashman.
However, and this cannot be overlooked, what makes people think Soria would even want to be traded to the Yankees and demoted to the 8th inning?
He’s an elite closer. I wouldn’t want to be demoted in the prime of my career to fill that role with the Yankees and hope Mo retires soon so I could replace the guy who is irreplaceable.
I’ve always found it to be a dumb idea to find Mo’s replacement when Mo has shown no signs of slowing down and may continue to pitch for another few years.
I don’t imagine Soria would be a happy camper and I can’t say I would blame him. No elite closer is going to like the idea of being demoted in the prime of his career along with the uncertainty of Mo’s retirement.
It’s all fun and games to say that the Yanks would love to have Soria. Sure, they would. But the reality of such a move is pure fantasy.
Irreverent-
I saw. I see your points but I respectfully disagree of course. I was going more on the mental psyche of the closer. Even Mo has had trouble recently coming into tie games or when the team is behind. The closer is wired to protect that 3 run or less lead in the 9th to get the final 3 outs. When they come into a blowout, tie game, or in the 8th sometimes they are just out of whack and lose focus for whatever reason. I like Soria alot but it’s debatable in my mind if he’s a top 5 closer in the game. Plus, closers vary so much (besides Mo) year to year. Just 2 years ago Papelbon was a top 3 closer in the game. Now he will probably be phased out for Bard soon. I don’t want to give up Romine or montero for that.
Soria was a rule 5 pick anyway. you can find guys like him and plug them into the pen and find success. building a bullpen is alot about finding gems not just big name guys. the yanks actually have the best in this department in Kevin Towers working for them. His Padres bullpen he built has been lights out especially this year.
