Yankees wait through the rain to beat Royals

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 23, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Fans waited through an hour-and-25-minute rain delay in hopes of seeing home run No. 600. Instead they got a bunch of singles and doubles, and a 7-1 Yankees win against the Royals. Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a walk. He broke his bat in his final at-bat. A.J. Burnett pitched five strong innings and seemed poised to pitch deep into the game before the rain came. Robinson Cano had three RBI. Jorge Posada and Brett Gardner had two each.

Nice win all around – too bad AJ didn’t have the chance to pitch deeper into the game, but at least he got the win.

I love hearing Robbie. He seemed a bit taken back by Alex’s comments.

Nice that Robbie is glad that the fans are giving Arod his props.

Cano is the next 1,000 RBI Yankee. Swisher’s still 862 away.

I would say Alex is next in line.

Nice little win there. Will probably pick up a game on TB. Sox are tied in Seattle right now.

Erica, I will share a huge plate of crow with you if Joba goes anywhere. I absolutely do not believe the Yanks are giving him up.

And yes, Regis, that’s my final answer.

  11. stuckey99 July 23rd, 2010 at 11:16 pm

For a team with no bullpen, a shaky rotation, no DH, no bench, and a couple of automatic outs vs lefties, the Yankees somehow seem to find ways to win games.

    Trisha:

You may be correct, but may not. Joba is or at least was in the deal for Haren. I have this confirmed by my sources. As of now, I am hearing that Joba is not the front-runner in the deal or may no longer be in the deal whatsoever.

I am not going to be shocked either way.. but if I had to bet on it. I would say that the Yanks are willing to part with him at this point.

  14. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Cano is actually about to catch Reggie Jackson in Yankee RBI’s. He’s 43rd all-time. After tonight I think he’s 1 behind Reggie.

Arod’s the current closest at nearly 800. He’s about to catch Tommy Henrich who is 17th all-time. After that comes Winfield, Wally Pipp, Nettles and O’Neill.

  15. blake July 23rd, 2010 at 11:21 pm

“For a team with no bullpen, a shaky rotation, no DH, no bench, and a couple of automatic outs vs lefties, the Yankees somehow seem to find ways to win games.”

Its what people seem to fail to realize….every other team has those same problems and then some and many teams have a ton more issues than that. There are no perfect teams and the Yankee offense and bullpens are starting to show signs of life.

  16. blake July 23rd, 2010 at 11:22 pm

If Nova were in the deal would he be considered the headliner over Joba?

  17. luis July 23rd, 2010 at 11:24 pm

  22. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 23rd, 2010 at 11:36 pm

Lost, I don’t know who you are but I’m from the Show Me state. Well, not literally but figuratively. Best I can say is that I don’t believe your sources. At all. And that’s no offense to your sources. If it is counterintuitive to me, then I’m not buying, no matter who on any baseball forum says they know otherwise. Or even when the media postulates that they have the scoop. This one is ESPECIALLY counterintuitive to me.

Okay, even if it made sense to me, hearing it on a baseball forum holds no quarter for me.

Long ago I decided that baseball rumors are a dime a dozen and if even one tenth of them came out, the Yankees would look like a decidedly different team today.

If the Y organization makes an announcement, then I find out something has happened. Forum trade rumor chatter just doesn’t pique my interest.

  25. Pat M. July 23rd, 2010 at 11:41 pm

Blake, I think Cashman will make every effort to obtain him and slot him in the rotation and move Hughes back into the pen when Pettite comes back…..Joba will or could be out of town….They’ll still go after Lee next season regardless…..

  26. LGY July 23rd, 2010 at 11:41 pm

    trisha,

Why is it counterintuitive to trade Joba in a package for Dan Haren?

  27. Bronx Jeers July 23rd, 2010 at 11:41 pm

What Youk went into the wrong dugout?

Or did the M’s finally give up the decaf?

  28. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 23rd, 2010 at 11:42 pm

    Pat M – I’m not buying it.

There isn’t a move that the Yankee organization makes that I question. So it’s not coming from there. It’s just that I refuse to get caught up in forum trade rumors.

I’m entirely accepting of the fact that the Yankees know more than I do about what’s best for the team. If they announce that any kind of trade has been made, at that point I believe that a trade has been made. I believe nothing until that point.

I actually think that makes me pretty smart. :)

  29. Tyler July 23rd, 2010 at 11:42 pm

    Pat M-

As if anything else could go wrong in Seattle. What an absolutely dreadful year up there. Maybe Felix instigated it and is on the trade block lol.

  30. blake July 23rd, 2010 at 11:43 pm

Its not really counterintuitive to me. If the Yankees have decided that Joba has no future as a starting pitcher in their organization then it would probably be the best use of him to deal him to a team that still thinks of him as a starter (if one exists).

I have no idea if the D’backs are that team or not, but if they are and you can get a quality starter like Haren for him then I think you do it. If Joba isn’t going back to the rotation at some point and the Yankees don’t see him as a future closer then you have to include him if it nets you a proven staring pitcher….JMO.

  31. ZachA July 23rd, 2010 at 11:44 pm

So…. Jesus Montero (and others) for Zach Grienke?

    http://www.athbaseball.com/201.....nt-so.html

  32. Tyler July 23rd, 2010 at 11:44 pm

It would be interesting to track Joba’s career if they do trade him. Maybe that would be a kick in the pants for him and he’d take off. There’s no doubting he has frontline starter potential. But he could just as easily fade into the oblivion. It’s a shame that he might have wasted a chance to be a star in NYC. Too big of a spotlight I think for him.

Keep in mind that Joba is arbitration eligible at the end of this year.

He is not going to be a 400K guy where his salary is inconsequential.

He is going to be a guy soon that is going to have to start justifying his salary.

  37. Lost July 23rd, 2010 at 11:46 pm

    trisha:

I don’t blame you for being a skeptic. I am one myself. However, It is not a coincidence that last night I posted Joba was being considered for Haren (from my sources) and then today it’s been confirmed by multiple non-anonymous sources?

    Luis:

One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Yanks love Lee and expect to make a run at him this off-season.

We’ll see how it shakes out.

  42. m July 23rd, 2010 at 11:51 pm

    Lost,

Even if you’re not for real, there’s enough smoke. Of course things happen. Teams back out, get cold feet, or just plain stab you in the gut.

If you had asked me last spring if Joba was untouchable, I would’ve said yes. But I think the Yankees are nearing the end of their rope, and he won’t be a minimum salary player much longer.

I asked earlier who wouldn’t swap Joba for Haren. I think we found our winner. Trisha. Bless her heart. :)

  43. m July 23rd, 2010 at 11:53 pm

And as Cash has said, no one is untouchable. (except maybe one particular pitcher)

  44. GreenBeret7 July 23rd, 2010 at 11:54 pm

I didn’t include Rodriguez because since 2004, 90% of everything I’ve read on here and in the media said that Rodriguez wasn;t a “true Yankee”.

  46. Tyler July 23rd, 2010 at 11:54 pm

    m-

it will be interesting to track Joba’s career if he does go to Arizona. He has such a high ceiling but also a pretty low floor in that he could completely bust. Maybe he finds peace in a less pressure environment like IPK. Would be interesting…

  47. Pat M. July 23rd, 2010 at 11:55 pm

LGY…..I’d welcome him in The Bronx with great fondness…….He’ll be reborn with the Yanks……The only question about him has been health and that seems to be in the past…..He’s a top shelf starter

Personally, I hope joba wakes up and starts throwing fire and stays with the Yanks, but it’s not likely. Will I be okay with getting Harin and not having Joba? Yep. Doesn’t mean I won’t miss the kid.

Anything interesting down on the farm today? Too lazy to go to milb.com right now lol. I saw Betances had a good start yesterday. Nice to see him go deeper into a game after 2 just ok outings.

  50. m July 23rd, 2010 at 11:58 pm

    Tyler,

I think he thrives if he goes to AZ. He’ll have the other amigo to hang with…j/k.

I think he really needs to start over, and keep it simple. A guy with his stuff doesn’t just lose it forever. Personally, I think there’s a mental block somewhere and that it stems from pressure.

Or he could just be out of shape and have crappy mechanics. I vacillate between the two theories.

Pat M – of course you’re right. And I would guess that I am in the vast minority when it comes to that stuff. But you know that I am such a party liner when it comes to the Yankees that I’m content to go about my business and not worry about what may or may not be happening in the background. If the Yankees say it’s the way to go, then I say it’s the way to go! But I don’t mind waiting until Christmas morning to find out what’s in the package. So while the rest of you shake the boxes and try to guess what may be inside, I just wait for santa to show up.

when they traded IPK, I think most on here knew that he would be solid in the NL and in that low pressure environment. It always seemed like it was more pressure than anything else with IPK. Joba is a different deal I agree. Right now I’m starting to think he’s just out of shape and has shoddy mechanics. Probably a combo of that and the mental block. He’s tough to figure out and I;ve given up trying lol. only one who can do it is joba. just woudl be interesting to see the results. I’m sure D-Backs fans would have some big expectations because he;’s still a big name around baseball from teh storm surrounding him when he came up in ’07…

  55. m July 24th, 2010 at 12:04 am

    Tyler,

Remember when Joba was ‘Next’? That was a huge deal.

BTW, do you visit River Avenue Blues? The do a DOTF report everyday. Highlighting stats and plays at every minor league level. Sort of a cheat sheet for some of us. :)

  56. Mike in Chicago July 24th, 2010 at 12:05 am

FYI…Yanks may not be front-runners for Haren.

    # Updating his earlier story, Magruder quotes Hall, the D’Backs CEO, as saying: “There are some other teams involved that have deals of at least equal value out there. I would not categorize the Yankees as a front-runner.”

Tricia, were you not disappointed in how the Cliff Lee situation turned out ???? He was just about issued a uni and then bam, he was gone and off to Dallas…..

  58. Tyler July 24th, 2010 at 12:07 am

    m-

I do remember that. I was a huge fan. The talent is still there not doubt about it. Something has just gone wrong whether he still hasn’t recovered from that night in Texas (but his velocity is up so I doubt that is it) or most likely his mechanics being out of wack causing a lack of location and command. He always had mechanics issues even in college.

I go to milb.com and usually look over the box scores. I have been to River Avenue Blues a few times too. I love following prospects. I started following them when I was still young and Drew Henson was the next big thing! I also have an Alfonso Soriano prospect card. I remember opening the pack and being in awe because i had just read about him being a good prospect lol.

  59. Bronx Jeers July 24th, 2010 at 12:07 am

Oh yeah I almost forgot about ARod’s “True Yankee” status.

He’s only got 79 RBI’s then. He drops from 18th all time to 193rd. Tied with Dion James and with Don Slaught firmly in his crosshairs.

  60. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 24th, 2010 at 12:08 am

“It’s always tough giving up the young kids. Trisha takes that very hard and I do understand where she is coming from.”

    Huh?

I think something is getting lost in the translation here. I haven’t made any statement about swapping Joba for anyone. All I said is that I didn’t believe the Yankees would trade off Joba.

If I end up being wrong, I will find that out if the Yankees announce he’s being traded.

  61. GreenBeret7 July 24th, 2010 at 12:10 am

Tyler, Phelps was a little shaky for Scranton. 5 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned runs, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts.

Maybe a left handed corner bat in Chad Tracy with another homer and 2 doubles. He plays all 4 corners.

Laird had a double and a homer with 3 runs scored in 4 at bats.

Mitchell was pretty good with 6 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs, all earned, 0 walks, 7 strikeouts. He got the win 8-4 but a mid-4 ERA

  62. LGY July 24th, 2010 at 12:12 am

    trisha,

I am just wondering why you think the Yankees wouldn’t trade Joba?

  63. Betsy July 24th, 2010 at 12:13 am

So when is Andy expected back, late August?

Joba is still talented, but whoever gets him (if anyone does) has a lot of work to do. It’s a bundle of things with him – and if his problem is in his head, that’s worse, because who can get into someone’s head? If he’s traded and he does well in that place, people (maybe me, lol) will fret – but who knows if he would have performed that way in NY? I’m sure the Yankees have tried their level best with him – I’m not sure NY is the best place for him.

  64. m July 24th, 2010 at 12:14 am

Oops, trisha. I guess I did read you wrong. Did you only mean to say that you will only believe a trade after it has happened? I thought you were saying that you didn’t think the Yankees would trade Joba.

  65. Tyler July 24th, 2010 at 12:14 am

    GB-

Thank you so much! I know somebody was giving up a hard time about it yesterday but I know most of us love hearing about the reports especially of the more noteable prospects who could make an impact in the Bronx in a few years (and also in trades as it is late July lol).

Phelps was due for a bit of a shaky outing. Amazing how smooth his transition to AAA has been. I was slow to get on his bandwagon but he’s looking like a september callup for sure. Good to see Laird getting hot again also. I saw that Chad Tracy has been really crushing the ball so far down at SwB. He’s a nice, low-risk signing.

Any chance that the Yanks convert Mitchell to a reliever. I know he’s a groundball pitcher. Not sure on his full arsenal but i just can’t imagine him being a starter on the Yanks even though he did have a good year last year and pitched for a big time program in Clemson.

  66. austinmac July 24th, 2010 at 12:14 am

Oswalt has said he wouldn’t require his 2012 option be picked up so he is not too much more expensive than Haren. I hope the Yankees are at least using him as their negotiating tool. I am not altogether sure he isn’t better than Haren.

  67. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 24th, 2010 at 12:15 am

“Tricia, were you not disappointed in how the Cliff Lee situation turned out ???? He was just about issued a uni and then bam, he was gone and off to Dallas…..”

Not a whit! Because I didn’t pay it any mind. Until and unless the Yankees announce something, to me it is a nonentity.

  68. Tyler July 24th, 2010 at 12:19 am

    austin-

oswalt seems to be prefering the Cardinals at this point. Now I live in St. Louis and I don’t know what the Cards will give up to get him but that’s what the rumor is.

I think it will be Shelby Miller to start and maybe a guy like Jon Jay, who is off to a hot start but really a 4th outfielder probably. Rumor is it’s going to be a young player currently on the 25 man roster so that really only leaves Jay as the 2nd piece unless it’s Rasmus which I can’t imagine. The Yanks probably don’t have anybody as heralded as Miller in the farm on the pitching side but could easily match a Jon Jay type.

  69. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 24th, 2010 at 12:21 am

LGY, because I believe that the Yankees still believe in Joba. Just my feelings on it is all.

mel, I think I’m saying both. I only believe a trade after it has happened, and I also don’t believe the Yankees would give up Joba.

I basically don’t tax my mind with possibilites and probabilities only because I find it to be a waste of time. I think a certain way until I’m officially advised that it’s time to think another way. And then I switch gears and am good to go. I’m just a dutiful Yankee daughter.

    ;)

  70. Bronx Jeers July 24th, 2010 at 12:21 am

Interestingly enough, ARod is 8th in All-Time Yankee HR’s with 254 and is currently tied with………Jorge Posada!

If all goes right he should end up 4th all-time behind Ruth, Mantle and Gehrig passing Berra and DiMaggio.

He would need to get to 838 total to catch Gehrig. That’s 239 more.

Actually, hitting 239 HR’s in 7.4 seasons is not out of the realm of possibility for ARod. He will be a DH several years from now and I tend to believe that he will be a very good one.

  71. Tyler July 24th, 2010 at 12:21 am

Jason Vargas has quietly put up a 2.94 ERA this season. Hard to believe with his stuff. He really didn’t impress at all against the Yanks stuffwise but he finds ways to get guys out.

    ———————–

Couldn’t the Yankees still trade Joba even if they believed in him?

Trading a player does not necessarily mean you are giving up on a player.

You have to give to get.

  73. Tyler July 24th, 2010 at 12:25 am

    Bronx-

I don’t think Arod hits 239 more homeruns but that imo. I think it’s going to be close whether he breaks the alltime record or not. I can see him slowing down alot as he ages even with the DH possibility.

  74. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 24th, 2010 at 12:26 am

I feel bad for the Mariners. Year after year they end up in the same position. I think the last time I remember them having any kind of success was when Lou was their manager. I don’t know what happened in the dugout but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was borne of frustration.

I feel bad for all of the teams that aren’t achieving – except of course for the Suxers.

I’ve always described myself as a hedonist with a heart.

mel, I absolutely believe that I am in the minority when it comes to fandom and the mental exercises related to being a fan. I’m just content to let it happen.

    :)

One point on this “trade for Haren” rumor/talk. Notice that the other teams aren’t named. Its possible that the other teams being referred to are ones on Haren’s no trade list which would make it a little less than equal.

The possibility remains that the other teams are being used to get the Yankees to give up a little more as well.

  82. Pat M. July 24th, 2010 at 12:35 am

It’s only my opinion, I just think the Front Office has come full circle with Joba…..He was offered last July for Doc Halladay, then he was offered to the Phillies for Lee and then again a few weeks ago for Lee again…….They shopped him last winter, and I do think his time in The Bronx is on borrowed time……

  83. Anthony Murillo July 24th, 2010 at 12:35 am

I think the Yankees always believed in Phil Hughes. I think they’ve lost tons of faith in Joba Chamberlain and would move him if they felt the price was right.

We can keep saying Joba Chamberlain has so much promise, so much potential, that he’s only 24 years old and could still be an ace pitcher. But, at some point, he’s needs to produce better results than he has been. The guy has been in the Major Leagues for nearly three seasons and it looks like he’s regressed. His pitches look flat, he looks out of shape, and he just doesn’t think on the mound. For a pitcher, he’s very immature.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Joba is shipped off to Arizona, to the National League, where he’ll likely do very well.

  84. Giuseppe Franco July 24th, 2010 at 12:36 am

Cashman is smart enough to know when he’s getting played by another GM. He’ll end the talks if he feels that way.

He’s obviously shown a willingness to walk away from the table when the price gets too high.

  85. Yogi Mantle July 24th, 2010 at 12:37 am

Mitch doesn’t really know what he’s talking about. Alex has hit quite a few HRs on the inner third of the plate.

The trouble with the MLB network is too many ex-players who are trying to still bolster their own egos.

  86. Pat M. July 24th, 2010 at 12:38 am

Other teams are not willing to take on too much dough, the Yanks will…..

  87. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 24th, 2010 at 12:38 am

Pat M, I don’t believe Joba was ever offered for anyone. Unless you show me official source saying otherwise (and you might have some – I don’t keep up with every drib and drab on a daily basis) then to me it is nothing more than hyperbole.

  88. Betsy July 24th, 2010 at 12:38 am

I don’t remember Joba being offered for Doc…………..Reports were that Montero was…….

GF, that’s true; I guess I’m cynical (which I am usually not) because of what happened with Seattle.

  89. Bronx Jeers July 24th, 2010 at 12:39 am

    Tyler,

I don’t necessarily see it either which is why I put him 4th on the all-time Yankee list. He needs 108 to pass Joe DiMaggio who is currently 4th and then the next step to Gehrig is a big one.

But hitting 239 more dingers in 7.4 seasons is 32.3 a season. Granted we’re not even sure he’ll make it to the end of his contract but like I said, it’s possible.

As for Bond’s record, he’s 164 away from breaking it. That’s 22.2 HR’s a season. That sounds more likely.

  90. Tyler July 24th, 2010 at 12:39 am

    Betsy-

GMs do that to every team. I doubt a GM who is trading a star player, in a deal that could get them fired if the prospects they obtain don’t work out, is out purely just to lead on the Yanks. GMs will always take offers from 1 team and go to the next team to try to push the price up. Cash has made plenty of trades the past year and doesn’t seem to have a problem working with other GMs. Sure some are harder to work with than others like Seattle but he gets what he wants.

  91. pat July 24th, 2010 at 12:39 am

Not all milestones are meant to be commemorated?

KenDavidoff Hey, how come there was no pub about Derek Jeter becoming the #Yankees’ all-time leader in GIDP? http://bit.ly/dA39A1

  92. Captain Clutch July 24th, 2010 at 12:40 am

Why is the D’backs CEO doing an interview? It reminds me of idiot Hank with the Santana trade. The Yankees “offer” being out there sounds like the Lee crap. Let everyone know what the Yankees offer is and then use it to get a better deal.

  93. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 24th, 2010 at 12:40 am

And Pat M, realize that I took a baseball haitus after Galarraga’s erstwhile no hitter, so if things were happening of which I was unaware, then they were. But again, I don’t believe anything unless the information is verified by a named source in the Yankee organization.

Just the way I rock and roll. Too much provocation put out by the hungry media and their “unnamed sources”.

  94. m July 24th, 2010 at 12:41 am

Every team is going to try and use the Yankees. But some actually want our prospects/players. Cashman has rarely gotten fleeced. And the only way I see him pulling out is if he doesn’t really want the player.

I think the only time the Yankees/fans got really angry is with Seattle and Cliff Lee. Most of the parties involved believed that the deal was agreed upon.

But Jack Z is the one who has the stain on his reputation, not Cashman. There’s nothing more that Cash could’ve done in that situation.

Cashman is a big boy playing a big boy’s game with little boys. He’ll be fine. :)

  95. Rich in NJ July 24th, 2010 at 12:41 am

Davidoff is cold, and I say that as a realist about Jeter.

  96. Yogi Mantle July 24th, 2010 at 12:42 am

Despite the hype and fervor that came with Joba in 2007, Hughes was then and still is rated higher than Joba by the Yankees. Joba-mania gave him more time, but I think those early successful times have grown dim.

Farnsworth was given a big vote of confidence from Girardi, right before he was traded. It could be similar with Joba.

It will be interesting to see how this all goes.

  97. Betsy July 24th, 2010 at 12:42 am

Davidoff hates Jeter…………..and I don’t find it funny. Jeter’s going to the HOF………

  98. Betsy July 24th, 2010 at 12:43 am

I’m not worried about Cash – he’s a very shrewd person
