Rodriguez hits No. 599 in Yankees win

Alex Rodriguez hit the 599th home run of his career, helping the Yankees to a 10-4 win against the Royals tonight at Yankee Stadium. His first attempt at No. 600 ended in an RBI double that drove in the Yankees final run. The Yankees other home run was an inside-the-park homer by Derek Jeter, the second inside-the-park home run of his career.

A-Rod won the Chevy Player of the Game over Wilson Betemit.

    I DEMAND A RECOUNT!

That was a great at bat by Alex – I think he’ll hit it tomorrow.

?The Yankees are 13-4 in July.?

Talk about winning ugly. Although it beats most of the alternatives.

    _____________________________________

Indeed. They are winning in different ways; before the break stellar starting pitching, now the starters have been a bit shaky but the offense is picking them up. Sign of a very good team.

TWO bags of balls instead of one???

  6. Betsy July 22nd, 2010 at 10:38 pm

Ugly since the break to be sure, but before hand they’d been fantastic.

Hopefully the pitching will come around because this go-round no one pitched well.”

    ++++++++++++++

Rough patch, thankfully they have managed to win during it, unlike earlier in the season when they lost during it.

Ebb and flow of the season, starters will get back on track, lets hope it begins with A.J. tomorrow.

He needs a quality start after his last performance or lack thereof.

Really thought he would build on his prior 2 starts before laying an egg against Tampa

  8. sunny615 July 22nd, 2010 at 10:38 pm

You know he was trying for it in the ninth. Probably will get it in the next three games. A not so dominant start by CC but he did well enough to win. Thank goodness they feasted on the bullpen.

  9. Tn Yankee July 22nd, 2010 at 10:39 pm

I’d rather have stellar starting pitching but a team that finds different ways to win is a good thing

  10. m July 22nd, 2010 at 10:39 pm

So, what’s happening? I was following via mobile. Saw that CC struggled a bit early on and then left with men on base. Robertson in to clean up?

I thought for sure that Robertson would stay in for the 8th. But alas, ’twas not to be. Joba struggled a bit, didn’t he?

In the end, they won. Looks like a great day for the top of the order.

I think Alex hits it tomorrow as well. I think he’ll be trying to get it over with.

  12. Chris W July 22nd, 2010 at 10:40 pm

All in all, that was quite an enjoyable game thread. Little to no trolling, and no fighting. As it should be.

  13. Erica in NY July 22nd, 2010 at 10:40 pm

For all of the whining around here, you would think the Yankees were 4-13 this month instead of 13-4.

I just don’t necessarily buy the concept of an “ugly win”. Not even the best team is going to be perfect every single night. Sure, in a perfect world you will win 7-0 every night with a stellar offense and pitching.

But I think the most important mark of a team is that when one aspect falters, the rest steps up. In this case tonight, the pitching wasn’t perfect. CC weaved in and out of trouble, but the offense jumped in early so we were never out of it. What more can you really ask for?

  14. GreenBeret7 July 22nd, 2010 at 10:41 pm

There are no ugly wins. Only ugly losses.

  15. GreenBeret7 July 22nd, 2010 at 10:41 pm

Rodriguez will be better off getting the homer tomorrow night. The sooner he hits it, the sooner he goes on a typical 3 week run

  16. Betsy July 22nd, 2010 at 10:41 pm

Macfan, yep – the offense is generally carrying them now (though Tuesday was not a shining moment for them).

The staff is suffering a bit – AJ really needs to come up big tomorrow and he needs to carry that forward.

  17. stuckey99 July 22nd, 2010 at 10:42 pm

“Sign of a very good team.”

Sign of an historically deep, veteran team.

Yankees simply have more talent than anyone else. That’s why slumps and injuries have been “absorbed” all year.

They have so much talent that just common probability will dictate they’ll be in, and ahead, in most games.

  18. SJ44 July 22nd, 2010 at 10:42 pm

No such thing as ugly wins.

Wins are wins. You take them any way you can get them.

There are going to be rough spots in a season.

Good teams win games while going thru rough patches.

That’s what this team is doing and it’s impressive.

  19. Yogi Mantle July 22nd, 2010 at 10:42 pm

CC was not looking great out there, but he still went pretty deep in the game considering how he started out.

Alex should just keep thinking that he already has 600 (which he does unofficially – you know that HR that was called a double that helped lead to instant replay for HRs).

  20. Betsy July 22nd, 2010 at 10:42 pm

I’d rather win ugly than lose pretty – you don’t get style points for playing great and losing nor do you lose points for playing sloppy and winning.

Very ugly indeed. I mean, they are only 4-2. And they were only 2-1 against the second best team in baseball.

I hear you on that, I rather take the W any day of the week, I consider it evening out for those nights when you get shut down and can’t buy a hit and look lifeless.

  23. GreenBeret7 July 22nd, 2010 at 10:43 pm

The starting pitching has carried this team for the majority of the season. It’s time for the offense to take over and starting carrying the load for a change.

  24. Jerkface July 22nd, 2010 at 10:44 pm

A-rod going the other way with power, his HR was a fliner, and his double was a nice liner. Great to see. There is just something nice about opposite field hits.

Burnett could learn from that, Sabathia was not close to sharp today and yet battled all game and ended up with the W

  27. Yogi Mantle July 22nd, 2010 at 10:46 pm

It seems to me that the pitching and hitting have been helping this team at different times. Fortunately many of the games where the pitching is letting them down the offense seems to take off. Then the pitching comes around and the offense lets down.

This was a nice outing from Park tonight, even though it was a non-pressure outing.

  28. luis July 22nd, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Burnett could learn from that, Sabathia was not close to sharp today and yet battled all game and ended up with the W

I think that’s beyond aj capabilities

  29. Yogi Mantle July 22nd, 2010 at 10:50 pm

Totally agree Macfan. I am hoping that Burnett can keep his head on straight to keep the Yankees in the game. He is such a frustrating pitcher, great stuff but can melt down like Chernobyl all within the same game.

  30. Bronx Jeers July 22nd, 2010 at 10:52 pm

Alex was a different player at 499 HR’s.

He’s seems A LOT more relaxed that he was in 2007 and that was perhaps his best season ever.

I couldn’t tell you if he’s gonna hit 30 HR’s for his 13th consecutive season but I know he will get to 100 RBI’s for the 13th time in a row which will tie him with Jimmie Fox and Gehrig.

Do you think the Yankees are catchable in the AL East?

You know I’m not entirely sure I agree. They’ve started to have some pitching issues too, and it really is interesting, I mean, the Red Sox, last time I checked, had outscored the Yankees for the year even with all the players they’ve sat down. If Andy Pettitte is ever going to quite be the same and Phil Hughes is starting to run out of gas and A.J. Burnett is not going to right the ship, all of a sudden you look at the Yankees rotation and say, “The Red Sox rotation is way better than that.” The Red Sox, even with all their injuries, have scored more runs. I think the Red Sox defensively are better than the Yankees. You know you can make the case where the Red Sox are the better team, and the Rays have the chance to make a big deal here. That’s a very talented team. They’re only three out in the loss column. I’m not ready to say that the season’s over. I’m really not.
    ***********

It’s fine not to say the season is over, but at this point, how does Stark say with a straight face that the Sox are possibly a better team?

  34. Rich in NJ July 22nd, 2010 at 10:55 pm

“I just don’t necessarily buy the concept of an “ugly win””

Erica, when you win despite getting pretty bad pitching, it’s usually kind of an ugly win. It’s also a figure of speech. Just sayin’.

  35. Betsy July 22nd, 2010 at 10:55 pm

I agree that the Yankees rotation does not look that good now – not at all – but the Sox have Lester and Buchholz; Lackey has been very bad, Dice-K has been up and down………….and who else do they have? Beckett wasn’t great when he was pitching – now if he comes back healthy and raring to go, that’s another thing.

  36. luis July 22nd, 2010 at 10:57 pm

    Bronx Jeers,

Last year’s post season helped Arod to relax and understand that this is a team effort, and the important thing is to win a world series not individual miliestones, because when you perform eventually those milestones are reached

Let us all pray that when the Yanks are forced to make a roster move on Saturday that we can finally say goodbye to Chan Ho Park. Maybe Cashman can retire his # in his office and put it next to the Farnsworths and Latroy Hawkins ones he’s got hanging up.

  41. RS July 22nd, 2010 at 10:59 pm

    Betsy,

The problem with all these Boston writers is that they assume the Red Sox can only get better while the Yankees can only get worse. Even though they’ve been proven wrong time and again.

  42. Laura - I Bleed Blue July 22nd, 2010 at 11:00 pm

I hope Kim Jones asks Jorge what the hell was going on tonight.

  43. SJ44 July 22nd, 2010 at 11:01 pm

Stark is playing to his audience in that interview.

Even Red Sox people aren’t thinking about catching the Yankees right now.

They are more focused on catching the Rays because they believe that’s more realistic.

Also, hate to inform Jayson but, the Yankees are a much better defensive team than the Red Sox.

    It’s not even close.

  44. Betsy July 22nd, 2010 at 11:02 pm

RS, Jayson Stark is ESPN’s national baseball writer. I respect the Sox a great deal, but I think he’s trying to cater to his audience (Sox fans) by saying that.

    SJ44

How’s the nephew doing? Is he able to start baseball activities yet?

  46. Betsy July 22nd, 2010 at 11:03 pm

Now, the Sox have had a ton of injuries so would they be closer if they’d not had them? Yes they would – I don’t think the Yankees are THAT much better than they are under ordinary circumstances – but Starks’ comment was just silly.

  47. Dan in Philly July 22nd, 2010 at 11:03 pm

anyone watch that postgame interview with alex? pretty revealing stuff, looks like a genuinely changed dude. really happy for him

  48. Wolf In Pinstripes July 22nd, 2010 at 11:05 pm

If 26 wins over .500 in a stacked division that includes Stark’s superior Sox at 7 games out constitutes ugly, I’d like to see what the duckling looks like when it emerges.

Prediction: Alex hits no. 600 in the 5th tomorrow against Bannister.

  49. Rich in NJ July 22nd, 2010 at 11:06 pm

Why does anyone care what Stark thinks? He’s an extremely unimpressive human.

  50. stuckey99 July 22nd, 2010 at 11:06 pm

Yankees need to play just .588 ball the rest of the way to get to 100 wins.

The Red Sox .701 and they play 17 of their next 24 on the road.

    It’s over folks.

  51. Bronx Jeers July 22nd, 2010 at 11:08 pm

The Yanks could end this month 30 games over .500. Remarkable.

They could play .500 for the remainder of the season and still get 96 wins. And they ain’t playing .500 for 2 months straight.

  52. Carl July 22nd, 2010 at 11:09 pm

CC looks mad when he talks about himself. Smiles when he talks about his teammates.

  53. Betsy July 22nd, 2010 at 11:10 pm

Rich, I was just googling along, nice and innocent-like, lol – I didn’t expect to read stuff like this. I really do think it was obvious that he was playing to the crowd……….which is really beneath him.

  54. SJ44 July 22nd, 2010 at 11:12 pm

    KPB,

He can begin baseball activities next week.

The wires are out and he dropped 15 pounds.

Hes most likely out for the season but, will probably play in the AFL this Fall.

    Thanks for asking.

or, maybe they wouldn’t, no way to know. Their (Sox) replacements have produced very well for them to keep them in the race.

GoYanks, you’re right – there’s no way to know; it’s just something I believe. It will be interesting to see how Beckett pitches……..he’s very capable of being dominant, but he’s also a bit like AJ. Right now I’m more concerned about the Yankees SP – if it rights itself, then there’s not much to worry about. If it doesn’t, then there is.

  68. Tyler July 22nd, 2010 at 11:31 pm

The throw to 3rd was a complete mental error but it was the throw to 1st that worried me most. It almost looked like he didn’t have confidence that he could throw the ball on a line accurately to 1st. He’s lobbed a few throws like that over there this year and he’s lucky he has Tex over there and not Giambi. I hope Jorge doesn’t become mental about throwing the ball and has confidence in his arm. Either that or he has just been too lazy sometimes to get the proper angle and throw it correctly down to 1st instead of lobbing it over the runners head…

  69. Tyler July 22nd, 2010 at 11:37 pm

Anybody see Mcallister’s start for SWB tonight? I know he’s been struggling at AAA and was curious as to whether it was anything mechanics wise or health wise. He’s always cruised through every level. AAA is a pretty big jump so is he just not adjusted yet?

  70. YANKEES July 22nd, 2010 at 11:40 pm

    A-Rod deserves this.

  71. BIG AL July 22nd, 2010 at 11:50 pm

The way that I understand it; KLong will straighten out the hitters, Eiland will straighten out the pitchers, but who is going to straighten out the Posada throws. Jorge almost blew the game 3 times tonight; the throw to 3rd, the tag he never made at the plate, and his, excuse the saying, throw to 1st. I know I’ll get a lot of heat etc., but, I can’t wait for him to be the back-up, or retire. At one time you could almost excuse his defense, because he was a great offensive catcher. Now, his offense is dropping off, and his defense still stinks. Yes, I have a right to my opinion.

I hate how A-Rod isn’t getting much press. Its annoying how much the media has an effect on people. A Jon Heyman/Jeff Pearlman/Rob Neyer article comes out, and magically, people start to feel the same way as the writers! The writers aren’t holy scribes; they’re biased people who influence the fans FAR, FAR too much. B/c they don’t care about A-Rod, the people aren’t being given that opportunity too. Just like how the media praises LBJ one day, and then quickly turns around and bashes him b/c they are jealous he formed a Dream Team with 2 other players. Championships are championships, and they did nothing wrong (they all even took pay cuts!) yet one night, an SI writer decided to call the whole thing a circus-anyone remember that???- and bam, like wildfire, the writers bash James. And magically, many in America turn their backs on the “selfish, greedy, egotistical” James as well. What a shame.

Nice to have my identity back! Great job by Lohud requiring registration. Thanks Lohud!!!

Lackey’s pitching a no hitter in Seattle. You know you have truly written off a team when they are your least favorite team and one of their pitchers is pitching a no hitter – and it doesn’t bother you a whit if he succeeds! I will say, however, that I expect my mere mention of it to put the kabosh on it! :)

Now I will go and check through a thread of two to see whether “I” have already posted here since registration. Because I have gotten all new email addresses doesn’t mean that my lohud identity hasn’t continued to be pirated!

And enough with how A-Rod is a cheat and all that; how come no one hear bashes HGH Pettitte? He cheated at one point too, but it was seemingly swept under the carpet. Why? Probably because the media didn’t want to rip him. Its easier to rip the 30 million-per-year guy; probably feels more satisfying for these jealous writers/people who won’t have 1/10 the amount of success that A-Rod has had.

I really hope the Yankees scout in attendance in Seattle doesn’t mean Cashman is considering dealing with Seattle again.

I know they have a couple of relievers, but I’d almost hate to do any deal with them after the way they played the Lee trade.

Well re Posada having a bad game – sixth inning man on third, batter strikes out on a pitch in the dirt. Posada decides to pick off the batter at third (maybe he was concerned that the batter at third would try to score) throws the ball away, batter scores and the SO victim winds up on second, weird play. Next inning, again a SO in the dirt, Posada throws a looper over the runner, Teix goes up high to catch the throw and barely beats the runner to first. On Gardy’s throw never tagged the runner, got the call anyway. Balls were bouncing off Posada all night, he didn’t perform well last night.

Hi guys, I’ve been lurking this blog for several years now. Posted only twice before but I figured now is a better time then ever to become active in this wonderful community. Keep up the great work Chad, Sam and other posters, as well as most (not many that rub me the wrong way) of the members. Thank you all – Kamal

posada laos is a real knucklehead. 5th grades would not have thrown the ball to 3rd… he runs the bases like a 5th grader. he is the least cerebral catcher I have seen play at such a high level….”

Um…he’s a borderline HOF. As for the “..the least cerebral catcher…”, maybe or maybe not but you have zero, zilch, no way of knowing. Since you have qualified your statement with “…I have seen play…”, your critique means pretty much not a lot, unless you have seen (on a regular basis) all the other catchers who “play at such a high level”.
