Has anyone seen Jamie Hoffmann?

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 21, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

In the Yankees clubhouse this morning, there are a little more than a dozen reporters, all of them discussing the fact we were just here a few hours ago.

There are four players in here with us: Chad Gaudin, Sergio Mitre, Jonathan Albaladejo and the recently arrived Mark Teixeira.

Funniest thing in the room? A letter addressed to Rule 5 pick Jamie Hoffmann, who hasn’t been with the Yankees since the middle of spring training.

    What a hoot.

That said, the bench needs another reliable Hairston-like bat.

Any Angel Berroa letters around ? :)

Just put the letter in the leftover pile of Josh Phelps, Andy Phillips and Bubba Crosby letters

    Pat,

I would try and get as much out of it as I could.$100,000 is nothing to shack a stick at. Not to say I wouldn’t be looking into negotiating with A-Rod but come on, that is 14 years of season tickets to the Yankees.

Forget the season tickets, $150,000 can get you a nice sports car. Or down payment for a house.

Derek Jeter’s struggles, slump, whatever you want to call it has been talked about on here.

But, one thing in particular seems to really be bothering people about Derek: His first pitch swinging.

Last year he had incredible success swinging at the first pitch. When he swung at the first pitch and put it in play he had a .448 AVG and a 1.133 OPS.

He swung at the first pitch of the at bat and put it in play 91 times in 2009.

In 2010 however he only has a .299 AVG and .672 OPS when he swings at the first pitch and puts it in ball. He is not having nearly as much success as 2009 and getting poor results in general without even taking into account 2009.

The biggest problem though is that not only is Derek not adjusting, he is swinging more often and putting the ball in play on the first pitch.

This season he has done that 71 times already. Just 20 less times than last year.

If Derek plays 153 games like last year he is on pace to swing at the first pitch and put it in play 121 times.

30 more times than last year despite having much worse results.

I imagine that since the #600 ball will go to Rodriguez. Either Rivera or Robertson will catch it tomorrow night in the Yankee bullpen.

the more I think about it, the more a trade for Werth would be great for tampa.

houston, philly, and tampa should get together for a 3 team deal. philly doesnt have the prospects to land oswalt. tb prospects to houston, oswalt to philly, and werth to tampa.

i know i sound like a schmuck speculating, but that seems a lot better than philly trying to negotiate individual trades with houston and tampa.

  16. Phil in Columbus July 21st, 2010 at 10:19 am

A couple of jersey, a bat or 2 and some baseballs, all signed of course. The biggie would be allowing me to be the oldest bat boy the Yanks ever had for a series against the Sox. Arod could get his baseball back then.

  17. Blogger Formerly Known As Dan July 21st, 2010 at 10:21 am

I can’t believe anyone would just hand it to A-Rod. That is like someone throwing out a gold brick and saying, “ok now, you have the option to give it back to this man who earns 30 million + every year, or give it to someone in return of money. It’s not like you have his child for ransom.

  18. Bill D July 21st, 2010 at 10:22 am

“philly doesnt have the prospects to land oswalt.”

Shouldn’t need much in the way of prospects if they’re willing to pay Oswalt’s full ride.

Small sample size but same as the article, seems split on gender lines.

Women would give it back and guys want to profit financially from it.

I would want to give it to him too.

I’m not one who sees the value in autographs or memoriibila so he can save the signed equipment or donate it to a charity instead but if he would like to let me use his box seats for a few games I would be happy to accept that.

  22. GayleF July 21st, 2010 at 10:26 am

    Pat-

Talk about gender lines the guy in front of me caught Johnny Peralta’s 100 HR ball at the stadium. He negotiated for 3 innings on what he would get before he gave it back to him and that is an opposing player and not even an A level player. Needless to say I think if a female had caught the ball the discussions maybe would have lasted about 1 out.

I don’t think A-Rod is an unreasonable guy. I’m sure he’d appreciate the gesture and compensate/reward the fan handsomely anyways. Maybe not a ton of cash, but probably a lot of memorabilia.

The guy isn’t an oil tycoon. He’d do the right thing and make it worth the fan’s while.

I guess it depends on what your motivation is when you go to the game. I am not there to make money. I am there to enjoy baseball and root for my team. If I get a ball which I have before that is bonus. A milestone which means much more to the player than to me and the opportunity not to play flea market with a player on the team I root for is not something I am interested in doing. Would I ask to meet him and hand him the ball and get an autograph absolutely and I m sure that would be accommodated. Anything beyond that just not my style.

From what I read all his HRs at the Stadium have been tracked and Section 135, Row 18, Seat 6 is being called the “money seat”.

Seat prices in that area for this week are selling way over face value.

After 599 is hit, special balls will be used that have markings that can’t be seen by the human eye to be able to verify the authenticity of the ball so people can’t sub out a fake.

Trust me, I’m not out at a ball game to catch a ball. I love the game of baseball and love the Yankees. I’m not going to wrestle anyone for a ball, but if $100,000 falls into my lap in the form of a baseball, some questions need to be asked.

First off, as much as I love the Yankees I love my family plenty more. How would that money help my family? A lot.

Next, think of what 100,000 would do for a charity. I would get great pleasure from an anonymous donation of $100,000 to a charity.

So, it is really a priority stand point. If A-Rod’s happiness is worth more than everything else then kuddos to you. It wont make you more of a Yankee fan to return the ball.

  51. Joe from Long Island July 21st, 2010 at 10:47 am

pat, that’s a terrific question to kick around.

I’m going to Saturday’s game, but our seats are just to the wrong side of the RF foul pole, so I’m not likely to get it. But, I’d be happy to be at the game where he gets #600 (we were at the Aug. 4, 2007 game where he got #500, against Kyle Davies).

If I did get it, I think I’d probably return it to him, thought $100K is a lot of money. Probably do some negotiating for a photo and handshake of my giving it to him, some Alex and Yankee memorabilia, and maybe an upgrade on our seat location, in perpetuity of course. Remember, the Yanks have an interest in this, also.
