Hughes falls flat against Angels

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 20, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This night started pretty well for Phil Hughes, but after a harmless inning and two-thirds, the Angels jumped on him for six runs through five-plus innings for a 10-2 Anaheim win. It matched Hughes’ shortest outing of the year, and the six-earned runs matched his season high. Really, the only pitching bright spot for the Yankees was Jonathan Albaladejo, who was just called up. The offense scored two runs in the first inning, but went scoreless in the last eight.

Go get ‘em next time, Phil!

Tonite’s game should have come with a warning label attached.

“In case of emergency break glass. Pull handle. Flush. Wash hands thoroughly before exiting.”

Get ‘em tommorrow. Some days are diamonds some are stones.

This one was a boulder. :)

All I can say is…I disagree with the people who merely want to tweak this team.

The talk now is that Tampa could add Prince Fielder.

  4. Melk Man July 20th, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Girardi alluded to the fact that the bullpen not only has had trouble holding leads… but like tonight, they simply kill any chance of us coming back with their tack on runs. They simply cannot pitch 1-2-3 innings.

A 4 run deficit turns into an 8 run deficit. That is as big a problem as holding leads. It’s also why out comeback numbers are down… last year’s pen was great at holding the game where it was. This year, they push it out of hand every chance they get

  5. Bret The Hitman July 20th, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Albaladejo is a middle reliever. Not the guy.

Has Park been DFA’s yet? If not, why no?

They lost ugly, but in the end, it’s one loss, whether it’s 10-2 or 3-2.

    They’ll bounce back.

I did not catch Phil’s night as I watched the second half of the game. What went wrong?

  8. ron July 20th, 2010 at 10:49 pm

I don’t see tampa adding fielder.
It will cost them at least 3 top prospects & he is gone because even in arbitration fielder is getting 15 million minimum next year.

    rumors,rumors.

  9. Carlo July 20th, 2010 at 10:49 pm

    Well said Melk Man.

As for Tampa getting Fielder – that doesn’t worry me at all. There are few players that make Tampa better than us. Prince Fielder isn’t ont of them.

  10. LGY July 20th, 2010 at 10:49 pm

“Albaladejo is a middle reliever. Not the guy.”

    ————————–

The Yankees could use a middle reliever. Their entire relief corps outside of Mo has stunk. Not just the set up role.

  11. Rich in NJ July 20th, 2010 at 10:49 pm

The Yankees can call up Montero to counter any move another team makes.

Montero has officially busted through the .800 OPS mark.

  14. TheStraw July 20th, 2010 at 10:51 pm

I was all for getting Cliff Lee, not simply tweaking the team. But there are not many difference makers like him out there. Fielder is not one of them, and I wonder if or what talent the Rays would part with to get him.

  15. MTU July 20th, 2010 at 10:52 pm

    Mike In Chicago-

He lacked command. That was about it. Made a few criticial mistakes.

  16. TheStraw July 20th, 2010 at 10:54 pm

If Pie gets a walk off will the O’s pie him?

  17. Captain Clutch July 20th, 2010 at 10:55 pm

“What else would you have done with that pen before the season started, given the previous track records of those guys?”
    ————–

Park is an NL guy so I never thought he was a good signing. Marte is always hurt so there wasn’t any reason to think he would stay healthy all season. That is why including Coke in the Granderson deal was very puzzling. The W.Sox and Rays signed guys coming off injuries and they have been rewarded with Putz and Benoit. Cash could of went that route signing someone cheap and hoping it works out or trading for someone. He basically kept the bullpen the same and expected all of Scranton to come up and pitch lights out.

  18. TheStraw July 20th, 2010 at 10:56 pm

    No pie for Pie.

  19. YanksfaninPA July 20th, 2010 at 10:56 pm

Crappy lost…we really need to rely on Javy to shut them down tomorrow. Hopefully the bats awaken early and often unlike tonight where they started off hot and went flat.

Albaladejo did alright. but he didnt show why he was SO dominant in Triple A. I honestly don’t know how he put up those extremely dominant numbers, because he doesn’t have the stuff to exhibit those numbers.

Yankees need to trade for Leo Nunez or Scott Downs. I also think Cashman should call about Evan Meek of the Pirates.

As for hitting goes. Jeter has to get going. He his REALLY hurting the team right now with the position he bats in the lineup. Adam Dunn is obviously not realistic because he’s just too costly.

Ty Wigginton, Cody Ross, or Wes Helms seems like okay options. Adam Dunn would be amazing, but it doesnt seem likely!!

Last question, anyone think about asking the Angels about Matsui or the Tigers about Damon? It would be interesting to see what they say. Cashman knows he made 2 mistakes with those guys, he should try to get one of them back for the DH spot. Better than anyone we have.

  22. WMD July 20th, 2010 at 10:59 pm

Cashman should not trade with Detroit any more. And I thought the Lilly for Weaver trade was bad.

  23. Erica in NY July 20th, 2010 at 10:59 pm

    Good night Yankee people!

  24. JobaTipsHisCap July 20th, 2010 at 11:02 pm

their starting rotation is OK, they need to add consistent arm(s) in the pen.
there’s nothing you can do about the inconsistent offense, you just have to pray for the best.

  25. JobaTipsHisCap July 20th, 2010 at 11:02 pm

    good night, Erica!

  26. P July 20th, 2010 at 11:04 pm

Rumor, Granderson called Dontrelle Willis or advice.

    :)

  27. ron July 20th, 2010 at 11:07 pm

If i am cashman i trade for a starter, put hughes in the pen & try to package granderson with some prospects for a bat.

  28. Justin23 July 20th, 2010 at 11:13 pm

I was so excited and hopeful when the Yanks got on the board in the first, only to see the wheels fall off the offense.

Just as an aside, as a longtime reader of this blog and the comments section—it is so disheartening to see how toxic the discourse has become. Go back to last season’s games, and, yes you’ll see trolls, but you’ll also see some great back and forth–some wise, some witty, some whimsical.

Everything seems to have taken a turn for the rancid around here.

via MLBTR, it seems like the Phillies might be moving in on Oswalt, though it is still speculation.

    Phillies Discussing Major Trade
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 20 at 10:07pm CST]

10:06pm: Ed Price of AOL FanHouse hears that the Astros may be close to presenting Oswalt with a trade scenario for him to consider (Twitter link). There’s no guarantee that Oswalt would accept a deal to Philly.

9:59pm: ESPN reports that the Phillies have shopped J.A. Happ. The club’s front office has explored trades for Jayson Werth more aggressively in recent days.

9:52pm: The Phillies were not talking about Ben Sheets, Dan Haren or any of the Rays pitchers as of early tonight, according to Olney (via Twitter).

9:38pm: There are indications that the Phillies are working on a major trade for a starting pitcher, according to ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark. The team would move Jayson Werth in a related trade if they acquire a pitcher, according to Stark, who notes that the Phils have spent lots of time exploring a Roy Oswalt deal (Twitter link).

The Phillies recently optioned Kyle Kendrick to the minors and lost Jamie Moyer to an elbow strain, so they could use starting pitching depth. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. hinted today that the club could acquire a starter by Saturday. The Phils have already committed $135MM to next year’s payroll, so adding an expensive arm like Haren or Oswalt would take some maneuvering.

Horrible throw by the scrub catcher. Had Pena out by a mile.

  32. Bronx Jeers July 20th, 2010 at 11:17 pm

Anybody else feel like they’re suffering from post-impostor stress disorder?

I’m having issues believing people are who they say they are.

Any of you lawyers think I have a case? All I’m looking for is free coffee for life. And I’m fine with plain-old drip.

  33. vblade July 20th, 2010 at 11:19 pm

Lame loss. Go get the split tomorrow.

Hughes needs to right the ship for next time, too many pitches over the middle of the plate.

The offense needs to try and stay close.

Dejo looks like he might be climbing the pecking order quickly.

  34. NzYme July 20th, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Put Hughes in the Pen? You guys are nuts. He’s got 11 wins for pete’s sake!

  35. vblade July 20th, 2010 at 11:21 pm

BTW, wasn’t around for the GT. Trolls reduced or no?

  36. Captain Clutch July 20th, 2010 at 11:25 pm

If the Phillies are talking to the Astros about Oswalt I am surprised that they would have the money to take on his contract. That is a lot of money to add. Oswalt is still good but he has been hurt and seems to be slowing down the last couple of years.

  37. TheStraw July 20th, 2010 at 11:27 pm

O’s and A’s are making more noise offensively than the Yankees did tonight.

  40. Drivenbyjeter2 July 20th, 2010 at 11:30 pm

I just saw that on MLBTR too!!!

It did say though, that they are talking to teams on ALL FRONTS (the phillies). So, that doesn’t only leave a possibility about them trading FOR a player (oswalt), But could be trading a player AWAY (Werth).

Are the Yankees possibly making a push for the offense? We’ll have to wait and see. I say go out and get Werth

  41. Drivenbyjeter2 July 20th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

    GO O’s!!!!

  42. Bret The Hitman July 20th, 2010 at 11:37 pm

Now that we can’t trade Javy or a starting pitcher, how are we going to acquire Jason Werth?

  43. Pepitone July 20th, 2010 at 11:37 pm

I see Phil Hughes is still suffering from youthful mistakes; he’ll learn. The future is very bright for this kid.

I understand the Cubs want to trade Lilly to the Yanks. I’m for it, just as long as Cashman does his homework and doesn’t get fleeced like he did with the Tigers.

Hey, registration! Finally! No more impostors, so when I see SJ44 from now on it will be SJ44.

I like it. Less morons, more baseball people … hopefully.

  44. Bret The Hitman July 20th, 2010 at 11:37 pm

An 8+ ERA cannot be attributed to luck. Neyer grasping at straws.

  49. Captain Clutch July 20th, 2010 at 11:44 pm

Cashman basically said that the Phillies wouldn’t trade Lee to the Yanks. I highly doubt they would trade Werth here either. Unless you want to give up a really good prospect. There is no way they would want to help us out. Cashman’s trade partners are Pirates, Cubs, Royals and any other team definitely out of it.

  50. TheStraw July 20th, 2010 at 11:49 pm

Rays are the team that is working aggressively to get Werth.

WE’RE SO SCREWED. If Cashman doesn’t make a splash to improve this team, we’re in trouble. The Rangers have really improved and now the Rays?

Speaking of the devil…..GO Orioles for coming back and beatin those rays

  57. JobaTipsHisCap July 20th, 2010 at 11:51 pm

I just find out birds win. :)

    Now, let’s go, A’s!

  58. Tyler July 20th, 2010 at 11:58 pm

As bad as the Yanks looked tonight, the rays lost and the sox are in a tight one (which they probably will pull it out) so really they didn’t lose much of their lead at all. Still 2.5 up and at least 5 over the Sox. Still comfortable. Hopefully Javy throws well and keeps up his good momentum tom. I’d love to beat Piniero.

  59. jackamir July 21st, 2010 at 12:10 am

Rays are in on Werth! The Yanks have to get a bat & maybe a servicable Pitcher. They have some DEADWOOD in their bullpen. Montero, PLEASE!!!!!!!
