Tonight’s Angels starter was supposed to be Scott Kazmir, but he went on the disabled list with fatigue in his shoulder. The Angels are most likely going to start either Trevor Bell or Sean O’Sullivan, each of whom has been starting in Triple-A but worked only out of the bullpen in the big leagues this season.

One other bit of Angels news: They just activated shortstop Maicer Izturis from the DL and designated Paul McAnulty. Izturis hasn’t played since June 15.

I would love for Laird (and Eduardo Nunez) to get some work in the outfield.

On another note, I was watching some games last night and saw a guy who would be an almost perfect addition to the Yankees, unfortunately his team is in the thick of a playoff push; Andruw Jones. Right handed power, can DH and play a little OF as well.

  2. Bret the Hitman July 20th, 2010 at 9:00 am

The Texas Rangers are ready to end the Angels run of dominance in the AL West.

  3. Bret the Hitman July 20th, 2010 at 9:01 am

    Chip,

But do you think the White Sox would help a contender unless they get something of immediate help in return?

  4. MTU July 20th, 2010 at 9:05 am

    Bret-

It’s easy to dominate a division when your competition continually sucks.

Now that the Angels have to face real competition they went out like a match in the wind.

Nice to see Sciosca squirm. I never liked the guy.

I?m not saying that?s what I want, just that it is a possibility.

I would like to see him reach his potential with the Yankees.

Good job on figuring out my acronym.

    Bret,

Nope, which is why I said that it’s unfortunate that the White Sox are in the thick of the playoff push

    Registration what?

  9. BetterLivingThruChemistry July 20th, 2010 at 9:14 am

While the Angels haven’t had great competition I still think they are a solid team.

This year they have downgraded some.

I’ve never really like Sciocia either, but that might be bias speaking.

  10. rbj01 July 20th, 2010 at 9:15 am

    Just testing the new registration.

    Maine-

I knew what you were driving at.

He has talent. Who wouldn’t want that to realized with the Yanks.

It’s other things holding him back. Time grows short for him. Patience wears thin especially Yankee patience. He’s high maintenance on a team that doesn’t really specialize in garage repairs.

But I am loyal to the point of a fault sometimes, and I am an unbridled optimist. And I don’t believe in kicking people when they down. So I continue to hope for the best against the odds. I think the Halladay treatment could have shocked him into reality, and he
needs to dedicate himself to superb conditioning this off season.

That will be his last chance IMO.

I would love to see the Rangers win the west this year, well actually I really was pulling for Seattle, but I wouldn’t count the Angels out yet. They are not far enough back.

Can’t see anyone catching the Rangers. Now that they have Lee, their rotation got a huge boost, and with that offense, their pitchers get plenty of support

  19. MTU July 20th, 2010 at 9:24 am

  24. jowhite July 20th, 2010 at 9:27 am

Important start for Vazquez. A dominant outing would be nice. All hands on deck for the rotation through the next couple turns. Hughes, I have complete faith in.

  25. Bret the Hitman July 20th, 2010 at 9:28 am

  41. Chip July 20th, 2010 at 9:42 am

From what I heard yesterday on MLB Radio it sounds like the Yankees are waiting to see if the price drops on Leo Nunez and Cody Ross.

The problem that they (and other teams) are finding is that while the Yankees view Ross as a part time player and Nunez as a set-up guy the Marlins view them as a starting OF and closer respectively and are asking for a lot in return as a result.

If the Marlins are asking the moon for their closer I’d rather some other GM overpay while we exchange a top prospect or package for Joakim Soria. If you’re going to pay big, you might as well get the best of the best.

Umm.. no. My mom died 8 years ago. But she wasn’t a word person. In fact, when her and my dad were dating way back when, they once broke up over a kids Jumble puzzle.

The letters were “YTS” and she had to stop and think about it. So my dad asked her if she was a moron. From my understanding it got really ugly.

The only way the Yanks go for Soria is like SJ said before IF Mo had given the Yanks a “heads up” that he was going to hang ‘em up at the end of the season.

I also think that if the Yankees go out and trade for a setup guy that Joba’s free ride in the majors is over and he’ll be riding the busses in Scranton for the majority of the remainder of the season.

  58. stuart July 20th, 2010 at 10:00 am

what is the story on registration???

  59. LGY - Free Dejo! July 20th, 2010 at 10:03 am

Something potentially very interesting could happen with Joba down the stretch.

A lot of people assume that Hughes will shift to the bullpen for the stretch run and the playoffs to limit his innings. This is not a forgone conclusion, but very possible.

Robertson right now is stepping up his game and looks like he may take a stranglehold on the 8th inning.

So, if Robertson becomes the main setup guy for now, eventually Hughes shifts to the bullpen, and Marte comes back as the LOOGY, where does that leave Joba in terms of his role in the BP for the stretch run and playoffs?

  60. upstate kate July 20th, 2010 at 10:03 am

    Bret-

Do you follow the minors at all ?

Corban Joseph has been taering it up, and he is a 2nd baseman I believe.

My point is that, as good as Adams appears to be, he is very expendable.

In a trade he would be a perfect piece to include.

Cash has lot’s of good chips to use in trade the real questions are when is he going to use them, and for whom ? :)

  66. MTU July 20th, 2010 at 10:10 am

    Kate-

Someone said the other day that D-Rob has made a mechanical adjustment to his delivery.

If that is true, it seems to have worked so far.

It would be a godsend if he can fill our EIG role but I am not totally convinced of that yet.

Still some time to find out though. :)

  67. CountryClub July 20th, 2010 at 10:11 am

It’s true that Adams is expendable. But it’s more because of Cano than Joseph. Joseph has a solid bat, but he’s not good in the field.

  68. Trevor July 20th, 2010 at 10:11 am

    Tom-
The blog is starting Registration for all posters starting at noon today.

  70. Bret the Hitman July 20th, 2010 at 10:13 am

    MTU,

Outside of Montero, Romine, Brackman and Betances, I believe the Yankees are loaded with more than enough prospects to pull off a blockbuster.

Like I said days ago, I bet a package of Eduardo Nunez + Joba Chamberlain + David Adams for Joakim Soria would be tough to beat.

SJ44 thinks it’s a panic trade which obviously thinks it’s too much.

Others will argue it’s not enough, of course.

I’ll maintain that it’s fair and balanced.

But the big question is how the Royals and other GM’s evaluate the Yankees system outside the gems that we hear about all the time as common fans.

I think it’s fascinating to imagine that some GM’s are lurking out there for talent like Brandon Laird and David Phelps.

I wonder what those GM’s would be willing to trade for guys like that.

  71. MTU July 20th, 2010 at 10:13 am

    CC-

I agree but it doesn’t hurt to have Joseph behind him either. He can hit and his fielding might improve.

Registration is coming to Lohud at noon today. Its the dawn of a new era!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, if Robertson becomes the main setup guy for now, eventually Hughes shifts to the bullpen, and Marte comes back as the LOOGY, where does that leave Joba in terms of his role in the BP for the stretch run and playoffs?

    Possibly off the roster.

As I was just saying, if the Yankees add another pen arm at the deadline I could see them shifting Joba to AAA rather than using him as a mop up guy.

Now the added intrigue becomes, what happens with Joba at AAA; do the Yankees keep him in the pen or let him work as a starter for the remainder of the season? If the Yankees added Leo Nunez or Joakim Soria (for argument’s sake) well then that pitcher will be around next year and possibly a few years after as the primary set up guy and possibly Mo’s replacement right – so if Joba’s not a starter then what is he? A middle reliever?

Obviously there’s a lot of dealing that has to happen for any of this to be relevant, but it’s fun to play “what if”

“Like I said days ago, I bet a package of Eduardo Nunez + Joba Chamberlain + David Adams for Joakim Soria would be tough to beat.”

    ———————————-

    Bret,

Without diving into the point at all of comparing packages of what other teams put together, the problem is that Soria is not technically on the block.

The Royals don’t have much incentive to trade him. It is not about putting together the best package.

It is about overwhelming them enough to the point where they say, oh yeah we will trade Soria for that.

While, I walk past a store window and see a banana hammock or apparently a bananagram in a female’s case for only $5 and that is a good deal, I just don’t need a new one ;)

If it is only $1 though, maybe that is a different story :)

bananagrams is a portable version of scrabble. Instead of playing on a board, everyone makes their own cross word w/ their own tiles. There are no points, you just try to use all your tiles first. It is much quicker moving than scrabble, which is probaly why I like it. The tiles are stored in a banana pouch (not at all related to a banana hammock, LGY)

Joba Chamberlain could be one of the players dealt for Soria or Nunez. If he’s not, then your speculation is interesting. I suspect there’s a possibility that they pitch Joba in 2-3 inning stints, late inning ala Mark Melancon.

  84. MTU July 20th, 2010 at 10:21 am

    Bret-

And one more thing. I think the Yanks like to trade from surplus.

Nunez and Laird may not be seen as expendable as they may be emergency insurance for Jetes and Alex.

Our surpluses are at 1b, 2nd, catcher, and arms IMO.

Just a thought if you want to play prentend GM. :)

No question that Chamberlain’s stock has fallen. No longer a “go to guy” with the game on the line.
He may not be sent to AAA but he has no defined role at the present time. This could be the calm before the storm when Cashman deals him and others for a piece needed for the pennant push.

  88. Bret the Hitman July 20th, 2010 at 10:25 am

    LGY,

I believe that the Royals will trade Soria at the deadline and that some team will overwhelm them. When they don’t publicly declare him available or suggest that he’s not on the block, they’re just hedging against low-ball offers. That’s all they got for DeJesus. I don’t think their style is to declare an official fire-sale like Kenny Williams did earlier with the White Sox. I think their fans are numbed to fire sales and are tired of hearing about it and are sensitive to it. The bottom line remains, Soria is an unnecessary luxury on a bad team.

  89. sab July 20th, 2010 at 10:25 am

anyone see the end of the marlins/rockies game last night? pie was served. and who did the pie serving you ask?

None other than Cody Ross. Yup that same Cody Ross that is mentioned in trade rumors. Do the yankees have their back up pie server waiting in the wings in case AJ can’t do it anymore?

bananagrams is a portable version of scrabble.

Scrabble would be much quicker if my dad didn’t waste my time with words like “UNWIPED”

LGY is dead on with the Soria stuff.

The Royals have absolutely no incentive to trade him. They have to be overwhelmed.

It’s not like Soria is a FA at the end of the season and they know they are going to lose him.

A package of Joba, Adams, and Nunez isn’t likely to overwhelm the Royals enough to trade their elite closer who is very cost controlled.

That’s a very big wrinkle in the fantasy trade scenario some have for Soria.

  93. RossGB July 20th, 2010 at 10:29 am

Yankees will trade for a Joakim Soria.

    (Real name: Kyle Farnsworth)

  95. MTU July 20th, 2010 at 10:30 am

    GF-

I’d go a step further. I don’t think the Yankees want to trade Nunez at all.

The interesting thing is that the Yankees could IMO put together a package that would probably overwhelm KC, and I don’t even think it would have to include Nunez, Romine, or Montero.

But I just don’t think they are likely to do it. :)

  96. color me nervous July 20th, 2010 at 10:31 am

Please ……… no Joba consideration as a starter. If he can’t come in from the bullpen and handle an inning or two of hitters, he can’t be depended on to handle the 2nd time around of a lineup by nibbling at the corners and shaking off his catcher.
He showed his worth as a starter in 2009 and it backfired.

  97. The Phranchise July 20th, 2010 at 10:34 am

I would love Soria and is the perfect fit for this bullpen now and in the future. I doubt they ever would, but is it worth a big gamble for Soria and pickup either Dejesus or take a chance on Gordon for the bench? It would take a lot, but seems like any move this year will take a lot. Would rather see them go big time for a guy like Soria.

Having said that I think Nova will be in the bullpen this year, Humolo and Abby will be given a shot, I think someone from the minors will provide a boost this year. And count on the Yankees getting a veteran starter and Hughes in the pen by the end of the season and in the playoffs. With his innings limit it makes sense. Also makes sense in the playoffs with AJ definitely starting games that you need a solid bullpen shutdown if he doesn’t last long. Four innings of at least Hughes, Joba, Mo and Robertson is pretty decent with Mitre healthy and maybe another arm down there.

I think we’re more down on Joba than the rest of baseball, far more down on him. It’s tough for us to be objective about him because we’ve seen 2007 and now. It’s hard not to be angry.

At the start of the year, would anyone here have traded Joba Chamberlain, straight up, for a closer?

I agree with Bret’s statement yesterday that Cashman’s statement that bench help is his first priority is Cashman’s way of saying he will not get ripped off for unreliable bullpen help. He must look at this team and see that is the most significant weak point.

However, I have recently seen a number of teams that have bullpen help as their priority including the Red Sox, the Tigers, the Dodgers. The list goes on. I doubt they can obtain one without overpaying, and that holds true even for the grade B relievers.

You were the exception thought and I remember you advocating the Yankees trading him if they planned to put him in the bullpen at any time.

Most Yankees fans realized that since he has potential as a starter (remember, he competed with Hughes for the 5th starter role) he’s worth more than a closer.

Nobody would have traded Joba Chamberlain, straight up for a closer, any closer, at the start of the season.

I wouldn’t trade him for any closer. Any dumb team can make a reliever a closer. But I’d trade him for Joakim Soria. Even as a ‘starter prospect’ I wanted the yankees to trade him+ for a more established guy, like Josh Johnson before this season.

  118. Wave Your Hat July 20th, 2010 at 10:46 am

I made a number of comments suggesting that the loser of the Joba-Phil starter competition be traded for an OF like Choo, Cruz or others. I even said I’d think about adding Montero if necessary to get a guy like Cruz.

    Who But?

  123. Bret the Hitman July 20th, 2010 at 10:49 am

    Jerkface,

Fans viewed Joba Chamberlain as more valuable than any closer in baseball at the start of the year. Nobody would have traded him straight up for Soria or any other closer. That was a mere 4 months ago.

Now many think that he’s nothing more than a throw in.

My point is that our evaluation of his trade market value likely misses his true value because we are angry and have lost a bit of objectivity in evaluating him.

We have a right to be angry, but I suspect GM’s around baseball still value him more like most of us did in spring training 2010.

A hard thrower is only as good as he can locate his 95 + MPH fastball and have command of the strike zone with good use of his secondary pitches. Case in point : Joba Chamberlain.

There are some interesting names out there to be traded for, but I would like to see Montero be used as a DH if he stays hot for a little longer. I would also be OK with Laird providing some platoon support for Granderson and maybe once in awhile for Gardner. Thames can be used as well, but enough already with the folly that Granderson was able to be cured of his poor hitting against lefties by Long. I am just glad that all the debates about Gardner are over with (this board was nuts about him not being good enough). he is leading the league in pitches per AB and been very good all around. he is a key reason why we have been successful because if he were what many of you thought we would have had to trade for someone else.

  133. Joe from Long Island July 20th, 2010 at 11:28 am

    Good morning, all –

I remember the immortal Bobcat, a few years ago, and one of the best things he said was “They let you know what they want you to know….”

Joe G. has gone from “We need Joba to be good” to “We evaluate everybody every day”. There was a big story in Newsday today about the writer interviewing Cash, and Cash saying almost the exact same thing about Joba.

Robertson did a very nice job Sunday, coming into that situation and stopping the Rays cold. Joba was given the assignment of getting thru two innings, and in the second he let in a run. I’m sure Joe did not want to have to use Mariano for that one out; apart from wear and tear on Mo, Joe wanted to see Joba just get the job done. I think Joba’s failure to do so triggered these latest stories and quotes.

Everybody sees what’s been going on with Joba, so I don’t know how much trade value he has. I do think that he is running out of time with the Yankees. I really hope he gets it going, but, at some point you have to perform.

Certainly Joba has had a disappointing season so far, but I remember how bad Robertson looked to begin 2010, and for the most part he has bounced back. Predicting (mortal) relief pitcher performance can be a maddening exercise.

  137. Ghost of Steinbrenner July 20th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Is it me or what? Every time a team uses a rookie pitcher or a call up, they mow the Yanks down and usually get a win. The Los Angeles Angels of Anheim in Southern California North of Santa Anna Outside of Yorba Linda, are going with such a pitcher tonight!
