Old-Timers’ Day

Posted by: Josh Thomson - Posted in Misc on Jul 17, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees just opened today’s festivities with a tribute video to Bob Sheppard. The video included snippets of former players talking about Sheppard, but mixed in were sound clips of Sheppard introducing batters, from the No. 1 hole to the No. 9 hole. Good stuff.

If you’re unable to watch live, I’ll provide some updates and a list of those attending today.

The roll call of the players ended with Michael Kay informing the crowd that Yogi Berra had a fall in his house and will miss the ceremony. Berra received a big get-well cheer from the crowd.

Kay and John Sterling just introduced the widows of Billy Martin, Elston Howard, Thurman Munson, Bobby Murcer and Sheppard.

The ceremony is complete. The game is about to begin.

I’m working on the pregame notes and will post them in a bit.

They should have an Old Timer’s fan Day. I could qualify for that. :)

“Marte to DL with left shoulder inflammation”

    —————————-

Bad news for the BP. I wanted to see him get a shot at the eighth as he has been their 2nd best reliever.

Just hope to get him back strong for the stretch run and the playoffs to shut down the big LHB.

  3. Jaba Tips his Cap July 17th, 2010 at 2:16 pm

Small was just amazing in that year

  4. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Small’s brief Yankee career exemplifies why you don’t overpay for a reliever. You never know what you are going to get and for how long.

  5. yankee todd July 17th, 2010 at 2:18 pm

since when is homer bush and pat kelly yankees we bring back to honor? Who’s next andy stankowitz?

  6. whatever July 17th, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Cashmen better get us SORIA.. this is ridicilous

  7. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) July 17th, 2010 at 2:18 pm

We won the WS with him and we wouldn’t have without, so you can’t rip the trade too much, but Marte has been a disappointment overall – and thanks to his stupid weight lifting routine a couple of years ago, his shoulder is not exactly sound. I can’t imagine him coming back in 2 weeks and everything being hunky dory; this is a killer for the pen. Cash needs to do something about it.

  8. XLJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Marte barely pitches and he still gets hurt. The guy has only pitched 17 innings so far this season.

  9. MTU (aka GBURL) July 17th, 2010 at 2:19 pm

    LGY-

The BP Needs some serious attention.

Tryouts for the next 2 weeks and if no one steps up it’s “Let’s make a deal”.

Did you see where SJ hinted at the possibility of Mo having indicated to the Yankees that he might retire after this season ?

I believe it was pure spec on SJ’s part but if there is any truth at all to it we should acquire Soria now while he might be available.

  10. yankee todd July 17th, 2010 at 2:19 pm

    Or my favorite sal fasano?

  11. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) July 17th, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Rich, I wouldn’t overpay either, but the Yankees either shore up their pen or they don’t make the playoffs or they go home early in the playoffs.

  12. whatever July 17th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

homer bush is annoying, he doesn’t deserve to be here.. he had like 5 stolen bases with the Yankees JUGGARNAUT that won 110 more games without him and they make it sound like he was rickey.. enough already.

  13. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:20 pm

Hector Lopez looks great for 81.

  14. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

Who are they going to get and how much will it cost?

Hughes may be in the pen in the playoffs.

  15. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:22 pm

No one deserves more credit for the dynasty than Stick.

  16. GreenBeret7 July 17th, 2010 at 2:22 pm

Montero is going nowhere in any trade. (kiss of death)

I wonder who the Yankees are trading him for.

“•In a video on ESPN, Olney says the Yankees have determined that they would not trade catching prospect Jesus Montero for any player available on the trade market. They were willing to move him for Cliff Lee because it was a special case.”

  17. raymagnetic July 17th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

“but the Yankees either shore up their pen or they don’t make the playoffs ”

The Yankees have the BEST record in the league. They have the BEST record in the league. They have the BEST record in the league. They have the BEST record in the league.

    ———

I agree talk about a guy being overhyped. The guy was 6 for 9 in stolen bases as a yankee in the regular season. Even Kay hypes him up all the time. They are making it seem like he was some great bench player and without him they wouldn’t have won in 98.

  20. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) July 17th, 2010 at 2:24 pm

Yeah, I thought about my poor verb tense after I re-read my post. My bad.

  28. Phil the Thrill July 17th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

    Roy White was terribly underrated.

  29. Rage July 17th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Marte is basically like Aceves – has a chronic condition and has to be monitored. Remember, even in late 2008 after we acquired him, he complained about shoulder stiffness and asked for some time off (we were basically out of it anyway then, so it didn’t matter). So it has been a problem with him since we got him.

That is probably why Girardi rarely uses him and Cash said he was a lefty specialist in ST… because they don’t think he can handle consistent work.

  30. Jeremy July 17th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

    I love seeing these games.

  31. Jaba Tips his Cap July 17th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

  32. GreenBeret7 July 17th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

People deride Horace Clarke, but he was one of the best fielding 2nd basemen in baseball as well as being a fine base stealer hand he got his hits and scored his runs on bad teams.

  33. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

I wish Cone had been a Yankee for his entire career, and I wish he was back in the YES booth.

    Coney!

Too bad he isn’t still in the YES booth… by far their best broadcaster…

  35. Everyone sucks except SJ and CB and Doreen July 17th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

You guys realize what they are doing with the pen, right?

They’re showing off Albie as a potential piece to a trade for someone like Soria. They’re giving Logan a shot at showing something so they could potentially move him as a piece. They’re giving Mitre enough time to be healthy so he can go the rest of the year. They’re not going to rush Sanchez or Nova, and use them when they are good and ready.

As much as you may think the BP is issue number one, apparently to the people in the know (the yankees brass) it’s not. They win far more than they lose. There is no need to rush and make stupid trades or stupid moves. The BP is adequate and will be better by the end of July.

    Patience.

  36. LGY - Free Dejo! July 17th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Mo and Marte carried the BP last postseason. They have the best record in baseball with a terrible/injured BP outside of Mo.

It is a “problem” but it is FAR from something that will prevent them from making the playoffs or advancing. Every team has BP problems because most relievers stink.

As long as they have Mo, they will always have a major advantage come playoff time.

  37. GreenBeret7 July 17th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Nobody but his team mates and a few fans that knew what they saw appreciated the things thay Roy White could do on the field.

  38. JJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

“People deride Horace Clarke, but he was one of the best fielding 2nd basemen in baseball as well as being a fine base stealer hand he got his hits and scored his runs on bad teams.”

Yes, but he has his own “era” named after him.

  39. seven July 17th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

The yanks just need to add a middle reliever in the bullpen to replace Park. I dont think they need someone as good as Soria. They just need reliable arm like Aceves was.

Vazquez is pitching great so you can move Hughes in the bullpen for the postseason. Robertson has been pitching better and hopefully Joba can get on a roll in the 2nd half.

  40. GreenBeret7 July 17th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Ralph Terry was a marvelous pitcher that was crucified for Stengel’s screw-up.

  41. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

“They’re showing off Albie as a potential piece to a trade for someone like Soria”

And you think everyone else sucks? Alby is a fungible reliever who hasn’t been able to stick in the MLs despite being almost 28. He’s not worth very much as a piece in any deal.

  42. Tar July 17th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

“No one deserves more credit for the dynasty than Stick.”

    +1

“They win far more than they lose. There is no need to rush and make stupid trades or stupid moves. The BP is adequate and will be better by the end of July.

    Patience.”

    +1

Logan gets the call because he’s lefty. He’s done a very good job in Scranton, so it’s well deserved.

  43. LGY - Free Dejo! July 17th, 2010 at 2:32 pm

“They’re showing off Albie as a potential piece to a trade for someone like Soria.”

    ——————————–

Yeah…ummm. That is not at all what they are doing, considering Dejo has like zero trade value.

  44. Banks July 17th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

If the Yankees plan on having Hughes in the pen in the postseason anyway, then all this worrying is moot.

We can win 100 games in the regular season with this current pen. If they know Hughes is headed there for the postseason, then Cash doesn’t have to overpay for some mediocre reliever. And yes, mediocre relievers are the only one realistically available unless you want to give up Montero or such.

  45. GreenBeret7 July 17th, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Moose. What an outstanding power hitter.

  46. Bret the Hitman July 17th, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Jesus Montero seems to have adjusted to a higher level of play – but that doesn’t mean he can come up and rake and be the RH bat we need without suffering from a similar if not longer adjustment period to the next and highest level of baseball.

I think Wigginton could be the guy. The Yankees will skimp on the bat and go full-in on the bullpen.

The non-call of Alby is telling.

Internal solutions might not be enough to fix our achilles heal.

Robertson is a nice reliever to have if he’s right, but he’s still young and volatile.

The better he performs, the less likely it is that the Yankees overpay for a reliever.

However, as SJ44 noted, if Mo wants to retire and has informed the Yankees of that intention then Soria must be a prime target.

I’d offer Eduardo Nunez + Joba Chamberlain + David Adams.

I think that package is tough for other GM’s to beat as Nunez plays a position of need and is one of the top shortstop prospects in baseball while Adams is another potential starting middle infielder and those are scarce. Joba has potential to start and could benefit from a change of scenery where he starts from scratch and realizes his mortality and responsibility.

If anyone out there thinks a GM can top that package for Soria, I’d like to hear who the GM is and what he’d offer.

Is there a link to watch this ?????

  48. GreenBeret7 July 17th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

    Puff!!!!

    Where did he go?

  49. HT July 17th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

    Albie is trade bait?

I would bet there are dozens and dozens of pitchers who have put up numbers similar to him in the minors. See: Edwar.

He has no value. Who would give up anything of value for a 27 yr old reliever in AAA?

  50. Phil the Thrill July 17th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

When White and Murcer were playing a the old YS it was both a pitchers’ park and a pitchers’ era.

  51. Jimmy July 17th, 2010 at 2:37 pm

They are showcasing Boone Logan? The same Logan who has a 1.75 WHIP this year and a 5.55 career ERA with 3 teams? And who in the world wants Albaladejo in a trade?

If that is indeed Cashman’s thinking, it wouldn’t speak very highly of him.

  52. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:38 pm

I can’t believe that I allowed my uncle to persuade me to go with him to a Knick game the night Reggie hit 3 HRs.

  54. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:39 pm

Plus You Tube should have some of it up later as well, Pat.

  55. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

These guys are the really old Old Timers.

  56. Clark July 17th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

    Brett –

If Joba+ could fetch Soria, it would be done by now.

Joba’s star has dimmed. He is a 6 ERA relief pitcher now.

  57. seven July 17th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

Bullpens are funny Hughes was dominant in the regular season last year getting compared to 96 version of Rivera. Than was awful in the playoff and lost his job. Joba struggled badly in august and september and pitched well in the postseason he had a 2.84 era. And Marte who was being called a bust was lights out in the world series.

The worst thing the yanks can do is panic and overpay for a reliever.

  58. MTU (aka GBURL) July 17th, 2010 at 2:43 pm

Maybe it IS the Yankee Brass’s calculation that the team can get to the PS as presently constructed.

But for my money, I don’t like the Yankee’s collective azzes hanging out in the wind with a lousy BP not named Mo.

If we can fix it from within great but I say we fix it- one way or another.

I’m greedy and I don’t like taking any chances with an obvious point of vulnerability.

    That’s my take FWIW.

P.S. I am convinced that Cash can identify and make a deal for a reasonably good reliever (Example, Leo Nunez of the Marlins).

  59. seven July 17th, 2010 at 2:44 pm

The royals are going to ask for romine or montero to be included for Soria. The royals have been very hesitant to trade Soria. The yanks are not going to get one of the better closers in the game without giving up one of there top prospects.

  60. Icebird753 July 17th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

This makes me think, the Old Timers were supposed to break down barriers and the younger generations should learn to capitalize. But MLB has not done a great job with, how else do I put it, “blackinizing itself”. What a shame, ’cause I’m sure we’d see a much better game being played out there if more African Americans chose to play baseball.

  61. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

“The yanks are not going to get one of the better closers in the game without giving up one of there top prospects.”

I agree, which is why I would pass.

  62. SJ44 July 17th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

    Pat M,

At OTD and the George stories today are just priceless!

Tough day for everybody though. Especially with Yogi not here.

    Bret,

The only way the Yankees would entertain a Soria trade is if Mo gave them a heads up on their plans. I have NO idea if such a conversation has taken place.

They aren’t trading 3 big pieces for a setup guy. Especially a reluctant one.

Those are panicked fan trades. Those aren’t intelligent baseball trades.

  63. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) July 17th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Joba did not pitch well in the post-season; he just pitched better than Phil, who was awful.

LGY, I don’t agree………..this is a very tough division and it’s going to be a dogfight. I think they could easily blow enough games in the late innings to make a difference. I’m not saying it will happen but it could.

Let’s not put Phil in the pen yet. What happens if he’s pitching lights out? Are the Yankees going to put one of their best starters in the pen?

  64. GreenBeret7 July 17th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

I hate to tell Michael Kay this, but, Ron Guidry is the #3 Yankee strikeout leader behind Whitey Ford and Andy Pettitte.

“Let’s not put Phil in the pen yet. What happens if he’s pitching lights out? Are the Yankees going to put one of their best starters in the pen?”

You can’t use five starters in the playoffs. Since all can be lights out at times, it’s unavoidable that a starter not named CC or Andy will be in the pen.

  67. GreenBeret7 July 17th, 2010 at 2:48 pm

Billy was a drunk most of the time, but, he married well.

  68. LA Dave July 17th, 2010 at 2:48 pm

There won’t be as many off-days this postseason either. Which means Rivera can’t be used as liberally for multiple innings as he was last year. We need someone else alongside him to help him. Of course, it is no guarantee as we saw last year with Hughes in the postseason who actually cost us games rather than hold leads, but it is nice to have that insurance.

  69. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:49 pm

So did Bobby Murcer. His wife is still good looking.

  73. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) July 17th, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Rich, I was referring specifically to Phil……..that said, assuming he’s not lights out is the safe bet and I do expect him to be put in the pen (but I won’t assume he’s the savior).

  74. Keith--FL July 17th, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Bret the Hitman….I agree with you on the package for Soria…the Royals could get 2 position players in Nunez and Adams plus a potential starting pitcher in Joba who has roots close to KC in Nebraska……why the Royals want to hang on to a great closer when they stink is beyond me…and if Soria can’t see the value in being the 8th inning guy for the greatest closer in the history of baseball and learning from MO and pitching in the playoffs and maybe even taking Mo’s place one day then he likes being a pressure free closer in KC and should stay there b/c first time he gives up the lead in the 8th inning the spotlight will shine like it never has in KC……we have to give up quality to get quality so this would be a good trade for both teams…….. Also would like to see us get Scott Downs from the Blue Jays, a good lefty reliever.

  75. teddy3321 July 17th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

i though cecil fielder would be there

  76. Torro July 17th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

“Let’s not put Phil in the pen yet. What happens if he’s pitching lights out? Are the Yankees going to put one of their best starters in the pen?”

One starter has to be the odd-man out anyway.

Hughes is the only guy who has late inning relief experience. And thats our only weakness is. Javy or Burnett would be long men if they were in the pen and wouldn’t help us there at all. It is all about maximizing resources.

  77. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

    Betsy

They don’t need a savior. They just need another quality arm to compliment Mo.

    ——————–

Hughes knows how to pitch out of the bullpen as a short reliever and be effective. If you are going to put someone like Vazquez in the bullpen they are basically going to be useless in the bullpen. Hughes can help the team more pitching in the later innnings in the postseason.

  79. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:53 pm

” Javy or Burnett would be long men if they were in the pen and wouldn’t help us there at all. It is all about maximizing resources.”

I disagree. Quality arms like AJ and Javy could easily pitch the 7th and/or 8th.

  80. GreenBeret7 July 17th, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Kay Murcer looks as good now as she did back in the 1970s when I met them both down in Arlington at a Denny’s Restaurant. Still quite the beauty.

  81. Rich in NJ July 17th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

“If you are going to put someone like Vazquez in the bullpen they are basically going to be useless in the bullpen. Hughes can help the team more pitching in the later innnings in the postseason.”

As I said, not true. The reason that most relievers are so unpredictable is that most are second-rate arms. Javy and AJ aren’t. They could flourish in the pen.

  82. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) July 17th, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Rich, my point was that after last year, you can’t even assume that Phil will be good in the pen. He could be just as bad as he was last year, he could be worse, he could be ok, he could be great……….

Torro, if it should happen that Phil is pitching lights out and better than Javy, then you go with Phil. You have to go with the better starter……….who has the best chance to take you to Mo without too many relievers getting in the way.

  85. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) July 17th, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Seven, IF it happens that Phil is pitching lights out – I completely disagree. He can help the team as a starter by taking the ball and getting it to Mo – a starter effects the game a lot more than a reliever. If the starter gets racked around, what use is Phil in the 8th? Or even Mo? That said, I don’t expect Phil to be pitching THAT much better than Javy by the time post-season rolls around (if we make it and if he’s pitching better at all), so I would expect Phil in the pen. Either way, the only guys I really trust in the rotation are CC and Andy.

“I disagree. Quality arms like AJ and Javy could easily pitch the 7th and/or 8th.”

But we won’t know that unless they give them a few games there to get acclimated to it.

AJ, with his inconsistent mechanics and all, could be another Joba there. He is a 2-pitch pitcher anyway, so going to the pen won’t help him in that regard.

Pat, thanks for the info. Sigh – I hope he’s ok; that’s scary..

Whose to say it is Vazquez who is the odd-man out? It may very well be Burnett if he is on his bad streak.

In that case, I don’t see how he helps us in the pen with how inconsistent his mechanics are. Last thing we need out of the pen is for him to not be able to find the plate.

My point is that most relievers that they could acquire at a reasonable price would be unpredictable as well.

He may not be. The point is that one of the five will be and it won’t be CC or Andy.

I can’t stand the tears any more. :(

I feel like time is slipping through our fingers.

I remember one OTD, after Whitey Ford was introduced, a truck drove up behind him and they unloaded a giant 6 foot roll of Lifesavers. They slipped the paper cylinder off and there was Luis Arroyo.

Mantle was behind that. He always told Ford that it wasn’t for Arroyo, Ford would have been a 20 game loser in 1961 because Arroyo was his lifesaver.

Vazquez could be very interesting out of the pen… we know he has plus breaking stuff. He will pick up a couple ticks of his FB in the pen too, and we know he throws strikes.

So Marte is hurt. That’s unfortunate and you have to wonder what is up with him. He’s very fragile. Any word on who is replacement is? Are there any lefties???

Whitey Ford looks fantastic. His eyes, his face, look so youthful. He looks like he’s spent a very contented life.

Billy was a drunk most of the time, but, he married well.

I’ve got more wit drunk than you do sober.

Joey Pep has enlarged his silhouette a little. I assume that he’s wearing his gamer today.

homer bush is annoying, he doesn’t deserve to be here.. he had like 5 stolen bases with the Yankees JUGGARNAUT that won 110 more games without him and they make it sound like he was rickey.. enough already.

You don’t deserve to be on here idiot, but you’re here !

They not only bring back stars, but many who were Yankees only a short time. Who are you to decide ?

They don’t need a savior. They just need another quality arm to compliment Mo.

Mo doesn’t need compliments. He knows his worth and doesn’t bow to flattery.

But he could use a good setup man to get the ball to him.

My favorite pitcher of all time ! Check out his highest ERA for one year !

  103. 57' Yank July 17th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Yanks don’t need a closer, just a set-up guy and maybe one more reliever. And a DH !

I hope I never see the day, that posters here start knocking Mo, like they have Jeter !

    Would be equally wrong !!!
