BREAKING NEWS: Pettitte out 4-5 weeks; Mitre to start Saturday
According to Brian Cashman via Chad Jennings, Andy Pettitte will be placed on the DL and could be out for 4-5 weeks. He will be replaced in the starting rotation by Sergio Mitre on Saturday at home against Kansas City.
The Yankees said in today’s postgame that they would wait and see how Pettitte felt in a couple days. Obviously, they weren’t willing to wait that long.
Pettitte left today’s 9-5 victory over the Rays with a Grade 1 strain in his left groin. He felt discomfort on a 2-and-0 pitch to Kelly Shoppach with one out in the third inning and was removed after the pain sharpened on his first warmup pitch.
Pettitte said he suffered a similar injury in 2001 but could not remember much about it or compare this injury to that one.
Stay tuned. I’ll have postgame notes shortly.

4-5 weeks for a grade 1 strain? Geez…………
Great, so Mitre in the rotation for that long? Just when we thought we were getting our long man back…………
I hope/think Cashman’s just being conservative here.
How on earth can Mitre be ready to go more than 4 innings? This is just going to kill the pen even more than it already has been
They just refuse to give Nova or any of the kids a chance…….
Wow. Looks like the attempted trade for Cliff Lee would have not been over kill as many suggested. Think they need to do something now after this. Burnett is a wild card so Yanks are down to only three starters
It sounds like they are putting Andy on the El Duque vacation plan.
4-5 weeks ?? Geesh. Cant be a Grade 1 then. Something isnt jiving here.
Bad news for Pettitte and the Yanks, but I think Mitre will do fine as the fill-in. His first start or two might be tough b/c of pitch counts, but now that he’s fully recovered from TJ surgery, he’s basically Wang with a better slider. More than adequate as a #5.
On another note, I think this situation might be a boon for AJ Burnett. As we saw last year, Burnett pitched his best games when he was truly counted on to win: the Yanks’ first legitimate win against the Sox, when he matched zeros with Lester for 7.2 (no-hit, after the first batter of the game) innings, and game 2 of the WS after CC lost game 1 being the best examples.
Finally, great win today (just finished watching the re-run online). It seems the Yankees finally noticed what I’ve observed about David Price all year, which is that he over-relies on his fastball. Of course it helped that he had no command of his slider today, but still, he does trend toward the predictable, and the Yankees took advantage.
