Yankees pregame
Greetings, Brian Heyman here again for Chad today. Joe Girardi needs a starter for Thursday night when the Yankees finish their four-game series in Cleveland. Sergio Mitre came off the DL and gave up seven runs and seven hits over 4 1/3 in Saturday’s 7-4 loss. Mitre could get another chance filling in for Andy Pettitte, but Girardi also said the topic hasn’t been discussed with the staff yet. He hopes to have this locked down by tomorrow.
“Right now it’s Sergio, but we’ll continue to talk about it and decide what’s best,” Girardi said.
“There was rust there. You’ve got to believe next time he goes out, he’ll throw more strikes and have better command of his off-speed stuff.”
Girardi also said he wants to avoid putting Phil Hughes in the bullpen at some point during the regular season as a way to deal with his innings. Girardi said the innings limit won’t apply to the postseason.
“Postseason, the gloves are off and we try to go win a championship,” he said.
Alfredo Aceves’ back is getting better, according to Girardi. Aceves will make the seven-game road trip, to Cleveland and Tampa Bay, and will throw bullpen sessions. There’s still no timetable for his return.
Nick Swisher and Brett Gardner are OK and return to the lineup. Alex Rodriguez can concentrate solely on hitting his 600th homer at home as the DH before leaving after the game for the trip.
Sean O’Sullivan today becomes the first pitcher in four years to start for two different teams against an opponent within a six-day span. If he wins, he will be the first in 10 years to beat an opponent for two different teams within a six-day span. He beat the Yankees for the Angels on Tuesday, then got traded to the Royals on Thursday.
Here are the lineups:
Yankees

2. Nick Swisher RF
3. Mark Teixeira 1B

Does anyone know the name of the song played on the HD videoboard that has the word “mirror” in it? It is edited to a video on the HD videoboard with close-ups of Jeter, Arod and others looking right into the camera as well as highlight plays. They play it before the game starts or between innings.
Another Sean O’Sullivan win?
Hopefully the Yankees will have some success against Sean O’Sullivan now that they have seen him before.
OK Phil. You haven’t been getting it done for us in a while.
Today’s the day.
I’ve always been ready to do my part and pay homage to your victories .Now get on out there, toss a gem, and get us a series sweep.
You can do it. Get ‘er done !
No Butler, and of course no DeJesus. There’s no one in the lineup outside of Podsednik that’s adept at getting on base.
This is a chance for Hughes to really put together a quality start. Hopefully, he can get back on track.
Does everyone hate the expanding and contracting adds? Or is it just me?
Let’s hope for a good day from Phil. If we get that the rest will take care of itself.
Gardner should leadoff everyday.
I want to see Phil return to form and I also want to see the small signs from Granderson that he is continuing to hit be enduring. I’m beginning to lose patience with him. It’s almost August.
Ahh. Brian is doing the blog today. That explains the timetable we’ve been on today.

They are seeing him for the second time in 5 days, you would like to think they have figured his ephus junk by now.
Why is Gardy before Pena? If he’s not going to be atop the lineup, at least but him as close to it as possible in the reverse direction.
And here’s hoping Pena can improve on his (shudder) .448 OPS.

Swish
Tex
Arod
Cano
have become cemented in that order
Now we need for the Captain to get his act together and raise that pitiful .335 OBP that is unJeter like.
I would like to see Phil get his swing and miss stuff back, get his curve back and avoid the HR………
GB-
Cuban might not like to share credit but he ain’t stupid either.
He likes making money, and I would think he have a much better chance of continuing to do that with a guy like NR at the helm.
He can still take credit if Ryan is there or not. All he has to do is tell everyone how smart he was to hire him.
Guess what Hughes’ ERA is for last ten games.
>They are seeing him for the second time in 5 days, you would like to think they have figured his ephus junk by now.

There’s a semi-obscure baseball term for ya.
Betsy-
I have been doing everything in power to egg Phil on.
I have a really nice photo tribute just waiting for his next win.
All he has to do to get it is step up.
I hope he gets to see what have waiting for him for # 15.
Now get movin’ Phil.
MTU, let him get to #12 first, lol………..
@California. I don’t know, but if you take his last 11 games, it’s a gaudy 5.51.
We’ve all been underwhelmed by Hughes recently but I still feel he is learning on the job and will get back on track before all is said and done
Look at Ubaldo Jiminez who was dominating the world
In his last 6 starts he has allowed 6.4.7.1.4.6 runs respectively in his starts
In other words he has 1 quality start in his last 6 starts when he looked untouchable most of the season.
That is baseball, things ebb and flow with the long season.
Phil will get back on track.
Betsy-
agreed ! but time’s a waistin’

2 words for Pena
SAC BUNT
His bat is as useful as a condom to a eunuch
Time to Cowboy up Phil.
Dig in those spurs boy.
And hold on tight. Don’t let go.
I’m just looking for progress……….I can’t worry about results. That NJ.com article was interesting in that Phil admits that he’s never really been able to get that curve working for him (it is relatively new, though not so new now – he was taught it in 2004). He needs to make the curve a plus pitch for him – this is a lot more important than working on the change (one thing at a time) because without it he’s a 2 pitch pitcher. I would rather not see him give it up with 2 outs as he has been doing…………and I know YS is not really suited for him, but the HRs have to stop flying out of the park. More strikeouts please – his K rate has really diminished.

LOL, the first thing Swish said is full credit to him for shutting us down, seeing him the 1st time, we now have an idea of him for next time.
Little did they know it would be 5 days later.
Betsy-
The Royals can swing the stick.
Phil needs to pay attention to what I just told him.
Dig in those spurs and hold on tight.
Give us # 12.
I think the Yanks have problems with the changeup – not sure what to expect today. I guess more HRs – it’s another scorcher.
Somehow, the all-star break was a big stumbling block for our rotation. We’re 5-3, but there was only one really good pitching performance.
If they can get rid of whatever hex the break put on them, I’m smelling a nice little winning stretch.
they’d better win today.
It will suck if they split with KC in YS
Betsy-
IF Phil happens to get bucked off today before the buzzer sounds. We’ll just go get the next time.

Bat Jeter after Cano.
That’s all we can do, MTU, lol…………he’s not going anywhere!
The Yanks will score more runs against O’Sullivan this time around.
They tend to have much better swings against so-so talents once they’ve “gone to school” on them.
Gaudin and Moseley really helped the bullpen out the last couple of days. Logan, Robertson, Joba, and Mo should all be fresh and ready to go today if needed.

No one should take this Kansas City team lightly they took
2 of 4 from Tampa in Tampa
2 of 4 from Red Sox in Boston
Yanks better have their A Game today after Mitre’s slopfest yesterday that took the team out of the game and had to play catchup.
I’d like to see hughes lower his percentage of fasballs thrown, throw the curve & change more.At least more change ups against lefties where he struggles more against.
Betsy-
For sure.
Sooner or later a champion like him is gonna get that winning ride.
Let’s go Yankees!
C’mon Phil!
C’mon A-Rod!
C’Mon Jeter!

And hold on tight. Don’t let go.
===============
I’ll never let go, MTU, I’ll never let go.
Hughes’ home/road splits are drastic
5.22 ERA, 13 HRs, 1.36 WHIP, .266 BAA at home
2.36 ERA, 0 HRs, 1.07 WHIP, .225 BAA on the road
I’d like to see him keep the ball in the park. That’s the only thing that’s really been hurting him.
Does anyone know the name of the song played on the HD videoboard that has the word “mirror” in it? It is edited to a video on the HD videoboard with close-ups of Jeter, Arod and others looking right into the camera as well as highlight plays. They play it before the game starts or between innings.
Hughes split stats.
BAA lh .239
rh .259
whip against
lh 1.33
rh 1.14
Also gave up many more hr & bb to lh.
I think this is where a good changeup will help him, against lefties.
I think I’m not into the change anymore because I think the curve has to come first – he has got to get that curve to be a plus pitch for him. He needs that first- get that down and then work on the change.
Phil wasn’t having HR issues earlier, so either the HRs he’s given up now are a result of just overall poor pitching (he’s pitched at home a lot recently, more than on the road) or the fact that he was damn lucky earlier. I don’t think it’s the latter because he wasn’t giving up long fly balls – in fact, he really wasn’t giving up many hard hit balls.
He needs to rediscover his FB. He absolutely has to rediscover command – that’s been a huge problem. He has to stop giving up big innings with 2 outs – that’s a problem he wasn’t having earlier – and he needs to put hitters away earlier in counts.s
Jimenez is having mechanic problems. He is opening up when he pitches now.
I’m wondering if Hughes is having some similar problem, though its not anywhere near as pronounced as Jimenez’s are.
“Girardi also said he wants to avoid putting Phil Hughes in the bullpen at some point during the regular season as a way to deal with his innings. Girardi said the innings limit won’t apply to the postseason.”
That first part there makes me think that the Yankees are actually thinking otherwise. This along with the Pettitte coming back earlier might be to light a fire under AZ with Haren. With the bullpen as it currently is constructed, there are some big question marks. Adding Hughes might very well be in their plans with getting a starter.
Teams put things out there that they want others to hear about. Just like Andy saying he feels great and should be back soon. While both could be true, after all, Andy’s strain was only a grade 1, it could be that this talk is their backup plan if they don’t get the deal they want.
Where is that quote from re: Phil and the pen? I prefer they not do that as well.
I think Phil will do whatever’s asked of him. And gladly, too.
Smoltz went back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen. So, there’s precedence there, too.
Phil just needs to keep the ball in the park.
Where is everyone? You guys must know the game thread will be up a little later.
I kid, I kid.
GB–Good luck in Tampa, but we all know you are too hard-headed to stay sick for long.
I wonder about the Yankees willingness to move Banuelos. Many would say, as they have before, A ball players are far away. They may think his size only translates long-term as a reliever.
Podsnedik.
Isn’t he the one the fans voted in over Jeter?
I think it is safe to say Hughes has run out of gas, ONCE AGAIN!
He is a 2 pitch pitcher. In my opinion, he will replace Mariano.
The yankees have shown that they have zero clue when trying to develop young pitchers.
Sitting back, having a nice scotch, and ready to enjoy the game. I’m hoping that the Yanks play well so I don’t have to finish the bottle.
Well, it didn’t take long for Hughes to give up runs.
Nice SO young master.
Nice to see that we have the trolls coming out for today’s game.

Your act was already stale last year (when you went by ‘RDM’.)
It worked out well for you then, didn’t it?
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/ps/y2009/
It would be nice to see Hughes put Better Meat down and bring him back to reality.
Nicely done Young Master. Now the Yankees will pound the scrub.
Good “recovery.” Too bad for California. He’ll have to get his thrills another way.

Either I need gla-sses or the broadcast I’m watching is on a seriously long delay.
I see 0-0 /bottom of the first.
I think my reverse psychology worked. No?
You’re welcome.
Bronx Jeers,
ER/RDM/California has been watching Yankee games in an alternate reality for years.
At least Jetes worked the count a bit.
Unlike Swish.
Crap.
Can Kay explain how a bunt is a good one that goes foul?
Is Hughes’ velocity down, it seems so.
the way Hughes has been pitching the last month+, no worries about his innings limits. He won’t make it past 5 innings in any start.
Giving up a HR to Podsednik? simply pathetic.
OMG has anyone ever hit one that far in RF??
The yes announcers just suck. Why would I want to watch 299 replays of Ankiels homer. For cripes’ sake get over it you morons.
